The Hottest New Spots for Cocktails in the Twin Cities Right Now

"Picnic, the newest bar to open in Linden Hills, has a succinct cocktail menu that hits all the classics: Pop in for a late-night dirty martini, an unadulterated Old Fashioned, or a Manhattan with balance and bite. The food menu is built for grazing, featuring hot and cold sandwiches, bone marrow fried rice, and various charcuterie boards." - Eater Staff

The Hottest New Restaurants in Minneapolis and St. Paul Right Now, May 2024

"E and Andrew Kitzenberg’s neighborhoody new cafe and bar is open in Linden Hills, in the former Clancey’s space. True to its name, Picnic offers a few charcuterie-style boards for grazing, plus sandwiches (halloumi; ham and salted butter; Italian; etc.), soups and salads, hot dogs, desserts, and a few mains, like sausage lasagna loaded with fresh, tangy mozzarella. A snacky late-night menu features bites like smoked trout dip and pimento cheese; the sizeable wine list is annotated with helpful descriptions (“crushable café red;” “salty Sicilian stunner”). Good news for late-night diners — Picnic is open until 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday." - Eater Staff

We really enjoyed our evening here. We sat at the bar, and lucked out ordering two old fashioneds, as New Riff had just been there and paid them forward. What a treat! We ordered the meat/cheese board, the bruschetta burrata, and carrot cake (made locally by one of the staff). All delicious!! The vibe and atmosphere made it extra fun, as some of the other patrons at the bar and Pete (the amazing bartender) chatted with us. Overall, we had a fabulous night here. We'll be back. Thanks for the great service.

I stopped in to try a sandwich, it's a small upscale bar. I settled on the Hazel Basil and thought it was good but didn't love it. I appreciate the restaurants focus on high end ingredients. If I was looking to share a Charcuterie board with friends, enjoy a few glasses of wine or cocktails, this would be my spot.

Google
We recently went on a dinner date with another couple here because it was highly recommended by our friends coworker. The atmosphere and food was fantastic everything we got was perfectly prepared and tasted amazing. Our server was a younger girl, I wish we would have gotten her name because she was awesome as well, perfect balance of attentiveness 👌🏼. I would recommend this place to anyone. There’s plenty of close street parking near by. Just one last heads up they do not currently take cash.

Google
Picnic Linden Hills absolutely knocked it out of the park catering our event! From start to finish, the service was flawless, and the food… WOW. Every bite was delicious, thoughtfully curated, and left our guests raving. Huge shoutout to Loretta and Bryan for their incredible service—friendly, professional, and total crowd-pleasers! They made sure everything ran smoothly, from set-up to take-down, keeping it seamless, clean, and efficient. And Kitz, E, and the talented chefs? They put together the perfect menu, making the entire experience effortless and beyond enjoyable. If you need catering for an event, a top-notch lunch, or even a happy hour treat—look no further. Picnic Linden Hills is the real deal, and I highly recommend them. Can’t wait for our next excuse to book them again! 🙌✨🍽️

Google
We enjoyed picnic 3 times in one weekend during our visit to linden hills. Great deviled eggs, sandwiches , chicken wings, cocktails and beer selections. Great service, cute vibe, and everything we ordered was nicely prepared.

Google
Best food we had all weekend for our girls trip to Minneapolis! Something for everyone, including the kids (although we left ours at home!) Flavorful, eclectic menu, whether you just want a small bite with a drink, or a full on experience. Friendly service, beautiful aesthetic and ambiance, and super fun neighborhood vibe in the evening. Elevated but approachable. Will definitely go back!

Google
I was so impressed by the food and staff at Picnic! We went with a big group so I was able to taste a lot of the menu and everything was delicious. I especially liked the Veg Halloumi sandwich and the Shrimp Roll but you can’t go wrong with anything you choose. The Picnic Dog is lots of fun rolled in crispy provolone cheese. The place has a great vibe, is super clean, and, the staff were all amazing — so friendly and very efficient. If you haven’t been to Picnic yet, I recommend you swing by and check it out!

Google
Highlight spot for casual food and cocktails in a strong restaurant neighborhood. I’ve enjoyed the Bear and Shrimp rolls. Very solid old fashioned. Service is always welcoming and friendly. Can’t go wrong at Picnic.

Yelp
Stopped by here after having a couple of drinks at the wooden ship. It was a nice day so we sat in the back in the little alleyway where they have a few tables. It's was an interesting seating arrangement. Quite unique. The server was super nice. For us our waters and the we started off with a couple beers and their wings. The food came out quick. The wings were pretty good. Not crispy like I was expecting but good flavor. The piri piri on top was pretty tasty. I would have liked them to be a little more crispy For the mains, we got the special which was braised beef cheeks and the steelhead trout. The food was tasty. The beef cheeks were tender and had a thick sauce. The trout was cooked well and a good piece of grilled fish. For dessert we had the chocolate cake which was tasty and big enough to share. It was tasty if a tad dry. The Madeira was not. Overall a decent dining experience with decent food and great service. A good addition to all the other eateries in the area.

Yelp
The food is great. Great staff. Nice cocktail and wine selections. Great PQR. The back patio is nice and the front patio can be great once the roads are fixed. Definitly on my besy of Minnapolis list.

Yelp
Adorable spot for a fancy night out. Not a ton of seating, but my friend and I arrived around 5 and had no issue snagging a spot. We shared a charcuterie board and wine. Both were so good, but we saw some plates of sandwiches and salads and...I will definitely want to come back to try those because they looked really good!!!! Definitely on the pricey side but worth it for a fun outing. The staff were so so so friendly, some of the best service I've experienced in MPLS!!

Yelp
My wife and I were out on our weekly new restaurant Saturday lunch trek. We saw that Picnic opened recently and it was on our list. It was a perfect day in Edina and there was construction in front of the establishment, so we had a two block walk. I feel bad that they have completely cut off the street from traffic, but it was still pretty full at noon. It is a pretty small place, so my wife and I sat at the bar. I ordered a Size 7 IPA from Steel Toe, a place about a couple miles from here that makes great beer. We ordered an order of deviled eggs and the beef sandwich. Bartender was great at refreshing our waters and the food came out quick. The deviled eggs were perfect, really smooth texture and not bad for the $7.50 price tag. The beef sandwich had a ton of coleslaw on top with what seemed like fresh baked bread. The bread was exemplary and the beef had the wonderful taste of seeping in red wine. It was super tender and the red wine taste was just perfect. Highly recommended. Great lunch, I ordered a second IPA and it was $50 after tip. Try it out.

Yelp
Amazing service! Fun sense of humor from our waiter. The bar is the most gorgeous aspect of the space. This is a great spot to grab drinks. They offer food and have nice options. I tried the award winning, critic claiming breakfast sandwich. The Golden Hour N/A was 10/10 My friends all enjoyed their dishes + drinks

Yelp
Cute space in Linden Hills that centers around the bar. Simple and small menu that is more assembled than cooked (salads, charcuterie, dips). Better for a snack and drink than a meal. Started with the soup of the day (chicken corn chowder) that was pretty good. Also shared the apple prosciutto salad and deviled eggs with a friend. The deviled eggs were recommended by the server, and were nicely presented with a chili crisp paste on top, but were disappointingly bland and completely underseasoned. The salad was fresh and had a little more flavor.

Yelp
Nice little spot in the previous Clancey's Meat & Fish. Specializing in martini's, bourbons and sharable plates.

Yelp
I really wanted to love this place. Linden Hills needs this kind of restaurant. Unfortunately the sandwiches were not very special. The ingredients were good but not enough and the bread was actually very bland. I would recommend they get their bread from a high end bakery. The atmosphere was great with plenty of outdoor space. The service was excellent. I would consider trying again but I would not get the sandwiches unless they improve the quality.

Yelp
Just went for the grand opening and it's such a cool place. Limited menu and crazy busy but everyone was super nice and happy to help. I'll definitely be back to try the full menu and see how it evolves.

Yelp
I have been there 3 times in the past 2 weeks ;) It is a great neighborhood restaurant which is perfect for a easy good bite to eat that is also open late for a drink with a friend.

Really tasty food (chicken sandwich for me and a pasta for my friend) with great service.

Yelp
Visited 4/27. This place is an adorable new community-based spot. My sister currently lives in Linden Hills neighborhood and we agreed that this place for us may become a frequent summer spot for sipping and snacking post walks around the lake. They have a full bar in addition to the drinks on the menu and boast many different drink options (beer on tap, wine, cocktails). I got a gin and tonic with my sister getting a vodka dirty martini and our friend getting an old fashioned. These drinks were nice and strong so they were perfectly paired with some food. I got the beef sandwich, with my sister getting the hazel basil without prosciutto (vegetarian) and our friend getting the regular hazel basil. All of us were impressed with these and would definitely order again. Mine was the perfect balance of coleslaw on top with soft bread and nice warm beef in the middle. I planned on eating half but found myself devouring the whole thing. Service was solid with kind servers who checked in on us just the right amount. I hope the best for this newcomer!

Yelp
Exceptional pop-up Sunday! @bar-siena It's like an invite to the chefs home! Picnic bringing up and coming chefs to you! Rhett & Emily Roberts @ barsiena

Yelp
We went for the first time for dinner last night and it was great! They had a Cambodian pop up so we tried the braised short rib over rice (incredible), the curry (was okay), the bok lahong (great flavor!) and the corn (also good). Our server was so lovely. Bryan (with a Y) was so attentive, he knew all the pronunciations of the menu items, and kept our waters filled the whole time. The only regret I have is sitting on the patio. It's a skinny alleyway between the restaurant and a fence surrounded by buildings, so there is no sun. Not a deal breaker, just wish we would have sat inside or out front! Definitely worth checking out for a pop up. We will be back to try the regular menu.

Yelp
I needed a quick lunch after a medical appointment and Yelp guided me to Picnic. It was a nice fall-like day so I chose the quaint little patio. I had checked the menu prior to coming and thought their Hot Dog and Chicken sandwich sounded good. When I got here, I asked what the server and cook said and though they claimed to have the best hotdog in town, the server said the sandwich was her favorite and that "you can't beat that spreadable Brie" , and since I just had a heart monitor put on for high cholesterol, I opted for the Chicken over the beef. It was awesome. I wasn't super hungry, so I took half the baguette off thinking I would do myself a favor. I then noticed that that was, in fact, spreadable Brie on there so I ate it as an after lunch appetizer - it was really good. They have a solid NA beverage selection as well. I highly recommend it and look forward to coming back sooner rather than later for the Hot Dog, maybe when my numbers go down a little :). Thanks team Picnic for the highly pleasant lunch on an otherwise challenging Friday :)

Yelp
Terrible service. Rushed us through out our time. Also weren't attentive to the groups needs.

Edna B.

Yelp
This was a very pleasant surprise. With a name like Picnic, I wasn't sure what to expect but the food was great and the wine was excellent. The bartender was awesome. Very friendly. It is rather small but it was very bright and cheery. I would be happy to return.

Yelp
Best hot dog I've ever had! Different and familiar at the same time. Fabulous toasted bun. I enjoyed each bite. My son loved the wild rice soup and he's very picky about how it is made. The Bear sandwich was so delicious and so large that we had to take half home and it was just as good the next day. This restaurant will be a regular place for us to eat!

Yelp
Super yummy Italian sandwich (although too much mayo) and a great picnic board with amazing shrimp salad and loved the pickled green beans! Can't wait to try the amazing cocktails on a future visit!

Yelp
Food: 4/5. Service 4/5. Trout dip; picnic dog; hazel basil. Porch pounder rosé. Fun lunch spot.

Yelp
Great ambience and service. Got a Southend Board and Hazel Basil sandwich, both were delicious!

Anita M.

Yelp
The hot dog was really good. That is all. The service was AWFUL. our server's first night on the job, with "25 years in the industry", he had no idea how to be cordial to our table. He made it very clear that he was too overwhelmed to be decent. And when we tried to have discussion with the bartender who claimed to be a manager, he argued that the last thing they want to do is be seen as a "high end" place, like Martina, across the street. I have been to many "high end" restaurants that do not treat people with such indignity. It was such an unpleasant experience I would never go back if it weren't for my family's pleadings to not judge it by this one event. It will be a while. If this behavior continues, I doubt the restaurant will.

Yelp
Enjoyed trying something new in the neighborhood. Had the Bahn Mi Special . Bahn mi was ok. Can get better with more meat/vegetables on eat street for a more affordable price. Did it taste ok - yeah. Would I return specifically for the bahn mi, no. I wouldn't have hated it if it had come with chips. Also had The Bandshell which was 3 small dips, a small cup of artichoke and some pita for $23. Might have been nice if it came with some almonds or olives or something. Dips were good but nothing out of the ordinary. I guess I don't know how much things cost. Service was friendly.

John R.

Yelp
Great neighborhood place to hang and eat. Love the full bar and friendly staff. . . . . . . . . . .

Brad G.

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch and shared the Italian sandwich. Great quality meat and cheese. Bread is a perfect bah mi Vietnamese roll. Large portion and glad we split. Skip the potato/beet salad. Price is reasonable at $15. Great addition to the neighborhood.

Ligaya C.

Yelp
Food and Service were really good. Casual feel to dining in yet food was sophisticated. Enjoyed my drink too. We sat on a high top. Not a huge space but very comfortable lunch.

Daniel S.

Yelp
Great spot for a few pops and some dinner to go. Will be back. Owner is a really cool guy.

Alison B.

Yelp
What a great, new treasure for Linden Hills! Service was topnotch, including the chef at the open kitchen. I questioned whether I should order the haloumi sandwich but went for it. So damn good. My dining partners ordered the egg sandwich, the soup, and the Hazel basil sandwich. All reported to be terrific. They've done a nice job at transforming the Clancy meat market into a comfortable, well thought out space. It was a bit noisy, but it was Saturday night dinner, and the place was hopping, so it wasn't surprising or too bad. Go there for the food, the drinks, and for the owners who are, obviously, very invested in creating a fantastic new dining experience for the southwest Minneapolis folks.

Kevin M.

Yelp
Had the charcuterie board and a hot dog. Everything on the board was delicious. You could tell they spent time choosing what to put on it. Wine list was well selected. Even though the place was packed, service was prompt and food came out quickly. The tin roof and crowd made it loud, but that was a minor distraction. I look forward to trying more of their menu.
