These Chefs Are Leading LA’s Booming Instagram Pop-Up Food Scene | Eater LA

"After Picnic—the Sunset Boulevard restaurant—closed, Shanna Lynn Milazzo converted her Echo Park kitchen into a weekly pop-up called Picnic Sandwich, selling a rotating variety of meals and sandwiches (from red-sauce Italian to fried chicken) mostly on Saturday and Sunday early evenings via DM, with a portion of proceeds going to the nonprofit Black Trans Femmes in the Arts." - Farley Elliott

I can't believe that I didn't visit sooner! I visited this restaurant as part of a Where's Waldo search for local businesses, and I was hungry and nearby. There is adequate parking and some outdoor seating that was tidy. The freshly baked breads are displayed in the storefront. The display counters are neat and uncluttered. The interior has adequate seating and is simply decorated with local photos and flyers. There are local items available for sale. I had glanced at the menu ahead of time since I needed a dairy-free meal. One of the employees cordially assisted me with my order; he patiently addressed my plethora of questions and concerns. Sadly, he informed me that all of the breads contain dairy; however, he offered to prepare the sandwich using lettuce as an alternate wrap. He also verified which chips were dairy-free and omitted the troublesome cookie. My dairy-free lunch consisted of the Pork Tenderloin on whole lettuce leaves with pickled red onions and ample ancho mayo. I had a bag of Original Sun Chips as the side, and a bottle of water as the beverage. I dipped my chips in the remaining ancho mayo. My meal was a little messy but quite tasty. I plan to visit again!

Been going here for years, always good food. However today was quite different. Quiche was 2" tasteless custard with some ham, spinach & cheese. Wasn't asked if I wanted it heated. Got in car to eat, had to go back inside to get heated. Chicken salad, usually husband's fav, was tasteless as well. No sundried tomatoes, no seasoning.

this place is very very weird. I say this because of the following reasons: 1. i walk in the store, see all these old people (grandma grandpa) and they were staring at me as if I don't belong here. 2. The ambience is a cafeteria for older people. and there is nothing wrong with it but the vibe was just so sad. Even the workers seemed like they don't want to be there, working like robots. No greetings or anything... very strange. 3. the sandwich is basic af. i ordered shrimp salad sandwich and it came with shrimp celeries and lettuce. and it gets more weird because they gave me pickles wrapped in this plastic bag and one mint candy.. and they gave me one single napkin which wasn't enough because when I opened the sandwich all the ingredients fell out. 4. As I was leaving, walking towards my car, this old man honks at me signaling me to leave asap so he can park his car there. im so shocked at this behavior like who does that? overall i was expecting some cute aesthetic sandwich shop but left unwelcomed, never want to go back here again. maybe they should change their sign to old people only or something.

Nice Cafe! Bread was FRESH. I liked the shrimp salad sandwich. Also bought a pimento cheese but I didn't really care for it.

Google
Love the chicken salad and lemon New Yorker cookies… tried the banana chocolate scone today which was nasty. It was too sweet and tasted like a banana laffy taffy instead of a subtle banana bread-like treat.

Google
Excellent sandwiches with delicious cookies as well :) Turkey + avo is my fav.

Google
Got the chicken salad sandwich as a box lunch and all food was delicious. So glad to have a local place with great food so close to me!

Super cute place. Food was exactly as expected. We sat outside and had a very enjoyable lunch

Yelp
Cute to go sandwich shop as I'd like to call it! Our office catered from Picnic a few times before and every time it was delicious. I really appreciate the fact that they have multiple veggie sandwich options. I ordered the char grilled veggie sandwich and I had low expectations but the sandwich was good! I enjoy the box lunches since they come with chips, a cookie, pickle. I don't think I'd do back to sit inside and eat lunch but a good pick up box lunches for sure. The staff is very frequently!

Yelp
Quaint sandwich place with a nice selection. I had the pimento cheese sandwich and 2 sides of fruit instead of chips or cookie. Sandwich was refreshing and savory. Super nice and quiet to chat with friends over lunch.

Yelp
The food was absolutely fresh and delicious! Yvonne provided great service and attentive to my needs for catering my work function. Well packaged boxes. The only disappointment I had was the charge for names on the boxes for .75, that was done in a sharpie and small. I was expecting at least a label with a name on it. This was an added feature that wasn't worth the cost. Outside of that, food was great! I will be patronizing this place again.

Yelp
Great sandwiches / full meal with quick service and an array of options! You're lunch will be somewhere between $11-$17 average here depending on how you slice it. Great spot when in a crunch & looking for some quality quick!

Yelp
Our friend picked up 3 sandwiches here and brought them home for an informal lunch. Two turkey on baguette and one tuna on sourdough. Everyone says "fresh, wholesome, and tasty."

Yelp
Cute little sandwich shop. The service was great. Loved my turkey sandwich. The fresh bread was killer as well as its fresh ingredients. Best sandwich I've had in years. They make their breads and treats on site. Quality of the food was amazing! Prices are reasonable! I would highly recommend this place if your going on an outdoor picnic. I will return. Check it out!

Yelp
This is my favorite place to pick up food and have a picnic! They package the food well and you are set to have a great picnic outside. I also love the kids meals! It's nice to get a great tasting healthy meal that the kids love! My favorite is the Greek salad with lemon caper dressing. My husbands and kids favorite is the turkey and cheese sandwich! Don't forget to get the awesome cookies and a loaf of bread for dinner!

Yelp
I was craving a sandwich the other day, so I decided to give Picnic a try. Pick up was easy - they have a make shift drive through in the parking lot, so you don't even have to get out of the car. I ordered a Picnic Box Lunch with a Roast Beef Sandwich, Chips, Fruit Salad, pickle, and Chocolate Pecan Cookie. Overall, it was a fine meal, especially if you're literally taking it on a picnic, or ordering boxed lunches for some sort of luncheon or event. Other than that though, it was just a meriocre lunch. The sandwich was pretty basic, with a pile of roast beef in the center (that's a pet peeve of mine... Spread it out across the bread!). The bread was good though and tasted fresh. The cookie was the star though - it tasted homemade and freshly baked. Next time I'll get my sandwich elsewhere but swing by for a cookie!

Yelp
Nice casual neighborhood lunch place with great sandwiches, salads and soup. Has a family feel

Yelp
This is such a cute spot!! For online orders, they're placed right next to the entrance when they're ready! We ordered online and waited in line because we didn't know they were at the front since there's not much signage to indicate it. We took our boxes to the park and it was a perfect little picnic. I also love how much customization there is on online orders! It's also in a beautiful part of the city so the drive to pick up our food was so nice :)

Yelp
Sandwiches or salads...you can't go wrong at this delightful cozy breakfast and lunch spot that serves everything up with some yummy homemade bread!

Yelp
A simple sandwich shop for box lunches. Nothing fancy but I think the sandwiches are good and they have good portions. Staff is friendly and the establishment is clean with a very casual atmosphere. Box lunches include a sandwich, chips, fruit, pickle, and a cookie for $10. Easy and satisfying for lunch meetings at work. I

Yelp
The shrimp salad sandwich was pretty good. The shrimp was plump and the celery was crispy. The sauce is very fluid and not a creamy sauce. The hoagie bread is a bit dry, which is understandable because the salad is so wet. The fruit cup had a variety of fruit in it. The chocolate chip and pecan cookie was pretty good in general. I prefer a more chewy cookie but it was crispy with chunks of chocolate and pecans. I tried a bite of the chewy chocolate and preferred that because it was like a moist brownie in cookie form. I hadn't tried the Deep River chips before. They're greasy, thick and full of thick black pepper (salt and pepper flavor). Each bag donates to charity, which is nice. The chicken salad looked good, so I decided to try it. It had good-sized chunks of chicken in it and wasn't too dry. I tried the Turkey sandwich too. The bread was a little dry, and the turkey was a little salty. It looked good, although the avocado was spread instead of sliced like I expected. They have nice interior and patio seating.

Yelp
We moved from California and returned to Houston in December. An unanticipated benefit of the move: I am fewer than ten blocks from Picnic. We had continued ordering granola for delivery to California, now I call, drive down the street and pick up my order. If you have not tried Picnic granola, you do not know what you are missing. The soups, breads and sandwiches are great as well.

Jeff D.

Yelp
Some of the food is good. Some is not. We enjoy the sandwiches and salads. I didn't care for the lentil soup at all.

Yelp
My company orders box lunches from quite a few vendors around Houston. Typically for the sandwiches but most offer salad options as well. From the 6 vendors we've used for boxed lunches the salad is always a miserable afterthought. Today we had Picnic cater lunch and it was the first time we had salads from them and I was highly impressed. Dare I say that, for salads, this is one of the best places for a boxed lunch. I had the chef salad with spicy ranch. The first thing I noticed was how lush the greens were. Plentiful, healthy greens which look like they were picked and place by God himself. The meats were thick cut and juicy, the chicken was well seasoned and moist. The cheese was funky and pungent like the stuff on the block. That's unheard of! But the tomatoes really put me over the edge because they tasted like, get this, they tasted like tomatoes! I've gotten so used to the gas ripen, cardboard variety they sell at the grocery store I didn't remember how good a perfectly ripe tomato could be. I've also tried their sandwich box lunches and they too are definitely on the higher end of quality. Just a step below Central Market. My only complain is the hockey puck, I mean cookie. Its literally hard as rock! But all in all, for the salad option, the boxed lunch from Picnic is definitely in the top 3!

Yelp
Recently we got box lunches from Picnic several times over the course of three weeks. The box lunches were all ok, nothing spectacular. They definitely seem over priced for what you get. The bread was always a little dry. The chicken salad was very good, I'd get that again and again if I had to go back. The sun dried tomatoes in the chicken salad give it that little bit of extra punch. I had the ham and cheese on one of the days we ordered from Picnic and it was disappointing. The fruit salad side had way too much cheap melon in it. Melon is such a filled fruit. We liked that they delivered to Rice U, so that was a bonus. There was just nothing that made me want to go there again after trying them 3 times throughout our 3 weeks. They need to make the lunches cheaper or add something to them. 2 stars because I wouldn't choose to go there, even for a quick take out.

Yelp
Picnic does a handful of simple things, and it does them REALLY WELL! It is evident that attention to detail is a strong suit of this neighborhood gem. Basil mayo, fresh mint in the fruit salad, house-made bread, SUPER fresh salads? We have yet to order anything we didn't love.

Yelp
This is walking distance to our home, and is a pretty cute little location, but I was disappointed by our lunch. They have a good variety of options, good vegetarian options, too, but the descriptions make everything seem way better than they really are. In reality, the sandwhiches were very plain tasting, very little flavor, skimpy with the filling. My boyfriend got a shrimp salad sandwhich box and the sandwhich was basically all celery and mayo, no shrimp. The box is a cute idea, but for almost twelve dollars, it was way overpriced for what you get. I got tuna salad and it was decent, but again, not a lot of tuna, not a lot of flavor, not very filling. The idea is cute and I love the location but I don't think we'll be back. For two sandwhiches, two bags of chips, a cookie, two drinks, tiny fruitcup and pickle, it was almost thirty dollars, and everything was bland and unimpressive.

Yelp
Classic lunch spot with fresh baked breads, and amazing Salads! Its only $9.50 for a great box lunch, and the sandwich selection is great!

Yelp
No overt complaints about this place. Bright airy space complete with picnic tables and small tables and fold-y chairs. For about $10 you can get a sandwich, chips, small side of fruit, and a cookie of your choice making this place an attractive lunch catering option. However, nothing really stands out for an in-person visit. I had the chicken salad sandwich and thought it was decidedly average. Sandwiches are pretty vanilla; this isn't some deli where they make wacky combinations or try to put 2 lbs of meat on the sandwich. They have Zapp's chips too which is a plus for me (go Voodoo baby). The peanut butter cookie was on the dry side of the dry/gooey cookie matrix. For another couple of dollars, I got a Hibiscus mint tea that was quite refreshing. In addition to food, there are some food products for sale in the back as well as some pastries and cookies available at the front counter. Several families in the store when I went. Parking is ample in the private lot. For me, this will be a nice place to revisit for nearby catering needs or a light lunch, but not something on my short list or regular lunch rotation.

Yelp
Picnic boxed lunches are fantastic, but cost a little over $9. It comes with a sandwich, chips, cookie, pickle & fruit cup. You're guaranteed to have leftovers since the sandwiches are pretty big. I always get the turkey. The bread looks ordinary, but it's always fresh and delicious. Seating and parking can be annoying though. They have 2 picnic tables and some small tables. Parking is minimal.

Yelp
Last week, a friend was having one of the worst days of her life. I insisted that she needed something healthy to eat and we headed to Picnic. My friend broke down in tears while ordering--because she couldn't handle anything that day---and the amazing person taking our order comped our meal. Not only was it delicious, fresh food---but that kindness was exactly what both of us needed on such a dark day. I cannot say enough about the generosity and grace shown to us that day---my friend needed to see good in the world...and the Picnic staff provided exactly what she needed. I will always remember this day, thank you, Picnic!

Yelp
Nice spacious casual place, with wonderfully good soups and reasonably priced lunches. I like it a lot so far, though I haven't yet had the sandwiches. I subtracted a star because they could do better if they got bakery bread, as the roll that came with the soup was only so so.
google avatar

Nadia V.

Yelp
Friendly service and relaxed environment. Definitely get the boxed lunch as it is a good and filling meal for adults or kids. The box comes with sandwich, chips, fruit cup, pickle and a cookie! I hate pickles so can't attest to this part of the meal but hey to each his own! The chicken salad is my go to! They make cakes and homemade bread here too you can order. Good value and good place for a laid back lunch!

Yelp
Nothing fancy about this sandwhich shop, but I would pick this place over a chain any day. Lots of parking. Casual. Fresh bread in the window. Very cheap and simple sandwhiches. I got the turkey, which was just that, turkey, cheese, lettuce on wheat. For $6.00 good portion of meat. Not too bad. I would come back and get a quick something togo again. I also grabbed some of their granola, which was a plus. They also have salads kinda like local foods or a while foods. And they sell local honey, I love that.

Yelp
Picnic is awesome! They have the tastiest menu and they give back to their community as well! I'm a volunteer at KPFT 90.1FM and they donated lunch! Wow! Thank you!!

Yelp
If you have not had the privilege of listening to Patton Oswalt's stand-up then you might not be familiar with precisely why I WANT ALL THE HAM is uncontrollably hilarious and I couldn't stop laughing even as I was writing this sentence so it would have been way worse to laugh through this sentence if I was actually talking out loud. His stand-up is on Spotify and elsewhere so go hunt it down. Well as far as sandwich meats go, I want ALL THE HAM from Picnic. $6.25 for the sandwich only or pick up a pickle, fruit, chips, and cookie for $9.50. If you go Full Lunchbox (no, not one of Jay's flirty pet nicknames for Silent Bob) then that is quite a lot of food clocking in at under $10. This is not a weak sandwich, this sandwich lifts bro. It will take off its' tank-top and show you right meow. The ham sandwich comes loaded down with ham slices, a large slice of swiss cheese (way more than Wendy/fast food ideas on what a slice of cheese looks like,) basil mayo, and dijon mustard on sourdough. The ham is juicy and tasty, this does not taste like it came out of a $2.99 package at the supermarket. There is a lot of ham, so much ham. The basil mayo really stands out as being fantastic - and I don't even like regular mayo as much as Shania Twain - but this mayo is so good if you filled up a bathtub with it I would get in and splash around in it for a bit. Considering how pleasing the mayo is, the dijon mustard was like the unfortunate-looking friend you bring to bars simply to make you look better in comparison when s/he stands next to you. I could have lived without the mustard and taken 2x mayo. The only mildly disappointing touch to the sandwich was the pathetic looking tiny piece of lettuce. It seemed so half-hearted like yeah, here's a tiny splash of green just cos. The sourdough bread more than made up for it. It was sweet mana baked into the fluffy but edible pillows of the gods high up in the bakery of Mount Olympus. But my biggest gripe here (and it's a big ol' lady of a complaint) is with the fruit cup because the fruit they picked could kill me, and I feel like that was intentional to pick evil fruit like that to go into a fruit cup. But the pickle was segregated far away from the fruit cup in its own little pickle sleeve, so the pickle made up for the fruit blasphemy in the cup of doom. The chips were just the standard Lays Plain Jane flavor. Which I suppose will do the trick if you are starving in the middle of a desert. But having just found out about the Sriracha flavored limited edition Lays chips at Randalls Midtown I was mid wet dream thinking about them, and so the Plain Jane flavor really did not blow up my skirt that much. Picnic is a decent lunch option. It's not break the bank expensive for a lunch, and at least you get your money's worth of ham. Both me and the subject of Patton's joke are quite enjoying ALL of the ham available as often as possible.

Yelp
I am not a sandwich person. That being said, this place was fine for a quick lunch, but not anywhere I'd choose to come back to. The food was overpriced (seriously, I had sticker shock when I walked in), there just isn't enough seating considering how many people come through here, and there was just a lot of wasted space. I got the tuna sandwich based on the recommendation of the guy taking my order. Don't get me wrong, it was good, though nothing spectacular. The white bread was white bread and $8 for a sandwich just hurts. I got the lunch special which included a tiny fruit salad (not worth mentioning), an enormous cookie and I got a drink. It is hard to expound on the place since there just wasn't anything that stood out. The guy that took the order was on top of his game with great customer service, personality, and he was fast both behind the counter and clearing the tables. The other staff I encountered weren't nearly as friendly and tiptoeing on rudeness. With the parking lot being so full, traffic being a pain with the Rice crowd, and the prices being so high, it just won't entice me to ever come back.

Yelp
Love Picnic. Love the concept. Love the bread. You can do a box lunch or have an individual sandwich. In the box lunch there is a fresh fruit cup with mint (nice touch), chips, a cookie and a sandwich. Honestly, we break the box down into 2 different meals. It's a lot of food. My favorites are the tuna and ham and cheese, but I suppose I am normally a sandwich purist. The sandwiches will not wow you with cheap thrills like truffle oil or arugula, it's just a straight up great quality meat, cheese on some amazing homemade bread. Huge fan of their peanut butter cookies. But my favorite part? Is their bread. Their bread is seriously the best sandwich bread money can buy. It tastes better than mass produce store bought bread-like product and stays fresh just as long. The 7 seed is my absolute favorite. Can't explain it, it's just awesome. Go get a loaf!

Merrill G.

Yelp
I really don't get this place at all. As you walk in, you'll spot all these nice looking fresh breads. Would you like one of those on your sandwich? No, you're getting white. And you're getting Mayo on that white bread with a generous potion of meat slopped in the center with inches of plain Mayo bread surrounding. A single slice of cheese cut thin enough to read through will round out what must be the laziest sandwich. Pretty it ain't. You get chips with your sandwich so please read the tiny note with the list on the case in front of you because it isn't on the menu. I think the worst part is the food isn't bad. It'd be easier to deal with this level of thoughtlessness if the food sucked too; at least then it would make sense. Also in the corner of the room is a wire rack of cheap plastic junk noone would want to buy wtf is up with that? What a schitzophrenic place!
google avatar

Yelp
If it was not for the moldy fruit cup, this place would have merited a 3 or better. However, the surprise mold at the bottom left me with a terrible experience. The Pork Tenderloin sandwich as very satisfying though, as well as the chewy cookie. I would opt out of any fruit cups if you feel an urge to visit this place.

Yelp
I really want to like this place, but it's just too overpriced for a simple sandwich shop. Let me preface. The ingredients are fresh, the desserts are pretty good, and the interior and concept are cute and kitschy without being over the top. There is a map directing you to "picnic spots" in the area, or if you want to dine in, there are a couple of large picnic tables to enjoy your boxed lunch (sandwich, chips, and a cookie). Here's where I have a problem. The food: You get to choose the stuffing for your sandwich, however in a bakery I expect to have the daily bread as an option. White and wheat are just too boring for $8. The meat options are a little on the cheap side, as well. The interior: The tables are oftentimes not wiped down. I understand that it can get busy, but there are a lot of messy people out there. Again, $8 is just too much to eat a mediocre sandwich on a picnic table slightly reminiscent of a Jr high cafeteria. The lines: Forget about going during 12pm-1pm. There is a line down (or is it up?) Bissonnet to find a parking space, a line to order a sandwich, and then another line to wait for your sandwich.

Yelp
Five stars for the bread, 1 star for the sandwiches. Picnic makes some of the best fresh bread I've had in Houston, especially when you factor in creative flavors like raisin pecan, rosemary sage, and jalapeno cheese. At $4.50 a loaf for the specialty breads, it's expensive but worth it. I assumed the sandwiches would be equally delicious, but I was disappointed. I ordered the char-grilled veggie sandwich, which claims to have "zucchini, portabella mushrooms, red bell peppers, goat cheese, and avocado/basil mayo on a baguette with lettuce and tomato." What I got was a slightly stale baguette with a freezing-cold scoop of chopped roasted veggies along with a lettuce leaf and an anemic tomato slice. If goat cheese and avocado/basil mayo were involved, I couldn't tell. In addition to lacking flavor, the sandwich was completely impossible to eat due to the frigid temperature and the minced vegetables constantly dropping out of the baguette. My fiancé's ham and swiss was better, but not much. I don't like writing really negative reviews, but when you pay more than $6 for a sandwich, you expect it to be better than this!

Yelp
My group in the medical center uses Picnic all the time to cater meetings. The catering managers are extremely helpful and accommodating. We once had a huge mix up with another group who was supposed to cater our 50 person meeting. We called Picnic frantically, and the man who helped us was wonderful and was able to accommodate our last minute request. He even delivered everything himself! He was on time, a little early actually, which I thought was extremely professional (and very different from the other group we were using)! There are several boxes lunch options for you to choose from, and they are very reasonably priced. I usually order a mix of sandwiches and salads, and the salads tend to be more popular in the group of doctors and hospital staff that I order for and the meetings I attend. Each boxed sandwich comes with a bag of chips, a slice of pickle, a container of fruit, and a cookie. Boxed salads come with a roll, container of fruit, and a cookie, and dressing on the side. If you're looking for good boxed lunches for a meeting, I would definitely recommend Picnic.

Yelp
Never fails. Hands down the most delicious chicken salad sandwich! They have great box lunches as everyone has mentioned that includes: - the sandwich (big enough that could sort of be split into two portions) - a fruit cup - a sour pickles slice - a cookie of your choosing, pecan choco chip, PB, and others - condiments and utensils I mean, who could resist when it serves to fulfill your daily servings of all the goodies. The service is quick as much of it has been previously prepared. They have a wide variety of drinks that they trust you enough to let you help yourself after you've paid. It's corny, but my boyfriend and I gotten picnic to have picnics, heehee. Do drive on by to the cute little place and enjoy yourselves! P.S. he ordered the spicy shrimp sandwich and enjoyed it.

Yelp
I feel like a chump for just discovering this gem. We tend to eat out a lot at work and Picnic is always my choice. They have the perfect little boxed lunches, the goodies wrapped delicately in colored tissue. Having tried several sandwiches my favorite by mile is the egg salad. The bread is fresh and soft with a chewy crust served with the perfect amount of egg salad, with olives mind you, and lettuce; a pickle spear, chips, fruit and a cookie accompany your lunch. Check out their website for a link to nearby picnic spots!!

Yelp
Drive up and they take your order at the car! Sandwiches and salads and kids sack lunches! We waited with windows down and they bring the food to ya with 5min wait time. Great service!! They have outdoor seating as well! What an awesome neighborhood find.

Yelp
Whenever I think of the West University area of Houston, I usually think of quirkiness and uniqueness not usually possessed in the suburban areas. Some businesses in this area can have excessive amounts of quirkiness and uniqueness that, let's just say, can be "overwhelming". However, when I happened to be in the museum district and stumbled upon going to Picnic for lunch, I discovered this restaurant was "overwhelmingly simple". The restaurant has the refreshing approach of taking you back to the communal experience of eating with people at a picnic. While there is a variety of sandwiches, soups, salads, and desserts, the core item in the menu is "the basket". When your order a "basket" you choose a sandwich, bag of chips, and a homemade cookie. The menu is simple, but the items are classics with modern twists, including a chicken salad with sun-dried tomatoes and basil, an egg salad with olives, and a pork tenderloin sandwich with basil mayonnaise. The experience is completed by eating your meal at the long, wooden tables with benches. Enjoying my meal at the "picnic table" made me feel like an outdoor picnic was transported indoors. The simplicity in the nostalgia of the experience is something that will make me a return customer.

Yelp
I've had the boxed lunches from Picnic many times over the last few years, but this past Friday was the first time I actually set foot in their store. It shares parking with other stores in this strip, and despite going after the lunch rush, parking was still pretty full. I've had the chicken salad sandwich (yum) and the turkey & avocado (yum). They have Zapp's chips in many flavors and excellent cookies for dessert. The service was adequate, the dining room was clean. There's absolutely nothing wrong with Picnic, but there's not outstanding either. I could go back, or not and I'd still be alright.

Yelp
What a great deal when you get the boxed lunch! Fruit cup, pickle, sandwich, chips, and a cookie for under $10. If only they had fountain sodas, then we would be better set! I always do get bummed when they run out of the lemon cookies, which are my favorite, highly reccomend! We come here all of the time due to its close proximity to work. Their sandwiches are fine and the service is really quick. I don't love their chicken salad, but most rave about it. Again, I'm a picky eater though. I like the turkey sandwich, and their pork tender sandwich is actually really good. Parking sucks during lunch, but it is legal to park on some parts of Bissonnet pretty much across the street.

Yelp
I love this low-key lunch place. A lot of their business is take-out, and there are a few tables inside, plus one outdoor table with 2 chairs. Bus your own used dishes, please. There are choices of sandwiches, salads, and delectable muffins and cookies. They, also, make custom cakes, apparently. I ordered the tuna and chicken salad combo. It came with a small fresh fruit cup and a tiny bun. Truly, it was more than I could eat, and the greens were mixed -- not just the nutrient-deficient iceberg lettuce! Service was quick, friendly. You order and pay at the counter, pick up at the counter when your order is called. There is sufficient parking in the adjacent lot. No street parking here. Nice.

Yelp
PROS: Truly delicious sandwiches. CONS: Poor service, limited hours, and staff that shows little excitement or concern for repeat or customers who place large orders.

Yelp
I've never actually been inside Picnic, but it was catered for one of my work events and I got the classic box lunch. Usually I'm just eh about those kinds of catered sandwich lunches (unless it's Jimmy John's, they're in a whole other league) but my Picnic box lunch introduced me to probably the best egg salad sandwich I've ever had. It had green olives and a special basil mayo - I don't know what else they put in there but it was heavenly. The chips on the side were just Lays, so nothing special, and the cookie wasn't anything to rave about, but I did like that the box came with a fruit cup, too. And it was quality fruit - strawberries and blueberries and pineapple, not just the cheap melon mixes you get at a lot of places. I love the concept of the restaurant, and though I initially thought $9.50 was a little steep for a sandwich, chips, fruit, pickle and cookie - especially since that's a pretty easy and cheap lunch to prepare for yourself - if you think about it, buying a 6 inch sub, chips, cookie, and side of fruit from Subway or someplace like that would be just as much, if not more, and Picnic's quality of food is substantially better. You can also get the sandwich on its own for just $6.25, and I would totally take advantage of that just for the egg salad. I wish every work event or meeting I have would use Picnic because it's been by far the best quality food I've ever had at a catered event. Whether you're looking for your next meeting caterer or you're actually going on a picnic, Picnic should definitely be up on your list!

Yelp
We were so excited to eat here. I told the lady I hate onions. I ordered a chef salad. Drove 30 minutes to open my lunch to find spinach salad loaded with purple onions. I am now stranded with no lunch. When I called the first gentleman said my entire order would be refunded due to the mistake. The next lady was not as nice and only refunded my salad. Refunding the salad was what I expected but the first gentleman was so apologetic and I thought these people know how to make a bad situation right. Not so.

Yelp
As I have confessed in the past, I love the idea of picnics but hate the process of making it work . . . So when I want to have a picnic, I just pick up one of Picnic's boxed lunches and head to the dandelion fountain sculpture on Allen Parkway or to Discovery Green. I first got hooked on Picnic at the Jung Center. They always pick up Picnic lunches for their Saturday workshops, and I really enjoyed their chicken salad on sour dough... but seriously, what got me was their chocolate chip cookies. If you really like me, you can get me one of their super awesome white tin cans full of chocolate chip cookies, and you shall be my friend forever. So what if Picnic isn't gourmet sandwiches, and they are a little pricier than subway . . . they are tasty, have good cookies, they deliver aaaand they wrap them in cute little boxes with a sticker. What more can one ask for?

Yelp
I've eaten here multiple times in the past, but haven't been in a few years because it was just meh and there were better options in the area. I remembered the chicken salad and pork tenderloin being my go to sandwiches. It was way past lunch time and I was driving down Bissonnet and craving a simple sandwich so I decided to swing by and grab a sandwich. After much deliberation between the ham and pork tenderloin, I decided to go with the pork tenderloin. Maybe it was because I am a hungry pregnant lady and it was already 2pm and I haven't eaten anything since breakfast, but I inhaled that sandwich! It had a good amount of pork tenderloin, sourdough bread was nice and soft, and the ancho mayo and pickled onions perfectly pulled the sandwich together. It was so good, I decided to go there again the next day. Today I got the ham sandwich. It was very disappointing. The bread was hard and not soft and fluffy like the previous day and the Dijon mustard overpowered the basil mayo, all I tasted was the mustard. The sandwich could've used more ham, there were parts of the sandwich without meat. I'll be back to get the pork tenderloin sandwich because it was pretty darn tasty and to give Picnic a few more tries before I take it off my lunch rotation.

Yelp
Before my daughter and I made our way to the museum district we stopped in Picnic for lunch. The prices kinda caught me off guard(for the two of us eating sandwiches it was almost $20), but it was raining and I didn't want to be out in it and we wanted a quick bite. Which food prep is very quick and tasty ate that. Even my daughter who hates any condiment was loving the basil/garlic mayo on her sandwich..it was very good! I had the baske which comes with a fruit cup, chips, pickle and a cookie! And that cookie was just awesome! The peanut butter cookie I thought was going to be hard was not anything like that when I put a piece in my mouth, it like crumbled perfectly! I enjoyed the food just not the prices..I may go back if I am in that area again!
