we met up with another couple for dinner at a restaurant that someone had recommended. i called to make a reservation for 6:30 pm, but they called back to inform me they close at 7:00 pm. we adjusted our plans, and after checking with everyone, we agreed to meet at 6:00 pm as suggested.
the restaurant is located in a strip mall, unit 110, 4909 17th ave se. curious, i asked our server whether their cuisine is from the north or south. she didn't know and went to find out, but came back to tell us the person she asked wasn't sure either.
we ordered the beef carpaccio with rare ribeye, quail egg, herbs, onions, crispy shallots, and spicy lime-chili vinaigrette, which was the standout dish of the evening. we also tried spring rolls and chicken wings, which were just average; the wings were dry and seemed refried.
my partner ordered the lemongrass chicken with a sunny-side-up egg, served in a way we hadn't seen before--cut into pieces. i had the oxtail pho, where the broth was flavourful, but the oxtail itself was tough and hard to eat. pho dau bo offers beer, and options for fruit shakes, and i had the grass jelly with shaved ice and coconut milk. there are many vietnamese restaurants in calgary, some even in the same strip mall, so we may explore other options in the future.
