Chow Oakland Is Closing on Piedmont Avenue - Eater SF

"An ambitious branch of the small local chain Chow, which opened in February and offered a multi-part dining and shopping option, will close on October 29 due to falling short of the requirements necessary for survival." - Caleb Pershan

Chow’s Huge Cafe, Bakery, and Grocery Now Open on Piedmont Ave - Eater SF

"It’s Chow Oakland Cafe, Bakery & Market, at 3770 Piedmont Avenue, and it’s more food palace than pure restaurant. As Gulisano told Eater SF, the Oakland Chow branch boasts kitchen space “essentially woven throughout the market... it’s as if you’re shopping around somebody’s kitchen, with station’s splayed open so cooks themselves and prep cooks can interface with the general public.”" - Caleb Pershan

Google
Piedmont Cafe & Bakery is a great spot for a casual breakfast or lunch. I thoroughly enjoyed my delicious ham & egg sandwich, and the Denver omelette I saw looked amazing too! The service was quick and efficient, and they kept my coffee cup full, which I appreciated. I snagged a window seat with a lovely view of the street shops – very relaxing and a perfect way to enjoy the quaint neighborhood vibe. Highly recommend!

We loved absolutely everything about this place. The food and service were super fast and flawless. Best grilled cheese we had . We also ordered eggs Benedict and apple sausage omelette. All tasty and delicious! Highly recommend!

Google
Piedmont Cafe has been reliably great to me. It’s a no-frills diner, and that’s exactly what I want many days. Prices are good, food is good, and service is always friendly and fast. I recommend one of their omelettes, but I’ve had friends order other things (such as the crab cake benedict) and I’ve always been very impressed when I tried them.

Google
Great, no frills neighborhood breakfast and coffee shop. Traditional selections served plainly and quickly. Front tables situated by large windows make for great people and scenery watching.

i love this place so much - so cozy and homey, diverse menu and food is incredible, and the ladies who work here are lovely

Google
Small establishment, casual. Great for mid aged to elderly people. Quiet and clean. The pancakes and croissants are excellent. The seasoning of the food however was lacking. Portion size great pricing similar to chili's unless you just want a doughnut 🍩 😉 *dish in the photo beef scramble with country potatoes*

Google
Love this place! Delicious & affordable food, clean tables, quiet & homey atmosphere, and such nice service. Came here on a Thursday afternoon and the crowd seem like they're all regulars who have a great relationship with the owners.

Yelp
This is a great gem in Oakland to grab breakfast, lunch, donut and coffee! Food: 5/5 I got a sausage breakfast burrito and it was superb! Loaded with egg and sausage, good amount of cheese, and definitely was filling! The coffee was delicious also! Customer service: 5/5 Our servers were very nice. Quick to refill the drinks and take your order. Price: 5/5 The price is extremely reasonable for the food and the quality. Parking: 2-3/5 It's street parking and it is a busy road. There is also free street parking on some of the side streets. This was a great little neighborhood find on a charming street. You can enjoy a little walk on the street afterward also!

Yelp
Pros: Tasty patty melt on rye Perfectly good coffee No KOIT soft rock on the speakers Friendly service No junk fees Cons: Unskilled service - nobody checked on me I had to ask for water and coffee refills from another waitress The waitress left my dirty dishes in front of me for a long time She ignored me while taking care of the table next to me. Former waitress here: You need to be aware of all the customers and don't get tunnel vision. You need to always have something in your hands instead of ignoring customers while walking by empty-handed.

Yelp
Cute little local Asian owned diner. Came with the fam because I'm worn out after 3 days with my little ones and didn't want to cook or clean for another meal. There is one lady doing it all up front but she was efficient and took our orders and gave us metal cups, not glass which was much appreciated with my kids here. The pancake special comes with two long pieces of bacon and we got two fried eggs which was perfect to split for my kids. The husband got the fried egg sandwich and I got the croissant sandwich with ham. The food here is decent and the bacon was crispy and not swimming in grease. I liked that the fried eggs were also not oily. The pancakes were also not too small or gigantic. Food came out with a decent time and my coffee was made to order. Great local place on Piedmont Ave and I would definitely come back with a book sans kids to just relax and have a leisurely breakfast or lunch another time.

Yelp
This has been my partner and I's go-to diner every weekend for the past few years. I can't recommend it here enough, the food is always delicious with very quick and attentive service. The prices are extremely reasonable as well. It is a cozy classic diner vibe that always makes me feel at home.

Yelp
Good classic diner, asian owned! This place is no frills, unfussy, has been in the neighborhood for ages. Neighborhood locals and families pop by for a good eat. Love the cozy atmosphere of regulars chatting with the waitresses, bonus donuts displayed for purchase, and the extensive menu of getting pretty much everything you could ever want. Note: This place is NOT an IG influencer spot with cute decor, or a 'vibey' place for a first date. We ordered the #3 (3 egg, bacon, sausage, hash browns and a waffle), and a sausage breakfast burrito w/ salsa on the side. More than enough food for two, took half the burrito home for the next day. Great service from staff, no wait. Steady refills on hot coffee. Looking forward to coming by again for breakfast

Yelp
Good for basic breakfast. Diner vibe. Friendly service. Causal neighborhood vibe. Reasonable prices.

Yelp
I wish I could have checked it on the Yelp before going into the store. Customer service was terrible. The lady was super rude. I asked her just to make me a cappuccino and she thought I just wanted a coffee and showed like a grumpy attitude just handed me the worst coffee ever, and then she gave me wrong size like a size larger without even telling me and then she started charging like OK I made you a large coffee but I was like I asked for the small one, but we don't have a small so you should have let Customer know that we don't have the desired size. What do you want us to do, very poor customer service

Yelp
We were pleasantly surprised by this little cafe! We were looking for a full breakfast not just coffee and donuts. The food was DELICIOUS. Freshly made with the kind of seasonings I would use at home. The service was very friendly as we were greeted as we walked in the door and we were offered recommendations as to what to order. The Piedmont Cafe is a very quaint coffee house with good home made food. Eggs Benedict were served on Canadian bacon on English muffin with a very delicious hollandaise sauce poured on top. The taste of the country potatoes was very good with an herb seasoning (oregano, thyme flavors). The Pancake fanatic breakfast with very fluffy pancakes and crispy yet fluffy potatoes were very good!

Yelp
Feels like home. Simple, delicious diner style breakfast. No frills. What more can you ask for? Service is lovely. I'll definitely be coming back.

Yelp
First time coming here and loved it! It's a quiet place with great food at affordable prices with exceptional service. My food came out within 5-10 mins of ordering and their bakery items all looked great as well. I highly recommend trying the Croissant'wich with egg, cheese, and avocado. We also had the Crab Cake Benedict and it was delicious. I can't wait to go next time to try more of their menu. Speaking of menu, I noticed most of the menu shots on Yelp are all super outdated so I thought I'd post the latest menu, inside, etc. Enjoy and check them out for yourselves!

Yelp
I liked this place. It is a donut shop that is now a breakfast place. Had breakfast here by myself today and food was good. No frills but food is good and at a good price. Lots of choices and food came out super fast. Place was quiet at first but then the place filled up quick with a mix of families and locals. It looked like there were a lot of regulars. Service was good too. I definitely will be back.
google avatar

Yelp
The breakfast wasn't bad at all but the donuts are absolutely horrible. Tasted somewhat stale and something was just off..and that was at 7:20am. Avoid the donuts, food is good though. The service was not the most attentive. Be prepared to wait as they seem to be understaffed both times I went. Setting is average diner vibe.

Yelp
Lived around the block on Glen Ave and moved all across East Bay over the years, but have always returned here regardless of the distance. The quality, value and service of Piedmont Cafe has always been welcoming, fast and very consistent. A little busy as expected on weekends, but the line goes fast. No frills, but good quality breakfast that's well priced, family-run and very friendly. I highly recommend if you're in for a morning grocery run next door or before window shopping on Piedmont Ave.

Yelp
Delicious food and great service. A perfect place for breakfast! My omelette was delicious and the fresh fruit was a great side.

Yelp
Hubs and I were looking to grab breakfast and came across this place walking down Piedmont. I like this place because it gives you that hole in the wall/mom and pop vibe. The servers very friendly and allowed us to sit where we pleased. They wasted no time taking our order and our food came out pretty quick and it was absolutely delicious. I ordered the blueberry pancake combo that came with eggs and sausage ($10.99) and my husband ordered the French toast ($8.75) with a side of sausage ($3.99). I also ordered a mocha with almond milk and he got a snapple. I think all in all, we ended up spending about $35 for two. The service here is good. The food is good. The prices are good. We'll definitely return and I recommend it.

Yelp
Solid place. Coffee is hot and well made. Diner style breakfast and lunch. Egg sandwiches are always good. Quick. Tasty. Nice people.

Yelp
By far my favorite cafe on piedmont. The staff that owns the restaurant is wonderful. I love the morning donut a latte 2 scrambled degas and sausage with of course the best diner hash browns. We try to come in at least 2x a week.

Alejandra C.

Yelp
Almost stopped by the chain coffee shop next door but SO GLAD I went with my heart and put in a small effort to find a small business cafe. Wanted to pick up something quick which became the croissant'wich & wow!!!!!! WORTH IT!!!!!!! Two women ran the cafe with ease. Thank you so much for the good service & delicious food! Probably the best croissant I've had
google avatar

Yelp
This is a great spot when you're out running around town. Had a nice breakfast here with my mom. We shared the largest croissant ever along with an omelette. Both were delicious.

Yelp
The breakfast here is really good. Especially the French toast. I frequent here occasionally and the service is always great.

Yelp
We had a great breakfast experience. Portion sizes were reasonable. Parking is a challenge.

Yelp
I stumbled upon this place as I was walking around the area. It's very cute shop that has a donut counter and then also a menu for the diner area. The first time I went I ordered a two-egg plate with hash browns. I thought the hash browns were so crispy and cooked well. The donut had more air in it than usual donuts. The next time I came I got the same thing and realized that it is a pattern for them to cook requested over-medium eggs as if I asked for over easy (it's pretty much all yolk what they give). I was also disappointed that their $1 up charge for a side of fruit means a really small amount of fruit. Why pay more for fruit if you only get like 6 pieces? My partner ordered the bacon, eggs and hash browns and the bacon was dry while everything else was just fine. The toast is already buttered too and they put wayyyyyy too much butter on it. So I would recommend asking them not to put the butter on for you if you're trying to be healthy-ish. We also didn't appreciate that two tables came in after us but still got their food before us. That took us by surprise and kind of annoyed us. I also wish they would itemize the receipts better. It is unclear what they were charging us for when we got the bill.
google avatar

Taisha Y.

Yelp
It's a diner! They serve diner food! The service is great & they have a bunch of great options. I came here 3x in one week because I didn't feel like making breakfast & lived right around the corner. It doesn't seem to be busy unless I've always gotten lucky with my timing. The food is really good, only place I've been to that knows how to cook an over medium egg perfectly! If you want a simple, to the point breakfast without the extra fluff, this is your spot!
google avatar

Danny M.

Yelp
Friendly and welcoming staff. Great service and excellent food. My partner and I were Gigling and munching on the delicious of the food.
google avatar

Hampton H.

Yelp
Kind and Competent are my two favorite words. I have been treating myself to breakfast once a week for years. They prepare PERFECT BREAKFASTS. NO FRILLS, JUST well-prepared and the lowest prices on Piedmont Ave. They have an extensive menu with other old-time favorites. They make fresh donuts on-site. Grab some on your way out; they stay fresh!
google avatar

Julia C.

Yelp
This place is pretty gross. Ordered via DoorDash and all food tasted old. Was it leftovers? Maybe. My only recommendation would be to stay away from this place. Yuck!
google avatar

Ivana Y.

Yelp
Classic diner fare located along Piedmont Avenue next to Peet's. They have an extensive breakfast menu, aimed to please even the pickiest eaters. I usually get the crab cake benedict or chicken apple omelette. Services can be spotty at times, but for a no frills diner, it's expected. They have donuts and breakfast sandwiches for those looking for a quick bite.
google avatar

Brianna W.

Yelp
Absolutely horrible service. Seriously stood in line for her to bring her in someone else's food over me. Not only did she do that she tells me your order is ready and proceeds to ring someone else up this is the worse service I've received and I come here often. I waited patiently being that it was Thanksgiving for someone else to be helped within 5 minutes of coming in COMPLETE DISGRACE Update Then tried to sell me a COLD ASS BURRITO
google avatar

Christian V.

Yelp
Love their French toast omelettes & apple fritters. Ever since J's closed it's the only good breakfast caffe on Piedmont ave.

S Q.

Yelp
My friend and I have been meeting there every Saturday morning for over a month. Straight forward and great. It is a slower pace, but they also don't rush you out. Their sausage links are amazing. The golden waffle is great! I like getting my hash browns crispy, as recommended by our server. I love the staff and tables the always full, which is a sign of a great business!

George W.

Yelp
Great spooner diner food with fast service. Always willing to accommodate the customer. Nothing fancy but I don't want fancy most of the time. Nice place to bring a friend, laugh, share food, and enjoy!
google avatar

Dan W.

Yelp
Love the breakfast sandwiches and the people who work there are really nice. Definitely recommend going, whether for dine-in or takeout.
google avatar

Dennis K.

Yelp
Mama who run it be terse but mad nice. Breakfast done with no frills and tasty efficiency. Get a croissant -- it's like a soft chewy underdone dough turtle and I love it. Also they be nice to kids. Gotta love that. Big props, auntie. I like how you gets down.
google avatar

Patty Loza M.

Yelp
This place is racist, food wasn't well cooked, they had us waiting almost half an hour for the lady to take our order, meanwhile she was taking everyone else order. Food was nasty and too expensive wasn't worth it.
google avatar

Melia T.

Yelp
I love that they give you white steamed rice option for any breakfast side. I ordered the chicken Apple sausage breakfast with medium cooked fried eggs and asked for cheddar cheese on top. Most restaurants allow for special requests and then just ignore them so I called to make sure. The woman who answered says she charges a dollar for extra cheese however this time she will give it to me as a courtesy. I spend a-lot of money on food. I do not mind paying an extra dollar for cheese on eggs. The option in the menu has to be there for me to be able to pay for extras... right? Anyway food great. Will order again. Recommendation: With the Covid situation many people are ordering online instead of going out, therefore making the menu as thorough and easy to navigate as possible is an efficient way to provide customer with good service.
google avatar

Wendy M.

Yelp
This is our go to spot for a solid diner breakfast. The omelets are amazing, always filled with fresh ingredients. But my favorite has to be the breakfast potatoes! They are crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, and always perfectly seasoned. The customer service is wonderful every single time. We're always greeted with a smile. Give them a try and this might become your favorite too.

Yelp
I wish one day when I retire I can open a small diner like Piedmont Cafe. Old school. Ceiling fans. Black and white tiles. This was my first time in this diner for a brunch. Around 12 tables. Totally unpretentious. This morning there were these patrons occupying the tables, excluding myself, 1 German family of 6, tourist like, 1 retired couple, 2 African American men with a cute little (5 month old) baby girl, 2 Latino construction workers/engineers, 1 single Asian middle aged woman, and 2 homeless men and woman. Reflecting the true diversity of Oakland peacefully sharing a hearty breakfast moment at a local diner run by hardworking (open at 6.30 nearly every day) Vietnamese. And the best part was, delicious homemade crab cake. You could see in the patty discernible crab meat, red bell pepper, onion, and taste a mouthful of chives/herbs with a crispy breaded coat. What's other way to enjoy the morning? (not 5 stars - my table kept sliding on the slippery floor. Annoying)

Claire R.

Yelp
As diners go it's pretty good if you're looking for standard fare. Friendly staff, food comes quickly enough, coffee is good. I ask for the hash browns crispy, so they are more cooked. They have chicken apple sausage, which I appreciate Only have indoor dining, but they keep the doors open so there is some air circulation (at least when I visited in September). Atmosphere is laid back, not too loud, and is a comfortable place to go alone.
google avatar

Nicole C.

Yelp
Gross. Eggs not fresh. Hashbrowns barely cooked. I just left super nasty. I see why I haven't bothered with this place in years. I didn't remember it being this bad. Same staff and now probably the same bad food. No thanks! Bathroom was also tacky and ugh looking.
google avatar

John S.

Yelp
came here for breakfast after I took my kids to their doctors appointment. the place wasn't full which was nice. order some pancakes for my oldest and I share waffles and bacon with my little one. staff was nice and courteous to me. food came out very fast and we were in and out within 40 minutes i think. We used to come here a lot back than but with kids and schedule getting busier we haven't but food and quality is still the same as before.
google avatar

Yelp
My sister liked this small breakfast store so I stopped in this morning. A fairly standard breakfast menu with a Pork Chops and Steak as meat options. Though I was interested, I chose the Corned Beef Hash with two eggs. It's canned hash fried up crispy accompanied by hash browns (?) and buttered toast. The smallish Sunny-side eggs were fired in a pan. A decent Denny's type meal, but I doubt I'd make a special trip back.

David H.

Yelp
I took my Grandma, Dad, and Mom here, and they summarized it perfectly - 'Good, simple food, made well.' My Dad was specifically commenting on his slightly seared Chicken-Apple sausage, fried eggs, and hashbrowns. I've eaten here a dozen times. There are many menu items that are about $10, some even a little less, a rarity for any restaurant these days. I've only ordered their breakfast food, and the portions are huge, and the food is tasty. I'm surprised to see a bunch of negative reviews. I suppose that when they're busy, maybe their service suffers, but it's usually one woman handling the register and waiting all the tables. I've only had speedy and excellent service. A classic diner/donut shop with a slight Asian flavor (ie, there's Teriyaki chicken or Tofu on the menu, and all breakfast dishes can have rice subbed for hashbrowns). 5 stars for good, simple good, well made, and the least expensive Breakfast on or around Piedmont avenue.
google avatar

Jira T.

Yelp
Piedmont Cafe is is a quaint, hole-in-the-wall cafe that can more than hold it's own next to Pete's next door. I ordered the baco n avo omlet with extra cheese and spinach. Delish!

Claudia S.

Yelp
ladies are always nice food is decent very affordable we come at least once a week perfect portions

Yelp
Down to the basics breakfast place. Had the Corn beef hash and eggs!!! Corn beef & hash browns were crispy nice on the outside and soft in the middle like I like it! English muffins even came out hot and buttered! Nothing fancy but good for the price. Diner style coffee had some flavor to it! Trust me some places taste like the water they rinsed the coffee pot with. I would definitely come back!
google avatar

Greg S.

Yelp
I don't understand why all the high ratings here. The space is old and not well cleaned. The menu super basic, and tired. The service by the Asian woman working this morning was less than welcoming, and almost dismissive. Our meals were purely Sysco or Costco food... I don't get it. You can get better food, and service elsewhere for the same price as they charge here.
google avatar

Daniel H.

Yelp
Honestly, I would probably usually give a four star review, but after literally not getting any service from the wait staff down the block at Chow for a very similar breakfast menu, I'm giving the extra star out of spite...hahaha. That being said, my wife and I were seated promptly, given menus, and served water within three or five minutes. I usually don't pay for breakfast, haven't done so in probably 20 years, since I can make most items at home. But I'll echo what people have mentioned about the crab eggs Benedict. I was pretty happy to pay the $11 for that and included large side of hash. My wife had the french toast. Honestly, never had it before at other restaurants so I don't know how to compare it, but in all honesty it's not something I'd order if i went back. Are you suppose to eat it with syrup or something, i honestly don't know. Its not really a trendy spot, so be sure to check out the interior photos to see it's right for your occasion/expectations.

Yelp
Piedmont Cafe has a neighborhood diner feel. Looks like a lot of regulars from the interaction that the waitress had with the customers coming in. I've had the Corned Beef Hash with Eggs that has some good reviews and everything was well executed with the hash nicely griddled, crispy hash browns and perfectly sunny side up eggs (https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/piedmont-cafe-and-bakery-oakland?select=_opqzxQv9nwlxmuy1jxvEA). The hash was pretty average with a fine dice (https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/piedmont-cafe-and-bakery-oakland?select=Vc95PNG7-G7-NOLiubzSxw&userid=DsHsuhUvyyW_75zFcJxkKw) I prefer it chunkier. Omelette with cheese has a funky presentation with a slice of cheese placed on top of the cooked omelette (https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/piedmont-cafe-and-bakery-oakland?select=STgRSUFqDwJeDUJOQwrIQg&userid=DsHsuhUvyyW_75zFcJxkKw). Again, nice crispy hash browns (https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/piedmont-cafe-and-bakery-oakland?select=lIne9saTV6dOdWmluSnAlA&userid=DsHsuhUvyyW_75zFcJxkKw) Service has been a bit slow as it's often been a one person operation when I've stopped by. Decent spot for inexpensive diner fare in unpretentious environs, if you're not in a huge rush.

Yelp
Me: First timer Just arrived at 8 40 am on a fabulous Friday. It is pretty quiet at the moment. We were told to sit where you like. It's very cozy and warm inside of here. The menu covers every breakfast combination you could imagine. There were like 4 pages of breakfast items. But it wasn't overwhelming. I actually like all the options of food. You could eat here everyday for months and order something different every time. I ordered a coffee. The coffee is good. I also ordered the Pacific Scramble which includes shrimp. Im waiting on that now so I'll shall soon see if that's to my liking. Guess what? It's so to my liking The people here are hella cool. I will be coming back very frequently.
