7 Great Bánh Mì In The East Bay - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Vermicelli bowls, phở, and excellent bánh mì await at this counter-service Vietnamese spot on Telegraph. We flock here for the sandwiches, which have the usual bánh mì fillings—pâté, carrots, daikon, cilantro, a single strip of cucumber, and a generous helping of meat, grilled fish, tofu, and more. When in doubt, roll with the standout grilled pork." - julia chen 1

Google
Comfort food, Delicious & Hearty Bahn Mi, could easily be shared by two but I'm pleasantly full when I have one, side of soup is such a Bonus. But their shredded chicken Pho is so Generous on the chicken, it never disappoints, a wonderful meal on its own.

Google
We were coming back from San Francisco and stopped by this place to eat. Small cafe in a non-touristy place, very friendly staff. We ordered three different noodle soups. Everything was delicious.

Royal Gentry

Google
Ordered a chicken sandwich and was disappointed. HUGE chunks of chicken, mountain of slaw, jalapeño and cucumber looked like they were merely cut in half and thrown on there. Could I re-cut and rearrange the meat and the huge vegetables? -sure. But there's no rearranging that huge, lumpy, dry, scratchy roll. Even if you could fit it in your mouth, it's the type of roll that just RUINS anything inside of it because, you have to bite SO HARD to get though the bread. Never again.

Teresa

Google
Had the fish spring rolls, and they were some of the best spring rolls I've had. All very fresh and well executed. What makes the place exceptional is their service. Despite this being a to-go only place with a few outdoor tables, the staff manages to create a warm and neighborly environment. They even offered my dog some shrimp after her long hike. If I lived closer, I would be here regularly. Great value as well!

Ryan Jaime

Google
Excellent, fast service. Delicious, filling (vegan!) Veggie noodle soup with Tofu and house made spicy sauce. More vegan options available that I will definitely come back for including Banh Mi and Vermicelli 😋

Google
I’ve had hundreds of fresh spring rolls in my life from a bunch of different places around the US… this is by far the best place. Sometimes I order them a couple times a week. You can get them with peanut sauce or their amazing special sauce (which I do) The pho is amazing too and also the fresh coconuts

Bryan Richter

Google
Banh mi portion was very generous for the price and the pork flavor is great. The shrimp spring rolls are very fresh, but the sauce could have been better. Maybe next time I'll opt to buy the extra peanut sauce to compare.

Google
Omg!!! I can't wait to eat here again even tho the food is so good I ate so much and can't really imagine ever eating again! So fresh! Sooooo great flavors! Light yet filling and hearty and delicious all at once. Pictured: vermicelli lemongrass beef with carrots and the chicken egg rolls--enough food for 2-3 ppl!

Yelp
Woah, this spot has very good food. Small indoor kitchen with mostly outdoor eating. Clean and organized Friendly staff. Family business. Tommy is a super nice guy. He talked to me about the restaurant and how the next generation was continuing on the restaurant legacy but changing it up just a bit. They have some of the best noodle soup, the veggies were extremely fresh and that lemongrass beef was phenomenal. And the fried eggroll inside the spring roll was very original but tasty. Maybe the better option from now on!! He let me try their "secret family hot paste" for the soup and it was ssssspicy but so flavorful. Really like this spot, definitely coming back and highly recommend

Yelp
We were looking for a quick bite near a meeting in Oakland and stumbled upon Pho Sho Dough--honestly, the name alone reeled us in! It's a small takeout spot with a few seats, and even though we came close to closing time, the service was super friendly and quick. We ordered the grilled pork banh mi, the lemongrass beef banh mi, and a shrimp spring roll. The shrimp roll was unique--the shrimp was fully cooked and marinated in a flavorful sauce, not your average fresh roll, and it was delicious. Both banh mis were excellent--the bread was perfectly crisp on the outside and chewy on the inside, and they were generously packed with savory flavorful meat and plenty of pickled veggies. We brought everything back to San Francisco, and even after the drive, it all still tasted amazing. Definitely a great find--highly recommend if you're in the area!

Yelp
More of a to-go place (unless you want to sit on the curbside patio) is this gem of a Vietnamese place. It's a no frills place for the most basic Vietnamese food - pho, banh mi, and spring rolls/egg rolls. Their egg rolls are one of a kind. They're crunchy, hefty, and generous. We also got their spring roll wrapped egg rolls (aka a typical spring roll with shrimp but imagine the spring roll filled with an egg roll instead of shrimp). We also got the grilled pork vermicelli and it was a generous portion. We will most definitely be back - especially since their service was so fast. We got our food in less than 15 min! You can also call in to shorten the wait time. Easy street parking too!

Yelp
Pretty solid banh mi. $11 is a bit steep but the sandwich is filling. I also have had their vermicelli bowl and it isn't as good. It just isn't as flavorful and sort of feels like it's thrown together as an afterthought. I would only get the banh mi from here. There isn't much space to sit down, there are a few tables but I always get takeout. Service is fine - sandwich comes out quick.

Yelp
A1 Tip Top really tasty, fast service, both Pho & Banh Mi (that's all I've had yet, but plan to roam through the rest of the menu forthwith. Highly recommend. Sit outside on a sunny day, take away (as I did) or in the 2 chairs in the little venue. Everything fresh, well prepared. Pho divided up between wet, dry & bean threads. Go for it.

Yelp
Jamie W and I have been enjoying visits to the White Horse Inn on random Saturdays for a while now. We had noticed this corner Vietnamese takeout spot but didn't try it until quite recently when I was having a post-cocktail hankering for pho. Luckily Jamie was starving, too, so we ended up sharing three familiar items and having them at the outdoor table next to the big mural (photo: https://yelp.to/X_xPeJEy5i). We started with the $9.95 Fresh Shrimp Spring Rolls, which were generously assembled with lettuce, vermicelli, and plenty of split prawns encased in translucent rice paper accompanied by a sweet peanut dipping sauce (photo: https://yelp.to/_UapbYqWp6). The second item was the $9.95 Grilled Pork Banh Mi which, a soft French roll robustly stuffed with pork, cucumber, shredded carrot and radish, and cilantro (photo: https://yelp.to/xGzS28kOct). That was definitely one of the better banh mis I've had outside of Saigon Sandwich. The $14.95 Roasted Chicken Noodle Soup wasn't technically pho but Hu Tieu Ga Nuong, a South Vietnamese soup with a lighter broth and larger chunks of chicken (photo: https://yelp.to/2ioXM-lGKJ). I don't think I've had this variation before, but it was pretty satisfying. All in all, this was a nice find on Telegraph for hearty Vietnamese eats. FOOD - 4 stars...pretty tasty and quite generous AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...well, it's really a takeout spot SERVICE - 4 stars...quite efficient and friendly TOTAL - 4 stars...solid Vietnamese fare with regional variations from the norm RELATED - Exploring Oakland? Yelp
It might not be easy to tell from the picture I uploaded, but the sandwiches here are massive! I got mine with lemongrass beef. It was very flavorful, the bread was toasted nicely, and it was so filling I had to wrap up half of it to-go. It's not a huge place, but there are a couple of tables right outside on the side street (which is pretty quiet and peaceful). Service was good -- staff made sure to walk around with water refills. I would definitely come back to try another sandwich and their other items!

Yelp
Man! We missed our pho spot since moving away from the east bay! These flavors are a mix of new school meets old school! Service makes you feel like you're at your Vietnamese family members house! Super friendly and always has a joke to make you smile :) ! I've tried many things on the Menu at both locations. Our favorite besides the pho with the delicious broth is the chicken vermicelli noodle bowls! They fill that thing to the brim! Right now we're on our vegetarian hype right now so didn't get it w/ chicken this time! But trust! It's fire! If you are in the area and looking for a nice hot bowl of pho or just great food, COME HERE!
google avatar

Yelp
Got 2 bahn mi sandwiches for takeout. One chicken and one pork. It was astounding how much better the pork was compared to the chicken. I'd come back but it seems like quite a hit or miss based on my experience
google avatar

Hope M.

Yelp
We came back for round two and ordered the fried spring rolls! Honestly probably the best egg rolls I've had in a long time -- the perfect amount of crisp and the flavor was delicious!
google avatar

My-Tien T.

Yelp
Got my usual phở tái bò viên (rare beef and meatballs), the chicken vermicelli, and the humongous spring roll ! The spring roll usually comes cut up into smaller spring rolls, but we asked for the whole thing just because lols. The pho here is very flavorful and is one of my favorites so far in the bay fs. They have a variety of options on their menu and I definitely want to come back to try the others. The servers are very welcoming, funny, and answered every question we had!! How it works here is you order and pay up front and there is seating outdoors on the side of the restaurant. They checked up on us multiple times throughout our meal and brought us anything else we needed. Loved our experience here :)

Yelp
The fried egg rolls reminds me of the ones on Guam. So on this alone I'm going to give it 5 starts they are huge compared to other Vietnamese restaurants in the Bay Area. They were also tasty. You order inside and you eat on the sidewalk good if it's a nice day out. The service was pretty good and attentive.
google avatar

Angelica M.

Yelp
AMAZING experience. Phat sandwiches. Service with a smile. The kitchen was backed up, I went at 12pm sharp, but the owner personally made my sandwich and it was ready in seconds. I love the type of service Treated like a regular even though it was only my second visit since it opened a while back. I will keep this in my rotation for wfh lunch options.
google avatar

Daniela J.

Yelp
Great little banh mi spot. I got the pork banh mi. We ordered inside which is tiny but they have a few tables outside and they will bring your food to your table. It came pretty quick and the everything felt and tasted really fresh. Good size portion I was able to save half my sandwich for later. Definitely want to come back and try some of the other items
google avatar

Yelp
Wait Time: No wait for a early Saturday Dinner, food arrived 15 minute after placing order. Unique Factor: 3/5 - Proteins choices are unique to the restaurant, offerings are your standard vermicelli salads, pho and banh mi, overall a derivative of your typical Vietnamese restaurant in the Bay Area. We tried the grilled fish vermicelli bowl and Fresh Sliced Beef & Beef Ball Noodle Soup. Accoutrements and seasoning were modest in quantity and flavor. A great local spot for when the pho cravings are strong. Personal bite: Service: Mostly takeout with a few bistro tables set along the sidewalk.
google avatar

Yelp
Best pho in the Bay Area! Bahn mi's are also best in the Bay! Staff are awesome. Owner"s are great people. Check it out, I guarantee you're gonna dig the vibe. Phosho!!

Yelp
The food was excellent, the ambiance was decent, and the service was good. We had the chicken pho, and it was delicious. I would definitely go again.

Yelp
Hole in the wall pho shop in Oakland! There is no inside seating here but they did have a few seats outside so don't try to eat here with a big group. We ordered our pho at the table and the pho came out shortly after. On to the food Beef and meatball pho 4/5 This pho was flavorful and had a lot of umami. It was perfectly salted and I loved how soft and tender the beef slices were. It comes with the usual accoutrements. Fried egg rolls 4/5 These egg rolls were huge!!! Came with 4 rolls that are super long. It was tasty. The dip was a little on the sweet side and could've used a spicy kick. I also wish it had lettuce to eat it with. Overall, delicious pho spot with a decent amount of food!! Definitely would come back.
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing! Wonderful service, delicious food, generous portions, beautiful service, I can't wait to be back!

Yelp
So I gave them another try today with my chicken pho, owner was so friendly and the Vietnamese iced coffee was amazing. Prices are good too. I love the cash discount I know for next time.

Yelp
I really enjoy this restaurant, so much so that I have ordered from them a few times now. Their ingredients are super fresh and the portions are very generous. Their Grilled Shrimp Spring Rolls, Fried Egg Rolls, and Shredded Chicken Pho are really good (the roasted chicken pho is good too, but I prefer their shredded chicken which surprisingly isn't dried out to oblivion - it definitely is one of my most ordered items from this spot). I tried their Grilled Pork Sandwich today and unfortunately it was not good at all compared to other places I have had this sandwich at and not something I would order again. The bread really is what killed the sandwich for me. It didn't have a crispy exterior which is a quality I love in this type of sandwich and was rather dense vs. being airy. I get it that I likely sound super picky, but I have had some amazing banh mi sandwiches in my lifetime thus far and this was just not one of them. The bread's density really overpowers the ingredients in it. The pickled carrots also didn't seem to be pickled long enough as their flavor was rather flat and sweet with little to no acidity. Overall this is a great restaurant that I will continue to visit especially for their shredded chicken pho.
google avatar

Stephanie Y.

Yelp
I have eaten at Phosho Dough countless times and it's always a solid bet at reasonable prices. I love their take on eggrolls that are huge, crunchy and meaty. Their banh mi's are fresh and bountiful, albeit a bit small. Their vermicilli noodle bowls are flavorful and their pho broth is great. Where I'm not a huge fan: The shredded chicken in their pho always leaves me a bit unimpressed where I actually for the second time don't eat it. It's usually a bit dry and has a weird aftertaste. I usually take my eats to go and it's always prepared super fast. I've seen a few people enjoy the few sidewalk tables. Overall, solid Vietnamese eats in the area at really great prices.
google avatar

Rachel Z.

Yelp
i ordered from here for delivery and both the pho and chicken noodle that i ordered were good. i was incredibly sick and these two items got me through the night with its warm brother and lightness in the broth, full of flavor but tame enough to soothe a sore throat.
google avatar

Austin W.

Yelp
The pho at Phosho Dough is fantastic. Pho is all about the broth and the broth here has a lot of depth to it and is full of flavor. If you're a fan of spice, definitely pay the extra for spicy sauce -- it will make you sweat. The portion size of the pho here is quite large. Between my wife and I, we shared a single bowl of pho and an order of the spring rolls and we were stuffed. Speaking of which, the spring rolls here are as good -- if not better, than those found at Brodard in SoCal. The fried egg roll inside is such a great crunchy textural element to the spring roll. For $10.25, I would happily order this as my meal. Ordering is done at the counter and seating is outside along the sidewalk. If you're looking for a great bowl of pho without the frills, this is the place to go.
google avatar

Yelp
What an awesome Vietnamese spot located on Telegraph and 66th. The hip and creative wall art work both on the inside and exterior of the building. A relaxed atmosphere with outside tables. And the simple yet delicious Vietnamese cuisine they serve make for a good dining experience. The menu is straightforward and it's pay at the counter before dining (which is the only way to do it in Oakland these days). We ended up ordering: Pork vermicelli with egg roll: this was a generous serving size. Lots of tasty morsels of savory pork, noodles & veggies mixed with their fish sauce. You will be satisfied after eating this one entree. Lemongrass beef pho: this was my wife's order and she said it was really good. Once again very generous with the beef and noodles. Pork banh mi with extra meat: this weighed about two pounds. Probably would have been fine with the regular amount of meat but go hard or go home. A solid banh mi. I would prefer if they had daikon and more original ingredients. The banh mi had more carrots than Bugs Bunny, so they get knocked slightly for that. The service was excellent and attentive. I can't wait to come back, Phosho Dough.
google avatar

Joanne L.

Yelp
this place is another hole in the wall restaurant off telegraph. Best for takeout, limited outdoor seating only! Hands down best viet food I've had in Berkeley so far. The portions are great and makes the price worth it. I ordered the chicken vermicelli, which is a go to order since it's relatively consistent wherever I go. The chicken was juicy and perfectly cooked. My friends got other vermicelli variations and they all looked great too! We sat outside and our food came out in a decent amount of time. The workers wiped down the table for us and provided all the usual condiments as well.
google avatar

Greg K.

Yelp
I had their fried egg roll inside a fresh roll... which was an interesting variation on a common item... and provided lots of yummy crunch, which I highly recommend.
google avatar

Valerie D.

Yelp
Generous portions that are some of the freshest tasting Vietnamese in the areas. Really delicious vermicelli bowls. Don't sleep on the tofu bowl.
google avatar

Torrey B.

Yelp
Great banh mi!! So fresh and flavorful. Also, the guy at the front counter was so hilarious. They really seem to be having fun and that joy makes the experience even better.
google avatar

David R.

Yelp
Went to meet up someone from Facebook market and seen this place , phosho dough was koo and fast service food was delicious and on point , had two sandwiches one chicken and the other pork also had the fried egg roll with some clear wrap and was bussin lol , definitely worth the price and drive since I came from concord ,
google avatar

Zack K.

Yelp
Consistently great food, excellent service. Small business. Get the pork noodles, they're amazing. Both traditional and some new-style; feels very Oakland, in all the best ways.
google avatar

Mary Jane P.

Yelp
Great spot to grab some good food and eat outside. Super friendly staff. They kept checking on us to see if we needed anything. We ordered friend egg rolls Fresh sping rolls grilled chicken and shrimp Grilled chicken bahn mi Lemongrass beef bahn mi Fresh limeade Iced coffee Everything was delicious
google avatar

Claire O.

Yelp
Dare I say it: I think this is the best banh mi in the Bay Area. I've never even bothered to order something else on their menu (although I've heard from friends good things about their pho) because I know their grilled pork sandwich is going to be so dependably good. Fresh, crispy, and pillowy baguettes. They do not skimp on the meat or the other fillings like cucumber, cilantro, pickled vegetables. The portion is so incredible for the price that I'm torn between gatekeeping this place and telling everybody I know about it.

R P.

Yelp
Great family-run storefront Vietnamese food. Come for the spring rolls and stay for the pho!
google avatar

Madeleine Y.

Yelp
Pho was bomb. Been looking for a good pho place in Berkeley because I heard the ones closest to campus aren't the best. The broth had a lot of depth and the portions were great! Our waiter was so nice and he was all by himself when we came (right when they opened). We got to sit outside and it was a beautiful morning so I loved it. Would definitely come back here and highly reccomend for anyone looking for good pho in Berkeley.
google avatar

Lori G.

Yelp
I got the fish banh mi and fried egg rolls. Both great! The sandwich was absolutely stuffed. Now that I found them they'll be part of my regular rotation! Service was fast and friendly as well.
google avatar

Stephanie A.

Yelp
Food was pretty fire! Literally spicy, but delicious! The lemongrass in my surf & turf was amazing. This is pho on the next level, you can tell the owner's desire to experiment with flavors that can elevate your palette experience. Service was cool, it got busy quick but the servers were fast on creating tables outside for us to sit. The ambiance was so chill- no indoor seating so sitting outside on a Sunday morning in a quaint Berkeley neighborhood was delightful. Come check them out!
google avatar

Denisse P.

Yelp
Food was great. They have a good amount of vegan vegetarian options. Outdoor seating. Small spot but worth the visit. Very attentive servers.
google avatar

Marcy S.

Yelp
Yummy yum yum yummmms. If you have a special request, don't be surprised if they don't hear you. Like literally you're telling them in their face and they are not able to accommodate for some reason. I had a friend in the hospital who just wanted noodles and broth and I told them noodles and broth only. But for some reason, they just did their normal thing and their normal thing is amazing. Just disappointed when I needed a little special care that they weren't able to accommodate

Yelp
First let's start with the name! It's so Bay Area I love it. I've ordered from here a few times and love that on lunch I can come down the street for some great food. In the past I've had the chicken pho and the veggies are so fresh! Another time I had the grass fed beef banh mi and it was delicious I always like to get peanut sauce for dipping cu it's so good. Today I had the fried egg roll wrapped in the spring roll! Y'all my back is never getting unbigged lol. It was so tasty. The flavor, the freshness and crunch just drove it over the top. My favorite drink from here is the limeade it goes with everything. I haven't seen my regular guy behind the counter that I've interacted with plenty of times but he is so nice love his vibe and love how patient he is when I have a million questions or placing a big order for work

Thanh T.

Yelp
First time here after hearing about it through a friend and it did not disappoint. Being that my partner and I are vegan, we had the veggie noodle soup. The fried shallots on top were such a great addition to the very fresh broth. I usually don't see that with much Pho, so that was a great surprise. The veggies in the soup also had the right amount of softness, with the perfect crunchiness. Also paired with the Fresh Young Coconut, which had so much juice and was served in a coconut (even better). I was bummed that I had finished my meal so fast... Thank you Mahi and the rest of the staff for the great service and hospitality. We are excited to return soon!

Suzie N.

Yelp
My reviews of more than less than a year should be of the San Pablo site. A few weeks ago I went with two friends to dine in. They had the beef soup and they said "delicious ". I had a vermicelli bowl with grilled pork and extra jalapeno peppers. OH YUM and much too much so brought home and enjoyed the next day! The dine in is clean and tables are nicely spaced especially with COVID still around and I'm old so a concern. Thank to this restaurant as my friends and I lost time and were there for almost two hours. The folks were attentive the whole time with water and NEVER gave us the eye to leave.
google avatar

Elena E.

Yelp
The eggrolls, pho, bun, and banh mi are all incredibly tasty but what makes this place special is 2 things: fantastic protein choices and excellent customer service. The grilled fish and grilled pork are crazy delicious and every time I pick up, the food is ready early and everyone who works there is super sweet... today they were just giving out free Thai tea and limeade! Incredible.
google avatar

Bethtina W.

Yelp
Total hole in the wall...in all the best ways. The service was pleasant and quick. The food was beyond bomb. I got the chicken banh mi and my gf got the shrimp and chicken pho with extra veggies. It was reasonably priced considering it's the Bay Area. If I return I would definitely try the pho.
google avatar

Joyce C.

Yelp
phoshodough so lit. not only is the name fire, the food as well. the banh mi was especially bang on the buck with the large portions, yummy taste, and it being less than $10. i couldn't finish tbe banh mi alone so i ate 3/4 and shared the rest. perfect portions after sharing both dishes. the spring roll is actually two spring rolls cut in half hence the 4 peices on the menu. so portions were smaller than expected. would come back again for the banh mi and id love to try the vermicelli bowl. the outdoor seating is also nice on a good day, might be a little windy though
google avatar

Bryan M.

Yelp
First time in. We've been going to Pho Ao Sen for 15 years. Decided to change it up and try Phosho Dough and it's 100% our new spot. Food was delicious. The service (which we did not expect for counter service) was amazing. We were asked at least 3 times how the food was and if we needed anything while were sitting outside. I can't recall a counter service restaurant that provides this level of service. Do yourself a favor and go try it. You won't regret it!
google avatar

Juwan D.

Yelp
I heard about this place from my esthetician. I figured I would give it a try since I am new to the area. It did not disappoint. It's a very nice spot right on the corner of the street. There is some outdoor seating for anyone wanting to dine there. There is a spot inside as well, but it isn't as big. I love Banh Mi so when I saw they had a fish one I had to order it. I also ordered a shrimp one for my husband. Out of the two we both really enjoyed the fish one best. I am definitely looking forward to getting a vermicelli bowl when I go again!
google avatar

Frances C.

Yelp
It's a 3.5 stars The presentation is pretty and innovative with spring wrapped in fried egg rolls You kinda eating healthy and enjoying the fried egg rolls When I picked up my order it was hot, 10 minutes back into the office it was still crunchy but on my 3rd and the 4th egg rolls the outer layer on the rice paper started to be rubbery hard to chew into it The fried egg rolls were good and with the spring wrapped it feels very refreshed Hope when I try it again it will be be a better experience
google avatar

Samantha D.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite affordable spots. I get the grilled fish banh mi or spring roll. I love love their fried egg roll wrapped in a spring roll And then I love getting a side of broth. It's delicious. The grilled fish is so tasty too. I haven't had a banh me like it before. Highly recco coming here.
