Yelp
This Pho Quang Trung on Westminister is the earlier closing sister restaurant of the Pho Quang Trung on Bolsa which I reviewed years before. There are some differences between the two. Here an oval dish of limes, jalapeño pepper, bean sprouts, pungent Vietnamese basil are put on the table as soon as you order.
Excellent Cha Gio/fried egg rolls at the Bolsa branch are packed w/ thin glass noodles, dense, rough ground, spiced pork, carrots, onions & garlic. The fried skin is thicker, tougher, more rustic in feel, & breaking open of the roll releases a garlicly, black peppery, Nuoc Mam/fish sauce infused spiced aroma.
But the Westminister version has the filling far more ground & minced, and the filling is more lightly packed so it doesn't have that rustic feel. There is less of a satisfying meatiness.
However, West Minister's Com Bo Luc Lac/shaking beef & rice, I feel, is superior. The filet mignon cubes seem marinated in oyster sauce, nuoc mam/fish sauce, quick sautéed along with bits of onion & tons of strong smelling earthy, sulfurous, funky garlic.
This smelly, pleasant fragrance is more pronounced here. Slivers of raw onions are a good contrast to the meatiness of the beef which is plush, but w/a pleasing soft chaw. Rice is a good bland counter contrast.
The Bo Luc Lac is better than at Newport Tang Cang and infinitely better than the one at rip off restaurant, Little Sister in Manhattan Beach, that supposedly serves "fusion" Vietnamese to a mostly non-Vietnamese clientele.
Another difference, complimentary free sweet red Azuki bean soupy dessert comes in a small bowl. Lightly sweet, it's a comforting end to the meal.
So there are trade offs in going to either Pho Quang Trungs. It's like a choice between Sylla & Charybdis. It depends on which you like better.
4- Yelp stars if you favour the savory, fragrant Bo Luc Lac.
