The Best Vietnamese Restaurants in New Orleans | Eater New Orleans

"Pho Tau Bay is a family affair, with roots that reach back to Saigon in the 1960s when the family patriarch owned restaurants there. Spiced beef stew is a specialty here, served over rice noodles or warm French bread, but all the usual suspects are represented on the menu. There are also lots of good vegetarian dishes, a bonus." - Beth D’Addono

Be sure to enter “Pho Tau Bay Ltt Restaurant” when you look them up, not just “Pho Tau Bay”, there are a few other restaurants with similar names, and only this one includes “Ltt.” I know what LLC stands for, but to this day, I still have no idea what Ltt means… and forgot to ask. Need-to-know tips for your first visit: -If you pay cash, leave your tip on the table. -If you pay credit card, they will automatically add a 15% tip to your total (minimum $3), including on to-go orders. -Prices are subject to change without notice. I came here on Saturday, 7/19, on a mission for good Bánh Cuốn, thanks to my sister’s strong recommendation. According to her, this is the only place she likes to eat it, her favorite, hands down. My son and I arrived just before 12:30pm and were seated right away. Since we already knew what we wanted, we ordered without needing the menu, $35 (same price $17.50 each) total paid with cash: Two Bánh Cuốn Đặc Biệt, one with everything (including pork floss) for my son, and one without the floss for me. I tend to avoid the usual thịt chà bông since most places don’t season it well; I have a go-to spot in San Jose just for that alone. The food came out quickly, though it was a bit colder than I prefer. They serve their rice sheets folded flat, not rolled, a style choice that can spark debate, depending on which region of Vietnam you ask. For the record, “cuốn” literally means “coil” or “roll,” but it’s a hill I’m not dying on. The rice sheets were thinner than the ones we later tried at Bánh Cuốn Thanh Trì. No bells and whistles here, just classic OG bánh cuốn with chả lụan and chả chiên. (Both were sliced super thin, only 3 slices each. I personally preferred the chả chiên for its added flavor.) The dried shallots were reasonable in portion, but the herb plate (bean sprouts, cucumber, and basil) was smaller than what you’d typically expect. Their sweet fish sauce came in a super shallow, tiny dish, so we asked for more. The filling was standard: ground pork and wood ear mushroom, nothing fancy but traditional. This is a small, family-run spot, with a really warm, down-to-earth vibe. If you speak Vietnamese, they’re even more talkative, They were super friendly and funny with us once we started chatting. From what I observed, they seem to know many of their regulars by name and face. Located in a shared strip plaza, so parking can be tight, but available.

Lived in OC all my life and thought I’ve been to all the restaurants here. But today was an eye opener. It’s a Pho restaurant but has the best bánh cuốn in town. Made fresh and puts all the other bánh cuốn restaurant to shame.

Andy Mai

Google
This is a supposed to be an authentic Pho restaurant that was originally from Saigon, Vietnam. They are famous with their Pho and Banh Uot. We found the Pho was OK, not too bad but not a wow using the original Vietnamese pho standards. The Banh Uot was really good. The portion was not as much as other places but the taste was better. The restaurant is quite large and has many inside seats. Plenty of parking spaces. This is a handicap friendly facility.

Google
Banh Cuon a must & chè hạt sen! Dont know why the name of pho resturant. only come here for Banh cuon.

Google
Horrible service!!!!! I ordered 2 plates to go. A woman asked me to come by 2:45 pm. There was an accident close to their place so was got there @ 2:47. The man had called at 2:36 questioning when I would be there. I told him I was close but got delayed due to the accident. He raised his voice and complained that he couldn’t close his register because of me. His tone was condescending and angry. If a family owned restaurant complains when guest is 2 minutes late due to uncontrollable situations, they don’t deserve my business. Bye forever…

One of the best and freshest Banh Cuon place I have ever been! It literally melt in your mouth.

Google
Banh cuon was top notch, the restaurant's reputation speaks for itself in the authentic taste of its food.

Great place for pho, but my favorite is their Banh cuon

Yelp
Pho Tau Bay Ltt is a hidden gem for anyone craving authentic banh cuon. I always go for the dac biet (special), which features incredibly thin and silky rice rolls filled with wood ear mushrooms and ground pork. They're topped with fried shallots and pork floss, just as they should be. On the side, you'll find a fresh mix of blanched bean sprouts, slivers of cucumber, mint, and cilantro, adding a refreshing crunch to balance the dish. This family-run hole-in-the-wall might not win points for ambiance--it's located in a dated strip mall with a small parking lot that fills up fast. The service is straightforward: they'll bring you your food and your check, and that's about it. But the food more than makes up for it. I came for a quick bite on a Sunday around 11 AM. I was seated immediately and ordered the banh uot dac biet. The food arrived quickly, looking as delicious as it tasted. I polished off my plate in no time and left feeling satisfied and impressed by the quality. Pho Tau Bay Ltt serves some of the best banh cuon I've had, and I'll definitely be back.

Yelp
15% credit card charge. 5g cents for tap water. $1 for a glass of very diluted tea. 5 slices of cold and thin chả lụa. Salty nước chấm. This place is ripping off their customers. We will never be back.
google avatar

Randy T.

Yelp
Amazing tasting Pho here. We got the most expensive Pho selection because they currently have a promotion where our second bowl of Pho only costed $1! Lastly, they have free soda can promotional for each bowl of Pho!

Yelp
This was my second time in, and I think now I can truly appreciate what an outstanding meal Pho Tau Bay delivers. The pho broth was flavorful with an incredibly light touch. Meats were delicious, nicely varied, and plentiful. Absolutely loved the rice noodles - maybe the best I've ever had. Terrific meal, light yet hearty, all served in a friendly family atmosphere. Go out of your way for this local gem.

Yelp
So I rushed to my normal place for banh cuon. I arrived at 3:35 pm but the owner wouldn't let me in because they close at 4:00 pm. :( I sat in the car & searched Yelp got a good banh cuốn place nearby and this restaurant turned up. So the banh cuốn was good, but the fish sauce (nuoc cham) was really salty. And they don't give much. I ordered a large and it came with 5 super thin rice rolls. The shredded pork floss went well with that dish. The Inside of the restaurant is very dated and it is not in a best area. Not sure if I would return.
google avatar

Vanessa D.

Yelp
Their banh uot is very thin and the portion is decent. In the menu, they gave instruction how to tip the restaurant especially when all they did was to bring out the food to the table. When you ordered drink, no refill! You're paying for a one time service charge of hot tea, or ice tea in a small cup. 15% is automatically added to your check for tip when paying with a credit card. cash for tip is expected to put in the table. It's a hole in the wall type of restaurant with smokers outside which you can smell once anyone enter or exit.

Tony N.

Yelp
Portions are very small ordered number 3 with pork floss got the order and no pork floss in my order and they charged said 15% fee but charged me 25% place is no good.

Michael N.

Yelp
Take so long for bánh cuốn more than half an hour. I order bánh ướt comes out bánh cuốn.

Yelp
This is the only place to eat if you are ever craving banh cuon. I always get the dach biet, or special, The rice rolls are super thin & silky and filled with wood ear mushrooms and ground pork. They have the mandatory fried shallots on top with pork floss. It comes with a side of blanched bean sprouts with slivers of cucumber, mint & cilantro sprinkled in. This is a family run business, and is a total hole in the wall. It's dated and in a small parking lot that can get full. Don't expect great service if you're dining in. They'll bring you your food and a check. But definitely expect great banh cuon here.

Yelp
Banh cuốn is so good, like viet nam at Sài gòn. I love this. they make hot rice rolls, so yumyp
google avatar

Yelp
Came for a quick bite on a Sunday at 11am. Seated right away and ordered the Banh uot dac viet. Straight forward service so don't expect anything above that. Food came out quick and looked tasty. Gobbled it down rather quick and I'll have to admit that I was very happy with the quality of the entree. Delicious! Would come back.

Yelp
Legit real Vietnamese , pho, no frills in parking lot mixed with the Hispanic community. Much love. When you go into a pho joint, and even though you're Chinese in the Asian ethnicity, you get a bit nervous when the patrons and staff stare at you. But I smile and stare back cuz I know when they don't speak English well, it's always the most legit. Not gonna compare to Vietnam especially the north where you ain't gonna see hoisin or sriracha, and pho is not a big deal there, normally eat that for breakfast so good and small bowls I would do it always every morning. But there Santa Ana, pretty much as good as it gets for amurika! Banh cuon and cafe su da on point as well!
google avatar

Johnny N.

Yelp
A total hidden gem in Santa Ana! My family comes here every so often and I just have to tag along every time! It's pretty well hidden behind a donut shop, but you should be able to find it pretty easily. There's a good amount of parking, even for a Sunday morning. Inside, you'll pretty much be able to seat yourself and the waiter will take your order. They're pretty fast, and straightforward, just like any other Vietnamese place. I got the Bánh Cuốn plate, which was filled almost entirely with the rice rolls filled with pork and mushroom. It went great with the dipping sauce and bean sprouts, and the ham was definitely a great touch. I just wish the portions were a bit bigger, considering the price of over $10.

Yelp
Mua pickup ma trả bằng thẻ thì tiệm tự động thêm 15% tip , Người bán hàng còn trách tôi lúc order tại sao không hỏi về việc trả bằng thẻ hay là bằng tiền mặt! Nhà hàng khu Bolsa mọc ra như nấm bởi vậy mới biết tại sao tiệm này vắng hoe khách lúc giờ ăn trưa business như vầy thì toi sẽ khong bao gio trở lại nữa i will NEVER come back to this restaurant!!!!

Yelp
Craving quick pho and was near the area so decided to try out this place! I got typical order of a Small Pho Tai Nam Sach. We received the veggies on the side and it was actually my first time trying Thai Basil with my meal (loved it!). Enjoyed the pieces in the pho, but the broth could've been more flavorful. There are a lot of better looking options on the menu and I don't think I'd return for the pho here. Service was amazing!!
google avatar

Yelp
The poor reviews on this restaurant completely disappoint me fellow Yelpers. LTT is one of the most magnificent holes in the wall. Our family has become regulars at this restaurant, due to having some of the best banh cuon in southern california. Stuffed, fresh bean sprouts, does super well when taken out (i bring it back to san diego with me). Sorry we dont order too much else because why would you need to? Viet coffee, fresh squeezed OJ, thai tea are great too I guess to be a little bit more objective, small caveat could include the more traditional Vietnamese atmosphere, and it's not the most fancy place. It's a family run vietnamese restaurant and you get what you expect. The servers know us and generally get orders out in a reasonable time. It's a pay at the front situation most of the time.
google avatar

Yelp
Parking is spacious. The food is OK. The ambience quiet. The service is nice and a price is reasonable.

Yelp
Was invited to lunch by my relatives, and everyone ordered the banh cuon(which apparently is the item to get). It was delicious and service was very quick. Definitely feels like a slightly larger mom and pop place, I would definitely come here again!
google avatar

Lisa L.

Yelp
First time trying Pho Tau Bay after seeing it on my friends IG. I decided to go with the Special which was banh cuon served with the shredded pork on top served with veggies and nuoc mam on the side. I thought it was pretty good and balanced out the rice rolls perfectly Honorable Mentions: -Small parking lot -For $1 more you can get the "Large" portion
google avatar

Jackie P.

Yelp
The best rice crepes you can find in OC. Don't go there for pho. Go there for the rice crepes (Vietnamese bánh cuốn)
google avatar

Iris D.

Yelp
Hands down one of the best Banh cuon places I've had. This is my go to spot for Banh cuon. I usually do take out, I've eaten here once. It's a hole in the wall, interior is a little dated, they prefer cash payment as they do charge extra for card payment. It does get busy here so if you do take out orders, make sure to call in advance
google avatar

Katie K.

Yelp
The best banh cuon in town, tried so many places but this one is still the best and the freshest one so far

Tony T.

Yelp
Bánh cuốn is good but the portion is small despite my order for the large one. The bánh cuốn that said to be handmade here is less oily in comparison to many bánh cuốn places in Little Saigon, and that is good. The dish has no traditional "bánh tôm or bánh cống " to go with, and this needs to be improved!
google avatar

Andy P.

Yelp
This was once my favorite place for Banh Cuon (Rice Sheet Rolls). Sadly, the financial aspect of it altered the taste buds to the point of no return. Their Banh Cuon is delicious, no questions about it. There may be some variations here and there with temperatures and freshness but overall, good. Recently, I placed a pickup order for 4 portions and a coffee. The cashier, who was mildly annoyed for whatever reason, summed up the total and gave us the bill. Being a frequent customer, I know for a fact that they accept credit cards. With the order being over $50, credit card wouldn't be an issue. The guy straight up said they don't ever accept credit cards. I had to tell him that they did in the past and inquired what changed. He then changed his tone and said we can take your card but "have" to include a 15% tip to the bill. Merchant interchange fees for a bill as such does not cost 15%!!! Does this mean that people who pay cash for pickup does not have to tip? At the moment, we just paid it. But as we are driving home and shared the meal with the family... food started to taste bitter because of the incident. No great tasting food can right such experience. We concluded that while times are hard, tactics as such is pushing beyond boundaries. We shared this with our families and now, I want to share with the Yelp communities as well. Rule of thumb: Bring cash to these places and you won't be placed in such awkward scenarios. Even so, you are subjected to their sub-par service which is already a known issue. I hope this message reaches the owner and, hopefully, they re-evaluate business ethics/operations. Until then, we will dine elsewhere.
google avatar

David M.

Yelp
My family and I have been here since we came to American in 1986. This is arguably, my dad's favorite pho place in the US to dine out. He always gets his briskets, rare steak, and tripe along with the fatty broth and vinegar onion slices. I enjoy their pho also their banh cuon, which has always been my favorite to get here. Overall, the food is excellent and affordable. The place is a little outdated and needs some improvement. Food comes really fast. We usually go here before 9am so its never really crowded at those times. The service is typical of most Viet restaurants, a little rude and not too attentive. But that's a given. If you love pho and banh cuon, come here.
google avatar

Rick L.

Yelp
Bánh cuốn, the cure for sadness, breakups, procrastination, and folding clothes! Forget drugs, shrinks, religion or alcohol. Frankly, I found it to help with all aspects of life. Order a plate of bánh cuốn, take photos or not, and dive right in. Instantly all worries will simply float away. Your friends got problems? Bring them bánh cuốn. Your family is upset with you? Bring them bánh cuốn. Your dog ate your homework? Bring your teacher bánh cuốn. Eat bánh cuốn and be merry.
google avatar

Charles N.

Yelp
If you crave bánh cuốn, come here. It has been the best banh cuon place for years until recently when Banh Cuon Thanh Tri opened. However, the taste here is different since it has thịt ruốc on top. There's also ca cuon that you can put into your fish sauce for that poignant taste. The place is definitely a hole in the wall. The prices are reasonable, not terribly expensive. The service is what it is. For Thinsulin fans, there's not many green light options.

Mi H.

Yelp
First time here because some friends recommended the place. It really is a hole in the wall but the food is surprisingly good! Apparently, they were well known in Vietnam before they came to the US. We really enjoyed the special banh cuon. It came with freshly made and rolled rice sheets filled with delicious flavorful meat and mushroom. There is also the plain rice roll option. Both were topped with crispy caramelized onions, cha lua, cha bong, and a heaping portion of blanched beansprouts, fresh basil and cilantro. The rice roll portion was enough for a not too hungry stomach. The service was quick and friendly. I will definitely recommend it to the family and will come back!
google avatar

Colin R.

Yelp
The friends took me here claiming it was the best rice paper joint in SoCal. Big expectations to live up to. But all well worth it. I had the banh uot (no meat) and drowned it liberally with the sauce. So good! Had a sampling of the pho also which was very tasty. Gonna come back next time I'm in OC. Oh and have to remember to have sufficient cash on me (they don't take credit cards). But that should be easy -- prices are very reasonable.

Yelp
This place is awesome! Family owned, good food, great ambiance. Pho was amazing! Get over here!!!

Yelp
Không bao giờ ghé nữa mặc dù bánh cuốn ngon Chỉ nhạn tiền mặt mà còn tính phần trâm tip ép buộc

Caroline D.

Yelp
The pho and banh cuon are legit. They've set my bar to judge all pho joints - gotta go for the gau,
google avatar

Vy D.

Yelp
I was hanging out with my friends for a Sunday breakfast. The place is a typical tradition Pho restaurant. The place name is Pho but their Steamed Pork Roll (Banh cuon) is the best I have so far in the area. I rate Pho: 3 stars Steamed Pork Roll (Banh cuon): 5 stars! The best I have so far!! Overall: 3 stars! It's a good place to eat Steamed Pork Roll when you craving for it.

Kevin M.

Yelp
I've been going here since I was 6 years old I am now 15 am it is still the best always and forever great meals
google avatar

Quyen T.

Yelp
This place is great. I love their pho and banh uot. Pho has that beefy broth that you can smell and taste. I always have to make a visit here whenever I'm down in LA (from the Bay Area). The portion has definitely gotten smaller and pricing went up a whole lot due to inflation so I completely understand. I haven't been here since the beginning of the pandemic.
google avatar

Kat G.

Yelp
I decided to take my mom and baby to this restaurant because they have 2 meals that will satisfy my cravings (bánh cuốn) and satisfy my boss baby (phở). I enjoyed my bánh cuốn đặc biệt, however, i thought they weren't even, they were more like half bánh ướt and half bánh cuốn, because it seems like all the fillings are in the middle and nothing in the outer layer...maybe I misread the menu? Lol after all, still pretty good. Next time I gotta ask for fresh chili pepper for nuoc mam, it was kinda bland otherwise. I also tried my baby's pho, definitely interested taste, it was very "gingery". It wasn't bad but it could use a less ginger. Boss baby didn't mind and finished her whole bowl. Please bring cash or expect to pay extra 15% to use your credit card. I will definitely be back again.

Ellie D.

Yelp
Good banh cuon/ banh uot, but too pricey. The portion is small so you won't get full Nuoc mam was a bit salty for me

Hana N.

Yelp
My worker and I are very disappoint when we ordered 2 special banh cuon set. The sauce is too salty. It is not special, very simple. I don't teaste any thing. This is the first try also be the last.
google avatar

Tanya L.

Yelp
Customer service is terrible, the servers are very impolite and yelled at customers when answering the questions. Food is too bad, ruining my appetite for the whole day.
google avatar

Mai D.

Yelp
Best bánh cuốn around. Been coming here for years with my family, and I don't bother going anywhere else for bánh cuốn.
google avatar

Vivian D.

Yelp
My go to for banh cuon in Little Saigon. Maybe it's inflation but my to-go seemed kinda light for the price. I guess I'll have to order the large portion next time. Still solid!
google avatar

Paul N.

Yelp
Best Pho I've had in awhile ! They also has banh uot which is like a Vietnamese thin pancake wrapper that is made with rice noodle sheets typically with ground meat and shiitake mushrooms inside.. oh so good with steamed bean sprouts and fish sauce!! Love the new big plates here that goes well with ch bong, which is dehydrated shredded pork or chicken which is amazing! Anyway this place is very Vietnamese oriented traditionally based from a famous Vietnamese restaurant in South Vietnam (Saigon District). Anyways, Mondays they are closed and during weekdays 8-6pm and Sat Sunday 8-4pm
google avatar

Tiffany D.

Yelp
Amazing thinly bánh cuốn & tasty highly recommended for us whom love amazing thinly banh cuon
google avatar

Ehsan S.

Yelp
I went there at 11:07am on 7/10/22 to pick up a $52 carryout order. On their website they said that they accept credit card but when I arrived they said cash only. I simply restated their policy but a skinny short guy RUDELY said that we ONLY accept cash or you HAVE TO PAY 15% GRATUITY or you can get out. Furthermore, an older guy (assuming that he is the owner) verified the other guy and even declined to take my $40 cash and chathing my creditcard$12. THESE PEOPLE ARE DOING THIS TO NOT PAY SALES TAX AND THAT IS AGAINST THE CALIFORNIA and US LAW and shouldbe reportedto state authorities...In my 23 years of living in America, I have never been treated in this manner and this hurts even more since my wife is Vietnamese. This establishment clearly doesn't deserve our business and I would NEVER recommend them to anyone.
google avatar

Yelp
A little hole in the wall for Ban Cuon (rice rolls)! [ Service ] Decided to try this restaurant for lunch on Sunday. I was pretty surprised by how many people were in the restaurant, since the location was kind of obscure in a small plaza with a small parking lot. They make their food fairly quickly after you order, especially if you order pho! [ Food ] 1. Ban Cuon Dac Biet (Rice rolls w/ Meat inside & Dry pork topping) $8ish for Large-- highly recommend this! Since the restaurant is known for their Ban Cuon, I would suggest sharing a large (around 5 rows) with your friends. The dish comes with vietnamese sausages on the side and some cooked bean sprouts. You usually eat it with fish sauce, but I like putting chili paste in the fish sauce to give it a kick. 2. Beef/brisket Pho $6 for small -- pretty decent for pho. Watch out for the hot soup! They make it extra hot here compared to other pho places. The only concern I had were the brisket pieces being extra extra fat. I had to throw out half of each piece of meat because it was straight fat.
google avatar

Maryan N.

Yelp
This restaurant is my family's go-to place for banh cuon. Not too sure how the pho is, but the banh cuon is always consistently good. I usually order the Banh Cuon Dac Biet, which is a steamed rice rolls stuffed with ground pork and mushrooms with cha lua (Vietnamese pork meatloaf) with beansprouts, cucumbers, fried onions and fish sauce on the side. This place is definitely a hole-in-the-wall type of restaurant, but I would say they serve the best banh cuon in Orange County. There's always a wait when I go on the weekends around lunch time, but the wait goes by pretty fast.
google avatar

Allie D.

Yelp
I've been on a banh cuon kick as of late and have not been satisfied with Banh Cuon Luu Luyen (see my previous review) or Banh Cuon Tay Ho's chain (the rice fluor crepes were too thick). So my boss recommended Pho Tau Bay and I think I've converted. Granted, the location isn't in the mecca of Vietnamese food (Westminster/Bolsa) so you don't feel like your in the hub of the Viet community but coming here for lunch on a Tuesday was quick and fast as opposed to the weekend crowd waiting for a table. I ordered a large Banh Cuon Nhan Thit (flour rice crepe filled with meat, mushrooms and onions; came with 5 slices of jambon and steamed cold beansprouts on the side). Uh-Maze-Balls. The crepe was transparent and see-through, you could see the filling (unlike other banh cuon places with thick crepes and little filling). Soft and silky, it paired nicely with the fried onions and savory filling. Great place if you're in the area and want viet food. Buh-bye, other mediocre banh cuon establishments!
