18 Restaurants That Are Actually Worth Waiting In Line For

"If you live in San Francisco, Nyum Bai has two waits: the one at the restaurant and the one in the ride to Oakland. But it’s one of those places that if a friend called us up and asked us to drop what we were doing to venture over, we’d hang up the phone in a dead sprint to their house. This is not only because that’s how much we’d want to go, but also so we can arguably have worked out enough to merit ordering more food. From the banana leaf salad to the pork belly Koh, we love everything here, so the running is very justified." - will kamensky

The Outdoor Greatest Hits List

"We would eat at Nyum Bai if it was hailing angry cats outside, so when the weather is great, you can count on us crossing the Bay Bridge regularly to go to this Cambodian spot in Fruitvale. Part of the restaurant is outside, so if you’re desperate for some sunlight, you can sit out here, but you’ll end up waiting out there for a table anyway. Everything you order will be great, but we like the crispy catfish, pork belly koh, and the banana leaf salad that will cool you off faster than sitting on a bag of ice." - will kamensky

Came for dinner. Friendly server seated us promptly. They had mostly 2-4 tops but combined tables for us. The stuffed chicken wings were still my favorite after many years. Pork was also flavorful. They have a good variety of good. Iced coffee was sweet and limeade was fresh. It was a great place to catch up with friends.

Google
Amazing place after we went windsurfing in Alameda! Good: - Loved the papaya salad - super fresh and also the spice added a lot - Singapore noodles had a huge portion size - had good curry sauce but a tad too plain - The chicken boneless eggroll dish was so unique! I don't think I could have finished it though since it was huge - Fried banana and sesame ice cream was so memorable, definitely get it - The service was so fast, and they checked in so often - Cute spot for a date day! Loved how clean and sunny it was inside Bad: - The meal was on the more expensive side but we shared a lot! Overall enjoyed the experience a lot here and would recommend!

This is an absolute gem of a restaurant! The food is delicious, and the service is super friendly. The gentleman serving us was extremely warm and welcoming. We tried the egg rolls, Singapore noodles, lemongrass beef skewers, and one of the daily specials, a shrimp and eggplant dish in a tamarind garlic sauce. Everything was spectacular! And extremely reasonably priced as well.

This is one of my favorite Cambodian restaurants in the East Bay. There are two, one in the Laurel on MacArthur and the other on Webster Street in Alameda. They both originated from the same spot in Chinatown many years ago. Today for lunch I had the barbecue pork ribs that are marinated in a lemongrass sauce that is popular throughout south Asia. Tender and extremely tasty, I jumped on them before I remembered to take a photo of the entire half a dozen ribs in a serving. Here are the remaining two. Another excellent meal at a very fair price!

I’ve always wanted to try Cambodian food and parking isn’t too hard here in Oakland. We came here on a Monday evening and it wasn’t too busy, there was just one server and maybe one cook but felt very homey. We ordered the spicy papaya salad but it wasn’t too spicy. It was a hot day outside so we drank lots of water, there is no ac in the restaurant. We also ordered the stuffed chicken wings, pork rib, vegetarian duck, and Singapore noodles. Lots of flavor and some spices, we started adding more of the chili sauce to the dishes and made it more spicy. Since it was a hot day we didn’t try any of the curry or soups but I think I’d like to in the future. I would say it reminded me of like a Thai and Indian mix of food.

Google
Cambodian cuisine in a cozy cottage. This restaurant is really cute and the food is delicious! They are a bit more meat-focused than Thai fare, but have a selection of vegetarian options. We had the Pranok Katis appetizer (105) which was a mildly spicy coconut pork curry with lots of sliced vegetables. We also had the pork spare ribs and char broiled chicken. Delicious! The decorations sent me down a rabbit hole reading about Khmer history as well, which is fascinating ☺️

Great place for Malaysian food… owner operated so you’re getting home cooking…

Google
I was in the mood for peanut sauce and they definitely didn't disappoint. Everything we ordered was delicious. The owner was really friendly and made even a first timer like me feel like a regular. Will definitely come again!

Yelp
We have come here for years. Love for hosting guests. Love take out. Quick and good. In restaurant excellent service. Accessible food, but also off the beaten path. Love the curries and the veggies. Truly great family business. Please support.

Yelp
We came to Phnom Penh on a Saturday around 12:30pm and was seated immediately. It was our first time here, and we will certainly be back! We got the stuffed chicken wings, beef skewers, and duck curry. We both agree that all 3 dishes were hits! It was more than enough for both of us, and we took some home. The chicken wings are stuffed to the max. I am usually not a fan of lemongrass, but the beef skewers had a lot of flavor and the lemongrass was not overpowering. PEANUT ALLERGY: the fish sauce typically comes with peanuts, but the kitchen left the peanuts out. No weird sensation after eating!

Yelp
The food was absolutely amazing. I ordered the stuffed chicken, spicy papaya salad and the basil fried rice with double shrimp (do it!). The only thing that was missing was the "spicy" on my papaya salad. It was only shredded papaya, carrot, peanut and shrimp. No chili's. I came when they first opened so I'm sure it was a simple mistake. Just check your bag if you are doing take out. I totally recommend getting the Cambodian iced tea to top it off. I'll be back! -Niki

Yelp
Surprisingly delicious little restaurant. Loved the tofu yellow curry. So fresh- definitely housemade. The spring rolls were great- served piping hot. And the chicken moarn ang kreun was seasoned so well and tender.

Yelp
I ordered takeout from then and tried their Spicy Papaya Salad with shrimp, Charbroiled Beef Skewers, and Boneless Chicken Wings. The total came to around $75, which I found a bit pricey for just three items. The food itself was great, with flavors that were on point. I highly recommend the Slaap Moarn Borg (boneless chicken wings) - they were delicious! However, I noticed a strange taste in the veggies, almost like a cleaning product, which was off-putting. Overall, while the food was tasty, the high price and the odd taste in the veggies left me with mixed feelings.

Yelp
The portions were good for sharing. One plate is enough for two people. The sweet basil rice was strong in basil flavor. There was a good mix of chicken and rice. The eggplant was soft under all the pork with only a few pieces of shrimp. The taste was a new taste for me! Always great to try new dishes. Our waiter was very nice!

Yelp
Phnom Penh House (est '86) is a Cambodian family-owned and run that serve decades-old destination for noodles, curries & soups in a cozy, artful space. This is the place where you can get a taste of Cambodia-South East Asia in the Bay Area. I came here to grab dinner. I was warmly greeted by a young female staff. I ordered a Moarn Chha Jee, Chicken Fried Rice, Iced water and lemonade. Food tastes good and has prodigious servings. Drinks were refreshing. Interior design was infused with Cambodian culture. Atmosphere was relaxing. Prices were economically fair. Street parking only. Overall, I had a good supper and dine-in experience. I recommend this restaurant.

Yelp
Loved the food here, big portions. Service was attentive. Plenty of space to talk and hear each other.

Yelp
Stopped by here around 6:15 pm on a Friday and got seated right away. The staff is incredibly friendly and always checking up to make sure we were good. The food was delicious and satisfying. The spicy papaya salad was crunchy and refreshing. The noum om beng was tasty as well, the inside filled with stir fried pork, red onions, and bean sprouts. Was hoping it would be a bit crispier. The sachkor ang was the star of the show. The beef was incredibly tender and not chewy like at other places. The lemongrass makes the meat flavorful and makes it perfect for eating it with rice and fish sauce. Would stop by again next time to try the other dishes. Recommend to those who are in the area to support this local business!

Yelp
I have been coming here for over 20 years. It is one of my local go to spots when I can't think of anything to eat or cook. The older gentleman that works there always greats all his customers with a smile. You can tell that he is grateful for every person that comes into his establishment. You cannot go wrong with anything on the menu. My family loves: BEEF STICKS EGG PLANT & PORK (Traop Ang) Pad See Eew Tom Yum Soup Fried Pompano Fish Those are our usual go to's. We'll sometimes throw in a shrimp dish and vegetable dish in there as well. If you're new to this type of cuisine, choose from the items I mentioned above. The stuffed chicken is a good one to try too. I highly recommend this business and will continue to show it my support. It is a family favorite.

Yelp
I can't believe I haven't been going here sooner! The flavor is unbelievable and the portions are perfect for a family style. We got 5 dishes for 7 people and still had left overs. The store is cute and comfortable.

Yelp
Hidden gem. Check out the specials for lunch. Should be on a board outside of the front door. See pic. I have had the chicken with eggplant and the BBQ pork ribs. Both are a winners but I have ordered the ribs more times. The papaya salad (with shrimp) was delicious. I have no idea how to eat or prepare papaya but this was shredded together with carrots, seasoned with a mild spicy sauce and finished with Thai basil and peanuts. If you have the allergy, let them know in advance. It had the flavor of crispy, crunchy, fresh and the bite of sauce. Great starter or side. The foodie in me has driven me to try Sawlaw Machhou Phnom Pehh. If you have ever had a soup with tamarind ( Philippines is sinigang), but this offering has pineapple chunks. It's the perfect mix and match. You have to like (boneless.) fish and tail on shrimp. It's a pleasant combination and I would always order when I eat there. The fella that waited is the owner and he is attentive and polite. Wife cooks (most excellent) and daughter waits occasionally. I support local and family businesses like this. Note: update add sandwich boards. Try it.

Yelp
This place was solid! The staff was friendly the tea was great, the appetizer which was a set of rolls was good, the service was excellent! Not too busy but a good amount of to go orders coming in! I devoured everything! I will aim to return!

Yelp
This small restaurant packs a lot of flavor and delicious dishes! We got the papaya salad (little spice) with shrimp, beef skewers, and kary khmer. Everything was good, but my favorite was the beef skewers because of the lemongrass. I also like the papaya salad because it was refreshing. It wasn't packed for a late dinner Friday night, so service was fast and easy. They always came by to refill our water. The interior was yellow, small and decorated with Cambodian art work. I would come back to try the other dishes!

Yelp
I enjoy eating here when I'm in town. They always satisfy my tastebuds. I've been coming here for 5 years and I must say I can be hard to please however this place never disappoints me!!! I try something different all the time and I'm always happy . They are quick and fast with their service whether ordering takeout or dining in!!

Yelp
Always delicious food and very reasonably priced. Great neighborhood feel. Very welcoming and pleasant staff.

Yelp
The food was pretty bland. We got the papaya salad, chicken with peanut sauce, and Singaporean noodles. The peanut sauce unfortunately was nothing to write home about. There was only one server working, and she seemed like she was in a bad mood. She rarely made eye contact, and she dropped items at our table and turned away in a single motion. Granted, it was lunchtime, and things were starting to pick up. They should probably have a second server working then. It was quite pricy as well. Overall, I was not impressed.

Natalia ..

Yelp
Incredible place for Cambodian food. Try the vegetarian duck I swear! And such a great location too.

Yelp
Our regular Thai restaurant was closed so we decided to try out Cambodian food in the Laurel District of Oakland. We started with an order of Noum Creap Jean (egg rolls) which were light and crispy and stuffed with tasty vegetables. The Crunchy Green Beans with Tofu was very flavorful with a delicate sauce. We ordered a side of brown rice to stay on the healthy side. We chose the Cha Kathiw as our noodle dish and it paired nicely with the rest of our dishes. Would definitely return again to try some of the interesting looking soups and curries. The staff were attentive and gracious which made for a very pleasant meal.

Yelp
I have been getting food from Phnom Penh for over a decade. I have literally never have had a bad experience with Service, Ambiance or most importantly the food. I lean towards chicken, seafood and curry entres but all the soups are just flavorful. The owners and all the employees are so nice. I know the next shiny new restaurant will come to the neighborhood and everyone will be lining up down the street because of the buzz of that restaurant but this place is a no brainer. Best restaurant in the Laurel for sure.

Yelp
Great service, nice place and the food is delicious!! Definitely try this place. We love it. They have great vegan options also.

Yelp
Our family has been loyal patrons of this place for many years! It's a family-owned business that consistently offers fantastic service. We highly recommend trying Slaap Moarn Borg and Sachkor Ang--our all-time favorite dishes. The ambiance is beautifully artistic and tranquil, providing an excellent setting for a genuine Cambodian food experience every visit. The owner is incredibly welcoming, always making our family feel at home. We thoroughly enjoy the friendly chats and humor shared with him during our meals!

Yelp
Amazing food at a cozy hole in the wall place. Honestly its the best Southeast Asian food Ive ever had. Very sweet staff too! Get the ribs!

Yelp
The restauranteur gave me a tour of the menu, and my friend and I ordered: . noum kreap jean (111), fried pork rolls . traop ang (424), shrimp/pork/eggplant . moarn katis krahome (747), chicken yellow curry . a fish dish with pan-fried pieces I can't find on the menu now . limeade When I hit the traop ang with a lot of the chili sauce served on the table, it was quite good. The rolls were fine. The fish dish was surprisingly good, I didn't order it because I rarely like cooked fish, but it was very tasty. The chicken yellow curry wasn't as flavorful as I'd hoped, and it's also on-bone thighs, which is complicated to eat with chopsticks. The limeade was great. Enjoyable food and a great neighborhood option!

Yelp
Great food, great service. Clean establishment. The soups we ordered had just the right amount of flavoring. Fresh veggies. Love the vegetarians options and subs. They cant beat home cooking of course, but we were glad they try to keep the dishes as authentic as possible. The owner is very kind. Parking is easy. We would definitely return when we are back in town. What would have made us give 5 stars? Maybe more fermented fish paste and lemon grass as used in our cambodian dishes.

Yelp
Excellent food. Nice variety on menu to choose from. Chef specials posted, don't forget to check them out. Friendly staff.

Yelp
SERIOUSLY DA BEST! Sensatiable! Everything is FANTASTIC! The egg rolls, charbroiled beef skewers, cha mathiw noodles... even the dessert (we had deep fried bananas w/ice cream). Portions are huge, good for 2 ppl to share unless you want leftovers. Very friendly staff, passionate about their food! This is a place we will definitely return to and highly recommend to others! IT IS THAT GOOD! WOW!
google avatar

Linh Linh T.

Yelp
Food and service was great! We ordered stuffed chicken wings (slaap moarn borg), mussels, and pad thai-like noodles w/ chicken (cha kathiw). The chicken in the noodles tasted very juicy, not dry at all. The homemade chili sauce has a kick and good flavor - added it to our dishes. Everything was solid in flavor.

Yelp
I'm a regular lunch customer but also recently ordered from Phnom Penh for a large-ish dinne for about 30 people. They heloed me pick a menu for multiple food sensitivities and allergies and it was PERFECT. Every single out of town guest asked for info so they could go to the restaurant during their stay. Everything on their menu is to die for. TIP: Wear your eating pants.

Yelp
I've lived in the area for 12 years and admittedly I haven't been to Phnom Penh nearly as often as I should. It's purely my own mental block. The last time I went with my wife we were apprehensive due to parking. I'm disabled which makes walking a challenge some times. However, it was an unfounded concern. We found parking 2 doors down. Parking is really not a problem there if you are willing and able to walk up to a block or two. The food here is fantastic. It's delicious, clean, well cooked, and well presented and different than what I eat in frequent rotation. The family run vibe is apparent and filled with care. The staff treat you well and are attentive to what you have going on. They converse when that's your mood and are straight to the point when you want your attention to be purely on who you are sharing a table with. Their menu is expansive and, as I'm writing this, am committing to eating here more often to try more and more of what they have to offer. This is definitely one of those establishments that help make a neighborhood. They have been around for a long time and are good at what they do.

Kathie L.

Yelp
Phnom Penh House is hands down the best Cambodian restaurant in Oakland. We usually order takeout, and it never disappoints. My favorite dishes are the Crunchy Green Bean with Tofu, Singapore Noodles with Shrimp, Traop Ang, and the beef sticks. Each dish bursts with authentic flavors and fresh ingredients, making every meal a delightful experience. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Ruby P.

Yelp
This is my favorite place in my neighborhood. I'd actually probably drive from somewhere else to get their food because it's so delicious. And the people that run it are so sweet and kind. They always remember my name. My favorite dish is the eggplant with pork and shrimp, it's insanely delicious
google avatar

Eden P.

Yelp
I love this restaurant. It is a hidden gem! First, the staff are all so kind. The food is delicious. I've eaten here several times for lunch and dinner, and had takeout a few times as well. Everything from soup to appetizers, stir fry to curry has been delectable and cooked perfectly. Come in, you won't regret it!
google avatar

Yelp
Phnom Penh has yummy Cambodian Fusion Cuisine. Beautiful to look at and tasty. Not too hot just right tangy sauces. Excellent friendly service. I'll be back.
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing! Why haven't I ate here before? My husband, his family, and I came to eat here last night for dinner and wow, everything was so flavorful. From the papaya salad to the eggplant to the chicken and ribs - Everything was packed with all the goodness! I am looking forward to coming back here soon and try more of the menu. HIGHLY recommend!

Yelp
Their fried rice is like crack!!!! That's what we call it!!! The best tastiest food around!!!

Walt S.

Yelp
Traditional Cambodian cuisine in a welcoming neighborhood. All the dishes served to your taste.

George C.

Yelp
These guys have ribs that are better than Everett and Jones! Very meaty and the marinade used is delicious. They are very friendly and prices are great.

Lauren K.

Yelp
Really good solid Cambodian food, a great title neighborhood spot with super nice people.
google avatar

Yelp
The weird thing was looking at the chicken soup and seeing how clear it was and thinking this won't have much flavor and then sipping it and finding out how much lemongrass and how much spice was in it. We moved on to the crepe with the pork and shrimp. The egg wrap was a little dry but the inside made up for it. I asked about a beef dish and the person on the phone said that I should try the beef with spinach and peanut sauce but they were out of spinach so broccoli was used as a substitute. I can see why you use spinach in the dish, however, the broccoli brought a little more bulk to the dish so I didn't mind. Also, peanut sauce. Spicy, delicious peanut sauce. The last dish was a tofu and green beans. It was complimented with onion, red bell peppers and whatever the sauce is. I couldn't tell you what was in it since I ate it too quickly. Throw that on top of the rice and you're a happy camper.

Shirleen A.

Yelp
Been going to this place since they opened in Chinatown, I think on 9th Street. This location is better. Great Pad Thai Noodles, Angel wings and Curries. Service is friendly and fast.
google avatar

Tom B.

Yelp
What is there to say about atmosphere when a Cambodian place looks like it used to be a Mexican one. Well, they make up for it with a huge thoroughly mesmerizing photo of Ankor Wat on the wall. It is so beautiful and engaging that I was very drawn to it. First off the temperature in the restaurant was cold, very cold. That made it somewhat uncomfortable and I didn't really want to wear a coat and hat to eat a meal. Service was very good, friendly and efficient. I tried the Singapore noodles with shrimp. It was just OK, but not a lot of flavor. Everything seemed fresh but the shrimp were sparse and not very plump. I had to add a hefty amount of chili paste and soy sauce to ramp up the flavor,, and that greatly improved it. Overall the food seemed competent, but nothing stellar or noteworthy. I admit to not knowing a great deal about Cambodian cuisine although I have tried it in other places. I would come back as I think coming with a group to try multiple dishes may give a different impression.

Yelp
Excelente food, staff super nice . Would definitely go back and try more dishes . The stuff chicken wings was a standout dish

Yelp
This place has been a solid staple in the Laurel district. They are friendly and the food is really good. The place is always clean too.

Yelp
Their family restaurants (original one was in Oakland Chinatown) have been favorites for 30 years. Their food is super delicious, the service is warm and friendly, and the ambiance is cool, a friendly neighborhood place to eat. Highly recommended.

Yelp
I came here for lunch with two women friends. We were treated very well, and were not rushed to finish our meal. The food was fresh and tasty. I loved the papaya salad, which we all shared, and the entrees were delicious! Highly recommended!
