These Were Twin Cities Food Writers’ Go-To Comfort Meals at Local Restaurants in 2023 | Eater Twin Cities

"When I needed to feel cozy, I found myself at Pho Tau Bay a lot: it's one of my favorite local pho joints, a nice place to bring a book and slurp or meet pals for lunch, with great broth and a no-frills atmosphere that lets me dive face-first into a bowl of soup or chomp on spring rolls solo and unbothered." - Eater Staff

Google
I have been coming to this establishment since I started working around here 3 years ago and I can tell you the service is fast! The food is great, the broth is deep in flavor, and they always load up the meat! The Vietnamese coffee is especially strong

Kathryn M.

Google
CASH ONLY Enjoyed my pho, generous portions of meat (#13) but the broth could have been more full bodied, needed to add a lot of extra sauce to fill out the flavor. Spring rolls were a disappointment, not much flavor and sauce was runny. Enjoyable as a standard pho place but nothing to write home about. Had to waive down waiter several times to get all our food. Signs about cash only weren't very clear.

Tina N.

Google
The food here is a good staple. The pho ap chau (stir fry pho noodles). This is our favorite dish here. (Thank me later. ) Definitely a solid vietnamese restaurant that needs to be on your rotation!

Jenny M.

Google
Deliciously fresh ingredients and humongous portions! The oxtail soup was clear and the meat was soft, tender, and juicy. The lemongrass chicken wasn’t overly salty and paired so well with the crispy big egg roll. Food came out quickly, as well. Highly recommend this restaurant!

Google
5/5 ⭐️ Delicious authentic Vietnamese food! Portions are very generous and definitely worth the price. Fresh ingredients, great flavors, and friendly service. I’ll be coming back again!

Google
Buy two Chicken noddles soup for almost 40 dollars. The smell of unwashed chicken. The fatal noddles and the woman who attends very rude. First and last time I visit this place, 9/28/2025.

Google
I loved it!!!! The seasoning was on point, loved the noodles and the tender meat. I cannot wait to come back. Big portions and very acceptable price, I got a bit scared when I saw only cash but they took my card.

Google
Staff is rude, no manners, extremely poor service. Messed up our order. Didn't bring the waters, bathrooms are smelly and disgusting. They stare while you eat as if they did something to your food. Won't be going anymore.

Yelp
I had veggies/tofu/wide rice noodles in a sauce. Pretty tasty, but a bit bland. See my previous review. It's in a kinda cool moderne building with a curved wall. They still don't seem to want to use their patio area.

Yelp
I've been passing this place for a solid 12 years now, silently wondering, "How are they still here?" Especially after the pandemic? "Seriously, how?!" So, I hopped onto Yelp, scrolling through reviews while sitting in what appeared to be a post-lunch, pre-cleaning disaster zone. That's when I stumbled upon the health violations. My foodie friend, who'd recently had a brief (or was it?) tango with food poisoning from another hot sauce incident, nearly choked on air when I read them aloud. "Wait, what?!" he sputtered, eyes wide. "I hope I don't get food poisoning." My friend announced he felt utterly miserable. My immediate, brilliant solution? "Want pho?" He practically levitated. Now, mind you, this is the same person who called in sick to work that day. Pho-get about it! At first, it was a joke, but then I thought, "Yeah, a little vermicelli sounds pretty good." Normally, we'd trek to Pho Nominal in Cupertino/Sunnyvale or that trusty spot off Bascom near the library. But I was in no mood for that expedition. So, I proposed, "How about that place off Keys?" And off we went. This is where the saga truly began. They were in the middle of unloading a delivery from a van. It was then I realized just how tiny this establishment is. We stood there awkwardly, like lost puppies, and asked, "Are you open?" because the place was deserted. After a quick scan, I saw that most of the tables were... dirty. Over on the side, a table groaned under a mountain of dirty, stacked dishes. We settled ourselves at a table that hadn't seen a wipe-down. When I gently (and probably optimistically) asked for it to be cleaned, the lady sighed. A deep, weary sigh, like I'd just asked her to solve world peace. Then she pointed to another dirty table and said, "How about this one?" Now, I've always taken cultural nuances with a grain of salt; sometimes other languages can just sound saucy to my Western ears. My nail lady used to sound like she was cussing me out, and it turned out she was just asking if I wanted gel or regular polish. So, I gave her the benefit of the doubt, thinking perhaps she'd just realized the entire dining room was a biohazard. However, she only cleaned that one table, and then took our order. Her English wasn't the strongest, so we resorted to ordering by the menu's letter-and-number system. I believe he got a B1, and I went for a B5. The price for chicken vermicelli was the same as seafood, so I decided to brave the shrimp. Gotta say, the shrimp was good - big, plump prawns. Our food arrived surprisingly fast, and my vermicelli was decent, with about five of those good prawns. Then, out of the corner of my eye, I saw the cook emerge from the kitchen holding... a single shrimp on a fork. Just one. I don't know why, but it was just so odd. The vermicelli had very little lettuce and a mountain of noodles. As we ate, I continued my casual environmental survey. I noticed the ladies up front eating behind the counter, which, hey, everyone's gotta eat. Then, my eyes landed on the dreaded "CASH ONLY" sign. Cash-only places always make me raise an eyebrow like The Rock. My mind immediately went to the existential question: "Do I have cash?" Thank goodness for my "rainy day" stash, you know, the hidden emergency money you only remember when faced with a cash-only culinary crisis. My friend ordered a taro shake, and the communication there was... a bit off. When it finally arrived, it was ridiculously sweet. I was convinced they'd used a pure sugar powder or syrup. We tried to ask what they used, but she genuinely couldn't understand. It was at this point that I officially decided: This place is not making it onto my "Pho List." I wasn't impressed, and frankly, I'd rather just drive further for the places we already know and love. I've even been to a place in Little Saigon before, and while I had higher expectations for that one too, it was still better than this. I'm not hard to please, it's just... I know my pho. Anyway, this is a definite "I will not be returning" joint. So, no updates from me. After seeing the health violations (which, yes, you can peek right here on Yelp, bless this platform), I genuinely do not understand how they survived the pandemic. I can confirm that the cleanliness level of the tables and floor was non-existent, which, naturally, makes one wonder what the kitchen looks like. All in all, 48 hours later, I did not get food poisoning, which is a silver lining, I guess.

Yelp
Ok place but one stop only for me..... Wife wanted crab legs in the fish pho No more Wife wanted fillet mignon in the broth 2nd choice- same no more Deep fried egg rolls were good but not that good. The bbq beef was great in the wonton soup and you do get a large portion. The place I'm sorry to say isn't that clean. It's dark inside and I was full but would not go back.

Yelp
Love coming to Pho Tau Bay whenever we're in the area. They're not super busy during weekday lunch, and service is quick and attentive. I really like their pho with brisket, flank, tendon and tripe, and their vermicelli bowl with grilled chicken and egg rolls. Last lunch with my friend, we 38$ all in for pho, a vermicelli bowl and diet coke.
google avatar

Jill M.

Yelp
Pho Tau Bay is our favorite in-neighborhood pho place. They are open late (10pm/11pm) depending on the day. They have the best choemein/chowfun and love the variety of noodles you can choose from.
google avatar

Denise L.

Yelp
Really good pho! My friend had wanted to order from here as they have bun bo hue with all the fixings and they really enjoyed it. I had the filet mignon pho tai (only $1 more than pho tai) and the meat was super tender. The amount of noodles they give was more than enough for me, as I couldn't finish my bowl and I normally do! The spring roll was just okay, the pork was very dry and no peanut sauce as a dipping sauce.

Nguyen H.

Yelp
Where's my sauce? This is not the first time they've been sneaky about giving out their sauce for the Hu Tieu Anh Dao. When asked for an extra cup of sauce ($2 more), they never did. Also, they cut down to one shrimp per portion. What a ripoff for a meal of $20!!! Won't ever come back!!!!
google avatar

Danae L.

Yelp
This place has improved since I last visited many years ago. Broth has been more savory than other spots I frequent at in the east bay. They try to keep their prices low, hence cash only.

Lucas L.

Yelp
Nice place to eat Vietnamese food. Try the noodle, it has a very good taste. The rice with BBQ pork is also delicious

Yadira M.

Yelp
Came to eat pho here with my son after acouple years of not coming for the bad service and I regret it because the food had hair !!! Very unsanitary and unprofessional. Will not be coming back just EW
google avatar

Yelp
I absolutely love this place. I grew up going here with my dad and sister. We love the staff. You get a huge bowl with tons of meat for the price. Just know that it is cash only / cash preferred (I believe). Don't skip out on the shrimp spring rolls, they're my favorite!!

Lucerito C.

Yelp
My go to spot for pho, best in San Jose. I have been Coming here for years and always recommend this place to friends and family.
google avatar

Yelp
Make sure you get the receipt for your order. They give you tea without asking you what do you want to drink. Then charge you for it.
google avatar

Maya K.

Yelp
Doordash review: Great food! The rolls arrived still crunchy with plenty of veggies with a sweet fish sauce. Definitely would order again. The seafood soup noodle was light and satisfying. When i fridged my leftover broth, it coagulated-- so you know its the good stuff! Highly recommend.

Yelp
Today, I wanted to get some Phở Bò in the South Bay Area. But not just any Phở, I wanted Phở with Giò Cháo Quẩy or Youtiao. And I saw there was Phở Đuôi Bò available, so I had to get it. This is the traditional way, I actually prefer it this way. Giò Cháo Quẩy is usually served with Congee or Pooridge like at Dim Sum. Some people out there sometimes call it a Doughnut. To me, it's not quite like a Churro, so I can't call it a Doughnut. I feel like Bánh Tiêu, is closer to what a Doughnut is shape, consistency, or taste wise. There's something about dunking a Giò Cháo Quẩy in the Soup, it gets me eveytime. I have some personal history with Phở Tàu Bay. It's been here forever, the other location was on Silver Creek Rd. and Senter Rd. I'm familiar with the Caribbees Center. I used to go out there to get a Plane Ticket at the travel agency in '96 on the corner block. I also grew up in that neighborhood. And the only spot I know that does Giò Cháo Quẩy with Phở is here, this is one of the newer locations. This is an overseas thing, I don't see it done as much in the states, but they should carry this version more. I haven't had Phở Tàu Bay for a very long time, in 10 years, and I feel like they improved a lot since the last time. And I've had Lychee juice, but I usually don't see Longan juice, so I also got that too and it was very refreshing. It was so good. I was thinking this was going to be a 3.8-4.2 stars, but I give this 4.3 stars.

Yelp
Great food. I loved my wonton soup and Thai tea. The room temperature water had a funny aftertaste, but adding ice solved the issue. My family and I came during the afternoon, so it was empty, but it started to have more customers.

Eric T.

Yelp
The pho quality at this location has gone down significantly over the years. I remember coming here as a kid and you could taste the beef flavor in the soup but it's basically non-existent now. Pricing has gone up and quality has went down. I rather spend my money down the street at Vietnam Town. Parking in this lot with the Laundromat is horrible.

Nghia T.

Yelp
The service was great got orders written down fast, the food came out quick and gave us good food as well, and the ambiance was ok!
google avatar

Chen D.

Yelp
I ate at Pho Tau Bay today for lunch. There was two old Asian ladies work at the front. I ordered bun that took a long time to arrive. The food was OK but there was no service. I had to wave them down multiple times for a menu & water. Service really wasn't good. Prices are average comparable to other Pho restaurants nearby
google avatar

Irene L.

Yelp
Good thing about this Pho Tau Bay is that they stay open later than most pho places. I used to come here when I was in college and recently visited after so many years. This is located in the corner of Keyes and Tenth St. We got the combo fried rice and the combo special pho. The combo fried rice was okay, I think they could've sliced up the whole shrimp pierces so it's more mixed in to the rice. The combo special pho was good, they were very generous on the amount of meat in the pho. I wasn't the hugest fan of their pho broth - it's not as pure and fresh as I wanted it to be. Overall, food was okay. I have had better at other restaurants but this is a good option if you are in the downtown area looking for a late night dinner.

Shay K.

Yelp
Horrible customer service and food quality - food gave us food poisoning. The workers were also talking negatively about the customers dining (in Vietnamese). Avoid this place.

julian c.

Yelp
Love this place. Came here after a game and and ordered the number one. Foods amazing!
google avatar

Sonya E.

Yelp
We've been coming to this location for years -- quality and service is very similar to the Silver Creek location. During the most recent visit, we ordered a Pho Ga (Chicken Pho), Bun Bo Hue (Spicy Beef Noodle Soup), and Goi Cuon (Spring Rolls) to share. Never fails. Pho Tau Bay always does the trick. Make sure to ask for fresh noodles if you're ordering pho -- it makes a huge difference. This location has a private lot. It gets really busy during the lunch hour and on weekends so plan accordingly. I would say this is a good option to catch up with friends over a hearty meal. Cash only.
google avatar

Lani M.

Yelp
I tried Pho Tau Bay for the first time recently and ordered the Pho Khong Thit (20), noodle soup without meat. This was actually my first time ever trying pho without meat, and it ended up being pretty good especially for the price (which I believe was somewhere around $9-10)! The bowl was huge and the table had everything we needed, including chopsticks, spoons, and sauces. I used lots of Sriracha with my pho and loved the flavor. It was a good choice and I'd like to return and try other dishes here. In addition, I liked the location since it was in a large plaza with lots of great restaurants and places for dessert. Only downside was how crowded the parking lot was during lunchtime, but that's to be expected. If you come here, make sure you bring cash (or use their ATM) as they only accept cash payment. Good experience and look forward to coming back in then future.
google avatar

Shins T.

Yelp
-0.5 star bc it's cash only -0.5 star bc they forgot to give me my coconut drink that I ordered I ordered the Bun Bo Hue ($14.50) for take out and the whole meal was packaged very nicely. They recently changed their take out containers and I personally liked the older version better because it was wider which makes it easier to eat noodle soups. The portion size is generous and there's a good ratio of noodles to meat. I feel like the soup base is either a hit or miss in terms of saltiness. Luckily for me, todays soup was perfect and I didn't feel extremely thirsty after my meal. There's a shared parking lot with the laundromat next door and I've never had any issues finding parking.
google avatar

Yushi H.

Yelp
I stopped by this plaza around lunchtime on a weekend and it was super crowded but thankfully we were able to find a parking spot after driving around a bit. I like pho so we decided to try Pho Tau Bay. There were quite a few people here but we were able to get seated right away. I ordered #14, the Chin Nam, which was lean, well done brisket and flank. I thought it was okay. I didn't care for the broth very much. I used Sriracha to add some flavor. The service was pretty quick which I appreciated! Note: It was cash only, so I used their ATM to get cash.

Bri M.

Yelp
The pho was really good and the service was fast, the servers are really nice and helpful
google avatar

Mike Y.

Yelp
Service was horrible! Went in with family, didn't even get acknowledge. Waiting over 20 minutes, only got water, server didn't even take our order. The group of 5 before us left the restaurant for the same reason.

Biridiana M.

Yelp
I love it here! The food and service are great family friendly. The soups are bomb the fried rice is delicious W2 and 32 and 41 are my favorite i recommend A1
google avatar

Anya E.

Yelp
Cash only, they accept card with additional fees implied. Did not try the food because when we walked in it smelled like a gas station bathroom so we walked out.
google avatar

Ben B.

Yelp
The quality of the pho can be counted on. The service is fast. And on a rainy day nothing compares to a hot bowl of pho.

Johanna M.

Yelp
Let's start with the worst customer service ever. It was a cold rainy day, and I wanted some pho so I stopped at this place. The young guy at the counter greeted me while scratching his head and his face and I should of just turned around and walked out then but I really wanted pho. So, I sat down and told him my order which he got completely wrong 3 times. Bad customer service, soup was ok, nothing special. I will never be back and suggest you find another pho place because this one is super rude!!!!

Eric P.

Yelp
I found a good portion of their meatballs had grisel in them like bits that just weren't edible. Usually you find this in a rare event but it was most of them I just got tired of it and they don't cut the meatballs in half so they are too big for your mouth and the noodles just tastes like your average store bought vermicelli. Probably the worst pho I've had in San Jose
google avatar

Amber B.

Yelp
I gotta say, this is the best pho spot I've been to in a long time. I get the filet mignon pho and it's very flavorful, and the meat practically melts in your mouth. Im very particular about textures and they hit all the green boxes for me. This is my new automatic go to pho spot from now on.
google avatar

Joy L.

Yelp
Love this place. Eggrolls are a must! They are not like the others. Most of the soups are delicious, I only say most cause I havnt had all of them. Service is well service lol nothing to boast about but it's not horrible.
google avatar

CAScuba Y.

Yelp
I was thinking the other one on King but somehow went here. This one is average, soup base most likely from some form of concentrate and msg thirst started as soon as 20 minutes after meal. No long leaf (Ngo Gai) fresh herb. Fry spring roll was ok
google avatar

Mahwish S.

Yelp
I ordered take out via door dash and this pho was one of the best pho I've ever had! That broth was delicious and it came piping hot! I wasn't a big fan of the raw meat coming in a plastic bag. I'm sure they dis that because it was a thin sliced meat that cooked almost immediately after I put the hot broth on it. I had my Clorox wipes ready to wipe up the mess.
google avatar

Rattikarn W.

Yelp
Good pricing and taste good but cash only do not convenient and plus if you use their ATM machine therefore you have to pay fees like $2 something. Last night I went there the food were good but the server wasn't listen to my order well enough, so he brought me wrong order which I emphasized what exactly I wanted and he said no apologize and walked away. I was thinking not going back there since tons of same type of food all around the Bay Area. I wanted to support local businesses but I'd like to support where there do great business and with great service minds and value their customers.
google avatar

Stephanie L.

Yelp
If I could give 0 stars, I would. I was brought here by my mom. She would do laundry next door and then come and eat here. The food is good. Their chicken broth is rich and has a good flavor. I've gotten the lemongrass grilled chicken plate and it was good but the chicken chunks are big. For food, I'd rate them 4/5. Customer service is -5 because of an incident that occurred. - There is only one older lady at the front and the wait times were long even if the restaurant wasn't packed - I wasn't served water even though every other table had been given water - THE INCIDENT: I came with my cousin and her two baby daughters during lunch time. Only two other groups in the restaurant with us. - There is an older male server who was asking us if we were ready and my cousin asked for more time - Once he came back, he proceeded to take my order and I asked for beef pho and stated I didn't want tripe - My cousin interrupted and he yelled at her "PLEASE WAIT UNTIL ITS YOUR TURN" and made her uncomfortable - After he continued to take my order and I asked for no onions and he got really upset and started scolding me and yelling because I asked for no tripe and then no onions - We were taken aback at how upset he was because I asked for no onions ????? It's a restaurant. Maybe don't work there if you're gonna get upset at people asking for accommodations. It was an upsetting HORRIBLE experience and I tried getting his name but was unable to. That man single-handedly ruined the restaurant for me. Like I said, the food is good and my mom has been going for years. How unfortunate that man ruined it for me. Hopefully they see this and can tell him something because they lost a loyal customer and I hope he doesn't make others feel uncomfortable.

Janice C.

Yelp
We came here bc I was craving pho from this specific place and was greeted with horrible service from this young man who didn't seem like he wanted to be here. I actually wanted to add something to our order so I stood in front of him and he saw me but definitely ignored me. I wanted to just walk out the door but my husband kept me and just asked the waiter when he came by to bring our condiments. If it weren't for my husband, I would've left. He's rude and has no customer service at all. 1 star only bc Yelp made me
google avatar

Kathryn N.

Yelp
I doordashed the bun bo hue for ~$19. Compared to bun bo hue that I've had at other places (Tay Ho, Bun Bo Hue An Nam), this one is my favorite so far because it actually comes with huyet and a pork trotter. The thick cut of cha was also flavorful and delicious. The broth was good and it came with ot sa te on the side in case you want the broth to be more flavorful. I ended up adding the ot sa te and lime to my broth to give it a more pronounced flavor. The noodles were solid too, not over or undercooked. Overall, a solid bun bo hue that I would definitely consider ordering again in the future
google avatar

Rayna T.

Yelp
This is the second location in San Jose. Never really been to a soup place where you can pick what kind of noodle you want. So that was pretty cool off the bat. We had ordered our soup with thick noodles. Toppings come on the side. Once our order came, we got the opposite. We did not get the thick noodles we ordered. We notified the worker and had asked for extra lemons. They completely ignored us. All the workers were showing how annoyed they were with us. They were definitely avoiding our table. They also only accept cash. I would recommend going to their other location on Silver Creek. Better service
google avatar

Lety D.

Yelp
This place never fails to hit the spot. I only get the #3 it comes with steak, veggies and all that goodness you can enjoy on a hot or cold day. Dont forget to drop all the sides in your soup , yes grab a little of everything including the squirt of lemon okuuur. Let me see, oh and squirt some Suracha, hope I got that right, never had to spell that one out before Before I leave I make sure to get my Thai Tea Theirs something real yummy about theirs and it's always made the same! Oh just watch it, the tea will stain your teeth
google avatar

Anna P.

Yelp
I took a trip to San Jose, CA. Coming from a Floridian, I have never experienced something like this before. I would hate to write a bad review like this but I thought it would be good to let my fellow yelpers out there. I've never had such a bad day until this day. My bun bo hue looks very good, looks can be deceiving but until I found a piece of hair in my noodles, I couldn't even eat it. I ordered a Bun Bo Hue to share with my sister, after splitting the bowl into two, we found a strand of hair on the pork and a piece in the broth later. However those wasn't the only hairs found in our food, my friend order a bowl of noodles and fried chicken, after eating halfway he found yet another hair in his food. Not only that, he also found hair in his avocado smoothie. In total we found 4 strands/pieces of hair in our food that day, and this is just the kids tables. Who knows how many hair were in the other tables. My mom told me I shouldn't eat it, just in case there were more. My apologies if I'm being overdramatic but what I detest most is seeing hair in my food. I completely lose my appetite and feel the need to throw up.

Cassandra H.

Yelp
The pho broth is so incredible!! I usually add a bunch of sauces to my pho but this one didn't need anything!! it was so flavorful. I'll definitely be coming back many many times the spring rolls were also great

Teresa V.

Yelp
Food here is always fresh and delicious. There are plenty of food options for everyone unlike other pho places.

Ella P.

Yelp
Went here with a few friends at around 8:30 PM for dinner. The area is somewhat sketchy, but the restaurant itself has a nice interior. There were plenty of tables, so I wouldn't worry about coming during rush hour, but the place was practically empty when we came. The food was pretty solid, your average bowl of pho. If you're just looking for some hot pho and not a flashy dish, Pho Tau Bay does its job perfectly. The beef broth had decent flavor and the various meats in the #1 were cooked well. Essentially, nothing special but also nothing to complain about. The service was good and the food came fast. However, one warning--Pho Tau Bay is cash-only (at least for now), so make sure to bring extra cash to pay. Each bowl of pho averages around $14-$15 depending on the size.
