The 42 Best Restaurants in Rome

"Piperno is pretty old-school in its décor—polished wood-paneled walls, platters full of fresh fruit, chandeliers—and that formality extends to the service. Ever-courteous staff, enrobed in white jackets and bowties, welcomes you to your table like you’re nobility. Start your meal with some oh-so-Roman fried potato croquettes and suppli, then head straight for a first course in the form of potato gnocchi in creamy fontina cheese, plus a seafood risotto for good measure. The mains game is all about seafood." - Maresa Manara

Everything about our experience at Piperno was perfect. We sat outside in the courtyard and the atmosphere was wonderful. The food was delicious and the service was impeccable. We were there for a special occasion and the hosts made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived and we were well looked after until the moment we left several hours later! When we return to Rome, we will be back. Thank you!

Google
Incredibile. If you visit Rome it's absolutely necessary also to visit the restaurant Piperno! Fantastic the carxofi a la giudia, and you can combine with other delicious proposals. Fantastic experience. Great.

Google
A rare gem and a true 10/10. We visited during a busy sunny lunch but chose to sit inside because the interiors are nothing short of cinematic. Everything is authentic and original which results in a time-travelling experience un-like many restaurants in the world. Because everyone else was outside there was nothing to indicate the modern resulting in the true fantasy of 1950s glamorous Rome. Please never change the interiors or add ugly modern features- it’s perfect just how it is ❤️ the owner was friendly and cool and all the waiters look sharp, elegant and professional in their white tuxedos and bow ties. My wine was one of the nicest I’ve had in years. Starter was tasty and unique and served on great plates. I’d love to see a few more vegetarian/ vegan options, fresh Italian salads or vegetable pasta sauces, otherwise I cannot fault this restaurant. Thank you!

Google
Outstanding. Wonderful food, great service.

Google
Fabulous established restaurant serving simple dishes beautifully. I first came here 15 years ago and remember how delicious the food was and even today, when so much time has gone by, it’s just as good as it was. Impeccable service and fabulous house wine.

Google
Very much stuck in time. Not touristy at all. The team was a mixed bag. Some with a very strong chip on their shoulders, and others very warm. The lady who came across as the owner was very gracious and helpful. It is a place one must go when you have a lot of time. Being very Italian the entire process moves ever so slowly. You are meant to have a leisurely time. No need to hurry. The food is good but not superlative. The atmosphere when sitting outside on a summer day is very nice.

Google
Really unfortunate experience here. We accidentally booked on Saturday for lunch, but thought it was on Sunday. So we came on Sunday excited - but when we arrived (after a 20 minute taxi to get there), the maître d gleefully told us he had cancelled our booking because we came on the wrong day. He then refused to let us eat there even thought we pleaded and said it was obviously a mistake! He was so horrible and shouted at us in front of all of his other guests. Horrid experience and really upsetting. Wouldn’t recommend.

Yelp
This is my second time eating here over the last 5 yrs. And I think the carbonara and carcofi is still my fav in Rome. Highly recommend it. A little hard to find because the taxi drops off on the main street and you have to meander around to find it. But don't give up. It's worth it.

Yelp
Classy, elegant, beautiful dining room when the weather is cool, and gorgeous to sit outside on the serene patio when it's warm. Excellent service in white jackets and black tie. We had the fried artichoke (of course), zucchini flower with mozzarella and anchovy, agnolotti stuffed with veal, succulent baby lamb chops and for dessert, a goblet of wild strawberries topped with a scoop of melting vanilla gelato - sublime!

This place is a MUST. Amazing food and service. Everything my family and I ordered was spot on. If you're visiting Rome and skipped this place then you are missing out. Piperno was recommended to me by numerous locals and I am glad the took their advice. I recommend: Jewish artichokes Fried zucchini blossom Lamb Fish wrapped in potatoes Berries and ice cream Pies

Yelp
Great food, great ambiance, great service. Love it. Sorry I can't go for dinner tonight. Perfect anytime.

Yelp
Beautiful restaurant in a secluded section of the Jewish section of Rome. I can't speak about the food because our reservation was not confirmed and we could not be seated. I CAN speak to the graciousness and friendliness of the the host who was very rude and condescending. We made reservations at the restaurant on the website, gave a credit card number to reserve but did not receive an email confirmation. The host looked for the reservation, said we cdid not have one and asked "How do you expect to be seated when you have no reservation?". We were basically dismissed as if we were beneath his attention. I'm not sure yet if the credit card was charged. We ended up at Yotvota, which was close by. Not as elegant, maybe the food didn't compare but so happy and friendly. I'll take that any day!

Yelp
Is a restaurant in the Jewish ghetto in Rome every thing is fresh fish especially fried artichokes are a must classic place great service so if you're in Rome it's a must

Yelp
Why didn't I believe the negative reviews below? We were there four years ago and had a good meal. Tonight's dinner for four was horrific. No need to elaborate. Take heed!

Yelp
Go here to try amazing Roman Jewish cuisine. We had rented a Vespa in Rome, and even with the Google navigation on the phone, this place was hard to find as it's in between alleys. Can't imagine coming here without a Vespa! I would recommend going here for the fritti (fried starters). I really went here to try the artichoke appetizer which is served "alla giudia." I took Katie parla and Fred Plotkin's advice (yes, I research a lot before embarking on a foodie trip anywhere in the world!) and ordered this appetizer. This "Jewish style" artichoke is deep fried whole, until golden brown, its outer leaves rendered crispy and light, and its heart sweet and delicate. It was so good, I felt I was in heaven.... Initially, the server was hinting that we should order one plate and share but I ended up ordering 2 plates for my husband and me and boy, was I glad! This was the one of the best things I've eaten in my life (and I've eaten a lot of things!). The artichoke is huge (and if you aren't greedy, you can share it with your date as it's pretty big) and fried crispy on the outside but oh so tender and soft from the inside. It was perfectly cooked and phenomenal! The rest of the food was pretty good but it's a bit on the pricey side. Our lunch cost us a little over 100 Euros (with one glass of wine, and 2 espressos)...Being Europe, it was good to realize that the tip was already part of the bill! The service was impeccable....5 stars for being friendly and attentive. Go here to try the fritti/fried starters, esp the artichokes when they are in season...overall, had a great time albeit a bit pricey lunch!

Yelp
Da Piperno is my favorite restaurant in Rome. Its located in the Jewish Ghetto and a charming place where u can have the entire Italian soul in the room and kitchen. I strongly recommend the appetizers. Theis fior di zucca is by far the best in the world and carcioffi alla giudia. But u fan definitely let the waiter guide you through whats best for the night! Its my number one place for the spaghetti alla carbonara (its so amazing u can not find anywhere else so good) the caccio e unto, vitela alla milanese if you are into meat. Whine list is not the best for ages but who cares if its summer u can dine outside in a Roman piazza and thank God to be there! Ots like to be ina Fellini movie! Enfoy! We deserve!

Yelp
When a call goes out to friends and family looking for recommendations for restaurants in Rome, Piperno tops the list of many. There is a reason for this. A quiet corner of the Jewish ghetto, white table cloth, great unobtrusive service and the famous artichoke, Jewish style. Delicious. We had the mixed appetizers--artichoke, rice balls, mozzarella...and then spaghetti vongole (clams) and fettuccini carbonara. Finished with tiny wild strawberries. Life is sweet.

Yelp
I made a reservation at Piperno prior to our trip primarily because it's one of the oldest restaurants in Rome and the reviews were good. We never got as far as the food. My maps app showed the location to be a 6 minute walk from our hotel so off we went. The restaurant is up a tiny side street that was hidden behind a building which kept fooling my GPS into thinking we were "there". After a couple of times around the block I finally stumbled on the place but alas we were now 15 minutes late. Nobody's fault but our own but here's where the fun starts: We enter the restaurant (yes, we are "dressed" for dinner) to find a few folks dining but there are empty tables as well. The maitre d (I guess ?) comes up to us and I say we had a reservation while apologizing for our tardiness stating we had become lost. He confirms our name and announces that he just "sold our table". Then he condescendingly/sarcastically says "You were lost eh ? Wait here and let me see what I can do." as he crosses to attend to another couple that had just entered. My wife and I look at each other with a "Who needs this vibe for openers ?" and so we just decide to bail. Who's ready to enjoy a meal filled with shame and condescension ? Not us.The food at Piperno could be off the charts but we can't tell you because the place needs an attitude adjustment.

Yelp
This is a classic old world style restaurant in the Jewish ghetto. It is tucked away on a quiet side street so not overrun with tourists, it was mostly locals the day we went. The fried artichoke is delicious and a must. We also had the spinach and ricotta ravioli which they list as a specialty, it had wonderful flavor. Be sure to make a reservation.

Yelp
Traditional Roman-Jewish cuisine and remarkable service are the perfect combination of an outstanding food experience. Carciofi alla giudia and selection of fried starters are the strong part of Piperno's menu, so good that you might want more of them once you had your main! Very attentive and welcoming service makes you feel very comfortable. Really a must go place while visiting or staying in Rome.

Yelp
Went to this restaurant in end of April and it was delicious! It is a tourist spot and there were a lot of tourists there however, it was also filled with locals. Pretty upscale place with some people dressing up and some who were very casual (like us). We ordered the fried sampler appetizers and it was so good! The fried artichoke was the highlight and I wished I had ordered more. I have had fried artichokes in other places in Rome but this was by far the best. It was perfectly fried, not dripping in oily, seasoned well and so fresh. The other fried cheese, zucchini flowers, etc. was equally delicious. We also ordered their seafood pasta and seafood risotto. This was so-so and the risotto was overly salty. But the main course of freshly grilled prawns more than made up for the poorly executed pasta and risotto. One of the downsides to this place is that the servers can be a bit snooty/cold if they know you are a tourists and not dressed as fancy. I didn't pay any mind since the food was excellent and we were mostly left alone. I would definitely recommend the place and would go back.

Yelp
This restaurant has better seating than many places in Rome. The service was also better and more attentive here. The expensive Jewish style fried artichokes are amazing and the best I have ever eaten. The spaghetti with clams was very good, however too many of the clam shells were broken into pieces and left in the spaghetti. I wondered why. The John Dorry fish filet was okay though I wouldn't get it again. It was my first time trying this fish so I am not sure what it is supposed to taste like but I didn't care much for how it was prepared/tasted. Definitely get the artichoke despite their prohibitive cost at two for 15 Euros!

Yelp
Very good. Food was great, service decent, a bit expensive, decor a bit dated. Get the Jewish-style artichokes if in season. 1 order gets you 2. Basically they cut the tops off, then fry them whole until crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Reeeaaalllly good. No dressing or seasoning is given or needed, it's just the artichoke. We went during artichoke season - not sure how good they are out of season. Had the spaghetti with clams. Very nice. Plenty of clams, although you might be picking out bits of shell. They may have used butter in their preparation, not sure if this is a sin in Italy, but it tasted good. We also had gnocchi alla fontina, which is listed as a house specialty. Gnocchi were light, it was piping hot, cheese in the right proportions. Whats not to like? We also had the sweetbreads. Sauce was nice, but I like my sweetbreads crispier on the outside and softer inside; these were a bit chewy. Service above average for tourists in Rome (i.e., actually somewhat helpful).

Yelp
Excellent food and great service. As others have noted, the Jewish artichokes are outstanding, and the linguine with clams and seafood risotto were also fantastic. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Being told "we are fully booked" when the place is literally empty, leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

Yelp
A delicious meal in an old-world style restaurant. Waiters were elegant, seafood was so great, before I could control myself, I actually said OMG out loud when taking the first bite of spaghetti and clams! The seafood was incredible and the fried artichoke, the local delicacy of the Jewish Quarter, was terrific. After hearing my exclamation, a man at the next table over said, "I'll have what she's having!"

Devon J.

Yelp
My husband and I are on our honeymoon and he's been wanting artichokes. After researching a few places and reading the reviews I chose this spot. Walking distance from our Air BnB I was really excited. It's 8:20pm by the time we arrive to the restaurant. We walk in to a COMPLETELY EMPTY dining room, a hostess who instantly gave us a glare, and about 5 waiters starring at the door we entered through. "Do you have a reservation? Well you can't eat if you don't have a reservation" By her rude demeanor, I asked "well what time are all your reservations for?" As I look at their completely empty dinning room. Her response, "ahhh about 8pm." Clearly she wasn't aware of the time or of the actual reservations she had coming in that evening. Yes, we are tourists so I'm sure our business meant little to them however, any restaurant/hostess with any common decency would have apologized for being booked that evening and offer their next available time and maybe even wish for us to try again. This is what the SERVICE industry is all about. Let's just say we will not be trying again based on the instant unpleasant experience. **and yes, I understand we did not have a reservation so it was our fault for that (although on our 12th day in Italy we have been to many places without a reservation and have done just fine) it's the "greeting" we were given that I have a problem with.

Elizabeth O.

Yelp
Best meal we had in a 10 day trip across Italy was here. The artichoke was great, and pasta carbonara was incredible! Service and atmosphere were also perfect. Very romantic setting with the outdoor dining.

Peter S.

Yelp
Some of the best carbonara that I had while in Rome, HOWEVER, I found the atmosphere to be fairly uncomfortable and stuffy while in the restaurant. I'm used to fairly high-end places in NYC, but maybe it's because I didn't speak Italian that I was shoved in a corner and stared at until I finished my meal. I was the youngest person in the restaurant by a factor of three....so one may possibly want to take this into consideration when booking a table. Also, it's quite difficult to find (in a back alley off the charted path) so be prepared to walk around for a bit (it's around a bend and up a steep hill.) Great food however...so I would recommend it given these caveats.

Kelly M.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I came here for our very last dinner in Italy, so with two weeks' worth of culinary pressure, we were blown away that this place delivered one of our favorite meals. The decor is traditional, the wait staff professional, and the atmosphere classic Italian. We were seated at a table in one of the back rooms that was quiet and private. To start, I had the gnocchi alla fontina and he had their Bresaola Della Casa. I could have stopped after the pasta but, alas, our second course was of beef sliced and arugula for me, Spaghetti Cacio e Unto for him, with a side of Jewish-style artichoke, which is how this restaurant came onto my radar. The artichokes live up to the hype, and I would go back to Rome just for this dish. We planned on skipping dessert, but were so intrigued by the menu item, "Fried Grandpa' Balls," that our waiter brought out a small order for us to share--I liked them, he didn't, but I also think he may have just had trouble getting over the name! The wine list was on the pricier side, but they offered more affordable bottles. To summarize, a great find off the beaten path serving traditional, delicious dishes for an enjoyable culinary experience. The meal verged on expensive, but we agreed it was money well spent, and a perfect end to the trip.
