Calafia Cafe Closes in Palo Alto | Eater SF

"In San Jose I found a new restaurant, aptly named Pho Wagyu, that specializes in Vietnamese noodle soup with wagyu beef; a bowl with wagyu, beef flank, tendon, and meatballs runs $19." - Janelle Bitker

Grabbed some delivery from this place the other night. I went with the beef stew and shrimp in a blanket. Everything arrived nice and hot. The shrimp in the blanket, we're very good. The shrimp were juicy, and the wrap was nice and thin and crispy. The beef stew arrived with everything separated, which I appreciated .I found the beef to be a little dry and the soup was lacking flavor and greasy. Overall, not bad.I would try it again.

Amazing food, great staffing and good environment. Everything was delicious and really yummy!!

Google
This is my absolute favorite pho place! The pho is delicious and not overly spiced like some other places I've been to. I almost always get it to go and it comes beautifully packaged with the noodles, RAW beef and toppings on a to go container separate from the broth. I love that the thinly sliced beef is raw so you can decide how long to leave it in the broth. That being said, I have been in to sit down 3 times now and all the 3 times the service has left much to be desired. Also the last time I went in, the table I was sat at was sticky even after I asked them to wipe it again. I will continue to go back though because it really is the best pho I've had--just maybe only to go

So we have a Pho spot we normally go to but this was a bit closer to us so we gave it a try. The food is great! We got the spring rolls and 2 different Pho’s. However, the service was lacking unfortunately from our server (I didn’t get her name). We weren’t checked on once since the food was brought to us. We then tried to get her attention for a to go container and to pay. We finally paid and asked for the to go container. After about 10 minutes I got up to ask about the to go container and she said she thought she had already brought it to us . I see all these reviews about Chase and it’s amazing to see the customer service he is providing to his tables. We just didn’t get to experience it. I’m not sure if there aren’t enough employees or what was happening but service is so important!

There is something for everyone here if you don’t like get a rice noodle bowl or get the Wagyu cooked on a stone table side or wings or spring rolls or a sandwich any number of Vietnamese tasty dishes. We ordered to go and our food was incredible - and packed thoughtfully. Our server recommended that we dine-in next time for the full experience - definitely heating her advice!

Google
Not a bad experience at all. I've had better Pho, but I've had worse too. The staff is really friendly and accommodating. And the restaurant has a good atmosphere and is kept nice and clean. The wings were delicious! Definitely the best thing that we ordered. I would recommend giving this place a try.

We visited on a Friday night in late December 2024 for take out dinner. I think we had some issues placing order online so we just did it in person. There were a good number of people in the restaurant as well. The young lady taking our order while not looking Asian, understood all the things we were talking about which was great because my Vietnamese pronunciation isn't great either. She was very patient and answered all our questions. We were told it would take 15-20 mins which was fine. We did ask for utensils and extra empty containers since we were staying at a hotel nearby and didn't have bowls. Very accommodating. We ordered: - Spicy Beef Noodle Soup (Bun Bo Hue) - Pho Combination (Dac Biet) - Vietnamese crepe Shrimp & Pork (Banh Xeo Tom Thit) - Vermicelli with Grilled Pork - Fried Rice with Chicken - Crispy Egg Rolls (Cha Gio) (3 Pieces) The Bun Bo Hue was good according to my oldest. It had all the right fixings with it too. My middle one had the Pho Dac Biet and cleaned all that up. Wife had the Vermicelli with Grilled Pork, which is always her favorite Vietnamese dish, and loved that. They gave us extra fish sauce and we ordered the Cha Gio to eat with it too for that crunch. I got to eat one of the 3 egg rolls and they were a little small and pricey but I guess that is inflation these days. I had the Banh Xeo and it was a little chewy by the time we got it back to the hotel but it was still amazing and plenty of fish sauce provided. We all shared the fried rice which we were surprised as we were expecting chicken mixed in with the rice but it was a whole piece of chicken sliced up on top of the fried rice. It was marinated in Vietnamese species. I remember it was heavy on the ginger or garlic. I don't remember. Not you typical Americanized Asian food. We would totally stop here again if we were in town. It got us that Asian food we were craving after so much fried fast food on our road trip.

Google
I had wanted to try this place forever, but am rarely that far north. Needless to say, I was disappointed. Broth was so thin and lacking in taste. The only upside was how quickly it came out.

Yelp
Came in by chance because I wanted something different for dinner low in calories. The gentleman running the counter was more than friendly and took my order without hesitation as what I ask for is different I had the shrimp Pho ( pronounce) Pha- without noodles and extra extra been sprouts instead. A younger man came to me asked if I wanted water and i said yes it was great with ice and lemon. I think I had 3 sips before my order was ready! Got home put all the sauces together and proceeded to eat an jalapeño. Oh my GOD MY MOUTH WAS BURNING. I laughed immediately my was back to normal only eat without looking what I was putting in my mouth lol The shrimp were very large and fresh. As were the vegetables. Will I come back ABSOLUTELY!!!!!

Yelp
Food is always consistent here and service is always quick, I usually do take out and always order same: rate beef pho / today I ordered chicken fried rice was good. The only complain i have is that my container is never consistent on the amount of broth they serve. Ambience is always busy and alot of licals come here. Great place for lunch and dinner. Overall good place. Thank you

Yelp
We have been regulars here since we discovered this place and are very disappointed that we won't be returning, primarily because of the obvious lack of cleaning done in the dining room, which makes me wonder about the status of the kitchen :( We were the first customers of the day, and when we walked up to our table, we noticed a few crumbs on it. I brushed them off, not too fazed by this, but after ordering, we noticed all the tables had obvious crumbs on them, and the floor was very dirty. I could also feel crumbs under my shoes and looked under the table to see all kinds of food pieces down there! On top of this, the server brought all of our appetizers and main dishes at the same time and, for some odd reason, our pork spring rolls were cut up into pieces and placed on top of my vermicelli bowl contents. There were two of us, and actually, the other person ordered this appetizer, so why he put it on my food, let alone not on a plate and why he cut them into pieces was bizarre.

Yelp
I waited an entire hour for takeout and then something was missing from the order. Will never go back.

Otto C.

Yelp
Food was wonderful, I highly recommend, and staff was kind, a slight bit of wait but only 4 people even looked to be working so I don't blame them. 4.5/5 if I could

Yelp
After hearing often about this place we finally came and I was quite impressed. This was our second visit and the service was great, food was great. Nice clean environment, very spacious and a good option for a quick meal, with the wait being very minimal. We had fresh rolls that were tasty and definitely fresh, pho broth is great and flavorful, vermicelli bowl is awesome, my personal favorite! Definitely recommend and great location to stop by.

Yelp
We went for the 1st time. Our server Mikayla was great. We started with the shrimp in fried wonton and the pork belly bao buns. Good, my husb really like the pork belly baos. I had the bbq short rib noodle bowl, it was good a bit fatty to me this needed some type of sauce ba the vinegar dressing. Husb had the bbq short ribs plate with rice and salad, they serve broth on the side which was good altho it does have 5-spice in it. He thought it was good. Place is nice, several booths covers were ripped so that was weird.there were some annoying little flies. Overall I'd give like 3.8 stars but that's not on the scale...

Yelp
Great spot in Port St lucie! Authentic Flavors, friendly & fast service, and convenient parking outside! The bathroom was clean, ADA friendly, with enough room inside for a stroller or wheelchair. Even had a changing table!

Lorely H.

Yelp
Raw pork inside egg roll. I don't understand why they don't cook the pork before wrapping it. This is a health hazard. I couldn't eat my food after biting into this. I am extremely disgusted by raw pork meat and would never want to bite into it. I'm extremely upset they were so negligent with RAW PORK.

Yelp
I was pleasantly surprised. A Vietnamese woman recommended this place, so I had to try it. I had the shrimp noodle dish. The service was fast and efficient. The place was pretty full. We lucked out with the last booth. The decor is light and modern. Our food was so good and we will be back. The portions are huge so we took half home.

M C.

Yelp
The pork belly bun is a must. We ordered the vermicelli grilled pork and pork belly. Both were delicious. Service with a smile. The floor was sticky and it's a signal for cleanliness. Minus 2 stars
google avatar

Yelp
The Pho was very tasty but different from what we have in the past. we had Sheimp Pho and added sliced pork to it. it is too cold and thaii basil could not grow so they did not have any but they used cilantro. They are rated A and I would definitely eat there again. We even took the soup home for lunch today.
google avatar

Sally W.

Yelp
This was good but could be better. The fried egg rolls came with no lettuce, carrots, mint, or noodles. We are used to getting these accompaniments at our regular Vietnamese restaurant. The pho broth was really good but the only herb was cilantro, no basil or culantro. There were bean sprouts, jalapeño, and lime and I asked for extra lime and hot chili oil and they had both. The noodles were good and there was plenty of steak but it was not served rare. Service was good but we did have a wait for the food with only a few other people there. Maybe they need more help in the kitchen? If they made these minor improvements they would easily get 5 stars.

Yelp
We were looking for asian food for lunch around the area of Port St. Lucie and came upon this place. It was early lunch time when we got there so there was not alot of people. The place once inside was modern looking with some nice looking decors. We were also immediately greeted with a smile and warm welcome from the staff. Their menu item was not too big but I felt was just enough. We ended up ordering their spring rolls and wings for appetizer and Pho combination, short ribs platter and shrimp fried rice as entree. We also tried their Boba thai and taro tea for drinks. Their Pho was delicious. The broth was just perfectly done and the meat and noodles were generously served. The short ribs platter was also overflowing with the meat but kinda gives you a pause if you want to add fried eggs on top(additional $2.50). Overall, I can say we really enjoyed our experience here(food & service) and if we ever do pass by Port St Lucie again we definitely would come back here for some yummy Pho.

Yelp
When in to get some taro boba. Nice little atmosphere and ambiance. Service was good as well. Boba was great!! Nice little place.

Yelp
Great service by Josiah and the food is amazing. Highly recommended to anyone passing by!

Yelp
A favorite!! The service, food, and restaurant are top notch. The ingredients are fresh! The meat used is tender. There are multiple meat choices or just veggies. Sinus issues, go get a bowl & add their chili oil. Clears things out. Ha!

Yelp
We've been faithful customers for three years. We always do take out and we always order the same thing - rare steak pho. We like what we like. Over the last several months, the portions have gotten smaller and the quality has decreased. If things are more expensive, raise the price. I'm good with that. But with a rare steak pho, I could always portion one into two different servings for my daughter because she can't eat it all in the same day. So I know what is there. Lately the steak slices have gone from 10-12 to 8 and now tonight, to 6. The pile of noddles has slowly gotten smaller. Also the container of broth is no longer filled to the top and it went from being dark and glistening to resembling vegetable stock you would buy from the grocery store. I hope management sees this post and I hope this place gets back to their quality and portions. The broth used to taste rich and have a slight hint of cardamom. But it's no longer like that. What a shame. May have to find a new pho place.

Yelp
One of the Best Vietnamese noodle soup restaurants in the U.S.A. Everything we had ordered there have been outstanding & super delicious!!

Yelp
I am so PISSED ! I ordered vegetable Pho and said to the guy taking my order to please make sure the lil bag with basil, lime ... etc is in my order because that is what really makes the flavor taste fantastic. Well I get all the way home and it wasn't in my order !! This is the third time they messed up my order to go ! I am so pissed because he ensured me that everything was correct when he handed it to me. I called the restaurant and he said to come back with my order! Absolutely NOT because the traffic after 4 pm is bad. Then he said there is NOTHING he can do unless I drive back. It's Pho you had ONE JOB and MY ORDER WAS NOT DIFFICULT TO FULFILL !!! Waste of money I paid $16 for broth basically I WILL NOT EVER GO BACK AGAIN. Because this happened to me three times prior, I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO ANYONE! They do not take pride in preparation for paying customers!! My ordered wasn't difficult at all !! RIDICULOUS! ! !

Yelp
We went in late January and there were still christmas decorations around ... you can infer from this that things move slowly here. There were 3 servers, the young gentleman that attended us was pleasant however taking a look around there was 8 tables with dirty dishes... there were actually more dirty tables than people seated to eat. One of the servers had airpods on so getting their attention was like getting a blind person to see what color shirt you have on. The floor was sticky... I actually saw a couple dine and dash while we were there because nobody came to their table to hand them their check. The FOOD was the only good thing going on. The pho broth was delicious. I would suggest getting take out here because it looks run down. Note for the manager: please train your servers to clean dirty tables promptly instead of having the other guests guess what the person that sat at their table before them had for dinner.

Yelp
Oh no, Pho! Where'd the green stuff go? We get take out and eat in when the craving hits. Today an order of bao buns ($6); soft and smooth on the outside with flavorful pork belly wedged into the bun crack. About average. Pho chicken and pho well done tenderloin were still on point. Except that the condiments were minimized to about three tablespoons of sliced white onion, finely chopped Italian sweet basil & some chopped green onion. That's it. Barely noticeable. What happened to the Thai basil, fresh mint, crispy bean sprouts and jalapeño that used to be included? Bah! I don't like where this is headed......

Yelp
First time here, quick service, good food. We had steamed bun for apps, very good, could have eaten 6. I had grilled shrimp noodle bowl, large shrimp with a great seat and tasty with added hot sauce. Wife had short ribs noodle bowl. Tasty, but ribs were thin and a little fatty, for this reason I rarely order ribs at restaurants unless I can pick them myself. Missing one star as noodles were lukewarm, perhaps waiting in bowl while protein was cooking. Will return to try the Pho.

Yelp
Upon arrival the ambiance of the restaurant is very calming and welcoming. The interior is decorated beautifully and it was very clean. We ordered the pork belly pao buns and they were absolutely delicious!! The meat was tender and flavorful, the buns were soft and fluffy and the veggies were fresh. Afterwards we ordered two pho combination dishes and they were HUGE! They included tender rare steak slices, soft tendon and meatball. It was topped with veggies and it came with a plate of bean sprouts, jalapeños, limes and fresh basil! The entire dish was so flavorful. The customer service was also great. They continued to check on me and my husband to make sure we were doing good and to refill our waters. I will definitely be returning here!
google avatar

Yelp
Holy Pho! This place has the kind of authentic charm that you'd usually find in Ho Chi Minh. The combo pho had a solid broth & hearty portion of meat! Chicken fried rice is a solid safe bet! Good flavor and spices The matcha boba tea was amazing 5* Thai tea boba was also solid. Save space because the portions are large. Family friendly

Eric S.

Yelp
Always attentive service and the food is always consistent. Pleasant and clean environment in a nice location.
google avatar

Bahvee V.

Yelp
Tried a few things here it just not as authentic as I'm use to (California native). I will say they have an awesome wait staff and the food is decent. The pho broth needs improvement and perhaps more embellishments.... We will go try other items.
google avatar

Shauna D.

Yelp
Visited the PSL location for the second time but this time we dined in. Food was delicious! I was a bit disappointed that they didn't have any veggies for the veggie pho but I got chicken pho instead and that was a great choice. Got a Mango Boba tea and a Strawberry Boba with Tapioca Pearls. Ordered two servings of fried eggrolls, shrimp vermicelli noodles and chicken fried rice. All of that came up to about $83 bucks. Service was prompt and good. Very eager to satisfy the customer. The ambiance of the restaurant was nice not loud and overly busy just a good place to sit and talk and eat. I will definitely be going back again!!
google avatar

David T.

Yelp
Delicious!!! Everything was amazing and full of flavor!!! The Pho was by far one of the best I've had and I've had many... ban mi sandwiches a must (pork belly) full of fresh crisp green and sweet pork belly amazing!!! The guy up front very helpful when making decision on drinks great place and a must if around the area... will definitely be back soon
google avatar

Sabrina A.

Yelp
Amazing food, attentive staff, and good ambience. The only complaint I have is they didn't offer either of us our own small plate or dish to use when we got an appetizer. We just ate over paper napkins since we didn't want to eat over one small plate.
google avatar

Steve W.

Yelp
I chose to give them another shot and the food and service were both on point. I noticed that there were all-new servers working there, and the same chef who were all kind and courteous. I also commend this restaurant for not inflating prices at a quick pace over the course of the 2 years that I have been dining there. Things have stayed pretty consistent, at a good value per portion!

Samantha A.

Yelp
Terrible customer service. Called in a to go order, go in to pick it up, then they tell me it'll be done in 10 more mins. I go out to the car and wait, go back in, wait again, and then I'm told they don't have the ingredients for my food.. waste of time.

David M.

Yelp
I had the Chicken Pho with Pineapple tea and Lychee Jelly. The food and drink were great.. so great that I in fact forget to snap a picture, after I realized they were already gone 0.0 The gentlemen working the establishment kept themselves busy at all times, accommodating guests excellently! The ambiance was very comfortable and quiet enough for me to be able to get some work done. Will definitely return!
google avatar

Chi T.

Yelp
Maybe 3.75 Stars* Wagyu prices for pho but not wagyu quality pho. This is an OK Vietnamese place, given there is only a handful in the area. Came here a couple times while on a work trip. We ordered the spring roll and pork bell buns, both were good. Tried the pho and vermicelli with short ribs, both not bad and decent portions. The broth is flavorful, don't know if they just use a lot of pho powder but it is fragrant. Its the prices for me.. where I live, a Pho DacBiet is like $10 and theirs is around $15 and it's not even have all the different cuts of beef. If you're willing to splurge for beef noodle soup then sure. Service is fine, can get busy for lunch.

Odeth

Yelp
Food is good, ambience is great and service is good Down side the food is a bit expensive

Yelp
Probably my favorite place to have pho in PSL Even all of the treasure coast! Such a great family friendly place to eat
google avatar

Maryna F.

Yelp
Delicious, warm broth Pho with silky noodles and lots of Wagyu beef. Add the Thai basil, lime and bean sprouts and enjoy. I'll be back!
google avatar

Larry F.

Yelp
I've been to this place before, and the food here has always been pretty good. Today, I decided to have the barbecue Wagyu beef bowl. The bowl consisted of short rib, noodles, cabbage, bamboo shoots, and a unique dipping sauce. I decided to pour the entire dipping sauce in with the meal, mixed it around, and tasted it. It was very good. I saw some Sriracha pepper and added a little of that, and mixed it up. The combination between the heat and the sweetness was delicious. The food was excellent! The ambiance was decent and just like I remembered it before, but the service today was lacking. It wasn't with the server; it just took too long to get the meal to the table. Because of time constraints, I had to rush to eat it. The server was very friendly, and a gentleman who I think is the owner/chef also came out to see what was going on, and he was a gentleman as well. I would suggest that next time you go to this place, you order the pho for lunch since that seems to be the quickest thing they can put on the table.

G V.

Yelp
Always pleasant service and greeting. The food is delicious and a lot is offered for the price. The ambiance is authentic
google avatar

Matt L.

Yelp
I haven't been here in a few months I got the flank steak pho. I could tell right away it wasn't how it was usually made, it was lighter in color and flavor , also not as much noodles. I was told a family member has now purchased it and is managing it. This was the only thing I had to eat. So I can't really judge anything else on the menu there's quite a few people in the restaurant eating. And the only reason I could tell there was something different is I used to eat here quite a bit a few times a week after work until my hours changed. This was just my experience with one meal and I ate it all it just wasn't up to what it used to be which to me was the best pho in the area
google avatar

James R.

Yelp
I just ordered two short rib baos from here and was extremely dissatisfied. They were a huge waste of $16. The short rib was fatty and tough and not even edible. I am disappointed because I wanted to like this spot after reading the reviews. The white rice was pretty good... but overall 20$ just to eat white rice is frustrating to say the least.

Daniel L.

Yelp
Nice interior and people. However, the Vermicelli noodle bowl was too sweet. No typical pho taste. I like traditional taste not sweet.
google avatar

Jonnie J.

Yelp
Very good Pho! I ate the whole big bowl and it was absolutely scrumptious! Service was very good . Nice spot to bring the family . I especially liked the green wall .Prices are really good for what you get , we will be back .
google avatar

Angela M.

Yelp
Im giving the 4 star simply because they are the only Pho place in the area. Its very inconsistent but no other options in the area. Its good. the portions are small , but i do believe they may have changed hands recently being that the last time i went there was all new faces and the food improved since my last visit

Mike M.

Yelp
Came & got the Pho soup. Huge let down. The "Wagyu rare beef" was extra chewy.... Very surprised actually for a place called Pho Wagyu lol!! They give you barely any basil jalapeños or limes, we had to ask for extras, twice. The broth lacked flavor. " Also! They advertise beer on the menu and online, they had zero beer selection when we got there. Horrible experience over all.

Jordan R.

Yelp
Service was good but food left alot to be desired. Disclaimer thid was our first time trying Pho. My wife, 9 year old daughter, and 2 year old daughter went in one night to give it a try. The service was good however, the pho itself I was not a fan of. It seemed super bland, basically tasteless. Im not sure if thats how Pho is in general, or if that is specific to this restaurant but I probably wont return just because it was not enjoyable.
google avatar

John M. H.

Yelp
I would have added pictures but we were so hungry we dug right into the Vietnamese Spring Rolls that were awesome and the Fried Tofu that were cooked perfectly! Main course was the Noodle Bowls that in our opinion were way too much food but they again wowed us! Amazing food, great quiet atmosphere and the staff were eager to help! We are planning our next dinner in 2 weeks! Thank you to that friendly staff who made an amazing dinner!

Yelp
The food was really delicious! First time trying and I will be back! My bf didn't like his pho but the owner was kind enough to replace his meal with fried rice (which he enjoyed). Only downside, we still had to pay 50% of the cost on the pho that we sent back though. Boba was subpar, the tapioca pearl was very soggy.
