The Best Montreal Bars and Cafés With Air-Conditioning | Eater Montreal

"Montreal is flush with great ice cream, but this Little Italy gelateria (which also serves cakes and savoury food) offers something most shops don’t: indoor seating. Grab a cone (in classic flavours like pistachio, chocolate and hazelnut) and enjoy it away from the gelato-melting threat of the sun (there’s also outdoor seating for you sun-worshippers). If you’re after something with a bit more of a kick, Pile ou Glace also does a mean affogato. There’s a second location up on Fleury." - Holly Tousignant

Google
I got the nocciola and gianduia — pistacchio was unfortunately out, would have been nice to try another classic flavor! The texture was quite good, closer to gelato rather than ice cream, although the nocciola flavor had ice crystals inside which made the taste more watery and affected the texture. The nocciola flavor was good but not as deep as I would have liked, and the gianduia was quite good. I would recommend this store if you’re looking for gelato in montreal, although unfortunately it doesn’t exceed excellent ones I’ve had in Italy.

The first time I visited, I was warmly welcomed by a kind lady with glasses and curly hair, her service truly stood out. A few days later, I was served by a younger brunette woman who seemed stiff and distant, but I didn't really say anything about it. On my third visit today, Wednesday, June 25th around 4 p.m., that younger lady was there again behind the counter, and her attitude felt even colder. She clearly knew she was being unwelcoming but made no effort to be polite. It honestly felt like she resented serving certain people, which came off as quite rude. I didn’t say anything, I just left and went to Café Gelato next door. It cost more for the same product, but I preferred that over a “you’re not worth my time” kind of service. Now, if I see the other kind lady with the glasses, I’ll know we'll get a nice service. She was there today too but I wasn't served by her unfortunately. Not trying to be harsh but the other one knows she's not nice at all. But I'll come back to try another time since I'm next door.

I went to pile ou glace with my wife. I had the hazelnut,Sicilian pistachio and almond flavors my wife had the non dairy mango chocolate swirl If this place is not the best gelateria in Montreal it’s second to none. If there was a Michelin star for gelato Pile ou Glace should get one. Keep up the good work

Google
Great service and always generous portions. If you love authentic Italian gelato and tiramisu, Pile ou Glace is hands down the best place in Montreal. I put on at least two pounds every summer because I always end up bringing home an extra pint!

Price is very affordable and the taste is very good!!! I think they use the real fruits and nuts instead of purely artificial flavor.

Yelp
We walked from the river to Little Italy and after exploring a bit, I decided all that walking deserved a gelato reward. I do not regret that excellent decision. I was very happy to see they offer affogato. If you are unfamiliar, this is gelato (I chose cream, but you can get whatever flavor makes you happy) with a shot of espresso poured over the top. It is served in a small cut so you can eat your gelato and then drink the sweetened espresso, or maybe you want to mix them together and make a 'shake' type dessert. It's your affogato, do what you like! My SO ordered a small serving of dark chocolate gelato. This gelato is absolutely decadent! So rich! So much flavor! An excellent choice. They offer a variety of flavors and if you are in the area I absolutely recommend a stop in here. Whether it's to cool off on a hot day, or to reward yourself just get you some gelato. You deserve it!

Yelp
Shopping in nearby Jean Talon market and decided to take a break with some yummy gelato. We were greeted by a friendly gentleman who served us efficiently and we tried the dark chocolate, strawberry, vanilla & Sicilian pistachio - they were all delicious! I hope to come back soon and try more flavors.

Yelp
Excellent gelato. Some of the best I've eaten outside of Italy. Smooth and rich, only a little goes a long way. Many different varieties available, you can even take points to go. Stop by and try for yourself!

Yelp
Great little spot in Little Italy! Best gelato I've had in Montreal, with a good variety of flavours and large portions (you can get 2 flavours in a single scoop cone/bowl)! I love the dark chocolate and café, and will be returning to try the pistachio soon. Service is also very friendly and efficient. The outdoor terrasse is lovely in the summer, although it's also just steps from Parc Little Italy!

Yelp
Walking distance from Jean Talon market. I sampled the Dark Chocolate which was too bitter for my taste, so I went with the Hazelnut instead and it was ridiculously delicious. Husband had Banana, it was alright. For a gelato place, decent amount of seating available inside, plus some tables outside.

Yelp
This simple sunny little place on St Laurent just before Jean Talon, down the street from the Market, has smiling staff who are never stingy with the samples, even when your mom is trying everything, and trying to get you to try it all, and there's a line forming behind her and you're turning red.. There's ample seating indoors in the air-conditioning and tables outside as well. They serve a list of Italian style sandwiches which I've never tried, so someone else should weigh in here. All I can tell you is that there are times I choose the creamy perfect toasted almond here over anything down the block at Havre aux Glaces, and that's saying something. If you're really interested in Italian ice cream and sorbet, I suggest a taste off walking back and forth between the two. I'll expect your results here shortly, and not matter which ice cream shoppe you ultimately choose, we both know you'll be the big winner

Yelp
There's ice cream, then there's gelato. Pile ou glace serves up the best Italian gelato in Montreal. It's the closet you'll find to the real deal like it Italy. They have many rich and decadent flavours such as amaretto and hazelnut, but they also have lighter and fruitier flavours like coconut and strawberry. My boyfriend and I usually order the sicilian pistachio. It's sooooo good. Like I previously stated, it's the closest thing to the real deal that you'll find in Montreal. A cone with 2 scoops of ice cream is around 4$. I always get the sugar cone. For 25 cents more, it's well worth it.

Yelp
Cute spot near Little Italy part of Montreal. We happened to stumble on it while walking around in the area. It's in walking distance of Jean Talon. I tried this pistachio one, and the consistency was perfect as well as the sweetness. My husband's been to Italy and had their gelato, and said this was very close to it. I wish I had the appetite to try the other flavors! I do know you need cash, so keep that in mind when you visit! There is a bench area to sit at right outside of the gelateria too.

Yelp
Service is a little slow (even on Montreal's chillier summer nights when there's less people) but aside from that, their gelato is great! They have some great choices/variety & their ice cream is properly refrigerated (hey, it's an important detail & I've had some bad experiences in the past). Choices include the typical gelato flavours (Baci, hazelnut etc...) & some more original ones. What I love most about this place is their location, right in the heart of Little Italy & a great place to stop by for a quick (depending on their service) frozen treat!

Yelp
Nice and large, lots of seating both indoors and out The prices are on par with other places like this, but well worth it on a hot day

Yelp
Cute little place in little Italy. They sell homemade gelato and they have a good selection. I had chocolate-hazelnut and white chocolate. Delicious mix. $3.75 for two large scoops of gelato is very reasonable. The place is air-conditioned and there are a few tables to sit. Or, you can go outside and eat on the 3-4 tables they have set out outside. A great little place.

Yelp
After supper at Il Cornelli, we decided to walk off our meal and go down a few blocks to have a gelato here. Been here many times before, always has great gelato - I like taking half chocolat and have lemon! with a good espresso!
