"You wouldn’t expect to find a great meal at a meat market, but that’s just what you get at Phil’s Uptown Meat Market. You don’t even need to step inside the doors: Monday through Saturday starting at 10 a.m., Phil’s bento cart serves juicy marinated beef, pork, chicken, vegetable, and seafood skewers over rice with a variety of sauces, right in front of the store. The single skewer bento box is one of the best lunch deals in town at just $6." - Kara Stokes

The only thing better than the food was the excellent service. I ordered a burrito online and I received a call from them explaining they were out of the tortillas and asked if I was okay with tacos. They added more tacos and provided the extra sides that would have been in the burrito. Oh and the Black Beans had chunks of bacon and onions… So delicious!

I want to thank the head butcher. It was 4 minutes to 6. I drove past, and seen they had the doors open. I immediately turned in, hoping I could make it in time. After a long day, and nothing at home to feed the family (that didn’t need thawing out), I went in with determination I could find something quick and easy. Agian, it was closing. I quickly searched the case, deciding “ Steakhouse burgers”! While hurrying to Complete the transaction. I realized I have no hamburger buns at home.. We’re can I get hamburger buns at 6, heading in NW! No worries. Phil’s butcher hooked me up, out of their “own stash. “ no charge he said! 🥹Thank you for making my day, Sir! We will always shop at the friendliest Butcher shop in Portland! My Grandson is now telling his Friends in gorilla tag, that Phil’s meat markets the best burgers! McDonald’s sucks! Had to share.🤣

Google
Not only does this place serve great meat from the butcher, they also have a killer bento and sandwich/burger station. We opted for the Philwich and Chicken Club this time and both were very filling and tasty. It goes very well with the sidewinder fries.

Tiffany Brandel

Google
Ordered chicken noodle soup for lunch and had ZERO (literally) chicken or noodles!! Only reason I gave a 3 star was the fries were good and fresh.

Charles Miller

Google
best burgers in pdx or anywhere close. best bento and way awesome staff. i’m a service plumber and eat all over town so i have a lot to compare and these guys are the top

Michelle Brown

Google
My son walked from PSU the get food here. He ordered and was charged for a DOUBLE Beef Bento and received a single. It was tough and the rice was undercooked! We also ordered the Hawaiian Pasta salad it had NO dressing it was essentially macaroni bone dry! We called immediately upon discovering and the phone number keeps going to voicemail. 2pm and no one can answer the phone?? Here’s the dryed out tough “Double” bento

I came into this place in May 2023 just looking for something to slap onto the grill. I was blown away by the sheer amount of options they had in here. They had a grab n go section with salads and premade lunches that all looked fresh and high quality. There was a staircase down to a bottom level and overall it was a step into a very welcoming environment. What I assumed to be the shop owner greeted me right away and it feels like a pop owned slightly manly environment. When I go into places like this I normally ask what is popular and what they think I should get. I left with a couple skewers and a few crab cakes. I spent a couple bucks but what I can say is that the crab cakes were freaking gold. For making them at home with little knowledge they tasted better than ordering them at a restaurant. Hands down I'm going back and checking more options out. Get the crab cakes.

I haven't been to the Deli, but a few weeks ago I had food from the Phil's Bento Bar food truck and was really disappointed with my order. It came with 1 small, very dry, bland chicken skewer, and a ton of rice. With a 20% tip, I paid close to $20 which was way overpriced for what I got. They're here again today at the Cornell Oaks Business Park, but I don't think I want to try them again, quality makes all the difference!

Kim G.

Yelp
The aroma of grilled meats lures you in if you are running errands in this little strip of shops. The teriyaki beef is my go-to! So tender and flavorful, it's delicious if you get it in a bento box (from the bento truck out front) or if you buy the uncooked meat in the butcher shop area to prepare at home. They have several other offerings - pork, chicken, ribs, seafood - in a variety of marinates, but this is what I always get. It's that good. Parking is challenging if you come during the noon hour. I'm typically there mid day so never have a problem finding a spot.

Patricia C.

Yelp
I got pastrami with Havarti cheese on a french baguete and house fries. All were outstanding. Upgrading to the house fries was so worthed. The price was a little high ($20 for the sandwich not including a drink) but I'll definitely be back.

Lindsay P.

Yelp
As of May 24, 2024, Phil's is out of business. Website says closed till further notice. For lease sign on door.

Stephanie G.

Yelp
Food is decent but super spendy. This use to be a frequent haunt of mine back in the day when Phil was around. RIP Phil. Prices were reasonable back then for a BBQ bento or Sammie. Now -it's $12 for a single skewer of meat with rice, which is a little too pricey. I tried the meatloaf meal, which was tasty but $18. Seating available inside and outside but there are no heaters outside. Quality is a hit or miss too. Sometimes my skewers are small and burnt, sometimes they are spot on delicious. I wish this place was more consistent.

Cierra V.

Yelp
Grew up going here, won't be going back anymore though. $21 for 2 skewers of meat is insane (and I shop at new seasons so I'm used to paying for overpriced groceries for convenience and quality). This spot is a few blocks from my house. Wish I could still enjoy their meals at a reasonable price. Especially when the consistency is so poor! Half the time nowadays the meat is tiny and BURNT to a crisp. Sometimes it's still delicious but not worth $21 ever. In addition, I'm not sure what happened (I heard Phil passed away) but the last three times I walked in the shop, the service was terrible. The lady working each time was super rude.

Rashi T.

Yelp
Good quality meats and meals .They have a small station setup right outside the store and its impossible to walk past without the thought of buying something . I have tried their Bento box combos a few times and have always liked them . The kabobs are good as well . Prices are alright for the quality.

Charlie T.

Yelp
Still a classic spot to come get some good grub for lunch. I opted out for the tasty chicken and beef kabobs over brown rice this time. The meat was juicy and tender and full of flavors. The portion is perfect for lunch.

Laura S.

Yelp
Great sandwich choices for groups --ready right on time for pickup using their app -- two selections I brought to a party. Everyone happy with French dip and turkey with aioli and all enjoyed very much. Phils could have put it all in paper packaging instead of huge round black plastic with non recyclable plastic cover. Boxes would have been preferable packaging and if they make or offer that change -- I'll order again. We all enjoyed!

Katie K.

Yelp
Superior quality, he will make your day! I do say, I'm amazed. The creation of an infinitely patient man, I love his energy. The selection is unlike anything I've ever seen, it's truly a gem. Have you wanted your dog to have fresh food but you don't have time to make it? Get it here! Are you cooking for a romantic dinner? Go here. Need a yummy lunch for work? Here!

Laurie F.

Yelp
Mind blowing good food!! I highly recommend Phil's Meat Market (plus everyone working there is incredible nice!)

Rose L.

Yelp
Great service! Excellent butcher shop! Do yourself a favor and get your meat here. We had the best steak ever!!!

Sean M.

Yelp
Super disappointing. $21 bucks for 2 skewers and about 1/2 a pound of white rice. Flavor was ok but leaned toward the salty side. Was excited to try a food truck within a block of my place but next time I will walk further. The menu pic with one of each skewer that says $7.40...that is exactly what I got for $21. Never again.

Chalee E.

Yelp
I can't understand how this place isn't 5 stars!!! We have tried a burger, Reuben, the Italian, the grilled garlic butter focaccia bread, fries, ranch, and Phil's sauce. All are 10/10! My husband didn't care for the Phil's sauce just because it has a bit of a 1000 island flavor that he doesn't like in general but the quality was great! The sauce isn't watery at all and has flavor. The women that helped us were super kind and friendly!! I love this place. I drive 30 miles to eat here.

Jen T.

Yelp
What a welcoming spot! Super friendly and helpful staff serving outstanding meats. I had the Pullen Pork which was crazy yummy - tender, juicy, and so flavorful. My partner's Philly satisfied a craving like no other. Nice selection of snacks, beverages and salads, too. And if our sweet dog was still with us and along for this road trip, we would have grabbed her a pound of the fresh dog food for the week.

Nick B.

Yelp
Been coming for 30 years and it keeps getting better! Thank you so much to Keith at the Bento for extraordinary service!

Jason C.

Yelp
I've wanted to come for a while and was excited to try it out with friends during Sandwich Week 2022. The store itself had a really neat selection of things and decent prices. The decadent Croque Phillip was perfectly decadent. I'm glad I only ate a bite of it since I don't think I could have managed a whole one without a couch. I look forward to coming back and trying more sandwiches. Note they have no bathroom in case you're looking for one.

Meagan L.

Yelp
A local friend recommended Phil's and I'm so glad she did because it was the perfect lunch!! They have a handful of awesome meats to choose from and they all are great quality. I picked the Korean BBQ Beef which was cooked perfectly and had amazing flavor. I recommend getting a veggie skewer too to freshen things up! The main reason that I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 is because of the price. You'll pay about $14 for 2 skewers. Not a huge deal because the quality is so good, but something to be aware of. The guy making the skewers was super nice and the food was ready really fast. You can Can't wait to come back and try the Teriyaki Chicken!

Albert T.

Yelp
Came here after a long day of work Service: fun and friendly Food: scrumptious 1) corned beef Reuben - juicy & savoury sammich, I wish I got two... 2) clam chowder - different than usual clam chowder, but a nice surprise

Sam W.

Yelp
The only items I've tried here are sandwiches... Chicken Club (chicken breast on a round roll), High Flyer (triple decker club on square bread), and the Philwich salami. I intend to try the BLT as well. Sandwiches only used to be available Mon-Fri but they've recently added Saturdays. I order ahead through their phone app, and there's a line to add special instructions like "no mayo". I've requested "no pickle" four times but they gave me a pickle two of those four times, even though I always add a tip. Why this is important to me is because they make fantastic perfect sandwiches... but when a pickle is placed next to the sandwich in the "to go" box, it gets the bottom half of the bread wet. It's very counter-productive to have such a great product and then go and partially ruin it by making it get soggy with pickle juice. I'm surprised that none of the employees have figured this out yet. Even though I don't want a pickle, and the business earns more money by not giving me a pickle, if you're going to force a pickle on me; please put it in a plastic baggie or something so it doesn't soak the sandwich.

Laquesha S.

Yelp
This is what is got for the Philly it looked amazing and it was pretty bad. No cheese, bread was dry and they forgot my fries ordered and it was old tasting. Also ordered the club which was missing the bacon which shows bacon on the picture (deceiving)and it didn't have that either. All in all not the best experience

Tiffany P.

Yelp
Always excellent service and save when you pick up one of their cooler bags! We buy our turkey from them.

Erik H.

Yelp
It's with an incredibly solemn heart that I post this review with only 4 stars attached. Phil's meat market is an absolute rock solid staple to NW Portland. If you make it out of Uptown without destroying an entree you should hop into urgent care right there and get Covid tested cus your smellers aren't workin. Anyway, 4 stars bc the description of the Chicken caesar talks about how the author cannot finish it. For almost $16, I'd hope so. But we ordered lunch into the office today, got that $16 caesar and were disappointed to see that it was the size of most side salads. Tasted great though. Will definitely be back, can't beat the flav's and variety.

Michelle B.

Yelp
My son walked from PSU to get lunch and what a disaster! First he was charged and paid for a DOUBLE Beef Bento and upon arriving home we discovered he was given a single beef bento, tough beyond words. Also? The accompanying rice is under cooked and inedible. We also ordered what was described as Hawaiian Pasta salad. A bone dry container pf macaroni. Worst of all? Upon calling them the phone rings and rings and then goes to voicemail...left a message hoping they'll remedy the situation before I phone the bank regarding the charges... So disappointing

Mark S.

Yelp
Food warm. Noodles great. sauce wonderful. Order not provided correctly called store and resolved very pleasantly.

Larry R.

Yelp
Did not know they had sandwiches, decided to try their cheeseburger before buying the meat to make my own. Very tasty , thick juicy, even though it is well done. Will be back to try some other options.

Rebecca N.

Yelp
if you get a chance to order from them, please do. In short notice they were able to provide me with around a 100 bento boxes for a lunch celebration for our staff. They loved it. The meat was cooked perfectly! And they provided with all the sauces we needed along with the bento boxes and table ware. The services was amazing. I can't rave enough. And I really can't wait until we use them again!

Paul W.

Yelp
The best meat in town. One employee has a lot of difficulty leaving his personal life at home and consequently drags a lot of attitude into the business... If you can navigate your way through that you'll have a great experience.

Maggie K.

Yelp
So sad to say that the famous bento is not the same! Looks at these portions.. still tastes amazing but the amount of steak is so small it's almost not worth it anymore. C'mon Phil's! Don't skimp bring the good stuff back! Super bummed about this.

Taylor B.

Yelp
Came by last night from Seattle to grab a ham. Unexpectedly met the owner, he was a great nice genuine person. Didn't even know it was the owner! Super humble. Place smells clean, looks organized. Everyone's smiley which felt so nice to be around. Then he introduced me to all his staff, and gave me the best service I could ever ask for. Made the drive worth it and my thanksgiving the best ham EVERRR!!!! thanks so much. 10/10 will be coming back even from Seattle again. Thanks if you're reading this! Made my trip so much better. Bless this great business. I recommend it.

Steven B.

Yelp
Great food and plenty of it! My only issue is a couple of screwed up deliveries. That has been worked out.

Erin B.

Yelp
Ordered a salad through a delivery service and it was not at all what I expected. It was a $15 but came in a container you would use for a side salad. Attached is the picture and description from the website, and then what arrived at my house. It came with field greens when the menu said "crisp iceberg", it came with a little bit of shredded cheddar even though the menu and picture show cubed cheddar and Swiss, there was hardly any meat. This was not even worth $5, yet I paid over $15. I gave 2 stars bc my kids liked their chicken and the French dip my husband had was good.

Rudy R.

Yelp
For a quick grab of a skewer and rice or sandwich, this is our go to. The meat dept is also recommended - we come here frequently for their selection and quality. Love they are an old Portland establishment I came to as a child and they are still here.

Theresa C.

Yelp
Phill's has been a favorite for years. Their bentos are the best. Of course that's just my opinion, and I'm partial to Phil's. They have chicken and vegetable options too. I always opt for the beef which is perfectly marinated, and cooked to perfection. They offer both white, and brown rice. They have teriyaki sauce, and sweet chili sauce which they can add on to your order. If you like bento, give them a try.

Anthony D.

Yelp
I got the pulled pork sandwich from Phil's and it was amazing! Very flavorful and amazing ingredients. Very friendly staff as well! 10/10 experience, I hope to be back soon for another visit and amazing sandwich!

Irving G.

Yelp
Wouldn't get Uber Eats from here. $19 base price for probably the most dry philly cheesesteak I've ever had. Barely any meat, meat was dry, and next to no cheese. It was 80% dry bread. Order also came incomplete. Their pictures do look good, might be different experience in person. Will give it a go one day.

Joe A.

Yelp
I've been coming to Phil's for over 30+ years and yesterday might have been my last time ever! First off let me say that the employees in the fish department and outside were very friendly and I have no issues w them at all. The issues I have and my reasoning for giving 1 star are as follows: The ordering system for ordering sandwiches needs to be updated immediately. Ordered 4 sandwiches and 2 of them were incorrect. How do you order a turkey, bacon and avocado sandwich and you forget to put bacon on it and barely any turkey for $13.50. What a joke! Now for my biggest issue. The 2 main employees in the kitchen were some of the rudest people I've ever dealt with. I know it's somewhat hot back there but just because it was chaotic back there and ran poorly doesn't mean you act and talk rudely to your customers. Constant yelling at other employees isn't fun to be around. If something doesn't change here I doubt I will ever be coming back and I really hate to say that because I grew up coming here and not having any of these issues. Please figure your shit out soon or you will lose many more loyal customers.

Ray Q.

Yelp
Stick with the bento it's amazing. I made a mistake and added Mac and cheese for 7 bucks and it was a scam. Looked nothing like the picture and was an extreme small size for 7 bucks. Never again.

Skyler V.

Yelp
Tried ordering from here a few times. Even if you're ordering right when they open "They're too busy". When you finally get your order they make substitutions with out checking first. They claim to have something "TODAY!" But will give you something else instead saying they don't have it today. I think the best part was the hair in my ribs, grossed me out so much I was to worried to try anything else. Definitely a hard pass and won't be making that mistake again.

Marina C.

Yelp
Sandwich, Lower 48 (French Dip) was delicious, however...I asked for no horseradish and it came with it..in addition to a produce tag in the middle of my sandwich. I was hungry, so I ate the sandwich. But two strikes on this order :(

Lori G.

Yelp
First time ordering from here & it will be the last time. Ordered the chicken special & it was essentially a salt lick, the Mac & cheese was cold, the green beans were bland/tasteless. incredibly disappointin.

Lucky V.

Yelp
The food here is great, expensive but you get what you pay for. I've been a regular here for a while now, been over a dozen times major complaint is that the service sucks big time, everyone there is rude or "stand-offish" every time I've been in, not friendly in any kind of way shape or form. Real shame since they have lots of good stuff on offer especially the skewers, chicken beef and veggie.

Robert H.

Yelp
Phil's Meat Market and Deli has been in operation for 40 years. It's navigated the transformational cycles of the NW neighborhood. It has a small red meat and fish counter. They have a wine selection and condiments all packed into a compact space. To me, their deli is the star. They have an outdoor grill and daily specials, ad hoc, and on a day of week schedule. I'm especially enjoying their Friday pot roast dinner. They overnight the roast with carrots in a crock pot. I'm more grandma style stovetop, like I do my family Irish dinner. This pot roast dinner is the beef, mashed potatoes and veggies. The meat portion can easily serve two. This is in contrast to the take out meals at the spot across the street with a similar price, and half the content. The staff has always been great too! Phil's is one of Portland's great delis!

Max G.

Yelp
The salmon kebab was delicious, all of the rice was perfectly cooked, the sauces were exquisite and interesting, and the service was incredibly friendly, especially from my new friend Jackson, who is my favorite kabob chef now.

Caetano K.

Yelp
Tasted like bad airport food, Cuban sandwich wasn't toasted and the store bought Hawaiian Mac salad still had a sticker on it for less than what's charged online.

Liz P.

Yelp
There were two people waiting for food, and two people waiting to order. We waited almost 15 minutes to order. The man working the grill couldn't be bothered to take both of our orders at the same time and disappeared into the shop for another 5min I assume to get the meat for the person in front of me. This is supposed to be a quick place to get lunch... you lost my business during the work week. Especially at 1:20pm after the main rush at noon.

David G.

Yelp
Well, my second bento in one week from here. Today the chicken was severely undercooked. I couldn't eat the last piece, showed it to the employee, he didn't even offer me a refund. Hope I don't get sick. Good bye, hello recession. Date 4-1-22, time 11:40 am

Tatyana S.

Yelp
Placed an order here 2 weeks ago for duck breast for vday dinner. Showed up and they didn't have it and just had frozen. Pretty much ruined my vday dinner plans.

Cindi C.

Yelp
So I waited for about 20 minutes for Bryce outside of Phil's meat market delicatessen. Which is ridiculous as there was rice 2 bloody minutes ago..... this is the worst run establishment EVER. If you Can't go anywhere else I would highly recommend going anywhere else. They suck

Chase M.

Yelp
Oh how I want to like anything with the word 'meat market' in the name... wait that sounded odd... I will say I miss old salt market.. We came in here to grab some meaty goods, the staff was super nice and helpful and threw in a few extra beef sticks to snack on as we ate. The prices... well they're pretty crazy, I think I could go to a reputable steak house and get it on a plate for some of these prices. I had a groupon so we went and got a bunch. The food is quality... DON'T GET ME WRONG, BUT BANG FOR YOUR BUCK NOT SO... That said the sausage isn't as good as Otto's and it is higher price. One of the sausages we had gotten even had some bone in it. I am not super mad at that, but... if I broke a tooth, which I could have, I would have been not so happy... We tried 4 cooked sausage, 3 raw sausage, and some beef cuts. They were good, but again just about a 25% mark up above some of the other specialty items I have ventured toward. I would compare it to Zupans. I wanted to love you, but... I think you would be better to go to Otto's or splurge and go direct to a farm that grass feeds (and finished) beef...

Margret B.

Yelp
Best skewers in town. The beef is better than the chicken but both are good. Craving those skewers all the time.
