Today around lunchtime I was driving on San Pablo Ave and wanted something quick to eat, so I walked into Phosho Dough. The place isn't big, the décor is simple, just like a typical small Vietnamese shop. I went in around 1 p.m., it wasn't very busy, and I found a seat and ordered right away.
I got a bowl of beef pho and a pork banh mi. When the pho came, my first impression was that the portion was slightly larger than what most Vietnamese places serve--more broth and noodles, but not so much that you can't finish. The broth tastes quite authentic, on the lighter Vietnamese side, not oily or heavy, and the seasoning is balanced. They give a decent amount of beef slices too; even toward the end there's still meat, not just noodles. Overall the flavor is straightforward but good--something you'd probably order again.
The pork banh mi was a pleasant surprise. The bread was toasted just right--crispy outside, soft inside, not too hard. The pork has good flavor, seasoned in a traditional way, and they add slightly more pickled veggies and cucumbers than usual, so each bite has good texture. The sandwich is a bit larger than average, filling but not overly heavy.
Looking around, most people seemed to be ordering similar items. Portion size definitely seems like one of the strengths of this restaurant--not huge, but just a little more than average, enough to feel satisfied. The prices are also reasonable, especially for this area.
The environment is clean and simple, nothing fancy, but easy to eat comfortably. This is the kind of place you come for convenience and reliable food, not for ambiance.
Overall, today's meal was good: authentic flavor, reasonable prices, slightly larger portions, and filling. It's not a place that blows you away, but if you're nearby and want Vietnamese food without spending too much, Phosho Dough is an easy, low-risk choice. I might come back next time to try their spring rolls or other noodle dishes.
