It was 6:40 p.m. on a Friday night and we wanted Mexican food. We had seen Pinches a few months ago when we went to the Steak n Shake that was located next door to it, so we thought we'd finally try it. Well, since then, the Steak n Shake has permanently closed, and the writing is already on the wall that Pinches will be next. Who closes at 7:00 p.m. on a FRIDAY night? While we were eating, several customers were turned away and as cars pulled into the lot when we were leaving, we were telling them the place was already closed!!
But besides closing so early, the food left a lot to be desired. Very pricey for what you get. One of us ordered the chicken enchilada dinner for $17.95. It said there were 3 enchiladas, but it looked like one blob about the size of a junior burrito, covered in a red sauce, plus the rice, beans and chips as sides.
I ordered a combo plate of 3 street-sized "grilled angus beef" tacos, with beans, rice and 5 chips, priced at $15.75. PLUS there was a $2.25 up charge shown as "Asada Taco" on the receipt--So $18.00 for three tacos that had some grilled chunks of meat on soft corn tortillas. I was asked if I wanted onion, cilantro and salsa on it and I said no, but could the salsa be put on the side?
Apparently, "No" means something else because when the plate (paper) was brought to the table, the meat was covered with chopped onions and cilantro. I have food allergies, so when I saw this mess, I told the server I had requested no onions or cilantro. She asked if I wanted her to remove them, and I said yes, but when she brought the plate back, the onions were mostly gone, but it looked like she had added more cilantro--I could barely see the meat it was so green!!
As for the "salsa"--well, that turned out to be a nasty-tasting green sauce and when I dipped a piece of non-cilantro'd meat into it to try, I thought I would gag. The meat tasted like it was old leftovers and definitely not "angus beef". The tacos had no cheese, no tomatoes--nothing. The rice? Blah and then yuck when the flavor was "enhanced" by the residual onions and cilantro mix I had scraped off the meat. The only half-way decent part of the entire meal were the FIVE tortilla chips which I used to scoop some of the beans with. Otherwise, the rest of the meal was inedible--even my husband said he didn't want the leftover tacos!!!
So, do the math: $15.75+$2.25+$17.95+3.01tax and $5.39 tip (done when ordering--won't make that mistake again) = $44.35 and we threw out HALF of it. Needless to say, we won't be going back.
