On the Grid : Phoenicia Bakery & Deli

"Austin's go to place for imported food. Whether your looking for Serbian Ajvar or Lebanese Olives Phoenicia has it. Bask in the smell of an old world market while your mouth waters over the buckets of olives and Shawarma slow roasting on the spigot. Make sure you load your cart up when you are there because they are closed on Sunday!" - XtraMileMedia

Best Middle Eastern Restaurants in Austin | Eater Austin

"Part market, part deli, Phoenicia has been an East Austin staple for decades. The shelves are packed with Middle Eastern staples, while the bakery counter dishes out fluffy house-made pita, za’atar bread, and Persian sweets. It closes early, so plan for a morning or midday stop to stock up. There’s also a second South Lamar location for Austinites who live south of the river." - Darcie Duttweiler

They have an olive bar, small produce section, a fresh deli, many aisles of pickled veg and dry grocery … and imported dates!

Here is what you should know before coming here: I have been passing by this place for over ten years and finally found time today to come in and visit it. Clean restrooms towards the back next to where you can order fresh hot food to go. They close by 6 p.m. on most days Relaxing music and organized with even a fresh deli area and bakery with variety of bread items, meats, and cheeses to go. Also have frozen items to the back unique in this area you will not easily find in Austin Also noticed most items not in English so I am sure I am missing alot here in my review. :) Parking lot: For some reason this whole time I thought the parking lot was for the massage school but instead of massage schools right behind this location and has their own designated parking! Somewhat picky to turn in and out of off Burnet road depending on traffic but keep that in mind on the northbound Lane to get in and out of here.

Google
They have the best falafel I have ever tried before in the US I always come and get the Lebanese style falafel it’s really good and they don’t ask u to pay tip, my favorite all time they also have fresh break that they make in the store highly recommend trying their food. There is no place to sit u need to take it to go.

Google
This is such a great place to shop for healthy options. There is an amazing foodie spot in the back corner of the shop. This is one if my favorite shops to stop in every time I'm in ATX.

Google
I’ve seen a number of reviews mentioning racial bias at this store, and after my visit, I felt it was important to share my experience. I’m a 30-year-old white man. As soon as I walked in, the shop owner began following me—clearly and closely. The store is small, with no other customers, so it was very noticeable. I can absolutely understand how someone might feel racially profiled in that environment. Honestly, I felt uncomfortable too. That said, I believe this is a small, family-run shop doing their best to manage security and inventory in a tough part of town. Over the past two months, I’ve witnessed multiple thefts at the CVS across the street. I don’t think the behavior I experienced was racially motivated—I think it’s a cautious response from a local business trying to stay afloat. The good news? I picked up some bread and olives—great prices, and I’m convinced this is the best pita bread in Austin. To the owners: Please consider how your approach comes across. If loyal, paying customers—regardless of race—feel watched or assumed guilty, they won’t come back. You have something special here, but the vibe matters. A little trust could go a long way in keeping your community with you. Especially the older man behind the register. I think probably the owner. You can be very cold and perceived as a bit rude. A little customer service, and just a smile goes a long way in austin

Google
Been coming here for 20 years. It's such a nostalgia trip and the food quality is just as good. Also the Goya ginger beer is the spiciest I've ever tasted. I loved it but it's not for the faint of heart. And as always their gyro and falafel are just amazing.

Google
One of the most unique shopping experiences. It was sensory overload of specialty items. I had a hard time choosing but the garlic pita chips were irresistible. The deli counter was quick and efficient, not a long wait at all while browsing. Most sandwiches I’ll see are $14 or more, so I was delighted to have an $8.99 muffuletta. Checkout was also easy.

Yelp
I continue to come back to this establishment on an ongoing basis, lately about once a month. They have great Middle Eastern pickles, along with an excellent olive bar. I also have taken a big liking to there feta cheese. Today I bought the French feta, which the fellow behind the counter said was clearly the best. It was the most expensive also but not particularly high dollar, and delicious. The owner has mellowed through the years and will engage in some basic conversation and is much happier, or seems to be, than he was years ago. A really great place to shop for Middle Eastern groceries and food. If you haven't been here, I would suggest you give it a try.

Yelp
I've been to both of Phoenicia locations and it's honestly a hidden gem! From their pastries and meals to their groceries it's a must try!! You can't go wrong with a falafel wrap or gyro plate the service is always fast and friendly. If you've driven by and thought about stopping just do it!

Armo F.

Yelp
I'd give it a 5 stars for the market selection (it is pretty good actually) BUT, the man who is at the cash register HAS TO GO! I drove 40 minutes to get here so I could get over $150 in things I can't get anywhere else near me, and when I pull up with a full shopping cart, he gives snide comments about "I don't have a conveyor belt like HEB so pull your cart up and make it easy for me... and on and on and on..." He was patently OBNOXIOUS, just like he always is. Poor, poor man If he is the owner, a family member, or whatever he is, he is a liability and has to be removed from dealing with the public. I am so upset with him always being like this I'll have to find another middle eastern type of market elsewhere...he isn't worth the drive just to be treated rudely by him. I fervently hope he reads Yelp reviews and sees this.

Yelp
Another Austin been here forever treasure! Not only do they have fresh breads that are, indeed, the stuff that makes life yum. They have meats, dried fruits, olives, unusual pickles and many grocery items. The little take out is always a good to go choice! Come and take your time to see all the goodies. I love this place for unusual entertaining options that travel well!

Yelp
When I'm looking for ingredients for baking or cooking, they always have it and at a great price. So kind, also, and really good food from their deli!!

Yelp
Phoenicia Bakery is such an underrated gem. They have fresh made hummus, tabouli, baba ganoush, and fresh pita chips along with desserts like baklava, kunefe, and danishes. They also have things that are hard to find elsewhere, like pomegranate molasses, Bulgarian feta, pepper dips, lavash bread, dried fruits, olives, cans of table cream, big tubs of dates, spices, ingredients like mahlab, etc. The prices are good and the stock is good quality. I haven't checked out the deli, but I will soon.

Yelp
I've been going to Phoenicia for years now, I used to be a regular at their S. Lamar location. But lately I've been visiting this location which has been very nice - it's bigger and has more space to roam around. I really enjoy coming here. I love the olive bar here, which is better priced than Central Market or Whole Foods. I am addicted to the Turkish Olives - phenomenal with great flavors, but they have a very vast selection and a lot to choose from. They have a plethora of Middle Eastern and European foods, spices, and groceries here, along with a grill in the back if you'd like to order some food - like falafel or shawarma or salad plates. I love their hummus, it's made fresh here in-house. I also love their dolmas, tzatziki sauce, and Russian Potato Salad - oh yeah that's really good BTW and all made in-house. Their Baba Ghanoush has a real strong smoky flavor - much different than any I've had. And I can't say enough about the garlic sauce called "Toum" - oh my goodness - it's so good! Just ask for it in the back and you'll forever be thankful and happy. It's really good stuff that goes great on everything! The service here has always been super friendly and attentive. They love to talk to you to catch up and I notice they have a lot of repeat business and locals who have been shopping there for many years, it's like they pretty much know everyone who shops there. Excellent customer service, and they always try to help you out if you need anything or if you have a special request for a specific product - they'll try to get it for you.

Yelp
Glad I found this place because I needed something to "shawarma" me up! The beef shawarma plate was fabulous. Decent selection of Greek groceries and a pastry section with all kinds of goodies like baklava.

Yelp
Wonderful ethnic food! Wish they were closer to our home! Best place to find ingredients you can't get anywhere else.

Yelp
I have depended on this place for a quarter of a century (yeah, I'm old as dirt). My visit last week was shocking. (July 16,2020). Three of the behind-the-counter staff members weren't wearing any masks. While standing in line during check out, a vendor with heavily soiled clothes trudged in and made his way within 2 feet or so of two socially distancing customers and the owner at the cash register. HE HAD NO MASK ON. He then proceeded to chit-chat with the owner who didn't seem to think much of it. The vendor was dropping off a lot of fresh handmade Arabic style pizzas.

Yelp
Phoenicia is a long time "go to" Mediterranean food business in Austin. The make their own Pita Bread and it is always fresh. All of their take out food is outstanding. When you order take out, the meat is grilled then. The lentils and rice and tabouli sides are my favorites. My favorites are the Falafel Pita Wraps and the Chicken Shawarma Dinner. They have a deli and sweets section as well. This place just rocks the house! You won't be sorry that you stopped by Phoenicia for your next Mediterranean food fix. Or, maybe just stop by for the halal of it.

Yelp
This places has an amazing selection! Unfortunately tonight was the third time they were closed when I arrived due to temporary hours, I wish they would be posted here or on google. Also, do check the expiration dates.

Yelp
Great selection and great people. I can't believe we haven't stopped in sooner. We will definitely make this a weekly shopping stop.

Yelp
Accept Apple Pay which is super convenient. Had the lemon coconut dessert from bakery and was delicious! Friendly staff, would go again!

Yelp
This is a great place if you are looking for real Lebanese food. There is a market with lots of good stuff my favorite is the Zaatar it's great on everything especially eggs. There is also a restaurant with lots of dank food. The meat and cheese pies hit the spot when you are hungry. It's a must when you are looking for the real Middle Eastern goods.

Chester S.

Yelp
I love this place. Their Lebanese falafel is so good that I haven't tried anything else. My husband loves their shawarma plate. They have everything, including really good prices on olive oil, spices you can't find elsewhere, multiple kinds of preserved lemons, all those things that good cookbooks require. I should warn people that the owner (I assume) is grumpy. I actually thought I had done something to offend him, and he didn't want me to shop there. I thought about not shopping there, but it's way too good for that. But then an employee mentioned something, and I realized it's like a little bit of New York in Austin. So, don't worry if he's grumpy.

Lisa H.

Yelp
I have loved this store since the 90s. They have all kinds of packaged selections, an awesome selection of olives and baked goods, and my favorite pita bread. I usually get a shwarma to go when I shop and I have to say that they have gone the way of stingy when it comes to protein. The last couple times, the ratio of protein/parsley/onions has been way off and I felt like I was eating an onion shwarma with the protein as a condiment. Like seriously needed to brush my teeth a couple times to get the onion out of my breath. I understand that inflation makes things more expensive. But they have increased the price and decreased the amount of protein thereby decreasing the pleasure I once had treating myself to this wonderful sandwich.

Ian O.

Yelp
Great food and service the homemade hummus was delicious! Good layout in the store and great selection of items.

Yelp
I visited grocery and deli store last week and it was very clean and organized. It had a good selection of Mediterranean, European merchandise. Got an Italian cake and tuna and loved both. It is a small one compared to the international foods but I think it was well managed. I tried their refrigerated baba ghanouj and I also though it was great.

Jim E.

Yelp
Great selection of fresh items and spices. Breads baked daily. Prices are very good. Employees friendly and helpful.

Yelp
Came here on a whim as it was in my bookmarked places to try and I needed a quick bite in the area. This place is very New York store/deli in its setup. They have a grocery anchored by a bakery/deli on one side and then their little sandwich shop on the other. Nowhere to sit to eat, so it is all carryout. They have a sort of hodgepodge menu that spans the Mediterranean/Greek/MiddleEast spectrum. I got their Lebanese Falafel wrap and, to be honest, was expecting A LOT more for $4.99 for just the wrap (no chips or drink or anything else included). The wrap was also very dry (barely any sauce to speak of) and the falafel were small. So, definitely not impressed w/this offering of theirs. Also got a slice of baklava, which was decent, but honestly not the best I've had and again was a little dry, so I don't know if it was because it was towards the end of the day or what the deal was. Also, I'm guessing the guy who was the owner that rang me up was definitely more interested in talking to the guy in line behind me than acknowledging my existence. Not kidding...he literally did not say a single word to me; just rang up my stuff, stood there looking at my while I got my credit card out, took it, ran it, handed it back to me while the receipts printed then handed me my copy all while talking to the guy behind me. Sorry to say will not be coming back as their customer service seems to be as dry as their falafel wrap and baklava.

Yelp
Just down the street from my office is Phoenicia bakery & deli. They carry halal and non-halal deli meats and have a restaurant (to-go only) in the back. The shawarma at the restaurant is not halal but you can ask for a sandwich made from their halal deli meat at the front of the store. I've tried their halal oven roasted Turkey and it's very good. Owners are not Muslim but are very respectful and they meticulously clean their machine before placing any halal deli meat on it to be sliced. They also carry fresh baklava and other desserts. The store itself has some Middle East sourced shelf products. They are known for their fresh pita bread, which my family loves. They supply it to stores and restaurants around Austin. During prime hours, it's hard to find parking since their lot is small so I don't recommend coming during peak lunch. Overall a very nice convenience to have in Austin and the only place I know to have fresh deli meat.

Yelp
Phoenicia bakery and deli has been always on my radar to get to, but being a family based shop they have very strict hours (9 AM to 7PM Mon to Sat, closed on Sunday), so was really happy to get there on a saturday afternoon, and boy am I glad that I got there. I did not buy any of their groceries so my review is strictly based on their deli (though I already have plans to go back and get some of their awesome halva etc.) The chicken shawarma was one of the better ones I have had in a long time. Falafel shawarma was a tad bit spicy as I think they include jalapeno etc. In the stuffing, but still really good. Got some baklava etc. But haven't had a chance to have it yet, as we stuffed ourselves on the shawarma. Highly recommended to at least try once and form your own opinions!!

Yelp
I have been buying their Phoenicia pita bread from Arab grocery stores so I decided to check out the place to pick up some fresh bread. It was 1 PM and they were out of bread. "It is sold out", the owner told me. "You have to come in early." Ok, fair enough. Having read some good reviews about their food, I decided to order the chicken shawarma and the Lebanese falafel wrap. As I waited for my food, one of the workers preparing the food went to the restroom with a knee-length apron on her body; and came out, started working in the kitchen with the same apron. Ok, gross! Another server was cooking something on a stove and she tasted the food by licking it off her palm. Both weren't wearing any gloves as they made the wraps. I have eaten from food trucks so I can overlook these unhygienic practices as long as the food tastes good. But unfortunately, their falafel and shawarma were below average and not tatsy. I threw it away after few bites. One star because of bland taste and for being unhygienic.

ric d.

Yelp
I've always liked the Phoenicia, but am reluctant to shop here during the pandemic. Their open olive bar set-up makes me nervous. Everyone can use their utensils without gloves to get condiments. No precautions required. This is the type of open arrangement conducive to the spread of covid. Sorry to say, because I like these people.
google avatar

Tanya W.

Yelp
I like popping in for their pre-made tabouleh and dolmas in the refrigerated section. Spot on fresh and delicious just like my Aunt used to make as a kid. The tabouleh is loaded full of fresh parsley and doesn't have too much bulgar wheat which I like. The dolmas with rice, pine nuts and tomato are made correctly! Delicious and fresh! I recommend buying your cucumbers here. They don't have any wax and are super crisp and fresh the way real cucumbers should be!! Eat the skin!! I like their Greek olive oils, too. If you get anything from the grill, the falafel is pretty good. The store on Lamar is good, too. The little owner at the register must have been in a good mood, or he got the memo!!
google avatar

Karlyn K.

Yelp
I love the authentic air of this place. Typically I go here for rose water and baklava. Periodically I'll grab some tea. I can't read much of what is on the shelves but I've never felt unwelcome. I've gone to other authentic type grocers and felt quite out of place. They are always welcome here. I'd love to try the food but no idea where to even start. Maybe eventually I'll get brave. As for the rose water, I use it as a body spritzer and hair wash. It's wonderful. Light and smells heavenly. I recommend it. But please don't take them all. :)
google avatar

Priscila B.

Yelp
We were sold sardines that had been expired for a year and the cheese had mold on it. I went back to return everything I had bought that day, expired or not because I was just so grossed out by the situation. The older man was not apologetic, instead asking me if I knew what kind of food I had bought. I know it's not supposed to be molding or expired! Will never shop there again and I suggest everyone check their food before purchasing

Mehmet C.

Yelp
They are selling either expired or not well preserved food. You might get food poisoning easily. Look at the chocolate I got today, literally stuff growing on it. I can't believe they are allowed to sell such items.
google avatar

Jason A.

Yelp
I needed a quick lunch within walking distance from the office and, lo and behold, the Phoenicia Bakery and Deli did the trick. I decided to order the lamb and beef gyro. It was very good. The meat was tender and very flavorful. The lettuce and tomato were fresh and the baked pita was nice and warm. I recommend stopping by for the food. But, wait, it's also a small grocery store with all kinds of various goodies and their pastries looked amazing.
google avatar

Thomas S.

Yelp
An inexpensive place to pick up good middle eastern groceries, pita bread, and deli foods. We picked up some imported canned sardines, canned octopus, fresh baked pita breads, and deli lunch. The canned items were cheap at $0.99 & $1.69. The warm pita breads were $1.50 for a bag of 5. We ordered egg plant sandwich, falafel wrap, and beef kabobs plate to go. Everything were were seasoned and tasted really good. It was fun to browse the imported middle eastern grocery items. All the employees were friendly.
google avatar

Deirdre E.

Yelp
Their grocery store has provided me with countless delicious prepared meals of marinated green beans, fava beans in olive oil with herbs, greek salads with zataar spices and lemon juice dressing, tzatziki, falafel, and more. Additionally I rely on this place for spices, olives, pickled turnips, terrific feta, and their fabulous zataar bread. But nothing beats their hard working manager who is there rain, snow, sleet or shine, 6 days a week, every hour they are open.
google avatar

Jess V.

Yelp
Amazing little place packed with so many goodies. I got the cheese sandwich from the deli and it was so delicious! I'm sure the shawarma is fantastic too. My friend gets that frequently. Also I got a side salad which was super.
google avatar

Jordan N.

Yelp
This is the best Lebanese / middle eastern market in Austin. Large collection of items, well stocked with various brands, and also the best organized middle eastern market I have seen. Maybe not as large as Phoenicia in Houston or World Food Warehouse in Dallas, but still worthy of a revisit for the locals. Additionally, there's a decent selection of desserts, a small grill that produces decent sandwiches (even though some items in the menu stray from Middle Eastern fare).

Michelle C.

Yelp
Love this place ....The food is awesome .My friend is from Israel she recommended it to me .They have all kinds of organic, authentic food from their country
google avatar

Monica R.

Yelp
Follow the pothole road. I am starting my Burnet crawl and decided to start as far South on Burnet as I could. Technically Phoenicia is not the southernmost restaurant on Burnet, but it's the first place starting South that I haven't eaten. I have meant to go to this middle eastern grocery specialty/deli for years now, but I usually pass it thinking, "I really need to stop here one day," and finally I did. I got the prosciutto sub and my husband ordered the chicken shawarma. While both were decent, nothing really blew us away. What I was really impressed with was the selection of grocery products. While we waited 10 minutes for our food, I perused the aisle with resentment that I had not discovered this specialty store sooner. I thought about the futile hours I have spent attempting to make a Bon Appetit recipe and searching for ingredients never to be found. I definitely encourage all adventurous home chefs to stroll in and and maybe pick up some tuna stuffed olives or guava juice for deglazing.
google avatar

Paul R.

Yelp
My wife is Greek so we like to hit all the places that make gyros. This is one of our favorites. It is a little mini grocery store but in the back you can order from a menu for to go meals. We just discovered today that they also have a seating area at the opposite end so we decided to stay and eat instead of bringing home like we usually do. It was nice! We were the only ones there even though it was noon so we had a nice private lunch. Marina had an eggplant sandwich which looked like a meatball sub to this American. Eggplant is not my thing so I went with the gyro as always. When I find something I like I don't want to risk getting something different and being disappointed. :) I recommend this place for something not fancy but different for lunch and just want to walk in and grab to go or just sit for a bit for a quick bite.
google avatar

Jaime S.

Yelp
This is a tough review to write, because the food is 5 star. But the service - here I mean the S. Lamar spot - is often very bad. I love the pita, the hummus, tabouli, baba ganoush, and much more. These are staples of my diet, and in Austin, Phoenicia is the best I've found. But the long-timers who have worked there - they just don't give a damn. I've waited at the counter while the old lady played with her cell phone and wouldn't look up - even when I directly addressed her. That's a worst-case scenario, but in general, service is very uneven. A few staffers are good, but if they are busy making sandwiches or whatever, you may wait 5 minutes to check out for your groceries - even if nobody is ahead of you in line.
google avatar

Tom W.

Yelp
Absolutely love the vegetarian sampler platter. Delicious light fluffy falafel, dank grape leaf wraps, creamy hummus, tasty tabouli, excellent rice and pita. Very solid healthy vegan option. There are a couple other great Mediterranean restaurants in the neighborhood but Phoenicia has my favorite falafel.
google avatar

Aaron P.

Yelp
Man I was really excited to try this place because it's well rated and in the neighborhood. Also, it's a bakery and a store so you can drop in a pick up interesting items. The layout of the store when you walk in is very confusing because the restaurant is off to the side next to a deli counter and the lunch counter where you order food is actually on the opposite end of where the restaurant seating is. And then there are separate point of sale terminals scattered around near the entrance. Anyways, I ordered the falaffel wrap Lebanese style and the flavors were good initially. There are a number of vegetables tossed into the wrap: lettuce, tomato, pickled beets. The parsley is fresh. It got a little bland as I ate through it. I can say I have had better falaffel. I also had the lahme bi-agin or meat bread which was sort of strange. It was piping hot when I unwrapped the tinfoil. It's kind of like a rolled up pizza but without any cheese. There was something strange about the seasoning and flavors I couldn't put my finger on. Maybe sumac? Unfortunately, I left feeling disappointed because I've had bolder flavors from this kind of food. I'll have to let a friend who knows what to order take me back here to try it out again.

Eli C.

Yelp
This is small as grocery stores go but it is packed with many wonderful Middle Eastern delights including cheese, sweets, olives, stuffed grape leaves, hummus, tabbouleh, and warm pita bread if you time your visit right. They also have good selection of items prepared on the premises that can be eaten in the small dining room or taken home. I go there most often when watermelon is in season and I make a meal of it with feta cheese and pita cheese dipped in a mixture of spices called zaatar and olive oil! I have a watermelon in the refrigerator and need go to Phoenicia!
google avatar

Gail A.

Yelp
This would be the place to come, if you want fresh baked healthy whole wheat flatbread, round, for cheap. Get yourself down here on a Friday, when they offer their best servings.
google avatar

Iris T.

Yelp
I came here on the recommendation of a friend who absolutely loves the za'tar bread they sell every Saturday. Luckily, I was in town on a Saturday so I decided to stop by! The bread is located to the right of the cash register and are a good size (maybe around 6 inches in diameter). At $1.75 for one. They also have cheese bread and another one topped with meat. I'm vegetarian so I stuck with the recommended item. I was planning on getting pizza later so I opted out of the cheese bread. I also took the opportunity to browse. The shop is on the small size (still not that small though) but it has its own parking lot and is on the same street and block as some other eateries. I wouldn't say it's spotless but it is pretty clean and it seems to be family run (maybe). There's a Middle Eastern market I go to in Houston that goes by the same name but it's much larger so it threw me off at first (I had originally thought they were related). There's a bakery section and they also have an olive bar (I couldn't help myself and bought some) as well as some food in the back that you can order. They have one vegetarian option that looked delicious but I likely can't have. We're vegetarian but we also don't eat onions or garlic, otherwise I would have loved to try it. They also have your usual Middle Eastern/Mediterranean ingredients and snacks like ajver, beans, couscous, halwa, pomegranate syrup/concentrate, and even canned baba ganoush. I even saw some British items like treacle and custard powder. All in all, a good place to get some international ingredients, food, and fresh baked goodies. Prices are somewhat reasonable and the prices for the custard powder is actually lower than I've seen in Houston. The service isn't stellar but you usually come to these places for the stuff they sell anyway.

Yelp
What is homemade by Phoenicia Deli is superb. Great pita, great yogurt, great baba ganoosh. What is not homemade is more of a mix. Olives are absolutely superb - the best in Austin by far. Nothing comes close. The labneh (yogurt so thick it is practically a paste) is also a star. Canned goods and boxed goods often are very old and very stale. And yes - even cans can get too old. Brazilian, Latin American, Russian or Indian stuff? Fuggetabout it. Oldies to the point just short of being moldies. Feta cheese? The French goat cheese is so good it should be legendary. The other cheeses - feta or otherwise - meh. Deli meats - ho hum. They make fresh hot sandwiches in the back. These are great ... but there is really no where to eat them. The "lunch area" is claustrophobic and oppressive. And hot items from Mideastern grills must be eaten the nanosecond they are off the grill. By the time you wait in line at the cash register, cooling sandwich in hand, to pay for it ... and then go home or to your car or to the park to eat it ... it is dead by the time you are ready for it. * On the question - Sarah;s vs Phoenicia. Sarah's has a better place to sit and eat - and so is a better place for fresh hot food. There are none of the extraordinary thrills of the best that Phoenicia offers. But there are no old stale boxes or cans either. Less risk - more safety - less payoff. For canned or bottled anything go Sarah;s. For food for the gods - pick the best of what Phoenicia has to offer - especially if it is homemade.

Yelp
So I tried this place because I have a love for gyros and I hear they have delish fresh pitas. I arrived at the somewhat nondescript market hungry and ready for some kind of Mediterranean specialty. Do not pass go, do not collect $200, straight to the back of the room where the menu lay in wait. I ordered a gyro after some debate on the schawarma, got me some olives (great olive bar!), hummus, olive oil and some mmm mmm fresh pitas. The hummus has a different flavor I can't quite place but that is really compelling -- and the gyro was ok. Not amazing, but ok. All the stars are for the huge variety of olive oil, the impressive olive selection, the really really nice girl that brought my food to me in the store and for those pitas that I plan on digging into STAT.

Yelp
Love the white and whole wheat pitas that come in three different sizes. So fresh. So cheap. So versatile (the medium size is perfect for homemade thin crust pizzas). Today they were still warm when I bought them mid-afternoon. Also love their fresh olives! I was told they cure some themselves. They now have the little French cornichon pickles as well. Great prices, too, so much lower than Central Market's. It's hard for me to believe the man who works there is as grumpy as he's made out to be. True, he's a man of few words, but is polite and efficient. He knows his store and his products well - a few times he has walked me right to my requested items. He must have a good heart because I've seen him personally get a sandwich and a drink to feed a homeless man waiting outside in the parking lot. I cannot help but think of my mother saying "never judge a book by its cover".

Yelp
This place is nice but very expensive. The owner is not friendly I think he is not happy with his life , but what I didn't like is the pricing. Tooooo expensive.

Yelp
horrible horrible horrible customer service.. The food is not good at all. It gave my husband the worst burps that lingered. The chicken was so dry. The humus was the worst humus I have ever had . I hate to be rude but, when you own your own business and you have the worst customer service everyone should know. I don't care if you are having a bad day I understand if one person is but, when everyone is...Ya'll need to get it together

Yelp
Unprofessional and insanely rude. Wife came home from this place after looking for weeks for great pita bread. She had some, but seemed shocked and pretty upset. Told me she didn't know the place had a five dollar minimum for credit cards, which is easily solvable by the cashier saying "five dollar credit card minimum," but nope. The guy snaps at her and says "you better have cash to pay for that," when she said no and offered to buy more to make up for it he said, angrily, "What's wrong with your generation? You never have cash." Is this guy serious? I can't believe she still bought stuff from him. Please, do not give this place any business as they don't care about their customers at all and will openly let you know that. Absolutely never going back

Yelp
I decided to give them another try today and I'm glad I did. Although my roasted chicken wrap was dry and monotonous, I found the the beef shawarma wrap to be delicious and not dry at all. I'm not sure you can find a better meal for $5 anywhere in Austin.
