I am not often generous with praise, but I just can’t help myself. I am traveling and happened to be in Somerset, PA. I had scoped out the local restaurants, and thought I had the best one on my list. I was WRONG.
When we got to our hotel, the desk staff handed me a business card with a discount on it. I like discounts, but the restaurant had not made the cut in my research. The staff then went on about how great the place is.
When I travel, I take recommendations from locals VERY seriously. So I redid my research on the place.
The menu was good despite the graphics on the website. I decided to make them a centerpiece of my meal plans.
The Pine Grill looks Plain on the outside and that was a misrepresentation. We walked into what came across as e wood-paneled cabin with rustic decor. That was just the first impression.
Starting with the appetizers: We got some onion rings (something I use for comparison from one restaurant to another). I also ordered a house specialty soup, Chicken Gnocchi. Never heard of it but it sounded great on a cool day. I am not usually a salad fan unless it is a bar and I can choose the contents, but it was excellent. Needed cheese and croutons, but still excellent.
Main course? STEAKS and Baked POTATOES!
I have had MANY “loaded” potatoes, but I have never gotten bacon “slivers” (not bits, not chunks) on a potation. NUMMMM!
Sue got the Ribeye and I got the Strip. Both steaks were not only cooked to perfection, but the marbling, and the just a smidge of fat for flavor. Mine melted in my mouth!
Desert: Pumpkin Ice cream. Simple, Basic, Seasonal. The perfect end to a fantastic meal. Our server, Maddie was a tad inexperienced, but she was attentive.
After the meal, we spoke with the owner, Mark. I told him that the business card/coupon was brilliant! Moreso that the hotel staff had been there and recommended them!
I thought the website needed work and Mark said they are doing a total redesign focused on the food and the interior. I mentioned that I thought the meal needed table bread. He said that was supposed to be offered. Our rookie server had not learned the routine. He gave us rolls to go! Mark said he has owned this place for 38 years. IT SHOWED!
Overall, a fantastic experience. If you are in Somerset? Make this place a top priority!
