San Diego Has the Biggest Little Italy in the World

"As an easy, pedestrian-friendly starting point, this piazza is one of Little Italy’s public squares that celebrate Italian heritage and culture; I’ll grab a gelato or cappuccino here and settle in to enjoy the sunshine." - Cu Fleshman Cu Fleshman Cu is a freelance writer and editor with more than five years of experience. Very nice of the city to pay tribute to a U.S. Marine Corps Medal of Honor recipient. Very nively done.

Amazing place to enjoy a good Italian pizza o just a drink, perfect to visit with family. Its fountain is beautiful, is a modern place but also recreates the architecture of Italy. Full of Italian restaurants around where you can enjoy the taste of the Italian cuisine.Definitely a recommended visit if you like the Italian culture and cuisine.

It is actually a home decor shop now. They sell awesome home decor items and patio decorations as well. Very original products that will accentuate the home. It's a place to get a thoughtful birthday present if the person is into scented candles and off the wall decor stuff.

A great spot to sit and watch the sunset!

Make a stop here to see sunset. You will get an excellent view of the sky literally on fire. Sunset during the winter is around 5PM. If you are in the Little Italy area - must go.

A great Tribute to all Italian/American Servicemen, with a memorial bust of Gunnery Sergeant John Basilone, who was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor and the Navy Cross for his exemplary service.

Yelp
The Basilone monument should be better maintained than what it is. My buddies and I took this opportunity to take a towel and water and cleaned it as best as we could.

Yelp
Piazza Basilone is a great landmark to meet up with friends for a wonderful night in Little Italy. Located off India and cross Fir St lays Piazza Basilone where it has plenty of seating to sit on the steps or by the water globe. Take some time to read all about the great leader of the United States Marine Corps John Basilone in which the Piazza is named after. There are many days of the year where they do seasonal decorations such as on Veterans day they put many beautiful American flags around the Piazza and also during Christmas where they put up a Tree around it and have a tree lighting ceremony where it stays up throughout the Holidays. I usually like to come here with friends and sit around the Piazza and enjoy a Pizza from one of the nearby spots and just chat and relax and have a good time enjoying the breeze from the bay and enjoying the stunning views! This is the spot for meetups in the great town of Little Italy so on your next visit make sure you tell your friends the time and meet up location at the Piazza Basilone!

Yelp
The Piazza has events on Wednesdays, so I left work early and was fortunate to catch this lovely children's choir just before Christmas. What a treat! A great start to an evening in Little Italy.

Yelp
Doesn't look like much at first if you're passing by and it's totally possible to completely miss this beautiful, serene memorial to Gunnery Seargeant Basilone. Basilone was one of the first enlisted Marines to be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor of World War II, the highest military honor. He was born to Italian immigrants and grew up in New Jersey, enlisting in the army and after enlisting in the army, then subsequently enlisting in the Marines. He died on D-Day in Iwo Jima in 1945. This memorial commemorates him and all other Italian Americans in the military who sacrificed their lives throughout the years. It is a relaxing place to sit and is right outside Civico 1845. It has a water fountain with a mosaic globe, surrounded by rocks and moss, and around the perimeter has names in stone of veterans who have passed away, dedicated by their families. I would recommend coming here to soak in the sun and the scenery, and learning about the sacrifice of this brave man.

Yelp
This is the perfect spot to meet up with friends and family before a day or night out in Little Italy. It not only almost at the center of Little Italy, but the view looking straight west, offers a spectacular view of the San Diego Harbor and the many sail boats parading around. There are some nice tables and chairs scattered around to enjoy your morning coffee and or catch upon some reading. The fountain in the middle is a nice touch and the Manila John USMC bust and plaque offer a little bit of history. It's a great stop for a photo opportunity or a rest.

Yelp
This small plaza in Little Italy may not mean much to people walking by. If they were to stop and read the inscription of the honoree below his bust they might understand. John Basilone is one of the true heroes in the long distinguished history of the USMC. Google him sometime and read about his service and his sacrifice to become one of the most decorated service members in our countrys' history. This piazza is near many very good restaurants and is a pleasant place to stop and relax sitting in one of the chairs or benches provided. Manila John is remembered from San Diego to New Jersey where his hometown still celebrates a parade in his honor. A true hero!

Yelp
Cute little piazza on the main strip of Little Italy. The do the cutest events here for the holidays, most recently the glass Christmas tree. It was beautiful and definitely added a personal touch to the neighborhood. I love walking through this area and seeing the new festive touches they add.

Yelp
The most charming piazza to sit and enjoy the Pacific view and the life passing by! I just noticed last night the name of this piazza and was curious to know more about who was Basilone. It is nice to see some people who made a difference honored. The cute red metal chairs have plates with an illustration of Basilone and you are able to use the QR app on your phone to learn more about the history in situ. The fountain with mosaics is nicely designed and creates instant good mood, together with all those cute shops from Fir street. This is a nice square to sit, read, have a mini picnic in one of the tables, chat with friends or simply do nothing. Perfect to get some sun rays on a Saturday morning after your shopping in the farmers market. It is a very cozy area in lovely Little Italy.

Yelp
As a Marine myself I grew up in the Corps with Basilone as my hero. Long live Manilla-John, God bless this true American hero. I am so proud that we have a monument to him in my neighborhood of little Italy. I love this piazza, from the fountain, the tables and chairs and Romanesque sitting steps the whole thing ROCKS. Go here and pay homage to a great American, god bless him and all the men who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Yelp
Best place to chill out alone with date or with family. Sometimes when the lines are too long at filipis I order a pizza to go. Only takes 10 minutes and walk it over to the piazza

Rose Marie R.

Yelp
An absolutely perfect place to sit and watch the world go by. Views to the bay and located on the street where you'll find many fantastic restaurants from family style pizza to upscale dining. REAL Italians frequent the place and just listening to them speak Italian can transport you to your favorite Piazza in Italy. Let's not forget the catalyst for the Piazza...to honor the "boys" of Little Italy who fought and died in WWII. Choosing an American hero, John Basilone, as the namesake just makes the memorial more special and touching. Special kudos to one of the "boys" in the neighborhood, Gaetano (Tommy) Avila, who spear headed the project and got the city to agree to build the memorial. GO...you won't be disappointed!
