The Best Restaurants in San Marcos | Eater Austin

"Brought to you by the Katz Brothers, founders of popular San Marcos spots North Street and Zelicks, this strip mall pizzeria has become a local favorite for imaginative pies. Try the San Martian, an elotes pizza with Dos Equis-braised chicken, Mexican street corn, and cilantro-lime crema. The laid-back, brewery-style setting offers a dining experience that feels like dinner and a show, with a mix of standard tables and bench seating, as well as a full view of the kitchen where the pizza-making process is on full display. Takeout and delivery orders can be placed online." - Kimberly Olivas

I had an amazing experience at Pie Society! The pizza was absolutely delicious—easily some of the best I’ve had in a long time. The dough had incredible flavor and was cooked to perfection: crispy on the outside and full of taste throughout. The service was awesome—friendly, quick, and attentive. You can tell they put real care into their craft. I’ll definitely be coming back for more. Highly recommend for any true pizza lover!

This is my second time contemplating leaving a negative review for Pie Society, the first time when we got there for the pickup we were informed the online pickup was down and that they would replace our order. After waiting another forty minutes the pizza was finally ready, but it was missing the sausage and spinach from the original order, but with an addition we didn’t order, hair! We messaged with the manager and they got the situation resolved. Tonight was our first time going back since then, our order was placed at 8:23, pickup was at 8:53 which is when we got there. They didn’t have it out to us until after 9:20. When we opened the box it was missing the sausage again, so we took it back up and they said they would add it, after 15-20 more minutes we got the pizza back, it was now cold but we had a tiny side of sausage fit for one or two slices(pictured above), how that took them over fifteen minutes I have no idea… very disappointed with these past experiences.

The pizza was delicious, as was the Texas goat cheese appetizer. This is a buzzy place - busy too! The staff were all friendly and made us feel welcome. We will definitely be back!

Google
Best pizza we’ve had in Texas — hands down! We had an incredible experience at Pie Society Pizza in San Marcos. The vibe of the place is super cool — young, energetic, and welcoming. The staff is friendly, upbeat, and made us feel right at home from the moment we walked in. We ordered a half-and-half pizza: Pyramid on one side and Justice on the other. Both were out of this world! The flavors were bold, creative, and perfectly balanced. You can tell they use quality ingredients and really care about what they’re doing. Honestly, this might be the best pizza we’ve had in all of Texas. If you’re in San Marcos — or even just passing through — don’t miss this place. Can’t wait to come back!

Google
We placed an on line order for the handshake pizza. It was ready more or less at the promised time. Staff was really busy as it was dinner hour. The pizza tasted great!! Would order again. The pies are huge, we had 2 meals from a 16". I also like that I see pie society activity in the community participating in multiple events.

Google
Pizza is very good! Shout out to all the pie makers. I always check one thing first when I enter a restaurant and that is a cleanliness the place in my opinion needs a deep cleaning in the paint job. I would have given a five star otherwise

Google
I recently visited Pie Society and had an exceptional experience. From the moment we walked in, the staff was incredibly friendly, making us feel welcome. The atmosphere was amazing, providing a comfortable and enjoyable dining environment. Service was impressively fast, which we appreciated. The prices were decent, offering good value for the quality of food served. Speaking of the food, the pizza was both visually appealing and absolutely delicious. My daughter had a meatball sandwich, which she thoroughly enjoyed. The pizzas we ordered were equally fantastic. Overall, Pie Society exceeded our expectations in every way. I highly recommend this place for anyone looking for great pizza and excellent customer service.

Google
This is a favorite go to place for pizza (and for takeout). We typically get the San Martian and/or the Garden of Eden - both are super delicious. The service has consistently been excellent (friendly and prompt).

Yelp
Good drinks and good pizza. I didn't realize that I could order a half of one type, along with a half of another pizza. Don't forget to check out their happy hours specials, one of which is a 16" pepperonI & cheese pizza discounted. They don't take reservations m even for large groups. We had 12 in our party, and had to chance it without reservations. We were fine because we ate early, otherwise you might want to go elsewhere. We'll be back!

Yelp
Hey, the pizza was good. The service had a few issues. I ordered on their website and went to pay, and an error popped up and indicated that the website could not process any order over 100 dollars. There was no indication prior to the error dialogue box. Okay, so I called and the young lady, told her that I had an order for pickup, and suggested I try another website...and I asked if I could place the order over the phone. She said we don't do delivery over the phone. I continued, restating what I was trying to do, oh okay. I told her the order, she read it back to me and gave me a total. So far, so good. When I arrived she said she was adding a large party gratuity, but don't worry, it's only 24 dollars. I asked why I was being told after the total over the phone...and she said it was policy. I just wish she would have said so at the time of the order so I could check with the group because, you know...that's how I thought things should work. The point is I didn't feel like I was appreciated as a customer, and I generally don't keep going back if I get less than what I think I'm paying for. I also don't think a tip is appropriate on a to go order. Tips in a restaurant, yes. Just know before you go, because this night was too full of surprises for me. I like things to be easy when I'm paying.

Yelp
Considering how much of my money goes to Pie Society by way of my Texas State Student, I had to give them a try for myself. I know for my child they go there partly out of convenience, but even college students have standards, especially when spending other people's money. Personally I was impressed enough that they have become our go to place for grabbing dinner when in town to see our child perform in the nearby performance hall. I appreciate that they have creative pizzas that they offer by the slice. My favorite is the Balance of Power with spinach, spicy sausage, crushed red pepper and Texas honey. Their toppings are fresh, the sauce is nicely seasoned, and the crust is thin but holds up to the toppings well. Their by the slice prices are reasonable. I also give them props for having Stubborn sodas on tap. The atmosphere is warm, bright, and open inside and also has tables set up outside. The restaurant and restrooms have been clean and in order everytime we've been. Staff have been friendly and service has been quick.

Yelp
I own a local campground and ordered 4 18 inch pizza pies for visiting campers 2 were ok and 2 were not I called and spoke to assistant manager who asked for my email and said he would send a way to get replacement for the 2 pies. THIS DID NOT HAPPEN. I called back later and the manager Bruce answered and asked many of the same question and many more. The bottom line is Pie Society caters to TSU students and don't care about the rest of the community. The pizza was burned on the bottom. I've never gotten a burned pizza in my 64 years. This place doesn't only burn their pizza but then they argue with you about it SAD Just read some of the other reviews the consistent thread is poor customer service

Earlene F.

Yelp
We couldn't have been more pleased with the way Bruce handled this very large order! He delivered 32 pies and they were hot and fresh. Delicious!! He kept me informed until delivery time. We will be back!

Yelp
I was excited to try this place for good reviews and highly recommended by friend. The pizza we got tonight was not good, the dough was old and really disappointed.
google avatar

Lauren S.

Yelp
Really fun theming, probably the most amused I've been at menu names in a while. That is until my friend pointed out how similar it was to the East Side Pies theming. Our pizza came out super fast, though

Yelp
Great pies! Excellent service! Pizza was fantastic place was clean! Enjoy the appetizers too!

Cindy W.

Yelp
Food always amazing! Service was good. Ambiance is interesting! We will return, and try something else next time.

Lisa M.

Yelp
I love this place! If you are looking for some new pizza combos, this is the place to go. If you are wanting plain pepperoni, or just plain cheese, they got you too! I make the 50 mile drive to get my son the Balance of Power. The San Martian is also a favorite of ours. The staff is always helpful and they all seem to have super cool personalities. Highly recommend this pizza place. And if you want a great salad I recommend their Strawberry Goat Cheese Salad, deliciousness!

David C.

Yelp
Went back today because it's near my job and I forgot my lunch. Why is everyone so rude here? The girl with the blonde shoulder length hair who takes the food to the tables was very short and rude to me. Looked at me like I'm some kind of predator. Never coming back.
google avatar

Raul O.

Yelp
I just went in last week to try it for the first time. I asked the girl working at the front what she recommended that's gluten free. She told me all the special pizzas could be done gluten free. I went with the pepperoni and pepperoncinis and it was so good, the dough was thicker than most pizza places usually make them, and the manager that ran it to me gave me extra ranch and peppers. The place seems really clean and it had good vibes. If the gluten free pizza is amazing, I can't imagine what the regular pizza tastes like.
google avatar

Gem T.

Yelp
Balance of Power. Yup, once you've had it , there is no going back. Pie Society is our favorite pizza place in the area. Piping hot, thin crust pizzas, cold beer, the best pink lemonade I have ever had and consistent good service. They are also very family and group friendly. We will be back!
google avatar

Hannah A.

Yelp
Freshly made for you every time! Calling in orders are easy and efficient. Always a great experience.

Yelp
Great food and good value. Totally would be back for their pizza. Service is always good here.

Yelp
Man this place hasn't changed much, in the best way! My husband and I got them to cater our wedding and still have people mention to us about the great pizza they had at our wedding, years later! We don't live close anymore but while we were in town with family we managed to pick up an artichoke dip and balance of power to go, the night before thanksgiving. Absolutely fantastic place, food, and service. Management was phenomenal for our wedding, and any staff person is very cordial and helpful. Still one of our favorite San Marcos eateries. Ps- very tidy, roomy, and clean bathroom! They had a clean and sturdy changing table in there too. Weird thing to note and take pictures of but as someone who has traveled with little ones I feel that's a great bonus.

Yelp
Delicious pizza in a very cool environment. Unexpected in a strip mall near the Texas State campus! My friends had pizza, I had a calzone. Large glass bottle of Mexican Coke are always a winner for this group. Utterly fantastic music selection, nice friendly young staff. Fast service, seat yourself. Paper towel rolls for napkins. Perfect pizza place!
google avatar

Karen H.

Yelp
We so love this place we drive up from San Antonio sometimes just to get a pie or meet friends traveling through the area. They truly have the best pies. Yesterday we happened to be in town and stopped by. We ordered half Balance of Power and pepperoni and sausage. For the first time it came burnt. But being hungry and not wanting to complain proceeded to eat. Manager came by and ask how our meal was today and explained. Told us we should tell them so they can do better. Even though we were full he offered to remake for home. WOW! Where do you find service like this anywhere these days. Floored. And sure enough they made it right.
google avatar

Alex F.

Yelp
The pizzas from pie society are SOOOO GOOD. I used to work in a pizza restaurant like this one in high school and I feel right at home here. They have a small but good beer and cider selection too.
google avatar

Tiffany J.

Yelp
Pizza was delicious and staff was great! We took a basketball team and parents to eat here and they were so accommodating. Highly recommend and would definitely come again.
google avatar

Souperbre B.

Yelp
Awesome pizza and drinks. Great atmosphere. It's close to campus and easy to get to. Sometimes parking is tight but worth it.

Yelp
While in San Marcos, you gotta visit Pie Society! Seriously such a great pizza spot. Wide selection of pies, starters, salads, and calzones. We went in for a couple slices and split the Greek salad and some garlic knots as well. Got The Pyramid (Garlic infused extra virgin olive oil, fresh spinach, ricotta, fresh mozzarella, Texas goat cheese) and the Balance of Power (Fresh spinach, spicy sausage, crushed red peppers & a touch of Texas honey) slices and wow they were both phenomenal! Everything we had was amazing. Great atmosphere, super friendly staff as well. Ordered a Live Oak Hefeweizen to wash it down because it's one of the best craft beers in Texas. Can't wait to go back and try more of their pies!

Robert T.

Yelp
Excellent pizza. Crust crispy and toppings fresh. Meats tasty and veggies fresh. Good value.

Kinsey N.

Yelp
SO delicious it's my favorite pizza place ever!! i've been going here for years and the pizza and service is still great. I love the outdoor and indoor seating options and the decoration is so fun.
google avatar

Dacota L.

Yelp
Creative pizzas with obviously well sourced ingredients. We had the Texas Goat Cheese, Garlic Knots, and a large Balance of Power. All of it was perfectly cooked and portioned for the price!
google avatar

Sonja M.

Yelp
The pizza is amazing! We shared a small 18 inch since the small is large. It was amazing Great job ya'll
google avatar

Neesha P.

Yelp
Plenty of signature pizza options for vegetarians. We ordered the garden of Eden pizza and Greek salad. The shareable size is good for 3-4 people. I loved how the salad came out first. I personally thought the salad had a little too much dressing, but the flavors from the capers and olives was fresh and tangy. The pizza was served hot! It looked amazing. The crust is extremely thin, right up my alley. The tail end of the crust is flaky, almost like a croissant. I am not a big soda person, but my dad mentioned that they have a local brewery supply their fountain drinks and the flavors are very unique. The prickly pear cactus lemonade was tangy and good.
google avatar

Reuben M.

Yelp
Ordered the 18" holy grail. Pepperoni and mushrooms. Live oak Hefeweizen on tap., What else do you need?
google avatar

Pam F.

Yelp
Definitely has the "college student hangout" vibe, but on a Tuesday night mid-June, the clientele was more reserved. Order at the counter (booze and food); pay or open a tab; and have a seat--everything is served to your table with a smile! Margaritas and Palomas were sufficiently strong and tasty. Goat Cheese appetizer would have been SUPERB if it had had a few more toasts (we had way more toppers once the toasts were gone) and if the roasted garlic had been all the way roasted (delicious but not even semi-soft). The honey on that goat cheese plate was delicious!! Pizza was exactly the right amount of greasy (not too much) and the crust was perfectly chewy-crispy!! Will be back next time we're in San Marcos!

Angel G.

Yelp
Ordering is a little awkward. The fountain drinks are really tasty and refreshing. Seating and bathrooms are pretty accessible. Staff seems nice. I like the garlic knots, very big and fluffy and comes with marinara but you can also ask for ranch. Deserts come from a local business. I didn't get the pizza because I don't like thin crust pizza, but my friend does and she says it's good. Can get individual slices
google avatar

Andy K.

Yelp
Whole family, kids included, loved our pizza. We liked the option to buy a slice and will take advantage of that next time. Bbq was our favorite.

bree ..

Yelp
Always a good environment, friendly staff and quick and easy to order and enjoy your meal! Absolutely worth it

Teale R.

Yelp
I love everything about pie society from the ambiance to the food! I go at least twice a week! I would recommend the el Diablo and the balance of power :) one of my favorite places in San Marcos!

Marvin W.

Yelp
Pizza is always excellent, our go to favorite is the "Justice" with House-made fennel sausage, New York-style pepperoni, local mushrooms, red onion & ricotta. Absolutely delicious. We have lived in Indiana, Kansas, Colorado, Florida and Texas. This is one of the best Pizza's we have ever eaten. The only comparable Pizza's would be the "Feast" from Pizza King, on Tillotson In Muncie, Indiana by Ball State University and The "Motherload" at BeauJo's In Idaho Springs, Colorado.

Porter S.

Yelp
Went in hungry and left with an entire pizza. You can probably get by with one for two people.
google avatar

Mayra R.

Yelp
Reliable pizza pies in a laid back atmosphere. Love going in to get slices and a drink. The staff is always super friendly and silly.
google avatar

Jason S.

Yelp
Tried this place after first moving to San Marcos. Got the 79-666 it was a real crowd pleaser with all. Also got the the justice. Amazing pizza with ricotta cheese. Pretty sure we found our new pizza place in SM.
google avatar

Hannah N.

Yelp
Great slices. Love to come here when I'm trying to find tasty food my vegetarian friends can enjoy as well.
google avatar

Ashleigh J.

Yelp
Decided to stop by Pie Society after seeing so many good reviews and hearing so many good things. I can agree with most other reviews on here that the pizza is delicious! They are willing to make dietary accommodations and have vegan and GF options. For me they even made my pizza half with cheese and half without since I am lactose intolerant but didn't want to buy two pizzas just for me and one other person. The pizza is good size and a good value for the quality of pizza you are getting. Staff was very friendly on the phone for ordering and in person even though they were slammed. Beer and drink selection was good and you are able to order a drink while you wait to grab your pizza to go. Ordering to go was about 1 hour wait. Would recommend to anyone wanting some good pizza and cant wait to go back!
google avatar

Wendy W.

Yelp
Perfect! They were so clean, so friendly and the pizza was SO GOOD!! If I loved close I'd be in trouble!
google avatar

Veronica Pagán B.

Yelp
After a long and endless day of shopping at the outlet malls in San Marcos, my husband and I drove the back way into San Antonio and stopped at Pie Society to grab some lunch. I called before arriving to make sure they had gluten-free crust and the girl that answered double checked to make sure they had some available. Once she confirmed, we headed that way and I'm SO glad we did! My husband ordered the Illuminati which is like a margherita pizza, he loved it (though he did wish they would've added more cheese, it had a few bare spots so you may want to ask for double cheese). I ordered the Justice which was so freaking amazing! The fennel sausage is CRAZY good and the local mushrooms took it over the top. And their gluten free crust is made fresh daily and is officially now my favorite gluten free pizza! I was so impressed. The strawberry goat cheese salad was delicious and I loved the garlic balsamic vinaigrette to pour on it, and I couldn't believe how inexpensive it was! I saw on the table that they have a happy hour where you can get a slice and a beer, so you may want to call for details. They have indoor and outdoor dining and a bar. You can even sit and watch them make the pizzas. I definitely recommend, I'm willing to take the drive from San Antonio to San Marcos anytime for this pizza.
google avatar

Mike T.

Yelp
Great pizza! I would have preferred a bit more spinach if I'm being picky, but the pizza was great! The young lady at the counter did an excellent job explaining the menu and giving us recommendations. Definitely give this a try over the regular take out places.

Jennifer K.

Yelp
We've been happy with Pie Society ever since they opened years ago- best pizza in San Marcos! They have gluten free crust and dairy free cheese too!
google avatar

Tim H.

Yelp
My family of 5 got a 16' pie that was half Balance of Power and The Enlightenment. The pizza tasted great - a thinner crust pizza that has good flavor. We also got the Texas Goat Cheese appetizer and I found it to be super good. Instead of using the crostinis, I would spread the garlic and goat cheese on the pizza crust ends. Spent round $45 for 2 pizzas, 1 appetizer, and drinks. Will return if I am ever back in San Marcos.

Nicole K.

Yelp
Excellent customer service and the food was delicious! It was a very large to go order.
google avatar

Robert D.

Yelp
This was our first time ordering from Pie Society. As I entered to pick up our to-go order, I was greeted by several friendly and upbeat staff. My family thoroughly enjoyed the pizza and salads. Definitely recommend Pie Society!
google avatar

Erin M.

Yelp
Fresh ingredients, friendly wait staff. Got a cauliflower crust and it tasted like the real deal. Very good pizza place! And I'm from Chicago, so hard to impress for pizza.

John G.

Yelp
We were on our way back from Big D back to Bulverde and were craving some pizza. Really enjoyed the atmosphere and the staff were very welcoming. Pizza was a solid 4 out of 5 and that 5 rating is a very tough rating to achieve. We would definitely do that again!
google avatar

Mason P.

Yelp
Pie society was amazing. The environment was chill and very appealing. The pizza was also incredible. I had the pyramid pizza and I fell in love.
google avatar

Laura V.

Yelp
My favorite pizza spot in the world! I always order half diablo, half pyramid. Diablo is the perfect mix if you like meat and spicy, and pyramid is just the perfect vegetarian pick! The freshness of the pizzas is amazing! The staff is always happy to help and like to spoil my dogs! The place has plenty of parking spots and even outside seating!
