The Best Bagels in NYC, According to a New Yorker

"A Manhattan bagel shop known for fresh, soft, chewy bagels with well-balanced, discernible seasonings — so an everything bagel actually tastes of every component it should. A local institution open for more than two decades, it also offers nationwide shipping through Goldbelly, though the bagels are best eaten freshly baked in-store." - Merlyn Miller

Okay the only huge disappointing thing about this place is there is none in Ireland 😤 we absolutely LOVED THIS PLACE. Two weeks in NY we must have came here easily like 9 times 🤣 every morning we’d get a lovely bagel and go to Central Park and start our day. Freshly pressed orange juice was so good. The coffees here too are really good and for the price it’s incredible. Cheapest coffee around I thought. Anything bagel 🥯 you can get soooo many things it was unreal. Sausage, egg, bacon, salmon, pancakes, muffins, protein shakes …. Ahhhh I’m driving myself crazy here 🤤. Place is so good. The first morning was out the door - we were gonna skip past it, but so glad we didn’t. It’s a high fast paced environment, I can imagine the staff pressure behind the counter but it’s like a well oiled machine. Highly recommend. Loved it. 👌✨✨✨ ps’ still reminiscing on my last order 🥹 when I go back to NYC I’ll be heading here first thing.

Out of all the bagel spots in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood we believe Pick A Bagel reigns supreme. Always packed in the morning for good reason, they just have good bagels, light but filling and always incredibly generous on the cream cheese. The inside is clean but sometimes it can get messy due to the constant flow of people coming in. Seating here is always an issue as it’s very busy and tourists tend to take up large swaths of the place but again, it’s worth it. They have an extensive menu and pastries as well as drinks. The line moves quickly, usually doing a lap around the store. You can place orders for pickup if you don’t want to wait, which we’ve done before and will admit is much more time efficient. Our go to orders from here are a plain bagel with plain cream cheese and an everything bagel with egg salad. The plain bagel is thick but light, piling with cream cheese and leaving you with a monster of a bagel in the process. The everything bagel there is phenomenal, all the right seasoning and all the right crunch from everything on top. The egg salad is also great, filling and savory and they also pile it on with that too. Whenever we eat here we go “that’s a NY bagel” and for good reason. While on the pricier side for bagels, we think you get what you pay for and to us you’re paying for the best bagel around, which will always be worth it (at least to us).

Google
Excellent spot for a proper New York bagel. Great selection of bagel varieties, and great selection of cream cheese, too. It's always important to me that a bagel spot has an egg bagel, and PAB does, of course. Their fresh-squeezed orange juice always hits the spot too. And, service is always very friendly! Thank you!

Google
Elisa is amazing and has such great customer service! Her kindness is why I love this place. Got about 7 sandwiches total during my stay nearby and they were all delicious. Fresh bagels made there is exactly what I was looking for. I will come back every time I visit! Also the fresh orange juice tastes just like the kind I squeeze at home. Delicious!

Google
Gosh, the Nova special was absolutely fantastic: delicious salmon, warm huge bagel, best cream cheese… it was absolutely satisfying to finish the whole thing! But placing my order, paying for it, finding my server back, waiting… was pretty chaotic. They have a system that is not very intuitive and English was not well understood. I almost walked out without one of my orders, glad I checked my bag first. Now that I have been there once, I feel that I will be more prepared for next time. I will definitely try to stop by next time we are in NY.

Google
Outstanding fresh bagels and the hustle and bustle of your typical NY bagel spot. Had the lox special on everything and a blueberry with butter on the side. Got some "travelling bagels" to go. Highly recommend.

Google
Ordered 3 simple items off the menu on UberEats and all 3 were wrong. A chicken salad sandwich on Sourdough (was delivered on a Sesame bagel), ordered an egg salad sandwich (a tuna salad sandwich was delivered) and 2 eggs and 2 pancakes (this was the worst - they delivered a crush up half eaten muffin with bits of bacon under it - we threw the whole thing away because that’s just disgusting). Really disappointed at how the staff just don’t seem to give a damn.

Google
Had a doctor's appointment in the area this morning and a lot of places weren't open except for this place. Its pretty much a tourist trap spot Since it's surrounded by hotels. So I ordered a hot pastrami on a cinnamon raisin bagel. It wasn't bad but it wasn't worth $15 it was definitely a messy sandwich the meat slipped out multiple times and hey don't give you napkins in the bag(Found out later it was behind me but was blocked by people). As far as flavor wise except for the mustard it was bland

Yelp
I was unsure what I wanted when I entered but as I came in, I was asked what I wanted, I asked for a moment to think, but was quickly asked again, so I just went with a toasted everything bagel with cream cheese. As I went to go pay, I was told the apply pay wasn't working. I didn't want to unlock my card, and asked the employee to try the other register, which another employee assisted him in getting working. I was rather perturbed when I saw the cost $5.44. I was initially going to get the scallion cream cheese, which probably would have been $10. However, I didn't not, because I felt rushed. Once I try the bagel, I realized, it was mediocre, and surely not worth the cost. This was my first and last time with this place.

Yelp
Everyone told me when in New York, eat a bagel. They are the bedt bahwls ever However they couldn't verbalize what made New York bagels so much better than other bagels. I will say New York bagels are indeed better. The glutenous and chewy texture is superiour. It is thicker, and more substantial. They stuff it with a good amount of ingredients. I got the breakfast special one. Smoked salmon, red onions, cream cheese, capers, bagel, coffee. The coffee was just okay. The bagel was too big. I couldn't finish it.

Yelp
All I wanted was a BEC on a bagel. When I come to NYC it's a must. This place was a great find. Delicious bagels and coffee. While there I got an iced caramel latte, BEC on egg bagel, BEC on plain bagel, plain bagel with plain cream cheese and Two of everything. Loved it! Would recommend.

Yelp
A regular pre-work bagel sandwich spot. They're quick, no frills, and make tasty sandwiches.

Yelp
My 1st New York City bagel ordering experience!!! Wow! It was amazing! I only wish they did have an Asiago cheese bagel! The line goes super fast and they don't wait for you to decide what you want, so for sure if 1st time ordering look at menu online 1st.! It's super fast paced and a little intimidating but everyone was super nice!! Remember your order because they do not take names or give numbers! They just call out an order and you need to take yours! I ordered the bacon egg and cheese on an onion bagel! The bagel was aamazing everything was so good!!! 10/10. Very small inside but for a Saturday morning we actually snagged a table!

Yelp
This WAS a favorite bagel shop until yesterday. I got a Great coffee with Great bagel but not my "butter with bagel" this morning. Amount of butter was a thinnest layer people could put. Two stars this morning, one for the coffee and one for the bagel it self. Zero for the butter spread and I will not go back all because what they did. I put photo of my thinnest buttered bagel.

Yelp
Depending on the time you get there- there could be a line. I was there around 10 AM and it was BUSY! Get in line and know what you want! Lots of bagel options and cream cheese varieties as well. They even have breakfast sandwiches, wraps and more. Plenty of coffee, coffee alternatives and drinks! The service is quick and the food is delicious! Lots of tables and bar stool options! Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
Conveniently located just north of Times Square area on 8th Ave., Pick a bagel offers quick service and indoor and outdoor seating area. Healthy options, such as fruit available as well as pastry goodies available. Dedicated personnel to constantly keeping the place picked up and wiped down offers a clean shop. Fairly well organized, and quick service. However, everyone in our party had a slight mistake in their order. Didn't affect the quality but clearly shows there's some opportunity in their ordering to prep process! Nice selection of smears. Bagels were very good and we've tried a handful of shops throughout the city this week. This falls into number four out of six.

Yelp
There was a huge line out the door when I arrived, which I was not expecting, but it moved quickly. I got an everything bagel with scallion cream cheese and it definitely satisfied my craving. I would come back to try some of the entrees I saw were being offered. Overall, this is a great spot to grab a bagel before walking around the Theater District.
google avatar

Yelp
I got the egg bagel with strawberry cream cheese. Chose this location because it was close to Gershwin theatre but I regret it because their bagels did not represent NY bagels correctly. The strawberry cream cheese was yummy but the egg bagel was not airy at all. It was tough to chew. The service was quick for the line though, which I appreciate.

Yelp
Loved my bagel! I'm glad they have vegan options & ah it was so flavorful. Added tofu scallion to the veggie flat bagel
google avatar

Yelp
This place is only convenient if you're in the Times Square area, but otherwise I'd recommend to venture to other bagel shops. The cream cheese here is pretty good, but otherwise the texture and the taste of the bagel is average quality. It's more bready tasting compared to other bagel places. I got the onion bagel with scallion cream cheese. It tasted decent at first until I found a piece of hair in my food halfway through. The prices here are also higher than other bagel shops around NYC. I would not recommend this place.

Yelp
"Tasty bagels near south end of Central Park" I'm no bagel connoisseur, and I'm not from NYC, so take what I say with that in mind. I came to NYC and challenged my local friend "take me somewhere for breakfast with good bagels, since I want to see why people rave about NYC bagels so much". She recommended this place as very good-- not the very best but solid, and we met here for breakfast at 7am on a Tuesday morning. There was lots of available seating, though people were coming and going the whole time we were there. I decided to go with something simple, since that'd be the safest comparison to bagels in other states: sesame bagel with veggie cream cheese. My friend got something with a seafood salad in it that looked really good. OK, New Yorkers, I believe you now. This was likely the best bagel I've had... perfectly soft (not "tough"), moist, and immensely flavorful. I don't think I'd be dreaming about it or anything, but I can see the appeal. The veggie cream cheese was also delightful-- they put a LOT, so grab a plastic knife to take a little off as you eat or else it'll be all over your face and hands. Service was great albeit a little non-intuitive exactly where to do what at the counter (though the signs helped). Bagel was perfectly toasted and came out quickly. And the restaurant was clean. I have only one trivial gripe about the setting-- there were ceiling fans with lights above them, and they made it so many of the tables were visibly "blinking" because of the fans spinning. I'm not epileptic or anything, but it was pretty distracting when I first got there. I doubt this would be an issue midday though. Overall, I'd VERY happily come back.

Yelp
Pick A Bagel is located along 8th avenue with tons of foot traffic. From morning to early evening this place always has people in it. The restaurant is long, with two different entrances/exits on either end. In between is a long counter where you can order your food (which includes a huge variety of cream cheeses) and seating. Service is always quick and efficient though depending on what time of day you show up the staff can (understandably) be rather exhausted and run down but this is hard work so I get it. My main experiences at Pick A Bagel are getting bagels on the go. My favorites are their Cinnamon Raisin and Egg Bagels. Usually I just get regular cream cheese though they also have a tofu cream cheese I rather like. They always toast the bagels very well and give plenty of cream cheese. I've had a bit less luck taking bagels to go. They are good for a couple days at home but three or four days later they become rock hard so be warned. Pick A Bagel is a great place to grab a quick bite on the go. I recommend it!

Yelp
Maybe my taste buds are not sophisticated enough but I thought that this was a very regular bagel place in NYC. To be honest, the only bagel place that has really stood out to me was Absolute Bagels on UWS because of the amount of cream cheese they put into each one, but anyways. - Breakfast Burrito - Standard breakfast burrito. Wish they had put some ketchup or sauce in here so that it wouldn't be so dry. - Onion Toasted with Sundried Tomato Cream Cheese, Egg, and Bacon - This was like a breakfast burrito but in a bagel minus a few ingredients, although I like this one more because it was more "wet". I would honestly just get this version instead as it was cheaper by a few miles. I wish the cream cheese had more sundried tomato flavor. Overall, not a bad bagel place although also not particularly memorable. I will say that despite there looking like there's no seats in the restaurant, there was actually plenty as people got up and left pretty quickly.

Yelp
Slapped. Chaotic experience but that's to be expected and is part of the experience. I thought this breakfast sandwich was wonderful
google avatar

Jessica H.

Yelp
I'm confused about the bad reviews because I thought this place was great! I got an onion bagel with tofu vegetable cream cheese and my partner got an onion bagel with jalapeño caper cream cheese. We both thought our bagels were incredible. Thick and creamy smear! Would definitely recommend. I will mourn these bagels as an LA resident :(
google avatar

Yelp
Pick A Bagel is in a word, AWESOME. If you are VEGAN and are near the Ed Sullivan Theatre in New York City, well there is only one Bagel spot to visit. The variety of VEGAN cream cheese options is the most I have EVER seen in any establishment I have ever visited. FULL DISCLOSURE, it is a hole in a hole-in-a-wall kind of place but the atmosphere, staff, and prices are a WIN-WIN proposition people. I had the everything bagel with the VEGAN TOFU SCALLION cream cheese. Be advised they make the bagels here as sandwiches so there is an INSANE amount of cream cheese on the Bagels. I just took some off to enjoy the bagel as much as I did the cream cheese...LOL!!! If I am ever near the theatre district again I will stop by. Eat, Drink, and Be Merry, my Friends.
google avatar

Shakira E.

Yelp
This is a quick spot to grab a bagel, sandwich or salad and drink. Perfect for breakfast or lunch. We were attending a taping for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and Pick A Bagel was around the corner from the Ed Sullivan Theater and they offered vegan cream cheese so it was a win win for us. The staff is quick and efficient and they get your order out quickly. The atmosphere is bustling but welcoming. There is a public restroom available so that's a bonus. Definitely would stop here again when in the area.
google avatar

Yelp
Friendly staff, lots of options & easy to order. It's super quick, pick what you want & they make it in a few minutes. I went on a busy Sunday morning & I was in & out within 10 minutes. I'll def be back!

Yelp
Bombbbb / delicious lox bagel special Kinda pricey but worth it $21 Stuffed with cream cheese, tomato, capers, onion Service was quick & efficient during early morning rush Corner location across from walgreens; spots to sit/stand, Will be back!
google avatar

Yelp
Solid scallion spread on cinnamon raisin bagel and lox spread on everything bagel. Just s bit overpriced.

Yelp
We visited last year from California and came back again this year! The BEST bagels & hot chocolate we've ever had. It's a must visit on every trip to NY!!
google avatar

Sheryl W.

Yelp
I've been coming to Pick A Bagel for the past year on business trips. The food is always freshly and deliciously prepared by friendly, fast employees. The location is always busy but they get you out quickly. Today, I sat at a table for a change and enjoyed watching the hustle and bustle of city life. I cannot recommend them enough especially if you stay midtown Hilton or Sheraton.
google avatar

Rebecca C.

Yelp
Our kids really enjoyed the chocolate chip and blueberry muffins. We also had a garlic bagel with cream cheese that was good.
google avatar

Taylor A.

Yelp
Decent bagels if you need something quick. Not a big fan of the coffee though; a little too bitter for my liking. Service is very quick though.
google avatar

Katrina M.

Yelp
Busy but efficient bagel joint in NYC. We stopped by out of convenience as the location was walking distance from our hotel, & I was really happy to see: 1) the variety in the cream cheese and spreads, and 2) that they had flagels! Flat bagels. My friend's bagel came out right as she paid for her order, but I had to wait a few minutes for mine to be finished. I like the texture of a thin toasted bagel much more than a traditional bagel, so I ordered an everything flagel with baked salmon spread. The spread was mildly sweet, but it paired well with the saltiness of the everything bagel seasoning. It costs a little extra to get veggies (lettuce/tomato) on the bagel, but I opted against them as I wanted to focus on the bagel and spread - the latter of which, the shop is VERY generous with. I also ordered a poppy seed bagel with walnut cream cheese to try, and the cream cheese wasn't sweet at all. The bagel itself was nearly black with how much poppy seeds were in it. This is a good thing, but so many seeds got stuck in my teeth, so avoid this one if you're a tourist to the city and planning to smile in pictures afterwards!
google avatar

Hailey K.

Yelp
Disappointing. The service was quick, but the bagel quality was so bad lol. Everything Bagel with Lox Cream Cheese (4/10): Such a let down. The bagel was incredibly dry. The seasoning on it, which is usually super flavorful, was weirdly bland. And to top it off there was too much cream cheese, which made the texture super unbalanced.
google avatar

Alexa K.

Yelp
Fun, fast spot to get a bagel. It's in a really busy area, so it is always packed, but the line moves fast and you should find a seat. The bagel was really tasty, and staff was friendly!
google avatar

Ray N.

Yelp
This was an enthusiastic recommendation from a hotel employee. He was not wrong. Authentic NY bagels was our request and he did not hesitate. It didn't sound like that was the first time he had heard that request. When you get there, Don't let the line discourage it just means it is THAT good! They handle orders with precision and keep the line moving. I ordered the #3 breakfast special in an everything bagel. The eggs and bacon were delicious. The coffee was delicious.
google avatar

Melissa M.

Yelp
Bagels are so fresh and heaping with schmear - split one with your partner because you won't be able to finish one by yourself!

Bill B.

Yelp
Delicious breakfast bagel w/coffee, great atmosphere ans with New York City street view.

Courtney L.

Yelp
The best bagel sandwich i've had in New York so far! It is very fresh, you can watch them cook the food on the grill. Hot chocolate was very yummy too!
google avatar

Rachael R.

Yelp
Stopped here for breakfast during a recent NYC trip. They were busy, and the way that you order is kind of weird. you order your food on one end but then walk down to pay and have to tell them what you ordered (basically order twice). They could totally streamline this process to be way better. All of our bagels were very good!
google avatar

Annabelle L.

Yelp
Decent bagel. It was large and the cream cheese was smooth. As for the bagel itself, it has a nice chewy exterior and a plushy interior. However, I found the dough to be lacking in flavor. I enjoy a really chewy and relatively dense bagel, but if you prefer a more neutral-tasting, fluffy bagel, I think you will like this place. Customer service was friendly and patient, which is uncommon on a busy day in NYC. Although it's not my favorite bagel in the city, it's worth a try!
google avatar

Wesley Y.

Yelp
Was craving a lox bagel during my visit to NY and stumbled upon this shop during a morning run! The shop was crowded as it led outside, but overall super efficient as the line moved super quickly with their assembly line system. I ordered the Nova Scotia Smoked Salmon and it did not disappoint. Got tons of salmon, had avocado, and the cream cheese was yummy. Portions were great my cravings were definitely satisfied. On top of that, the workers were helpful with my questions about the menu and overall the energy inside was a vibe. I would come here again!
google avatar

Laurel S.

Yelp
Seriously sub par bagels which is disappointing in NYC. Had the cali sandwich and the filling was fine but the bagel was dry and did not have the signature chew factor that you expect from a legit nyc bagel.
google avatar

Jose C.

Yelp
Came in expecting to wait a long time, but it was honestly not to bad. The line was long and to the entrance of the door. But it moved very quickly. They also have a lot of tables, so if you're lucky enough, you just me able to enjoy your bagels sitting down. The crew was very friendly. They don't play around here. I got my order working 3 minutes after I payed. My wife ordered her usual, plain bagel with strawberry cream cheese, and I ordered a BEC on everything she and a a Nova Scotia with scallion cream cheese, tomatoes and capers on an Everything bagel as well. Both my sandwiches were phenomenal and very filling. The bagels tasted fresh and were medium sized. They give you plenty of my bacon and cheese on the BEC and tasted so delicious. The Nova Scotia was salty just how I like, but couldn't have used a bit more cream cheese. But overall a very satisfying meal that didn't break the bank. Can definitely see myself returning.
google avatar

Lisa P.

Yelp
Heard a rumor about NY bagels being so good. Of course it had to be tested. This place was crowded, high energy and good vibes. My advice; if you are not alone and you spy a seat, grab it. Service was fast paced and friendly. Now about the bagels; best I ever had which I could only eat half. Chewy, moist, fresh and flavorful and packed with almost two inches of cream cheese. Back home that amount if cream cheese is considered extra and you will surely pay for it. Thank you Pick a Bagel for confirming the rumor! I'll have another.
google avatar

Julia P.

Yelp
We were really pleasantly surprised by how much we enjoyed our bagel sandwiches here! The bagels themselves were so good! We did have a line on a Sunday morning but it really wasn't bad- I never saw it get out there for at that time, and it moved very quickly. Seating can be a challenge especially for a group that has more than 2 in it, but you can double up with other small groups of patrons as able. There odd also a single bathroom available. I look forward to coming here again on our next visit!
google avatar

Shannon K.

Yelp
Decent bagels, but didn't appreciate the attitude. This was the first place we stopped by for a new york bagel. I knew what I wanted, and even though I was quick and polite they were aggressive and had an attitude for some reason. They have two different windows, both with registers that aren't labelled. Their system to order at one of the unmarked registers and then tell someone at the other unmarked register on the other side what you ordered. Having a system is fine, but the woman who we initially talked to mumbled what to do under her mask, then got an attitude when I asked her to please repeat. The bagels were mid with a side of attitude, don't recommend
google avatar

sarah y.

Yelp
The amount of cream cheese they put is insane. Overall a pretty decent/average NYC bagel. I wish they toasted the bagel more. Service was fast and they have good seating inside
google avatar

Flora H.

Yelp
I've been told by many New Yorkers that Pick A Bagel is their favorite, and I find it to be a solid choice, but not at the top of my list (don't get me wrong, still very good, but there are high standards here). I had an egg, cheese and bacon on sesame and just found the bagel itself to be a bit less fluffy and chewy than other bagel shops in NYC, but still satisfying.
google avatar

Padric G.

Yelp
Love this place for a quick and reliable weekend breakfast. Egg sandwich with cream cheese AND cheddar is
google avatar

Kathy G.

Yelp
It's a bit confusing when you arrive because there are a bunch of folks helping and then upon taking your order they send you to pay, but somehow it all works out EXCEPT I didnt get to explain my order in detail. Bagel was fantastic. I had an everything bagel and lox.
google avatar

Kathy M.

Yelp
I was really hoping to love this place, but it was only ok. I got the seasame bagel with lox cream cheese. I love that crunchy seasame flavor on a toasted bagel, but it was lacking. Then, the cream cheese had a decent lox flavor, but it wasnt as creamy and decadent as I had hoped for. Additionally, the bagel menu was behind the cashier and the end of the line was way at the end of the counter, so I didn't know what the bagel flavors were. It wasn't a great experience.

Ref R.

Yelp
Absolutely love their bagels Way too much cream cheese, but fine - hard to please everyone But please- TOASTED- means toasted not 2 second warm up! For $5.50...I should get it a bit toasted at least!
