Where to Stop and Eat on the Drive From D.C. to Pittsburgh

"Heard of the Pittsburgh salad? Pine Grill calls its version a char-grilled chicken salad, but it still features the glorious, unlikely combination of iceberg lettuce and French fries. Customers can also find sandwiches, steak tips, pierogi, and specials at this homey stop (Thursday is pasta night)." - Missy Frederick

Had a very nice relaxing dinner. Good service, good food too. We had mushroom soup, house salad, pierogies, chicken dinner, and spaghetti. They gave me a little cup of vegetable soup to try since I’m a vegetarian. Good French fries too.

This place was very busy on a Wednesday at 6:00 pm and remained busy the whole time we were there. Wonderful service from Sarah. She was very attentive and checked on us often. The decor is a little dated but restaurant was clean. Good value for the cost. There are basically 3 vegetarian options: a salad, pasta with vegetables and a Beyond Meat Burger. We ordered the last 2. The Beyond Meat burger was very good. The pasta was good but a little bland.

Hands down the best chicken shwarma ever! The warm spices, the fresh herbs. the perfect char on the chicken! The only thing that would have made it better would have been a warm pita, but it was a definite winner. The fish and chips was excellent. The fish was huge. The chips were actually homemade potato chips. Crispy, crunchy deliciousness. Prices were very reasonable. The owner came by. He noticed a picture hanging on the wall just across from us was a tiny bit out of level and fixed it. That attention to detail is what makes this place a success. When you leave, go to the back parking lot for an unobstructed view of the Jenny Globe. It's cool. I only wish we had checked into our hotel before dinner. They have 10% off cards for Pine Grill at the front desk. But even at full price it was very well worth it. If you're in Somerset this is the place to go.

We wanted to try out a local restaurant after visiting the Flight 93 Memorial. Pine Grill was a fantastic choice! Super friendly service, and the food was outstanding. The Italian Sausage soup special was so good, we will be dreaming about it. Everything tasted freshly made, and our food arrived quickly. Our server, Mary, was a gem. We often stop in Somerset on our way to visit family in Delaware, and we will be making Pine Grill a regular stop as well.

We have been to this restaurant three times the other two times were wonderful. My family and I went there today as we pulled up to the restaurant. There was two young gentlemen outside that needed a jumpstart. I gladly help them and the jumpstart was not successful so we let the truck continue to run and charge there truck while they went and got new batteries, I went inside with the rest of my family, but I continue to walk in and out of the restaurant to check on the two gentlemen during this time I got a Gatorade from my truck and poured it into a Tumblr and walked back into the restaurant I ordered a mixed drink, which never came, I ordered a pork chop was completely dry and my wife ordered a steak that was over done. I never asked for a discount and also gave a 20% tip as I left the restaurant I spoke with the manager, named Mark about the experience and how I was unsatisfied, with the food and the service and also about not receiving my mixed drink. To my surprise, he got extremely angry in front of other guest to the point where I did not want to make a scene in front of the other guest or lower my personal standards to yell at another individual I decided to leave During our altercation he said the reason he never gave me a drink was because I walked in with my Tumblr with Gatorade, which I told the waitress that it was Gatorade and that I would like a mix drink. I returned home and then decided that I would like to call Mark and explain my situation as I spoke to him on the phone he rushed me off and said I that he has customers in front of him and to give him a call in an hour I do believe this is all a big misunderstanding, but never once was I told not to bring in the Tumblr nor did I even realize what I was doing when I brought the Tumblr it would’ve caused so many unnecessary problems today was over 100° outside I will never go back and I hope that the management staff reads this review and realizes how disappointed and how he made me feel while I was at his establishment Mark the general manager did not act in a professional way, and for this reason, I will never go to this establishment again

This is BY FAR the best Spinach and Artichoke dip with the Pita Bread combo on this side of the state!!

The place was HOPPING! We were happy to get a table. Our meals were good, although my husband's meat was overcooked. Our waitress was charming but run off her feet. The hotel desk clerk recommended the Pine Grill. We are glad she did.

Google
Tasty and classic. Great restaurant with great food. Service was also very good. I did think that the blue cheese sauce was a bit thin and mild, so just a warning for that. It was totally made up with blue cheese crumbles, however! I was given so much and it was very good. I would recommend all of the seafood and the steak salad.

Yelp
Really impressed with the service. Wowed by the food. Conveniently close to the highway. Felt like a family run restaurant. The attention to detail and warmth radiates through this place. I look forward to coming back and ordering something new.

Yelp
Food is just okay. My angel hair pasta was underwhelming and the grilled chicken tasted like it was cooked and reheated on the grill. The manicotti, my friend had, said it was good. Nice piece of bread and veggies included with the dish. The apple pie was good, tasted homemade, with good ice cream and a decent portion. Very slow service.

Yelp
My fiancee and I stopped here during our recent trip. We love to try out local restaurants when traveling. We stopped in on a Thursday night, which if you didn't know is their pasta night! I had my heart set on this crab alfredo I saw on their online menu. My fiancee ordered a classic reuben. The pasta was fantastic! The pasta had the perfect bite and you could tell the sauce was home made! We also ordered their tater skins as an appetizer. I liked them but didn't love them, they were a bit over-baked in my opinion. Dipping the taters in sour cream definitely made it pretty good though. Our waitress was a very nice woman and did an excellent job! She even complimented my hair which was very nice of her. Overall we had a great time here and loved the food as well as the old timey atmosphere! Really loved all the little western decor they had all over the place! Would definitely recommend!

Yelp
Great food and service. Family friendly atmosphere. Staff was terrific with no waiting. Will return next time I'm here.

Yelp
After a long day of skiing we decided to check out this local restaurant that was across from our hotel. They were pretty busy, but we were able to quickly get a high top table in the bar area. Our server was friendly and everything came out quickly even with how busy they were. We got the spinach and artichoke dip to start with and it was phenomenal!! I really liked that it was served with fried pita bread and that the dip was smooth, and didn't have big chunks of artichoke in it. For my meal I had the chicken Parmesan which was really good and the perfect size. It also came with a side salad, but I wasn't a fan of the raspberry vinaigrette dressing I ordered, I should have got their homemade ranch dressing instead. Overall it was a good meal and the menu is fairly priced!

Yelp
Was recommended by the motel we stayed in, and weren't disappointed. My wife had what she said was the best calf's liver in ages, and the Buffalo Wings did not disappoint --- ask for the blue cheese and extra Buffalo sauce if you like 'em wet. The wings are whole, so five wings gets you ten pieces. The wait staff was attentive. Just wish we could have stayed in town to try the other menu items!

Yelp
I've never had fries on a salad before. Our waitress thought it was crazy I've never heard of that but then again I'm a Hoosier traveling through. Blackened chicken on my salad was perfect and flavorful. My husband had the steak and Brussel sprouts and inhaled it. I didn't catch our waitress's name but she did a great job and was funny. We would definitely stop again when in the area.

Yelp
Food was ok, just ok. Service was average. Restaurant appeared clean. Parking lot was hard to exit.

Yelp
Great experience at Pine Grill Saturday night! Friendly staff, hearty and delish food, comfortable and very reasonable prices. Highly recommend!

Yelp
A pretty decent place to stop along a PA Turnpike trip. We recently trekked out to Washington, DC from Cleveland and needed a spot for a quick dinner meal along the way. This old time family-style restaurant fit the bill. My wife and I ordered a side salad to split, then she had a Reuben sandwich and I had a triple decker club sandwich and fries. All of the items were pretty much what you'd expect... * Iceberg and mixed greens lettuce with a few cucumber slices and a tomato on the salad along with homemade ranch dressing * Grilled marbled rye on the corned beer Reuben topped with kraut and swiss cheese * Toasted wheat bread, deli (packaged) meats, bacon, lettuce, tomato I'd say all of it was good, not great but filling and nothing surprising. Server was attentive and pleasant and we got exactly what we thought we would. Would stop here again under similar circumstances.

Yelp
Found a gem in Somerset PA - 2 blocks off the PA turnpike. Warm country decor with very friendly staff. Lots of choices at very reasonable prices. My husband had their Honey Hot chicken sandwich, which was huge! Wonderful flavor, hand breaded, did not have much heat. I tried something different I had not seen on menus. The Pine Grill Grain bowl, filled with tons of roasted and steamed veggies with barley & Farro. I added grilled steak, medium ( cooked perfect!), which was served with homemade balsamic dressing ( delicious). We will be back , plenty of menu items to try & saw many dessert options go by - we just didn't have any room left.

Yelp
Rustic, quiet, local place that's family friendly. Service with a smile & an overall nice meal. Had the baked Cod with mixed veggies. There is an Up charge for Blue Cheese dressing on salad. SO WORTH THE UP CHARGE---don't pass it up---you won't be sorry. Not many options in this area outside of fast food. After a 6 hour trek & post hotel check in, happened upon this place & glad I did.

Yelp
Nice people, bad food. I ordered the salmon salad and the salmon was really terrible, like it was frozen, thawed, refrozen and then cooked I don't know how. Outside was grey, inside was not smelling right. Salad was OK. For an entree costing $20, I wouldn't recommend. The people were really nice though.
google avatar

Vicki E.

Yelp
Food was great! We did their Thursday night Pasta specials. I had the seafood and my husband had Lasagna. Both were good. Our waitress was very nice and respectful. But not very attentive. We had to ask for Parmesan and bread. Then she did refill our water. Ambiance is ok for a small town but it could use some up dating. Everything was clean.

Yelp
Prompt friendly service and good food in decent portions. Maybe a little low on the ambiance
google avatar

Darrin L.

Yelp
Excellent place - everything I've tried here has been great. One recommendation though - if you have the salmon ask for the sauce on the side. They give you a lot and it can overwhelm the salmon. However, if on the side it becomes a perfect dish. Enjoy!

Yelp
Old school, reliable, a little pricy, basic sit down restaurant w little competitiion in Somerset, PA about 1 mile off the turnpike. Grilled chicken w vegetables -chicken was a little dry, veggies were flavorful but a little watery. Soup special "barbecue chili" had nice flavor, little meat, a little too sweet. Crab cakes were what you might expect if you ordered crab cakes so far from the ocean. Baked potato was unremarkable. Wait staff were friendly but a bit forgetful (water to the table, other drink orders). Burgers and steaks might be the way to go here.

Yelp
This place was amazing, from the food to the server who was the sweetest lady we really enjoyed our dinner. We will be back when visiting the area again.

Yelp
Pine Grill was recommended to us by the front desk at our hotel. Great recommendation. There were four of us. Each ordered something different. All the food, including the homemade chocolate cake, was excellent. Our server was friendly and helpful. Too bad we were just passing through, would definitely eat here again.

Doug E.

Yelp
We arrived on a trip across state and stood at the host station waiting to be seated. We waited at least 10 minutes while the servers raced around the dining room. I finally signaled a bus boy to show us to a table. We waited another 15 minutes for a server to take our order which arrived 15 minutes after that. All in all, it took 40 minutes from arrival to get our 2 sandwiches. My turkey club was made with thickly cut and unappealing processed deli meat which I had to remove from my sandwich. Our entire lunch stop took an hour for a relatively short order meal that we hoped would be better than fast food fare. This restaurant definitely needs more wait staff and definitely someone at the entrance to host arriving guests!

Ron S.

Yelp
Great local restaurant with a wide selection. We were welcomed warmly. Service was exceptional. Down home atmosphere.
google avatar

Yelp
Exceptional food and service. I wish it were closer so I could try everything on the menu.

Yelp
Everywhere is short-staffed but we've received far better service at other places. And when the management sets up a 6-ft folding table with chairs he got from his house(?) to accommodate more paying bodies, that shows a lack of consideration for customers and the over-worked staff. We didn't get any refills on our drinks (unsweet tea, lemonade) and the alcohol was very weak. The food isn't anything to write home about. The steak was too salty, but they didn't mess up on the burgers. It was a Friday night, so a half hour wait is to be expected. However, an hour and a half after being sat to getting out (with no drink refills) was not. My impression is this is just a spot for the local regulars to come for familiarity, but not much else.

Betsy B.

Yelp
Food was good & reasonable. Waitress was very friendly and helpful. Busy on a Wednesday night.

Yelp
We had great pasta dinners here and enjoyed the side salad with the house Italian dressing. Service was great, friendly and told us of good ice cream in the area.

Yelp
Not too bad at all! Stopped here after a nearby soccer match my son played in. There were 4 of us, me and my son, a team mate of his and that boy's mother. We were seated almost immediately (surprising - reservations not needed and it was Mothers Day) Drinks and food orders were taken quickly by a pleasant server. Coffee was decent, salads crisp and fresh. Our food orders ranged from my blackened chicken over angel hair with shrimp in a lobster sauce, a gourmet burger and fries, blackened swordfish and another pasta dish. All were hot and quite delicious! We ordered a cookie ice cream dish to share for dessert...yowza it was great! We had four spoons sparring for our shares! All reasonably priced - under $80 for everything. $20 for a tip and off we went, quite satisfied! Good spot! Well recommended!

Yelp
First time there Owner greeted us made us feel welcome right away We were traveling and never was there before I had clams special my wife had a pasta Tasted very good Reasonable pricing Would go back very good

Yelp
The atmosphere, the food and the service were good. One of those insane restaurants that don't do medium rare hamburgers. You get Pink or no pink. I ordered pink and got no pink.

Jay W.

Yelp
Nice atmosphere. Good food, generous portions, good service at a very reasonable price.

Yelp
Great little restaurant right on the main road in Somerset. Definitely worth stopping if you like to try mom & pop restaurants over franchises. The seafood pasta dishes were delicious and had a good amount of seafood in the dish.

Terri B.

Yelp
Our first visit to Pine Grill. The were busy on a Saturday night. But the wait was short. We sat in the bar area. My husband had the crab cake sandwich and salad. I had a blackened chicken sandwich. Both were tasty. The servers in the bar area were good. Food came out a bit slow. We heard they were short staffed. Seemed like a lot of locals visit. Many knew each other. Nice ambiance in the bar area. We are just visiting the area but may make a second visit during our stay. We would recommend.

Korey M.

Yelp
I had the pork chop with peach salsa and rice. Compliments to the chef! Our hostess was also delightful. She kept our drinks full and was very cheerful. Clean and quiet place. Just what we were looking for.

Samuel S.

Yelp
The best in town, Friday night special is not a hobby. Wonderful interior and great service

Marcus Q.

Yelp
I think they have the best steak and baked potato In Somerset. Good ambience. Nice place to get home style cooking.

Yelp
Dude this place is amazing, they are playing Indie rock - pop punk. Which was such a special treat. The soup, salad, and everything in-between is fantastic

Yelp
Owner there is a super nice guy. The food is always on point. The staff is friendly. Just a great establishment.

Yelp
OK: The Blackened Chicken Breast served over angle hair pasta with tomatoes, Portabella and button mushrooms, topped with a creamy lobster sauce with shrimp is hands down the BEST pasta I have EVER had!! Period. Double Period. AND, you can order a 1/2 or lite size serving which I did since we were traveling and I didn't want leftovers. Trust me, if I could have it to look forward to again, I would have. All full portion pastas served with house salad. For the "Lunch" or "Lite" eaters: Pasta dishes can be prepared in half the portion for half the price. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!

Kevin-Sandy G.

Yelp
We stopped by the Pine Grill Somerset after visiting the Flight 93 Memorial at the recommendation of the front desk at the Holiday Inn Express. We did not have reservations and it was a busy Saturday night. Pine Grill was very accommodating and was able to get us seated after a short wait. It was nice to hear folks tell us it's "worth the wait" as they passed by. The waitress was very friendly and the menu satisfied everyone in our group. We were very pleased with our meals. Two people ordered one of the specials of the night. My husband had a steak which he enjoyed and I had the chicken and mushroom alfredo over penne which was very delicious. We will definitely stop again when we are in the area and it's most definitely "worth the wait" if you find yourself without reservations.

Jen L.

Yelp
If I could leave no stars I would. Severely understaffed and unprepared. This place was packed on a Saturday so the food must be great right? It is not. Waited half an hour for our appetizer...zucchini planks. They were just ok. The marinara is super sweet but the horseradish sauce was good, the planks themselves were bland. But at least they were hot. Dinner finally arrived an hour after we ordered... my steak and cheese sandwich was burnt but cold shredded meat with two cold red pepper slices and a slice of cold melted velveeta on a roll they claim is hoagie but is not. Fries are extra and we're cold and had that freezer burn taste. Son ordered sautéed mushroom with his sandwich, they were steamed and tasted like dirt in a cup of brownish watery liquid. Other son ordered beef stroganoff which was lukewarm and the steak tips were charred and leathery. I don't know how this place has such good reviews. The only bright side is both waitresses were very friendly and attentive. I hope they're being paid well.
google avatar

Joanne M.

Yelp
We are staying at Fairfield Marriott! Concierge recommended pine grill! Tuesday evening it was pretty full and got more crowded after we sat down at 645. Waitress was very good but she was overworked and this restaurant was severely understaffed unfortunately! Food was mediocre at best! A roast beef sandwich was served on white bread! Could not believe it! Food was lukewarm! Not good ding experience! Sorry to have to write this but do commend our waitress! She tried and worked her butt off last nite!
google avatar

Yelp
Regular Here! Here's the scoop: It's definitely worth a stop if you're in town, worst case, you find the food average, best case, you find your new favorite stop off the turnpike! Friendly service and a down-home decor. The menu is filled with comfort food and the specials are unique and usually taste fantastic. The full bar makes ordering drinks easy and the seasoned bar staff are good at making unique drinks for days your not sure what to get. The Breakdown: I highly recommend the Meatloaf, Salmon with Dill Sauce, Chicken Rachel, Grain Bowl, Cream of Mushroom Soup, Chicken Club, any of the Steaks, Spinach Artichoke Dip, Blackened Chicken Pasta, Calamari, Seafood Scampi, Fish Sandwich, Grilled Chicken Salad, any of the Burgers and the Buffalo Chicken Wrap! Thursdays are pasta nights, with a whole list of pasta specials that aren't on the usual menu, and Friday they have homemade potato chips. Give it a look if you're passing through, or just looking for a new place to eat!
google avatar

Lynn Y.

Yelp
They have an extended menu we enjoyed the liver and onions with mashed potatoes and gravy with mixed vegetables. We ordered carry out and everything was put together nicely. The dining area was full so by that I would have to say they have it going on
google avatar

Michelle T.

Yelp
Waited over an hour for crabcakes ($24) which came on the a large plate with no sides and no sauce?!? They were dry!! My husband did not get a meal ... the waitress made a mistake. Had to ask twice for condiments and twice to get dinner rolls. My husband left without ever getting a meal after an hour and a half:(

Jane A B.

Yelp
Enjoyable respite in A charming restaurant on a long journey. Friendly, helpful staff and good food. The menu is somewhat eclectic and I loved the warm "grain bowl" salad while my husband had a more traditional and delicious fish and chips dinner, made with cod. Obviously this is a popular restaurant in the area, at 6 pm the place was packed.

Cindy R.

Yelp
When you just can't wait over an hour at Seven Springs for a lame tasting pizza, mediocre food at the Slopeside for ridiculous prices, or eating raw chicken from Chinese food at the Foggy Bottom restaurant, the Pine Grill Restaurant was GREAT! They have healthy options for me and I am a selective eater (the blacken chicken), yummy chicken parm and hamburgers that were better than Five Guys that my kids enjoyed. My kids were worried about the wait, but the food came out in less than 15 minutes/ a normal wait time, who would have ever thought especially after a hard day at skiing. It's worth the 15 minute drive from Seven Springs and all at reasonable prices too. Just be there before 9pm to eat dinner! Enjoy!

Whoy G.

Yelp
Very nice. Ambience is knotty pine, but the service was friendly and quick. Food was tasty and well done. A very good value for the money

Kathy D.

Yelp
An lovely restaurant in our area! Nice atmosphere and Food is great for the price and service has always been excellent. Have been frequenting this restaurant for many years and have always been satisfied!

Yelp
Considered 4 but, didn't want to push it. I had the old bay shrimp which was ok. Wife had wings and a Caesar salad and not thrilled with either. Service was great and atmosphere is nice and clean. Prices are much lower then where we live. Caesar, shrimp, and mushrooms for $15 is great.
