It's petty cool that James Island now has a pho place. Unfortunately, I think they have some growing pains to go through. The staff didn't seem as if they were communicating with each other well, which led to a few mistakes during our meal (wrong item on our check, incorrect ingredients in the pho, etc).
Compared to Lanna in North Charleston, I feel that Lanna has a more flavorful soup stock. I will also say that Lanna seems more like authentic Vietnamese food, whereas Pho Saigon seems like it may be better for its American-Chinese dishes. I do prefer the atmosphere of Pho Saigon better than Lanna though.
We ordered the summer roll app (that came with two rolls), chicken pho and chicken noodle stir-fry. All three were on their Vietnamese menu. The summer rolls were a bit disappointing. I felt like the presentation could have been refined, but more importantly, it looked like they hadn't deveined the shrimp. That may not bother some, but it bothered me a little. In addition, they served it with a brown, savory/sweet sauce instead of the usual sweet/sour/fish sauce. The pho, as mentioned above, was alright. The stir-fried noodles were pretty good.
Overall, I would recommend this place if you're hankering for Vietnamese food and don't want to drive all the way out to North Charleston. Cost: a bit over average compared to what you get.
