Los Angeles Standout Phoenix Dessert Expands to San Diego - Eater San Diego

"Known across greater Los Angeles for its specialty Asian sweets, Phoenix Dessert opens in Kearny Mesa this weekend where it replaces Snoice in the Clairemont Mesa Boulevard complex that also houses Yakitori Hino. Pacific Coast Commercial facilitated both sides of the lease. Owner Elena Chang and her family oversee an empire that began almost 60 years ago in Chinatown when her in-laws opened the still-running Phoenix Inn, one of LA’s classic restaurants, which is centered around Cantonese cuisine. More than 30 years after its founding, Phoenix Inn branched out to Alhambra, where Chang developed a new dessert menu after attending the Cordon Bleu. Eventually, the family opened a dedicated dessert shop next door and now operates nine Phoenix Food Boutiques that blend dishes from Phoenix Inn and Phoenix Dessert. The Kearny Mesa location is the company’s first outside of the LA area, an expansion spurred by demand from customers who often drive up from San Diego for Phoenix’s desserts, says Chang. Though it will offer select savory items like soy-marinated chicken wings, curry fish balls, and crispy shrimp rolls, the shop will mainly focus on its premium desserts. Among its bestsellers are fresh mochi, including green tea mochi with black sesame filling and strawberry mochi with red bean filling, as well as mochi durian rolls featuring Thai monthong durian. There’s also longan or Hong Kong milk tea ice cream, mango shave ice, and passion fruit panna cotta. Other specialties include dessert soups in flavors like black sticky rice with young coconut, red bean and lotus seed, and black sesame, for which the kitchen roasts three types of sesame seeds and grinds them into a silky textured sweet soup. Phoenix also serves drinks, ranging from an organic kumquat and honey refresher to a coconut milk-based beverage with sago pearls and fresh mango, watermelon, and honeydew. Chang tells Eater that if all goes well, she can foresee the company opening up two more Phoenix locations in San Diego." - Candice Woo

Google
There are more Phoenix Desserts in the LA areas that I've been to before. Very happy to find this one in San Diego. It's a small shop with limited items and a few small tables inside. I always like their mochi and their custard with different flavors. They're all delicious especially if you have a sweet tooth. There are a few HK street food and a few cold dishes available. The cold tofu platter, the chicken wings, and samosa are all good. The curry fish ball is a bit disappointing and wish they use the white fish balls that are not fried. Be aware they only get shipments from LA on certain days, so they can run out of certain popular desserts. It would be nice if they open more locations.

Google
Amazing shrimp rolls, Black rice dishes, Portuguese Beef Stew, and an awesome drinks! Go here! Try everything!! Great service by a kind, helpful lovely woman! We were offered samples & ended up getting what we sampled!

Amazing authentic Asian desert and street food ( all fruits are freshly cut )I love pork belly, fried UNE and shaved ice , mango palmeo drink is a must try .. and finally the silk tofu that you can only find it here … also the freshly made waffle.

Great match mochi with black sesame filling! The black sesame pudding was a bit harder than I would’ve preferred but I’d come back for the mochi.

I’m dying for their durian rolls!!! If you are a durian lover and seeking for durian desserts, this is the place to go. The mochi skin is thin and there is full of durian meat inside, I’m addictive to this. I also tried their other pudding desserts before, they are delicious as well, especially the coconut black sesame one. Their barley tea is good too. I recommend!

This is a late post. We went to Phoenix Dessert in San Diego on grand opening day on July 8, 2023. Finally, this LA chain dessert shop has landed in San Diego. We used to drive up to LA just to get their coconut mixed fruit drink and black sesame soup and small desserts. This new shop has ample parking located in a stripe mall. There was a small line going into the shop. Employees were friendly, helpful and welcoming. They gave us sample desserts to try. The shop is clean, bright ambiance and much smaller than the ones in LA areas. There are limited seatings inside, but also have outdoor seatings as well. Not a place to accommodate large groups. We ordered the mixed fruit delight drinks, mango rolls, herbal tea, black sesame dessert soup, various mochi balls, curry chicken and stewed pork belly and rice. The drinks have chopped up mixed fruits and coconut milk and were good as expected. Black sesame soup was barely warm enough so it’s disappointing but we did like the taste and smooth texture. Mochi balls were soft and stretchy and delightful to eat. Curry chicken was ordinary. Herbal drink was very refreshing, clean tasting and light but this drink was an acquired taste for sure. The stewed pork belly was surprisingly delicious, savory, not greasy and paired well with rice. However, we didn’t like to pay $2 for a small bowl of rice. Rice should accompany an entree dish in our opinion. We wanted to try the chicken wings but they were already sold out three hours after the opening. This location offers only a handful of hot entrees and not like their LA locations. They have packaged cold cuts and side dishes. We will come back to try other desserts and dishes. and hope they will add more hot dishes and specialty Hong Kong style dishes/food to their menu and bring the true Hong Kong street food experience to San Diego.

Google
Delicious food. Curry chicken was great! They just opened a few days ago so the service is a bit slow with the hype and everyone being excited about this LA brand opening in San Diego. Their delivery from LA was also a bit late which caused some of the hot savory food orders to be delayed and cause longer wait times. It may be wise to wait a couple weeks for them to work out their staff protocols and delivery schedule but would highly recommend otherwise. Will be back to grab the curry chicken and thai style mango sticky rice again though, but probably in a month from now :)

Google
As a durian lover, I wouldn’t recommend this place. I tried the combo durian rolls, and they were disappointing. It wasn’t fresh and tasted watered down, which made the mochi soggy. The coconut flakes on top didn’t pair well with the durian flavor either. If you’re looking for good durian mochi, I suggest going to Yiko Yiko instead.

Yelp
This is my new favorite dessert place. I have been here twice already. I like their selection and they have some unique desserts that I have not seen elsewhere such as durian desserts and different varieties of sticky rice. I am not a fan of durian but I came here with two others who do like durian and they liked the black sticky rice with durian. In my two visits here, I got the black sticky rice with coconut, black sesame, and the coconut and purple yam jello. I got the rice and sesame hot which I really enjoyed. The jello was also delicious. I also tried a little of the mango pomelo drink. Very refreshing. Both times I came, the person working there was very friendly and helpful. I had a hard time choosing from their wide selection. The place has a few tables inside and outside. They also have some savory entrees so I'd like to try those one of these days. So yes, I would like to return here.

Yelp
I am always looking for new dessert locations in SoCal. Found Phoenix last night. I tried the Mango Roll - solid 5 stars. Fresh sweet mango inside. Wrapped with a thin cake coated w coconut flakes! Come on who would like this. They have Durian Rolls also! Didnt try because my guest isnt a fan of the fruit! Also tried a 4 pack of Panna Cotta. - 3/3.5 stars. For me, nothing special. The Mango Panna Cotta was a disappointment. Crunchy non ripe mango pieces inside. The Coconut Black sticky rice was the best. Creamy sweet rice filling. The Coconut Ube was very good. Sweet and smooth Ube w coconut "jello". Yummmm Passion Fruit Panna Cotta was refreshing. Not too sweet w a clean passion flavor. They have much more on the menu. I will be back to try different items! Mochi, Fried Ube Mochi, Wings, Surf Clams!!! And drinks galore!!

Yelp
Been wanting to try this place for a while now. We got the durian roll and assorted coconut pudding. Durian rolls were really good, so much durian inside, skin was not too sweet and had the perfect thickness. The outside also had coconut flakes. For $7.95, it was really filling and indulgent. The gelatin was also not too sweet; got the matcha, taro, coconut and black sesame flavors. Flavors were great. Would like to try other flavors as well. Service was fast as they just hand you the desserts from the cooler. Parking was also easy. There is not a lot of seating available inside.

Yelp
Refreshing desserts to eat on a hot summer day! I ordered the mango pomelo silken tofu and it was delicious and not too sweet (fitting of Asian desserts). I also ordered the durian mochi and rolls which were very pungent but tasted so creamy and decadent. The soy milk was also rich and slightly sweetened. Lastly, the fried ube mochi balls were made fresh to order and came out crunchy and hot! The ube flavor could be more stronger and a bit sweeter too. The staff were very friendly and brought our orders to us as we waited at the tables.

Yelp
Customer service is always welcoming!! They let us taste test a couple of products and it's delicious!! The place has seating indoors and outdoors. The indoor is a little small but cozy. They have ready food, cookies, soy milk, and different tea. I really like the soy milk and the tea. I tried the sago, but it was a bit undercooked. I've tried it twice, but I didn't like the undercooked sago. The durian mochi is yummy. I've also tried a couple of the jelly, and that was good also. I hope they fixed the sago situation because they have delicious drinks.

Yelp
Very kind and not busy! The employees were very friendly and offered us samples when we came in! The coconut jelly dessert sample was refreshing and something I plan on getting the next time I visit. The Mixed Fruit Delight is a nice, mild dessert drink that comes with fresh fruit and sago. The flavors don't clash but there also isn't a strong flavor from any of the fruits. The texture of the sago and fruit work well together.

Yelp
Lots of parking spaces in the evening. Most of the other stores in the strip mall closed already. The area was fairly dark and quiet. Indoor and outdoor seating available. Employee was quick to attend to us when we were looking at the items behind the glass. We got the mixed durian rolls and they were delicious. Mochi was soft. Durian was fresh fruit. In addition to desserts, they also serve food and drinks which we'll have to come back and try.

Yelp
Went to try out this place and realized it was where Snoice used to be! Walked in and the young ladies immediately greeted us and offered samples. They were so sweet and we had a great time trying out the samples and choosing what we wanted. We haven't been to the location in LA so we have nothing to go by but we were pleasantly surprised. The atmosphere gives off a Jamba Juice vibe, light and refreshing! It is well lit and the interior was cute and simple! We purchased the variety Durian Rolls, a Pomelo/Grapefruit pudding, and the Variety custard. Loved everything for the most part but the custards were my favorite! Definitely will be back!

Yelp
I'm so happy to find that this dessert place finally open in San Diego. I got the durian rolls and it is so good. There are a lot of durian inside and it's worth the price. I also got the mixed fruits drink and that is perfect as well. Great customer service. I will definitely come back here again. The place is cute and they display the stuff so you can see it easily.

Yelp
I was very excited to try this place out. I was looking for these specific mango mochi rolls I was seeing on social media. I looked this place up and decided to stop by and to get some goodies for my niece for her birthday. They are super fans of mochi. They are in the Clairemont Mesa area and once I got there, there was plenty of parking. I did get a good spread of items to try: 1. Coconut Mango Rolls- (this is the reason I decided to come here) Mochi on the outside dusted with coconut, Mango on the inside with some type of soft filling. These were delicious. I would definitely get this again. 5/5 2. Green Tea Sesame Mochi- These were ok. I expected the sesame to be sweeter. 3.5/5 3. Fresh Mango mochi- These weren't terrible, the fruit was a bit unripe and firmer. I was expecting softer, sweeter mango but I am sure it's not always in season. 3.5/5 4. Passion Fruit Custard- These were pretty good, I did enjoy the sweet and tartness. 4.5/5 5. Mango Pomelo Delight- Sweet and tart, no wonder why this is so popular. 5/5 6. Mango custard- Pretty good, not as good as the Passion fruit custard. 4/5 I did like that they also have a food menu and traditional hot desserts too. I will have to try some of those items next time. Service: 5/5 Ambiance: 4.5/5 Food: 4.3/5

Yelp
Came here because I had a huge durian craving and ordered the Durian kaya roll for pickup. The girl helping me was super helpful and said there was a promo going on and all the items were durian so I ordered from there as well and got the durian sago milk. The durian sago milk was super good and the durian kaya rolls were just alright. They're like mochi with custard and durian inside but I found them to be kind of bland compared to the drink and even by itself. Prices are really reasonable and it was empty when I went. Also, the lot had plenty of parking. Would come again

Yelp
I ordered a variety of things on this menu and was not disappointed. By accident I got the mango dessert, and that was a good accident. It was not too sweet and the portion was perfect. It was a mixture of different toppings that meshed super well. Totally my go to now for a sweet but not too sweet dessert!

Yelp
Established in the mid-1960s, Phoenix Dessert has now made its way down to San Diego with the first store located in the Crossroads Center of Kearny Mesa where a short-lived Filipino dessert chain had operated. The business seems to have a solid following of enthusiasts with a dozen locations in the LA area. During the soft opening last month, the line stretched well outside the front entrance. The inside of the suite had limited seating with a few tables and a countertop by the front window. I had never visited Phoenix Dessert before so the mix of savory and sweet offerings plus drinks was intriguing. Mango and durian seemed to be prominent fruits used in the desserts. With the word 'dessert' in the business name, I did not expect Curry Chicken and Portuguese Beef Stew as menu items. Small fried appetizers are more common for Asian dessert shops but not entrees like those above. On my first trip, I ordered the Assorted Mochi which came in four pieces and a Mixed Fruit Delight for a drink. The fresh mochi flavors in the package were mango, green tea black sesame, red bean, and black sticky rice coconut milk. The little balls were the softest mochi I have ever tasted. The black sticky rice coconut milk was the most unusual flavor of the group. Fresh mango, watermelon, honeydew, tapioca, sago, coconut milk blend, and shaved ice were the ingredients in the Mixed Fruit Delight. The mixture was naturally sweet from the fruits and much healthier than my normal fruit green tea with boba pearls. I bought a Fresh Fruit Delight and a Marinated Tofu Platter on the next visit. Mango was my pick of fruit for the drink which had the same other non-fruit ingredients. The cold platter was a plastic container filled with several strips of fried tofu skin, slices of marinated tofu, seaweed, and soba noodles. The tofu and noodles were fine, however the seaweed had a really strong flavor that overpowered everything else. The variety of choices was impressive for this dessert chain while the quality of the food and drink was above average. Those aspects and the reasonable prices were the reasons why I rated my two experiences at Phoenix Dessert with a four star rating.

Yelp
Awesome to see Phoenix expand to SD! The employees were friendly - a gentlemen with owner/manager vibes shared that this is their first location outside of LA county and overviewed all the best items on their menu. We opted for the Mango Lovers dessert soup, which was so tasty. The mangos were sweet. Coconut noodles were chewy and delicious. Overall, it was a delightful, refreshing item. We also enjoyed the mango mochi rolls. The texture was perfect, very fresh, and pleasant. The shopping plaza has plenty of parking and there was no wait when we arrived. Absolutely recommended, and I can't wait to return!

Yelp
First off: WOW! The drinks were just so amazing! I opted for the mango, coconut milk, sago. My son had their mango lemonade. Not too sweet but so packed with flavor. To know that they are using fresh ingredients in making them was just even more amazing. The fried shrimp rolls were so plump, juicy and jampacked with filling! The sweet, sour and spicy sauce on the side was an even bomb dot com accompaniment. Beware it is piping hot! And also takes the appropriate time that it did take to make. The ambiance: clean, modernized and roomy. They also have outdoor seating! This place caters to the perfect snacks and/or desserts. Especially in this humid summer we've been having here in San Diego.

Yelp
As someone from Hong Kong, I'm so excited to find a place that specializes in Hong Kong dessert and street food! There are lots of different options - drinks, cold dessert liked panna cotta, steamed milk, mango rolls, hot "soupy" desserts, egg waffles, ice cream, and more. Today we tried the egg waffle and mango coconut roll. EGG WAFFLE: I've tried lots of egg waffles in the US but never found ones that taste authentic. This one from Phoenix is the closest I've had - good taste, fluffy inside each piece. If the crust was crispier, it would be perfect. MANGO COCONUT ROLL: This is kind of like mochi but has a big piece of cut mango and custard, wrapped with a mochi exterior. The staff mentioned this was their #1 best seller and it was really good! Refreshing and not too sweet or heavy. Staff was very friendly and courteous. Environment was clean and had some indoor and outdoor seating options. Looking forward to head back and try more items!

Yelp
We found the mochi heaven at Phoenix Dessert. They have so many varieties of mochi that will satisfy most mochi lovers. We tried all sorts of fresh mochi but the one that really stuck out was the coconut mango rolls. They used fresh mango and the mochi was doughy, thin, and incredibly tasty. Their Mango Pomelo Delight drink was a little pricey but worth it. The location is not an ideal spot for the Clairemont food scene but there was plenty of parking.

Yelp
I used to eat at Phoenix all the time growing up and was so excited to hear that they opened one in San Diego. Although it's not the full restaurant, there's some meals but they focus mostly on the desserts, as the name implies. Plenty of parking here but way too small of a seating area. Our orders came out in to-go containers so I think their theme is more of a grab-and-go kind of establishment. Curry Fish Balls: Comes with 6 balls, pretty light curry flavor. While the fish balls had a nice, bouncy texture, I thought the curry was a little lacking. The curry by itself was good but it just didn't really stick onto the fish balls. Other than that, it's a nice snack. Mixed Fruit Delight: I would always get this drink, back before milk tea really blew up. There's bits of mango, watermelon and honeydew, mixed in with sago. The base is a sweet, coconut milk blend. This tastes just as I remembered, super refreshing on a hot day! Silken Tofu and Mango: Also known as douhua, the tofu is super silky and creamy. I normally enjoy this with the sweet, ginger sauce but the mango is a nice change! There's a ton of other mango desserts and durian if you're into that! I also love their Maltose Glazed Pecans (which they gave samples for) and the Peanut and Anchovies.

Yelp
If you're thinking about driving to Irvine for Hong Kong desserts, DON'T. Phoenix Dessert is a 626 staple specializing in Hong Kong style desserts. Much like the other HK dessert cafe that no longer exists, Phoenix Dessert does the same but BETTER! I feel like they have an expanded menu in comparison to the previous cafe in SD. I grabbed the assorted mochi and the black sticky rice with durian. In comparison to one's I've head before, the mochi was light and flavorful. I don't think any of the flavors were overwhelming and fits in the "not the too sweet" bin of desserts. The surprise for me was how QUICKLY I ate the durian black sticky rice. I wouldn't consider myself a durian maniac. I dabble but I've never fully consumed an entire helping of durian. I'd eat half a durian mochi and call it a day. I never found it repulsive but it also seemed like a task. Phoenix Dessert's bowl of durian in jelly and coconut milk(?) was a blend of sweet and tropical that kept me scooping up a bite one after the other. The only critique I have is the pre-made drinks. I bought the HK style milk tea and I'm not sure if people from Hong Kong likes their milk tea ALL tea with a hint of milk but that was my impression. I'm not a heavy tea drinker and I'm used to the usual Americanized version of milk teas. It could be just my expectation not matching the reality but, I wish I could've ordered the milk tea custom to my liking. At least I'll know when I come back how much sweetness I'd need but since these are pre-packaged, I would personally have to try EVERY drink to find one my taste buds would agree with. Overall a solid cafe. Come if you love mango desserts or just craving something NOT TOO SWEET.
google avatar

Yelp
Perfect place to visit to satisfy sweet tooth cravings. The desserts here are perfectly sweet and not overwhelming. I love how a lot of the desserts here consist of exotic fruit and Asian dessert flavors. As someone who is not fond of Durian (respectfully), I wanted to step out of my comfort zone and get Durian mochi with coconut flakes. It was SO good. Thanks to Phoenix Dessert, I want to expand my taste buds for other Durian-flavored treats. Service was quick and very friendly. The ambiance was simple and the store had an L format of seating available across the open visible kitchen. I found the prices to be very reasonable. Parking is easy to find as this place is located inside a plaza.

Yelp
We went in to only try the mochi. It was okay. I didn't like the coconut covered part and the only one that didn't have it, was a flavor that I don't care for, so I was disappointed. The service was excellent and very friendly. The place is very clean, too.
google avatar

Jessica L.

Yelp
I was SO EXCITED when they opened in SD! I grew up with their locations in the 626 area, specifically Rowland Heights. This location is a small store but still has many of the desserts and drinks that I love. My favorite is the durian mochi with coconut flakes; it's one of the only stores I know that consistently sell durian desserts. I also got their jello platter and my favorite is always the one with purple rice. The flavors are nostalgic and the prices are not extreme compared to other places that sell fresh fruit desserts. This location doesn't have as many hot food items, but they still sell the cold side dishes like spicy cucumber, marinated pig ears, tofu, etc. If you're stuck on which drink to get, PLEASE try the mixed fruit tapioca drink that contains coconut milk, tapioca, honeydew and watermelon bits! So refreshing and satisfying.
google avatar

Hannah W.

Yelp
this place was too overhyped tbh. knowing it's a big chain in LA, I had high expectations for a new Hong Kong style dessert cafe and was sad that it didn't live up to the hype. I got the mango pomelo tofu, which was really sweet. the mango overpowered their house made tofu and I think I got like, a dozen pomelo kernels in my bowl. you can get better versions of this at hui lau shan. I didn't try their mochi or other desserts so maybe I'll give them another chance? it's also kind of pricey for what it is.
google avatar

Yelp
First time trying this place and I love it ! There's so many dessert options and there's also some street food as well. The interior is clean and well-kept. The staff are patient and friendly as well. My friend and I ordered: assorted mochi, mango coconut rolls, mango delight drink and mixed fruit delight drink. The drinks were 10/10, not too sweet but still satisfied our craving. The mochi has this perfect stretch and it's so chewy The mango roll was also yum, I can see why it's popular. Will be back!

Yelp
Located in the same lot as Carl's Jr and Rubio's test kitchen. I'm so happy they opened a location in San Diego and everyone here is soooo nice!! They were also patient while we were trying to choose what to order! It was a hot day on the day we went and I was super impressed when one of the staff asked if I wanted ice packs under my bag to keep my items cool since I was driving at least 20 minutes to my next destination! As for their desserts, I love their mochi and puddings! My fave are the fresh mango rolls or mochi. The mochi skin is Soo soft and perfect amount of chewiness while the Mango inside is never tart and it's not overly Sweet at all. Their sago pudding is really good as are their fresh made tapioca and sago desserts. They also have a variety of small snack items as well. Def a solid place for asian dessert and will be coming back!

Yelp
Paid by card. Phoenix Dessert is located in a plaza and offers plaza parking. I went in on weekend afternoon and there were a couple people there so I didn't have to wait long. They have a lot of items available and it took me a while to decide, but the cashiers were nice and patient. There aren't a lot of places to sit here so you should plan to eat elsewhere if you have a medium to large group. I tried the lychee ice cream but didn't care for it much so I ended up getting the mango pomelo sago, mango mochi, and black sesame and almond pudding. Yum! My favorites were mango pomelo sago and mango mochi. (If you like durian they have durian items here!) I would recommend this place and would go back.

Yelp
We were browsing Yelp reviews and came across Phoenix Dessert. It's a Hong Kong style dessert place that serves many traditional desserts. The store is small, but it has a large counter area with a few small tables inside. As soon as we walked in, I was overwhelmed by the amount of options they have. From boba tea, to flavored pudding, to traditional hot desserts, savory food, and even Chinese New Year treats. Wow! It took me a while to finally decide what I want. We ordered their popular Mango Pomelo Delight and Hong Kong Egg Waffles. The waffles were great. Excellent flavor and texture. Although egg waffles look easy to make, not all places can do it well. I am not a fan of their Mango Pomelo Delight. I felt it could have more tapioca pearls and toppings. It's more like a drink than a dessert that I wanted. If I would come back again, I want to try other items.
google avatar

Yelp
This dessert spot is such a hidden gem. All the desserts were so good, not too sweet. Upon arriving, I was greeted and offered samples which was so sweet! The mixed fruit delight is delicious and creamy. The fruit rolls and mochi were great as well! Perfect texture!

Yelp
I am so happy that Phoenix has finally made its way down to San Diego!! I've been to the ones in LA countless of times and when they had one in Irvine, we used to drive up there for it. It's their soft opening right now and also this location will only have drinks, desserts, and a few small bites unlike the ones in LA. The place is a bit small and has room for 3 small tables inside. This will probably be a takeout place. My go to is the mixed fruits delight. It's chopped up watermelon, honeydew, and mango with sago and coconut milk. This time I also got a few other desserts to try. Mango roll which the owner said was one of the most popular. Can't believe I never got it before. And also got a mango pudding a friend recommended. I also tried their salt spicy wings which had a great flavor and was fried really well. Curry fish balls were also good. It did take a really long time for the hot food to come out, but I get they're working out their logistics with a soft opening. Everyone working there was super nice and I'm looking forward to coming back often!

Yelp
It's a small little place with a few small tables inside and outside. I've tried the Phoenix's in Alhambra, San Gabriel, and LA. I typically order the warm sesame desserts and durian items. This is a order, pay, call your name, pickup order and eat kind of place. As always, you can not go wrong with their durian drinks. So of course we ordered the durian delight drink, and it was good! A light and refreshing milk drink. I thought the mango almond tofu would be a little softer, but it was pretty much like jello, was ok. I also tried the mango lover (with the scoop of vanilla ice cream). The long coconut noodle jelly things were very interesting, a bit too long for me, I was slurping it up and Mango got all over me! The Portuguese egg tarts were small but tasty after being warmed up in the toaster oven at home. They also have a large variety of other desserts/jelly on display and cold dishes, we didn't try. We may be back for more durian items.

Yelp
Super friendly service! While there we got a sample of the warm Walnut soup. Tasted like a thick hearty hot cocoa. It was nice but a little too heavy for me. Delicious Mango delight coconut sago drink. Reminds me of the Chinese restaurant dessert. Whole fam thought it was perfect. We also picked up the mochi sample and mango roll. Great texture and flavors. Small place, probably not something we will come back to often. But still nice.

Yelp
I used to go to the location in LA and I'm so happy they decided to open one in SD!!! Mango Pomelo Sago Drink - Super tasty!! Not too sweet and really good for the hot weather Black Sesame Green Tea Mochi - There are some black sesame mochi that have a rather rough black sesame filling. However I was so happy that this one was on the creamier side, it was so good!!! Herbal & Chrysanthenum Drinks - These are great for the hot weather as well (and if you're Chinese it's great for Yeet Hay) Ginger Milk Pudding - I usually eat the hot version and wanted to try this cold one. It's surprisingly good! Tofu Assorted Appetizer - This was pretty good as well Will be coming back here to try more of their desserts! Service was also great and they answered all my questions patiently

Yelp
Tried Phoenix Dessert for the first time this past Wednesday afternoon. After hearing about how popular this place in LA, we were excited to try it out. There was no line and no wait when we showed up a little after 1:30 pm. Ample parking in the plaza as most other reviewers have mentioned. There were a few tables for small groups for indoor or outdoor dining, Employees were friendly and patient as we looked over the abundance of food options to try. We wanted to try the chicken wings but their fryer was out of service that day so no fried food options (sad). We opted to try their mochi treats today- durian roll, purple yam durian roll, and mango roll. These were all 10/10. The mango roll had a piece of sweet fresh mango inside, what a treat! And if you're a fan of durian, they don't skimp you on portions here! Each treat was delicious. I hope they keep the recipe the same. We also tried their egg puff waffle. This was just okay. Nothing special, and for almost $9, idk if it was really worth it because they didn't offer any toppings or syrups to go with it, so it was kind of plain. But the waffle itself was cooked to perfection. The braised beef was good. Could be slightly more tender and flavorful. And it's kind of odd that they would charge you $2 for rice, when this street food/ small eats would normally be paired with rice to enjoy as they compliment one another. The drinks were refreshing. Not too sweet. And I'd you're a fan of durian, their durian drink is super tasty! Interested in coming back to try their other desserts. Come try them out if you have a sweet tooth craving after dinner in convoy! :)

Yelp
Very glad more and more spots opening up from LA to SD. SD is in dire need for asian establishments including desserts. I finally have a place to get my black sesame soup. My friend likes to get their durian cakes which is legit. Much better than what you can get anywhere else in SD.

Yelp
They have a wide variety of Southeast Asian desserts. They have lots and lots of durian desserts, which are usually hard to find. We ordered the mango with coconut noodles, black sesame dessert soup, black sticky rice mochi, matcha black sesame mochi, mango rolls and durian rolls. Everything was delicious! My favorite thing was the coconut noodles! It's a must try! The place is pretty small, a few bar stools at the window and three small tables with short ikea stools that seat 4 people at the most. Not a great spot for large groups. Definitely more of a to-go spot. The service was exceptional! Everyone was extremely nice and they were giving away free samples!

Yelp
Waited all life long for this LA 626 spot to come down to SD! ORDERED: 1) Coconut mango roll (4.8/5) 2) Mixed fruit delight (4.9/5) 3) Mango pomelo delight (4.8/5) 4) Durian delight (4.7/5) 5) various teas (4.7/5) All items are consistently amazing since day 1 (LA to OC toSD)! Best Asian dessert spot in SD (highest quality + best price + not too sweet)

Yelp
I like the desserts here because they aren't too sweet, allowing you to appreciate all the other complex flavors! It was my first time here, and the servers helped me with some great picks! The mango mochi is subtly sweet with a juicy mango inside; the custards are nicely chilled with a muted complex of flavors in each block! Would love to come back and try other items!

Yelp
I came by to try a drink and settled with the Hong Kong milk tea. The flavor of the tea really came through and it wasn't too sweet as us Asians love. The workers were very friendly and the prices here were reasonable

Yelp
Phoenix is a well known brand in greater LA area, but their first branch in San Diego is quite horrible. Since their grand opening, I have been there a few times at different time of the day in order to gauge their true performance, but the result is quite disappointing. From savory cold dishes to their Cantonese dessert, the food quality is just not consistent. Here are a few examples. Their drinks seem to be made with whatever the staff want at the time. I ordered their signature mango-pomelo sago drink, and I got a cup of coconut milk with sago instead (it is meant to be a mix of mango and coconut). When I asked about it, the staff indicated that it was their way of preparing the drink. My friend got the same drink and hers tasted a lot more watery than mine, and was also missing mango. Making the same drinks at the same time that taste differently requires special skills, I believe. I also tried their combo pudding (multiple flavors in a box) at different occasions. Their pudding tasted slightly differently each time. The mango pudding lacked mango taste (not even artificial mango taste), and their coconut pudding tasted a bit sour at one time. It might be going bad. I think they might have an issue with temperature at storage or during preparation, and putting different puddings that deteriorate at different rate in the same box amplified the effect. Luckily, I didn't get sick from it. I ordered the bubble waffle another time, and it was completely soggy. It had a chance to be not bad, as it was freshly made, but the staff was covering it with a piece of paper right after it was made, essentially steaming it while waiting for it to cool down. The younger staffs were engaged in some intense chit-chatting when my waffle died on the counter. The batter was too sweet, and the consistency was like a mini sponge cake -- it definitely wasn't supposed to be like that. The batter was simply wrong. The only reason I gave more than one star is because they have durian desserts and I love durian, but I would not get their durian pancakes next time -- another batter disaster caused it to fall apart and made a mess. If you found this place and have high expectations based on their reputation in LA, you could be disappointed. Pick a good lucky day to go in if you decide to go.

Yelp
It's Phoenix desserts. Anyone from the SGV is familiar with them. The selection seemed ok (maybe smaller than the 2 locations in LA that I've been to), but for the most part have all the staple menu items. We got a mango dessert and some mochi and it was all pretty good. The plaza parking is one of the less busy ones in Convoy which I appreciate.

Yelp
The staff was friendly and the place was clean. We tried their Durian Roll and it was delicious. There was a good amount of durian in the roll. Will go back and try other desserts and foods.

Yelp
Guest review: SB Phoenix Desserts is one of my addictions. Yes, I have to do better, but at the same time their desserts are SO GOOD! They made an adjustment to their mango mochi recipe, and OMG! All I can say is try it. It's like clouds parting in the sky, angels singing level of deliciousness.

Yelp
I've been to one of their other locations in 626, so when I saw they opened one in San Diego, I decided to come check them out! Never been a huge dessert person, but Asian desserts hold a special place in my heart because of their presentation as well as the fact that they tend to not be overly sweet. Their assorted mochi caught my eye so I stopped by for the sole purpose of getting them. They were so cute and neatly packaged! Flavors included mango, red bean, taro, and green tea sesame. All mochi flavors were lightly sprinkled with shredded coconut flakes with the exception of the green tea sesame. They were all super soft, pretty, and delicious! Definitely worth visiting just for these. They offered me a few samples as well which I don't remember the names of, but they were delicious and I was tempted to buy them as well. Ended up deciding against the extra desserts since I had already been eating pretty poorly all week. Will definitely be back in the future to get them though! They are located in a large lot with plenty of parking. Not much seating inside, but I see myself mostly getting the dessert here to go for eating at my own pace over a few days.

Yelp
I'm from the SGV, and when I saw Phoenix Bakery, I knew I had to give it a try. I got the silken tofu with ginger and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was perfect. Next time, I'll try the Steamed egg with milk (total nostalgia) and the coconut milk and black sticky rice. I hope this place lasts for a long time, there's so much competition in this area for Asian desserts.

Yelp
I was in the mood for some mango mochi and this was the spot to go. The mochi was so fresh and delicious! The service was great and it was clean inside with a nice ambiance. 10/10 would recommend anyone to try this place out. There are many options so it's a good spot where everyone can satisfy their cravings.

Yelp
Clean place. My first time and I was impressed by the customer service. They gave me samples as I have never tried this type of desserts before expect mochi and spicy rice. I liked how the dessert was not too sweet.

Yelp
One of the best dessert place that specializes in Durian! Their durian rolls are delicious and chewy. The durian roll is made of a chewy Mochi filled with fresh durian and custard, rolled over coconut flakes. The durian roll has the perfect amount of sweetness to it. It does come with 2 rolls per tray. It is on the pricier side, but completely understand because the durian fruit itself is pretty expensive. Unfortunately, since the durian rolls are made with Mochi the texture starts to harden after 1-2 days. There was one where the Mochi was tough to eat after a day of purchase, so not sure if it's made fresh daily or I just got a bad one. I also tried the Passionfruit jelly, which tasted just like jello to me with very little Passionfruit flavoring. I was hoping for more of a passionfruit tart taste. This place sells a variety of desserts, including tea and ice cream. They also sell snacks as well. The service was good, there's plenty of staff members to help and this can get busy since it's quite small inside.
