Five Vietnamese Dishes to Know and Where to Eat Them in Boston - Eater Boston

"When you order bo kho at Pho Basil (177 Massachusetts Ave., Fenway), you can choose between rice noodles or white rice. Since bo kho could be considered either a soup or a stew, choosing noodles or rice gives you options for how you’d like to experience it. And for an appetizer to accompany your bo kho, you can’t go wrong with an order of cha gio (a crispy fried roll) or goi cuon (a steamed rice roll with fillings). Pho Basil is currently offering takeout, delivery, and indoor dining." - Karen Wilber

Good quantity. Exceptional taste. It took me 5min on the waitlist to be seated at 9pm on a Saturday. The seating was small and intimate as is typical fare with most Asian restaurants. I ordered Cha Gio ($8) and Bun Bo Hue ($18). The food arrived in 10min from the time I ordered. The portion of the cha gio could be a bit bigger but for an appetizer it was fine. The Bun Bo Hue was a decent sized dish with a good amount of beef, although the spice was on the milder side compared to other places I have had in the past. For variety, their menu offered dishes such as curry and unique soft drinks. Overall a good experience and a good alternative to the competing restaurants in the Dorchester area.

Pho is a compact yet charming eatery with excellent service - the staff are remarkably attentive. We tried their Mala Pho, Tom Yum Fried Rice, and Sesame Wings, all of which were delicious. I particularly recommend their Thai Iced Tea as the perfect beverage pairing. The restaurant offers exceptional value, with generous portions at very reasonable prices. This hidden gem has certainly earned my repeat business!

Their spicy rangoon is very crispy and yummy. The main dish, tom yum fried rice is very flavorful. Yuzu soda and jasmine tea lychee are so refreshing. Best experience so far!

I love to try different dishes. To any south indian who loves spice, the hot spice here in pho basil can be bland to your buds as it was for me. Keep the expectations low and enjoy the difference. My girl loved it she gives a solid 4 but i do 3. Food is bland, great service, reservation a must, ambience would be 2. I personally will not visit this place again. Loved the pineapple in pineapple fried rice though.

Google
Pho basil has the best pho, service, and prices in the area! The staff is unbelievably kind and attentive, food is always phenomenal, and the prices are so affordable for local college students😸

Google
This place was clean and comfortable. I enjoyed their wings but their pho was a bit salty. I also noticed they give small portions for bean sprouts. We were 3 and they have us a small bowl to share.

This restaurant is an authentic dining both Thai and Vietnamese food. Today I have Spicy Rangoon, Tom yum Fried Rice, Yuzu Soda, and Jasmine Lychee. The food is clean and delicious. Moreover, the service here is really great! I definitely come back and try another dish!

Google
Small cozy place but loud; hence, 4 stars for atmosphere . Come after lunch hours on a wed and the place already full. However, easily can join the waitlist and it moves pretty fast. Service is phenomenal as the staff are very attentive. Food is great and huge portion. Highly recommend this place

Yelp
I went here twice while in Boston so that should tell you everything you need to know. This was a very cute and small Pho shop but oh so delicious. The first night we landed, we were craving pho and this place was a short walk from the hotel. The line was out of the door when we arrived but we only waited about 20 mins for a table so not too bad. I ordered the butterfly pea sparkling limenade. I liked the colors and so I decided to order it. It was good, fizzy and very lime forward. I enjoyed it. We ordered egg rolls to share. They were crispy and the filling was delicious. Ground chicken instead of pork and the homemade fish sauce dipping sauce was the perfect sweet and sour touch. I originally went in for Pho but ended up ordering the tom yum fried rice with crispy duck after I seen it at another table. That tom yum fried rice was definitely a major yum. It was slightly sweet but savory, the crispy duck was crispy and tender and they gave plenty of duck meat on top. The basil added the perfect touch to the rice as well. The rice was a 10/10. On our second trip we were going to try another pho place a couple doors down from here but they said their chef hadn't showed up yet and we had a flight to catch so we decided to go back to Pho Basil since it didn't disappoint the first time. We got the pan fried gyoza to share. I love gyoza so it literally never disappoints me. I did order pho this time as well. I went with the Pho Sate. It came with beef balls, flank steak, and rare steak. Had cherry tomatoes and all the normal pho toppings as well. It had a nice amount of spice. It had the spicy chili oil added. This Pho was Pho-nomenal. I recommend this cute shop to anyone looking for some good eats in Boston.

Yelp
Came with a friend for a 6pm dinner on a weekday and there was only a 5-minute wait. Staff was decently attentive; we were in the corner by the window so didn't get passed very often and had to flag the waitress down a few times. Restaurant itself seemed pretty clean with good lighting. My friend ordered the pho dac biet and I got the pho bo vien. I found it interesting that they don't halve the meatballs like most other places. Bowl had a good amount of noodles and the broth was not bad but not the best I've had. The Thai iced tea I ordered as a drink was pretty solid. They did seem a little antsy to get us out and give us the check despite the restaurant being only half-full when we finished eating. I would be okay coming back but don't think I'd seek it out.

Yelp
Well helloooo Pho What a wonderful local gem of a place to discover on a whim while having a craving for Pho. A warm & bright local eatery with a comfortable atmosphere and a menu with a mix of Thai & Vietnamese dishes. Needless to say, but I'm going to say it anyways... our need & craving for delicious Pho was wholeheartedly fulfilled & completely satisfied.

Yelp
We had plenty of Vietnamese food back home, and since we hear the staff and back kitchen speak Thai, we thought going with their own Thai cuisine would be the better choice instead of pho. The lunch special was so filling that we came back for a second time! The classic pad thai dish was flavorful and the pad kee mao had a pleasant roasty taste. With a cozy simple environment, this place is definitely good for small groups and quick meals.

Yelp
Pho Basil is overall alright. I think they just had an off day. The gyoza was soggy and the texture was very soft and a bit cold. The pho was pretty decent. It is very light and savory but it was a bit too sweet for me. There was not much noodles and meat in the pho. The people here were efficient and nice. The restaurant is always lively with students eating here. I had great experiences before as I occasionally eat here. I believe they just had a bad day.
google avatar

Megan H.

Yelp
I always want pho on a rainy day, so I decided to try Pho Basil since it seemed pretty popular! We waited about 15-20 min which wasn't too bad, but just be aware that there will probably be a wait. I got the pho tai and a jasmine limeade. The pho tai was decent/good with broth that was relatively flavorful and meat that wasn't too tough, though it wasn't the best I've had in boston. The jasmine limeade seemed pretty fresh, though it was quite sour. Not sure if I would go again but it's good enough if you're craving pho!

Yelp
Pho Basil is one of our favorite Vietnamese spots whether it's eating there or getting delivery - always great! Food is consistently good, fresh, tasty. We ordered on the snow day a couple days ago as I was craving a bowl of hot soup on the cold wintery day. So the delivery took a bit longer but that was to be expected. I got the Pho chay which is the vegetable pho soup and my new fave since the last few times I've had it. And it was great - very hearty with tofu lots of crunchy veggies and noodles. The best part is the broth - it is so good, it's savory and slightly sweet - it's what makes the soup absolutely delicious!! Hubs got the pho ga chicken soup and enjoyed it. In addition we also ordered the curry puffs which are like empanadas stuffed with potatoes. And the dumplings with chicken were yummy. Also ordered the Saigon noodles with chicken. Had plenty of leftovers- always awesome!! Been there in the restaurant a few times and inside was cozy too. Highly recommend!!

Yelp
Checked this place out and was very impressed! This place has been on my list for a bit, so it was nice to finally get to experience. We got there and the restaurant was full with a small line of people. We joined the waiting list and only had to wait 15 to 20 minutes before we were able to get a table. The ambience inside is nice. It's definitely packed with a lot of people when all the tables are full, but you're still spread out enough where you don't feel too cramped. Our service was also great the whole night and all of the servers were kind and welcoming when they came up to the table and even while we were waiting for our table to be prepped. The menu is very extensive with lots of options! I appreciated all of the indicators on the menu to show different dietary cues for spiciness or whether it was vegan or vegetarian. There is also a vegan section in the menu that covers all the items that are vegan as is. Definitely a good amount of options and something for everyone. I tried the veggie tofu curry. It was really good and indicated as spicy. I found that it wasn't too spicy. It was enough that you could taste the spice, but it wasn't overwhelming. I appreciated that the curry came with rice instead of being an add-on cost as it is with some places. I thought it was pretty good portions for the cost. If you're wanting to try multiple dishes, the portions are definitely good enough for sharing. I also got a Thai iced tea with espresso and was so excited to learn that they had an oat milk option so that it was vegan. It's been a long time since I've been able to have a Thai iced tea and I thought it was really good! I would definitely go back and get it again.

Yelp
Very popular. I came on a Friday night and not only was it packed but it was a 40 minute wait. Normally I would not wait but in this case it worked because I was attending an outdoor concert across the street. It is a self-check-in QR system. You can keep track of your place in line via your device. I had the dac biet pho and sesame wings. It was the first evening with a chill in the air and the soup hit the spot. Not sure it's the traditional preparation because I usually have it with a clear broth, but it was a flavor bomb. I also like how the rare beef is presented mostly rare, which allows you to cook it your prepared level of preference. The chicken wings had a nice coating of sauce. It is not battered and cold use an extra minute for crispiness but cravable. I like the accompanying greens and pickles. On the other hand, the pho could have used more. It only had basil and bean sprouts. I am amazed at the friendly and attentive staff. Like I said they were non-stop busy. I also like the diversity the staff. All Asian but different parts of Asia. I also appreciate how they stick to your place in line no matter how large or small your party.

Yelp
As solid as the viet food gets here in Boston. Def a busy place popular among students kinda packed inside. fast solid and reliable food
google avatar

Yelp
This place is pretty solid. Definitely recommend getting the pad thai, drunken noodle, and curry dishes. It is relatively cheap too I guess.

Samantha G.

Yelp
Food was super flavorful and authentic tasting and pricing (lunch special) was great for the portion. Only criticism would be the wait staff, not the friendliest, but I understand that most customers go there for a quick solo bite instead of an attentive sit down meal.

Yelp
Highly recommend this pho dish, nice noodle soup and then they have nice service. Near by University of Boston, we must try this during our staying.
google avatar

Megan Y.

Yelp
Ordered takeout thru grubhub, just one order of Saigon noodles so thought it should be pretty quick to whip up, but had to wait 30 minutes longer than the expected pickup time which was very frustrating. Tons of other people were also clearly upset about their orders taking so long. The food itself was just fine, nothing to write home about and definitely not worth waiting so long for.

Yelp
Pho Basil on Mass Ave was one of my more frequented restaurants before, mostly due to convenience as I always wanted to avoid rush hour so I'd grab dinner & take my time eating. Not a bad spot if you want Vietnamese/Thai food. I prefer it over the Viet/Thai food spots in Chinatown. The Khao Soi from here is pretty tasty. One of my go-to's. Honestly, I haven't tried any of their Vietnamese food but I enjoy their Thai menu items! Prices are reasonable & overall, a great place to go for casual lunch/dinner. Parking: Can be a bit tricky to find parking in area. Meter parking, if you're lucky.
google avatar

Monica L.

Yelp
This place was really packed on a weeknight so we decided to try it. The space was lively and clean. The service was super friendly and attentive, checking in frequently to refill water and also fast with the check! I got the wonton soup and was a bit disappointed. It felt like a lot of noodles with 4 small wontons for $20. I probably ordered wrong considering how popular the place is though!

Yelp
Great spot on the edge of Back Bay. We went for lunch midday on Sunday and were sat immediately. I ordered the Thai Iced Tea which was delicious - I would definitely recommend if you are looking for something sweet. We got the sesame wings for an app which were perfectly crispy and flavorful. The mains we got were came in huge portions. The Dac Biet pho was good, I just wish it had slightly more flavor. The Tom Yum Beef Fried Rice was also good but not outstanding. Overall I would recommend Pho Basil for a warm hearty meal.
google avatar

Yelp
Pho Basil is located across campus so it tends to get busy quick. We came here as a group of five on a Saturday at opening. We were seated immediately but the place quickly filled up. We ordered different variations of pho and everyone loved their orders. The rice noodles were thin and chewy and absorbed the tasty broth. My mala pho was not as spicy as expected but delicious nonetheless.

Yelp
A great Pho place on Mass Ave that was bustling on a Sunday evening. I ordered online about 15 minutes before and my order was just about ready when I was there for pickup. The packaging is great as they separate the broth from the noodles and meat. They also have a little baggy of bean sprouts, like, and a packet of hoisan sauce. I took everything out into a bowl to reheat and it tasted just like you would get in the restaurant. The broth is sweet and the meat is tender. This is a perfect place to warm up on a cold winter day.
google avatar

Bailey B.

Yelp
Went another time after being disappointed the first and was much more impressed. Noodles were delicious and plentiful, broth was yummy. The tripe was good. Meat was a little too fatty for me, but otherwise good. Service was better this time! It is quite crowded in there but with how big the line stayed, you can't blame them for shoving you in like sardines. Heads up if you are celiac/gluten free. This place has a whole gluten free menu (great!) but they'll ask if contamination is ok before serving you (not great). My friend is celiac and didn't seem to be glutened after, but just a heads up.
google avatar

Andrea S.

Yelp
I liked the duck noodle soup. We put our names on the Yelp waitlist beforehand. All of the seats were taken in the restaurant showing that it's a popular place. They have both Vietnamese and Thai food. I also had lychee juice and it came with four lychees which i liked.
google avatar

jade galilea b.

Yelp
The food was delicious. The service was amazing. The delivery is usually fast and very nice people. The place is a little bit small so it does tend to get crowded in busy times so I would recommend getting there before dinner time for a secure seating on time.
google avatar

Sarah C.

Yelp
After a full day of walking through the city, the best way I could end my day was by eating a comforting bowl of pho. Pho Basil has little space for seating, therefore the wait time did last for roughly 30 minutes during dinner time. And this was a wait time for a table for 1. Regardless, the food was worth it. The waitress was very nice as well as the rest of the staff. It did feel a bit weird at first because I noticed the staff and manager or owner staring at me. Then I realized I was the only black person in there, LOL. TO BE CLEAR!! There wasn't any negative sense to the stares, but more of "Is she going to like the food?" Of which, I loved it! The pho was so warm and tasty! The meat was tender and the mint, cilantro, bean sprouts toppings tasted fresh. The crab rangoons were so crispy and delicious, especially with the sauce. And the chai tea was nice and sweet. I looked back at the manager/owner in between eating and noticed he was smiling and asked was the food good? I gave a thumbs up as I had a mouth full of pho, Lol! Overall I say the experience was very relaxing and helped me ease down from being on the move all day. Highly recommend this place!
google avatar

Maya K.

Yelp
This pho was amazing. Got egg noodle instead of vermicelli. Put a bunch of hoisin and hot sauce SO GOOD. Sesame wings were yum with good flavor. Thai tea was perfect, not too sweet. Service was really good the employees are kind and food comes out rlly quick. Restaurant is clean and gets a lot more full around dinner time. I took off a star just because the side of bean sprouts and basil they gave us was very small. The bean sprouts were a bit soggy too.

Allison B.

Yelp
LOVE CHICKEN PAD THAI. Portions are huge- can be shared by 2 ppl sometimes and even have some left over. The wait can be kinda long if you go sit and eat.
google avatar

Ngan N.

Yelp
We came around 11:50 AM (20 minutes after they open) and the restaurant was already almost full. Apparently it's quite popular and there's usually a line. You can get in line ONLINE too. That can save you some time waiting in the cold. Service is excellent. Clean, well organized and everything was pretty quick. We ordered: - Drunken noodles with fried chicken: it's pretty good 5/5. Has great flavor, noodles were cooked perfectly. Generous portion and a good amount of veggies. Definitely worth it to add scripy fried chicken. - Bun bo Hue: 3/5 it's not bad but it's not quite the standard Bun bo Hue, and not so flavorful. Some of the meat was tender but most wasn't. I had to chew quite a bit. I wouldn't order this again.

Rutvi S.

Yelp
SO good! Definitely join the waitlist, got our table right on time! Fried rice was incredible.
google avatar

Tony T.

Yelp
This was my favorite Pho place back when I was living in Boston about a decade ago. I recently went back for dinner on a Friday and I forgot how packed it can get given that it's a pretty small place inside. I usually always order the Pho Tai, but I don't remember (or perhaps) forgot that they also have Thai food. This time I got the Koi Sao with Crispy Chicken which was really good!
google avatar

Gaby H.

Yelp
After our drive into the city all we were craving was a bowl of pho. We found this gem close to our Airbnb and immediately headed straight there. My boyfriend ordered the Pho Sate and I ordered the Bun Bo Hue. They were both fantastic and just what we needed after a long drive. Service was quick and attentive. The establishment is not very large so I would recommend coming for a late lunch or early dinner as I am sure they get packed!

Yelp
After leaving BSO with a friend, we decided to get a bite to eat, and decided upon Pho Basil. It was a little bit of a pain because you had to be added to the waiting list via a scan on your phone. I would much rather be able to walk inside and put my name on a list rather than having to stand outside in the cold and try to scan askew so I can get on a waiting list. Anyways, my friend was very interested in eating here so we put ourselves on the list. Once inside, it was extremely tight we were against the wall at a two seater with about 10 inches between the tables where people had a squished through, including the servers. I understand about optimizing your space but maybe they should think about a different seating arrangement as it was extremely uncomfortable as I'm a 275 pound guy my left arm was pressed against the wall the entire meal. And I kept getting touched by the service as they were bringing over food to our table and two other tables. The food came out all at once rather than the appetizers, and then the mains, which is not really a bad thing as I like a full table but unfortunately, all of these plates and bowls did not fit on the table and it was just so crowded that it impeded my happiness of eating anything. Now that I vented about my seating experience, I would like to say that the staff was very friendly and helpful, as well as knowledgeable and very polite . So now onto the orders for appetizers, we ordered the fried Gyoza I believe there were eight Gyoza on the plate with a small piece of iceberg lettuce, and some pickled radish carrot on top. The Gyoza was cooked correctly with a small amount of stuffing not really anything special. I would rate it as 2 stars, dish was priced at $8.50. We also ordered the wings. I forget how many were, maybe six or eight. They were supposed to be cooked with a special Thai herb. However, I did not taste any type of spicing. However, they were delicious, fried perfectly, and extremely tasty. They also came with the same little piece of iceberg lettuce and pickled radish carrots on the side with a little bit of dipping sauce. Wings are at 5 stars. Price $8.95, possibly the best value on the menu. For a couple of the mains we ordered Pad See You, which is basically a stirfried noodle with some broccoli, carrot, Chinese broccoli, egg and some beef. This dish was the best thing on the table. I would give this a 4 star rating as there was very little beef. Price $16.96. And lastly, we ordered the Dac Biet, which is Pho. The bowl was the size of the medium at most pho restaurants , however,Ph Basil only had one size. The Dac Biet comes with rare steak, well-done flank, tendon and tripe. We ordered ours without the tripe. I did ask the waitress if there was a good amount of meat or if I could possibly order extra meat, she said there was a lot of meat. I'd say it was on the lite side and would've liked and appreciated if I could have ordered extra meat. I would've had no problem paying extra for it as I do it most places. Unfortunately it was not even an option. All in all the Pho was pretty average as you'd find well outside the city. The broth was a tad on the salty side. I would put it in the middle maybe a 2 1/2 stars for the Pho. No, as everyone knows on mass Avenue basically there's no parking if you're lucky enough to get a meter the parking guards I'll looking down on you. I did not happen to view the restrooms, so I cannot state the cleanliness as I cannot for the kitchen. If you are downtown, it's a very pleasant place to go as long as it's not cold outside as they make you wait outside not in the restaurant.
google avatar

Yelp
You know it's good when there's almost always a line out the door! I've tried takeout from Pho Basil a few times, but this was my first dine-in experience. Since we were a small group and visited for an early dinner, we were seated immediately. We ordered some crab rangoons to start, which were tasty but nothing too special. The real star of the show was the saigon noodle dish, which I ordered with crispy chicken. The noodles, sauce, and veggies all paired together perfectly, and everything was elevated so much further with some delicious crispy chicken on top. By the end of the meal, we left feeling completely stuffed. Overall, everything I've tried here has been great, but the noodle dishes are the real highlight.

Yelp
I've been to follow basil before a few times and never realize how good the food really was. We stopped in last night randomly on the way home and had a really great experience. The service was very quick. We walked in and were immediately seated. I appreciate that the menu has a QR code on the table so you don't have to wait for anyone to bring you menus. Additionally, after taking our orders on their portable machines, they quickly printed out the receipt and put it in a container at the end of the table, which we appreciated. It just expedites eating your food getting in and getting out. We ordered the Jasmine limeade and the sparkling limeade. Both were tasty. However, if you don't like citrusy or sour drinks, do not get the sparkling limeade. I personally love those taste so I enjoyed it. My fiancé enjoyed the Jasmine was a little bit more sweeter side. Appetizers spicy rangoon and the roti n curry dip. This is my second time having these dishes and they were even better last night! The spicy rangoon was not too spicy, and is packed with crab meat. The crisp of the rangoon was very light and not oily. The roti for the curry dip also resembled this lightness and flakiness. The curry dip was a sweet and savory blend that has a hint of spice and is so tasty. The appetizers were a good portion to share and we weren't full from eating them. For entrées, I got the Tom Yum fried rice with shrimp and my partner got the spicy eggplant. Both dishes were spicy like we like them and well seasoned. He asked for brown rice with his meal and said it was cooked well. My fried rice included basil, pepper, egg, and medium sized shrimp. His spicy eggplant included, eggplant, peppers, onion, tofu, mushroom in a light brown spicy sauce. Both dishes were very good. My fiancé did say the spicy eggplant was very spicy and that says a lot for him because he loves spicy food. I would definitely recommend this bustling place for folks just walking by or looking for some really good Asian food!

Yelp
I ordered takeout from Grubhub for pickup, and this was actually my second time getting food from here. Both times I got Pho Dac Biet. However, the portions were noticeably smaller this time. The rare steak was cooked like I requested, so that's a plus. The staff there who I interacted with were nice. The restaurant was busy both times I've been there. The only criticism I have with this place was the change in portion size.
google avatar

Kristine Z.

Yelp
Huge portions and solid flavors! The wait can definitely take a bit on weekends for dinner though. I highly recommend the drunken noodles, pho sate (spicy) and khao soi (coconut curry soup with crispy and soft noodles, fried chicken, and pickled veggies). Generally tons of college students and families, the vibe is very lively and loud.
google avatar

Gloria W.

Yelp
Don't have a photo since i got takeout, but this was so so good. My friends and I ordered the dac biet, and the soup was still steaming hot and the portions were fair for the price. Would definitely recommend. However, I can't speak on the service or ambiance.
google avatar

Caroline S.

Yelp
Delicious and great value! I highly recommend coming by for their lunch menu. Prices are affordable, portions are large, and food is tasty! I wouldn't say Pho Basil is your best option for Thai/Vietnamese in Boston, but they are definitely a convenient and college friendly option for those in the area, while having good tasting food.

Yelp
2nd night of my business trip. I again opted for a familiar and reliable cuisine. I'm generally of the opinion that any Thai food is good Thai food. I ordered the drunken noodles w beef, chicken wings and Thai tea. This was a mobile order but the delivery was only half a mile.T First thing I noticed was that there were no utensils given(even though I specifically asked for it). Great, how am I supposed to eat the noodles? Luckily my hotel gave me some so it wasn't a big deal. Wings-full disclaimer, fried chicken wings are my fav food. I will eat day old grocery store fried chicken because my standards are out the window when it comes to fried chicken. Now I understand that this was a mobile order but the wings came pretty dead. The wings themselves don't have much flavor but the sauce adds some sweetness. The texture of the wings... well I was well familiar with it eating grocery store wings. No juiciness, soggy sides and just overall poor flavor. I would've thought these were from a forgotten hot bar from the texture. Maybe these wings would have been better in store? But I think modern tech has solved wing transportation(vent holes) so I would expect better nowadays. Maybe I'm just spoiled by Korean fried chicken. Drunken noodles-a dish that I think is very difficult to get wrong. I chose the beef(upcharge) option and was very disappointed. The beef came with 3 large pieces that I initially thought were just not cut up. Once I bit into it, it was obvious the big pieces were mainly just gristle. Tough, rubbery cuts that I would typically throw away. Fortunately there weren't many beef pieces as the dish tasted better without them. The flavors of the noodles themself were still good, although I wish they had a wokhei flavor that usually elevates the dish. Thai tea-opted for no ice(upcharge). I'm not sure if you actually get more this way since the cup doesn't come filled up. It did come in a bag in the mobile order though so that was considerate in case of spills. The flavor itself was fine. A bit surprisingly, I wished it was a tad bit sweeter. Typically I find Thai tea too sweet so that was unexpected. Overall, Thai food is a great cuisine. I was pretty sad writing this review bc I really love Thai food. I think the fact that the flavor profile is Thai really boosted the rating for this review. But maybe not all Thai food is good Thai food.

Yelp
I went here with a couple of people. We started out with Gyoza dumplings and Sesame chicken wings. Our entrees were Crispy duck Pad Thai, chicken Pad Thai and the chicken Pho Gat. Everything was excellent, clean fresh and tasted great. The staff were very friendly and helpful. It is far from a fancy place, but I'd rather have good food than linen on my table. Hope to go back soon.

Yelp
I wanted to know what was the "best" pho in Boston and Yelp turned me to Pho Basil. The place is small, expect maybe a short wait. There is a waitlist you can scan to enter. Wait wasn't so bad like 10-15 min for me and that was on a Wednesday night. I just looked at the menu during the wait time. Staff wasn't that bad. Ordering was easy they do it electronically and give you the check right after ordering in a little slot on the side of the table. Cute packing for take away I got the Thai iced tea, pho dac biet, and crispy chicken basil home special with white rice. Pretty cheap eats and huge portions! Total was less than $40 after taxes (no tip included yet). Thai iced tea was normal. The pho that everyone raves about wasn't the BEST to me but it was good in its own way. Really sweet tasting broth. The table doesn't provide anything but hoison but I wouldn't recommend adding hoison sauce unless you want your broth even more sweet! In my opinion this place probably better for the Thai based foods over the Vietnamese based foods. Even though the name is Pho Basil it seems like the Thai style crispy chicken stir fry was better than the pho! I should have gotten one of the fried rices or drunken noodles with crispy chicken. My one friend likes the curry here over the pho too so it's telling maybe try not just the pho here.

Yelp
One of our favorite Thai/Vietnamese food places in Boston. Their curries and noodles are always tasty! This time we tried the Spciy tofu eggplant curry and spring rolls. They also have really good Thai iced tea and Vietnamese iced coffee. The service is fast and ambiance is nice!

Yelp
The place is small but clean and bright. Service was good. One of the best pho I've had. Tasty broth. Good selection. Would definitely return and recommend.

Yelp
I was surprised at how much I liked Pho Basil. Apparently it's a really popular local spot and there is a line outside before it opens. I got there 20 minutes after they opened on a Friday. It was about 90% full but luckily we got a table without having to wait. The restaurant is on the smaller side but they had a good amount of waiters and the service was excellent. Despite being busy the food also came out really fast. I ordered the drunken noodle based on the waitresses recommendation. I added the crispy chicken based off the yelp reviews I red. I LOVED my dish it was very flavorful, packed with veggies and the added crispy chicken was an amazing addition. The portions were quite large and the price is very reasonable. I now understand why they have are so popular. I would 100% come back here again.

Yelp
This is a very well loved spot among college students in the area, with Berkeley and Northeastern students always waiting outside (even in really cold weather!) to get a table. I really think that Pho Basil would benefit from expanding their seating space or taking reservations (or both!). Especially during peak hours like during dinner, expect to wait 15 minutes or more and there is no indoor waiting area. I have ordered their Dac Biet (the basic pho dish) both times I've been, and it doesn't disappoint. The flavors are great and the meat is tender. I've had many Pho dishes before and this one doesn't stand out among the best, but is a solid option for a reasonable price. I haven't ordered the Pad Thai, Pad See You, or Thai Tea before, but other members of my party had only positive things to say about their dishes.

Yelp
Super good pho place with really good service. My pho dac biet was 13.95 and the serving size was really big. The appetizer roti n curry dip is also delicious (but not that much for the price). Came in a party of 5 for dinner after work, had to wait a while to be seated but once inside the waitresses were very kind, attentive, and speedy.

Yelp
This is a good place to catch up with a friend or a casual first date. The food was pretty good and you get what you expect for a reasonable price. The service was fast and nice. All around, a good place to go if you're craving Thai food

Yelp
Cozy restaurant serving great Thai and Vietnamese food! We stopped by on a week day for lunch and it was sooo crowded - luckily we only had to wait a few minutes for a table to open up. We were seated and placed our orders soon after. The food came out very quickly and was fantastic! I ordered the Tom yum noodle soup - so flavorful, spicy, and hearty. My friend ordered the pho, which she enjoyed as well. The servers are very efficient and quick. During busy hours, you'll be asked to wrap things up once you're finished eating, so this might not be the best place to have a leisurely meal and catch up with friends.

Yelp
Cozy little space with a good selection of food. Was surprised to see Thai food here as well, but we were here for the pho only. My boyfriend got the dac biet and I got the bun bo hue. I tasted the soups first and I was very pleased with how good both soups were, but the dac biet had one of my favorite pho soup bases ever. The bun bo hue was nothing too special, but I appreciated how much meat and toppings they gave. It was definitely very filling and at a good price point, I highly recommend it, especially in this Boston winter!

Yelp
The pho was just meh. The pineapple fried rice was good. Service was good. Location was good. Seemed a little pricey.
