I think I enjoy the idea of pico cafe more than the actual experience of dinning at pico cafe.
The food is affordable, they have a large variety of dishes to choose from on the menu, they offer both indoor and outdoor seating, and happen to be walking distance from me.
However, this is more of an illusion. The restaurant is normally dirty, I've been sat at tables and had to request they clean them more than once. The food is normally a let down, today I got a grilled vegetable salad with goat cheese and a Greek bagel. The grilled veggies were cold, they didn't bring out the garlic toast the salad comes with, and the Greek bagel was a sad thin mess at room temperature.
The service is an issue as well. Most servers will argue with small accommodations such as a different cheese, or avocado on the side. The servers are hard to find, you will most likely have to go in and get your server when you need to order, or get your check.
Because they are a kosher restaurant, in a neighborhood where the majority of people keep kosher they get business. This place is great for picky eaters, or to accommodate a larger party.
If this were a non kosher cafe they wouldn't have business at all. There isn't much appeal to a place that is dirty, has poor service, and below average food.
Why do I keep going back? Only because of friends in the area who want something simple like soup, or coffee mid day. Both my company and I normally agree that eating there was a poor decision. Yet we are clearly masochist and continue to dine there again.
Pico Cafe, please change this, so I can change my review and rave about your improvements. I want to like your establishment!!
