Remembering the Saddest Restaurant Closures Across the Carolinas for 2021 - Eater Carolinas

"The closure is only temporary, but the Pik-N-Pig in Carthage burning down over Memorial Day weekend stung, not only because of all the time and work that went into it, but because Carthage is a small town, so the whole community felt the loss." - Eater Staff

Great BBQ joint. We were flying from FL to Niagara Falls, and heard about this place being a great midway lunch spot. Tight runway makes for a fun approach. We arrived 10 minutes before they opened (a Saturday) and there was a line out the door already. Service was fast, food was warm (and wonderful), and staff was friendly. We got brisket and pulled pork, brisket was the winner here to me, and some great southern sweet tea. 10/10 would visit on another flight by.

Google
Excellent service and food!! The only reason I gave 4 stars on atmosphere is because it was pretty warm inside the restaurant. Jarod provided Excellent service!! We'll be back!! Pretty cool being able to watch planes take off and land right there!! Cool WW1 and WW2 history displays too!! Highly recommended!!

Arrived about 1:30 today for a late lunch to find a 20 minute wait. Enjoyed watching small aircraft come and go while imbibing in an ice cold beer during our wait ~ relaxing and enjoyable. Seated for lunch in a timely fashion. Our table ordered the shareable platter, a pulled pork sandwich and the BBQ brisket plate. Food was plentiful, brisket was the decided "winner" as far as we were concerned. Service was prompt and friendly. Price was fair for quantity and quality. I would recommend a visit for a delicious meal in a unique and entertaining environment.

Google
No complaints at all. Awesome atmosphere, service was great and bbq came out on point. Perfect spot for Sunday lunch or a quick stop on the bike. Highly recommended. Would come back just for the hush puppies alone 👌

Daniel Weiner

Google
Food, service and atmosphere were all great. We had lunch on a Thursday and had no wait, but people were waiting when we left. We sat outside and were able to see several small planes take off and land. They have table service and you can eat inside or in an outside covered area. The brisket and 'nana pudding were delicious. The small museum is currently closed and is being relocated.

Google
Wonderful experience going for my husband's birthday. Got the sampler for lunch and it was perfect for us + our German Shepherd who thoroughly enjoyed many hush puppies and lots of attention from the nice server. Loved the outdoor seating to watch planes land. Highly recommend.

Google
Great place to get some delicious BBQ! They open at 11:00 on Saturday and when we arrived at 11:30 it was already packed with cars and motorcycles (I was also on a bike with some friends). But they sat us right away on the outside at our request so we could enjoy watching a couple of aircraft take off and land. Heaters overhead felt so great after a cool ride in. The service was outstanding, food came out so fast and was delicious. Also, was fun seeing so many kids excited to check out the airplanes. Highly recommend!

Google
The place is very casual, the service is pretty good and they always make sure your glass is full, but the food was very bad and expensive, the sweet potato mash was OVERLY sweet. And the vegetables in general were very bad, the pork and chicken were ok, but everything was super greasy. The menu is not extensive and some things are almost the same. It's okay to eat somewhere a little "different" but I don't recommend it, sorry :(

Yelp
Pik and pig is an awesome place with phenomenal food, everything we had was delicious! My husband had the pork bbq with potato salad and coleslaw (I'm not kidding when I say I have never had better potato salad or coleslaw, and I am picky) my son and I shared the combination plate smoked chicken and pork chop with Mac and cheese, French fries and a side of fried okra. The pork chop was so flavorful and juicy as was the chicken, and the side were perfect. We shared the banana pudding and again amazing!!!!! The service was wonderful and all the staff is so friendly, and the ambiance in side and out is laid back and fun. The restaurant is on a small airfield, they have a plane from ww2 on display along with some interesting plaques. We stayed to watch someone take off after filling their belly with some delicious food. It's a nice place with friendly people and the food is amazing!

Yelp
Great BBQ in a small place located next to an airstrip. Everything we had - pulled pork, brisket, hush puppies, Mac 'n Cheese, okra - was great! Service is friendly and upbeat. Gotta love it.

Yelp
Pik N Pig has been on my bucket list for quite sometime. My son and his girlfriend called told me they were going and did I want to ride with them.Well you know that answer.Saturday morning raining to beat the band so let's go eat. Just a short 1 hour trip from our house and we pulled in to the parking lot at the end of the road. I already knew what I wanted from reading the reviews on Yelp.As we came in the folks at the front welcomed us to their establishment and seated us.Our waitress was taking our drink order while we was a sliding in our chair and asked did we want any appetizers. We jumped on the deep fried pickles with ranch dressing and my son wanted some skins. She told us as she set the basket's of appetizers down they are HOT out of the fryer. And she was correct. I chose a combination of pulled pork and BBQ chicken. With a side of slaw and baked beans. My son got the beef Brisket with backed beans and fried taters and onions. His girlfriend got a breaded fried chicken sandwich and fries. The kitchen staff was busy especially just opening at 11:00 but our waitress was as pleasant as attentive as any restaurant I have ever been in.My pulled pork was very tender and had a good smoke taste. The chick was just as tender and a great taste. My son said his brisket was on the money good.We both agreed the baked beans really complimented the meal. Her chicken sandwich had lettuce and tomato with mayo on it.After eating the appetizer's our eyes were growing bigger then our bellies but I managed to get all my food plus the delicious hush puppies with the wonderful butter that came with them all down.We should have left but our waitress had a good sale pitch that we really should try the Banana pudding. So she did tell us she would put it in a togo box and what we did not eat we could take home.So we eat a little and took the other home. The Pik N Pig lived up to everything we expected on our first visit. But def will not be our last.

Yelp
In on a Sunday for lunch. Haven't been here for several years. Got seated right away and ordered a drink. On line menu prices and currant prices are very different. ORDERED: Regular Brisket plate with potato salad, baked beans and hushpuppies. A friend warned me about the brisket being dry but being a brisket lover I had to give it a try. Came out cold and had to send it back. Brisket was tender but dry and had no smoke flavor. Would not order it again. The sides were OK. Ordered a 1/4 smoked chicken plate with same sides to go. Chicken had some smoke flavor. I would order it again. Also, Banana Pudding to go. OK flavor but not worth the $5.95 price for the portion served.

Yelp
Pik N Pig has to be one of the best barbq joint in North Cackalacky . I swear to higher ups! Someone told me to come check this place out It's our there in the woods right by the airport To me, being able to enjoy some tasty yummy barbecue brisket, pork chops, smoked chicken and pulled pork while watching the planes take off and land is such a fun and unique experience for people of all ages. Service is outstanding and the atmosphere can't get any better. It was 80 degrees and no clouds. What a day to spent on a Sunday yeah .My favorite was the smoked chicken. I'm sure you guyz will be on your way here. I like it a lot ...I'm sure you'll like it too won't disappoint.j

Yelp
Fun location! Delicious food and friendly staff! They are always so busy you want to get there early.

Yelp
Delicious! You pull up to an older airport, and this amazing little restaurant is just waiting to welcome you! We sat outside and they had heaters outside which was heavenly because it was cold and rainy outside the day we visited. Our waitress was fantastic and on top of our party of 13. Our drinks never ran out, she made sure we had everything we needed while we were sitting there. I ordered a classic bbq sandwich, and it was incredible. Cooked to perfection, the meat was so tender. French fries were a nice and crispy side to the bbq sandwich. I ordered a banana pudding to finish off my meal and wasn't disappointed. The banana pudding was flavorful and well balanced. A wonderful experience that is definitely worth a visit if you're looking for some good bbq!

Yelp
After all these years, they still are one of our favorite spots. We went recently on a lovely sunny day and sat outside Service, food, atmosphere

Yelp
An bbq institution in Carthage, situated at a small airstrip. Been going for years and always find it satisfying. However, the last time, it was not 5 stars. Service is wonderful; the new building, while refreshed is not homey....a little stark.

Yelp
Cool place Great bbq Fly in airstrip bbq place Great friendly staff Pretty cool having small private plane land and take off while there Would return when in area
google avatar

Joe N.

Yelp
Man this place was awesome!!! I really enjoyed seeing the planes along with the excellent food!! Will return there for sure with family and friends!!

Hilton E.

Yelp
I've been 3 times. The first two times were amazing; best bbq I've ever had, and I'm a North Carolinian. The last time we got there later in the day and there were no bbq products left. Got the chicken and it was good but nothing special. Airport next to it is a unique feature that adds to the experience. I always will go to pick in pig whenever I am in the Carthage area.

Yelp
Nice people Nice spot The food however is mediocre at at best So many people love it I guess I just go on their off days

Ben C.

Yelp
As a pilot, I love flying into this restaurant! The food is great, but make sure to double check your weight and balance before departing. Runway distance is a little scary :)

Jul B.

Yelp
Awesome food and very professional positive attitude of the staff. Impressive and we highly recommend this stop!

Yelp
I roadie my motorcycle on a day trip and ended up in Carthage NC . Looking for a place to eat I decided to try the Pik N Pig at the airport. It was a beautiful day so decided to sit outside on the porch. I ordered spicy chicken sandwich w fries and sweet tea. The chicken was delicious and the bread was excellent. Besides the food the waitress who served me was outstanding. This is a gem of a place to eat especially on Friday as there was a lot of activity on the airfield. I saw several planes takeoff and land while enjoying my lunch. The folks that run this restaurant are very friendly and thanked me for coming when I paid my bill. I definitely will be back when in the area.

Scott S.

Yelp
Great real barbecue place in a beautiful setting. I had brisket, which was pretty good and a pork chop which was the best I've ever had. Coleslaw and beans were great. Hush puppies were delicious. You will question whether your directions are right as you drive down some country roads to get there, but it is correct. Situated on a small airport with a great patio overlooking the runway.

Yelp
Great food, great service and awesome atmosphere! Love watching the planes. Best barbecue this Texas native has found since moving here. Will definitely be back many times.
google avatar

Yelp
Great food and a fun play to enjoy your meal. The planes taking off and landing were entertaining.

Yelp
Ya know you have to try the food when the airstrip is named "BQ1"! Amazing service with the friendliest staff around. We told them this was our first visit and they said the sampler plate was the way to go. Very nice way to try a bit of each BBQ meat. Being from the south and having experienced Texas BBQ, it has been a bit of a challenge to get onboard with North Carolina's BBQ style. We enjoyed our sampler plate and sweet tea hit the spot. The locals packed the place all afternoon and what a lovely way to enjoy your meal looking out across the airstrip.
google avatar

D R.

Yelp
So excited that the Pik-N-Pig is back open! Flew in during the afternoon and they were already sold out of a lot of their meat entrees so I recommend getting there earlier in the day. Staff was incredibly friendly and hospitable, despite the crowds! I ordered the pulled pork plate and it was delicious. The best fly-in restaurant!

Jake S.

Yelp
The food is great! We arrived early, as instructed, to make sure widest availability for menu items. We ordered and within a few minutes, our food arrived. The brisket and pulled pork was excellent and the sides were delicious. The ambiance is unique, all aviation-themed. It was a weekday and weather wasn't perfect; we only saw one plane land and taxi by.

Emerson F.

Yelp
In a small town, it can be hard to find good barbecue, but this place has fulfilled all of my barbecue needs. Although we had to wait a little while for our food when it came out, oh we savored it. Compliments to the chef.
google avatar

Grant H.

Yelp
My gf and I consider ourselves BBQ experts after hitting 12 of the 20 restaurants on the NC BBQ trail. If someone ever asks our #1 so far, this is our agreed upon answer (we differ in rankings from there). The scenery is unmatched, an experience in itself that's good enough to participate in even if the food was terrible. Not the case here though. The barbecue is mouth watering. The green beans with some vinegar are near the top of vegetable sides on the BBQ trail. And the jalapeño butter you dip your hush puppies in really takes the meal to the next level. Not sure the remaining 8 places we need to try will be able to match this experience. It's definitely worth a 2 hour drive, which we would have to do to return. Wouldn't think twice about it on a lazy Saturday

Nicole G.

Yelp
One of a kind bbq joint and the best place I ate at during my trip to Pinehurst. Loved sitting on the patio watching the planes fly in.
google avatar

Tonya M.

Yelp
Get there before they open because they are gonna be packed quickly. Very friendly staff and the Brisket is so good!

Mike B.

Yelp
Service was amazing. Food was great, we had a little of everything for lunch brisket was tender, pulled pork was good and the smoked chicken was fantastic. It sits on an active airfield so if you are a private pilot pop in for a lunch or breakfast. Great location and well worth the trip.
google avatar

Yelp
Ok this place is amazing - I can't believe it took me 6 years to finally come here and I can't wait to come back. Pik N Pig is located in Carthage next to a mini airport/air strip. People fly in to grab dinner at Pik N Pig so if you're an aviation fan, there are constantly planes coming in/out during peak dining periods! The weather was really nice so we sat outside on the patio and got a good view of all the action at the airport - the kids loved it especially. One plane even came back around and flew by really low which was fun. Besides the airport part, the food was amazing. We couldn't decide on what to order from the menu so we got the sampler platter which comes with a little bit of everything - pulled pork, brisket, chicken, french fries, baked beans, hush puppies and potato salad (we subbed for slaw). Everything was great! I liked the pulled pork but the chicken was surprisingly very good. The hush puppies came with jalapeño butter - such an amazing combo! The only downside is that I honestly didn't care for the bbq sauces they had but that wasn't necessary for any of the food items. For dessert, we got banana pudding and Coca Cola cake. The cake was alright but the banana pudding was delicious. I wish Pik N Pig was closer to Raleigh or else I'd go all the time. Definitely worth a trip if you're ever in the Sanford/Pinehurst area!

James J.

Yelp
Best bbq in Moore County, great cooks, intimate facility, can watch airplanes land and takeoff daily from local airport. Always worth a drive!
google avatar

Dan I.

Yelp
Cash Only! ATM in restaurant charges $2.50. Restaurant is situated on a small airplane landing strip, very nice scenery. The BBQ sampler plate was a good size for me. Nothing spectacular about the food, the parking lot was packed, so I figure it a locals favorite. The only other bbq restaurants in the area are chains, so if you want decent bbq, and have cash, I would say come here.
google avatar

Denise H.

Yelp
Great food and great service. We always look forward to going there when we return to our second home on the East Coast. We tell everyone to try it out. The ambiance is perfect, too. We love sitting there near the tarmac. We stayed once at the RV park, too. I was able to work from the RV by connecting to their Wi-Fi. Thank you for reopening!!
google avatar

N W.

Yelp
Just great all around. The fact that there are private planes taking off and landing within maybe 50 yards is really cool. The food has always been great and the Cola Cake is a must try! After about a three year rebuild I can say that everything is better than before!
google avatar

Mary D.

Yelp
Located next to small airplane landing field . Outdoor eating available. Nice to watch the planes while you wait and eat. Entertainment at times outside. Brisket was tender tasty but cold. Chicken was GREAT NICE SMOKY taste. slaw had nice texture but bland. Beans were basic tasty pulled pork was moist very good. Would come again when in the area but would not drive 1.5 hr just for the food. Very reasonable prices.
google avatar

Butch D.

Yelp
What a great experience. Food was awesome. Servers were amazing. We got in about 30 mins before closing and you wouldn't have guessed it. They treated us as well as they would have if we showed up in the middle of the day. Lots to choose from. Food was made on site, a lot of it (nacho chips, hush puppies, bbq sauce, etc). This place is well worth the stop. Any for entertainment you can watch the airplanes land and take off on the runway right in front of you. We will definitely be back the next time we are in Carthage, NC. If you want a down home good amount of food at a great price...check it out. I don't think you can be disappointed!

Cecilia P.

Yelp
Food was delicious. Will definitely go back.....They we're fabulous with seating our large group. And enjoyed watching the planes...
google avatar

Peggy H.

Yelp
This place was recommended by a friend. I can only say, it did not disappoint! The brisket was amazing. I think I loved my hush puppies the most. The service was amazing and the facility clean. They offer brews, wine and more. Catering too They DO NOT take cards but have an ATM machine inside the foyer! This did not stop us from loving their delicious food!
google avatar

Yelp
Unique, cool setting at McConnell airfield (4 stars). Wood smoked meats (pulled pork, beef brisket), with good smokey flavor, but a little dry and smallish portion size (3 stars). Good sides (chunky applesauce, red slaw, butter beans, fried okra, french fries) and good hush puppies (3 stars). Very friendly and hospitable service (5 stars). Cash only. Good spot if in the Carthage, NC area.

Yelp
Due to the Corona virus we were forced to eat take out. Fortunately we got to eat at their pavilion on site. Got the sampler for two which was smoked chicken, pulled pork, brisket, fries, hush puppies, and two sides which we got baked beans and coleslaw. Sweet tea and banana pudding added. This was an overall great meal and was part of our N.C. bbq trail tour. The brisket was very good and had great smoke. The pulled pork was excellent and the smoked chicken was super, it just fell off the bone. The sauces they make both sweet and spicy are perfectly paired with their smoked meats. Hush puppies were so light and tasty. The banana pudding was just so good, we knew we were at the right place for a bbq trail stop, outstanding!

Yelp
Off the beaten path, but if you're looking for something fun and different in a dining experience - this is it! Located next to an air strip, this tasty BBQ joint fits the bill! I saw this on NC Weekend last fall and have wanted to go ever since. It was a Saturday and the place was packed! They have a parking lot next to the restaurant & airstrip and we were lucky to get one of the last places. I'd recommend going during the week or right when they open if on the weekend. There's seating inside and ample picnic tables under a shelter outside for the real bird's eye view of the planes coming in and out to partake in this delicious food. They have a nice menu to choose from of BBQ and the like. The pulled pork platter is a generous portion of very moist pork. They have various sides to choose from and sauces on the table. The wait staff is seasoned and no nonsense when it's crowded, so mind your p's and q's! Overall this is a great place for a unique experience!
google avatar

Jonathan V.

Yelp
From the smoked chicken, brisket and pulled pork, it was all great. Red slaw was crunchy, but good. Baked beans were okay. Hushpuppies were good, with jalapeño butter. If the beans and hushpuppies were better, I would have given this 5 stars. While we were there, 2 planes and a helicopter landed. Cool experience.
google avatar

Bradford D.

Yelp
Although not bad, the overall experience was tempered by active NC Coronavirus restaurant precautions and the required rigging to keep customers out of the dining room. But the pulled pork was actually super-tender, and the food, in general, was pretty good, but nothing like I remember the LAST time I attended a genuine 'pig-pickin' in North Carolina...roughly 36 years ago (literally in the Fort Bragg training area in the vicinity of Saint Mere Eglise DZ...and catered by Army cooks from the NC National Guard. Wow could those soldiers cook!) We were referred to this restaurant by a local Fayetteville resident and so we didn't mind making the hour drive from Fayetteville to this location. We found it situated on an older but semi-active airstrip (Gilliam - Mc Connell Airfield 'BQ1') with some monuments to local war heroes/pilots. Very cool. All the orders were taken out front by a lady that was prompt and efficient, and after ordering we sat down under the covered pavilion and waited...and swatted all manner of flying insects. Kinda' ruined the mood. But our names were called and we went and retrieved our food and paid for it inside...and brought it back out to the outdoor pavilion to eat. Again, the 'atmosphere' there was just not all that hospitable (flying nuisances, the heat/humidity...) and just detracted from (at least) me fully enjoying the event. The BBQ sauce was good but not what I was expecting. The three of us left full, but wanting more. Three Stars.
google avatar

Jasmine T.

Yelp
I tried this place because so many people of Moore county recommended me to go here. Even though I'm not a big barbecue fan, this place is all right. I feel like I'm very biased though because it's hard to "wow me" with barbecue. The restaurant itself is very cozy and welcoming. Our server sat us by the window so we can see the airplanes take off. She also told us everything about the menu since it was our first time. We ended getting the sample platter. The barbecue was very moist and juicy. I think it could have been better if the sauces were better. They have a sweet and spicy sauce. The spicy wasn't too spicy and it was a vinegar base. The spicy was my go to, because I wanted that NC sour barbecue taste. I could've soaked everything in the sauce though, the vinegar taste wasn't that strong. Would I try this place again? Probably not. But don't let my opinion stop you from trying it.
google avatar

Tim C.

Yelp
If you grew up cooking bar-b-que like I did then you have a hard time finding it tasting like you remember. Actually, really good bar-b-que can eaten right off the hog without any sauce being added. Sunday we rode to Pik N Pig in Carthage to try what we had been told was very good bar-b-que. Great ride there on country backroads. When you ride up you notice there is a small air field next to the restaurant. Several planes parked there of different sizes. If you have children they will enjoy looking at them and the small memorial dedicated to some local pilots that flew in WWII, as well as a replica of a Mustang fighter. The food was just as good as we were told, and while it tasted great without sauce, they do have 2 of their own that you can add if so desired. I have the 2 meat combo with pulled pork and brisket, and they were both excellent, juicy, tender and a nice smoky taste. I was a little disappointed in the baked beans but once I added some of their sauce they were fine. Besides, I was there fornthe bar-b-que, not the fixins. They have a decent beer selection from the local brewery but because on bikes didn't get to sample. Pricing was reasonable and the servings are plentiful. They have plenty of space for outside seating and it was fun watching planes land and have the passengers come eat. Overall, a great place to go eat and pass the time

Yelp
A novel place to visit with friends and family. The staff is very accommodating and the view includes a small air strip with periodic airplane landings. The menu prices were fairly priced. My kids and I ordered the BBQ sundae. It was layered cole slaw, baked beans and bbq pork with a garnish of two hush puppies. AMAZING! This is more a western bbq taste but it is really good. The coca cola cake and banana pudding rocked! A cool place that is worth a visit!
