The Best Restaurants in Sonoma County - Eater SF

"Nearly hidden in a strip mall outside of downtown’s bustle, Piala serves cuisine from Georgia native chef Ketevan Mindorashvili along with co-chef Irma Hernandez and wine director Jeff Berlin. Lavash wraps burst with grilled chicken shashlik and spiced walnut spread, lettuces and roasted beets are brightened with house-made yogurt and tahini, and a warming stew of lamb’s head and neck seasoned with parsley and fenugreek reflect flavors both homey and fresh. Grab a seat at one of the family-sized tables for a glass of fizzy Malvazija pet nat and get to know your neighbor — that’s part of the joy. Berlin’s partner in the restaurant is Lowell Sheldon, who previously faced allegations of sexual harassment and assault, which he denies." - Christina Mueller, Eater Staff

I only review places that deserve it, and Jeff's Piala certainly earned a shout-out. Great music, great service, and again, GREAT food! Everyone in our party more than enjoyed eating here. Do check them out before they close in 9 weeks! Thank you and best of luck from the guys!

Piala is Sebastopol’s best-kept culinary secret. Each dish offers a hearty bite, with each chew made with love. I’d recommend starting with the soft, doughy minced meat dumplings. To eat in traditional fashion, pinch the tip of the dumpling and nibble around some of the exterior to sip the juice, and then eat the rest! There’s also the tender pork belly dish that’s perfectly seasoned, soft, and warm. The chicken skewers are amazing too. The best part of this culinary experience is playing with flavors by spooning some spicy chili or sweet plum sauces over your proteins—and top it all off with crunchy, tangy pickled onions that’ll balance the richness of other dishes and provide a refreshing textural contrast. 10/10! 😁

Google
TLDR; really good quality food, everything is consistently good. We came here for dinner (no reservations) because my aunt raves about this spot all the time. It’s a small place so expect seating to be tight and to bump chairs against other tables. The food was really really good. We ordered the chicken skewers, bean stew with cheese cakes, mushrooms, the kale dumplings, a plate of pickled vegetables and several flatbreads. The stew, skewers and dumplings really stand out - highly recommend getting these.

Google
What a great and interesting dining experience! Really a dynamic exploration of flavors. For such a culinarily-rich area like the Bay , rarely does a restaurant explore such niche cuisines, and do so in such a resounding, refined and pleasant manner. The staff was attentive, knowledgeable, fun and seemed to really enjoy working there and with each other. We ordered the beef and pork dumplings, the lamb wrapped cabbage, and the chicken liver/hearts, with a glass of Georgian wine. All outstanding and I cannot wait to explore the menu further.

Google
Well, this was a real treat! We got in late to town and this was the only place that was open and boy!! What a surprise! Real authentic Georgian food! Wow! If you are somewhere around here and hungry? This is your place. Something completely different and so tasty! Enjoy

Google
Really authentic Georgian place! Wine selection is amazing and outstanding quality, love to come here to grab those "orange" wines. Food is ok, not mind blown. Only complaint I have is that the last time I went I ordered the same wine from my previous visit since I loved it and it was corked and instead of giving me a new glass he tried to convince me that it was the natural "funkiness" of the georgian style. Like dude I work in the industry, tasted thousands of bottles and the corked flavor is a fault that really you cannot confuse. You have an amazing place, dont ruin it by trying to outsmart people who are trying to support you. Will still keep coming just fyi.

Google
I had been dying to try this place for a while and finally had the chance. Small unfortunate note is they do not take phone orders. Anyway, we ordered the meat and kale dumplings, the lamb kabobs, the mushroom dish, and the masa cakes with beans. I love mushrooms and beans but they were very one note and need something vinegar or citric based/pickled to counter act the one note flavors. I thankfully had some around and it made a huge difference. The yogurt sauce with the meat dumplings were killer.

Google
Finally, authentic Georgian! So glad we were recommended this place by Bernie of Merry Edwards. Highly recommend the dumplings - all except the beef and pork are incredible. the house chili sauce is fire, and the new fruit punch is incredible. Can't wait to revisit and try something else on the menu. Also love the chill bro who served us. Thanks again for the hospitality!

Yelp
My wife and I were so happy to discover this restaurant. The food was incredible. We shared the Kebabi (grilled beef & lamb skewers) and Kiwi Cafe (appetizer plate). The appetizers consisted of five exquisite sides to complement pieces of flatbread. Each was flavorful and unique, from cold savory fried eggplant to the roasted beets with sour cherries. They were so tasty that we ordered more flatbread to go with them. The only downside of this small restaurant is the noise level. It was quite loud throughout our dinner but everyone was clearly enjoying the food and conversation.

Yelp
I have never been more put off by a restaurant in Sonoma County than I was last night. My friend and I decided to celebrate her birthday at Piala Georgian Restaurant. I arrived a few minutes before she did, and Jeffrey (the server and/or owner) barely looked up when pointing to a table. When we asked which dishes were most popular, he curtly responded that he changed the menu items roo often for that ro even be a valid question. So without muich input we ordered 3 "dumplings" for $15, a mushroom dish for $26, and a side of crispy cheese bread for $9. My friend had a single glass of sparkling rose which turned out costing $15. When we finished our meal, we were told to pay at the counter at which time I was told I owed over $84. I could not figure out how those items added up to that so I requested an itemized tab which is the norm in the industry. Jeffrey told me they don't provide an itemized bill, so I needed to scroll down on his tablet. When I did, I spotted a service charge of 20%. Since I have only seen this done for parties of 6-8 or more, I was sure it was an error and asked why it was on there. He curtly (again) informed me that all checks are charged 20%! I asked where that was posted, and he replied it was on the backside of the menu. When I looked, it was at the bottom of the beverage page. I can't imagine how many patrons have double tipped uunder these circumstances without knowing! What a scam! The sad thing is that the food was good. But the whole time, this "Jeffrey" acted like he was doing us a big favor serving us! I will never go back to expose myself to such rudeness and ripoff practices! Good riddance from my perspective. There are way too many other restaurant owners who appreciate their customers!

Yelp
An absolute gem. Don't be deterred by the strip-mall locale, which FWIW you forget about almost as soon as you've entered the lovingly designed and decorated space. It's been a long time since I was so surprised by a dining experience in the Bay Area. Obviously Georgian food isn't exactly ubiquitous, so we expected a change of pace... but we were not prepared for the combination of exciting AND homey that was on display at Piala. It honestly became a frequent topic of return conversation the rest of our weekend in town. There's no need to get into detail on every dish - just do yourself a favor and take a one-night break from Sonoma Californian fare to explore a meal that will leave you looking for an excuse to come back.

Yelp
I came here with my husband and best friend. We ordered the appetizer selection to share, and then also ordered a few other things, including a duck with vegetable dish, some fried potato/cheese things, dumplings, and a mushroom dish. I was happy with the variety of gluten-free dishes here. The flavors were almost all new to me, and the food was made with fresh and high-quality ingredients. It was really fun to try new cultural dishes, and I really liked the duck with vegetbables. Some of the foods were a little too spicy for me, but that wasn't surprising. Staff was friendly and professional, and the restaurant was clean and cozy feeling. Parking was easy and the place wasn't too busy when we stopped in. If you're interested in trying new dishes, I highly recommend Piala!

Yelp
The ambiance inside is cozy and comforting (wooden tables and dark interior lined with clay jugs and wine bottles), while the food and wine are unique and interesting. First time trying Georgian fare and I must say their khinkali dumplings, particularly the crab and adjika butter, were simply divine. A squeeze of lemon and dollop of the adjika sauce (fermented chili sauce) enhanced the light and subtle taste of crab in the soft dumpling wrapper with a complexity of flavors. The khachapuri stuffed with melted cheese and herbs was savory and also paired deliciously with the adjika sauce. The chvistari & lobio (crispy cheese filled cakes & bean stew) was nice because of the unusual flavor of the beans. Maybe we liked it a little less than the other dishes because we couldn't use the adjika sauce on it. (BTW, they do sell the sauce in jars to take home in case you can't get enough.) We didn't like our dessert of the pistachio honey cake as much because we found it a bit dry, although the pistachios were nicely crunchy. We enjoyed the Kazbegi iced tea and the robustness of the rose wine (chinuri shavkapito) with our meal Wonderful place to travel with your tastebuds!

Yelp
I was excited to find out there was a Georgian restaurant near my friends while visiting them, so I recommended we stop in to try during happy hours (3 to 5 and 9 to closing). The Georgian cuisine was presented and made well. It's a cozy, rustic chic feel for indoor dining and decor. Everything we tried was tasty and hearty: khilkhani: meat or veggie dumplings, olives and pickled garlic, Pkhlovani: khachpuri bread stuffed with cheese, greens and herbs, Chvistari & lobio: masa cheese cakes and bean stew, kebabi: grilled skewers of beef and lamb, shashlik: grilled skewers of chicken marinated in pomegranate. The Georgian wine we tried seems to be more fruity and sweet in general but went well with the grilled meats we ordered.

Yelp
Looked on Yelp and thought - eh ok, not many choices on the menu. Drove up and thought - eh, located in small strip mall. These are all red flags for my - I was actually blown away by this place. I love trying different regions cuisine and this puts a check mark on Georgia - located in the South Caucus region of Eastern Europe. Two weeks ago they did not take reservations so we got there a little early (PRO TIP: they now take reservations and you should make them). We were able to get a seat - really tight seating on the small tables against the wall, you will definitely be on the back of your neighbor. Cool homey interior with a Retail Wine Sales room. We started out with the small eggplant rolls - wow! Amazing! The flavors burst on your mouth - one of my favorite dishes. Next were the dumplings - wow amazing (PRO TIP: put some of the red sauce on the table on them - super good with a little kick). I tried the bean soup - a little flavorless but the dumplings are really good. Mushrooms were amazing. Both deserts are great. I definitely put this on my list to come back to - see you soon Piala!

Yelp
Fantastic experience! A friend wanted Georgian food for his birthday. This was an excellent place to sample a variety of foods. It was easy to eat "family style" and share different menu items. Small place, family owned, great service, good wine menu. Would definitely go back. A unique experience.

Yelp
I was very surprised to learn there was a Georgian restaurant in our midst and also that they didn't serve fried chicken with biscuits. Kidding of course. This is place is super tasty and very authentic feeling. The restaurant itself is decorated in a variety of different items from the owners ancestral home. Delightful time and really cool modern/Georgian style adornments. We sat at the huge family table and ate family style. The service was great and thanks to all of the wine...I think we became family. Perhaps to the changrin of all the surrounding patrons. The wine is distinctly Georgian and made in terra cotta pots...very sharp tasting and a byproduct of an 8000 year wine culture. The food is delightful. The dumplings are delicious as was the burek (a type of bread) stuffed with meats or cheese. The sautéed mushrooms are super earthy and delicious. Love the sauces on the table...spicy and herbaceous. An amazing restaurant overall and a nice respite from everything else in Sebastopol.

Yelp
We arrived in Sebastopol late and found Piala when we were looking for places that would be open past 9. We are SO glad we did! We had an incredible time. From the amazing food to wonderful conversation with the very friendly and generous owner to the awesome playlist. It was a meal we will remember! (See the delicious pistachio honey cake I enjoyed for dessert). Run don't walk!

If only there weee 10 stars. Jeff has prepared a culinary experience that is relaxing, enjoyable as it is delicious. The music transported me to another place and time. Will be back. Check out happy hr daily 3-5! Cheers~

Yelp
One of the few really exceptional restaurants in the area. I've been here four times, and each time just blows my mind. Everything I've eaten is divine. Some favorites: the chicken skewers with marigold yogurt, rabbit and sour plum dumplings, Lamara's Garden salad (seems simple but is so delightfully complex and bright). I always get the house tea and the cake for dessert. The ambience is pleasant and the service is solid. But it's the food that really makes this place sparkle. Highly highly recommend, your taste buds and belly will thank you.

Yelp
Piala has comfort food worthy of a visit in the Sebastapol area. Touted as the first Georgian restaurant in the Sonoma area, Piala serves food that has been described as a mixture of European, Persian, Turkish and Mediterranean cuisine. After thoroughly enjoying the Georgian food in the South Bay, I was excited to find that Piala was opening. Located in an unassuming strip mall, entering Piala almost feels like being transported into a cozy home. On the front of the menu, I would say much of it is vegetable forward dishes but there were a few meat dishes. On the back, there was a generous list of wines and drinks available. Here is a list of things I had with rating: Pistachio Honey Cake with Tangerine Glaze & Whipped Cream (4.5/5) Their only dessert was the most memorable bite of the meal. The cake itself is lightly sweetened but made punched up with the tangerine glaze and then mellowed out with whipped cream. I would have loved if the cake were a little more moist because it felt a little dry but otherwise the taste combination really sold it for me. Soko (4/5) While it reads as a simple mushroom dish, it was nice that it had a variety of mushrooms for different textures. It was a little bit salty but the flavors from the herbs really gave it an interesting flavor profile. Pkhlovani (4/5) With flaky pastry baked with cheese and greens, this was a nice counterbalance to the soko. Slightly creamy with a little bit of crunch from the crust, it was nice comfort food. Chashushuli (3/5) This stew of lamb was good but nothing amazing. As one of the few meat entree options, it was a bit small and lacking lamb. The stew itself is homey with nice flavors and plenty of potato and tomato. Glad it also came with sourdough to pair it with. However, if you are looking for something to fill you, this would not be it. Khnkali, the spiced beef and pork dumplings (2/5) Perhaps had too high expectations having this also at Bevri. These were much smaller and heavy handed on the salt. If I were to come back, I would try one of the other versions to see if they are better. In terms of service, it was okay but felt a little disjointed. Felt bad there was only one person handling everything out in front. Please note that all service already comes with 20% gratuity on your bill. Overall, Piala is a good worthy visit especially if you are curious about Georgian food and you are in the Sonoma area.

Yelp
Wow! We love Piala! There are so many delicious things to try! The food is really interesting and unusual to a typical American palate. Piala's food is based on Georgian cuisine, and the foods use interesting and unusual blends of spices. Everything we have tried over numerous visits has been very fresh and flavorful! Some of our favorites are the mushrooms (soko), the dumplings, the trio of Phkali (a trio of pureed vegetables served with bread) and the khachapuri (stuffed bread). The selection of imported wines are spectacular, and we really enjoy the selection of amber wines they offer. It is always a satisfying meal! If you are in the Sebastopol area, and interested in trying something delightful and unusual - Piala is a must-try! I would normally share photos, but the lighting in Piala is kind of dim and intimate - and my photos didn't turn out well enough that I felt they were worth sharing. I will update later if I get some suitable shots!

Yelp
First time experiencing delicious Georgian cuisine and wine. All of the dishes, the dumplings, Pkhlovani and curd pancakes-- all delicious. Great ambience and a wonderful conversation with the Chef! Looking forward to my next visit!

Yelp
Fabulous atmosphere. Felt like home. Amazing food. Staff was very friendly and courteous, went above and beyond to make us feel right at home. Chef came out and greeted us in person. We are definitely recommending it for home authentic comfort food.

Yelp
Wonderful experience. Had the crab dumplings (Khinkali), pie stuffed with cheese/greens/herbs (Pkhlovani), beef and lamb skewers with sumac yogurt sauce (Kebabi), and the pistachio honey cake for dessert. Lots of options for those who don't eat meat. They have a few beers available and a wine list that showcases Georgian wines. I had the red wine flight which was super interesting and I'll try the white wine flight next visit. Real high quality wines that expose you to a world outside of local producers. Service was great and there are 7 tables inside (one is really big) and bar seating. By the time we left, every table was full! Chill vibe and a cool addition to the local restaurant scene. A must try.

Max S.

Yelp
Incredibly dissapointing. Drove here from San Francisco with reservations for 6pm. Arrived at 6:05pm and there were FOUR tables available. Was told by the staff that they only had bar seating available. Looked at the bar--it was incredibly crowded and definitely not a big enough space to fit two additional people. A group of four came in AFTER us and got a table BEFORE us. Same thing happened about five minutes later. Terrible service and missing basics in restaurant operations.
google avatar

Sher L.

Yelp
It is obvious the owner is never there. Our order got messed up due to the waitress being too busy eating and hanging out with her friends. The waiter guy, who was dressed for a welding position on an off shore rig, seemed a little irritated with us that our order was wrong. The food was okay, not good. The topper was being told that a 20% tip was added to our bill. I usually give that much but to have them tell me what the tip is and charge me for it is unacceptable. I have never heard of that with a party of 2. I bet its not even around in a year.

Yelp
There are good "food" restaurants in Sonoma County, there are good "value" restaurants in Sonoma County and there are good reasonable wine lists in Sonoma County. Combine all three and the list of possible restaurants falls off a cliff. Very happy to report that Piala Georgian Cuisine clicks all three boxes and adds in friendly informative service as well. What is Georgian cuisine? Georgia borders Turkey, Armenia etc and the menu borrows from each and the surrounding area. The concept is small plates (that are not very small) that are meant to be shared. We asked how many for two and were told about 3. We wound up ordering 4. Khinkali, Georgian dumplings filled with a spiced beef and pork mixture were tender and tasty, good start. Trio of Pkhali were eggplant stuffed with spiced walnut paste and terrines of beets, carrots. This was good, maybe the weakest of the four but still worth ordering. Smoked country ham with crusty bread and green peppercorn mustard was a hit. Really good. Last dish was Mtsvadi, grilled pork belly tossed with cilantro, red onion and chili flakes. Another excellent dish, flavorful and perfectly spiced. Also a very large portion. Absolutely stuffed no room for dessert. We almost always bring our own wine (old NJ habits never die) but there is no need to at Piala. They have a large menu of delicious Georgian wine at $24.00 to $30.00 dollars a bottle. We each had a glass, white and red and both were delicious. There are a few Sonoma wines on the menu but don't do it. Georgian wines rock! Service was great, we didn't know a lot about the cuisine and wine but all questions were answered with some good additional information. Finally, We had a feeling that Friday evening there would be busy, arrived 5:30 and the restaurant was 3/4 full. 20 minutes later the place was packed with people waiting. No reservations taken and their policy is to add 20% to the final bill which is fine by us. Really enjoyed our dinner at Piala and will be back soon!

Yelp
We just had lunch at this restaurant and loved it. Authentic Georgian menu, excellently prepared food. Sautéed mushrooms and beef/lamb kebabi were our favourite. My son loved dumplings and home made flatbread. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Absolutely love this new restaurant in Sebastopol. The wine is unique and excellent, and the dishes are to die for. And the prices are very reasonable. I'm going to butcher the Georgian names, so I'll just describe the dishes in English. We first ordered the appetizer small balls. We've had these in other Georgian restaurants, but these were much more full of flavor. They also came with micro greens. The highlight of the meal was the mushroom sauté dish, which had locally harvested mushrooms and tasted incredibly fresh, combined with some herbs and spices. Then there was the lamb and chickpea stew, and the spinach and cheese pie. Both were very very flavorful. The desert was a tea cake with fresh whipped cream and mint and walnuts, everything tasted very fresh. I would definitely return here, and look forward to it.

Yelp
We decided on this place for lunch, no reservation needed per yelp and website, wait time said to be 5 minutes. We were a party of 4, once we walked in we were told they were fully booked for the day, mind you that i Only saw two tables taken, however after speaking with the chef/owner, we convinced him that we wouldn't take more than 40 minutes to eat once the food was served and that we were exited to try some of their dishes, finally he agreed. We ordered several glasses of Jorden imported red wine and several dishes, the chicken kabobs were delicious, the lamb stew was also nice, the bean stew was very bland. It's not a big menu what you see on yelp is no longer there. I guess it's good that they don't over season the food, the fermented chilli sauce they provided did wonders to everything it touched! , we also got a mushroom dish that was hefty and delicious also Dungeness crab dumplings along with the other veggie dumplings. We were trying to rush because they were expecting several parties to arrive. The service slowed down after we got our food and as time passed we noticed other walk ins were getting seated with no hassles? Bigger parties than ours? I mean the owner came out to tell us we couldn't sit till we convinced him, so why was it that these other customers didn't get turned away as well? Anyhow after witnessing this I mentioned to our server that we were ready to pay so that we could clear the table, it was raining hard and still the place had several empty tables, this had me feeling some type of way, uneasy... Not the welcoming environment a good business would give. To be honest I've never experienced something like this. I'm glad I tried the food but the treatment in the beginning has me doubting to ever go back or to even recommend it to visitors in the area. Our server was friendly after he got to know us a little and so was the other young lady that was helping. One recommendation I can make is to please update the reservation status to: reservation only. No walk-ins, to prevent uncomfortable situations like mine.

Yelp
Amazing food! Amazing wine! Even more amazing service! Seriously worth a special trip. Highly recommend the dumplings and the Pheasant's Tears red wine if you enjoy natural wines.

Yelp
Such a great find. We just happened upon it passing through. The food was delicious and unique and the owner took his time to explain the menu. He clearly had pride and love for it!

Yelp
I went here with a group of my friends to celebrate my birthday. I'm very familiar with Georgian Cuisine and visited Georgia several times, so I had high expectations and was not disappointed. All of my 7 friends were really impressed! We had vegetarian friends and meat lovers with us and they had plenty of options for everyone. We had such a wonderful time, chef himself recommended wine for us (we loved all their wines) and brought every single meal to us personally. In the end he made my day, by sharing a a very special drink! Such cozy restaurant has a special family vibe! It was super packed but Autumn did such a great job serving us. My friends said that they did not mind 20% included gratuity, but they wanted to leave more, because she was amazing! We will be coming back 100%!!!

Yelp
I was delighted to dine last night at Piala Georgian Cuisine with a couple of friends. The restaurant decor and ambiance is casual and welcoming. The menu is succinct and different, in a very good way. We ordered beef/pork dumplings, Soko Mushrooms, Katmis Shashlik, Pkhlovani, the Flatbread, and the Roasted Beet & Butter Lettuce Salad. Every dish that was delivered to the table was fantastic. Absolutely delicious. The wine selection was limited, I was a little taken aback that they did not feature Sonoma County Wines. That said we tried one of the Georgian Wines and it was outstanding. We will be back. Great dining experience and our waitress Lilly was attentive and extremely knowledgeable.

I love this place. The vibes give off hearty and cozy and home-y. The food is super good too. The staff is also super kind and welcoming.

Yelp
Authentic Georgian food and good hospitality. I spent a couple weeks in the Country of Georgia pre-pandemic and the food I had here was very close to what I experienced in the country. The meats, salads, breads, etc. The main difference is they didn't do the cheese boats with the quail egg here, but did more of cheesy bread. That is the one thing this I didn't find authentic based on my in country experience. I had a flight of Orange wine and it was okay. They store the wine in a cold room by the front windows, so the clear bottled wine might have been light struck a bit. The service was fantastic and I really like that they add a 20% service / gratuity charge and tell you and don't ask for a tip again on the receipt tape.

Yelp
Exciting restaurant executed well. Super nice staff that are happy to walk folks through the food and wine menus. Everything was delicious, especially the dumplings and the appetizer sampler.

Yelp
I'm wondering why the owners decided on the Georgian theme because the place doesn't show understanding or love for the Georgian culture. It's basically an American restaurant serving dishes made according to recipes of Georgian food. If you are looking for Georgian ambiance, then you are likely to be disappointed. If you are bored with the usual food and dishes and want to try something on the exotic side (like a mixture of liver and heart) then Piala might be a good experience. They also serve Georgian wine and have a small wine shop. My friend was somewhat upset about the service, which was dry and impersonal, unlike the traditional Georgian spirit that is marked by genuine hospitality and warm attitude.

Yelp
Let me tell you. I am not a fan of a lot of Sonoma county food let alone the options in Sebastopol. Piala surprised me. The dumplings were super tasty. The skewer was perfectly cooked- tender- goodness. The owner has occasional specials that are not Georgian cuisine, and he let us know he had gumbo. I love gumbo. I am very picky (was not impressed with gumbo in NOLA). The flavor, texture, and heat of this gumbo was delicious. The colossal prawn in there was the most juicy- tender shrimp I have ever had. They can cook here frfr. Please go and support.

Yelp
I stumbled into Piala while driving down Healdsburg Avenue. I had never heard of it. The owner and staff members were all warm, friendly, professional and eager to introduce Georgian cuisine and culture to their patrons. The food was so delicious that i ate lunch and dinner there in the same evening. The lavash wrap and dumplings were both solid winners. And if you aren't afraid of organ meat, i highly recommended the chicken hearts and liver. Finally, don't forget to pair your food with a delicious glass of Georgian wine! You can order flights if you're in the mood to try more than one at a time. Addendum: Here are few details I forgot to mention during my initial review. * Piala has separate lunch and dinner menus, so be sure to pop in the afternoon AND evening to try both menus. * Don't forget to try the hot sauce. It is incredible. Lamentably, this place is kinda far from San Jose. If I lived around the corner, I'd probably visit way more often and spend more time exploring their menu.

Yelp
Wow, this place brings great flavor to each bite. Over the past few years I feel that it's been hard to come by good tasting food in Sonoma County, especially Sebastopol. If you are looking for quality food that is reasonably priced, this is the place. The owner was very kind which made the experience all the better.

Yelp
We had an amazing happy hour at piala enjoying the dumplings (kale ricotta was our favorite and suggested by our server), wildly good cheese plate, tasty chicken skewer and more. Also tried the Georgian wines (ambers) which we both really like (I like dry wines). Server was lovely, and service was fast. Must do in Sebastapol, looking forward to our next stop-in with Happy Hour into dinner.

Yelp
Embarassingly good. By that I mean, the flavors were so delicious and unique and astounding that I literally moaned with delight throughout dinner. This gem has yet to be truly discovered...go now while seating is available. The atmostphere is inviting and casual and cozy. The food...is fresh and delicious and herb-y. Each bite of each dish was a flavor explosion of orgininality. They combine flavors we know but in ways we are not familiar with. We had: Khinkali, traditional Georgian dumplings Pkhali - walnut paste terrines. Delicate, beautiful, delish Shemfsvarf Gogra - winter squash roasted in cumin-coriander-ginger butter. (I wanted to lick the plate. Jeff kindly brought us some bread to sop up the sauce.) Soko - Mixed fresh local mushrooms sauteed in herbs and chili flake. Oh my! WIne: Piala has an extensive selection of wines from Georgia. Along with some US wines. The appreciation for wine is evidenced by a glass enclosed room up front that is devoted solely to wine. The portions were generous and the prices were so reasonable, particularly for this area and these crazy times. I've already rhapsodized about the flavors. The menu changes up with seaonality. Jeff, owner, was a former owner of A Cote in Oakland. He has travelled Europe following culinary flavors and fell in love with Georgian fare. He and his team of chefs from Georgia are celebrating authentic fare and the love they have shows in the food and in the atomosphere. I live an hour away. If I lived closer, I'd reserve a table.,.. weekly. But I will go out of my way to go back ...and soon. I can hardly wait!

Yelp
I have been eating and hunting for places like this all my life, dinning at a restaurant is not always about the food, it's about the experience, the place and who runs the show. Jeff I can't thank you much for the great experience that you made me experience. The customer service was outstanding, and the food was exactly what I was looking for." "I was so pleased with the flavor I received from your plates. Believe it or not I didn't even looked at the menu he went above and beyond to find what we like to eat. I was very impressed with the quality and the style of this place. People Give it a try you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
We were 1st timers. Our expectations were not met, given the number of 5 star reviews. The food was good, but the portion sizes did not match the price. Kitchen is small, so had to wait quite a bit for our food since we had a group. The kicker was the suprise 20% surcharge added on by them when it came time to pay. If this was their policy, it REALLY should have been stated ahead of time by them before we started ordering; just SUPER unprofessional and presumptuous. This is the equivalent of you opening up your wallet to pay someone, and that person goes and grabs an extra $20 out of your wallet and says thanks with a smile. I've heard about places that did this on YouTube, but didnt expect that kind of behavior at a place like this. All this to say, its the first and last time I will spend money there, simply because I dont want to reinforce that behavior.

Yelp
This is my second visit to this restaurant and the food is as good as the first time! I ordered the kale and ricotta dumplings, lamb stew and Soko - shitake and oyster mushroom dish. The dumplings were tasty and perfectly steamed. The kale and ricotta was a great mix and I used the chili sauce as a topping. The blend of flavors in the lamb stew was magnificent! The meat was tenderly cooked with a thick broth of tomatoes and potatoes that melt in your mouth. The mushrooms were an added bonus as they were equally flavorful and tender (not over cooked). The ambiance was very low key and relaxing. It's not a loud establishment like most restaurants but I had a glass of their a smooth and full bodied wine - 6 Blends. Totally worth the stop if driving through or hanging out in this neck of the woods! I highly recommend it if you're a local to Sonoma County or going on a date night!

Yelp
Enjoyed an amazing dinner with a good friend at this hidden gem in Sebastopol. Our server, Patrick, was incredibly attentive and has a very impressive knowledge of Georgian wines, which were outstanding! Wonderful menu options, we had the Kinkhali (Georgian Dumplings), which were absolutely delicious. The highlight of the meal was the Kharcho, a summer stew of beef, walnuts and Millet. Do not miss this tasty option, the spices and millet make for a wonderful combination. I would 100% recommend, and looking forward to going back again!

Yelp
Piala is Sebastopol's new restaurant offering Georgian cuisine. Georgia is a crossroads between Europe, Asia, Russia, the Middle East, Pakistan, and India. Consequently, Georgian cooking shows all those regional influences intersecting to offer original flavor combinations you won't find elsewhere. I visited Piala for dinner on its third official day since opening. Inside, the room has a cozy natural vibe and feels clean, unpretentious, and friendly. Every dish we tried at Piala was genuinely fantastic. Unusual delicious flavors and beautiful preparation. We started with house-marinated olives that were unusually large and delicious. Pkhali: spiced vegetable terrines, Soko: shitake and Oyster mushroom saute, Mtsvadi: grilled pork, and two Georgian wines. And tea cake for dessert. I look forward to Piala's soon-expanding menu that will offer traditional soup dumplings (Khinkali) and other daily specialties. It's also fun to sample the unusually excellent selection of Georgian wines rarely found in the USA. Congratulations to Jeff Berlin for having the vision to create this truly unique and excellent super-foodie experience in Sonoma County. Normally, I would expect to find a terrific regional-specialty restaurant like this only in a trendy part of New York, San Francisco, or London. Piala's $$ prices are very, very reasonable, especially for such fresh and unusual fare. Are there any negatives? Piala offers food for food lovers, adventurous diners, gourmets, wine lovers, and foodie people. I don't think most children would appreciate it, though the kid at the table next to me loved her Pkhlovani (cheese pie.) Piala seems like a place aimed at curious, open-minded, sophisticated adult diners. I will be back for the soup dumplings and more.

Yelp
I'm giving it 5 stars for excellent and unique food in spite of an experience at a dinner there that I have never ever experienced before. Even at previous dinners at this restaurant let alone at any other restaurant! We each ordered a glass of wine to go with our starters and decided to order a bottle off of the wine list to go with our main courses. When we were presented with the bill we were charged a 15.00 corkage fee. For one of their wines from their wine list! Who does that? We asked about it and were told that it was correct. Maybe this is a new trend but it was a first for me. Still, the food is delicious, unique, traditional, and is worth experiencing.

Yelp
Absolutely fantastic food and atmosphere! Truly authentic dishes and wines, thank you Jeff!

Yelp
We've eaten Georgian food before and really like it. Piala was just what we were hoping for....delicious Georgian food! We had the Soko which is chanterelles, black trumpets, shiitake and oyster mushrooms with fiddlehead ferns (a delightful and unique treat) sautéed with fresh herbs and a bit of red pepper flakes. A super flavorful dish! Also had the potato caramelized onion dumplings (very very tasty). A side of house made flat bread, which was warm and soft to accompany the mushroom dish. A light lunch but a very delicious one! Definitely recommend this gem!
