The 20 Best Restaurants in Hobart, Australia | Eater

"You’ll notice this bakery’s offerings listed on menus at several cafes and restaurants around town, which is always a good sign, but there’s nothing quite like going straight to the source. Set in the old Mercury newspaper building, Pigeon Whole is small but welcoming. A selection of classic pastries and sandwiches are displayed on the counter, sourdough loaves rest on wooden shelves nearby, and large windows behind the counter let you peek at the hardworking bakers. Grab a coffee and a wild fennel palmier, sit in the corner, and watch passersby on Argyle Street. [$]" - Audrey Bourget

This was the first place I checked when I arrived in Tassy, as it was voted the best cafe in the city. The staff were friendly and welcoming, and the baked goods looked incredibly tempting. I opted for the mozzarella bagel, which had a delicious filling, but the bagel itself was too dry for my taste. The coffee was strong but average.

We had a quick breakfast at this popular bakery in central Hobart and ordered a Piccolo drink, a Morning Bun and a Doughnut with Strawberry jam filling. The beverage was good, while the bun and doughnut were top notch. The shop space is small with limited seats available to consume your order on site. Customer service is excellent, even though the shop was busy in the morning. The allowed us to change our mind and consumed our order on site (rather than take-away) when there were seats available. You can pay with all type of credit cards with no payment surcharge, another excellent customer service point 💯💖.

I noticed reviews in Australia tend to be inflated (not sure if it's a lack of discernment of what is actually good food) so I was wary of the high praise but this is good!! I got the savoury scroll, croissant and an iced white. The savoury scroll was delicious, and the croissant stayed crunchy an hour later. They served the ice drink with a huge ice block which helped the coffee retain its taste without being too diluted quickly. Definitely visit here if you are in the city area. The other bakes looked good too, like the sandwich and bagels. I declare this worthy of its rating.

Google
The most famous bakery in Hobart! I was there around 1pm and everything looked sold out. The salami ficeelle was a bit dry… I will come early next time.

Google
Tried a couple of bakeries in Hobart on my visit to find the best almond croissant, and must say that Pigeon Whole Bakers takes the crown! The almond flavour was fragrant with a healthy spread of frangipane. The croissant also had a nice rise and was buttery and caramelised. I would have liked the croissant to have been slightly less dense (more layers) but not too much more to fault!

Google
Hobart’s best croissants, and the coffee is excellent. Although seating is limited, I’m still happy to wait and quietly sit down to enjoy a breakfast. Well worth a visit.

Stopped by Pigeon Whole and grabbed the morning bun, and it was incredible. Super flaky and chewy at the same time, really buttery, and the spices were spot on without being too much. An absolute treat. Definitely recommend stopping by if you’re in Hobart.

Enjoyed the chai, the savoury scroll, the morning bun which was deliciously caramelised but not too much. Textures are on point 😍 and level of sweetness is just right. Also love the cute setup they have the "pigeon hole" to pick up your coffee outside 😁

Yelp
Have been visited Pigeon Whole at least twice during our January visits to Hobart at since 2017. It has always been an awesome experience. On this visit we picked two baguette sandwiches. A Goat Cheese with grilled onions and greens and. mortadella ham with Swiss, and greens with an aioli sauce. Both were huge and tasty. Big enough for lunch and dinner. We also picked up a package of spiced ginger cookies that were out of this world. A nice bit of coarse salt on each. Service was great and there was a huge line that went quickly. Price for two sandwiches and 5 large cookies a little over 30$ AUDs. A bargain. Highly recommend.

Yelp
This place has one of the best breakfast sandwiches I've had in a minute. Simple fresh perfect portion. Great options after ordering you do have to wait a bit depending on how busy it is to get your coffee and food. If you're in a rush, this might not be the best place. However, after a night of hitting the town, this was perfect for me. I also love how you can see into the bakery section and you will definitely smell the bakery before you reach it.

Yelp
Our Airbnb host mentioned that she got her sourdough from here, and I remember it being mentioned on a food blog for Tasmania, so we made the drive in hopes of some coffee and baked goods on a chilly morning. Thought they'd have some hot coffee options, but they only had bottled cold brews and a smaller selection of pastries than I imagined a bakery would have. They seem to be more of a bread shop, with shelves of different breads lining the wall behind the cashier and display case. My boyfriend went with a soy cold brew and an almond croissant. We both agreed they were both excellent, although the almond paste in the croissant was a lot darker than ones I've had before and had a bit of a different taste/texture to it. A very clean, modern shop with outdoor lighting and rather limited seats. You won't regret checking it out.

Yelp
Nice bakery and good selection of bread products. However the bakery isn't keen to cater to dietary requirements. I'm on a low fodmap and dairy free diet but they weren't keen to make any sandwiches or bagel without cheese or pickled veggies. I asked if they can just toast a plain bagel up but they don't have a toaster. I don't think I could come back here again.

Yelp
The Pigeon has flown into town and Hobart is all the better for it! Jay and co are rocking inside the gorgeous old Mercury building on Argyle street, open seven whole days a week with more incredible baked goods than you can poke a stick at. Get thee to Pigeon Whole Bakers, henceforth.

Yelp
This tiny hole in the wall - blink and you miss it - was surprisingly open on a Sunday so we had to stop by. They have a small range of awesome offerings, from danish pastries to loaves of bread all baked out back - you literally look into the bakery. It's a little bit expensive, but it's also good quality. Head on by and shout yourself to some good quality baking.

Yelp
Cute shop fit out and fantastic pastries and cakes. I've had the almond croissant, Eccles cake and sour dough donut (with dulce de leche flavoured filling). They were all delicious. There is a small area to eat in but it's more of a takeaway set up. Goods are pricey but in my opinion, worth it. Wish I had one in my home town!
