My wife and I are locals in the San Diego area. We were getting married, and decided to book a staycation at Pier South in Imperial Beach the weekend before our wedding. We had hoped for a relaxing getaway to share some time together before our wedding day. Spending $1500 is a big deal for our household, but after looking at the Pier South website and trusting the Marriott brand, we decided it was worth it to splurge as a pre-honeymoon trip before our big day.
I will be frank: the hotel was a terrible disappointment.
The website shows a beautifully appointed resort-style facility. Under the Amenities tab, it is described as having "an intimate resort vibe"
Most of the amenities listed on the hotel website are not available. Those that are available are in terrible condition, have limited hours wholly different from those posted on the website, or haven't existed in years (e.g. the onsite outdoor yoga classes). While I am fully aware of the impact of COVID, the problems we encountered are not related to the pandemic/health concerns, evidence little to no upkeep of rooms or supplies, a grossly overpriced venue, and no attempt to match the hotel product advertised on the website. The degree of misrepresentation is so severe, it qualifies as false or deceptive advertising.
We opted for the corner executive suite, expecting a lovely room. The carpet was filthy, and the floors were so dirty my bare feet were brown with dirt within minutes. The air conditioner vent was so loud we had to turn it off because we couldn't sleep. Most of the window cranks were broken such that we could not open the windows.
The door latch was not secure, having clearly been broken off and screwed back into the same door frame multiple times. The "lighted mirror" was missing lights, the long mirror was rusted, and the wheels on the bathroom cart were rusted and broken.
None of the amenities shown in the photo of the bar area were in the room (water, soda, TeaJava; see photo). When we went down to the onsite convenience store, the shelves and refrigerators were almost empty. There weren't even simple sanitary or other guest supplies available. The website lists slippers in the rooms, which did not exist. The "plush" robes were only available on request, and looked nothing like the photos on the site; the fabric was full of holes, rough to the touch and worn through.
The onsite restaurant, SEA180, is lovely. But nowhere on the website does it specify that breakfast is take-out only during the week. While the website lists room service as an amenity, there is no room service available of any kind.
The website shows a row of lovely chaise lounges right on the beach. Those chairs do not exist. What is actually available is a pile of first-come, first-serve broken, old, sandy beach chairs We intentionally left our beach gear at home because we didn't think we would need it. We were wrong.
Ultimately, we were wrong about choosing Pier South at all. We chose a "resort" because we had hoped to stay on the premises for everything we needed. We were prepared to spend money at the store for supplies. We ended up shopping at a local bodega for amenities as simple as bottled water, because there were none onsite. There were only two luggage carts in the whole hotel, so we ended up carrying our own bags up and down stairs and elevators.
One of the worst parts of the weekend may have been the expressions on the faces of the staff. They are so obviously overwhelmed and overworked. When I checked out, the person helping me asked me how my stay was. I told her the truth: the people who work here are lovely. They are clearly trying to do their best. But the hotel itself is a disaster. I told her I had a feeling it was not the first time she'd heard that, and she said, "No. It's not."
I have lost faith in the Marriott brand after this experience. I have sent a total of 7 emails, across 5 different email addresses and contact points, over the course of a month trying to address my concerns, get a refund...any level of customer service. Each time I write, I am told someone will be in touch with me. No one has reached out and there has been no resolution. I'm writing this review to hopefully prevent someone else from having the same awful experience. Do not stay at this hotel.
