"I’ve heard that the stewed oxtail is the must-try dish at Pikliz in Winter Hill, but I can’t personally vouch for it as I haven’t tried it yet. On my most recent visit, I enjoyed the coconut stewed chicken with sides of Creole macaroni au gratin and plantains. (Listen, if there’s mac and cheese and plantains on a menu, those will almost always be my choices for sides. You’ll see them more elsewhere on this map.) My husband reports that the jerk pork is quite fiery. —RLB Currently offering takeout and delivery. Order: (617) 625-6255 / Uber Eats" - Rachel Leah Blumenthal, Terrence Doyle

HORRENDOUS Extremely and inedible salty fish and Okra. My fish arrived in a PLASTIC BAG. I paid about $60 bucks for my food, you'd think they could afford a Styrofoam box. This was a Sunday dinner too. This was a HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE

Google
The food was good, but when I got there to pick it up (15 minutes after it was supposed to be ready) the guy at the counter said they were out of jerked chicken and that he needed a few minutes. I let him know I was in a rush because my bike rental was charging me by the minute. They put a bag of food on the counter a couple minutes later and I just thanked the staff and left. It must have been someone else’s order because my girlfriend got the chicken and okra she ordered (and a very generous portion), but instead of rice and beans with plantains and mixed vergetables, I just had rice and beans with cabbage, which was a rather disappointing lunch. The rice and beans were not good enough to carry a meal. I’m also sorry for the person after me whose jerked chicken we were given. I would have been fine getting beef or something instead The food is good, but as many others have said the organization leaves a lot to be desired.

Google
If you do not know Haitian Creole don’t order person taking order did not know what I want and gave me what he wanted! Terrible service after calling them! Griot I got without rice is all fat! I ordered a small plate of rice and beans with griot and only got griot! At least person taking order should know English so don’t loose business. I payed for fat instead of meat!

I've gotten their black rice as takeout at least 7 times. It's too good! There isn't much seating inside the restaurant. Its a takeout friendly place.

Google
One of the best Haitian food I’ve had! They are nice, patient taking your order and friendly. One of the best Haitian food spots in the Boston area! Thank you :)

Jea Kim

Google
Excellent value Haitian cuisine place that specializes in Jerk style meats. Recently visited to try their jerk pork and fried goat, and both plates had copious amount of meat and the sides that was almost equivalent to two meals. For the sides, we got the rice, beans, and okra, and the soft texture of the okra served as a good mediator between the huge chunks of meat and the rice. The jerk sauce was a bit spicy, but it was still a great flavor addition to the meat. There were only a handful of small seats available in the restaurant, but there are plenty of seats in the nearby park where you can relax and enjoy this amazing Haitian food.

Google
Decent food with generous portion. However, terrible customer service. They did not get my order correct and it was a struggle to have them give me what I paid for. They were rude and the service was very slow despite no other customer being there at the time. The few times I have ordered pickup from uber eats was not great either. When the app told me the food was ready for pickup, they did not start on my order and did not even know my order existed. It is good takeout food but I would not come here again because the headache of buying the food is not worth it.

Kory Thomas

Google
This place served me quite possibly the worst jerk chicken I’ve had in my life. Salty, spicy, and still flavorless. The stir fried cabbage was undercooked and also flavorless.

Yelp
Very disappointing first try! Given the rave reviews I was expecting to have a great dinner, and instead got dry, mostly tasteless, extremely overcooked food. I ordered delivery around 7pm, and got my food fairly quickly. I ordered jerk chicken with plantains and rice & beans, and quantity was large, which was nice. The beans were not bad. The plantains (which are some of my favorite things to eat) were dry as a bone (not crispy, but dry) and utterly tasteless. I had maybe three bites. The jerk chicken was so overcooked that parts of the meat audibly snapped when I took it apart. Parts were edible, and parts were not. I've eaten a lot of chicken and overcooked my share of food, but I didn't even know chicken could get to this state. One piece basically fell off the bone just because it was so dry that nothing was left to connect it. I don't know what went wrong: the other reviews sound great! But I'm not sure how even an off night can result in such bad food. Based on this experience I definitely wouldn't try it again.

Yelp
Everything, everything is good! The oxtail and the pâtés are amazing! Kudos to this Somerville staple *****!

Kaori M.

Yelp
I had Jerk chicken with black rice and okra. Chicken was great. Also I really like the sauce for the chicken. The volume was big, which is a plus. Chairs were all up so no inside dining. We took out it to Foss park and did picnic.

Vincent T.

Yelp
Bare bones entrance but food is really good with the exception of the rice and beans which were really dry and not fluffy. Pork was so good Would give 4.5/5 but points off for rice

Della S.

Yelp
Everything I tried was so tasty! Their pikliz is tangy with a nice kick and super addicting. I ordered delivery through Uber Eats and got their fried pork ($18) and fried goat ($22). Each order came with 2 sides. I originally wanted rice and beans but I think they ran out so they gave me a bunch of plantains instead. The fried pork came with a mix of fattier and leaner pieces, all of which had a crispy exterior and lots of savory flavor. The fried goat was similar, although the fried goat was leaner in general and came with pieces of bone. Both meat dishes were very flavorful on their own. The black rice was my favorite side! It was so savory and the rice grains were perfectly cooked to have a chewy yet soft texture. While the rice was very flavorful, it was not greasy at all. The plantains and macaroni au gratin were also delicious. I loved dipping the plantains in the cup of broth/sauce that came with the order. The macaroni was on the softer side but was soaked with cheesy flavor. I can't wait to eat from here again!

Akira M.

Yelp
I must first begin by stating how delicious the food was. The location appears small due to limited seating, but there is nothing that falls short in flavor when it comes to the people graciously serving the food! They were funny and kind while taking our orders. They did let us know that the food would take some time to prepare but they would bring it right away. It surely did not take as long as I assumed. You can hear the ambiance yourself. The only reason I give it 4 stars is because the fish was drowning all over again. But it was still very good! The price is worth the plate, you see the size! Just order it.

Yelp
Tiny spots like this that you can't help but frequent for comforting food is the real reason I started yelping 12 years ago. Regardless of how popular they may have become, I still can't help but want to promote and write about the beauty of their art of food. First visit I found myself laughing deep within. He was so Caribbean in the sense of time - chill, slow, and at the pace of the tropics. If it was "busy", it comes when it comes. If it isn't, it still comes when it comes. Definitely reminds me of the whole snapper I ordered at a small stall in the Bahamas where it took 20 minutes to receive a whole fried fish despite being the only customer. But what matters more than time is always the execution of what is sent out to customers. The food here is delightful in the sense that it packs bold flavors and flavors from home. From goat to chicken, cabbage to okra, and their three types of rice...be it on hot holding or flash finished to order...they garner the same delight of being immersed in layers and layers of flavorful depth. I will be back and I will sing praises of it. As I did every bite each visit. Represent. Let your dishes always represent. Thank you.

Gregory C.

Yelp
Great Caribbean food. The jerk fish is packed with flavor and can be a bit spicy and a decent size.

Salaberry G.

Yelp
The food is delicious , the service outstanding. The restaurant is beautiful. I had the rice and beans and the legumes, with a side of jerk chicken added to it.

Areeba Z.

Yelp
This was a pleasant surprise. I got UberEats from here on a weeknight. I got jerk chicken and fried goat, both of which came with two sides. The food had generous portions so you will have leftovers (always appreciated). The jerk chicken, although a little salty, was very spicy. The mac and cheese were to die for! The black rice were also very flavourful. I wasn't a big fan of the plantains as I like them softer and these were on the dry side. But the rest of the food definitely made up for it. 10/10 recommend!

Z M.

Yelp
Rice was amazing , probably my favorite part! And they are SO GENEROUS with it. Today is Friday, it will last me till Thursday. Oxtail is good, this is my first time eating goat and I liked it. It's kinda like beef jerky but more gamey which I personally enjoy but if u don't like gamey you should get something else. The pikliz is so good and very spicy almost like a birds eye pepper level, but also vinegary but that's what I like. Plantains is not the style I'm used to, which is the sweet kinda soft gooey style, it's more hard dry and starchy and not sweet but if that's what you like, go for it. The black rice was the best overall! If I want Caribbean food again, I'll order here for sure !

Megan D.

Yelp
Pikliz is still REALLY GOOD. This time I went to the establishment, placed my order and waited. The place is clean, I was able to see into the kitchen and smell the freshness of my food. The cooks wore masks and customer mask policy is enforced. We ordered beef patties while we waited and they were incredible, delicious flaky goodness. Highly recommend! The wait was pretty long but the food was so good I got over it quickly. In all, we ordered the red snapper with veggies, oxtail with Mac & cheese and finally, goat meat with rice and beans. The meats and fish were amazing, the rice was absolutely tasty, the Mac and cheese was too cheesy for my borderline lactose intolerance but someone might love it that way. I truly enjoyed my meal. Highly recommend takeout!!

Monica A.

Yelp
I've been wanting to try this place for years! Finally made it. The carbs were the highlight for me - the black dojo rice and the Mac & cheese were really good due to the unique spice combinations. You'll also find stews, fried goat, jerk chicken and veggie sides, and for refreshments they've got a selection of Central American/Haitian sodas. It's a small space, so it's not convenient for group dining, but I'd recommend it for takeout. Portions are huge, so you'll leave full and happy.

Deff J.

Yelp
Quite literally the single best deal for food in the greater Boston area. As an added bonus, the jerk chicken is fantastic, spicy and amazingly well cooked. Red beans and rice are plantains too. I can't wait to come here ten more times and you should too

Natasha M.

Yelp
I stop by this place today as I haven't had Jamaican in a while; was already in Somerville and didn't want to drive to my usual spots in the Jamaica Plain area. The food had ok flavor, but the rice was under cooked, the oxtail was so so and I asked for sweet plantains and was given green. A plate that usually goes anywhere else for 17-22$ was 27$. So unfortunately will not be returning.

Diedre H.

Yelp
The legume, jerk pork and okra were good. It's a cute new restaurant. The plaintains were a little dry.

Jaebirdie 0.

Yelp
I tried this place because I wanted to incorporate some Haitian dishes into my annual Friendsgiving get-together this year. I saw the great reviews on YELP, so I decided to order a plate of food to try before I made my final decision. I ordered fried pork, black rice, and mac & cheese. I was impressed, so I placed an order for catering. Long story short, I did not get what I paid for. I ordered a half pan, each of white rice, black rice, sweet plantains, and mac & cheese. I didn't get the black rice and the Mac and cheese tasted nothing like what I had just a few weeks prior. I was also asked to pick up the food from a different restaurant. I'm not sure if that had anything to do with it. I reached out to the owner but I never heard back. Needless to say, I will never order from them again.

Victoria T.

Yelp
HUGE portions! I got the jerk pork, which was really good, but also really fatty. It came with rice too, it was so much food for I think ~$11. It came with extra sauce on the side too, I think it was just the jerk seasoning sauce. It was a little spicy.

Jake R.

Yelp
This spot is an absolute home run. I was visiting from out of town (LA's a great food city but the Caribbean options are a bit lacking) and couldn't have had a better experience. My jerk chicken and my partner's curry chicken were both phenomenal. The portions were gigantic, the rice was as flavorful as rice gets, and my okra was delicious (and somehow not sticky at all). It's an absolute hole in the wall, probably best experienced as a takeout place (we ate in a nearby park) but the food was out of this world.

Demeka F.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite neighborhood eateries. At one point, I was going here weekly. The food is great. I typically get the stewed chicken, rice and peas, cabbage and sweet plantains, which are really good. The servings are big enough for a couple meals, so it's a great value for the price. The only downside is that the restaurant can be slow at times, or they might miss your order. I've also got my company to cater here twice, the food was great! But there was a wait past the set time to pick up the catering, so if you do cater, give yourself enough time in case the order is ready. Overall, I definitely recommend for personal and for catering.

Yara P.

Yelp
I usually refrain from writing reviews if it's not a good one but I felt as if this one needed to be written. As you can imagine my frustration with this place. Payed over $40 for my order just be be bland, cold and even undercooked. My husband got the jerk chicken rice beans and plaintains, as you can see in the picture his plate came undercooked the chicken was literally bleeding. I got what was supposed to be coconut chicken with black rice with plaintains and I did not receive what I ordered. I got stewed chicken and what seems to be just regular rice and beans. We also ordered a side of macaroni and cheese which tasted like crafts Mac and cheese. You can only imagine our frustration to paying almost $50 at this place and receiving what we did. Terrible service. I would NOT RECOMMEND eating here at all.

Alexandra A.

Yelp
Came here tonight and wow-- HORRIFIC customer service and basically got robbed. Have been. Coming here for years and they clearly hired some horrible folks!!! They overcharged me for things I never ordered and refused to give me a refund. Unethical business practice. DO NOT COME HERE!!! Disgusting place!!

Alison G.

Yelp
What a gem! I'm always down for good Caribbean and this place has delicious stews, sides and meat pies. Thank you to Adin for being such a generous and attentive server. We will be back.

Angela V.

Yelp
I'm so thrilled that we have a restaurant outside of Boston where I can get my jerk chicken fix. It's a huge plus side that this restaurant is a Caribbean fusion restaurant so I order Haitian black rice, okra and jerk chicken every single time!! It's sooo good.

R.S D.

Yelp
I got the jerk chicken, with okra and Creole Macaroni Au Gratin along with a side of rice and beans. The jerk chicken was kinda bland the first day, but when I reheated my left overs the next day it tasted better so I don't know what happened haha. The okra and the Creole Macaroni Au Gratin was really tasty and the spices were wonderful. The rice and beans were good and tasty. There was this little container inside with what looked like a sauce or something like that, but I wasn't sure what it was in it so I ended up throwing it away (if someone could tell me what it was that would be great!). Overall, very good. Honestly they gave so much that I'm still eating it after 4 days which I appreciate

Kimberly B.

Yelp
Asked about oxtail, the guy said "huh". Ordered a side order of sweet plantain. He proceeded to cut up a green plantain to fry. Retreated to back of house for the rice. Went to hand in a $20 bill. Guy opens his drawer and looks confused. Has 2 $5 and 2 $1. I grabbed my money and left. Will not ever come back.

Michaela L.

Yelp
My favorite place for jerk chicken, period. The black rice is also amazing. I wish I lived closer, this would be my go to spot.

Melissa H.

Yelp
This is my second visit here and I would absolutely recommend this place to anyone! Absolutely delicious food and very generous portions. The stewed oxtail was fall off the bone tender and just so flavorful. The jerk chicken was equally tender, delicious and perfectly seasoned. Highly recommend this dish unless you're sensitive to spicy food, personally I love some heat! The creole macaroni and cheese was my favorite side with just a hint of heat and so cheesy! The fried plantains are good but the black rice was really perfectly cooked and well seasoned. I will definitely be back!

Jesse M.

Yelp
Last 4 times I have ordered i have been called more than 45mins later and told they are out of something. The ox tail used to be good with great portions now when you can get t, you get maybe 4 pieces, burnt mac and cheese and and tasteless rice and beans. The customer service is also rude 100% of the time demanding that I cancel my order when they are the ones who call and tell me they cant fulfill the order.

dayanne d.

Yelp
The food was good. The legume was really delicious and the griot (fried pork) was just as good. But I think they should plate the legume with the bean sauce because just white rice isn't typical Haitian. Delivery guy left the food on the front door and didn't say anything. I was going to tip in cash but never had the chance to see him.

Devin T.

Yelp
The food was sooooo delicious! Will definitely recommend! Wish I had pics but I had the fried snapper with banan and rice with sos viande

Linh D.

Yelp
This is my go to Caribbean comfort food place. I've tried both their oxtail & Jerk chicken. Their jerk chicken is my all time fav bc it's well seasoned, fall of the bone tender w a nice spicy kick. Their Diri Dijon Dijon rice and sweet plantains totally complete the dish. Their portions are very generous. If you're on the fence, give them a try you won't regret it!

Tinesi P.

Yelp
The Griot and Pikliz was on point and the beef patay's was different from what I am use to but not bad! They lost two stars because of the Diri ak Djon Djon (Black Rice) and macaroni pie. The macaroni was tasteless. And the Black Rice tasted more like coconut milk that Djon Djon, the was no balance in favor. They didn't have red sauce (for Haitians that is a must with rice) and they did give plantain with the dish. Normally any West Indian restaurant will give you two plantains on the side. Smh Since I had to do a 26 minute walk over to get the food (the buses were acting weird) I won't do it again. I grew up eating Jamaican & Haitian food so I can picky with flavors (I know how the food is suppose to taste)! The white folks next to me was LOVIN the food. I guess it all depends.

Erez B.

Yelp
Love the food. Love the portions. Love the price. I've had the chicken jerk with black beans and rice. Also had the coconut chicken with black rice and okra. Love the spicy cabbage as a condiment. Kicks up the flavor. My 13 yo daughter and I shared a dish, got full, and I still had leftovers for lunch the next day. I definitely recommend this hole in the wall.

Stephanie B.

Yelp
Pikliz is our go-to for Haitian food. We love the "black rice" or djon djon rice, it's perfectly seasoned and cooked. The okra is my personal favorite side, again perfectly seasoned. They definitely know how to cook oxtail. Oxtail can be greasy and fatty, but I haven't found this to be the case here, very well cooked. You get your choice of a protein and 2 sides and can also do a la carte. If you're new to Haitian food and want to give it a try, I highly recommend!

DeMornye J.

Yelp
Great food. Worth the drive from the Cape every time! I loveee the Mac and cheese. Oxtails are great. The portion size goes a long way!

Noneofurbisness S.

Yelp
Good people, good food, fast, delicious, good value and they also offer smaller to go portions for $7.00 which is great for those "no time for long lunch" days

Mary Z.

Yelp
the portions were huge!! Proportions are odd though because I just got a huge portion of cabbage and carrots in the larger section. The cabbage and carrots were ok, a little undercooked for my liking and wasn't too flavorful. However the Macaroni was amazing! So so flavorful. Probably the best I've had since I'm not the biggest fan of Mac and cheese. The oxtail was nice and tender, and it comes with a side of oxtail sauce as well. Service was super nice

Chris L.

Yelp
In terms of flavor of the food, this place is a solid 5/5. I ordered the jerk chicken with black rice and plantains. This has got to be some of the best rice I have ever had. Well seasoned and delicious! The same goes for the jerk chicken. It was stewed or baked in this delicious spicy jerk sauce. Really a wonderful lunch. One thing I would have liked was a bit less rice and more meat for the lunch. For $12, I thought I would get more than 1 chicken leg with the meal. Other than that, definitely worth trying the food here- Thanks Pikliz!!

Gel G.

Yelp
Amazing. Simply amazing. Legitimately took me back to grandma's kitchen dining table. Not only was the food absolutely delicious and flavorful, but the portions were beyond generous.

Sukanya A.

Yelp
I'd highly recommend the Jerk Chicken with coconut rice and Fried plantains. Must try!

Erika H.

Yelp
Great place, amazing flavor! I got the jerk chicken, Mac and cheese and black rice. They give you a lot for your money, which is great! And they give you extra sauce! Will be coming back soon!

Brian B.

Yelp
I try to stick to the rule of not forming an opinion about a place that I haven't frequented at least twice. But then there are places like this. Instant classics. I'm by no means an authority on jerk chicken, so let me just tell you this: Juicy chicken with deliciously crisp skin and penetrated by the spicy hot jerk seasoning. So good! Sides were excellent as well. I had rice and beans (with a good scoop of jerk sauce over it) and nicely crunchy stir-fries. cabbage and carrots. Can't wait to go back!

Igor R.

Yelp
The good: girlfriend got curried chicken, okra, rice and peas, cabbage. I got ox tail, Mac and cheese, carrots and peas. We also got an order of jerk chicken to go for a midnight snack. All the food was fantastic. The Mac and cheese was very rich, bit of a wonderful surprise. Jerk chicken could be a little spicier, but had great flavor and cooked to perfection. My only complaint is they didn't have an available menu when we got there - and the employee seemed to be more interested in what was going on on the TV than ringing us up or helping us navigate the food. But he did give us generous portions.. so.. Very limited seating, I'd recommend takeout.

Lucinda A.

Yelp
This restaurant will have your taste buds dancing and screaming for more. A friend suggested I come here and I was not disappointed. The meat was tender and full of flavor. Many hats off to the cook. The jerk chicken was so fresh and flavorful I thought I was in Jamaica for a hot second. They give you more than your money's worth. When I saw my plate my eyes lit up because it was a good amount of food. The customer service was great quality, the employees were able to answer my questions about certain food which showed me that they care. Overall this place is a must, thank me later for the recommendation! Food: 5 Customer service: 5

Stavana B.

Yelp
The food here was delicious. Not only was it full of flavor the amount you get for the cost was great. I had enough to eat for lunch and dinner. I'm happy to see a great Haitain restaurant in the community. I can't wait to go back and try the other dishes they offer.

Kervin L.

Yelp
I had the fritay, oxtail black rice and beans. It was delish and affordable! The owner is real cool! The place is small and built for mostly take out or delivery but very authentic Haitian cuisine and Ive tried many so I do not take this lightly!

Calum B.

Yelp
Absolutely everything here is amazing. I've lived in winter hill for 2 months and have eaten here 20+ times. 10/10 would recommend, especially the jerk chicken

Emma W.

Yelp
Huge portions and great flavors for an amazing price! My friend and I ordered a jerk chicken with black rice and okra to split and we were stuffed beyond belief just from sharing the meal. The jerk chicken was so soft and juicy and it literally fell off the bone when we tried to pick it up. The black rice bursted with spice and was a great compliment to the chicken. Although a little too soft for my taste, the okra was a great compliment to the spices from the chicken and the rice. We also had the fried plantains which were a great appetizer! Definitely going to order from here again and try all the other dishes offered here!

Michelle T.

Yelp
Small take out place with a hot bar (not self serve). I don't know if I recall a large eat in area but there may be a few tables to dine in. I came here on a late Friday night and unfortunately ran out of a lot the items I wanted to try. So I went for the coconut chicken, side of the jerk chicken with coconut ride and a side of slaw. Both chicken was so tender and flavorful. The jerk chicken had a nice crispy skin with a kick to it which I enjoyed better than the coconut chicken. The coconut rice wasn't too fragrant of coconut but cooked well. I'm definitely going back to try the black rice and oxtail next time!
