Where to Eat Soup in Philly | Eater Philly

"Hearty, bold, and boutiful — this isn’t your average pho. The generous portions of meatballs, noodles, and nourishing broth makes this an entire meal that can be shared for two." - Ernest Owens

Where to Get A Bowl of Pho in Philly | Eater Philly

"There are two Pho Street locations in Philly proper, one on Market Street and one on Arch Street. Our take? Start with the Market location. You’ll walk into a sprawling, brightly lit cafeteria-like room with self-order kiosks. (If you’re new to pho, there are photos to guide you.) The portions are large and the efficiency dining makes for a quick, comfortable, casual meal. Plus, there are tofu and plain options available." - Tayler Bunge

Pho Street Vietnamese offers a somewhat unconventional dining experience. The location includes an Auntie Anne’s store inside that appears permanently closed, which adds to the unusual ambiance. However, the restaurant itself serves quality pho and is a convenient stop for anyone in the area or attending an event at the Convention Center. To order, guests should enter through the Arch Street entrance, where they can use one of two self-service touchscreens, as there is no staff member at a front counter to take orders. After ordering and paying via the kiosk, customers simply take a seat and wait for their number to be called. Orders are typically prepared and served quickly. A personal favorite is the shrimp pho, which comes in a generous portion. The broth is flavorful and comforting, especially satisfying during colder weather. While the food is commendable, the atmosphere could use improvement. The restaurant often feels empty and quiet, with minimal interaction from staff, who remain in the kitchen. On my first visit, I was accompanied by a friend who felt the space was uninviting and chose to leave. Enhancing the customer experience through a more welcoming environment would be beneficial. For instance, the television screens remain off, and there is no background music, which contributes to a lack of ambiance while waiting for food. Despite these shortcomings, Pho Street Vietnamese delivers a solid culinary experience. The quality of the food, especially the pho, makes it worth visiting if you're nearby and in the mood for a warm, satisfying meal.

Google
Really good and authentic Pho at a quick serve/ food hall style eatery shared with Auntie Anne's. I gave it 4 stars for the fantastic food alone. Service wise they are efficient and matter of fact. Atmosphere is sorely lacking; we came on Sunday night and it was really deserted feeling and looking. No music either makes it kind of creepy. But the food is good, so meh. 😃 Nom nom nom! 🤪

Google
Food was pretty good thus 4 star, this is a self serve restaurant that the space is shared with one other eatery. Walk in via north entrance will lead you to the menu kiosk(PC), then have a seat. Pick up when your number is called. Drink machine and restroom is to the right of service/kitchen area. If you are near convention center or central Philly and craving for pho, this place will do.

I attended an event at the Pennsylvania Convention center for three days in mid-April. Two friends and I decided to have lunch at Pho Street one day. The place was very clean and nice-looking. We ordered two pho dishes and a vermicelli dish. The food was prepared pretty soon. Both were very tasty and plentiful. The cost was very reasonable considering that we were at a popular spot in Philly. Overall, we were very happy with the meal.

Came here for dinner on Friday night during conference. The food is good at very good price point and great amount of food. It was also very busy because of a conference so the wait was about 30 min to get our food. However, both my friends and myself had bad stomach aches and diarrhea afterwards. It was most likely the bean sprouts.

Delicious broth! Ate from here 2x when I visited the city.. I had shrimp pho with beef honey broth. Extra everything. $14. Just try it. You'll like it.

Google
Friendly staff, generous portions, pho broth a bit salty so almost no need to add hoisin. They were "out" of hot sauce so couldnt season the dishes as much as we would like. Space inside is open and clean....but felt almost empty. Will return and try other dishes though.

We lived in Saigon Vietnam for 2 years and this is as close to there as we have found. We visited Philadelphia last weekend and ate here one night. I had left overs the next day and it was AMAZING. I had a bowl of Pho and my daughter had the grilled pork chop and rice. The pork chop melts in your mouth. The flavors brought back memories of our time in Vietnam. If you want good Vietnamese food this is the spot.

Yelp
10/10 every time I order food from here! Stopped by this past weekend to pick up a few broken rice platters for my friends and I along with some pho and we loved it. Oddly I used to dislike the taste of pho, thought it resembled perfume, think it was mainly the cilantro and basil that took me some getting used to over the years, but I gave it another try this weekend and fell in love. So I'm going through a pho phase lol and I'm ordering some for lunch today. Pho street is the bomb.com

Yelp
I ordered takeout delivery from this place so I cannot comment on the establishment or service itself. However, I ordered the shrimp summer rolls and veggie pho and was pleased by the order. The pho comes with lots of noodles and broth and fixings (all separate so the broth doesn't make anything soggy, which I appreciated). The summer rolls come in an order of 2 with a side of peanut sauce that is all very good. I've ordered several times from this place and would recommend as a mid-week takeout spot.

Yelp
Food is good but average. Has self order machines. More fast food restaurant vibes. Seating was all over the place. Mainly 2 person tables. Did not wow us there are definitely better pho places around. It all came out quick though. No servers really, your number gets called to pick food up.

Yelp
A pretty dang excellent banh mi that knocked my socks off. Okay now that we got the important thing out of the way, the in-depth review and story for those that care. I used to live on arch street. I've been going to reading Terminal market for as long as I've been in Philly. I must have passed by Pho Street over 200 hundred times. But I've never gone in; despite my love of pho and banh mis. Why? Honestly I think it's because of the weird 90s fast food place style design and the fact that it shares a space with auntie Anne's. Not that I have anything against pretzel chains, but visually the place didn't inspire much confidence. Boi was I wrong. I was craving a good crisp fresh summer banh mi so I said fudge it, why not. Got the chicken which is my usual go to and it absolutely knocked my socks off. Veggies fresh and crisp. Chicken juicy and delicious. And a bangin' siracha sauce that I just doused it with. Probably one of the top 3 banh mis I've ever had. For a solid $10 too. For the price, very good quality sandwich. Service was also quite nice. I felt bad for interrupting the guy at the counter's lunch but he was very accommodating and prompt. Will definitely be back for more Banhs and to try their famous rice that the other reviews talk about. Do attend.

Yelp
Pho-nomenal Pho in Philly! Beyond fantastic and delicious! Great service and nice interior

Yelp
Pho street has a couple of branches in PA, some in Philly, one in Villanova. I don't recommend going to this Philly one because the food is mediocre; there are better Vietnamese restaurants in the area so no need to go here. Also, we came when they just opened. I get it running a restaurant is busy and hard, but literally everyone was screaming at each other in an open-concept kitchen, and as a guest, I find it annoying. If they're going to yell, then don't do open-concept kitchen so it won't affect the customers lol.

Yelp
The employee don't know how treat customers. One of the worst service ever. .......and also there food are not good.

Yelp
It tastes good. It's good to have self-service Vietnamese noodles. In short, the food is dry! I ordered noodles and pork chop rice. In the facade decoration, you should take a serious care of it.

Yelp
We walked all the way to Pho Street to pick up some bahn mi sandwiches but the doors were locked! We went during business hours.

Yelp
Food: 3.75 Out of 5 Ordered fresh spring rolls and the fried vegetarian rolls. Flavors were good, but not fantastic. Service: N/A Ordered take out. Kinda slow to bring their food out Environment: 4 Out of 5 Standardized Vietnamese joint, probably for the downtown scene. Not the typical pho shops I'm used to, but nice in a pinch. Overall: 3.75 Out of 5 As mentioned earlier it's not my favorite, but it's a pretty safe place to get Vietnamese food in a pinch. Pricer for portion size, but I wouldn't be surprised because the reason was because of commercial rent prices in center city. For center city it's not terrible.

Yelp
My daughter wanted Pho after she blew through her Christmas money shopping and I was happy to oblige. When entering the restaurant, make your way to the side of the counter. There you will find a kiosk in which you place your order. It's an easy set up and one is able to decide what broth, protein and toppings (along with sides) you want for your pho (or anything else you might want to order). We both got tofu pho with chicken broth and I got grilled pork on the side and she got grilled chicken. The pho was delicious, warm, comforting and filling. The grilled pork was oh-so-good and I promptly cut it into pieces and ate it in my big bowl of soup. This was a good place for pho and it satisfied our craving. Tip: the code for the bathroom is on the bottom of your receipt so you might want to hold onto that through out your meal.

Wilson M.

Yelp
The order was quick and convenient. The pricing a was very fair and not overpriced. The food came out quickly and it was really good. The place itself is very spacious and clean, and so are the bathrooms. I recommend going to this place if you like Vietnamese cuisine.

Yelp
I heard this place was the truth for their vermicelli noodle bowls. I've been in the hunt for the Bò Nướng Hành Hương and this place just had the regular beef option which still looked good. I ended up getting the shrimp spring roll combo bowl with extra cilantro and bean stouts. IT WAS SO GOOD. Flavor: pretty spot on for a Vietnamese rice noodle (vermicelli bowl). The fish sauce wasn't too sweet or tangy. The bean sprouts and lettuce balanced the sweetness of the sauce and and there was a little heat in the bowl as well. There might have been some crispy shallots on top that was a huge bonus in the flavor profile. Customer service: I typically ask folx to change their gloves if I see a few orders go by or there's general food allergens in the building. The staff member didn't even bat an eyelash. They quickly changed their gloves with no disgruntled behavior whatsoever. Which is a big deal for me. I've walked out of places because of that type of behavior, when customers have requests that are within health code standards. COVID-19 precautions: From what I could see, the staff were not wearing masks. I was ok with this because I did take out to warm my food up at home. There were no social distance markers on the floor or information/guidance on the door upon entry. All in all, I'm a repeat customer and for a fast casual restaurant, this place is worth its weight in gold.

Yelp
We were in Philadelphia and needed a dinner that could be delivered quickly. We were in a time crunch and when we saw Pho Street was under 30 minutes, choosing them was a no-brainer. Vietnamese food is always a good choice! We ordered the lemongrass vermicelli, the summer rolls, and chicken pho. All the food was fresh, colorful and definitely hit the spot after a very long night of traveling. Summer rolls are one of my favorite things, and these definitely hit the spot as fresh and full of flavor. The value was extremely fair, and while we didn't get to visit the restaurant in-person, we'd absolutely recommend Pho Street for anyone in need of a standard comfort meal of delicious Vietnamese food.
google avatar

Cassandra L.

Yelp
Now I know this isn't the most traditional place for Pho / Viet food in the city but it's honestly so good! Yes it might be SLIGHTLY more expensive than other "traditional" pho places nearby but the food here is great. The pho has a good beefy flavor, perfectly salted and doesn't need any additional sauces added to it. The meat in the pho broth is always good. And their vermicelli dishes are tasty as well! The grilled pork has that charred flavor but was never dry, and the crispy spring rolls always hit the spot. If you're looking for Vietnamese food in the center city area this will hit the spot. Not sure if it beats the other well known, traditional pho spots in the city but definitely a good neighborhood spot or a place to eat for your work lunch break if you work nearby.

Yelp
Fast and friendly. Order at the kiosk. Hot Pho comes out in minutes. Convenient to the convention center.

S W.

Yelp
Chaotic! They use kiosk ordering machines and call your number for you to pick up your order at the counter. We waited almost an hour to get one item of our orders, and then waited another 20 minutes for another item to be ready. Items of the same order did not come out together! I insisted not to leave the counter until our dinks were also ready. And we were not the only one who experienced this. Another customer went up asking for a refund, but they were too busy to care for her request..

Yelp
I was craving pho, unfortunately some other spots were closed and it was bleeping cold so pho delivery it was. I was hangry, that hanger dissipated with every bite of this delicious pho broth. I got pho tai, they are generous with the veggies, beef quality coulda been better but to be fair I didn't ask for it to be not in the broth (this is an option to avoid overcooking). Very fragrant, me likey.

Yelp
Upon entry the place looked like a cafeteria/food court. It has a self-serve kiosk system but there are workers in the kitchen. I ordered the deluxe pho, chicken pho, and pork and shrimp spring rolls for $32. I didn't buy a drink because they seemed kind of expensive so I asked the staff for a water cup and they were kind enough to give me one. They call your number out and you pick up your tray of food at their table. The food looked very colorful with their fun trays and plates. My friend said the pho broth was a bit salty. I found it to be okay. They weren't shy of any meat in my pho and gave bean sprouts, basil, and lemon instead of lime for toppings. They had the usual sauces for pho on the side too. The spring rolls were really fresh. The peanut sauce was good. Overall the food was decent, the ambiance was a bit lacking, but it was a nice contactless experience.

Yelp
A great option for Vietnamese food , located close to downtown area and has great options. The quick machine ordering was a pleasant surprise, I am a big fan and order took about 10 mins to get ready. The banh mi is really good! The bread is fresh and toasted to perfection, the meat was marinated and seasoned well , tasted pretty authentic overall. I also ordered a couple summer roles and they were good. Plan to visit again and maybe try some pho but definitely big fan of the banh mi ! Seating area is questionable and not a lot of server based help but I had take out so it didn't bother me that much

Yelp
I have no idea if it's a custom or etiquette to eat all the pho. But it's definitely a challenge every time. I actually ordered plain pho, me being vegetarian. Tofu is squishy and flavor-less to me. The vegan broth mixed with onions, scallions, and jalepenos is simply wonderful. Gives the broth a tad bit of spicy ness. I don't like their thin yellow sauce, presumably duck sauce. The hoisin sauce is FIRE! It's only my second time trying it. Lastly the veggie spring rolls are full of well veggies and they're delicious. If it wasn't for the huge bowl of pho I would've bought another order of veggie rolls to go.
google avatar

Zach S.

Yelp
First time having pho. After I finished it I was stuffed to the gills. It was really tasty. There was only one guy working and he was real friendly and got my order done quick. The spring rolls are also pretty good. I saw a Mouse, but the kitchen was pristine so it must have just come in off the street.
google avatar

Yelp
I was in town for a conference and this place is literally steps away from the convention center. I ordered the deluxe rice vermicelli and it was good. Food is fresh and price is reasonable.
google avatar

Anna L.

Yelp
Really good food. Massive portions, and I love the kiosk option since it makes the process of ordering and getting your food so quick. Great option if you do not want to wait in all the convention lines for food.

Corinne M.

Yelp
This place is unsanitary and rude. I had a napkin in my soup & they refused to refund me and accused me of lying. DO NOT GO HERE
google avatar

Morganne M.

Yelp
solid basic pho place. portions are a bit light on the noodles/meat, but the broth is solid and they've got the requisite fresh basil/bean sprouts/hot sauce/fish sauce on lock. no complaints, but nothing to write home about either. they know their market and knock it out fast.
google avatar

Gloria E.

Yelp
Huge soups (easily able to split between two people) with tender steak, delicious beef balls, and flavorful brisket. The sprouts, jalapeños, basil, and sauces all come free on the side as well. I was rushing to finish my bowl, but I could've easily brought back half for a dinner time leftover. I didn't realize this was a chain, but the soup was ready quick and with all of the expectations met of a normal vietnamese place.
google avatar

Jada G.

Yelp
I've had Pho Street closer to 30th street before and this one is drastically different. The lack of real front counter employees makes it feel a bit aloof and you don't really know if anyone is working or not. I got the summer rolls which were pretty standard though not sure they were worth the price. The chicken curry was decent, but again, I don't think it was worth how much it cost. Another thing this place seems to struggle with is all the single use plastic. I got two huge styrofoam containers for 2 summer rolls and some white rice separately, plus the plastic container for the curry in a plastic bag. The chopsticks are covered in plastic too. Considering there are so many cheaper Viet places as close as a block away, I can't imagine coming here over one of those places if you have the choice, especially because service is crazy fast, the flavors are all there, and the value keeps you coming back. I struggle to give this place a good rating and I suppose I know why it seems to be empty every time I walk by it.
google avatar

Leonard H.

Yelp
4.5 star The place is very clean and you order thru the touch screen. It's great you have the options to get things like steamed bean sprouts or don't include certain items. We ordered the deluxe pho and the broken rice with pork chops, egg quiche, and beef short ribs. People complain about $11 pho but I think actually it's cheap for the amount of food you get. I've tried tons of pho places and been to tons of pho places all thru Washington Ave but location proximity next to Reading Terminal, City Hall, and Chinatown plus no tip and tax included it's really good deal. They give massive portions of meat, would've been okay with less meat and more noodles. Also the broken rice was good, enjoyed the portions as well but the beef shortrib and pork chops would be better thinner and softer, more flavorful. Overall, you get amazing value for great food in a prime location! Will definitely be back.
google avatar

Ky T.

Yelp
Great new pho place in center city. More modern and casual than the places on Washington ave. You order by kiosk, pick up your order, enjoy your meal then drop off your tray in the corner. Got the sirloin and brisket pho and a grilled pork banh mi. Sirloin was something nice you don't usually see in pho. Thick tender slices, very satisfying. The banh mi was stuffed. A lot more meat and veggies than many other places. An Aunties Anne's pretzels is also located here which was nice. Can't go wrong ending your meal with a sweet almond pretzel. This place opened just in time, perfect for the cold weather.

Yelp
In Vietnam, they call it "Banh Mi." In Philadelphia, any long sandwich is a "hoagie," including this incredibly delicious Vietnamese sandwich of perfection filled with grilled meats, marinated in lemon grass, inside a fresh French baguette. Try the grilled pork. One of the best Banh Mi sandwiches I've had, reminiscent of Houston's famous Vietnam town. Also good was the rib-eye in a vermicelli bowl. I added grilled shrimp and crispy spring rolls.
google avatar

Stephanie Y.

Yelp
tl;dr: Tasty pho near rittenhouse square! A little pricy, but super delicious. The long version: I got the eyeround beef and the tendon. It came out to $12, which is a little more than I'm used to paying for pho, but there was a lot of food! The amount of tendon that they gave was incredibly generous compared to other pho places, and the broth was an amazing flavor. The tendon was also super soft and a great texture - none of that overly chewy stuff. Food came out quickly and ordering was quick and easy. Would definitely come back here again!
google avatar

Sandeep D.

Yelp
I was hoping to get some pho with vegetarian broth, but unfortunately they ran out of veggie broth. I still tried their summer rolls and got the veggie bowl with spring rolls, it was quite satisfying for a fast food place. The location was clean and the staff was courteous. The bowl however was quite big so hard to finish (at least for me). The ingredients were fresh and rightly proportioned for the bowl size. Looking forward to try their veggie broth pho sometime.
google avatar

Sean N.

Yelp
Wow. It looks like a chain restaurant because it has touchscreen ordering and there's no waiter service but the food says otherwise. Fresh, generous and delicious.
google avatar

Shardai G.

Yelp
Solid pho here. The soups are fresh with good broth and veggie add-ins. I haven't tried anything else yet, however I'd like to try more. I have both dined in and took out and both times were just as good. They have sauces to add in on the side, so don't forget! $7.50 for plain soup and $11 for soup with meat/poultry.

Marion N.

Yelp
Best pho we've had. Veggie tofu pho with a delicious aromatic broth and a generous amount of all ingredients. Wish we lived closer so we could make this a regular place for dinner
google avatar

Susan K.

Yelp
My go to spot for a quick pho! The restaurant is very clean and ordering from the monitor when you arrive really streamlined the ordering process. The food comes out really fast once you placed your order. Highly recommended when you are in a rush.
google avatar

Qi Quan L.

Yelp
I had the deluxe vermicelli to go while my friend got the pho and shrimp summer rolls. The ingredients were very fresh and they tasted great (the shrimp summer rolls weren't the best I've had, but the sauce is on point). The portion was decent for the price too. Would definitely visit again.

Michelle S.

Yelp
I have ordered delivery from them multiple times now-- and each time as delicious as the past. I can't speak to the in-house dining experience but what I can say is that they exceeded my expectations. I love their hoagies and rolls. My favorite might be the shrimp "hoagie" aka a bahn mi. I'm not much of a jalapeño person so I get that removed but I'm sure it compliments the dish well.
google avatar

Miguel V.

Yelp
I had the sesame beef with broken rice and WOW! I haven't tried the Pho but this meal was on point. Great little spot to grab a quick bit for lunch. Great portion size and friendly staff
google avatar

Jenny K.

Yelp
so happy this place opened! it's a good spot for people that work in center city that don't feel like walking towards chinatown or riding to viettown area it's similar to the one near Trader Joe's where you order off of a screen and wait for your number to be called. one thing though is that this place is pretty pricey, it's not the normal $9 pho i'm used to on washington ave. the summer rolls were pretty dry when i got them so i probably wont be ordering them again but the pho was good! my friend's pho took an extra 20 minutes though which was annoying all in all, it's a good spot for a quick lunch but prices need to be lowered a bit
google avatar

Jeff T.

Yelp
Had to grab something to each between sessions during our conference. This place was close by and could be fast. I was impressed with how they automate the ordering process to be self-service. I was not impressed with the food though. Coming from an area that has really good Pho, this one was a three stars for me. The service was pretty fast considering how busy they were at the time I was there.
google avatar

Desiree G.

Yelp
Fast casual spot serving quality ingredients. They did not skimp on portions and it was a good price! I got the eye round steak and brisket pho and my boyfriend got the sesame beef vermicelli. Both were really good!
google avatar

Val U.

Yelp
Great little lunch spot that's right across the convention center. Modem approach... You place your order on the machine. It gets cooked and placed on trays for you with all the condiments. Up to you to grab your chopsticks, extra sauces, spoon, drinks etc. Very generous portions, totally with 1.00usd for extra tofu! Quick service, very nice and helpful staff. Great pricing. Would definitely stop by again!
google avatar

Pinky P.

Yelp
We stopped by here when they just opened. We got a pho bowl and a banh mi. Both were chicken. However, the chicken in the banh mi was flavored a lot better than the pho. The owners were there and were really nice. It's a great spot that has been vacant for years so it's convenient to the convention center, marker east and locals in Chinatown.

Yelp
It rains suddenly. I happen to be sheltering from the rain in this restaurant. The restaurant is close to Reading Terminal and clear. Just using machine to pay, and then picking up from the bar. It's very convenient. The taste is good and the price is reasonable.
google avatar

Abi O.

Yelp
I randomly stopped here for some quick lunch. I was pleasantly surprised with how efficient the service was. I got the shrimp pho which was well priced and a decent amount of shrimp in the dish

Carol K.

Yelp
Love this place! Despite the name, I actually find their non-Pho options to be the best. (The pho is good though.) The pork chop and rice is honestly the best pork dish I've ever had. Everything is easily customizable so you can alter the dish to your preferences/allergies, and since you order through a touchscreen and they work from a printout, the workers never miss a detail no matter how many changes you make. It's a great value too. My family can get a delicious meal for three people for under $30 and have leftovers for the next day. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Nice new place - clean and directly across from Convention Center. Easy ordering on kiosks. Ordered the Shrimp Vermicelli. Great. Will definitely be back.
