9 Montreal Restaurants and Bars With Winter ‘Terrasses’ | Eater Montreal

"The modern, woodsy vibe continues onto the covered terrace at this NDG hangout known for a bustling breakfast and lunch scene. Crowds can continue to enjoy their shakshuka, salads, and sandwiches as the weather gets colder thanks to the space heaters, the renowned coffee, and maybe a cocktail or two." - Erinn Blicher

Google
Discovered this vibrant place during our recent short trip to Montreal and our craving for some good European breakfast and man this thing blew our expectations!!! Starting from the service and courtesy, really top notch. We were with 3 kids and we felt welcomed. The ambiance and decor are nice. Really adds a positive vibe to this place. We decided to go with their shakshuka, pancakes, and croissants along side their coffees. Nothing disappointed us; infact tasted very good. Not bad on the pocket as well. 10/10.

Google
Great place to go on a date. Great vibe to the place. I had a cortado and it was really good. Not the best place for croissants but they have plenty of options for coffee and drinks. The interiors of the place are stunning. Would definitely recommend.

Adam Adam

Google
Waited 30 minutes for a tiny $20 tuna sandwich with no update from staff until I asked. No offer of a seat or something else on the menu. They said the toaster was broken, but no one offered an alternative. First time here, and definitely the last.

Google
FANTASTIC food! For our first time in Montreal, this was a really great place to visit for breakfast and lunch. The shakshuka I got was extremely good. Our waiter Felipe was really accommodating, too. Thank you!

Google
So delicious! The only complaint is the portion of the chicken on the Caesar salad and not enough pita bread for the falafel; especially for the price thats the only reason I withheld from giving 5stars. However it was all very delicious.

Theresa Nguyen

Google
Not the best Pigeon branch I have tried. They ran out of grilled chicken and mentioned it would have been a 25-30 mins wait, which was excessive. We’ve settled for the chicken schnitzel instead. Service… not much to say about it. When we came in, the waitress did not take the time to acknowledge us and was speaking to her colleague about non-work-related stuff. No utensils were given (no staff realized and we had to ask).

Google
This place had super mixed reviews so I was very hesitant to try it. In my experience the food was good. I enjoyed the ambience as well. The service on the day I was there was honestly too fast because they had a party coming in and were rushing people out. But they did warn me of that beforehand so I definitely can't blame them for that! I would recommend giving it a try and forming your own opinion.

Google
I really enjoyed the ambiance here. I came for lunch and it was bright and cheerful. I started with a latte and the presentation was lovely. Then for lunch I ordered the shakshuka…which is soft cooked eggs in a middle eastern style tomato sauce which was delicious. My friend had a simple omelette.

Yelp
My kid and I had a delightful lunch here! This lovely restaurant is on the site of the much loved, much missed St. Viateur bagel cafe/restaurant (RIP). I loved the outdoor patio area (which, of course, was not open, being the dead of winter and all lol)! This patio area is large and framed by a wooden canopy. I can imagine it being a great seating area come summer. My kid and I LOVED the interior of this restaurant! It was gorgeous, reminiscent of a solarium, with SO much natural light (the whole wall facing the street is floor-to-ceiling windows. In fact, I think these windows open up to the patio area when the weather is nice). In the middle of the large space are some artificial lemon trees strung with white lights. There are panels of wallpaper by the entryway depicting garden greens with bright yellow lemons. The effect of it all is airy, and with the rattan-backed dining chairs, it really feels like one is dining in a lovely garden. A bougie garden. We were seated right away. The menu was impressive, with many choices for sandwiches and salads (most were traditional dishes, but all seemed to have some sort of twist. We liked that!). I LOVED the nod to traditional Jewish foods (this used to be the St. Viateur cafe, after all!), with some classic bagel plates, and matzo ball soup and potato latkes being offered. I also LOVED the homage to Larry David and Richard Thomas and more, naming various deli sandwiches after these famous folks. They also had a healthy wine and cocktail selection (LOVE that!), and wonderful looking desserts. All in all, super menu. You'd be hard-pressed not to find something you like here. Our order was taken right away. Nice! We ordered the Pigeon Salad and a turkey wrap to share. (The wraps come with your choice of dipping sauce. We opted for a Russian dressing sauce). And the food came promptly, too, and it was all delicious. The salad was so fresh, with wonderful goat cheese crumbles, chopped dates, crisp greens, and a flavorful champagne vinaigrette on the side. (The dressing was so good, I tried to duplicate it the following day. Really really good). The wrap was also wonderful, with a generous helping of moist turkey wrapped with lettuce in a warm tortilla. It totally did not need the dipping sauce (although, hey, we didn't complain that it was there! The wrap was moist and flavorful enough to stand on its own). My kid had an iced latte and said it was great. Our meal was super. The only reason why I am not giving this restaurant 5 stars is because it took a LONG LONG time for us to get our bill to pay, once we were done dining. We actually thought they had forgotten about us. I couldn't catch our server's eye (and he didn't come to our area at all for over half an hour, actually). I saw our server chatting it up with other servers in a far corner of the restaurant. I kept watching the clock on my phone, worried that our parking meter was going to run out, and I finally asked a busboy who was clearing an adjacent table to please have our server bring us the bill. It was another 5-10 minutes until the owner came with the bill (I think it was the owner. It was a woman who apologized for the delay, saying how young her staff was there, and that she would talk to them about the service delays). (I wouldn't even mention all this but it took us between 30-40 minutes after we finished eating before we got the bill so, yeah, it really was a long time). Anyhow, this was the only glitch to our meal, and it wasn't a huge problem. We had a delightful meal, and for sure, I'll be back. I even raved about this place to my parents, and they are looking forward to visiting, too.

Yelp
Located in nin-busy area away from downtown, this place has nice ambience and decor - actual trees inside the cafe. They serve coffee, brunch and cocktails as well. We had latte and iced coffee with bagels for breakfast. Coffee was a bit light for our taste but overall good experience.

Yelp
Pretty brunch place to go with friends! Tried the benedictine, meditaranean style, with a cappucino. Was filling and also tasted the blueberry buttermilk pancake which was very tasty!

Yelp
We got seated a few minutes after waiting at the front as the only waitress there was also the hostess, cleaning tables, and delivering the food to appropriate tables. The circumstances of being understaffed became more prevalent as it got busier the longer we were there. We ordered their Smoked salmon avocado toast, Shoey's Breakfast Bagel, Sabich Benedict, and a side of breakfast potatoes as well as a latte which my friend enjoyed. Everything came out in under 10 minutes after ordering which was surprising given the lack of man power on the floor. Everyone loved their meals and I was so satisfied with having tried sabich for the first time. It was refreshing and flavorful with their beautifully poached eggs and lemon hollandaise sauce over the top. Breakfast potatoes were also prepared well with a sprinkle of Cajun powder and some parsley. Overall, we had a wonderful experience and felt awful for the waitress frantically running around. It got better as we left since two more staff members started their shifts but she still profusely apologized even so. I loved the ambiance as it was open and lively. I would love to come again the next time I'm in the area.

Yelp
Vibes were absolutely stunning! I loved this place, atmosphere 10/10 and food was great! Was not a fan of vanilla latte, but I am picky about my coffee, vanilla syrup was not it.

Yelp
This is a trendy restaurant on the equally trendy Monkland Avenue. I ordered the spritzvah cocktail which was delicious. The bubby's matzah ball soup was equally amazing - with home made broth! The shakshuka was good. My kids had the schnitzel sandwich which was excellent; comes with a side salad. There are jokes on plates on the way in, the service is very friendly! The atmosphere is very cool and the bathrooms smell like flowers! What more can you want?!?

Yelp
Really good coffee, but slow service and TERRIBLE pastries. I took some friends there and was genuinely embarrassed by how bad the scones were. One friend said it was "the worst scone she'd ever had". Dry and flavourless. None of us had more than two bites. Coffee slaps. Food is okay but pricey. Nice ambiance and pretty place.

Yelp
A very beautiful place. We went for brunch. The service is really super slow; sometimes we felt the servers were wandering around lost in their bubbles. I had to signal to get their attention every time either to get the menu, or where is my latte since my food have arrived and for the bill. Nevertheless, the dishes were extremely tasty; I had shakshouka with potatoes latkes and a latte. I also found the price was way too high, I guess due to the inflation. At least my company was amazing, so I wasn't annoyed by the long wait for the service.

Lyn N.

Yelp
The food itself is good, IF you can get someone to serve you any. I have on multiple occasions entered the restaurant, waited to be helped, tried to ASK for someone to take my order (for take out) and they actively ignored me. The first time, after about half an hour of this nonsense, I shrugged and left. Figured it was a one off, even though there were four staff just, standing around. Right in front of me. The second time, I waited far less long than that. I can think of no reason why they would be targeting me specifically (having only been in and ordered take out twice before then), and so I have to assume that the service just isn't very good. Again, nothing against the food (though their pastries are a bit, meh, and in a very broken glass case), just the way I've been treated like I'm not even there is genuinely unfortunate.

Yelp
The first Chicken Parmesan had a small fly crawling on the food. The chicken on the second order was so tough it was not edible. My wife had the chicken schnitzel sandwich and it was okay but quite dry. The service and ambience were fine but the food was terribly disappointing. This is the first time I have given a negative review anywhere. Hopefully, this is not a typical experience.

Yelp
Nice place. We sat outside. They have a roof to block some sun. Very nice atmosphere. Waiters English and French. The food was delicious and big. Their iced coffee was good. I would definitely come back.

Yelp
Not a huge lunch selection, but what we had was very good. The service was very good too. If it wasn't so noisy, I would gladly return. The noise is unbearable. My friend left with a headache, and I just couldn't hear half of what she said. There must be something that can be done to decrease the noise level such as covering up the brick wall and cement floors. I will not return until or unless something is done to reduce the noise.

Yelp
On an recent Uber Eats order, we sampled the Pigeon salad, the burger, and the Israeli fried chicken with mixed results. The salad was quite good with plenty of tasty ingredients including avocado. Nevertheless, it could have been a tad larger for the 16$ (just add a bit more lettuce to fill it out). The burger was juicy and large, served on a challah roll. While many people wouldn't probably enjoy random thick slices of red onion, it was just my speed. The waffle fries were also very good. The issue with the Israeli fried chicken is that there was nothing crispy about it. It could be the delivery effect, but beyond that, the coating was very thin. The dish is basically breaded boneless chicken thighs served with some middle eastern watery dips. I improved on the dips by using some of my own hot sauce and honey. I wouldn't put this version on any lists of best fried chicken. I will say that the restaurant was very nice in sending the chicken over as a replacement for the hot dogs in blankets that we had ordered. They charged me the lower price of the hot dogs given they were out of stock. For the 3 chicken thighs we did get, I'm glad I didn't pay the regular 24$ price tag which would have been unjustified. You can tell that there is some effort going on here to put some thought and love into the food. One has to remember that when ordering in, the vibe of the restaurant, and the experience of being served something fresh out of the kitchen is completely missing thereby exposing and highlighting weaknesses in the food. I would gladly try some other menu items in person in the future.

Yelp
I was really looking forward to visiting this new cafe, as the little coffee shop with the same name in downtown is excellent. I went on a sunny Sunday afternoon, lucky me it was half-empty. When I arrived I was unsure whether I should stand and wait to be seated or get inside to order and sit afterwards. The waiters were passing by and never paid attention to me standing at the door.... after 5 minutes I decided to get inside. Inside, the waiters were still doing their thing when a waitress finally asked me if I wanted to order and invited me to take a seat. 10 minutes later, the waiters kept on passing by without paying attention to my table .... Another 10 minutes passed, same: I just want to add that the restaurant was far from being full but I told myself that since they recently opened the slowness of the beginnings was normal. Then a couple arrived at a table next to mine. They were barely seated that a waitress was already taking their order, which surprised me since I had been waiting for a while and no one cared to ask what I wanted to eat... As I was getting ready to leave, someone finally came to take my order. I ordered a mango smoothie and the pigeon salad. The salad arrived quite quickly, it was OK but nothing out of the ordinary, the bread was also too chewy for my taste. Then I finished my food and there was still no smoothie... The smoothie finally arrived but I would have appreciated drinking it while eating my salad. I will have to go back because my experience has not been the best, but this place is full of potential and a great place to chill with friends.

Yelp
One of my favorite coffee shops opened a new location on Monkland. This location used to be the iconic St-Viateur & happy time see it has been replaced by this new cafe! Extremely friendly staff, beautifully designed interior with a gorgeous terrace. I only picked up a latte to go but they also serve breakfast and lunch which looks quite interesting. To be honest, the latte was pretty good, not at par with their downtown location. I have provided them with my feedback & will give them the benefit of the doubt to ensure consistency, which is key! I would be curious to try their breakfast or lunch at some point. Definitely check them out when you're on Monkland :-)

Yelp
terrible service. we waited over an hour and changed the order to go. 15 minutes later, they brought two bags out. we got to the hotel and one order was missing. just an awful experience.

Yelp
Beautiful Father's Day and Grand Prix day! We chose to stay away from the hustle and bustle and ended up at this place. Decor is homely and the staff friendly. The menus is short and sweet so we chose to have the Shakshouka (Poached Eggs in Spicy Tomato Sauce) and i also ordered a side of potato latkes. This dish was full of different flavours and topped with pomegranate. I would definitely return. Oh the company was pleasant as well. Lol
google avatar

Elmer P.

Yelp
Doesn't look much when you walk by but I was impress with the interior decor, we were greeted by a male hostess and it was a typical check in process ( seated right away ) while waiting for our server I wasn't impress with the staff around dropping knife and fork to our table without greeting not even offer a glass water until we ask for it. The food was ok but I did not taste anything special on the avo smoke salmon, but I need to tell you that the sandwiches with the potatoes I could definitely feel flavor all over the bread ( the bread was the best part ) the potatoes as no taste ( sorry ) I would love to come back and try something else. 5 for the ambiance but the food was pretty normal.

Yelp
This new restaurant on Monkland is always busy and lively so we decided to give it a try. They offer seating inside as well as their shaded patio and some tables completely in the sun. We went on a Friday for lunch and no reservation was needed. Their menu is quite extensive, from pasta to seafood, breakfast food to sandwiches you're pretty much covered. Their cocktail menu wasn't very large but the waitress let us know that they would make any classic cocktail for us as well. I ordered the chicken schnitzel sandwich with fries and the cocktail with aperol. The sandwich was quite good and the challah bread was a nice touch. The cocktail was alright but nothing that stood out. Unfortunately the fries tasted reheated and not homemade but they were still good. Overall I would definitely return for the food and the nice ambiance but not for their cocktails, I would really give it a 3.5 out of 5.

Yelp
What a cozy atmosphere! La verdure un peu partout. Des gens heureux de se retrouver. I liked the warmth of this " worst " café! Le café est délicieux, choix de laits variés! And the pancakes! And the grilled cheese! Et la salade! Et les frites gaufrées! I need to go back to try more stuff! Enjoy!
google avatar

Jordan C.

Yelp
It's "ok". I've been twice in a week, once for breakfast and once for dinner. Breakfast was simple eggs and bacon but they brought me the wrong plate which I didn't notice but it wasn't worth swapping out at that point. The potatoes were clearly from a frozen bag. Generous portion though not cheap. Service was mediocre but not bad. Dinner was a great choice because they could accommodate a large group but my "ribs" was literally a single rib for $31 plus potatoes and corn. The mashed potatoes were excellent. Service was good. Overall more of a place to go with friends for lunch or brunch than a seriously good meal. Ups and downs. Would likely go back if invited but wouldn't go out of my way to go.
google avatar

Patricia C.

Yelp
Fun and lively new spot on Monkland serving brunch and dinner! The decor is gorgeous and their terrasse is cozy, airy and beautiful. Cocktail menu wasn't huge but they're flexible to adjust to your tastes and can make most any classic cocktails as well. I had the grilled smoked meat sandwich with fries and it was really tasty, generous size and with the filling and fries were perfectly cooked. Service was friendly and helpful as well. I'll definitely be coming back for brunch !
google avatar

Eliana P.

Yelp
Great ambiance and coffee. And the food is just amazing. Highly recommend you try a brunch or quick lunch at this place.
google avatar

Yelp
It was during Covid so we did takeout and I never saw the inside of the place but it's in the trendy part of Monkland Village. We all ate well. Portions were big and thus justified the prices. We had Schnitzel Sandwich on Challah Roll, Chocolate Chip pancankes, and Tuna Melt on Panini. Chocolate chip pancakes and the waffle fries that came with the sandwiches were wicked good. Very fresh ingredients and plentiful. We are stuffed. Would definitely go back
google avatar

Tarushka S.

Yelp
Watch where you sit on the patio because there's a big tree with birds hanging over it and we got pooped on! Literally lives up to it's name! Also, despite telling the staff we were ready to order, the waitress never came to take our order, so we left. We waited at least half an hour.

Earl W.

Yelp
The food was great, but the room is unbearably loud. Great if you're deaf or eating outside ;-( I had the chicken soup and schnitzel sandwich. The soup was almost as good as my grandmothers... and the schnitzel was on a nice soft bun that made it easy to eat. The room on the other hand was incredibly loud. I would not go back and eat inside. It's not pleasant when you are unable to carry on a conversation without shouting, adding to the overall noise level.

Yelp
What a gem of a place! It really just reminds me of being right back in LA with the cool, effortlessly hipster vibe, and food that holds up to its chicness. We've been a couple of times and it's been a wonderful thing to have brunch even during these difficult times. It's given us a chance to discover more parks in the area which is an added bonus. Service has always been relatively fast and attentive. It's not a homey place but people are friendly. Both times we went I got the pancakes, so I got blueberry and chocolate. Blueberry was good! Kind of standard, but fluffy in all the right ways, and the syrup is light and perfect. Where I feel they really shine is their chocolate pancakes with their slightly charred chocolate chips that give it that smokey, gooey, slightly bitter taste that makes it so special. It was amazing and now I want some. My husband got the breakfast sandwich and another time the shoey (breakfast bagel?). Both times it was extremely well made, everything that needed to be crispy was still crispy and warm. I LOVE how they make their bacon; thick and meaty, with a bit of char. They add some herbs and spices to their dishes and that extra touch really makes them again stand out. The one thing we both thought was kinda meh were the fingerling potatoes. They were well seasoned, well cooked, but yea, potatoes. It would have been lovely to see some of those yummy spices put on these potatoes in a hash or if they were cut up a bit smaller it would have also been I think less heavy. Overall, pigeon is great at what they do and they're one of the places that get my heart racing when I think of going. So, since yelp doesn't do decimals, just know for me pigeon sits at a scrumptious 4.75.

Scott Y.

Yelp
Fire fire fire - breakfast sandwich, blueberry pancakes, bacon - YOU're WELCOME. Just go, you will love it.

Marie V.

Yelp
Staff was pleasant but poor attention to customers needs. Soup was not hot and too salty! Grilled cheese was yummy, fries too but waited forever for ketchup. Staff seemed to be uninterested in their work. Might go back just for the waffle fries.

D F.

Yelp
I ordered the 1 halloumi & Lebneh shakshuka and 1 grilled veggie & halloumi sandwich to share with a friend. It was really good. Also got the green smoothie. I would get the same thing again.
google avatar

Suzanne C.

Yelp
Stopped by for lunch with my husband because they had one of my fav dishes on the menu - Shakshuka! There seems to be a lineup whenever I pass by, so I trusted it must be good. We waited for a reasonably short while and were seated at a lovely outdoor table shaded by the pergola. While they were quite busy, service was attentive and courteous. We know they, like most restos, were short staffed but we didn't experience any problems. The Shaksukas did not disappoint - mine was the classic, my husband's with Merguez. The sauce was delicious and I loved the sprinkle of pomegranite. The eggs were perfectly creamy but my husband's were slightly overdone. The Merguez tasted like it was house made. The dish is served with toasted hallah and you'll want to use that to sop up all that sauce. I asked that my Cortado be delivered with my meal and it arrived seconds before. Well done!

Yelp
Went this Friday for my birthday, was a great evening. There was a line up at the door, but spoke to the hostess and mentioned the reservation, she seated us immediately. The vibe inside was perfect for me. lots of plants, comfortable seating, and lighting was comfortable. Music was chill, got a little louder as the night went on, but by the time I noticed it was 10pm, and i guess that's to be expected. I could still hear everyone at my table regardless. All around good vibe though. I ate the halloumi and labneh shakshuka. I had never heard of shakshuka before, but once i got it, was more than happy. Grilled halloumi cheese in tomato sauce, served in a cast iron skillet with a mix of veggies and eggs. I think i remember there being some mint and pine nuts thrown in as well. A great vegetarian option, except I'm not a vegetarian, so added grilled chicken. Seems like I was the first to ask this server for that, he had to go check, but came back with a yes. A few extra $ for the grilled chicken breast add on, but I was just glad I was able to add it on. I really wanted to try that dish. Had a carrot caramel cheesecake for dessert. Candle and song and all that jazz. Been a long time since I let my friends do that, but it was cool though. no waiters banging on pots and pans and standing on tables and being ridiculous about it. We hung out for another couple of hours, glasses were still being filled after we paid, and was not rushed out. Thats almost a deal breaker on my end whether I go to a place again. How I'm treated after the bill has been settled. So, again, Thanks Pigeon staff. It was a great night, I'll be back!!

Yelp
Would give this place 10 stars if I could! It's rare a cafe's food is as good as it's coffee. Ambiance, food, drink (alcoholic + coffee) are all 10/10!! Their take on an aperol spritz is divine. oh and the service! ... top notch! (hint: ask for Sean)

Daniel G.

Yelp
Over priced! $25 for some chicken and frozen fries! $18 for a small schnitzel in a huge bun! Taste was ok, but no value for the money spent and nothing original. There are many restaurants on Monkland that deliver much better value and food - YE Old Orchard, Taverne, Local 75....

Yelp
Carrot cake cookie is in contention for the best cookie ever. Looking forward to returning for meals!
