The Best East Bay Coffee Shops with Free Wifi

"The first Philz in the East Bay follows the SF-born chain’s mantra of brewing one cup at a time, tailored to the customer’s personal preferences. There is good reason why everyone remembers their first mint mojito iced coffee from Philz. Philz also has locations in Rockridge (6310 College Avenue in Oakland) and West Berkeley (1313 9th Street), but the Shattuck spot has a nice old-school, comfy feel." - Janelle Bitker

A Philz Coffee in Berkeley Just Became the First Shop to Unionize - Eater SF

"The Philz Coffee on Gilman Street in Berkeley voted to unionize on March 19. Philz Coffee United, the name of the nascent union, has the support of all 16 staff members, voting yes in the election. According to The Daily Californian, this election comes on the heels of eight employees at the shop allegedly getting sent home for their pro-Palestine pins in December. Philz Coffee CEO Mahesh Sadarangani told the outlet the company plans to work with the union. Still, Philz Coffee had its ups-and-downs last year, closing its beloved flagship location on 24th Street in October 2023. At the same time, workers in that original location said they were working under poor conditions in a building that was discovered to be owned by the company through investment company Humble Lion. The Daily Californian reports the staff at the shop were emailed on March 13 that the location’s future remains uncertain as the lease expires in May." - Paolo Bicchieri

Google
Seriously. Not every day I visit a place where the service is great, the atmosphere is peaceful and the drinks/food is awesome. Was my first time here by accident, I'm usually a Starbucks person but now Starbucks feels like gas station coffee compared to this place. I had the Rose Iced Coffee. 10/10 definitely recommend trying it!! I read the google reviews and had to see what the hype was all about.

Google
I love mornings! ☀️It’s a good Monday to be grateful for life, peace and good coffee. Philz coffee is a longtime Bay Area favorite so I’m happy to be sitting here enjoying a hot cup of Tesoro which is a beautiful blend of caramel and citrus. I loved going to the one at the Marina when we lived in the city. I like that they’ve upped their coffee game. It’s more sophisticated with all types of pour overs hot and cold. This location has a nice vibe as well. I really liked my barista, too. Nice people at the register as well. All you coffee places, listen up: How you treat customers matters. 😉

Google
Serious coffee drinkers listen up Phillz is the Best cup of Java I've experienced in some time. Move over Pete's. I loved this coffee. The atmosphere is inviting and laid back. I could get comfortable here with lots of tables outside. This spot could be addictive... You've been warned.

Google
Best coffee. It takes 20 minutes to get coffee though sometimes. And the barista is moving fast. It just is a long process. So be ready to wait Dairy free milk at no charge

Google
Usually really like this coffee and this location but recently tried to buy coffee and it was cash only which has never happened before luckily I had $10 dollars l, ordered a large philtered soul and they tried to charge me 12.50. just walked out. Usually the coffee is $6.50 even if you order it online it's $6.50 so kind of weird they were trying to charge me double that.

Google
Philz is a cafe with nice ambiance, but don't order their chai latte. It is the worst I've had. It tasted like a cup of wattered down luke warm milk with a touch of flavor. It did not taste like Chai. Disclosure, I can not report on their coffee

user hahrey

Google
I didnot want to use paper cup but they were asking me to bring over mine ,,if I want to use mug . well philz is a great coffeeshop over all. . I hope they have this service.

V

Google
They only do pour-overs, and it’s pretty good. Sought out a store to try it fresh after having tried the beans from the grocery. Philharmonic was surprisingly good with a sprig of mint resting on top. The staff were great and very concerned about ensuring I liked my drink. I’ll be back. ✨

Yelp
I can't recommend this Philz enough. The baristas are all very friendly and always want to make sure your drinks are served the way you want. I've been to different locations around the Bay Area, and no one makes it like they do here. And nothing but good vibes. All the baristas are really good, so don't worry about who's making it. Philtered Soul Iced Extra Sweet and Extra Creamy Philtered Soul Cold Brew Extra Sweet and Extra Creamy

Yelp
Nice place to work. Good vibes. The vanilla date delight, with the cinnamon-date syrup combination, is good, although I don't think the vanilla is forward enough to be identifiable off the bat. But I really like dates. There is no wifi here, as per queries to the staff, which is unfortunate.

Yelp
Philz Coffee *never* misses! Philz is one of the best cafès in the Bay Area, and this location is my personal favorite. The baristas/cashiers always greet you with a smile, and patiently assist you with your order. The cafè also has a very chill vibe, and you feel welcome the moment you walk in. The coffees are good, strong, and affordable. My personal favorites are the honey haze and rose...who would've guessed you could have pink coffee? :) Now I must admit the service can be a wee bit slow, but that is only because the place is so dang popular! Order ahead online or prepare for a (worthwhile!) wait. Looking forward to my next stop at Philz!

Yelp
This location is so good! Our barista (Pemma) made our drinks so tasty and perfect. We ordered a mocha tesora, honey haze & philtered soul. I'm a philz fanatic and I would def go back to this location. If you see this, thanks girl for the delicious drinks!
google avatar

Brianne M.

Yelp
Great location with ample seating and very cool staff. Not the same template of food and coffee as other Bay Area coffee places - the breakfast burritos are great! They have a little elevator for people who need it.
google avatar

Yelp
Working across from this location I don't drink here as much. I keep ordering at Starbucks and rarely at Peet's. Philz in convience for me to get a drink. Ordering the drink through the app and go to Philz to get my drink and it is ready. A five star rating for Philz due to getting my drink on time when you order through the app. I get greeted when I come inside and greeted when I leave with my drink. Ordering in person is getting difficult due to the long line and a long wait for my drink to be ready. With the app is stress free without being inpatient. Parking can be a pain to find. Luckily the next block is another parking lot. No complaints about Philz Coffee in Gilman. Keep up the good work Philz!

Yelp
This Philz is always on point (I prefer this location over College Ave) Drink - 5/5 - Iced Honey Haze (my favorite) Vibe - 4/5 - Pro: Very vibrant atmosphere - busy at 11:30 am on a Friday - Con: It is small and has limited tables - They do have tables outside (if you're lucky, you'll sit by all the puppies visiting!) Customer Service - 4/5 - Grateful to the barista who asked me to try my drink first and offered to fix anything - She made it 100% good - thank you!!
google avatar

Yelp
I feel like I give a lot of 5 star reviews but I think Yelp steers me to the best places and so it snow piles. I still wish Yelp allowed for half rating increments - are you guys listening? Philz is as good as it gets for drip, gravity brewed coffee. Yes, it does require a bit of a wait, so don't be in a rush to get in and out. They have a menu of different brews at different strengths. I order a dark roast, which was fresh, smooth, balanced, rich, everything good!
google avatar

Wendy W.

Yelp
I ordered coffee, a green chili burrito and banana bread. The coffee is excellent. The burrito was good. The banana bread did not come, though it was on the receipt they sent and I paid for it. This is the second time that I ordered banana bread and it didn't come and I paid for it. There will not be a third time. It's clear that if I want banana bread I will have to go to Philz and get it. I live in the Berkeley Hills which is why I often order delivery and I probably won't make the trip. Too bad.

Yelp
From my visits at this Philz location, all of their Baristas have been wonderful, very friendly and courteous and they seem to want to be there! This location always has consistent top quality in every cup of coffee that ive ordered! Can't say that for other locations. Looking forward to my next visit here!
google avatar

Veronica L.

Yelp
Teighan was awesome. Made me the best iced mint mojito! Thank you! Best service. Clean Philz!
google avatar

Andrew S.

Yelp
Mmmmmm love the drinks at Philz, well most of them. I normally order "Philz Way" which is medium cream, medium sugar. You can also order "Jacob's Way" which is medium cream + medium honey. My go-to drinks are the ecstatic iced coffee, philtered soul, and iced mint mojito. I've tried a few from their "secret menu" like the Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Oatmeal Cookie, and Mocha Tesora but I personally wasn't a fan of those drinks.

Yelp
I am so elated there is a Philz on this side of town in Berkeley. I get a little taste of heaven close to home, my favorite is the Mocha Teresa and seasonal is the Winter Bliss and Gratitude. Each cup ordered is made with one batch at a time, slow dripped just for your order. The wait time can fluctuate depending on the time you visit. If you have the time, wait and enjoy the cleanliness and operation of what is known as Philz. If you prefer arriving with your order ready to pickup and go, use their mobile app to order ahead. The app saves your favorite selections and preferences, it's as easy as tapping "Re-Order" and "Pay." The location is accessible from the Gilman exit or San Pablo and Gilman turn. There is street and lot parking available and the lot is pretty spacious. It is across from Whole Foods on the opposite side of the street. It can be fairly easy to miss as it is tucked off the street, the Philz sign is big and brilliantly lit so look for that just in case. The service is constant with friendliness, greetings and smiles when I arrive, the store is always well maintained and clean and the quality of my beverage, MOST IMPORTANT!, is always perfection!

Yelp
Philz is good...but I'm not addicted...except that rose flavor is soooo good on that Iced Coffee Rose. It's a dessert, really. Which I really don't need at breakfast. I should order it for my afternoon snack. Anywhoo, what Philz really deserves is accolades for their employees because every one of them is top notch friendly. Every time I'm a complete numbskull about what I want to order, and I forget they don't actually have espresso, they never make me feel dumb...they just explain it to me kindly. They're not in a convenient enough location for me, so I only come once every couple of years, so that's why I forget. But yeah...go get you some Philz. You'll enjoy it.
google avatar

Kelly L.

Yelp
I like to come here whenever I'm in the area shopping. I usually place my order online 15 minutes ahead of time so that it's ready when I arrive. I love getting the mint mojito, my favorite drink at Philz. Workers are always very friendly, good location.
google avatar

Christopher A.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite Philz since the closing of the original 24th street location. (Boohoo and thank you to the old classic store. Hello and thank you to the new team and new location in the Bay Area.) Great place to write, read and ponder. Staff here provide a mix of music to their tastes to provoke toe-tapping and festive ambiance.
google avatar

Paige N.

Yelp
I usually come here after placing an online order when I'm on my way to work but I was able to sit down and enjoy my coffee in the location during my last visit. I ordered hot mocha tessora which is one of my go-to's and it came out just a bit warm. Service was ok that visit. Guy at the register wasn't too thrilled to take my order and tossed my pasty at me on the counter, though he apologized. Will probably just keep my online orders for this one
google avatar

Randy B.

Yelp
All the hype? What the hell!?! Another coffee chain, big deal. Well... It really is good. Lots of bean types, and lots of specialty coffees. $20/lb beans for sale. $6 coffees. Really nice and helpful staff. I'm intrigued. More please.
google avatar

Efrain Q.

Yelp
I really like the environment of this place, and the service cause I told the cashier was my first time there and she made a great recommendation and it was really good, they just didn't know how to write my name but it's okey
google avatar

Yelp
Phil's, always comes with the good coffee. I always mean to try something new but it never fails that I walk out with a refreshing extra creamy light sweet mint mojito iced coffee. Always love how accommodating the baristas are, they have you taste test the drink and make any necessary adjustments so you walk away happy. Had a yum almond croissant to go this time as well. This location does have a parking lot but the spots are a little tight. You can always park on the street too!
google avatar

John F.

Yelp
So this is my first time at this location and I've only been to the San Francisco store and didn't try any iced coffee until today. So I ordered the rose iced coffee and it was so delicious that I would definitely order it again. The staff was so helpful due to the fact that they had so many iced coffee that I wanted to try. So I can't wait to return since this store is so close to home. The store has plenty of indoor ad well as outdoor seating and the ambiance was chill.

Yelp
"I'm so into you I can barely breathe..." - Ariana Grande Hello my name is Pete Davidson! Yea that guy! You might know me as the young dood that looks hella old! The dood that Ariana Grande fell in love with and all the haters go like what the f*** lol. Oh, well such is life and all that matters is I hit it! :D I've been to Philz across Cali 'n this locale in Berkeley is pretty rad. A private parking up front fits my midnight black limousine, tinted windows for y'know! Typical Philz upon entering: You place your order, you pay (thanX, yo sexy sugar mama!), you wait for the Baristas to craft drinks. You find a spot to sit! Peasy! We settle into our chairs and take selfies! Yup, Ariana needs that affirmation on how cute she is, *sigh* high ponytail and all! I admit she hella cute, but the need to remind her every five minutes a tad much:3 All good as our talk is on our drank, right? So yea, Mint Mojita for me and Ariana goes with Sweet Harmony w Oat! Drinks are smooth and paired perfectly with the pastries we snuck in. I mean we need to keep our baddy reps up, right? We chat, we nibble, we slurp, we take even more selfies lol. Oh! Life of the "It Crowd!" I recommend this Philz for those into flavored brews. The ambiance is college energy and people have a good vibe. Great spot for remote work or study. Not the most tables, but it's roomy and airy! The only sucky thing is when Ariana kicked me to the curb and had the balls to write a song about me... yuh savage! "Oh, baby, look what you started..." Peace out, Pete! imu *cries*

Yelp
If you're not on that Philz, then we might not be able to friends!! There are three specific locations I frequent in different cities but this one is my "on the way to work" or "on my way home" from work go it. It's easy mobile ordering and pick up and go. Attached Parking is limited but there is street parking that's not difficult to find. I've never had a drink I didn't like, but my recs are- iced Philtered Soul with light cream and sugar, or a iced Honey Haze (when avail) and Ecstatic. My hubby loves their cold brews- Philtered soul. It's very busy here but there's outdoor seating as a plus. Everyone is super friendly here. Can't wait until my next stop again!

Yelp
Went to the Berkeley location. Tucked away but order ahead and you're good. Parking lot gets full so look out for that

Yelp
I came here on a late Saturday afternoon for a nice snack and iced mint mojito drink. On arrival, I really enjoyed what they did with the place. The place had a large garage-like entrance and large windows that allowed for a lot of natural sunlight and a natural breeze to flow through. The interior had nice tables suitable for chit-chat or studies. The patio had nice tables as well where I eventually settled down to enjoy my coffee while doing some reading. The overall location is very nice. Given that I had not had lunch yet and just finished a slight workout, I was hungry for a snack here. Looking at the cookies, I was extremely turned off as I saw a large swarm of fruit flies flying around and walking over all of them. This was quite the sight that made me want to skip eating anything altogether but I was hungry enough to pretend I didn't see anything and so I opted for a onion and bacon croissant located far at the other end of the display. I asked the worker to get it extra toasted maybe just for ease of mind. It ended up being pretty good which was nice. I received my croissant soon after I ordered it since it just needed to be toasted. However, the mint mojito took upwards of 30 minutes to receive. It was not a busy time with just 3-4 orders ahead of me. However, this place was clearly understaffed with only one person making the drinks. I appreciate the work put into my drink as it was extremely refreshing and great but having to wait so long was a bit of an annoyance knowing that far busier Philz locations are able to fulfill orders much quicker.

Yvonne W.

Yelp
Good coffee with a virtue signaling religious ceremony around a cup of coffee. Geeze, brew and stop fussing and cleaning. U can fuss and clean as the coffee is streaming into your One Cup. Bartended for 20 yrs. Never saw such a wait unless u r making an entire pot, oprning up a new bag and washing out the pot and pouring in fresh water to the brewing machine. Get my drift? Get the lard outta your behind
google avatar

Ben R.

Yelp
Only for fans of flavored coffee I guess they do well what they do but don't go here for a regular cup of coffee. "We don't make expressso drinks." The first thing the counter attendant tells me. So it's a different drink. Everything else was pretty great. A lot of typical coffeeshop pastries, somewhat loud music to cover the din, great internet. It's not to my liking but there are a LOT of people in here as I type this and they must like the stuff. I came for a latte and had to choose from a list including "Dark and Bold" and "Light and Bright" and it's flavored coffee. You will end up with flavored coffee. It's not for everyone.
google avatar

Veronica C.

Yelp
Going to school in the area, I often find myself studying in Berkeley. This location has a chill atmosphere with lots of young people in CAL Crewnecks trickling in and out. There's plenty of metered street parking, ample power supply, and good music playing (mix of 2000s hits and todays music). Lots of study space and the wifi is SUPER QUICK. Of course, Philz in general is great. My fave is the mojito- refreshing and sweet topped with a mint leaf. But I feel like this location has more to offer than some. Recommend.

Cassandra D.

Yelp
The best coffee in the world! Made using a drip filter, the best way to make coffee. They tailor each cup individually and make them one at a time. Try the Silken Splendor blend, it is unbelievable! My only criticism is that this kind of coffee does not continue to taste good in your cup after about half an hour. I'm one of those people who will hang onto their coffee all day, and somehow Silken Splendor blend gets metallic-tasting and bothers my stomach after it's cold. But not so with their rosé iced blend, or the mint Mojito iced coffee. Delicious! The servers also try to be extra nice, real & human to everyone. They talk to you and ask you how you're doing and stuff like that.
google avatar

Allister D.

Yelp
I remember coming to this Philz location years ago. I'm not sure where my review went? Better now than never lol. This location is great especially being in the Berkeley neighborhood. I always loved it's 'Warehouse' feel with its outside appearance. Just like all the other Philz locations, it has a cult following with lots of locals sipping and eating inside. The baristas are friendly and super quick with the drinks. The drinks are consistent and tastes delicious. They have another person at the pastry station which is great; most Philz places, the cashier has to put everything at a pause to do it. This is a great coffee shop to stop-in while in B-town. It's also away from the busy strip so parking is a bit more available here.
google avatar

Herald H.

Yelp
Plenty of seat, lines weren't long and service was fast. Also parking is easy in this location
google avatar

daniel w.

Yelp
This location isn't doing so well; last 3 times things were messed up, maybe not enough training? I mean it's a good coffee chain....?
google avatar

Nadine Y.

Yelp
Depending on the time and day it could get pretty busy here that I do recommend ordering online via the app. I do like that they have an app where you can order your drink because all you have to do is pick your drink, what time are you picking up, show up and just wait for the drink. Just like most coffee shops, their pricing is pretty standard compared to other places. The service here is also excellent where if you feel that something needs to be changed with your drink, just let them know and they will fix it for you. They do have their own parking lot that can hold around 10-15 cars and if the lot is full, there is street parking available. You really can't go wrong with the drinks here to be honest. They have a variety of options for those who are coffee drinkers and those who are not. They have iced coffees, dark/medium/light blends of coffee, tea, food such as bagels, and they have their own beans that you can buy and make coffee at home. A few of my favorite coffees that I recommend are : - Philtered soul : Hazelnut flavor, chocolate. You can't go wrong if it's hot or iced - Silken Splendor : Dark cocoa, citrus, and butterscotch. - Mint Mojito : An iced drink that has a fresh mint, sweet and creamy - Iced Coffee Rose : Sweet, creamy with a hint of rose taste - Gingersnap : An iced gingersnap coffee that has the sweet, creamy and spices taste Highly recommend trying out philz if you are near one!
google avatar

Wendy C.

Yelp
If you are ever on the West Coast, you must try Philz Coffee. Every cup they make is started from scratch. You won't get coffee that's been sitting in a carafe for hours. They grind the beans then pour hot water over them directly into your cup for the freshest taste. They have great beans to choose from too. If you fall in love with your cup.. they sell bags to take home with you. My latest visit was for iced coffee called Gingersnap. It tasted just like the cookie.. although not as sweet. It was quite good. I'll be back on my next visit. :)
google avatar

Manuel Antonio M.

Yelp
Philz never disappoints...I love it! The winter bliss and the one with honey....soooo good.
google avatar

Cyn T.

Yelp
As usual, this location is filled with friendly, energetic and helpful people. I ordered a Tesora and decaf blend with Almond milk extra hot. I also ordered two turkey sausage sandwiches and one bacon burrito for my guys. I ate half of the turkey sandwich and spit it out. It had a chemical aftertaste that I did not like at all. The good thing is that I did like my coffee. That was the most important thing! Lol
google avatar

Niko V.

Yelp
At first I really like this place they really have some decent coffee but they've just gone totally downhill. I can't believe the horrible service and receiving these last few weeks so I'm gonna have to switch it up can't go to Starbucks anymore. Can't go to this one anymore so I have to find something different.
google avatar

Gail U.

Yelp
4-25-21 Extraordinary tasting coffee. The iced mocha Tesoro tastes like chocolate heaven in a cup. Doc had preordered the drinks but there was a long wait to get the 3 beverages: mine plus 2 mint mojitos. Definitely wins hands down on s. To say hits the spot is mild because the taste will elevate your mood and tastebuds. Thanks for treating dad and I
google avatar

Julie H.

Yelp
UPDATE 12/25/23: Mediocre coffee. Worse worker rights. Even though the quality at Philz had gone down, I had started supporting the business again in November, believing it was owned by its founder. i just learned that not only is it not owned by him anymore, but employees are not allowed to wear pins supporting a free Palestine and have been sent home for doing so. They lost my business a second time.
google avatar

Christine F.

Yelp
Ordered through their app and it was very convenient! When I got to the place, it was quite long so all I had to do was wait for my drink to be made. Taste: I've been to Philz Coffee before, but not at this location so I basically have a go to drink, which is a Mint Mojito. However, I replaced the sugar with Stevia (a tad bit bitter than sweet if you're into it which I wasn't so that's why it's 4 stars. If you're into sweet iced coffee drinks, I recommend this but with sugar! Pricing: pretty standard for a franchise coffee shop in my opinion. Parking: this is the first time I've ever seen some part of Berkeley having some sort of free parking. There's some curbs that don't have meter parking and also a tiny parking lot next to the building! Service: excellent! The barista who made my drink was super friendly! Definitely gonna be stopping by here more after I graduate from college! Seems like a great spot to study even though it's a tad bit small.
google avatar

Erin A.

Yelp
Found this amazing spot while on a work trip and can't stop craving this delicious coffee! I got a honey haze cold brew and a turkey sausage sandwich and both were fantastic. Great vibe to do some work and enjoy the cooler weather!
google avatar

Alex M.

Yelp
Had the mint mint mojito, it's was perfectly sweet and had a natural flavor, the service is a 10/10 and the baristas are very friendly and always ask to make sure you like your drink. The ambiance is nice and the store is always clean, I love their grater alarms roast and it has a light yet pronounced pineapple flavor, definitely my favorite place in Berkeley and the Bay Area!
google avatar

Jem T.

Yelp
I came here yesterday and did an online order per usual. When I arrived my order containing 3 items were ready. I ordered a small iced silken splendor, paper filter philtered soul beans, and an everything bagel with cream cheese. My coffee wasn't iced, but Daria quickly corrected the order with a fresh cup made correctly and even asked if I wanted to keep the hot coffee. I kindly declined since I'm pregnant and have to watch my caffeine intake. Sadly this morning I'm preparing my pour over coffee and I opened my bag of beans that were supposed to be for a paper filter and they're whole beans instead of grounded. Not only did this trip fail me twice, I now have whole coffee beans, nothing to do with them, and a craving I have to go out of my way to satisfy again.
google avatar

Jackie T.

Yelp
Iced mojito coffee is amazing. So refreshing. Everyone I've had try it loves it. You won't be disappointed.

Patricia L.

Yelp
Dani (sp?) made the perfect Ecstatic today. The past 2 times I've been in, it hasn't been as good as before, but today was perfection!
google avatar

Vanessa D.

Yelp
Incredible coffee, amazing staff, cozy atmosphere! Honey haze iced with oat milk is delicious. Pros: The baristas have their own stations with their name on it! How sweet is that, you know where to pick up your drink because they place it in front of their station on the bar with your name and drink labeled on the cup and you can thank them personally for making your drink! This location has one all gender restroom- we love to see it. They sell pastries and have a few food options at the till. They also have sustainable coffee cups- we love that! Great place to study/work or just hangout and enjoy the space. Cons: Small parking lot, don't recommend if you're in a rush- (it's berkeley) Inside can be on the louder side if you're gonna work or study but nothing a good pair of headphones can't fix. I love the history of Philz I think they're a great spot to try with I believe over 69 locations in California, you won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Darlene Y.

Yelp
Sometimes I think Philz is too fancy for me, but my friend recommended I try the PHILTERED SOUL. I got it with lighter sweetness and it was perfect since I really need to wake up from my early flight into SF. ENJOY! PS: Parking can be poop if a bunch of people are trying to get coffee.
google avatar

Cari A.

Yelp
Pros: -free small parking lot in front -mobile order available (pick up is by the window according to first names) -walk up order available- walk up order items are picked up at this window, not near the mobile orders -they will ground your coffee bean purchase Cons: -n/a

Yelp
2022: I've enjoyed Philz Coffee generally and this location specifically for a very long time, as evidenced from by my last review way back in 2014. After a long break during the pandemic, I've started coming back to this location, and I feel compelled to provide feedback on two incidents that happened last week. This location has an inside / outside hybrid design, and it seems that this has led to people feeling comfortable bringing their dogs (both inside and outside). On Friday, two different customers brought large dogs (like 50+ pounds) into the store. On Monday it was the same thing - multiple large dogs. While I tend to be in the "service dogs only" camp, I figured it's whatever, that's just the vibe now, EXCEPT on both Monday and Friday, two different dogs aggressively barked at and LUNGED AT other customers. On Monday, the dog (a large German Shepard) actually barked and lunged at two different people, one inside and one outside. Even more amazingly, all three of the "victims" of the lunges were Black customers. In fact, when the second lunge happened on Monday, the "victim" turned to the German Shepard's owner (an older white woman) and said "Wow, your dog really doesn't like Blacks," which she awkwardly attempted to laugh off. I have always thought of Philz as being one of the most inclusive businesses in the Bay Area, probably in the country, so I have been really troubled by what I observed. All these years later, as someone who has repeatedly brought their toddler to this location (and saw other toddlers there on Friday), I no longer feel comfortable coming here, particularly with my children. It only takes one accident ... Updated from 2014 (4 out of 5 stars): Coffee is excellent per usual, and there is rarely a line at this Philz (NOT ANYMORE), which is a huge plus. However, and this is again somewhat universal to all their spots, despite having a big seating area, there is almost never anywhere to sit (GREATLY IMPROVED). Couches are nice, but I'd rather there were more tables. There is ample outdoor seating, but if you're there after 12pm. you'll be baked in direct sunlight. Awnings or umbrellas would be a huge help (NOT ADDRESSED, THOUGH THE NEIGHBORING BUSINESS DID PUT UP UMBRELLAS).
