"A year and a half after a near-fatal battle with Covid-19 and 40 days on a ventilator, owner Jimmy Khan will reopen his perennial favorite Pines of Florence in Arlington’s Cherrydale neighborhood on Saturday, November 20. The new rendition of the Southern Italian eatery takes over the former Portobellos spot, which closed at the end of September after nearly 20 years in business." - Stephanie Carter

Wonderful place. We found this by accident and will definitely come back! The food was delicious and their signature pink sauce is really delicious and we loved the bread pudding! Don’t let the outside fool you. It’s very nice inside! The service was incredible and Navi is very knowledgeable. I forgot to take pictures of the food because we just started eating. The room looks empty because we came just before closing.

If you're looking for delicious and authentic (2nd-generation!) Italian-American food, Pines of Florence is the place to be! Our family recently enjoyed a fantastic lunch here, and we can't recommend it enough. We were especially impressed with the Baked Salmon with Lemon Butter Sauce served with grilled veggies & pasta and the Zuppa De Pesce served with White Sauce. Beyond the food, the service was warm and welcoming, making the whole experience even better. Don't miss out on this Arlington gem! Thank you, Pines of Florence, for the wonderful lunch our family enjoyed today! * Michael & Dessa, and Azares Family

One of the best Italian pastas I’ve had. Cooked al dente to perfection, slow cooked sauces and fresh vegetables and protein, the balance in the plate is spot on. Cozy place with a family atmosphere.

Google
Second time trying them and the recipe remains amazing! This is real authentic Italian food. Customer service is always 100% each time I’ve visited the restaurant and food is fresh. Highly recommend!

Google
Loved this Italian eatery - quaint place with long history and locally connected. The artist playing guitar was a retired local playing classic and interacted really well with the crowd. The food is good and the service is great too, loved the overall experience.

Google
Terrific experience at Pines of Florence and best Italian food I've had since living in Vicenza (near Venice) in 2018. All the items we ordered (attached photos) were fantastic and came out super fresh. Friendly staff and atmosphere reminded me of some of the little restaurants you'll find in Italian cities. Ample parking behind restaurant and price is very good. Highly recommend!

Google
We have gone to this restaurant since it first opened in 1989, but we were unaware that it had reopened on Pollard Street, at the corner with Langston Highway. We enjoyed it in at least three locations and it recently popped up on our radar. You don't have to spend as much as we did: It is fairly-priced, but we went all out for Mother's Day, and had a glorious time! The branzino was delicate and perfectly seasoned and served with tasty pasta and a generous helping of an assortment of fresh vegetables. The white pizza was as good as I've had anywhere. My husband commented that the tiramisu was the best he'd had, and I agree. It was light, not too sweet, and very tasty. I ordered two glasses of chardonnay. I don't usually drink wine nor two alcoholic drinks of anything, but it was wonderful. We look forward to returning soon.

Google
Best Italian food in all of Arlington! This place is a hidden gem! They even do takeout! I’ve ordered many times from Pines of Florence and every time the dishes come out perfect! Quick takeout service. I’ve tried pretty much everything on the menu and my top picks are the Fettuccine Alfredo, Tortellini a la Panna, and the Penne Tetrazzini. I can not stress enough how good this place is! Everything about the homey feel of the restaurant to the delicious food, it is a must try even if you don’t live in the area. Do yourself a favor and try it at least once, you can thank me later.

Yelp
What a hidden gem this place is!! It's in an unassuming shopping center and the parking was plentiful and free. We were greeted by the server and sat right away. The restaurant was very homey and cute. I loved the art pieces on the walls, painted by local artists. The server gave us an overview of what dishes were popular and brought us bread. We ordered the calamari for an appetizer! It was delicious: crispy and tender. For mains, my husband ordered the linguine Florence, the namesake dish! He said it was fantastic. I had the eggplant parm, which I enjoyed very much as well. The food was all excellent and very reasonably priced. Our server was also very attentive and kind. Service was pretty quick! We are looking forward to coming back

Yelp
We were so glad to have found this gem in Arlington. This beats out the other Italian spots we've tried nearby. It's homey, delicious, and attentive. I ordered a to-go via their website which had some % discount. It was easy to do so. What I was most impressed with was that I put a note in the Chicken Piccata order requesting the linguine to be the Aglio Olio and that I'd be willing to pay extra - they did it perfectly without charging more. Usually when I request in the notes, restaurants don't notice/meet the requests. They went above and beyond here and the staff were very nice when I picked up. Must order: - Fettuccine Alfredo. We got the shrimps and it was SPECTACULAR. We agreed that this was the best Alfredo we've had - the most perfect blend of creaminess and well seasoning. We added cajun seasoning and red peppers on our own and that was just the cherry on top. - Tiramisu. You can tell they've made this in house (well we hope so!). The coffee flavor came through in a great way. It hit the spot after all the carbs. Good: Chicken Piccata. This was delicious, had great flavors, and executed well. No complaints. Pass: Clam Pasta. I am always a clam pasta type of person and I must say, this one didn't do it for me. The sauce was not as light/acidic as I would've liked. There is a lot of flavor but I wish I went for a red sauce instead - perhaps that would've been better! We can't wait to be back and try other dishes.

Yelp
I visited Pines of Florence after an Uber driver recommended it, and I'm glad I did! It's a smaller, hidden gem in Arlington with a cozy, welcoming vibe. The service was outstanding--the waiter, who I believe is also the owner, was incredibly attentive and helpful throughout our meal. The food was good; my entree was a bit on the bland side but still filling. This spot is perfect for a date night or a casual get-together with friends. The prices were reasonable, and I'd definitely return!

Yelp
Everything needs improvement. Do not know where to start. Bad, really bad. Got sick from the dish I had. Stay home. Save your time and money.

Riley G.

Yelp
I just moved close to here and was looking for some walkable spots. I came across Pines of Florence after reading so many reviews raving about it. I got the seafood pasta which the some of the best shrimp I have ever had. As well as my boyfriend ordered the chicken parm. We both had so much food we were able to bring the rest home. We also started with the calamari that was the perfect amount of crispy. Everything was very nicely priced. The only thing we would do differently is get a different bottle of wine, we felt it was a little too sweet. But service and food was fantastic, definitely come check it out

David C.

Yelp
My daughter loves the pesto pasta here so we are becoming quite the regular for our family. The other pastas, we've tried are pretty good as well, although I prefer a little more sauce on my meat sauce pasta. The only down point for me was the powdered cheese on the Caesar salad

Christina M.

Yelp
This is a really cute, cozy, red sauce Italian joint. I've picked up takeout from here several times, and every time I walk in, the atmosphere feels so nice- it feels like the kind of classic neighborhood restaurant that can be hard to find these days. The chicken parm sub is very good; we didn't love the meatball sub as much (the meat was very spiced and had a more unusual flavor). Both came with fries for $10 when ordering online for lunch- can't beat that! We also got cheese ravioli, which was straightforward but tasty, and chicken francese, which was also very good. Nothing here is reinventing the wheel, but for good old fashioned Italian food, that's exactly what you want. If you order through their website for pickup, they offer a 10% discount. Looking forward to coming back to dine in!

Bonnie M.

Yelp
A friend had recommended this place and it did not disappoint. One of the best Italian places we have found in this area.

Linda R.

Yelp
Pines of Florence feels as if you are in your families kitchen due to the fact that the staff is always so welcoming and hospitable. The food is consistently delicious. Sterling service and delicious food.

Farhan C.

Yelp
I came to Pines of Florence over the weekend and had a phenomenal experience. It's a very chic hole in the wall. The food was phenomenal. I ordered the veal parmigiana and meat lasagna and I was impressed with the taste. The service was great and had an opportunity to chat with the owner who is so passionate about his food. Would definitely come by again.

Sarah P.

Yelp
We ordered take out. It wasn't bad but also want anything great. The pasta fagioli was super salty, we couldn't even eat it and ended up tossing it out. The sauce was pretty good on pasta though. Overall it was okay. This was take out and not sure if that changes anything. I just don't think I would order from here again. Though may try in person to see the difference.

Steph T.

Yelp
Well done: - Great service - Offers wheat pasta and gluten-free options (such as cauliflower dough for pizza) - Offers outdoor seating during nice weather - Tried the pistachio cake that was light and fluffy - Clean and tidy The restaurant is smaller than others, but is off the beaten path in Arlington, VA, so I recommend trying. The menu has a lot of options, but is meat- and seafood-heavy. One suggestion for the restaurant: Have a section on the menu that consolidates your vegetarian dishes. There are vegetarian options, but they are spread out across the menu and not in one section.

D E.

Yelp
I really was hoping to find a decent Italian place but sorry this isn't it. My husband ordered a beer and they gave him the non alcoholic (attention to detail). I had chicken parm (do not recommend) and the pasta was so watery my chicken was mushy as a result. The place had lots of families so maybe good for that. I don't plan to head back.

cheryl h.

Yelp
This is classic Italian food at its BEST! The Chicken Francaise is amazing, best white wine sauce. I order it over broccoli to curb the carbs. Absolutely delicious! The Chicken Nancy, Cacciatori, Tortolani, and Pizza are also great choices! You will not be disappointed! Sooooooooooo Good!

Emily S.

Yelp
Our server was extremely attentive, providing knowledge of their top sellers and personal recommendations! Our food was hot and delicious, and the addition of live music made it a perfect date night! 10/10 recommend Pines of Florence

Kostas K.

Yelp
This has to the best Italian food in Arlington and has been for the past 30 years! Service is outstanding ambiance incredible

Sheri W.

Yelp
I love supporting local restaurants and Pines deserves the good reviews. The food (especially the chicken parmigiana) was excellent and service could not have been better. The only drawback is no cocktails or after dinner drinks (I enjoy Sambuca after a great Italian meal). The decor is casual and comfortable.

Dylan G.

Yelp
So surprisingly excellent!! A tiny place but the food was really good!! Great service too! Definitely go!!

Dennis M.

Yelp
So I had a job assignment in DC area but I stayed at a Air BnB in Arlington and I went to Pines of Florence for dinner the first night I was in town and the owner and the staff were so appreciative and attentive that I made this my kitchen away from home. I tried a different dish each dinner and was always pleased with the choices I made. Thanks for a great experience. Stop in and support your local businesses.

Waverly Hills L.

Yelp
Still fabulous. Excellent service, good food and a neighborhood classic. Love this place!

Johnathan B.

Yelp
The food was excellent. Everything I ordered had a perfect balance of authentic Italian flavor. The service was great. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable about the food and the area. The atmosphere was very warm and welcoming. Pines of Florence is a hidden gem in the DC Area!

Mike F.

Yelp
One of the best Italian spots in Arlington. Reminded me of home. The manicotti was delicious. Staff and owner very friendly. Inside was clean and aesthetically pleasing. Great for a date or large group

Georgina W.

Yelp
Ordered takeout from here and got the eggplant Parmesan, the manni Cotte and the calamari. Really loved the manni cotte and we very thing was a good portion size. I need to go back in person to try the calamari again because the humidity from the take out container had made them soggy. The short interactions I had with staff were pleasant and they are definitely a small business I'd like to support again The place is a cozy smaller restaurant perfect for a quiet dinner Funnily enough I heard about this place from an Uber driver I've had multiple times who raves about the owner who is a family member and how great the food is here. Glad I got to check it out!!

Jonathan X.

Yelp
The food was OK, nothing really to write home about. Cold sliced bread. The fettuccine Alfredo was tasty, the chicken was a little tough, think it may have been grilled. There's a sign that says you may be charged a 20% surcharge, but when we got the bill, there was a mandatory 20% tip already added. I really don't like that, and for that reason alone, I will never come back to this restaurant. If you roll, the service was decent, nothing really, to write home about, the menu is pretty expensive, and so all in all it was an OK meal. However, the sneaky mandatory tip ruined it. My waiter did not quite reach 20% of value.

Jeff D.

Yelp
My husband and I really intended to just duck in somewhere for a quick meal after a long day roaming around D.C. this past weekend. We found the Pines of Florence near our hotel in Arlington and were very glad we did. The entire staff was warm and welcoming, the house Chianti was surprisingly good, but it was the food that impressed us most. This was the real deal. We spent a couple of weeks earlier this year eating our way through Tuscany. I think we both came away from Pines of Florence feeling like we'd just had Italian food as good as any we'd had during our travels.

Sanjana N.

Yelp
Really great food at this tucked away Italian restaurant. Fast service and nice ambiance.

Hannah M.

Yelp
We've been here a couple times and it never disappoints. Between the delicious food and great customer service, it's the perfect spot for a low-key, homey meal.

John D.

Yelp
Recently stopped in for dinner before a show at the Kennedy Center. We had found this place on Yelp and looked forward to checking it out after reading a number of positive reviews. We weren't disappointed. From the time we arrived until the time we left the service was friendly and attentive. Entering the restaurant felt like entering someone's home, and we were treated as guests of the family. The waiter (Jimmy?) was extremely engaging and took time to explain the menu to us, and to highlight some of the house specialities (get anything with pink sauce or the chicken francese and you won't be disappointed). Complementary bread was soft and thick. Unfortunately we were a bit time constrained and didn't have a chance to try appetizers, wine, or desert, but we will definitely return.

Marianela P.

Yelp
First visit to this restaurant. Pietanza is always so crowded. In addition to the food being delicious, the service was fantastic. Clean, cozy, and inviting atmosphere. Complimentary bread with Italian food is on point. Would definitely go back!

John S.

Yelp
Great old-school family owned Italian Restaurant. Service was good the owner did a nice stop-and-chat

S J.

Yelp
The food was OK. The service was pretty good. I've had better Italian food elsewhere. I'm not planning to go back.

Chris H.

Yelp
Wonderful Italian food. They have the best Veal Francese in the Washington metro area.

Catherine M.

Yelp
A small local spot that was packed on a Friday, we finally got to try this spot for takeout. I highly recommend coming early on a Friday night to get a table (theres not bar area) but there is also a small outdoor seating area. We got the pasta fagioli soup and the house salad, both really great options to start with and the house salad is very large. The soup was great too, but was confused on the two different types of noodle in the bowl. The mains we ordered were the chicken marsala and the eggplant parm. The portions are HUGE, easily enough for two meals. The eggplant parm was perfect, with so much sauce and cheese and every bite was perfect. The sided of linguine was great as well, very fresh tasting. The chicken marsala was great but we would have loved it to be even saucier. The only "complaint" we have was that the bread (which was free) was just ok- nothing fancy. Definitely on our list to come back here many many times!

C K.

Yelp
Favorite local Italian spot and perfect for mid-week takeout. The food is always delicious and fresh. The hospitality is awesome too. One night, we called way too late--right as the kitchen was closing. (Not cool I know, we didn't realize how late it was until we were ordering...) They went above and beyond to make our dishes anyway. This is the sort of place where you order your favorite classic Italian/Italian-American dish and it will be awesome. My go-to is the chicken piccata. The chicken is fork-tender and the sauce is perfectly balanced--lemony, savory, tasty. And their pasta is fresh and al dente. My husband loves their red sauce, especially over chicken parm or spaghetti with meatballs. Garlic Bread: It's a buttery, delicious must-have. We get takeout from here often and the only off dish we've had is the soup. May be ok in-person, but skip for delivery. We had to throw out both the minestrone and pasta fagioli, on different days/orders. Both had a strong chemical taste/smell. And both times, the soup arrived pipping hot and the plastic container it's delivered in was melted and leaking. We wondered if the plastic container was what we were tasting? Until they get a better soup container, just skip it for take-out, there are so many other delicious options. But don't skip the spumoni (ice cream bomb). It was my favorite treat as a kid and their version is fantastic.

Lisa G.

Yelp
My partner likes Italian/pasta and this place had great reviews so I was excited to have dinner here with her on Saturday. We went in kind of early, around 4:30pm, so we had the place to ourselves for a bit. We ordered the stuffed salmon and stuffed shrimp specials, a lemonade and tiramisu for desert. Everythig was delicious and the service was excellent. Got bae the Fettucine Florence to go for lunch and she loved it. She says we will be going back for all the other dishes she didn't get to try but was eyeing.

Roland H.

Yelp
Moving our daughter to Arlington and looked for something close with good reviews and found it! What a great spot! Very cute, friendly service and excellent food. My Osso Bucco was tender and flavorful, my wife really enjoyed her baked Ziti and my daughter's chicken Piccata was excellent. The Caprese salad and Seafood Fritto Misto appetizers were spot on and the Tiramisu was one of the best I've had - very light and fluffy! We did find a couple bottles of wine that were decent but a bigger selection would be nice; I would have happily paid more. An acoustic guitar player was a nice touch. We WILL be back next time we come to visit.

Daniel B.

Yelp
A great tradition continues. My family started going to the lineage of this restaurant in the 80's when it was in courthouse. Then we followed to Virginia square and now to the new location. Solid Italian meal! Very true to the old locations (at least based on our memories)! I look forward to going back again.

Ailun H.

Yelp
Overall, a 4.5/5, but will round up to a 5/5 for the good service and experience. Note: I'm not well-versed with Italian food so take this review with a grain of salt. I came here with a bigger group of people for lunch on Sunday. The server did a great job to make sure we were comfortable (with enough water and bread). The bread wasn't amazing, but hey, it's complimentary. The food also came out within a reasonable time given our bigger group (but we were also the only ones in the restaurant at that time). I got the Chicken Marsala ($16) which was pretty delicious! I liked that they gave a good amount of chicken breast, which soaked up the marsala sauce well and wasn't dry/over-cooked. The sauce itself was rich and flavorful, but didn't feel too heavy or overwhelming. It was sweet from the marsala wine and had depth. The pasta (made fresh in the morning?) was better than any American Italian restaurant chains I've had, but nothing amazing or special. It tasted good with the sauce and chicken! Loved the mushrooms here, but I wish they were more generous with the amount they gave. The portion size was pretty big here, too! My friends all ordered either the linguini a la carbonara pollo or linguini florence, which they were all satisfied by. I tried a bit of the florence and thought the sauce was flavorful!

Tori S.

Yelp
This place has an authentic small-business charm that I've been missing since moving to Arlington. It reminds me of the restaurants that I frequented when living in less populated parts of Virginia: good food, good service, and kitschy decor that looks like it's been hung in the same place for decades. I particularly enjoyed the addition of local art for sale on the walls - it was beautiful! Overall, I had a lovely dinner without breaking the bank! The man waiting on us even offered to wrap our to go Tiramisu differently depending on if we were going to enjoy it sooner or tomorrow. Great service!

Angela D.

Yelp
Good hole in the wall Italian spot in Arlington! I thought the staff was extremely kind and always checked in to make sure we had everything we needed. And it seemed like the manager took the time to ensure everyone was taken care of. Everything is pretty well priced for the large portion of food you get. We ordered the calamari (which tasted fresh!), lamb shank, and fettuccine Alfredo - it was all delicious. The house white wine is good, as well. This is a great family friendly restaurant!

Dalal M.

Yelp
Great comfort Italian food, warm atmosphere and friendly service. Most recently we ordered chicken francese and eggplant parmesan. Delicious. Have been there several times, it's a great go-to spot in North Arlington.

Justina F.

Yelp
We have lived in the neighborhood for years, but never stopped by this little restaurant. I had a hankering for veal parm and thought, why not? SO GLAD I DID! This place has WONDERFUL food, excellent and friendly service, and is now our new favorite place for Italian food. Give Pines a try! You won't be disappointed!

Scott W.

Yelp
A pretty decent Italian restaurant, there's adequate parking outside. Upon entering we were seated immediately by the waiter, who was very friendly and polite. The inside is very casual, but more importantly, the food is pretty good. We tried the chicken cacciatore, chicken piccata, chicken parmigiana, and linguini ascuita (which I've never had before). All were good. While I have other favorites, I would would still eat here again.

Michael D.

Yelp
Wow!! Great food and great service. We found this place while search on yelp and what a great pick. We had little to no wait and they accommodate our group of 7. The staff was super friendly and made this a wonderful experience. Thank you.

Roshan A.

Yelp
My daughter and I just went here for dinner tonight and we will definitely be returning. The service is excellent and despite it looks like on the outside, it has wonderfully homelike feel inside. I ordered the flounder. They have stuffed flounder on the menu but they were happy to make it just the filets for me. The flounder came in a lemony garlic sauce, which actually went into the linguini and the vegetables that came with it. My daughter thought the vegetables with lemon/garlic sauce was "unreasonably good." She was very happy with her cheese ravioli. The owner happened to be there, and he was very friendly and affable. I had driven by regularly, but they put a new sign out that caught my attention. This place is definitely a hidden gem for Arlington and I imagine it will only grow more popular.

Dany A.

Yelp
Pines of Florence has been making great Italian food since the 1980s in Arlington.....everyone that works there is awesome, food is plentiful and very well priced.....visited this location several times now...tried the lasagna, fried seafood/zucchini app, cream sauce seafood pasta, meatball pasta and was really impressed....definitely coming back to try the rest of the menu...it's become a family favorite...highly recommend!!

Nicky D.

Yelp
This is a local favorite, hidden in a tiny shopping center. I go straight for the house made pasta, like Linguini Carbonara or Spinach Ravioli. Check the daily specials which often feature fresh fish. The service is so friendly you feel like you're in someone's home. It's going to be your new favorite!

May D.

Yelp
Like family! Very cozy and perfect for any occasion! Service is also great! Food portions are big for a very good price.

Thomas T.

Yelp
My Italian family of 10 was extremely pleased with all aspects of this restaurant -- service, time to wait, ambiance, appetizers, entrees, desserts, and coffee. The chef has 35 years of experience, and everything was cooked to perfection. We each got something quite different, and every meal was well done. You can tell that each meal was hand-crafted with great attention to detail. I sincerely hope everyone goes to visit this restaurant. It's tough to get a high quality, home cooked Italian meal, but I would highly recommend everyone gets that meal here.
