Thanksgiving 2021 Meal Kit: Skip Turkey, Try Taiwanese Short-Ribs | Eater SF

"Run by chef Chris Yang and his wife Marcelle, Hén-zhì is an itinerant Taiwanese pop-up offering a Thanksgiving meal kit that intentionally skips turkey in favor of boldly flavored, homey dishes: the centerpiece is a pound of braised bone-in short ribs steeped for a day and a half in brown sugar, soy sauce, and mirin—loosely inspired by Yang’s grandmother’s Three Cup Chicken—then seared on a grill and braised for about four hours to develop a sticky, sweet-savory finish. The kit also includes about a half rack of brown sugar–smoked pork ribs (basically chashu), a market salad with roasted sweet potatoes and yuzu vinaigrette, smoked local squash brushed in chile oil and smoked over kiawe, steamed short-grain rice with furikake, and butter mochi made with candied yams and coconut cream; everything is pre-cooked (just heat in the oven), the kit feeds at least two (some said it stretched to four), costs $120, and can be picked up in Lafayette or delivered on Wednesday, November 24, with orders open on the Hén-zhì website until Saturday, November 20 or until sold out." - Lauren Saria

Pho Hoa + Jazen Tea (Lafayette)

Google
They say you should listen to reviews. Well I didn’t and decided to try this place since I just moved to the neighborhood. I wanted to prove the reviews wrong. Don’t Eat Here I ordered the Grilled Beef Short Ribs Vermicelli Bowl. It was absolutely one of the worst dish I have ever eaten in Lafayette. No taste and very bland. Very little noodles and he threw the vegetables you find served with Pho. I ordered ToGo and The portion they gave me was basically what you would think they would serve a child for a kids meal. This was my first time here and my last. The guy that owns this restaurant needs to shut it down for good. He has no idea how to win customers over. On top of all that. He has a charge for the ToGo packaging. He also charges a Service Charge on top of that. Do Not Support This Business

Bryan is a lovely host and waiter! Bryan is very lively and is very helpful on what is the best options! Come to Pho Hoa and try the #51 and ask for it spicy and add shrimp if you love seafood! The bomb.com!

Kathy Ha H.

Google
I love this place, tastes very delicious! The portion is perfect! I love the veggies pho and bun cha giờ is so good and their sauce is amazing! This is a perfect place to bring your family enjoy the pho noodle soup !

Korrie B.

Google
Let me tell yall…Bryan is ALL that. I walked in and he talked to me like we went to school together. I felt so welcomed. He recommended the tutti-frutti drink and the number 51…chef’s kiss, baby. BUSSIN. I’ll be back😘 Probably tomorrow 🤣 The patio plants are thriving too.

Lisa T.

Google
I’m Vietnamese and approve of the pho 1000%! The spring rolls and tofu rolls were super yummy too. And you get to pick from a huge variety of teas! The service folks were super nice :-) The new camellia location is super cute, 10/10 recommend sitting on the patio and looking at the beautiful plants!

Google
I love pho hoa their food is excellent. I love beef rib pho and steak and meatball pho. If you want quality food this is your spot and so inexpensive. My daughter of 10 months recommends this place!!!

Rhylie E.

Google
Delicious food! I got the seared garlic steak and it was the best pho ever! Bryan was our server and he was amazing! He recommended the pho it was spectacular!

Lola L.

Google
Awesome service Love the atmosphere Bryan was nice and courteous The food was great!

Madison B.

Yelp
So beyond good!! Went for the first time today and the man suggested the spicy garlic beef. They must've just added it to the menu because it's not online. But the name of it was something along the lines of that, but it was the best pho I have ever had!!
google avatar

Sona M.

Yelp
Just door dashed some pho and spring rolls! It was really good! I'll be ordering again! And they had vegan broth. Most places only have beef. I was happy . Ty !

Peggy L.

Yelp
Visited in laws and headed back home and craved Asian Food. Service was amazing considering one person running 6-7 tables around 2pm on a Friday. Food was just enough. Avocado smoothie and jasmine boba was refreshing! Thank you Kevin! There is a 3% service fee. Maybe part of the franchise fee.‍
google avatar

Sheniqua W.

Yelp
We love coming here. The atmosphere is great. The pho is so good! The teas and smoothies are delish! Service is great! Definitely recommend!

Yelp
Listen the best Pho I've had since I was in VA years ago! I ordered the RG #15 & an order of Fried Roll. I appreciate the fact that the broth was separate from the noodles & meat. The broth is delicious! The give you the condiments on the side without having to ask for it, super plus!! The fried rolls were delicious, you get two rolls in one order. I am extremely satisfied, the portion was not too small either. $17 & worth every penny! (Very average price for pho) Will definitely be back & highly recommend

Faithy F.

Yelp
The boba teas are excellent. Thai coconut tea has a strong coconut flavour and is authentic. The fruit teas are refreshing. I also got the grilled chicken and fried roll plate; The chicken was so juicy and flavourful, but was large slabs and not cut up so I had to do some work to make bite sizes. For the price I do wish I got some more meat as well. The roll was really nice to eat with a bit of chicken and rice in the same bite. Still would get this again!

Yelp
Legit Viet! Stopped in for a quick Bahn Mi. Grilled pork goodness. Nice size portion. Veggies and jalapeno were fresh and crispy. Baguette crunchy and soft. Finished of with an original tea and a Vietnamese coffee. Good food. Good price.

Yelp
Here in beautiful Southern Louisiana even in September it is insanely hot. The heat index yesterday was a vulgar and oppressive 105. You know it's bad when you walk out of your house at 7:30 a.m. and feel like you are walking through a very thick warm and wet blanket. You want to know how hot and uncomfortable summer here in Tropicana...err Louisiana is? Take a very hot shower. Get out but don't dry off. Put all of your clothes back on. Yeah, so pho was out of the question. I wanted something cold and refreshing and preferably fruity. Jazen Tea fit those requirements nicely. I ordered a black tea with strawberry, mango, and pineapple fruit bits. It was delicious! Light but filling thanks to the fruit bits and it hit the spot! I'll be back to try more of their delicious teas and when this heat decides to go away for the one week of cool-ish weather we get will be trying the pho here.

Yelp
Love this place! Food is so good! No other words necessary and this is too much trouble.
google avatar

Derrin T.

Yelp
Love this place. Not a big menu but everything is good. Bahn mi is best I've had in lafayette. Vermicelli is top notch. Coconut jasmine tea is soooo good.

William P.

Yelp
Food was good. I thought the portions were a bit on the small side for what we paid. I did not like, and do not like, a "gratuity" (15%) tacked onto the bill.
google avatar

Nick M.

Yelp
Wow, what a surprise. This was a last minute choice to do Pho on a cold day. Went in for a late lunch and was greeted by a very friendly staff. I had the Brisket Pho, and my son had the grilled salmon plate. We each had a summer roll. It was honestly some of the best Pho I have ever had. The broth was very flavorful and rich with a deep brown color. My son was very pleased with his grilled salmon plate. Prices are fair, food is great, and staff is very friendly. What more could you ask for. I will definitely be back!
google avatar

Tallya R.

Yelp
Workers weren't friendly and the drinks weren't the best either not for the price we paid. However, the establishment of was clean.
google avatar

Kylee F.

Yelp
Tucked away off of ambassador - cute spot! I had the chicken pho and summer roll - hit the spot - will be back for sure

Yelp
My wife and I went hear because we saw they had a grand opening special. The restaurant was packed!! Being that it was so busy, the service was a little slow, but I can't hold that against them. Our server was very friendly and helpful. I tried the #15 pho and it had really good flavor. It was a little light on the meat, but overall it was good. My wife tried the chicken pho and again, the flavor was really good! They were out of white meat so they came and asked us if it was ok to replace with dark meat. You could tell they had been busy all day as they were running out of quite a few things. Our milk tea boba drinks were very good. I tried the coconut Thai and my wife had the original Thai. They both had nice tea flavor and not too much boba. Overall we were satisfied with our meal and will definitely be back as they had a lot on the menu that looked like it would be good.
google avatar

Whitney O.

Yelp
I've tried a few of the teas and smoothies and I'm not a fan BUT I absolutely LOVE the pho. My personal favorite is the beef rib and brisket. Highly recommend this place. It's always clean, the staff is very friendly and service is fast.

Donavine M.

Yelp
Food was jus ok portions are small as well they charge gratuity no matter wat so beware would not recommend

Yelp
Surprisingly great pho and sandwiches. I say surprising because chain restaurants are hit or miss. The vegetables were super fresh and the restaurant very clean. Also, the tea station is within the restaurants. The waitress was busy but attentive. We were traveling and this place was a pleasant experience.

Yelp
Soft opening review :) will update after the grand opening Food was alright. Staff seem inexperienced but I have faith they will get better with time. Interior is cute. It's bright and modern looking. Pho (number 15): 7/10 tasted like pho. Nothing really special about it. Pork chop rice plate. 6/10. Pork chop was bland on some parts and well seasoned on others. The fish sauce tasted like water. However the fried egg was great :). The pork chop was a little pink near the bone. Hopefully they will fix that before the grand opening. Taro milk tea: 5/10. You can taste the powder badly and artificial taste. Some of it didn't dissolve and just stank to the bottom. I asked for Tapioca balls but the waiter didn't hear me when I said it :(

Dung N.

Yelp
I am from Florida. Had pho, it was very good. The flavor was good. The place was super clean and modern. The owner/manager was super cool and veraccommodating. If you want Pho, give this a try.
google avatar

Gerald H.

Yelp
Still in soft opening mode, our waitress was great very attentive, rest of staff questionable, as some of the comments should not be where customers can hear them, Food was just ok, The sandwich had great flavor though. The Tea was very good, and good for a hot day like today, just don't let the ice melt as this will water down the drink, The fruit bits in the drink makes this work.

Anna B.

Yelp
Pho rice noodle were hard! Portion was not good. My taro shake that I always order was so nasty. The grilled pork was the icing on the cake as it had no flavor and dipping sauce wasn't good. Portion of rice was bad. I would not recommend taking out as it seems like they don't care much about it. Also. SINCE when do y'all take customers money without their consent? When ask about gratitude I put NO. That's called stealing! Obviously I caught it after the fact.

LeAnna D.

Yelp
It's standard chain type restaurant place. Nothing spectacular except the tea. It was really good! Not bad, service was good. There are better places in town though that are more authentic.
google avatar

Yelp
I came for the bubble tea and I definitely will be back to try more flavors. First off their large cups were actually a decent size compared to competitors and I was greeted immediately. It was the cashier and another lady in there (I'm guessing the cashier for the Pho Hoa restaurant side), they were cheerful and hospitable. It was very clean, modern, and spacious I would love to return on a date to eat some of the pho. I tried the tutti fruiti drink because the cashier said it was very popular and I discovered why. Lychee fruit anything is oh my gawd if you've never had anything with lychee in it but If you're not a die hard tea lover, this is a safe choice because it's very fruity, more like a juice punch.

Yelp
I ordered from this restaurant via DoorDash. Here is my experience: I bought the steak and meatball pho with a honey delight tea. I have ordered via a food delivery app from every single soup offering restaurant in town. Many of these deliveries consisted of pho. It is an incredibly awkward dish to package and sell an experience. Some of these deliveries had spilled soup (not at the fault of the driver). This specific restaurant did a very good job at paying attention to how they wrap and package the soup. They include the noodles, meat, cilantro, and onion in a covered black microwaveable bowl. Some might prefer the ingredients separate but I prefer this. So, if you order to-go you will need to request these items to be put on the side. There is a separate small baggie with vegetable addins and 2 small containers of sriracha and hoisin sauce. The pleasant experience I had while opening my to-go meal had a decent impact on on my overall score. The pho itself was nice. The broth was similar color to most other pho places in town. I feel as though it was a bit fattier than most places however. The seasoning is authentic but not as strong in the seasoning as other places. It is mild in comparison to other places but it is still balanced and pleasant. Because of this I would say it is a good gateway pho broth. The portion of meat to noodles was also balanced. I was a bit concerned as they only have one size of bowl but it was plenty. The tea was the main item I knew I would love or hate. I love tea, especially Jasmine. Thankfully I was not disappointed. It was brewed strong and the Jasmine flavor was upfront. The mix of aloe and honey was soothing and added a good amount of sweetness without being too sweet. The cup is large and they dont overfill it with ice. I can easily give this place a 4 star based in my to-go experience. If I ever dine in then I will update my review accordingly.

Yelp
Great food and always fresh. The owner came out to greet us and ensure the food quality was good. Nice, open and clean. Try the tea drinks! Would have shared photos of the food, but none left on the plate.

Niki N.

Yelp
My family and I went during their soft opening. Our waitress was nice, but the rest of the staff was not. They seemed like they did not enjoy their job and had mean faces the entire time we were there. They were not welcoming. I understand that this is only their soft opening, but they still need to work on A LOT of things. For instance, service was terrible and the waitress got our drink order from Jazen Tea wrong three times. The tea was not good either. The ice they use are small bits, so it melts and dilutes the drink very fast. The only good thing about the drink is that they are pretty big, but it's just watered down and you cannot taste the tea flavor at all. It also took a while for our food to come out. All of us tried their pho and it was okay. The pho wasn't as aromatic and flavorful as I was expecting compared to other "authentic" pho places, but I guess it was edible.

Michelle A.

Yelp
This place is not worth the money you will spend. I ordered the steak pho and a spring roll. I usually get my pho from another establishment in Lafayette but today It was raining and I didn't want to travel that far so I tried this place. Not only was it not good but its more expensive than the place that has more authentic and homemade pho. This pho taste like it was an instant commercialized version. I asked the cashier what cut of steak they use and she didn't know so she went in the back and asked and STILL didn't know! I took my order to go and felt ripped off because it was so bad that I didn't finish it. I threw most of it away! If you like homemade authentic tasting pho then this is NOT the place to go!
google avatar

Vivian T.

Yelp
-Great atmosphere -Lovely server and friendly owner -Good and authentic food -Tasty boba
google avatar

Kelly L.

Yelp
Really impressed with our drinks ! The price is good and the regular size is like a large size in other places .
google avatar

Taylor C.

Yelp
I would not recommend this place. If your restaurant has pho in the name, that pho better be at least decent. Had the pho and it was not good. Broth is dark and did not have that clean beef bone flavor. Service was equally horrible - so slow and got orders wrong. I hate going to any establishment where I can hear the employees talk and complain. Anyhoo, this was my first and last time. Will not be giving them a second chance.
google avatar

Jessica L.

Yelp
We visited when they are soft opening. We ordered two pho and one original Thai tea with boba. The pho noodles tasted okay but the vegetable plate is very poor. And it seemed they did not drain the water before they send the vegetable plate to us. The mung bean sprouts had lots of water in the bottom of the dish. Except, pho noodle, soup flavor and the drink is good though. It maybe because of the soft opening so the service did not train well yet. We will give it another try while they are grand opening.

Yelp
First impressions mean the world to me. The first thing i noticed was the elegant decor that surrounded the restaurant. Our waitress Destiny took care of us right away. She sat us down and explained the menu very well. We decided to complement our meals with their special fruit teas. The teas hit the back of our throats with a nice minty, refreshing sensation. The food came out extremely fast. The plates came full of food and color. It was an amazing experience!!! 5/5

Kevin B.

Yelp
Definitely would come back!! The owner came out to greet us and recommended some great drinks. They were so refreshing and you can adjust the sweetness as you like! The popcorn chicken was hot and crispy and banh mi was juicy with fresh pickled vegetables. Would recommend to anyone!!

Ann Clare T.

Yelp
I'll start with the good- I LOVE their pho and this fruity slush drink that I get. Seriously. I'm obsessed with their food and drinks. but the one thing that stops me from going is their staff. i literally get anxiety when I go because they are just so rude. even for pick up- i was checking out and the lady ringing me up was talking on her cell phone the entire time. no thank you. didn't even tell me what my total was. just pointed to the receipt on the bag. another time i had spilled my glass of water and felt so bad! but no one noticed ... even though we were the ONLY people in the restaurant. so i start cleaning it all up - on my hands and knees on the floor and everything (not that i mind considering i made the mess, but it was weird). As I finally finish and sit back down with wet napkins everywhere the waitress comes up and is like "oh you spilled" and i explained that it was fine and i got it all for the most part and then she demanded that my friend and i move tables.. so we did and then she brings me a new water and says "okay try not to spill this time" and not in a joking manner thanks for the advice they make me feel like suchhhh an inconvenience even when refilling my water. they do the bare minimum requirements as a server anyways i hate going there but the food is dang good it's sometimes worth going through the miserable experience and just zone out into the beautiful savory bowl of pho

Eric G.

Yelp
The steak and brisket pho is phenomenal. I ordered some on Waitr and got $5 off using code Local5!

Safaa A.

Yelp
I love getting pho here and bubble tea at the same time - the bubble teas come in large-sized cups and I love the fruit slushee options. I took one of my friends here and they ordered the ribs (?) and they were pretty good too, but I've been coming here for a while and never saw them lol The service here is decent and the drinks are in a delicious size, but the food quality could be better. Otherwise, I love getting pho here when I'm in the area but it's not my top pho spot, so 4 stars.
google avatar

Kristen L.

Yelp
Went here for the first time after being really interested for a while... the boba drink I received was pretty good, but the cashier was really no help for any of my questions and wasn't really the kindest. Sad but I probably won't be back

Thao N.

Yelp
Walked in and was greeted with an unauthentic enthusiasm from staff that was quite displeasing especially from the take out staff. Grilled Chicken vermicelli was bland with the chicken that tasted like it was run over and left on the street for days- dry and hard. Vermicelli noodles were crunchy-not a good thing. Pickled vegetables- more like just regular vegetables. Nothing pickled about them. Fish sauce. Watered down. But, had a spicy aftertaste. That's it. No flavor. No sweetness. Just spicy. Amateur.
google avatar

Tri H.

Yelp
Soft openning- came here a four times already with my gf for their milk teas and smoothies. Always had an issue with my order it was never correct or pleasing. Do not order anything with the coconut milk add on it seems to give me a headache (taste like canned thick coconutmilk). Other then that one order was missing boba, Ordered a fruit tea once it was 75% ice, order with no ice came with ice... Orders came out good about 50%. Had them remake an order and it was still missing something so i just took it and left. Its fustrating.

Hien T.

Yelp
First two time I came my combination pho wasn't so great, but this time it was good. I just wish it had more meat. I decided to try the hot and sour seafood pho soup my spouse ordered. It was pleasantly delicious. It had a lot of seafood in that soup. I think I like that better. Thank God servers are so much better now.

Anthony T.

Yelp
The place is nice but the food... helll no its garbage Like im so disappointed in the pho. The broth is basically water. They are not ready to open at all also the waiter there rushed us like literally gave us our ticket 10 mins in of receiving food

Alisha T.

Yelp
Best Pho in Lafayette. I always get chicken Pho, and the chicken is usually dry or chewy at most places. Not here! It is perfect. Their teas are also delicious. You can come just pick up a tea, or get one with your Pho. Won't disappoint.

Barry C.

Yelp
Lots of room for social distancing, professional, a great place for a first time experience of Vietnamese food.

Davis T.

Yelp
Pho has too much aromatic in it that it overwhelms everything. That's all you're tasting. Strawberry milk tea was alright, but strawberry taste was barely there. Would not recommend unless a change in recipe.

Rebecca O.

Yelp
Fresh delicious pho served with all the fixings. Clean restaurant and friendly staff.

Laura M.

Yelp
We have given this restaurant three chances now and going back and trying to give them our business cause we went once in the Pho was good. On another occasion we went and they were closing their doors a half hour early without any notice, we were at the door and they told us they were closed and sorry we can't serve you and all we wanted was a bubble tea. Last night we want it for again and we're going to do take out at 8:30 PM did a online order through Yelp they excepted the orders are they processing the order and that our order was going be ready and my honey drove all the way over there and they were closed and no one was there. The Lafayette community is very loyal to restaurants that take care of them and have great food and customer service and consistency. This being a new restaurant your restaurant will find out quickly that Lafayette will drop you like a rock trying to swim! Not acceptable and unprofessional, change your hours if you don't have enough business to stay open that late.

Suzi W.

Yelp
Great food from the appetizers to the entrees, to the smoothies. Great flavors, ample generous servings, staff very knowledgeable and accommodating. Avocado rolls were amazing and the lemon-grass pork chops were so good. Fresh ingredients and amazing selection of fruit filled teas and smoothies. You will not be disappointed to try the food. The decor is modern and clean. Can't say enough good things about this place. Welcome to Lafayette!!!!!!!!!

Paige L.

Yelp
Everytime I have ordered food here it has been good. I personally don't like pho, it's a very acquired taste and so is this kind of food so don't expect to like everything you order. The tea is amazing. I love boba and all the flavors. If you haven't had this kind of tea before I highly recommend that you try it out. It's so good. Vietnamese coffee is amazing. There's a reason it's called Vietnamese coffee and not just coffee. It's different from regular coffee as it has condensed milk which is amazing so don't get mad when you don't get "regular coffee". I'm glad they brought a place like this to Lafayette and I hope it stays, especially for the tea.
