"San Francisco-based coffee shop Philz Coffee will sling complimentary drinks and treats at its week-old storefront at Ballston Exchange in Arlington, Virginia. Its new-ish Bethesda, Maryland, location is also participating. Available while supplies last, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m." - Tierney Plumb

First of all, the coffee is excellent. ☕ The carrot muffin is also very tasty. 🥕 And most importantly, it's incredibly pet-friendly, which I absolutely love. 🐾 I highly recommend it! 🌟

Google
The coffee can be AMAZING or just okay You never know how your honey haze or other drinks are going to turn out. Might have to start going to collectivo more now due to this inconsistency Philz coffee has regarding the drinks.

The Plant Powered Sandwich is pretty good. Its very hot so allow it to air out. The contents inside (plant sausage and JUST EGG) will slip out while eating so it can be a little tricky. The sandwich itself is also pricey at $9.25, but it was worth a try. Coffee is a little bitter so best served with cream and sugar. -1 star for value and eh plain black coffee, but nice service and seating.

Google
Great casual coffee place. The beans are freshly ground for each cup ensuring smooth deep flavor. They also offer some pastries and teas. The staff is also really friendly and awesome to hit up for custom coffee blend suggestions.

Google
A small and cozy cafe for local residents and students. Great atmosphere to meet up with friends to enjoy a nice cup of latte and their companies.

Google
$7 for a cup of medium coffee. Like it’s just coffee with a dash of flavor and enough sweetener to give the city diabetes. Berry Pike across the street charges $3.50 and at least gives you a hot beverage sleeve.

JT Michael

Google
A great option for coffee. The staff are always friendly and helpful, which adds to the warm atmosphere. I wasn't sure about the limited drink menu at first, but after going a few times have come to really like it. It's a smaller menu than a lot of coffee shops, but all the drinks are solid. You can also customize the amount of sugar and cream in your drink, which is nice. The food isn't anything special and I wouldn't seek it out, but I don't think most people are going to Philz for the food anyways. Last, I'm not a big fan of using apps, but the Philz app is very user friendly.

Google
First time coming to Philz and loved it! The cashier made great suggestions and the barista made my friends’ drink so good she is still talking about it lol. I got chamomile tea which was delightful and she got something that tasted like toasted marshmallow but it was vegan. Beautiful and bright space with great energy 💖

Yelp
Looking for fun, creative coffee creations? Come by Philz in Evanston. It's worth the wait as they craft your beverage. Enjoyed the Philtered Soul iced coffee. Lots of cozy couches and spacious bright seating area.

Tanya A.

Yelp
I had Philz for the first time when I was in SF... and it was outstanding! So glad they opened one locally! Whenever I am in the area I always pop in. The only downfall is they don't have enough people working. So the wait time is long! And when in a hurry... it's not the place to stop for a cup of coffee!! The vibe is very Evanston! Laid back! Clean!

David P.

Yelp
Not a good experience. They don't actually have what we ordered, but didn't explain that at the register. When I went to pick up the drinks the explanation was so muddled that I had to ask again bc I thought there might have been a mistake. I never really got it. Turns out that if you order a "latte/coffee latte" they really don't do that. Ok, but please explain during the ordering process. Finally, It was an hour before they closed so we got to hear the person calling out "one hour before closing." Then "45 minutes before closing," etc. Not my idea of a cozy coffee shop by any stretch. To sum it up, not great coffee (I mean flavor) and not a satisfying outing.

Dawn A.

Yelp
This Philz location is spacious with plenty of outlets, friendly staff, and a variety of seating options - indoor sofas, tables, high tops and outdoor. I usually get an iced mint mojito and spend an hour or so doing work. If I'm feeling snacky I usually get a cinnamon roll which is delicious - ask for it to be warmed up!

Munsanje M.

Yelp
Stopped by for a midday pick-up and thoroughly enjoyed the iced coffee rosé! All of the drinks whether iced or hot comes in a hot sleeve cup which is different from most shops but I like it cus the logo is too cute. Perfect place to study and hang out with quite a bit of indoor space.

Nazia C.

Yelp
I've been to Philz before, although I usually order a hot coffee. I was kinda clueless as to what I wanted to try, and the cashier informed me that all the drinks came in hot or cold options. I tried the iced Philtered Soul, and I was surprised to see the iced drinks served in the same cup as the hot drinks. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it's more enjoyable to see your iced drink through the clear cup, lol. Regardless, it was still yummy. I like that it's fully customizable with the cream and sweetness level.

Mike N Anne ..

Yelp
It was ok. We got a couple coffees. They were very dark and too bitter for my partner's liking.

Christian H.

Yelp
I wish I could give this place a 6/5 , Philz has become a part of my personality haha. I used to come here throughout the school 3-4 times per week using my part-time paychecks to cover my Philz coffee.. Service is always great, and I get super excited when I see my favorite baristas are working (I'm sorry if I got your guys' names wrong but Edward and Ryan are my favorites)! If you don't like how your drink was made or you'd like it altered they're always so happy to oblige. The interior is cute and much more homey than other coffee chains that I've visited, and while I infrequently stay in to do work (I just get distracted easily), it's definitely a great environment to sit down and get some work done. Another tip, if you just want to pick up, download and use their app to time your pickup! And make sure to tip the baristas :) Here are my favorite coffee recommendations (I usually get it House Way): Philtered Soul, Soul Train (off-menu), Oatmeal Cookie (also off-menu, recommend oat milk with this), Mocha Tesora, New Manhattan, and while it's only a seasonal drink, I really love the Winter Bliss and I hope it comes back soon... Go and check Philz out guys!

Eddie U.

Yelp
This is the most amazing pour of coffee I've had in a while. Your unique menu and style makes your shop unique and memorable for the costumer service and product. My partner asked for a latte and was surprised to hear that you do individual pours only but that they could do something to accommodate the request. We said no need and ordered two medium roasted pours. As soon as I tasted mine I knew I to taste your entire menu as my goal.

Emerald W.

Yelp
Love the coffee and staff, but whatever you do - DON'T GET THE BURRITOS! They are all potato - no egg or meat! Can't see or taste anything except for the potato and tortilla, which aren't particularly good. Stick with the incredible coffee.

Danelle F.

Yelp
The iced honey coffee is my favorite. The vegan breakfast sandwich is just ok, the bread gets tough to bite into after it's been heated up (microwave?) cute place to sit and drink your coffee. Nice staff. No longer Palestinian owned, which is a huge bummer.

Stephen C.

Yelp
Cool and quaint it's a good stop in Evanston for a quick cup or a light bite. Very clean with a super friendly staff it's very spacious and open with plenty of room to study, work or just chill in. Prices are on point with most places but you get more here. Most drinks are made to order. When my iced coffee drink was ready it was delicious. The barista made it a point to make sure it "tasted to my liking or I would be happy to remake it." I mean, where do you get that kind of service anymore? The restrooms are clean and gender neutral which is a good thing. Did I say very clean? The decor is airy and open. It seems to be a building that was once a warehouse of some sort? High ceilings, clean lines, great furniture, and some well chosen art on the walls. Of course, Philz represents Northwestern College just down the street very well. It seems like a place academics hang out, which is another great thing. You just feel smarter being in here. I'm pretty sure this is my Evanston hang out now.

Joshua S.

Yelp
As always, i include the mint mojito on my coffee list, and ive tried the mocha resora and honey haze today. Mint mojito stays as my favorite coffee to get here.

David G.

Yelp
Great coffee. Great muffin. Enough said... oh and the cream on the side had a spoon! I'll be back

David S.

Yelp
Love stopping in and grabbing a hot cup on my way to the Metra. The coffee is smooth and delicious. The staff are always friendly and quick. It's a great place to grab something on the go or pull up and hang out with a lappy.

Jessy K.

Yelp
Love Philz, it has a special place in my heart. The Honey Haze is my favorite drink, but all of it's great. The staff is always super friendly and really cool. I love their fun chalk sign they sometimes change up outside. The whole cafe is comfortable and always has people working. It's a casual environment and doesn't feel stuffy or pretentious.

Ranillo R.

Yelp
My go to Philz Coffee location is this one in Evanston. I never been disappointed ordering a drink here. From an Iced Mint Mojito to a hot Winter Bliss, the drinks are always on consistent and on point. I always order through the app and my drinks are always made on time by the time I get to pick it up. The baristas are really friendly and awesome. It has indoor seating, but no outdoor seating in comparison to the Wicker Park location. They have metered parking right outside as well as a couple of open slots for pick up. Will always come back!

Claire L.

Yelp
Philz Coffee features a great selection of unique coffee drinks and has a cool and modern atmosphere inside the shop. I tried the mint mojito and it was super creamy and refreshing, especially with the addition of the fresh mint leaves. Will definitely be back to try some more!

Quinn A.

Yelp
I just changed my schedule and needed a place to go before school opened... I decided to try Philz and they certainly know their way around a cup of coffee. Coffee shops are pretty stereotypical for grinding out some schoolwork... early in the morning its pretty quiet and empty and perfect for studying. Later in the day, its nice for socializing yet still relatively quiet. The staff are amicable and friendly. The prices are quite reasonable for premium coffee. However if youre looking for a white-girl Starbucks type drink... not your place...

Natalie G.

Yelp
Where to begin? I love everything about this place! The atmosphere, staff and coffee are great. The staff are super friendly and are very helpful. I like how they ask you how you want your coffee: iced or hot, creamer and sweetness level. I like how they have different types of milk/creamer and sugars. I tried the Tantalizing Turkish, Tesora and Iced Mojito. I like how they are very smooth to drink and that they didn't have an acidic or bitter taste. They were really good! The Turkish one is a bolder coffee and the hint of cardamom made it even taste better. The iced mojito felt like a lighter coffee with a smooth light mint finish. The Tesora is a medium coffee with hints of caramel and vanilla. I got that with milk and stevia. Yum! Great place to enjoy your coffee there or to go. Due to COVID, there's limited seating and clear signs where to enter and exit and social distance. The seating areas are clearly marked in how long to stay and which are available. Space is very bright/open/welcoming. Street parking out front.

Georgey Z.

Yelp
The Plant Powered Sandwich is pretty good. Its very hot so allow it to air out. The contents inside (Beyond Meat plant sausage and JUST EGG) will slip out while eating so it can be a little tricky. The sandwich itself is also pricey at $9.25, but it was worth a try. Coffee is a little bitter so best served with cream and sugar. -1 star for value and eh plain black coffee, but nice service and seating.

Yelp
THANK YOU TO PHILZ COFFEE FOR COMING TO CHICAGO AND SURROUNDING AREAS! This California staple is finally here and it took me a long time to come, but mama, I finally made it!! It's COVID, so the norm is no longer the norm. They had an efficient system. They have two doors, and outside door and you walk into another door. That's where the buck stopped. They had a plexi glass and I was able to order what I wanted and they were so helpful. The service is great, and no different than their California locations (except for the cool summer breeze and great state of California). The barista answered all my questions and got to my coffee. The beans are sold whole, but I asked him. Grind them and he did. I LOVE the Tesora blend, a medium roast that had a little nutty and tastes like the beaches of California. I ordered the Mint Mojito coffee. You will never get anything like this anywhere. It's a sweet (not to sweet) latte (and not too heavy) with muddled mint. All their coffee comes with sprigs of mint, but this is absolutely unique and the most delicious coffee I have ever had. They have some great roasts and blends. I hope they open up all over the suburbs and become a monster on Chicago, it's needed here. I love Philz and want this by me!!!

Shannon S.

Yelp
I got the honey haze + egg, cheese & bacon sandwich. Came back two days in a row - 10/10

Linda R.

Yelp
I've never been a fan of Philz simply because I'm an espresso drinker and they offer only pour overs. However, I was out and about and really needed to use the facilities which, for the record, were not particularly clean. As I didn't want to just use their facilities without placing an order, I ordered a specialty coffee. The counter person was quite nice and friendly. I waited an unreasonably long time, though, for a sub par cup of coffee. Here it's not about the coffee, it's all about the branding.

Stacey W.

Yelp
So excited that a Philz opened here in the Chicagoland. It was only when we would travel to San Francisco would we be able to get Philz coffee. Now that they are in the Chicagoland area and even closer, Evanston, we can frequent Philz whenever we want. The store is nice, it feels comfortable and makes a lot of sense as to how it was designed. You walk right in and the coffee counter where they make the fabulous coffee one cup at a time is right in front of you, well lit and lots of space. To your left is the food counter. We came for the soft opening so we got to try a handful of items. The avocado toast, almond butter and jam toast, blueberry muffins, I tried the iced mint mojito. This was my first time trying it and a drink Philz is known for. It was definitely different, if you like mint and coffee this would be a drink for you. I liked the drink but I think I'd still rather prefer one of their other brews which are done so well. I also tried the greater alarm philz way, it was smooth and tasty just right for a cup of coffee. The drinking temperature was just right too, I did not have to wait to drink my cup. The staff was so warm and welcoming. So glad a Philz is now close by, I will be back!

James K.

Yelp
Been having quite the bad run on coffee shops lately. So, the coffee descriptions indicate what would appear to be flavor profiles, when in fact this is flavor added coffee. I DO NOT LIKE flavored coffee. Maybe they have coffees that are not flavored. This I will never know. I am looking forward to this aftertaste leaving my mouth, eventually. Btw, very nice staff and clean and friendly environment.

Aysha A.

Yelp
Love their classic mint mojioto and this location has such kind and friendly servers! I haven't tried their bakery items but maybe next time!

Amy V.

Yelp
In my continued search for the best coffee paired with a chill vibe, I keep saying, I'll know it when I find it. Including London, Paris and Toronto plus cities across the US- I would say this place is rated almost #1. Hannah helped me understand why their beans are superior and (because I told her I just had a coffee elsewhere but need more-) with a casual caution stronger (thank god). I ordered a black coffee and Hannah recommend the Dancing Water ( as if she literally knows my soul!!) , it is truly heaven. I'm not sure if it's my post Covid newly in love post divorce mood or actually this coffee. Probably both. But really the best coffee. Go here.

Luther F.

Yelp
If you're from the West Coast, you know Philz. This branch is the same Philz you know and love, conveniently located in Downtown Evanston. All the drinks here are crafted one cup at a time (in case you didn't know... they'll let you know). Personally, I treat Philz as a "dessert coffee" place - their iced drinks are fantastic and it's nice to indulge a bit by getting them "sweet and creamy". There are some really great flavors at Philz that you really can't get anywhere else (my favorites are the Gingersnap, Mint Mojito, and Tesora). The drinks are strong, so plan your day accordingly. The Philz app makes it really easy to place an order as I'm walking out the door. If they had a more extensive food menu and slightly cheaper drinks, Philz would basically take all of my money.

Keyairra S.

Yelp
I've tried many MANY coffees and Philz probably has the smoothest, velvety coffee I've tried yet. The hazelnut ice latte and mint "mojito" (non-alcoholic) are some of my favorites. Unfortunately there isn't one close to home, but fortunately I was able to buy coffee beans for home. I am a huge fan of Philz! I would highly recommend trying their coffee.

Jacquelyn M.

Yelp
This was my boyfriend's and I first time trying their coffee and we both got a coffee based on our zodiac signs and we LOVED IT! I'm sad they don't have a lot of locations, but would highly recommend!!

Armeen A.

Yelp
Man oh man I am so excited that I have a Philz 10 minutes away from me. I had my first Philz experience a year ago when I took a trip to San Francisco and since then, my life has been changed (for the better obvi). I am a coffee fanatic and Philz sets the bar REALLY high for all of the other coffee shops now. Their service is amazing. Each beverage is truly "hand crafted". And I love that I can always customize my beverage and make any changes after it's been made. My go to order is the Mint Mojito - extra creamy. If you're reading this, drop what you're doing and go get you some Philz!

Angela S.

Yelp
$9.50 for a medium Ambrosia Coffee of God and a blueberry muffin. Coffee is custom here...one cup at a time. On my budget I wouldn't be able to make this my every day stop, but I totally appreciate what Philz is all about. This is the real deal for the true connoisseur. For the experience factor, I'm giving this place 5 stars, because I love the vibe. It's got a cool lofty feel with tons of light, but that's why it's hard to find a seat--I mean who wouldn't want to sit and enjoy the beautiful space? Philz does a great job of catering to students and those who work remotely. They have ample outlets, fantastic WiFi, and I dig the various seating areas that allow for mini gathering sessions. It's super communal and social. In fact, when I walked in it seemed like the crowd really knew each another. On to the coffee. The temperature was perfect. The flavor was intended to have fruity notes and caramel sweetness compliment subtle flavors of bergamot and black tea. They actually asked for my level of sweetness, and served it to me all made up and ready to go with foam on top. Next time I would like to try something different, because by the time I got it home, it seemed to have a strong bitter flavor :-( Blueberry muffin was A-OK! The packaging was fabulous. They also have avocado toast and other small bites to complement your brew. Cool spot, great customer service, and I love that it originated out of San Francisco.

Charisse B.

Yelp
Here for the preview! This Philz has a different look compared to the other locations--admittedly, I've only been to the Wicker Park location prior to my visit but have seen photos of the other Chicagoland outposts. They tailor each location to match the vibe of the neighborhood. Unlike the Wicker Park space which is modern and brand spankin' new, this building seems to have a bit more history--you can tell by the facade. This is the last one to open in Chicagoland, but it's impressive how they opened all four in rapid succession. This one officially opens to the public this Saturday, October 12. There's plenty of seating, outlets and natural light!!! They're good at keeping things consistent, from the service to the product. Their staff is super friendly and cheerful; the baristas are always happy to adjust each cup o' joe to your taste. The cup of Jacob's Wonderbar (Philz way, of course) that I'm sipping on is delightfully nutty, smokey and chocolatey. Finally, what I love more than their products is their passion for connecting with people. They really want people to feel comfortable, to experience something different, and to keep coming back. They want each location to be a community hub. That's exactly why the first Philz location in San Francisco flourished and why the company continues to expand nationwide. Philz, we're thrilled to have you in the North Shore!

Melrose G.

Yelp
I have been here on two occasions. The location is conveniently located in downtown Evanston. The inside is modern and clean. I've had the mint mojito and the chamomile tea. While the mint mojito is unique, the chamomile tea is nothing special. In addition I wanted to try their pastries, but on both occasions there were limited options and nothing looked that great. Hope they can add more items to their limited menu for both drinks and food options.

Tai D.

Yelp
I came here specifically to try out their Coffee Rose and it did not disappoint. It was creamy and sweet with rose flavor which was definitely unique. It maybe even looks like a rose? Looking forward to trying some of their other creations like the "Iced Mint Mojito."

Julia P.

Yelp
I had a great time at the preview for this Philz location! There was a line out the door but the staff did a great job of moving things along smoothly and also made sure to bring out fun goodies to keep us full while we waited. I tried their cheddar scone (a cross between flaky and dense - and super cheesy!), a choco-granola-type bar (kind of like a homemade rx bar), a sweet little coconut cluster, and a small piece of their avocado toast (could've used a tiny bit more salt in my opinion). Oh! And I tried a small piece of a pb&j toast, v yummy, would order again. Clearly you can see they were not stingy with the samples. Also I should mention the shop itself is really nice. There are high ceilings and lots of space for sitting/working/relaxing. They also have free WiFi so this is definitely a great spot to knock out some homework or anything else you may have on your to-do list. Anyways, back to the bevs. Once inside they were really helpful in explaining all their drinks. I settled on a chai tea with oat milk. It was very spice-y and delicious. I could even see said spices at the bottom of the cup when I finished it! The chai tea was on the less sweet side (which I asked for) but if you order a drink "house style" they put in lots of yummy sugar and cream for a delicious & decadent drank. I'll have to try one of their signature lattes that way next time. All in all, no complaints! I had a great time here and I'll definitely be back.

Monty W.

Yelp
Located at the corner of Maple and Oak, Philz is the buzz of the town right now. I always frequent Philz when I'm in SF, and I'm glad I could just jaunt down to Evanston now. I had the Greater Alarm which was nicely balanced and pleasant to drink. Something that I really like about Philz vs other coffee places is their coffee temps are immediately shippable, the ideal temp so as not to burn your mouth. I really liked the friendly staff, they seem to genuinely care. Also for restrooms they have the common sink easily accessible before entering the two unisex toilet rooms. I was fortunate to sample their good pastries on their soft opening weekend. The cheesey scone complements their coffee drinks really well. I really liked the texture of the avocado toast - the breads are hearty and so good. Raisin croissant was yummy and their blueberry muffin was nice and moist. I liked my experience and I'll be back for sure. Meet you there!

Nicole M.

Yelp
I was in the area and needed a cup of coffee. A good solid cup of coffee. I don't add anything to my coffee and if I did this one doesn't need it

Christine S.

Yelp
Ok so the coffee we got was average, dont really see the hype, line was long but it moved fast. The waiting for the coffee took a while and was just ok. BUT we also got avocado toast which was AMAZING..try it!

Josh S.

Yelp
slow service that didn't stem from carefully crafted pour overs so much as just being light staffed. And coffee had a dirt flavor, or so I'd imagine dirt tasting. Pretty bummed by this experience.

Leslie A.

Yelp
Came here after getting off the train from work on a weekday around 6pm. The staff is as friendly and helpful as they are in San Francisco and the bay area. There was barely a line only one other person in front of me but the wait was quite extensive so please be prepared as every cup is truly hand crafted and customized for each drinker. The coffee here does cost slightly more than the average Starbucks however it is worth every penny as the menu does not look anything like a Starbucks or it's other local competing coffee shops. I will come back here I like this place I always have especially in the bay area.

Sue L.

Yelp
Simply decorated, this neighborhood coffee place is conveniently close to the Purple Line and Metra. This cozy store has a small variety of coffee options and snacks. There are intimate chairs and tables strewn around for the comfort of the customers. It seems to be a focal meeting place for students and friends to meet and chat in Evanston. At times the lines for coffee appears long waiting to order but with patience the line dwindles quickly.

Maria C.

Yelp
Worth the drive! Drove all the way from Naperville to Evanston to try your "Coffee Rosè" which was highly recommended by my friend from California. To tell you the truth, it was difficult to describe how exquisite it tasted! Will definitely come back again. The staff was efficient and nice.

Ohn F.

Yelp
$5 for a Blueberry Muffin because they know suburban idiots who can't cook or meal prep will pay for it. $6.30 for a bacon and egg sandwich. $20 for a 1lb bag of their own freaking coffee. You can get 1lb bag of actually organic coffee at a grocery store for $8.. thanks for the insider discount Philly boi. Although you can't blame them for doing it because the only thing to do in Evanston is walk around buying trash for most of their consumers

Sofia K.

Yelp
I think I would definitely, definitely commit a minor crime if it meant I could get free Philz for like a year. 6 months even. I would do it

Annalise S.

Yelp
Delicious and unique coffee. Super smooth, never get caffeine jitters. Love their app and how easy ordering is!

Xiao Z.

Yelp
Love Philz Coffee even though I'm not much of a coffee drinker myself. Their coffee is great! Food is ok. Mint mojito is great. Refreshing light and just the right amount of sweetness. The baristas are very nice and will customize it based on your preferences. Iced coffee rose. This is definitely my favorite. The rose cream on top is a nice touch to the iced coffee. Unique and delicious! Iced Tesora. This is one of their original drinks. Would order again as it has a medium boldness but super smooth and you do get a hint of the vanilla. Ginger snap. Not bad but but I'm biased because I'm not much of a spices and nutmeg person. Would try it next time hot instead of cold. Food is not bad. Order the ricotta and jam toast or avocado toast. Not overly sweet and the bread has a good texture. The almond jam toast is good as well. I didn't love their sweet pastries. A bit too sweet for me. Morning bun is a recommend.

Lauren P.

Yelp
Can we bring a philz coffee now to the southwest burbs... Naperville maybe!?? I love that this coffee spot is right by my parents!!! And the mobile app to pre-order your coffee is money!!! They've got a prime spot in Evanston and the vibes and ambience inside is just so chic and comfy. I'll take another iced tesora thank you very much!
