Doesn't look like much at first if you're passing by and it's totally possible to completely miss this beautiful, serene memorial to Gunnery Seargeant Basilone. Basilone was one of the first enlisted Marines to be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor of World War II, the highest military honor. He was born to Italian immigrants and grew up in New Jersey, enlisting in the army and after enlisting in the army, then subsequently enlisting in the Marines. He died on D-Day in Iwo Jima in 1945. This memorial commemorates him and all other Italian Americans in the military who sacrificed their lives throughout the years.
It is a relaxing place to sit and is right outside Civico 1845. It has a water fountain with a mosaic globe, surrounded by rocks and moss, and around the perimeter has names in stone of veterans who have passed away, dedicated by their families.
I would recommend coming here to soak in the sun and the scenery, and learning about the sacrifice of this brave man.
