"This Vietnamese restaurant is a Chinatown staple. Pho Pasteur opened in 1991, and it has been serving an extensive menu of Vietnamese food — including, yes, some of the best pho in the city — ever since. Looking for a quick lunch to go? Head over to Banh Mi Huong Que, just two stores down the street." - Valerie Li Stack, Eater Staff

"Pho Pasteur (682 Washington St., Chinatown) has a dish called banh hoi chao tom thit nuong, which they translate as steamed vermicelli cake with shrimp cake on sugarcane and grilled pork. It’s in the appetizer section, but the portion is ample. It is served with banh hoi, which are very thin rice noodles that are woven together into a bundle and served with various vegetables and meats. Pho Pasteur is currently offering takeout, delivery, and indoor dining." - Karen Wilber

Google
- Bun Bo hue slaps 👍 they give enough meat and the broth is bomb 💣 only critique is that the noodles were a tad bit overcooked but was a great dish overall - don’t recommend the spring rolls, the shrimp are small and sliced in half (so 1.5 shrimps per roll), it’s mostly noodles. They made the peanut sauce well though - three bean drink is ok! Would have preferred more coconut milk and less toppings but it’s still good - service was great, good came out fast - plenty of seating

Karen Shih

Google
If you have a peanut allergy don’t eat here. On DoorDash, it says specifically peanuts on the side… that is absolutely not the case! No option for a special request either. This is actually the second time it’s happened, I decided to give them another shot but I guess my faith was misplaced.

Google
Im giving pho pasteur it five stars because its always been super quick and consistent. Sometimes i have ordered and the pho is here before I even finish washing my hands. The spring rolls and pho are tasty, better than what i had on newbury street for twice the price. Its perfect if youre running tight on time before the ballet, as long as you can get the staff to come put your order in quickly

I’ll begin by saying that normally I love Pho Pasteur! But this visit was way off. I ordered the curry chicken soup (I love flavor. I love spice. I enjoy lots of punch of flavors and don’t shy from them). That said, all I could taste was curry. It completely overwhelmed everything else. There were spots where it was not even mixed in well, just dumped in (see photo of container after I emptied it). So disappointed. Assuming they were having an off-day? The curry taste was sooo overwhelming, and, again, I love curry!

Service was very quick and hospitable. We ordered the bun bo hue and egg rolls. A lady brought out vegan egg rolls by accident, but we were later given the meat egg rolls after letting them know. The bun bo hue's broth was solid and not too oily, nothing spectacular just reliable. Egg rolls were also good, but one of the two that I received was slightly cold. Portions were very good for the price. Fair amount of toppings.

Went here for lunch on my lunch break. The service was fast and the staff were super attentive. Food comes out quick and it’s delicious and filling. 10/10 recommend.

Google
I wanted some healthy-ish hot soup to warm me up so I was debating between pho and bun bo hue. I went for Bun bo hue (Hue beef noodle soup). It's item 11B on the menu. I wasn't disappointed. It was really delicious, generous portion and had a good amount of meat. Definitely recommend trying this dish! As for service, I don't have high expectations for service in Vietnamese restaurants so from what I see, service was fast and decent. No one was rude.

Google
The food came out within five minutes of ordering it. The pho is very good! Soup was great, noodles were a little soggy, but overall I would visit there again. Pho- 9/10 Thai tea- 9/10 (a bit sweet) Spring rolls- 7/10 (not a lot vegetables and the peanut sauce was very sweet)

Yelp
Amazing pho! I was so glad to find a hole-in-the-wall pho restaurant in Boston! Prices: Very reasonable! It's $14.50 for a XL, $12.50 for a small. Quantity was very large and I had leftovers to take home (always a win). Food: Broth was very flavorful! Beef was thinly sliced and tender. My husband got the seafood w/pork pho and enjoyed the flavor as well. Pork belly as exceptionally flavorful. Service was good. Ambiance: eh, a hole in the wall place. A bit of a dingy vibe, but it adds to the appeal I think.

Yelp
I don't get why this is such a popular pho place compared to the other options. Place just seemed a bit worn down over the years It just felt like it was missing a lot of depth and finesse, directly comparing to other Pho restaurants scattered around. Contents felt thrown together hastily, bean sprouts and leaves were notably not fresh, the whole atmosphere just feels like they cared more about saving money

Adina S.

Yelp
My friends and I stopped in at Pho Pasteur late on a Friday night. We actually stayed until closing. The staff was very kind about informing us that it was almost time to close. It's a pretty casual spot, so don't expect fine dining! You know it's a good sign when it's always busy. Sadly I lost the pictures of the actual food... but thankfully I still had the reciept, so I know exactly what we ordered! We started out with the Spring Rolls, which were absolutely fresh and delicious. Nothing beats the sauce on the side. Two of us got the Beef Noodle Soup and one got the Vegetable and Tofu Noodle Soup. Both soups were excellent and the potions were huge!

Aya R.

Yelp
Dining method: Dine-in Item(s) ordered: Veggie pho (pho chay) and tofu fresh roll Speed: Food came within 20! Value: Reasonable pricing--I think this was listed as $14 and it was a lot of food The review: Talk about underrated! Pho Pasteur is a humble spot to get together with friends and eat good food. Everything was fresh and flavorful. The ambiance of the restaurant is definitely not updated, but I think that adds to the character. Servers are pretty blunt but still attentive. I had a great time here with the gals; if you're looking for a low-effort spot to hang and eat good Vietnamese food, Pho Chay is it.

Lily G.

Yelp
I made a mistake by ordering the crunchy noodles. Do NOT order the crunchy noodles. Every other dish looked better than mine and I'm sure tasted better too. The crunchy noodles resemble uncooked loose ramen tremendously. The flavors are good but it is impossible to eat since they are dry and stuck together. A fork and knife, a spoon, and chop sticks didn't help. When they crunch they break and fly everywhere, I found bits in my hair :( They gave me whole broccoli chunks on top that were at least 3 bites each. Really just a wild time all around. Server never came back to give us more water. Ambience is McDonalds in the 90s.

Yelp
I still love Pho Pasteur's beef pho, and it is the standard by which I compare every other pho soup. So, despite my love for their pho, I have to admit that the delicious pho might be the only good reason to dine here. Everything else I've tried on the menu is lackluster, and while the service is quick, it could also be described as abrupt, unwelcoming, and rude. I recently tried the "Jumbo" shrimp lemongrass, which had shrimp that were anything but Jumbo - these were more like medium / U40. And the lemongrass was too raw/firm to eat most of it. The interior space shows the restaurant's age and, and creating a comforting atmosphere is clearly not their priority. But, damn, that pho beef broth is stellar.

Ellie N.

Yelp
First time here and I really enjoyed the pho bowl here! The place is spacious and the food comes out fast. I would reccomend this spot

Daniel C.

Yelp
Kind of criminal that, after all these years of Chicken Pho slurping at Pasteur, that I am only now getting around to this review. Because that is what I do--order chicken pho (order the small, by the way, that is more than enough for a normal stomach) and devour said pho, topping off bites with mint leaves and bean sprouts and hot sauces. Especially during the lovely Boston winters, there is nothing quite so robust and warming as this Vietnamese chicken noodle soup. Sometimes I also order the fresh spring rolls--I recommend the shrimp and pork for the most flavor. Their peanut hoisin dipping sauce is hoisinfully good. Reasonable prices too.

Yelp
We go to Pho Pasteur roughly once a month for their classic Vietnamese noodles. The restaurant is easy to get to with fast service and a straightforward menu. I typically order their Bun Bo Hue, which comes with deliciously chewy noodles, sliced beef, and pork knuckle. Most noodle dishes can be ordered in different size options, which is very convenient for those days when you feel like eating extra or a little less. I also love the fried chicken wings on the menu, which are made to order. As a result, they are hot and crispy when they are served! We tried their spring rolls during our last visit and did not enjoy them as much as we liked. Since we came in the evening, we assumed that the rolls have been made for a while as the rice paper was tough and hard to chew. However, I assume they would be much better when ordered earlier in the day. Pho Pasteur is always incredibly busy but the staff do a great job of getting you seated as fast as possible. This always comes with the compromise of having to order and finish your food faster, but it is worth it for the delicious dishes. If you are ever in the Downtown area, definitely stop by and have a bowl of noodles!

Jason L.

Yelp
I eat at a lot of Pho places all over and I'm not very picky on my pho. But this was place seriously disappointing. We ordered pho and lemongrass chicken bun. The pho didn't have any flavor and noodles were mushy, but overall it did the job. The lemongrass chicken bun was straight up terrible. We thought maybe they gave us the wrong dish, but they said it was right. It tasted like nothing. Not like lemongrass, not even like salt, just nothing. Maybe the lemongrass chicken is not a popular choice. I get that. What really ruined the experience with the service. We asked for fish sauce twice. They forgot the first time and the second time they just told us "no, your food doesn't need it". Then we asked for some limes and they didn't bring that either. The one positive is that the food comes out fast. Overall, I'd seriously consider a different pho places before trying this one.

Yelp
We were hungry a lot while walking all over the place so we decided to stop at Pho Pasteur for lunch. Restaurant is busy, full tables, but we got seated quickly. We ordered beef & stripe noodles with trị color dessert for me while my son got him pork chop noodles & salty iced lemonade with sugar. We both went to town, so yummy! We also came back for dinner to try something else. Pad Thai was so delicious with generous portion, shrimp spring rolls we shared. And I really love avocado smoothie, I have to get once more today lol. Just keep in mind if you want nice decoration, this restaurant doesn't have. Very typically of Vietnamese restaurant, just basic with tables for most parts. For servers, I found it welcome as I can speak Vietnamese with them easily. I will definitely come back today to get for my parents & ourselves some food too before heading back home tomorrow.

David G.

Yelp
Great pho at a reasonable price! A staple for me and my college friends in Chinatown. I've only ordered pho and the summer rolls, so not much to say about the other items.

Shirley M.

Yelp
If you're looking for good pho in Boston, look no further - Pho Pasteur has you covered. This Chinatown joint is always crowded and for good reason - the menu is packed with traditional noodle dishes and strong Vietnamese flavors; the service, while none too intimate given how many people frequent this restaurant on any given day, is quick. Once you walk in, you won't leave hungry. I'm not exactly sure why this place is so popular, but note that it attracts locals and tourists alike - especially on those cold windy days when nothing feels better than a bowl of steaming hot soup noodles. It's nice to know that even after years, this place is still going strong. Besides the noodles, the fried quail and spring rolls are quite good. Be aware that their menu is more than extensive - maybe even overwhelming - but most likely you'll find something that hits the spot.

Yulee K.

Yelp
The meat was red and wouldn't cook all the way in the pho broth so it was really chewy. There wasn't much special about the pho here and portion sizes weren't that big.

Shumrith V.

Yelp
We accidentally came in after closing time on a Friday (closes at 9 pm), but they still seated us and took our order. Lots of seating and nice ambiance, nothing too extraordinary. The pho, on the other hand, was fresh and had great flavor. I got the chicken pho, and it also came with bean sprouts, Thai basil, and lime, which are must adds to the soup. My buddy got the vegetarian pho and he really enjoyed it as well. Overall, great service and great pho!

Tony L.

Yelp
I agree how Yelp got this accurately for a 3.5 star rating. A very busy Vietnamese restaurant known for its decent pho and flavorful seafood noodle soup. The generous portions of meat in both dishes left a lasting impression, ensuring a satisfying meal. The bustling atmosphere attests to its popularity, emphasizing the authenticity and quality of the cuisine. Ideal for those seeking a vibrant dining experience with delicious Vietnamese flavors.

Brian L.

Yelp
For what it is, I'd give it 5 stars. It's pretty fast, the service is no frills efficient and portions are pretty large for the price. Ambiance is pretty casual as well.

Dalena H.

Yelp
Need a solid dish to keep me full for my 4 hour bus ride back home. Saw they had lots of recognition and it busy so I took a chance. I was seated after a few minutes. They're very efficient and use up all their space. They came up to me 2 times asking if I was ready within the few minutes I was seated. I orded the com suong bo nuong. Was excited to see that they provided me with plentiful of fresh veggies to eat with this dish. I also liked how they cut up the short ribs so I just had to cut the meat off each individual bone. The beef was seasoned very well and had a nice char.

Garold T.

Yelp
When you walk in you're greeted by nice service. Everyone is friendly and very helpful to get you a seat. The ambiance of the restaurant is very fast and chill. Everyone here looks to be on a date so a good place to relax. When it comes down to the food. With a high recommendation on yelp I had high hopes for this place. If you love pho like myself then you'd probably be disappointed. Wasn't very beefy. The noodles were sweet, definitely not the kind from back home. The spring rolls were plain but the peanut sauce was good. Ide say this place is too fast paced to have good broth but that's just me.

Samantha Z.

Yelp
Feels like an old school Vietnamese restaurant. Here from NYC and looking for comfort food. We were seated really quickly. I ordered a pork chop over rice. Flavor is good but disappointed with the cook of the pork chop. Parts of it were undercooked/raw.

Rovingaile P.

Yelp
This is my go to spot for pho and collagen boost haha. I usually get a large pho dac biet, and the portion is good enough to split into two if you're not extremely hungry! Highly recommend requesting for their chili oil to eat with the meats.

E N.

Yelp
I came hoping for some really good broth and noodles, seeing how big the crowd was, but left feeling like it could have been better. This place is decent, but not notable. I had the bun bo hue, and it was not bad. Came with pig feet, which gets points for authenticity. However, it was frankly not cooked well enough -- the pig feet should have been very tender and falling off the bone. This one wasn't stewed long enough. The broth was kinda tasteless. Ingredients weren't really fresh. I think I have had better bun bo hue broth back in the Bay Area. The tables and seats feel dirty... While it gets 4 stars for authenticity, it's really 3 stars for execution. So I'll just round up.

Rita L.

Yelp
Average flavor, ordered #12 but they gave me the wrong bowl with only beef vs the combo of other kinds of meat and tripe (got it mixed up with another table). Also tried the pork chop over fried rice (+$3 if you switch from white rice), lots of fat on one of the two pieces of pork chop, a bit too much. Service was extremely slow and hard to get their attention. Hard to find parking nearby. Skippable imo. oh and skip the Thai iced tea, tasted like cotton candy and way too sweet...

Andy N.

Yelp
The pho was less than mediocre. The broth wasn't too rich in flavor, it came out warm rather than hot not reaching a prolonged temperature to cook the meat adequately, and they barely give any veggies in proportion with the pho. Additionally, the price was a bit high for a simple bowl of pho compared to other places. As for the service, the moment I walked in, I felt rushed to order, eat, and leave as quickly as possible. The restaurant was hectic and chaotic. Usually I let the aesthetic and service slide if the food is good, but unfortunately, I left disappointed.

Erika K.

Yelp
My go to pho place in Boston! The quality of the pho is amazing and they're generous with the amount of meat they put in. I also ordered the ham spring rolls that have a delicious balance of herbs, meat and crunch. Will order both of these every single time. Service is what you would expect from an authentic Vietnamese restaurant, to the point and quick.

Alee L.

Yelp
I haven't come here in many years, and coming back today for lunch I recall why I stopped coming in the first place. One the space is extremely tight. The tables have a lazy susan for the sauces, spoons, and chopsticks that take up half the space of the table. The service is meh, you have servers bumping into your chairs and tables while you eat. Most importantly the food stinks. There wasn't enough space for the food we ordered, again the lazy susan hogged up space, and the pork chop was dry, the beef curry was watery and bland, the food was terrible. Yeah, no thanks.

Jose R.

Yelp
Real close to my hotel, I have been wanting to go eat there. Good choice for this evening. This locale is right on the corner on a busy street. Let that not deter you from great food. The service was prompt and professional. Right away the order was taken and the food came out shortly thereafter. The venue had a good amount of patrons from all nationalities so dont be worried about language barrier. The food was good and tasty. Temperature was perfect as well as the condiments. The ambiance was a local eatery that people came to enjoy. Prices were accommodating and proportionate. While in Boston Chinatown give this place a visit.

My Fat Ass K.

Yelp
I love the food and authentic service. The old man who serves us all the time wins all my tips! Hard working soul

Eva A.

Yelp
I've been coming to pho Pasteur for years. Their pho is always a hit- my go to is the simple chicken noodle. My friends are fans of the grilled shrimp vermicelli and various beef and pork dishes. We tried the crispy lo mein for the first time and were surprised at how simple yet delicious it was. their gravy/ stir fry sauces never feel too heavy, regardless of the dish. Vegetables seem fresh and cut in large chunks, so they're never overgreased. I always leave this place very satisfied. Service is also incredibly quick- the restaurant is always busy, yet they always somehow find a table for everyone and you never have to wait long. Orders come out within 15 min, never longer. It's fantastic. Five stars for food and service. Deducting a point for overall cleanliness and in bathrooms especially, but it's difficult to imagine cleaning with how busy they get. Overall definitely will return over and over again.

Peter K.

Yelp
Great pho, old style dining room in Chinatown. Come for the good food. Always crowded, good mix of locals and visitors.

Jonathan D.

Yelp
UPDATE: THIS PLACE HAS WENT DOWN THE DRAIN! Was excited to have some pho after coming home from college and this was the first place I had in mind. When I first walked in it was busy as always but I did not see one asian person there. Usually the place is filled with asian people and a foreigner would've looked out of place, but now it is the opposite. I ordered the special beef pho and it came out quick as always. However the broth lacked that real beef bone flavor and tastes like an instant noodle soup packet. This used to be my go to place for pho in boston but gentrification has hit this place hard. Now I have to drive an extra 15mins to Quincy for quality pho. Makes sense that most asian migrants are moving down to quincy instead of this gentrified chinatown.

Alana K.

Yelp
I was craving soup, so I convinced my friend to get Vietnamese food with me. We went on a Tuesday night for dinner, and it was busy! It took a lot of effort throughout our meal to get our waiter's attention. I ordered the pho ga, which was amazing. The broth was flavorful and there was tons of chicken. My biggest complaint was that I received my food about 5 minutes before my friend. By the time we both received our dishes and started to eat, my soup wasn't as hot. Food: great! Service: not so great. I guess you can't have it all.

My-Linh D.

Yelp
I love pho and Pho Pasteur is a great to go place. I went here for a birthday dinner and they were able to seat us right away for a party of 9. The service is speedy and we get our food quickly even if dishes like banh xeo which can take a bit of time to prepare. I got bun bo hue and surprisingly it was not my favorite. It tasted a bit fishy but once you add some lime juice into it, it wasn't too bad. My to go is the pho dat biet and would get that every time but was trying to try something new.

Ngoc T.

Yelp
Bun bo hue was the best in all of the restaurants that I've ever been to. Really recommended.

Heidi M.

Yelp
I was in the mood for pho and went based off of recommendations I found online. I didn't want to spend too much, so I opted for this restaurant. It was fairly crowded, which was a good sign. The staff was quick to take my order and the food came out very quickly. The restaurant was spacious and fairly loud, but nothing I wasn't used to. Everything was as expected. The food was good and hit the spot, especially since pho isn't something I make at home or get often. My only issue was the bean sprouts were clearly not fresh. Some were already browning and it was not the most appetizing. The pho itself was the perfect ratio of beef to noodles. The spring rolls were refreshing and a perfect start to the meal.

Dillon T.

Yelp
Woah. This pho is legit. If you want the real deal this is the spot. Savory broth, and the beef has a delicious savory flavor to it you don't always get at other places. The rare piece were so tender like butter. Prompt service, in and out in 12 mins with a large pho

Marni M.

Yelp
What better to cure a hangover than some soup? My sister has highly recommended this place as she loves it. Arriving on a Sunday around 3 pm, we were seated right away. Almost immediately, our waitress asked if we knew what we wanted. It was the first time our friends had Vietnamese food so we wanted to peruse through the menu some more first. In the end, my sister got Chicken pho with shrimp, my friend got Beef pho with all the fixings, and I got Ca Kho To with catfish. I liked the chicken pho but the beef pho was, in my opinion, much more satisfying. Being in the mood for something sweet and sour, I thoroughly enjoyed the Ca Kho To as it hit all my marks of being flavorful with pieces of soft white fish. I was happy my friend loved her soup including the tripe, rare steak, and other fun choices of steak. Overall, the food is phenomenal. If you're going here for the service, you will surely be disappointed. Part of eating in Chinatown is the attitude of the waitstaff so just embrace it! Cannot wait to come again.

Kelly V.

Yelp
This restaurant is so dirty, the foods had no flavors, even though the foods came out quick. We ordered 2 Pho dac biet and a com tam suon bi cha. The broth was so plain and the fish sauce for the rice wasn't tasted good either. Also, the restroom has one gloomy light. Not recommended this restaurant.

Tu-Quyen P.

Yelp
Solid pho spot with generous portions of beef and a savory, salty broth that I tend to favor with just the right amount of noodles. Also loved the rice paper pork dish, super huge portions for a really good price. Refreshing and tasty! Would definitely come back again! Just bring your own sriracha or chili sauce because they don't have any. Brusque service but they're nice.

Anna L.

Yelp
Upon arrival, the authentic aromatic smell of the pho broth draws you in immediately. We were seated in the corner where the table was quite sticky but if the food is good, suppose I could slightly overlook that but nope. Food came in 10-12 minutes which is white impressive for how busy the place was on a Tuesday night. But undoubtedly the food was very underwhelming. The pho broth tasted beyond strange ... too fatty and loaded with sodium but it did look impressive but taste was a hard pass. The combination rice plate came recommended by the waitress and everything was cut so large it made it look so unappetizing. The "cha" tasted odd and microwaved, the "bi" was cut so large my toddler choked on it, the veggies were stale and turning brown ... needless to say it was a waste of a dinner night out in Boston which is such a disappointment.

Britany A.

Yelp
Great value price. If you are craving comforting food that will heal your soul this is the right place. The service is great, efficient and fast.

Michelle C.

Yelp
My go-to spot for pho or bun bo hue!! Delicious and affordable! It gets really busy especially during the night on weekends, so waited for about 5-10 minutes before we were seated. After we ordered, our dishes arrived in no time! The broth was rich and the portions were good, I can taste it as I'm typing it. My spice tolerance is pretty low, but I love the spice and flavor. It's also nice to see other people chatting and catching up here! 10/10 :)

Christine V.

Yelp
I decided to come here on Christmas day and had an enjoyable lunch. The chow fun noodles were very good but would be even better if the peppers had been sliced thinner. Too big. Service was a bit slap dash but ok. Casual atmosphere and comfortable place if you're alone as I was. I will come again for the Vietnamese dishes which looked delicious.

Gennie L.

Yelp
Oh my goodness Pho Pasteur has to be one of my favorite restaurants! The pho is AMAZING. There are truly no words to describe how good it tastes. My friend and I ordered #30 seafood noodle soup and #12 beef noodle soup. The broth is authentic and they give generous amounts of beef and seafood! The portion sizes are extremely worth it for the price they charge. The XL beef noodle soup was $12 and the L seafood noodle soup was about $11. They have S, M, L, and XL, but the L was just about the right size, very filling! The restaurant is quite big so there often isn't a wait, but it is always full of people! Customer service is not bad, but don't keep your expectations too high as they are often always busy. I cannot recommend this place enough! If you are in Boston, you MUST TRY Pho Pasteur. Overall rating: 10/10!

Kenia A.

Yelp
I've been going to Pho Pasteur since I was a teenager based on the recommendation of a few Vietnamese friends. Pho is a go-to comfort food, and I have yet to find a place that hits the spot the way Pho Pasteur does. The staff are kind, and there is such an intimate and authentic vibrance to the restaurant.

William G.

Yelp
Food was ok . The restaurant is dirty . From the front door is has the appearance of a dirty place . The bathrooms are filthy . I only had appetizers and those were ok .

Kimberly F.

Yelp
A tasty Vietnamese restaurant in chinatown. I got the Pho Tai Gau on a foggy late afternoon and it hit the spot. The service is quick!

Natasha K.

Yelp
Pho pastuer has good to mediocre Pho. The portions are decent and the service was nice and quick. Ambiance was fine nothing noteworthy.

Matthew B.

Yelp
My very first pho experience and it was great! I was advised by experienced pho enjoyers and was instructed to get the beef. It was very good for starters: not fatty, but very flavorful. The atmosphere was pretty utilitarian, which is the reason for 4 stars. Overall, solid choice for pho!
