Celebrate Pride at New Orleans Gay Bars, LGBTQ-Owned Restaurants, and Queer-Friendly Spaces | Eater New Orleans

"Catch Pridefest at the Phoenix, the beloved corner Marigny bar that gets just the right amount of rowdy. Ground zero for Pride central, there will be a performance on the main stage by 2025 headliner Miss Kerri Colby, familiar from RuPaul’s Drag Race. The bar also serves as the kickoff point for the annual Gay Pride Parade, held that Saturday, followed by all-night-long celebrations upstairs at the bar, which might just be the highlight of the whole day." - Beth D’Addono

Drinks are poured well here! Great social place to meet friends or for club nights! NO COVER. The street party beer busts are fun too and local vendors and food vendors come share their wares.

Seems that if you're not a regular customer you don't receive as good a service when ordering drinks. Bartenders can be a bit rude if they don't know you, but people were friendly. All in all it was a good experience.

Salon Atria

Google
Rudest bartender I have ever had the bad luck of encountering. It’s been several years since I’ve been there, but decided to spend my birthday there with 15-20 invited friends. I arrived about 1 hour before friends would begin to show up to a fairly empty bar. I was treated so rudely by the bartender that I left without even sipping the cocktail I ordered and called guests to change location. Sad that good memories were ruined by one bartender. I have no plans to ever return.

Billy Blue

Google
Nice at times when only locals are around and was open during the blizzard. Just don’t ever think that it’s bi-friendly. My wife and I are in an open relationship, and I will no longer play pool with her here. It’s a meat market and if that’s what you want, that’s five stars.

Lyle Diehl

Google
Went here for a party thrown for a friend. Was a laid back atmosphere with everyone respecting all, even a straight person like me! Highly recommend you come here, no matter your preference!

Joshua P

Google
A sad place. Unwelcoming bartenders, guys always asking for money inside and outside the bar, unfriendly service, and a do-nothing owner. I hear it used to be good, but after many visits, and seeing so much drug use and pickpocketing (very prevalent here—watch your belongings if you dare), I would say skip this faded dive and try Mag’s across the street with Princesse and friendly service—oh, this place is cash only too…convenient for running 2 sets of books. If you’re a Bloody Mary fan, stop in on Sundays, tho, and make sure to pay your respects to Willamina and tell her Joshua sent you—she has ALL the stories from her 50+ years living in the city and loves making Bloody’s with ALL the garnish.

Jon Thomas

Google
Has really gone down hill since 2016. 3rd visit in 2 years. Staff was rude this time. Drinks were cheap is only redemption.

David

Google
Great little dance bar. Cheap drinks and great atmosphere.

Yelp
This was one of our last nightlife stops for Southern Decadence. For their Sunday night party, they had local vendors, a grill, and a Nasty Pig sale. Inside the bar, there was a little shop, but it was very well stocked. You can find everything from lube, gear, etc. This was my first time at the Phoenix, which I think is equivalent to The Eagle in other major cities. I loved how there was a bar window outside where you could order drinks without having to go inside. I am not sure if the outside seating was temporary for Decadence but it was convenient. I also enjoyed the upstairs for a bit, but spent most of my time in the main bar. They do have a Touch Tunes which were taking credits/requests but not playing the songs. Highly recommend this place if you're into bars that are heavily kink or gear positive.

Yelp
After many years of visiting New Orleans and enjoying Phoenix Bar, we were extremely disappointed when we visited the bar in October 2023. The exact date was the night of the Krewe of Boo parade. True, we entered the bar with outside cocktails. However, we clearly intended to order drinks as, the moment we finished our cocktails, we sat down at the bar. Not only did the bartenders ignore us, but they also waited on several other patrons and never even bothered to ask us if we wanted anything to drink. This was truly despicable service. And this isn't personal. We don't know anyone in New Orleans. We weren't wearing offensive clothing. We don't understand why this happened. We have every intention of returning to New Orleans. Phoenix Bar? Maybe not.

Yelp
Good drinks, good looking men and a friendly staff. We were there Omer Southern Decedents weekend. It was packed! Talked and met a lot of nice men from all over the country. Both door men were terrific. Making sure that all patrons were safe. A twink tried to slip the door man $20 to get upstairs without waiting in line. It did not work. It told the guy to take it back or he was going to drop in on the ground. All types of men.

Yelp
As a gay woman that came inside with a few queer friends, we were so unwelcome. We came with a good attitude and were ready to enjoy our time, but were met with glares and snide comments from workers. I love gay bars but as a lesbian, there are rarely places we're welcome-- this is one. So much for community I guess...

Yelp
If you're a dirty pig, this is the place for you! Local dive bar for gay pig boys. BJ's in the bathroom

Antonio V M.

Yelp
Great gay bar outside of the touristy quarter. None of the crowds and high prices. Friendly bartenders and regulars. I've never been on a night that I didn't find several friendly patrons to strike up a conversation with. If your looking for glam, I would suggest another place but if you like a great friendly atmosphere, this is the place.

Yelp
Bring cash, tip well. Downstairs, upstairs, sidewalk...always a fun time Great "supply" shop also

Tech H.

Yelp
Last time I was there, maybe a year or two ago I met a gentleman upstairs in the dark room, and after giving him head for a few moments, he slid right in and gave me what I wanted. It's very dark upstairs and you can basically have an orgy upstairs.
google avatar

Yelp
The Phoenix is a fun bar I visit each time I'm in town. My first time there I went with a cool chic I met at The Golden Lantern and after that I was hooked. To the person who said women aren't welcome - let me guess how that interaction probably went. Like, OMG Becky let's go to the gay bar, I hear they're fun. Snaps selfies and asks for some foo foo obnoxious drink and then wonders why they got a side eye, lol! Things not to do: Don't show up with your bachelorette party or gal pals with brightly colored wigs for a novelty experience Don't act like an asshole and take photos or selfies Don't gawk Do be nice, have cash be respectful and respect others space and you'll be more than welcome and have a fantastic time.

Yelp
Well this was an experience for sure. The one thing I'll say immediately is that the Phoenix Bar, at it's core, is a wonderful dive bar, with some of the nicest employees I've met. Super sweet. Super nice. Just all-around good people. The bar in the main floor is dark. The upstairs is darker. Way darker. Like no lights darker. There is a sex swing on the second floor. I think you've learned enough right there so I don't have to go on. The bar downstairs, and even upstairs, is small so if you're not a fan of crowds and it's a busy weekend, this might not be your place. If it isn't, just be prepared for some sweaty man to drip across you as they pass by. Again, it may be your thing and if it is, then here ya go! Two other things to know: Bring cash. Cash only here folks. Keep your cell phone in your pocket. This isn't the kind of place where they like photos to be taken so just keep it away until you get outside of the bar, it'll be easier that way. It's fun. It's raunchy. It's a good time if that's your thing. But like anything, it's what you make of it. Just bring some cash, tip your bartender, and remember to keep your phone in your pocket. There are some nice people here to chat with so enjoy.

Yelp
I was in NOLA for Mardi Gras... my phone was stolen. I was asked for my vaccination card, which my partner had a picture of on his phone... I was denied entry. I'm standing at the door, and all these white guys are allowed to go in with just a picture, but I'm NOT since I'm Latino, and I have an accent. I was discriminated against, and was told to leave the premises.

Yelp
I live in the neighborhood and have for years. Due to being married with a kid, it is extremely rare that I am able to venture out. Walked in here and the bartender was a straight up asshole. I hate using profanity on a review of the place, but the guy was a literal asshole to my friend and I. Won't be going back ever.
google avatar

Peter K.

Yelp
One of the best and fun bars in the area. The minute, you walk in you feel welcomed by the patrons and bar tenders. The place for me is relaxing and the drinks are great priced. So worth the trip each time I go!

A.C. A.

Yelp
Bartender wouldn't serve me because I didn't give a good enough tip. He was rude. I had a few beers, tipped $1 on each bottle.

Yelp
DRAG QUEEN BINGO with the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. What a BLAST! I think I gave them all my dollahs, and played bingo for houuurrsss. Great, friendly crowd, strong drinks and BINGO! The person who said "don't go in here if you're female" - honey, just don't be a bitch and you'll be welcome anywhere. This place is GREAT!!!

Jeff W.

Yelp
Went there for an afternoon beer recently and paid with a $10 bill. The bartender (who was an a-hole, btw), insisted I gave him a five, and short-changed me. Took my beer and left. I won't be returning.

Yelp
This sure was an unexpected but wonderful find! A group of friends and I wanted one more drink before calling it a night around 2 am but after getting a drink and getting settled we were there until almost dawn. The beer selection was really good, fellow patrons very friendly, and our bartender Remy was wonderful. Would highly recommend for good times and good drinks!
google avatar

Yelp
The bartender downstairs made this amazing $4 Beefeater cocktail that changed my life. He did screw up my other drink, twice, but it was 80% Absolut and also $4. Bless that bartender. Upstairs offered many opportunities to make good and or bad decisions in the wee hours. The Phoenix gives you a slightly scaled down version of Chicago's Touché.

Yelp
Mike is the best at this bar... OMG do glad I came out tonight to have a drink... He and I go way back and he's a sweet man.. love you gurl!!!!!!

Yelp
In keeping up with tradition, it's time to make a shout out to all of you coming down for Dickadence! Just outside the quarter is this amazing bar called the Pheonix and I believe you should pay close attention to it. Owned by a great dude named Clint, who not only runs a great place but who has also managed to create a nice atmosphere to lose your entire trip in, you'll find everything you can possibly need here. From great bartenders to great.... Video cleaner , I think you must make this stop a priority if you haven't already. Amazing people, amazing drink prices and all without having to enter the quarter.... Cheers!

Yelp
I think Wayne may be the sweetest bartender I've ever met in my life. Super rad dive bar,, can't wait to go back

Yelp
My 2nd time was better than the 1st time. Lots of fun upstairs ! Had my hands full, if you know what I mean. I really like this raunchy bar. The men are hot. The bartender is a bear ! GGGrrrr. I had Bourbon & 7 , think it was about $ 4. a drink. I got there at 9 pm on a sat. and stayed until midnight. Take a taxi. Don't walk the streets alone.
google avatar

Yelp
My favorite bar in New Orleans! The drinks are awesome, always feel welcome. And upstairs after 10 is THE place to be. Best drink ever was a Black Lemonade! Strong!
google avatar

Raydolph Z.

Yelp
Maybe I visited at the wrong time, I didn't see anything special about Phoenix other than the dark room upstairs.
google avatar

Michael J.

Yelp
My favorite bar in New Orleans! Friendly staff and even the customers are very friendly. Has a 70s feel to it... not that I was old enough to go to a 70s bar but it is what I would imagine it to be like. Love it!
google avatar

Leon P.

Yelp
Oh okay this place is a must visit!!! I know you thinks its off the b.street. but it is worth it. From the super nice bartenders and the great prices on booze. And in store with fun products and upstairs is amazing!! I met Rocco Steele!! So yea hot men! Are there.ill be back!!

Yelp
I didn't get to spend as much time here as some of the other bars in the city which will bring me to my first and only negative comment. This bar is a bit off the beaten path if your staying near Bourbon St. Catching a cab there was pretty simple after Mardi Gras was over but during Mardi Gras with the crowds you would want to wait until later which by than you've already gotten settled into other bars. Now with that said if the biggest complaint I had was getting there you should know I loved this place when we finally made it. Super friendly staff and patrons. Cheap but very strong drinks. The upstairs bar is where all the action happens and believe me action happens. From a guy seated next to me at the bar naked who politely reached around to "welcome" me to new orleans to all the other patrons behind the little walls that divide the space between bar and play area. Sadly we only had one night here but when we come back to New Orleans this will be are go too bar.

Yelp
Had a great time at this neighborhood bar. Very friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Good music too. It was my favorite bar in New Orleans

Yelp
Great neighborhood Gay Bar w super friendly bartenders including the oh so handsome and friendly downstairs bartender, Tony who was so sweet & professional when my drink got mixed up.... The crowd is mature and leather leaning but not super uptight about it. Upstairs there's a dark sexy bar w porn and lots of horny guys my friend was using his cell phone up there and was politely asked to stop by the barman (they have a policy against cell phone usage) Adjacent to the downstairs bar is a room behind swinging doors, where the night I was there, there was a fetish scene going on w/ small furry stuffed toys on the ground..... There's also a small leather pro shop where you can stock up on dildos, leather jocks, high socks n slutty underwear (!) All and all I give this one 5 stars for being different and subversive and pretty damn cool!

Robert B.

Yelp
Beware of thieves who pick-pocket. Had my wallet stolen out of my front pocket. Bar staff didn't really care.

Chris J.

Yelp
This was a great bar! I found the patrons and bartender downstairs to be cranky. Upstairs in the other bar was way different. Every hanging out," and having great conversation and cold drinks. The bartender up there was polite and very charming!
google avatar

Brian S.

Yelp
God, I don't know where to start with this place. The first time I ever visited New Orleans was August 2008. I spent the last night of that visit at the Phoenix getting completely trashed here. This was the gayest bar I've ever been to because of the upstairs bar. The upstairs... as Patrick G put it, was some Dennis Cooper shit. I've never actually read Dennis Cooper, but after looking him up, I completely understand what Patrick G means. This was definitely my favorite gay bar in NOLA. It's got a lot of personality and plenty of locals. Best of all, after you're completely wasted you can drunkenly waltz into Gene's Po Boys across the street and get a po boy.

Yelp
The reviews on here seem to paint a scary picture where you may not feel comfortable seeking this place out. I couldn't have been more surprised by the welcoming nature of both the staff and the patrons. They were having a crawfish boil while we were there, and they taught us tourists how to eat them, and gave us a big container for free, which we thoroughly enjoyed while drinking some solid local beers at the bar. We spent far more time here than we planned, and we'd go back here in a heartbeat upon returning to New Orleans. We even bought a souvenir in the gift shop!

Mike W.

Yelp
If you like a no-nonsense bar with affordable drinks and friendly bartenders, this is the place. Neighborhood bar feel downstairs. Up the tight stairway is the second floor. No pretense up there with the dim lighting and care-free attitude. The place is also cash-only. There was an ATM on the premises but it was broken during my visit. If you're staying in the area of the French Quarter near Esplanade, this is a convenient 15-minute walk. I can't wait to go back! We were cautioned to be careful at night but we walked home at 1:30 and it was fine. Just keep your eyes open as you would late-night in any city.

Bearmanii B.

Yelp
Just out side the Quarter you will find the best leather Bar in New Orleans. Weekends are a great time to visit. Always welcoming
google avatar

David H.

Yelp
I visited while on a business trip in New Orleans. The downstairs bartender was friendly and poured generously. The bar is cash only which is a challenge for those that don't like to carry cash. There is a sign posted that says no photography which should be changed to "Don't ever pull your phone out". After having a lengthy conversation with the upstairs bartender (bar labeled as the New Orleans Eagle) that I'm one of the managing partners at The DC Eagle he proceeded to come back to me to tell me to put my phone away. I wouldn't take a photograph of your fisting social as an owner of an Eagle. I'm well aware of etiquette that should be followed while in a leather bar. I'm simply trying to figure out which song I'm going to play next on the jukebox next since the patrons that come in don't seem to want to strike up conversation. So after being told to put my phone away I'd much rather find a place where people actually want to interact.
google avatar

Michael B.

Yelp
My husband and I both had a great time at this bar, a lot of nice people with lots of action, my only problem is the bartender could have been a little bit more informative about smoking. When we walked in the bartender rushed over to us to tell us that smoking was not allowed so we wen't back outside the bar, a regular patron of the bar noticed how he handled it and came out side to let us know that there is a smoking patio in the back and gave us a tour of the bar. We look forward to going back again.
google avatar

patrick g.

Yelp
The raunchiest, hands down, of the gay bars in town. The upstairs is something out of Dennis Cooper. If you don't know who he is, don't bother going up.
google avatar

Caroline M.

Yelp
Lives up to it's reputation. Warning- not for the faint of heart, or close minded. Went with my sister. We were staying at the Olde Town Inn, and it is just down the road and open late. My sister had one seriously Strong mixed drink. I stuck to beer. Downstairs was kind of slow that night, so I took off to the upstairs. Very dark, Very Scandalous! Met some really nice people at the bar, watched an entertaining movie on their TV, and saw other things going down in the corners. Was asked if I was a man, don't think they get many chicks up there. That said, I wouldn't recommend you grabbing a group of your girlfriends and heading over to the Phoenix. I felt welcomed enough, and had a good time.
google avatar

Nicholas J.

Yelp
These guys, and this bar, have rep'd my tribe for a long time. For those well adjusted homosexuals, and our fun foibles.

Jim C.

Yelp
I like the downstairs bar (Phoenix) as they have events for the patrons. The staff is friendly and the drinks are good. I was there during a puppy event, which was new and different for me and my husband. HOWEVER.....dont go upstairs unless you kept your cell phone and wallet somewhere else. There are pickpockets up there, that will rip you off. The staff knows this occurs often as they make announcements to safeguard your valuables.
