"A West Coast coffee brand opening its first local shop with baristas guiding customers through a customizable menu, grinding beans-to-order and offering Mediterranean-inspired light bites and bakery items from local pastry partners." - Naomi Waxman
"A Bay Area coffee chain, Philz Coffee has a wholesale deal with Fabiana’s Bakery to offer the bakery’s pastries in its Chicago locations: one Philz is already open in Wicker Park, another is opening in Hyde Park this weekend, and upcoming cafes are planned in Lincoln Park and suburban Evanston; Fabiana’s is supplying cookies, cinnamon rolls, cheddar rolls, and pecan bars for those locations." - Ashok Selvam
"I visited San Francisco cult favorite Philz Coffee's first Chicago location in Wicker Park, which officially opens Saturday at 1640 W. Division Street after a few weekend sneak peeks. Customers can choose from 12 secret coffee blends from Brazil, Colombia, Ethiopia, Yemen, and beyond, and baristas will grind the beans on the spot to customize brews; the shop is known for strong coffee and strong WiFi. Bakery items come from Aya Pastry (from the company behind steakhouse Maple & Ash) and Hyde Park’s Fabiana’s Bakery, and the menu includes toasts, burritos, bowls, and sandwiches with a Mediterranean flare—notably the labneh za'atar toast with fresh cucumber and the Mediterranean avocado toast topped with sliced hardboiled egg. The bright, airy space features tall windows and ceilings, yellow and blue hues, benches, tables, and couches that offer ample room to work or play, plus patio seating, and a mural depicting local landmarks like the Chicago Theater, the Bean, and the Art Institute lions. The furniture was designed by Revivalist Woodworking, mostly from solid white oak, and the bean display is made of white ash." - Naomi Waxman
"A West Coast cult-favorite coffee shop making its Chicago debut with a strong focus on personalized service—baristas guide customers through the menu, grind beans to order, and add fresh custom condiments like mint—paired with light Mediterranean bites and pastries from local bakeries." - Ashok Selvam
"Opening Saturday, June 22 at 1640 W. Division Street (with sporadic sneak-peeks beforehand), this new Wicker Park outpost is a purpose-built shop just west of the CTA Division Blue Line stop that anchors the brand’s Midwest expansion. It emphasizes hand-crafted, customizable coffee made from 12 secret blends sourced from countries including Brazil, Colombia, Ethiopia and Yemen; beans are ground to order, drinks typically take three to four minutes, and staff mix any add-ons behind the counter rather than offering a syrup or sugar condiment stand. The ordering experience is intentionally guided — customers are greeted by a barista who suggests blends and specialty drinks, and an app speeds service for commuters while storing favorites and barista photos. The menu also includes light Mediterranean-flavored items such as labneh-and-za'atar toasts, bowls and sandwiches, baked goods supplied by local partners, strong Wi-Fi, and an atmosphere that encourages lingering (about 90 minutes on average)." - Ashok Selvam
