On the Grid : Pio Pio

"Enjoy family-style portions of perfectly seasoned rotisserie chicken at this popular Peruvian chain. Start with the ceviche -- zippy and fresh. Move on to the gigantic Jalea seafood platter—fried to crispy goodness. The main event here is the chicken which is served with classic Peruvian sides of rice and beans, fried yuca and salchipapas. Enjoy it with a strong Pisco Sour and douse everything in their addictive aji verde sauce — a mix of cilantro, jalapeno, lime, garlic and mayonnaise. The cavernous space with floor to ceiling windows is great for large groups and watching the local nightlife. The owner of Pio Pio is steadily building an empire along this stretch of Northern Boulevard with Juanitas, Amaru Pisco Bar and Pio To Go." - Diane Shaw

Pio Pio Review - Upper East Side - New York - The Infatuation

"Pio Pio serves some of our favorite roast chicken in the entire city. For $10, you get half a juicy rotisserie chicken and a side of slightly spicy Peruvian green sauce. You’ll notice that there’s a lot of literature here about someone named Mama Juanita - the person who the chicken is named after. Try her namesake bird, and you’ll understand why we often list her as our emergency contact." - Hannah Albertine

Pio Pio Review - Hell's Kitchen - New York - The Infatuation

"Along with Julia Child and The Colonel, there aren’t many people in the world of chicken that we’d like to meet as much as Mama Juanita, whose name is all over the Pio Pio menu. Her namesake chicken, which is the focus at all eight locations, is better than almost any rotisserie-style bird in the city. For $10, you get a half chicken with juicy meat and a side of spicy Peruvian green sauce that balances out the sweetness of the skin. In case you want to go down the very wise path of chasing chicken with more chicken, you should get the empanadas de pollo, which are stuffed with a shredded version of Mama Juanita’s chicken." - Matt Tervooren

The food is served family style. The fried calamari to me was over cooked, the ceviche could have been served more. Not enough ingredients in the ceviche. We had the $74. Deal which was whole chicken, salad, 1 scoop of yellow rice with beans. We were a group of 6 that scoop of rice was not enough especially for the price they charge also comes with french fries and sausages. So we ordered more rice and beans. The fried yucca was delicious with that green sauce. I had the red sangria but was told the white sangria taste better. The staff were very nice, attentive and quick to serve us.

Great experience for Mothers Day brunch. Service, food and sangria were delicious and very enjoyable. Everything we had from ceviche mixto and other dishes were 10/10. Highly recommend the sangria, one of the best I’ve ever had. We got the pitcher, good amount and refreshing. This is walk in only, recommend going early ( as soon as they open) for a good table on weekends. Great place over all, good for family events or special occasions. Spacious also, tables are apart. Certainly will be returning soon.

I’ve been going to this restaurant for close to 20 yrs and it never disappoints . The food is fresh and tasty and the service is incredible.

Google
Pio Pio offers some of the most delicious Peruvian food I've ever had! The quality of everything was exceptional, absolutely incredible, I have nothing bad to say about the food. On the downside, the service is a bit slow due to how busy it gets, and the desserts could be just as outstanding as the main dishes. The prices are a bit high, but it’s definitely worth it for a special treat. Highly recommended for anyone craving amazing Peruvian cuisine!

Google
This place is probably one of the best if not the best for Peruvian food! I have been coming here for many many years and I’ll say that the food is extremely consistent. We always get the matador which is a lot of food but for the price and what you get from they one order, it’s well worth it! Overall value is amazing. The ambience is nice but I wouldn’t say it’s romantic or intimate! Love this restaurant

Google
Looking for the ultimate Peruvian rotisserie chicken experience? Look no further! This spot is a gem for chicken lovers, offering a twist on the classic dish that will exceed your expectations. Even if you're used to having rotisserie chicken at home, the flavor and quality here will blow you away. Personally, I'm not one to usually order chicken when dining out, but I couldn't resist, and wow, it was hands down the best chicken I've ever tasted. And the ceviche micro? Absolutely delightful! Now, onto the service. While the waitstaff presence is abundant, there's room for improvement in their attentiveness. But fear not, the lively atmosphere with live music adds to the fun, although it can get a tad loud if you're seated too close to the band. Pro tip: If you're aiming for a cozy conversation, opt for a table farther away from the music. Just a heads up, this place tends to cater to larger groups, so it's wise to make reservations in advance. Get ready to indulge in fantastic food and vibrant ambiance!

Google
Always love this place. One of my favorites. The food is always on point! The Matador dinner is my fantastic. Drinks are great but still the food is worth the trip. I go here every chance I get when in Queens. Atmosphere is a nice vibe. Parking sometimes difficult so leave a few extra minutes for that.

Yelp
Boy I haven't been here in ages! We had an event here on Sunday for my mom's best friend's church and it was perfect. Honestly it worked out so well I might consider having my baby's first birthday here. The event was held at their private hall next to their restaurant. For $25 we got a 1/4 chicken, salad, French fries and fried rice. The meal came with a glass of sangria or an Inca cola. The chicken was good; well seasoned and juicy. The rice was good and the fries weren't frozen. It was a good size plate for $25. The service was good, we even had a pisco sour at $15 a glass. It had enough liquor that you didn't need another glass. I am definitely thinking about having my baby's birthday here. I am glad it worked out and the music was top notch. See you soon Pio Pio!

Yelp
Everything was good. I like how big and spacious this place is ,it has room for every occasion .Food and Service was great too

Yelp
I used to come here all the time with friends and family we just loved it so much. Recently I thought I would circle back to allow my daughter to have the experience of good chicken and that amazing green sauce. We came for lunch so the parking wasn't very bad and it was not crowded at all. We ordered a meal with everything but the portions were ridiculously small. The rice alone was a portion for 1 person. The price has changed since we last have come the sangria pitcher was so expensive also. The sangria was great as always but the food not so much. My boyfriend made it seem like there's a difference between lunch and dinner however I'm siding with what I was given and it was not worth the $ at all.

Yelp
Love love the food! Salchipapas are my complete fav and pio pio does it well. Have been here a couple times and will continue to do so. :)

Yelp
Im a pío pío addict. I love it! I can't get enough of the salsa verde and the saffron rice, and the beans, and the chicken and the lomo saltado and the lucuma ice cream. I just love it all.
google avatar

Victoria S.

Yelp
My friend and her family have been going here for years. I loved the empanada de pollo because it was very flakey and fresh! The sangria was probably the best I ever had to be honest. The arroz chaufa can be made with chicken or with chicken and shrimp. I opted for chicken only. The food is big portions so be prepared to have leftovers or share. The space a very large and the bathrooms are very clean. The music is a nice volume and they have nice tunes. The service is excellent! Highly recommend. It is a bit on the pricy side, but it is 100% worth it.

Yelp
I have been coming here for many years and have had mixed experiences. Their food has been good at times and a miss at others. My go to would usually be their whole chicken with order of maduros, salad and a glass of sangria. My aunt threw her husbands 50 birthday party in their private room and it was actually a great experience. The private room has its own bathroom which is great and convenient. The party room is very spacious and could easily hold 50 people or more. The service was great that night and the food was absolutely delicious. The jalea was well cooked and seasoned. Their whole chicken was juicy, their rice and beans were delicious and their salad was fresh. The only complaint I have is their sangria used to be much better; it was extremely sweet and very expensive for the jar.

Yelp
The portions given are huge, I really enjoyed the ceviche. My preference is typically to sit at the bar, the bartender was very friendly and made great recommendations. I would go back again.
google avatar

Jasleen K.

Yelp
The food was pretty good. I highly highly recommend the ceviche, which was absolutely my favorite piece as well as the dish in the middle, which I forget the name but the chicken was absolutely so tender. Everyone loves this place and I remember growing up everyone wanted to go here for a celebration. I haven't been here in years, but decided to give it a go again. Definitely recommend. I know they're known for their fish, as well as that middle plate that I mentioned. People love coming here to celebrate. I also got the Tres leches cake but that I did not like. It felt like it was left in an open refrigerator. It tasted very stale.
google avatar

Yelp
Food is only mediocre nowadays. More on the salty spectrum. Service is still OK. Ambience and seating area is outdated back to the 90's setting.
google avatar

Sandy D.

Yelp
Pio Pio was unfortunately not as good as I last remembered. The place was huge, with a lovely family ambiance to it on a weekend night. Pio Pio is big on celebrations, as I heard 4 birthday cheers that night. I shared the Matador Combo ($60), which was recommended for 4 people. Everything was honestly mediocre. Hot dogs and french fries were an odd combination and they were equally dry and bland. The same goes for the tostones, or fried plantains. There wasn't enough liquid to balance this meal out. The salad somewhat helped, but it's just salad. Juanita's Chicken is supposedly the highlight of this Combo, but it really wasn't. The chicken tasted good at first, but it's nothing special and it got salty. The combo felt like a ripoff for what it was. The workers also brought out cake to celebrate a special occasion, but that cake was a surprise $8 charge. There are plenty of restaurants that would do this on the house. The ambiance was beautiful and spacious, but the food was so very skippable.
google avatar

Yelp
It's always a great meal here that is inexpensive and very comforting. The chicken is the only thing you should eat here. It's cooked well and seasoned well.

Yelp
Loved it Every which way‼ Great place, very good food‼ Very clean‼ Friendly service by Miguel/Michael. Beautiful ambiance. A bit pricey, but worth every bite. Thoroughly enjoyed lunch on my day off...

Yelp
Great food and polite service. I love their chicken soup and avocado salad. All of their dishes are delicious.
google avatar

Steph G.

Yelp
Been here numerous times. Always delicious! They are very attentive and accommodating. We ordered empanadas and salchi papa to start. So good! We split the rotisserie chicken & lomo salta do for lunch. Such big portions & delicious. I love their salad! Can't wait to go back.

Yelp
A brutally honest review from a Peruvian... Honestly after today, no longer a fan. They have gone downhill since they've franchised all over. Food isn't made to order anymore so it doesn't come out as fresh. I was wondering why the food came out extremely fast, (5 min after appetizers), and that's because it appears it's all pre-made. Yuca frita - too big in size, very dry, not crispy and not hot. Causa - the avocado inside was oxidated (dark). Matador Combo - Juanita's chicken was solid in taste but lacked juiciness from what I remembered. Also kinda chewy in texture. Tostones were hard and too thick in width, dry. Salchipapas were ok. Rice and beans were 'meh' in flavor. Salad was drowned in dressing. For the price, you might as well go to a fine dining restaurant. (They've increased tremendously). This place is good for people that wanna give Peruvian food a try. As for myself, might as well call it Peruvian McDonalds. Reason for the two stars is because the sangria is unbeatable.

Yelp
I have always and will always have a special place in my heart for Pio pio. I absolutely love the chicken. One of the best ones. However, the Jalea has changed A LOT. I am not sure who is cooking it now but it needs to stop!! The prices have obviously increased but it's still so inexpensive for what other restaurants are charging. They have a private room downstairs for private parties. They have a band on Wednesdays. They have an outside section. It's spacious and the service is fast. I did a tik tok & IG video review: @jessiica0204 ! I do a lot of travel and food related content. Don't forget to follow me.

Yelp
We always pop in here when in the area. Large, spacious and tasty. We arrived Saturday evening around 7:30 and were pleasantly surprised to only wait about 5 minutes for our party of 7. We ordered two Matador Combos. Each combo includes a whole roasted chicken, salchipapas (fries and sliced hot dogs-sounds odd but oh-so yummy!) plantains (either tostones or maduros), delicious abundant salad and rice and beans. They aren't known for their rice and beans but all else is amazing! Best chicken around and the green sauce is one of a kind! Sangria and chicha moradas are a must!
google avatar

Laura P.

Yelp
My friend had her 49th birthday here! The restaurant was super fun and I will definitely be back. The salad to start was really good. The hot dogs were delicious and the chicken was so moist, it makes me want to try other things on their menu. The drinks were also made very well. I did think the sangria was too sweet.
google avatar

Katherine D.

Yelp
I came here to have dinner with my parents. We got the family style matador combo. There was a lot of food. The rice and beans were good the chicken is always amazing. The tostones didn't taste right they felt very thick and dry and the avocado salad which I normally love was chopped up so small that it was hard to pick up with the fork. The other sides were good though. We got the salchipapas and it was very fresh. The staff was helpful and didn't mind that i had ordered before the rest of my party showed up. Which was very nice since I didn't want them to wait more time for the food to show up after they have sat down.

Yelp
Great prices! Amazing food, never even needed to add salt to my ceviche! Plantains are 10/10, rice is rice & their chicken...it's honestly too bad you can't eat the bones too! Let me not even get started on their delicious garlic spicy green sauce! Delicious!

Yelp
A knock your socks off rock your socks off Peruvian chicken place. All Peruvian chicken places are great. My home city has one to die for. Technically, the Peruvian chicken itself at Pio Pio 2 is par for the course. What sends Pio Pio 2 to the stratosphere is their cilantro sauce. Everyone in South America does a cilantro sauce. No one else's cilantro sauce comes anywhere close to the quality of Pio Pio's. You could put Pio Pio's cilantro sauce on a running shoe, and the running shoe would taste good. What it does to a Peruvian chicken is off the charts. Add to this a killer garlic sauce for their fried yucca. Their avocado salad with shrimp and bean pate is to die for. Looking at the other tables, the seafood combos looked like they were to die for. And the drinks are potent potent potent. Altogether a fine place. They book a fine traditional Peruvian band to play on some nights. What's not to like?
google avatar

Jacqueline C.

Yelp
Amazing food ! The service was on point and fast our server paid attention to us loved that, love how clean and spacious the restaurant was. Also the area they are located was jumping music all up and down the strip many different spots I really enjoyed the area and restaurant but whatever you do DONT PARK IN THE RITE AID PARKING LOT YOU WILL GET TOWED
google avatar

Ryan R.

Yelp
The food here is so good but the service is so slow. This place is huge so it's great for big parties. The portions are big and reasonably priced. The menu is simple with combos and some alternate options. My family of 8 usually gets the matador combo and the jalea with a couple pitchers of sangria to wash it all down. They also have a patio area that's beautiful. I took off a star because even though the food is delicious, I often felt like I had to fight for the attention of the waitstaff. They would often forget about things I'd ask for so I'd have to ask again and again. Bring your patience!
google avatar

Enrique S.

Yelp
This has to be one of my favorite restaurants in the area. Great ceviche, jalea, roasted chicken. My only complaint is the music plays too loud, but everybody else seems happy with it. The service is top notch and quality.

Hannah G.

Yelp
Amazing food! I recommend getting the * Jaunitas chicken * Lomo saltado * Sangrias
google avatar

Shawnie J.

Yelp
Very nice ambiance, parking is a hit or miss, food was delicious especially the chicken and it came out so fast. Service was accommodating, good for date night
google avatar

Yelp
We back recently and the restaurants on Northern Blvd. In Jackson Heights Queens. It was just as lively and good as years past. The food was fresh and sangria tasty. Recommend
google avatar

Jesenia A.

Yelp
All the plates are delicious. The service was on point. The ambiance was fancy. They party room was so spacious and we ordered several dishes. Non disappointed us.
google avatar

Stephanie T.

Yelp
If you enjoy a Peruvian food with an American twist, then definitely visit Pio Pio. If you prefer authentic Peruvian food, head elsewhere. Although the food was good, it's not what I was expecting. The decor is nice and service was on point. Unfortunately, the only thing that ruined my experience is that they had a long line of people waiting so the door was left open for an extended period of time which created a cold draft. Everyone put on their coat to try to keep warm but still.
google avatar

Yana B.

Yelp
Totally raw fish in the ceviche. It looked like it was marinated for maybe 15 minutes before it was served. Opaque on the very outside it was visibly raw throughout and super fishy. Dangerous!
google avatar

Merci M.

Yelp
The garlic shrimp was great. The ambiance was nice for a quick date but the service a lacking a bit, especially since the plates are a hit over priced. My sister and I decided to share the plates and were given a small amount of rice. The quantity and quality, did not match the cost. We weren't even given separate serving plates until I asked. The sangria was strong and the actual entre was good enough to merit 3 stars. I've been to other pio pio and had a great time. I'll visit other locations next time.
google avatar

Farah F.

Yelp
Don't get the tostones to go. We got 2 orders and once we got home they were so hard they weren't edible. The Matador combo we got was really good which is why I'm giving it 3 stars.
google avatar

LaToya K.

Yelp
You can literally never go wrong with Pio Pio. The food is delicious and very reasonably priced. Their sangria is nice and strong. Their "new" location is large and even has a small amount of outdoor seating. The only issue is parking which is not easy any day or time.
google avatar

Arthur S.

Yelp
Called ahead for reservations but was told they don't really take them. However, they asked for my name and indicated they would help get us a table when we showed up as it was Mother's Day and we had a fairly large group of 6 people. Once we showed up i found the gentleman I spoke to and he indeed helped put us at the front of a very big line and got us a table in a few minutes. We had a great lunch, all the food and service was great. Chicken was juicy and all of the sides and salads were delicious. We have been many times over the years and highly recommend and will be back.
google avatar

Tara S.

Yelp
I cannot say enough things about this place. The food is always always always on point. I recently had my bridal shower there in their party room on the first level. It was spacious and clean. Bright! The staff were attentive. The guests loved the food. The DJ was popping. It was more than I could have ever imagined.
google avatar

Lily F.

Yelp
I love love love Pio Pio. Every location that I've been to has not failed to satisfy my Peruvian food craving. The ceviche was amazing, the empanadas were so good, the fried calamari was good as well. The lomo Saltado was perfect, delicious, and just amazing. The rotisserie chicken was also really good. You can't go wrong with yummy food. The service wasn't so great though, it was very hard to get the waiter's attention.
google avatar

Tae S.

Yelp
This place is great for groups and families. You can order a big chicken meal and share everything. This feeds the family sir friend group for a reasonable price. The lomo saltado was seasoned well and the fries crispy. The avocado salad had light dressing. My friends enjoyed the kitchen. The beans had a nice flavor not spicy. All in all a good mea and good time.
google avatar

Urszula P.

Yelp
Most of us know Pio Pio but I had never been to this location in Jackson Heights. It was huge! It allowed for real distancing. We ordered some classic things (avocado salad, lomo saltado, and ceviche). We were genuinely surprised how delicious all the dishes were. I feel like they put magic dressing into the salad leaves. Although we only ordered three dishes (one entree), they were very filling for three.

Marilyn S.

Yelp
The food was good but not "wow" The service was okay but not " wow". Came here for the first time and I have to say the sangria was delicious. The food however came out so quickly it seemed like it was pre cooked and not made fresh to order. The maduros were dry and hard. The rice was good but not hot enough. The chicken was yummy and juicy. The avocado and tomatoes were good. The service was mediocre. I think the prices are ridiculous. 50$ for a pitcher of sangria? Probably not coming back to this place.
google avatar

Patrick R.

Yelp
Pio Pio, where do I begin. The first Pio Pio is located on Woodhaven blvd. It has about 4 tables, I've been going there since he opened. I would eat there about 3 or 4 times a week. The chicken is so moist and cooked thoroughly, we always got the matador combo, it's a whole chicken, with Rice and beans, sache papa's, Maduro, and allvacado salad. You will definitely leave dull. They have a great sangria, as well as beer and cocktails. I've been to every location, bothe in queens and the one in the bronx. The quality, and taste of food is the same in all locations. I crave it feom time to time, gotta have it and the mustard sauce is amazing with the chicken. We even take out catered orders for party's. I've been a customer of Pio Pio for about 30yrs now. And it never disappointed. Highly reccomend
google avatar

ManTat C.

Yelp
Great food but horrible service. We sat down and waited 15-20 for the waiter just for our drinks and another 10 minutes to take our food. Wasn't busy so I don't know if they were short staff
google avatar

Anna A.

Yelp
Pio pio did not disappoint the food was really good. I truly enjoyed the service and how everyone was quick and prompt. So polite and very giving when asking for anything. The ambiance is loud so expect that it's just a very loud place. I wish it was a little quieter you have to speak loudly to hear the other person I didn't give it 5 stars because the rice was undercooked a lot. But the flavors were good ! The rotisserie chicken the salad the red beans and sangrias did not disappoint. That's usually their staple is the chicken ! Enjoy check out the video for the spread of what we had

Yelp
Pio Pio in Queens one of the first one Peruvian Roasted Chicken Peruvian Style conquered in NYC. The owner brings the Peruvian taste to the Spanish and American people bringing one of the fast food Peruvian used to eat instead of Mc Donald burger.
google avatar

Sita P.

Yelp
One of my favorite restaurants and the best Peruvian food in NYC! I have been dining at this restaurant for over a decade, way before they expanded. I'm so happy they have locations throughout the city and expanded their menu beyond just chicken combos. They also have the best sangria & Peruvian green sauce. I always order the same thing, Matador combo which is a family style portion. Recently I ventured out and tried the lomo soltado, which is my new favorite dish. Try it! For appetizers you can't go wrong with the Palta Rellena Con Camarones.
google avatar

Arielle D.

Yelp
You can't go wrong with Pio Pio, they have about three locations in the city and a few in Queens. The food is consistent. I ordered the shrimp with yellow rice, avocado slices, sweet plantains, baked chicken and white sangria. The food was very flavorful and well seasoned, you can taste the saffron, fresh garlic and herbs. The secret is definitely in the sauce! The chicken is served with an amazing green Peruvian sauce that is finger-licking good.

Yelp
I came here to celebrate my bestfriends 30th bday on a Friday night & it went great! Their hostess was very understanding with our time changes and we had a great time. The restaurant wasn't packed that night and their customer service was great! The food tasted soo good and their sangria was a hit! Even their live mariachi and music was fun to jam out to. Even though this location doesn't serve steak with basil pasta (my fav meal) & they could have put more French fries inside their lomo dish I would definitely come here again.

Xeon Dynasty A.

Yelp
The food was ok. But it was pricey as you see in the picture all that was $158. We got a pitcher of sangria and it was just ice. On my opinion I don't recommend to eat there. Plus I placed an order of fries to go and I soon I placed the order the fries were next to me lol, I can say they gave the fries in 1 or 2 mint. But sadly when I got home the fries were black, uncooked, very disappointed. You can see clearly in the picture.
