San Francisco’s Most Iconic Drinks | Eater SF

"These days, Philz Coffee has locations all over Bay Area and as far south as Los Angeles, but never forget that this chain started here in San Francisco and remains a hometown favorite for a quick caffeine boost. The most popular drink is the Mint Mojito, an iced coffee beverage inspired by the cocktail of the same name. It’s made with pour-over coffee alongside fresh mint, sugar, and heavy cream." - Lauren Saria

How to Spend 24 Food-Filled Hours in San Francisco’s Mission Bay Neigborhood Like a Local - Eater SF

"Slurping a mint mojito from San Francisco’s own Philz while strolling through the stadium’s weekly Sunday market is a primo way to start the day. Local producers including Airborne Roasters and Native Baking are typically on deck." - Paolo Bicchieri

Google
The LARGEST Philz Coffee that I have seen. Love the whole ambience. Coffee is obviously always good.

Google
I’m giving 5 stars right off the bat for the music. I’m sitting at the cafe with my Iced Mocha Tesora (I like it extra Creamy 😂) and pastries. I’m having a wave of nostalgia, listening to all my favorite New Wave/Modern Rock songs (several Depeche Mode songs, Siouxsie, The Cult, The Cure, etc.). Feels like I’m listening to old Live 105 KITS. 😂 Any place where you can hear Cities in Dust, Never Let Me Down Again, It’s No Good and In Between Days is automatically awesome. The pastries are from STARTER BAKERY, so that’s also a plus. Plenty of tables/seating. Nice place to hangout while waiting for a Warriors game or just any time you are in the area.

Great place to grab a drink and some pastries before the concert. Smart place to use the bathroom before Chase Center doors are open. Nice comfortable seats and space.

What a great addition to thrive city! Located in the corner behind dumpling time, right next to the entrance of Uber! we've been anticipating the open of this new Philz location! Decided to stop by at lunch time to grab a coffee with some coworkers. Walking up to Philz there was lots of Uber employees sitting outside since it is in the middle of Mission Bay Campus. It was a nice day to hang out outside, sitting in the sun and lots of people took advantage of there outdoor seating to grab some coffee. I decided to try out a Mocha Tesora with almond milk & bacon and onion pretzel. My best friend grabbed a Mint Mojito ice coffee and chocolate croissant. Since this was my first time trying Philz I didn't know what to expect, but I enjoyed seeing that they have a wide variety of pasty's available. I liked my coffee, wasn't bitter and not over sweet ( but still would have perfected it sweeter for my taste but really good either way) , next time I know to order it sweetened and extra hot, it was a bit too Luke warm for me but I also like my coffee extremely hot. I really enjoyed my bacon and onion croissant, nice and warm, crispy but flaky. Would definitely get again. He said his Mint Mojito Iced Coffee was good too, creamy and sweet and not too strong. The amount of mint added was good and he really liked the presentation of the coffee and how it stayed within the traditional way a Mojito is presented. He hadn't had it in a long time and was better then he remembered. He definitely would get it again. Really like the seating inside, very spacious and inviting. Long counters of barristas making coffee, they Even have a small table of Philz coffee and tshirts for you to buy. Looking forward to being able to try all the different food and beverage options when we stop by in the middle of the day for a quick pick me up!

Google
I’ve been a fan of Philz since I was in college and remember walking into the original location, not having a clue what they would grow to. Recently I’ve been coming to UCSF Mission Bay a lot and the drive from the East Bay is much more pleasant knowing there’s Philz waiting for me. I gotta be honest, I think today’s order was messed up. But, it was probably my fault. I love Philz and they can do no wrong. By the way, the bagel and the banana bread are absolutely delicious.

Google
I get Philz pretty consistently but yesterday Paulina made one of the best ecstatic's I ever had! Thanks Paulina , I woke up today thinking about how good it was. The staff here is among the best of all their locations, polite and helpful. This is my preferred location

Google
Well, I thought since it's high-quality coffee that their hot chocolate would be decent. Oh my. But no. Watery. Like I almost could have had a Swiss Miss packet. The one thing in its favor was that it wasn't too sweet. I would have asked for a redo but had to rush back to work.

Tobin J

Google
Drinks were wonderful! Place is entirely wheelchair accessable and the vibes are very chill.

Yelp
Really appreciate that they're open early! This spot is quiet in the mornings but can fill up fast in the afternoons. The high ceilings definitely makes the space feel less cramped, plenty of space to do work. I like to place my order on the app so that my order is ready by the time I get there.

Yelp
Philz Coffee, particularly this location, has become a significant part of my coffee drinking journey. I recall the day I had my first Mocha Tesora, and then the Mint Mojito the very next. As of now, I have tried nearly all of the dark and medium blends as well as the featured creations. I tend to stick with the original blends with my favorites being Tesora, Philtered Soul, and Jacob's Wonderbar. The Pork Sausage & Egg Burrito used to be my favorite food item but didn't taste nearly as good in the recent months. Perhaps a change in recipe or supplier is to blame? Most of the baristas are great and there are three names in particular that I hope are on the cup because they make it so much better. One barista even remade my coworker's drink when I had ordered incorrectly. Another, however, is notorious amongst my coworkers for being dismissive and unfriendly but I feel like this sentiment simply isn't true for the rest. The establishment itself is nice and roomy, providing a decent workspace for some. Currently, I tend to make my own coffee at home in pursuit of specialty and organic coffee, but I'd never hesitate to stop by Philz. And while I prefer relatively fresh roasted beans, you can be sure that I always have a bag of Tesora beans in my pantry.

Yelp
The person who took my order acted like I was annoying her because I didn't know all the choices for coffee but..... The person who made my coffee was super nice. Coffee was bomb! I would love a quick " are you familiar with our choices for coffee" and then I would know how to order better in the future.

Yelp
This is probably my second home, I'm here almost everyday. The location is so convenient, it's across the street from where I work. And bc I'm here frequently, I've gotten to know the staff. Shout out to Tyler! I love sitting on the comfy armchairs in the back. It's so nice to just melt into them. This is the place I get my afternoon chais (medium oat milk, light sugar). I love their chais bc one they're affordable, even after a price increase, and two, I like mine spicy and they do it just right in my opinion . I tend to get the small which is $4.45 and they don't charge extra for oat milk! With the SF mandate, it comes out to $4.61. And that's pretty much anything you get on the menu. I've spent $7-8 on lattes elsewhere and that's just the norm. I think I support this business with 1% of my paychecks but I have to say I enjoy talking to the staff and my drinks end up tasting yum.

Angie S.

Yelp
I wasn't made aware of the level of sweetness. If i would have known, I think I would have enjoyed it.
google avatar

Gillynn C.

Yelp
The iced mint mojito did not have as much flavor as I remember. Perhaps it's because they don't muddle the mint anymore. The bacon and egg burrito was delicious It was nice and hot and big chunks of eggs. The line was t too bad and we did get our drink and food quickly.

Yelp
SERVICE: baristas are nice & they are very speedy compared to other philz locations i've been to. cashier seemed upset to be there tho DRINKS: this location has never disappointed me :)

wendy h.

Yelp
what can i say ?! love this location. fast and efficient. i hate how it's so close to my job and i have to spend (almost) everyday to get my mint mojito. somebody pls send help! keep up the great work!

Yelp
This Philz is spacious and has lots of places to sit both inside and a few outside. There's never usually a line here and the drinks come out perfectly and quickly! There's not too many plugs here but if you are looking for somewhere to casually hang out, then this is great for you. It is right next to Chase Center so ideally you'd already be in the area. I wouldn't come park here just for Philz. I love the Mint Mojito, but recently I've been getting the Ecstatic Iced Coffee (because it has one of the highest caffeine contents but sweet chocolate flavor) or the Philtered Soul with a hint of hazelnut. If you have never been to Philz, then just know it's not your typical coffee shop. I always order my coffee "Sweet and Creamy"! If you don't like how your drink comes out, you can always let the barista know and they will remake the drink to your taste. Usually it's always great for me though :)

Yelp
Philz is the only coffee that actually keeps me awake. Despite the long lines during peak hours the food and coffee always comes out fast. The staff are so nice and always makes my drink to perfection. For my usual order I love getting the bacon burrito and a Mocha Tesora. Super convenient location next to UCSF and the Chase Center. Lots of space and tables to do work as well.
google avatar

Lisa X.

Yelp
One of my favorite coffee houses in the City and we have no shortage of coffee places here. This one is nearby the Chase Center, UCSF, UBER, etc. The staff here are so friendly too. Lots of tables available for enjoying coffee and doing some work outside the office. This location has two unisex bathrooms and both kept pretty clean. All the Philz I have been to also has puppy treats and this is no exception. Thanks for yummy coffee, great service and nice interior.

Yelp
Mint mojito will always be my go to. You can never go wrong with this delicious beverage
google avatar

Yelp
My first time at a Philz Ordered Tesora with oat milk (medium) with sweet honey, hot. It was delicious! No espresso, just strong coffee UPDATE: came here a second time and ordered the rose coffee with oak milk and honey (instead of sugar), i absolutely LOVED UT! This is my new fave

Yelp
You can never go wrong with a trip to Philz, but this location in particular impressed me more than some of the others that I have been to. They are quicker than most locations, and the baristas have always been very friendly. There's plenty of seating options, and it's a good place to read a book or get some work done! Bonus points for the dog treats at the register!

Yelp
I've been to about 3 Philz Coffee establishments and while this is the most prettiest one, I honestly was kinda disappointed in my drink. I ordered a regular-sized mint mojito and was expecting some mint leaves on top of my drink as that is what other Philz locations do. As I shrugged that off, when I was tasting the drink, it barely tasted like there was any mint there. Usually, this drink has a strong mint flavor which is why I order it. Also, the sweetness of the drink isn't well dispersed so all of it was really overpowering as well as the mint at the bottom made it taste not so well. I'm honestly pretty disappointed with my drink here. I honestly wouldn't come by to this location again.

Yelp
Thank you Philz for being open before the Warriors game! The Mocha Tesora was the pick me up I needed! Site is located next to Chase Center. Clean restrooms Order was quick! Good service Would do it again!

Yelp
I really don't think Dubs fans really need caffeine. By the time they get to Chase Center in packs, they're so jacked up on Warriors-ignited adrenaline that I pray they're ordering decaf. Otherwise I assume the baristas will need to peel them off the ceiling with a large blue & gold spatula. Otherwise I got no complaints about this particular location. Philz is Philz, and this one's pretty cavernous with a lot of Philz merch. Gee, where's the Dubs merch? Anyway, I got my $5.35 Large Silken Splendor without incident. Light light, of course (photo: https://bit.ly/3sAUU1i). Even though I was surrounded by highly vocal fans in full Warriors regalia. I felt like an outsider about to be recruited like a Scientology seminar. Time to go. COFFEE - 4 stars...smooth though it took a while to cool AMBIANCE - 4 stars...a more spacious Philz SERVICE - 4 stars...they keep their cool even though the Dubs fans were pumped TOTAL - 4 stars...the Dubs need their Philz or at least their fans do in all their Warriors wear RELATED - Exploring Mission Bay? Here's a collection of places I've visited and reviewed: https://bit.ly/2JVPV55

Yelp
Coffee again? Well, a perfect storm happened when my friend ran late in meeting me for the final Warrior home game of the season. Not wanting to hang out outside, I decided to grab a cold drink while waiting. Having only tried Philz twice before, I am not familiar with their menu so I asked the cashier for recommendations. She asked whether I was a fan of mint flavor and told her just so-so. I asked about and ultimately ordered the iced ecstatic (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=PoAk4L4B3VCUl4wyRNXQ_w&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q); the coffee flavor was present though the chocolate flavor dominated but didn't overwhelm this drink. I nursed this while sitting at a center table inside. The tables were nicely socially distanced so everyone seemed comfortable in the 30% occupied seating area. There was a steady flow of customers, a mix of game attendees and neighborhood work staff. There are a few outdoor tables and seats available too. The cashier was cheerful and energetic while the baristas were putting the drinks efficiently together. I had a minor mishap (spill) while trying to put a lid on my drink and one barista wiped down the mess I made on the counter. Will come again, likely if I'm early for a game or need to quench my thirst or craving.

Yelp
I've been coming to Philz a few times since May 1st (how long I've been in SF for). I've not been disappointed with a coffee at all! Perfect from every barista. Today (the 20th) I came in and the barista right off the back was so nice to me! I let her know this may be my last Philz coffee til the next time my partner and I are in town. (We've been here recovering from surgery) she was so quick to make my coffee on the house! Which never happens to me so it made me feel really good. I love the energy y'all have here, from the art on the wall, the dope open concept gender neutral bathrooms, to everyone's kindness. Thank you for being the better coffee place... I was getting so tired of Pete's But here is amazing!
google avatar

Juan V.

Yelp
Maybe the best Philz coffee I had when it comes to the ice mocha. The flavor of the coffee was delicious. Cool that this place is next to Chase Center. A good place overall.
google avatar

Melissa A.

Yelp
I'm soo happy that there's NOW a Philz "especially" at Warriors Chase Center. During events they're open til 10pm. Regular time,6pm. Boohoo. But at least I get to have my favorite drink, Iced mint mojito, sweet&creamy! Especially after a winning game! The staff is friendly & welcoming as always, and they made my drink so picture perfect.

Yelp
Awful... I went in and ordered a coffee and gave the cashier my $10 bill and he said "sorry we don't accept cash" What kind of business doesn't accept cash? So I asked him "why?" I expected him to say something about not having enough change or the cash drawer being broken but he said "I will go ask my boss" He came back a few seconds later and said "I don't know why we're not doing it old school" Newsflash - cash isn't old school - cash is KING !! I had a card on me but it's not how I wanted to pay. And to call it "old school" is insulting as I'm not Old and I don't look old either. I'm not 20 but I'm far from a senior citizen. It was just rude. A better explanation would be "we are afraid of getting robbed so we don't accept cash anymore." My drink was decent though... so there is your one star. I won't go back again. But seriously ... I don't even think it's legal to turn away a CASH paying customer.

Yelp
This location is located right next to the Chase Center. I had a few appointments at Kaiser nearby so I decided to work from here in between my appointments. They have plenty of seating inside and outside. Most wall plugs are seats along the wall. I came around 10:30am and they were out of most pastries. Drinks are solid across all Philz coffee locations. On game days they are open late!

Yelp
Generally I don't get coffee from here because it just takes too long. But I get a pastry here every once in a while. Today I tried their pumpkin bread (4.30 plus tip), and received what amounted to a not even half inch thick of bread. I usually don't say anything to staff members when I eat somewhere that disappoints because much is out of their control. But today I had to ask if they were all this size, the guy behind the counter just kind of shrugged and showed me another slice and they were all cut super small. I work in food and have owned my own food business and know how hard it is, but the ingredients for a whole loaf of pumpkin bread is $1-2 dollars depending on your sourcing. Do better or tell your pastry company (Starter Bakery I believe) to do better.

Yelp
As a nurse who works across the street from this location this place is amazing. like all other philz the quality is always solid and reliable. and sooooo happy their mobile app works well. I can just order my coffee and walk over in and out and not waste too much of my break. The staff here are friendly and welcoming. Just be aware because its next to chase center on event days this location gets packed and crazy. However during the week and normal hours its great
google avatar

Danielle M.

Yelp
The app says they are open until 6pm I placed an order at 5:28 the accepted the order, took my money, and gave me a pick up time of 5:35 my partner left and got there at 5:37 and they were closed. Just after my partner was at the door I got a notification that they were refunding me. This is not the first Philz that advertises certain hours and closes before. Please update the app or have employees stay until the store closes instead of giving refunds and leaving early.
google avatar

Alix J.

Yelp
I came here since it's somewhat new location, I was disappointed that the outdoor furniture on a nice day in SF was stacked up by the door of the Philz location. Didn't feel welcomed, instead I wanted to leave after getting my mint mojito. I have been to all the other locations and they were better than this place!
google avatar

Eddie B.

Yelp
Cool coffee shop. Ive had the Philtered Soul Cold Brew several times. Each time the drink leaves me wanting another one. My wife had the Mocha Tesora, which she said was average. Nice little shop in a great location by Chase Center. Stop in and Phil'er up!
google avatar

Victoria W.

Yelp
Out of all the Philz across Mission Bay and Potrero, this newest branch has the best and most friendly baristas who make the best coffees, whether it be hot, cold, sweet and or creamy... I used to go to the Philz on Berry while living in Avalon on King, but these days it just tastes super burnt and I thought perhaps I just wasn't a fan of Philz anymore...... so so glad the Warriors Way store here opened up and proved me wrong on that! I hope this store maintains its quality baristas AND especially the quality of the Philz coffee. I'm also a huge fan of the large indoor open seating area that does at times get crowded, but never so busy that you can't find a table. Oh, and there are a handful of outdoor seats too. Like all Philz, super dog-friendly, treats a-plenty too!
google avatar

Amelia L.

Yelp
I regularly come to this Philz to work as there is plenty of seating and tables, as well as outlets and wifi! That being said, it can get pretty busy in the mornings on weekdays with many others doing work on their laptops or having morning coffee chats. The service is always quick & the bathrooms are very clean. I love stopping by here for the perfect sweet caffeine pick me up (mint mojito & julies ultimate are my favs!)
google avatar

Aileen P.

Yelp
I just went there on what is suppose to be working hours (5:30pm) per their online website and door display but when I arrived the doors were locked, chairs were up and well they were closed. Please update your hours to reflect your true hours. When it's accurate I'll update my review
google avatar

Iryna P.

Yelp
Great place for coffee, to hang out and relax. The coffee is always on point and I love the variety they offer. Their pastries are also very delicious and desserts are locally sourced.

Brenda M.

Yelp
We love Philz, great coffee but staff is not friendly. They don't greet you unlike other locations. Baristas seemed annoyed that we entered.
google avatar

Fred F.

Yelp
I spent a few days in the neighborhood and it seems that many of the food establishments are following the same pattern: ceilingless and unnecessaily large spaces, industrial look, rectangular edges, hard surfaces, hard furniture, nothing to soften the sound of conversations so the place sounds like a railroad station. There croissant was soft and its crust was not flaky but it did not taste fresh even though I was told it was fresh.
google avatar

Melissa B.

Yelp
Love Philz coffee. First time I had it while in San Francisco - I'm a huge fan!!! Wish I had one local to me

Amy _.

Yelp
Ok, I apologize to the woman who took my order two days ago when I arrived about 1pm. I was hot, thirsty and just wanted a simple iced tea. But Philz had four different iced teas. I did not want to spend the time to read the descriptions of each. I noticed that one was tiled "black" which I assumed was a simple quick black tea iced tea, so I quickly ordered that one w/o reading the description. Yikes, $4.67, a little pricey for an iced tea. It took a few minutes to get my order, but was it ever worth it! It was a good tea (not cheap stuff). The tea was full in flavor (ie, not diluted). And there was a sprig of fresh mint which added an amazing bit of fun fresh flavor. This may have been one of the best iced teas I've ever had, and I used to drink tea religiously. Thank you Philz and for the nice staff two days ago. Of note, I have had their drip coffee there previously and it is far too citrus-y for myself and my companion.

Grechen B.

Yelp
Walked in for a coffee. Lots of people behind the counter working. Got ignored. They chatted. One made herself a drink. Waited. Asked if they were taking orders. Not me, said one of them as she walked away. So I left. Lousy service
google avatar

Allister D.

Yelp
How awesome to have a Philz Coffee at the Chase Center! What an accomplishment. I'm so glad this is a homegrown coffee shop rather than a Starbucks or a local chain like Peet's. This location has limited seating so make sure to grab a seat quick; I highly recommend the table next to the large window. The baristas are friendly as usual and the drinks are made the same. I'm just super happy there is a Philz at the Warriors stadium!
google avatar

Sofia R.

Yelp
Stopped by for a quick iced coffee to-go. This was my first time at this location! The venue is spacious and clean. Hardly a line, there were still quite a few pastries left in the display left for a Wednesday afternoon but I had to hold back. Service was great as usual with my experience at other spots. I ordered an Ecstatic Iced Coffee. Great quality! Though I do think that the sizes have gotten smaller, or at least that's what it seems to me. Overall, great experience! I loved my coffee. I wished I had ordered a larger size!
google avatar

Greg B.

Yelp
Custom coffee experiences, order your favorite blend or one of their tasty coffee drinks, hot, cooked or with as much flavoring as you need. They're best known for coffee and tea served with plenty of minty goodness and locally sourced eats. Their drinks are made one at a time, not fast food.
google avatar

Bailey M.

Yelp
I absolutely love going to this Philz! The staff is great - super kind and courteous - and the coffee is the best. Great location too.
google avatar

Xiu L.

Yelp
Still my favorite craft coffee. I drink it every day. Service is always great. The staff seems funky and laid back but nice. Not very diverse though.
google avatar

Nivita V.

Yelp
First time here and it's my favorite Philz in SF now. Fast, friendly service + free wifi + great coffee + fabulous music playlist + great location nxt to Chase Center. It has a very spacious layout, perfect lighting, and I especially loved that they have plenty of comfy seating options (beautiful wooden tables for 2, communal/group tables, lounge chairs). It's the perfect place to bring your laptop and get some work done or meetup with colleagues/friends!

Ashlyn R.

Yelp
10/10 customer services. The baristas were super nice and remade my drink. I got an iced drink but when it tasted super watery and not like it was supposed to at all-- I asked if they could add spices which they did, and remade the drink and I asked if they could make it hot when they remade it hoping that would help make it taste creamier and less like water. They were super nice about remaking it but it still just tastes super watery. 10/10 ambiance and 11/10 baristas but I can't get behind watered down.
google avatar

kathleen A.

Yelp
Love Philz! They have the best customer service, tasty food, and perfect coffee. One tip is if you like matcha green tea, try the green tea with cream and honey. It's delicious.
google avatar

Ken K.

Yelp
Great place for a cup of coffee and nice decorations inside. It's new location right next to Chase Center.

Kaye K.

Yelp
Any Philz I've been too outside of this one location have been pleasant. Not a fan of this location. Always seems to be something lacking... service, speed and efficiency or just knowledge of items sold. Today I was told all the drinks have the same amount of caffeine. Really? Probably gonna be walking down the street from now on to get my coffee. It's rough, but service is everything to me over quality of the item.
google avatar

Paul S.

Yelp
This was our first visit to a Philz. It will be our last. First, they don't do espresso. I don't really care for regular coffee, so that kills it. My daughter ordered a "hot" chocolate. It wasn't hot. It wasn't even luke warm. It was cool, like it had been hot and then been put in the refrigerator. It was also way too sweet. The almond croissant was good, though and the service was friendly.

Yelp
Great coffee and great interior. My mask could hardly cover the alluring smell of coffee and pastries combined. Was surprised to see one of the reviews unhappy with the customer service. My husband and I had a wonderful time and the staffs were very friendly and polite as far as we could tell.
