Phipps Plaza is a five-star mall. Outside of Miami, it's probably the nicest mall in the Southeast. It's unique and one of a kind in that it's truly an upscale mall. It's evident from its fine anchors (Nordstrom, formerly Lord & Taylor; Belk formerly Parisian; and Saks Fifth Avenue) and tenants (e.g. Giorgio Armami, Jimmy Choo, Gucci, Versace, Tiffany & Co, etc.). Expectedly, most people can't afford to shop here on a regular basis, which leaves the shops, boutiques, and interior of this mall feeling dead and deserted. That's not a bad thing, though, because Phipps provides a welcome break from all the hustle and bustle across the street at Phipps' sister mall Lenox Square.
Phipps typically has ultra high-end automobiles showcased on its marble floors. In the past, I've seen Aston Martins, Bentleys, and Lamborghinis. The interior decor of the mall itself is posh. Along with the aforementioned marble, the space is filled with plenty of mahoghany and exquisite ceiling treatments. The center of the mall features a giant ornate chandelier with a wide, winding, carpeted, grand staircase. A six-story glass elevator can take you from the third floor of the mall to the third level of the parking deck. Along the way, you'll pass through a semi-hidden fountain.
Food court selection is respectable and restaurants are solid. The restaurants are generally in the same class as the mall. They include Cafe Bistro at Nordstrom, Twist (trendy seafood/sushi), Davio's (upscale Italian), and The Tavern. The Tavern is known for having one of Atlanta's most attractive waitstaffs, something I can personally attest to. Twist and The Tavern, both of which have patios, always seem to be packed on the weekends.
As with many malls, a good time to visit Phipps is during Thanksgiving and Christmas. I think the holiday decorations and the Santa Claus here are among the best anywhere. Phipps also has a 14-screen AMC movie theater. I've seen a few movies as well as attended a movie screening here.
