Piala is Sebastopol's new restaurant offering Georgian cuisine. Georgia is a crossroads between Europe, Asia, Russia, the Middle East, Pakistan, and India. Consequently, Georgian cooking shows all those regional influences intersecting to offer original flavor combinations you won't find elsewhere.
I visited Piala for dinner on its third official day since opening. Inside, the room has a cozy natural vibe and feels clean, unpretentious, and friendly.
Every dish we tried at Piala was genuinely fantastic. Unusual delicious flavors and beautiful preparation. We started with house-marinated olives that were unusually large and delicious. Pkhali: spiced vegetable terrines, Soko: shitake and Oyster mushroom saute, Mtsvadi: grilled pork, and two Georgian wines. And tea cake for dessert.
I look forward to Piala's soon-expanding menu that will offer traditional soup dumplings (Khinkali) and other daily specialties. It's also fun to sample the unusually excellent selection of Georgian wines rarely found in the USA.
Congratulations to Jeff Berlin for having the vision to create this truly unique and excellent super-foodie experience in Sonoma County. Normally, I would expect to find a terrific regional-specialty restaurant like this only in a trendy part of New York, San Francisco, or London.
Piala's $$ prices are very, very reasonable, especially for such fresh and unusual fare.
Are there any negatives? Piala offers food for food lovers, adventurous diners, gourmets, wine lovers, and foodie people. I don't think most children would appreciate it, though the kid at the table next to me loved her Pkhlovani (cheese pie.) Piala seems like a place aimed at curious, open-minded, sophisticated adult diners. I will be back for the soup dumplings and more.
