10 Best Thai Restaurants in Metro Detroit | Eater Detroit

"The menu at the friendly family-run Pho Tai is divided into Vietnamese and Thai entrees, with a little teriyaki too. Potato curry, green curry, and drunken noodles are some of the best dishes, and there are five levels of spiciness. Take off some of the heat with a Thai iced tea." - Monica Williams

Metro Detroit’s Best Vietnamese Restaurants for Takeout and Delivery | Eater Detroit

"Pho Tai is often overshadowed by similar peers in town, but this no-frills, strip mall restaurant is one of the top pho spots in Madison Heights. Pho — with no less than 13 beef variations — comes in large, extra large, and extra-extra large sizes. There’s even a vegan option. The specials menu features delicacies such as catfish or pork belly in a clay pot and roasted quail. While the restaurant is offering dine-in service, customers can also place orders by phone for takeout." - Eater Staff

Google
I have honestly tried about 8-10 different other spots for PHO. No other place does it like pho thai. The quality is unreal, it’s good every single time. It doesn’t smell fucky or lack flavor. It’s a bowl full of love and warmth and everything you’d want out of pho. If you are looking for a spot, try this!! You’ll love it

Was really hoping to find my go-to after moving to the area. Sadly will have to keep looking. The Pho broth is way too sweet… I was pretty disappointed at how sweet it was while lacking any depth of flavor. The chicken in the pho seemed very low quality, I ended up not eating it. The like seemed old and had a flavor of almost off. The egg rolls are very skinny, and didn’t taste great either. Thai tea was extremely sweet as well. I’m husband had the drunken noodles and first thing he noticed also was how sweet his dish is (he has a sweet tooth and usually complains that things aren’t sweet enough). Staff is very friendly and smiley. Restaurant is decently clean but not stellar. Probably won’t come back.

Google
Such a big disappointment on the pho house special and the customer service. I told my waitress that I only found 1 piece of tendon in my pho and she asked to use a chopstick to dig up in around my pho to COUNT how many tendon she can find as if I was lying to her. After the waitress got done searching for the 1 piece and a not even half piece, she called it two pieces she found. If you want pho, please drive 10 more seconds to Little Saigon and you will experience what real Pho is. And if it matters, pho tai do charge automatic tip if you’re dining in for 4 person.

Google
Food was good overall. No real complaints besides not carrying chicken satay. Crab Wonton was excellent and different breading from what I’m use to with crab Rangoon. Seasoned inside and the breading was fluffy & dense. Wasn’t a fan of the dressing for the Vermicelli bowl #15 I had. Healthy choice minus the deep fried egg roll! Prices were decent and affordable. Staff extremely helpful providing recommendations. Would recommend checking out this place. Will be back for the crab cheese wonton.

Google
For the value it is well worth it. Has always been my go to place for pho. I have dined in this place several times and I can say they are very consistent with the taste. Atmosphere is okay, dated and the outside appearance doesn’t speak much but don’t let it fool you since the food inside is really tasty and the proportion is good

Google
We're in town just for couple of nights and figure that we want to have some Pho, and we definitely came to the right place! We both ordered Pho Dac Biet. Also ordered Fresh Rolls and Pot Sticker. None of them were disappointing. Their Chili Oil is so good!

Google
First of all, this place looks small on the outside but is incredibly spacious. They are immediately welcoming. The food is wonderful. Hmong Papaya Salad is brilliant with lots of fish sauce and just the right amount of spice. Fried catfish curry is filled with fresh veggies and a beautiful curry sauce. Definitely worth a visit.

Yelp
Our staff ate here for a lunch meeting. I called ahead and they set up a nice table for the 16 of us. The waitress was so nice, upbeat and super attentive. I personally tried the chicken pho for the first time and it was sooo goood!! This is definitely a spot we will be coming back to.

Yelp
Big restaurant - plenty of space for groups. They have a bar and Vietnamese and Thai menu. I got black Vietnamese coffee and my friend had iced green tea - both tasted sweetened. We got pho tai that came with all the usual fixings and the broth is good! Chicken teriyaki had good reviews as did the vermicelli bowl with pork and egg roll. I usually gauge Vietnamese restaurants by their spring rolls but didn't order them this time since the pho was going to be so big - so will have to come back to try them! We also ordered some to-go meals (pho and a rice dish) which were well packed for the ride home - my husband liked his rice dish with pork chop and egg. It's a bit dated decor and Service was a bit slow, we had to flag someone down to place additional to go orders and then again to pay; however the prices are very reasonable! I would come back and will recommend it.

Yelp
Our ABC dinner group came to Pho Tai for dinner tonight because we were on the letter "P". (We go to a different restaurant each month, beginning with the next letter in the alphabet.) There were 8 of us, and we were seated at a long table in the back of the restaurant. The menu was very large, and offered all kinds of Thai and Vietnamese food. Our group was pretty much split in ordering the two cuisines. We had one server, and she was very good. She kept everyone's orders (and bills) straight, and she was very good about refilling the water.I had Pad Sew. The portions were very generous; even after eating, I took home a quite full box, and those that had the Pho took home nearly a quart! Prices are reasonable as well. Definitely worth checking out.

Yelp
Great food! I like that I can choose between Thai or Vietnamese food when I'm there. The Gang Gai and Pho were both delicious!

Yelp
Good pho! Love the broth! Prompt service. Coming from Fresno California! Your pho tastes even better than some Asian Restaurants in Fresno California

Amorette B.

Yelp
The food here is top notch. The pad ped is the best I've ever had and I love their crab rangoon. I don't think I've ever had a dish here I didn't like. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Got takeout on a whim. The spot was clean and the employees were friendly and very knowledgeable. The food was good and didn't disappoint. We will be back! Ps - they say their medium is spicy, but I beg to differ.

Yelp
My wife and I recently visited for a date night. Our server was pleasant and offered great recommendations. She checked on us occasionally as one expects and did not overrun our conversation. The food was delicious. We had eggrolls, fried rice, and peanut curry. We both enjoyed our meal, and looking forward to trying other dishes. Worth noting that the floor had quite of bit of debris under and near tables where others had sat...it would behoove the restaurant to have the staff clean not only the tables, but also the floor....a quick zoom broom could make all the difference. Mind you this is not being picky about a small scrap of paper, this was lots of food debris that was very conspicuous.

Yelp
My friend and I came here for dinner because it's one of his favorite restaurants in the area! The place is clean and spacious and not too expensive - can definitely get something under $15 and $10 is doable depending on your portion size. 3/5: Pho with eye round steak and tripe - the broth was flavorful but overall much too salty than I would prefer. There wasn't a lot of meat in this, sadly. Noodles aren't too bad either! 5/5: The pork belly simmered in clay pot was amazing! Super flavorful and spicy and hits the cravings all in the right places. It's super juicy and tasty! Yum! The next time I come back, I definitely will get the pork belly and try the pork chop and rice dish!

Amit S.

Yelp
The only thing you want to eat is pho. I am highly disappointed with all other the food items. The bigger concern is when you share a concern with food quality they will pretend it's all good. I am not sure this restaurant is denying the facts!!!!

Yelp
The customer service is going down hill and the owner is cutting corners. Previously this was my main PHO spot but now I no longer go. They are raising prices and cutting corners everywhere. The owner pack the Thai tea with tons of ice and when I asked to reduce the ice, she just severely water down the drink which is very noticeable. My main go to was extra large size Pho. I used to be satisfied with this but have noticed a reduction in noodle portion as well as meat portion all the while the price increased by quite a bit. I thought it might have been just me, but then I see other skinny guys paying extra for more noodles on a extra large portion which is ridiculous. Now I go to Little Saigon and have no problem with their extra large portions with both noodles and meat.

Yelp
Pretty large restaurant inside, at the corner of a shopping plaza. Very clean inside, you seat yourself and menu is available by scanning the bar code. I got #19 regular size (they have two more sizes that is larger!) which is steak and meatball pho. The flavor was fantastic and regular size is just fine!! Overall quick and delicious lunch option! My colleague got the curry and he said it was delicious!

Yelp
3.5/5, rounded to 4/5 The pho broth was very interesting, in a good way :) My roommate mentioned it was on the sweeter side and I agree. Adding the typical sriracha made it quite good. The meat was delicious and tender. The fried rice was also surprisingly (?) delicious. I guess i wasn't expecting much because most pho places do not also serve Thai food, but both the Viet and Thai sides of this place had solid food. (as of this review, lunchtime pho and Thai entrees average $8, which is insane!)

Yelp
The place was empty on a Saturday night. The egg rolls were unfavorable and tasteless, although the were piping hot. The pho broth had good flavor, but the beef was not good at all. The red curry C3 was good. Not enough chicken. Maybe 2 ounces at most. They have plenty of rice to soak up the curry, which was flavorful and the right level of spice as a medium. The service was mediocre at best. Quick service, but very unwelcoming. Can get better service and equally good food though out Detroit. Won't be back.

Yelp
These guys know the deal when you order, very flavorful and not dirty at all. Must try

Yelp
Very good my go to for pho and Thai both amazing and staff here are very fast and amazing. No doubt the best in the city should try. The environment is great too.

Yelp
i love this place i wish i could eat it everyday. i really like the milk teas yum yum ymm

Yelp
There is better Thai restaurant than this. I am not Thai but I know the shrimp roll is not chewy and the noddle dish is so watery. The shrimp roll was a day old because the skin was chewy. The docor is very old and ugly. Worst thai restaurant in Novi to Warren area.

Yelp
Back down to four stars. Only received a half order today. I get inflation, and I have no problem paying more, (prices have went up) but DONT give me less.... That's crazy.

Trung N.

Yelp
One of the most authentic Asian restaurants and everything we have ordered taste homemade. The pho broth is the best around hands down. The entree portions are even bigger than most Vietnamese restaurants and the appetizers are great, like the egg rolls, crab ragoons, and different salads taste original. The service is pretty quick even during busy hours and seems like they have a great and friendly staff. I would and do recommend Pho Tai for original Vietnamese and Thai food to everyone I meet and they have all said the same!
google avatar

Yelp
This spot serves really good curry and crab rangoon. It's REALLY, REALLY GOOD. The pho dish is usually my go to. It has flavor and good amount of meats inside. They have limited tables to serve to customers (due to COVID-19). Some tables are tapped off to give customers safety measures from dining in so I liked that. Employees were nice and customer service was good. I recommend coming here for pho, even on a very cold day! The next time I visit I'll be sure to get some pics back on this review.
google avatar

Yelp
My family' favorite pho place. The broth is flavorful and the serving is big. Staff is nice and friendly. Service is good. Will keep coming back. Always busy with dine in and take out.

Yelp
If you're a seafood lover definitely try the seafood curry! I had it at a friend's place for lunch and had to have to have it again. Initially you'll get a small waft of seafood smell.... It's not overwhelming though. The coconut milk curry is creamy and tastes great. You can have it just as soup or pair it with rice too.

Yelp
**Trigger Warning** Abusive male Waiter and Racism! I've been here a few times with my spouse and bestfriend. Always had a nice experience. Yesterday I brought my cousin because this is her favorite type of cuisine and I wanted her to try a place I frequent often. We are true foodies at heart. Our usual waitress, a short woman, greeted us but we ended up with a young male waiter I never seen before. He was nice in the beginning but he ended up having a few snarky remarks and was passive aggressive when reminded of the items he had forgot. My cousin order Pho, which she ultimately ended up not liking and explained that to the waiter. (I also ordered crispy rolls with my pepper steak dinner, which I ultimately did not like but neither of us complained. When the woman waiter asked for a review we told her how we felt. She constantly made conversation when checking on us. There were no issues). The male waiter was irritated with my cousin not liking it, tried to gaslight her and single her out by saying "nobody ever complains and we make our Pho authentically and the best, idk what your issue is." and ultimately told her it doesn't matter because she is still being charged for it. We never asked to not be charged for it. We just simply stated our opinion then asked. (Also my cousin only took one bit of the Pho and decided right then it was not seasoned enough. Never ate anymore of it). We ended the conversation with him and I spoke to the original woman I usually do when she brought over the things the male waiter constantly kept forgetting. Things were heightened by this point because I felt so disrespected. I explained that to the female waitress and she agreed to talk to the bosses to see if I can get a discount for the food because of the whole encounter. When she walked away, he came back for more arguing and even threatened to call the police. One of the bosses came from the back and assured me he wasn't okay with how the male waiter acted or him threating to call the police. I felt not only was this hostile but also racist, considered we are two black women and the waiter is a white male. During the whole ordeal I still had to pay even though we were threatened, were in a hostile environment and treated like criminals because my cousin didn't like the Pho and he assumed we did not want to pay. I feel the owners really made a mistake hiring that male server and turned out, he is the original woman waitress's boyfriend. He screamed that while continuing to argue even though I asked him countless times to leave us alone and back away from us. Sad in my opinion that they allowed that male waiter to taint their business. We did not deserve to be treated that way.

Yelp
I get the pho Thai. The meat is sliced thinly and tastes like quality. I needed a new Vietnamese place and this one is my new favorite.

Yelp
BUGS IN VEGAN PHO DISHES 04/09/23 6:25pm At 6:00pm on April 8th, myself and two friends went to the Pho Tai restaurant located in Madison Heights. Each of us ordered the vegan pho and got through the majority of the meal. After the majority of the meal was eaten a we noticed that in each of our three bowls had small bugs of many types in our broth, on our vegetables and noodles inside the vegan pho. The more we looked the more we found. We each found at least 6 bugs in our vegan pho before we stopped looking. We put two of the bugs on a napkin and brought it up to an older woman at the desk to show her that specks. The woman told us they were not bugs and that she didn't know why we would say that about their food. She then brought an older man out who told us they were not bugs but pepper. I replied they were bugs because the had legs. They said usually bugs have wings so they could only have been pepper. Another friend then brought more bugs up on a white spoon. We then claimed they all had legs and that we would not be paying for our meal due to the bugs in each of our vegan pho dishes.

Yelp
Had lunch here the other day. Had the pho with round steak and meatballs, and the catfish in clay pot. Both were great. The broth was flavorful and they give you plenty of noodles, and basil, bean sprouts and jalapeño peppers on the side. The catfish dish is a carmelized catfish - very flavorful. I prefer a catfish filet; the catfish was butchered into two parts (body and the tail), so had bones and tail is hard to eat because of the cartilage - if two parts I would have preferred the fish head and body; fish cheek is some of the best part of the fish. Having said that, I would definitely go back. Might get the pork belly in clay pot next time.

Yelp
Love their portion for in restaurant and to go! Medium is a good spice level! Only thing I would like is for extra broccoli when I ask for it. It seems like the same amount of broccoli even if I ask for extra broccoli

Chloe S.

Yelp
Was looking for some pho and decided to try! Was delicious! Had crab Rangoon chicken pho and delicious thai tea will be back
google avatar

Letese' C.

Yelp
This is a solid place. I ordered delivery from here with my family and overall everyone was satisfied. I had the pho ga. It was pretty good. The broth was flavorful and I had all of the toppings I needed. I'm not a fan of the packaging though. It'll be more valuable if the noddles and meat come in a bowl and not a styrofoam box. It would've been harder to consume if I didn't have a bowl. We had a couple of orders of egg rolls and everyone thought they tasted good. They are crafted more like spring rolls than eggs rolls though. The pho chin, Bo vien was also good. My dad thought the house friend rice was just okay. We'd likely order again

Shannon D.

Yelp
If I could this place a zero I would. Horrible server on behalf of the restaurant. Server and management. Food came out. Broth was super salty. Had to wave the waitress down, explained that the broth was salty. She left came back explaining that the broth was preset. They can't make broth from scratch. We asked the server for nothing else, to take the food off the bill. Came back with, "My manager told me we can't take it off the bill" We payed for food that was not eaten. This was wild. This place is going down hill fast. Will not be back ever.

Yelp
I've been here twice now. The food is very good. It's not my all time favorite pho in the area but it's my go-to when my favorite is closed. I highly recommend the curries as well. My only complaint is that the last time I came, we ordered Vietnamese ice coffees and when they came, the cups were less than 2/3 full and pretty much all ice. I've had lots of Vietnamese iced coffees including from here, and it's always been a full cup. I asked the waitress about it and she said that Vietnamese iced coffee is supposed to be like espresso....I know it's supposed to be strong, but its always served in the same quality as a regular iced coffee. And like I said, first time we got them here the cups were full. I suspect that they were just running low but instead of saying they were low they just decided to give us less :-/ That was off putting but otherwise I recommend this place.
google avatar

Irma B.

Yelp
I should have stuck with my gut and went to our usual Thai place in southgate. I ordered pineapple fried rice, chicken pho and pad see ew. Everything tasted so bland and flavorless. I asked for mild and could t taste a hint of spiciness. Disappointed to say the least
google avatar

MiMi N.

Yelp
Every time I order from here it's never good. They never listen to the instructions and always get my order wrong. From asking to swap out sauces for the summer rolls rolls due to peanut allergies and no nuts on my noodles. Every time I can never eat my food. Then I continue to give this place chances afterwards but the pho is always so salty. When I order this for my son he didn't even eat it and knew right away that it's ordered from a different place where I usually go to.
google avatar

Kim T.

Yelp
Get your pho here! Never had it? Great place to start. We chose #17 which seems to be the most basic and most popular. Meat and noodles were generous and the broth actually has flavor!!! Other places, it's been a miss but not here. The fun is getting to add in fresh ingredients as well as a number of sauces! Make sure you do this and slurp up all the flavor you've added in the broth while eating the noodles. I love the fresh basil they bring as well as the bean sprouts. If you don't know what the sauces are, they can give you a run downF just watch out for spice! They have more than pho and I will be happy to try to one of the many dishes they offer but for now, pho is where it's at. *If you come prime time and it's busy, you may have a small wait for waiter to come get your order but the food came quick! Plus a busy restaurant is a good sign*

Yelp
The Mrs. and I have tried a few different places in the general Metro Detroit area and this is the one we always tend to go back to. Simple menu with a good number of options, comfortable enough atmosphere and the service has always been fast and friendly for us. Today's dining experience was no different. My wife is currently navigating some diet restrictions and they were more than accommodating to her every need with nothing short of great patience and a hospitable smile. I generally get the pho Tai, chin (with brisket) and it's always amazing. The broth is nice and mellow, not overpowering like some of the other establishments we've tried. Everything always comes out hot and fresh and without too long of a wait unless they are EXTREMELY busy and even in those instances that we've been there for, it has never been unreasonable to us. While it may not be the closest restaurant for this type of cuisine, the food and service make it more than worth the short drive for us. Best pho in the immediate area I can say with the utmost of confidence.

Betty R.

Yelp
this place used to be my go-to pho restaurant. the service is getting worse and the food quality is declining as well. pho crab detroit is way better or even the pho place in the same plaza as this place.
google avatar

Enjoli M.

Yelp
This broth alone was amazing! I've had Pho from a few different spots, and wow! I got the seafood Pho and my favorite protein was the crab (it's imitation but it adds a nice sweetness and kicks up the flavor). The only thing I didn't like was the squid as it was a bit chewy. As I'm writing this, I want more Pho...this broth! I got takeout because of Covid, and they packaged everything very nicely and securely.
google avatar

Cecily W.

Yelp
Came here for a week day lunch, and it was not crowded at all. They have a lot of options on the menu. I got the veggie curry, and hot as spicy level. The portion is pretty generous, and I only finished probably half it. It was not that hot, but if you finish the whole thing at one session, maybe it will feel differently by the end. My friends are fans of pad thai here.
google avatar

Virginia L.

Yelp
Local pho restaurant that offers a variety of noodle, fried rice, classic Viet dishes. The soup could be more flavorful, amount of pho entree seemed a little on the scarce side compared to other noodle places. The bean sprouts and lime on the side were a bit dried and soggy. I did enjoy the Iced Viet Coffee though, it was a good balance of coffee, condensed milk and ice. The spring rolls didn't really stand out besides having the generic crunch. I have to admit the customer service was decent, just the food and entrees did not leave a memorable impression. Might I suggest just a more thorough cleanup of the dining areas before seating new customers. I'll probs come back again to try some different entrees.

Yelp
I'd say this is one of my favorite restaurants to get pho from. They have such an extensive menu. The pho: Well seasoned. The sliced beef are pho-resh and tender. Good portions. They don't cheap out on quantity. Their Thai food selection is pretty good. I tried the potato curry and it was delicious! Bubble tea is well-priced and good too! Definitely recommend!
google avatar

Idnarb M.

Yelp
This is the best PHO I have had in the metro area. It is consistent and they do not disappoint. The broth is seasoned to perfection. I order the Vegan Pho without tofu. EXCELLENT. It is packaged well and everything is incredibly fresh.

Yelp
This spot is probably the go to spot for me, my friends and my family for proper Vietnamese food. Whenever were in the area and we're coming to see familiar faces, we come here to break bread. Well not necessarily break bread, Asians don't break bread, but here we share fresh rolls. Yes, the fresh rolls here are pretty gosh darn good. Their peanut sauce is very good as well. I am a very big fan of pork, so I always order the bunbohue. Spicy pork base soup that's literally a cure all and a comfort food for yours truly. There's other condiments that you can put on your soup to jazz it up as well. The bean sprouts, basil, jalapeño peppers, as well as other sauces are available on your table. We usually munch on the bean sprouts while waiting for the food to arrive. Anyways, I love coming to this restaurant. The service is great, the price is on point and the food is two thumbs up. Plus, it's the go to place for me and my north of Detroit friends.

Yelp
I first tried this place earlier this year when I accidentally sent an order to the wrong restaurant, which was really embarrassing, but I'm glad it happened because it turned out better than my usual place. The atmosphere is nice, very clean and warm feeling. The service was quick and friendly. I eat here frequently now because they have much more reasonable prices compared to other Vietnamese restaurants in the area, and seemed to even taste better. I really love their gon & their chin pho (I'm sure their others are good too, these are just the ones I stick with), their pad Thai, and their crispy rolls.
google avatar

Cindy D.

Yelp
Love this place wish I could go more often. The soups are amazing and the sprouts are so crunchy and yummy mixed in your soup. Nice staff.

Yelp
I'm not quite ready to call it yet, but i think this might be the best pho in madison heights. I have enjoyed thang long a lot and thuy tran as well. Que Huong does a great job also, but is overshadowed by how good their banh mi is. Pho Tai is huge. It is really a massive space with tons of tables. Even when there's 20-30 people in there, you can have a private conversation. Or if you're solo, you can just slurp on your pho broth by yourself without being bothered. It's slightly salty but not overpowering, the bowls are a very good value, but it feels incredibly nutritious. This is probably where you want to come to pick up pho when you're getting over sickness - and have some extra for the next day. Couple the great value with fast and friendly service and it's a real winner. I can't comment on the thai food as I did not try any - but was very impressed with my pho - and I'm going back for more.

Yelp
I've been craving pho forever and read a few reviews about the quality of the broth and level of care. I was beyond happy to order an extra large brisket and tendon pho with extra bean sprouts. They were out of my first few choices, but I wasn't disappointed. All items, rice noodles and veggies and sauces were packed separately from the broth. The broth was hot and so flavorful. I look forward to getting another big, steaming bowl of pho soon!

Yelp
I've been to almost every pho restaurant in metro Detroit, and this is hands down the best one. They're consistently tasty, prices have never changed, the service is quick and absolutely respectful. I would not recommend anywhere else if you're looking for pho or Thai food!
