3 Best Day Trips from Washington, D.C. | Condé Nast Traveler

"This breathtaking vineyard, set along Virginia's Monticello Wine Trail, overlooks the Blue Ridge Mountains and focuses on the varietals that Thomas Jefferson, America’s original winemaker, produced, including zesty Sauvignon Blancs, Blanc de Blancs, and barrel-fermented Chardonnays. But Pippin Hill's 16 wines span a variety of grapes and techniques; standouts include the mineral-forward Viognier and a classic Cabernet Sauvignon that's reminiscent of Bordeaux cuvées. Unlike some of the other vineyards in the region, Pippin Hill has a strong focus on food: the tasting room offers small plates to complement pours of wines, of course, but you’d be remiss to skip the Vintner’s Table, a group dining experience that features four courses (many with ingredients grown on-site) paired with Pippin Hill wines. If you don't have time for a full meal, note there are few things better than watching the sun set over the Blue Ridge Mountains with a glass of Viognier in hand." - Laura Ratliff, Kristen Schott

Looking for a special place we had not visited to celebrate my wife's birthday. Had heard of Pippin Hill and decided to visit. Not a bad decision. Not only were wines great, but the food, views, and hospitality were exceptional.

Google
We love Pippin Hill! We’ve visited several times and enjoyed flights, bottles, and sitting on the lawn. They also have a great chef-driven menu with a lovely covered veranda to enjoy your food and drinks. One of our favorite views in the area!

Google
Lovely visit to Pippin Hill today. Had 2 tasting flights and the Reserve Rose was a favorite. Chorizo with shishito peppers were a spectacular combo, and the tuna tostada was a must as well. Highly recommend the tasting room on a hot sunny day, the views are stunning.

Google
From the host, to Alex our friendly server, to the unique food and delicious wine, our experience was lovely. Crispy Brussels sprouts (with blue cheese-yum!) and the Chicken Schnitzel Sliders were favorite sharables. The Bundoran Blue is an excellent wine. The veranda view is grand.

Google
Beautiful panoramic views. Very laid back, relaxing atmosphere. Superior service, Jimmy P. was phenomenal. Definitely a five star meal. Farm to table and tapas style. The wines are what I expect from a Virginia winery, subtle and smooth. If you have just enough time to visit one winery in the Charlottesville area, this place is my recommendation.

Google
Great winery to visit. I highly recommend booking a veranda table and ordering some of their amazing food. Overall this was a great experience.

Google
Went here once and we had fun with their wines and food. The area was huge and plenty to sit around. It was a good day, with good food and good people.

Emily Turner (Lippincott)

Google
Great food and wine options, we ended up taking a bottle of their Petit Verdot home. We sat inside because it was cold and rainy, but honestly they have so many heaters it was just as cozy on the covered veranda as inside. Great spot for an extended lunch and wine tastings.

Yelp
I've been to Pippin Hill twice now, and both times I left wanting to come back! This vineyard is definitely a favorite of mine. The landscaping was absolutely beautiful. All the flowers and lime/lemon trees were amazing. The covered patio is also perfect for a group on a nice day. We each got a wine flight. Everyone loved their wines so much that each person ended up buying a bottle to take home. I love the way they do the flight as well. We also shared a charcuterie plate and hummus which were both delicious. Highly recommend making Pippin Hill a must on your next vineyard day!

Yelp
My friend and I came here for a lovely Thursday afternoon out! First when we approach the winery, the views are breathtaking! Mountains in the background and viewing the grounds of the vineyard were like something out of an fancy estate. We were able to snag a table outside on the patio. It was hot but we were under some shade. Our server was delightful and asked what kind of wines we liked etc. We decided to go with wine flights - I got the reserve while my friend got the red. We also both got glasses of sparkling rose. The reserve wines were pretty good over all. The wild Common was my favorite of the reserves. My friends reds were okay. Some had weird notes like 'clay' or 'plotting soil'. The rose was really good! We also got some herb-garlic fries so we can munch on. We had a fun few hours there the roamed around on the grounds afterwards. The only thing I didnt like how expensive all the wines were (the reserve one i liked was $55 a bottle!!!). Overall a great winery to hang out and have some good wine.

Yelp
5 of us went on a Sunday (that happened to be UVA graduation weekend which we didn't know). We didn't have a reservation (though will next time) and got lucky with an (immediate) table inside close to a window of the gorgeous view. Our server was great, present, friendly and informative but never hovering. 4 of us were drinking and shared the red flight (yes, we had tiny tastes!) and really enjoyed it. We also shared sliders, sweet potato fries, the PHF board and then the chocolate cupcakes. Everything was perfection! The day wasn't too sunny but it was dry and warmish so we walked around a bit and got some nice candid family photos. It was very busy with a wait when we left, so next time definitely a reservation and want to sit outside and enjoy the view more directly! (Though the menu options seem like they might be different inside v outside so will have to check on that first.) Next time, be back on a date!!

Yelp
The views! The wine! The charcuterie!!! Obsessed!! So let's start with this. They tell everyone that the Brussels sprouts are their big seller. So everyone gets them and then it smells like...well...Brussels sprouts We enjoyed the PHF board and wine flights. The presentation were great on both! I was a little turned off by the unpasteurized cow milk blue cheese, but I am glad they told me what it was before I dug into it. There are lots of seating options here. We were lucky enough to snag a covered veranda spot - the seats are honestly a little comfortable but THOSE VIEWS!!!! My favorite was the Sauvignon blanc. Really cool and crisp and hot the spot on a hot day!

Yelp
Amazing small plates with nice pairing of wines. Service by Dustin was excellent. Kind caring and friendly. If you stay at Crossroads Inn you get 1 flight tasting comped. Terrace tasting enjoyed a beautiful vista of mountains with patio comfort that makes the ambiance breathtaking.

Yelp
THE BIG: Located in North Garden, which is about 20 mins south of Charlottesville. Beautiful estate with views for days of the rolling mountains. Picnic and outdoor seating available along with table service inside. Parking lot does get filled up quickly. THE BLACK AND WHITE: The wife and I have been here a couple of times and we wanted to revisit to see how the wines were. TL;DR: they are still delicious. We didn't have a reservation but there are picnic flights of four wines that you can choose from, all reds, all whites, a lil bit of both. We got the red and white flight. It was an interesting presentation with little glass bottles that you pour yourself and the stemless glassware. I'm not the biggest fan of stemless wine glasses but it worked the cuteness factor. THE FINAL BAMBOO: Overall, the picnic wine tasting of four wines was around $20. Beautiful views and definitely a must come back with a picnic to enjoy the scenery and wines.

Yelp
Delicious food, excellent wine--and the view is absolutely stunning! You've got to check out this winery next time you're in Charlottesville. It's the perfect spot for a relaxing lunch and some truly tasteful wine.

Yelp
Pippin Hill has a great reputation, and it's well-earned. It's a lovely place to spend a few hours or an afternoon or evening. In addition to the winery and restaurant, there's a lot to see on the grounds, including beautiful gardens and chickens. In the tasting room, we tried the Confit Garlic Hummus and a BLT. Everything was very tasty and fresh, as we visited in the middle of summer. My wife had a sangria, and I tried a flight plus a glass of the rosé. The wine is delicious. My only complaint is we had indoor reservations because it was 100+ degrees outside, and the air conditioning inside could not keep up with the heat. I'm not sure if it was malfunctioning or just wasn't adequate for the space, but we sat near a thermostat and could see it was in the mid-80s inside and felt like there was no air moving in the space. On the porch, there's fresh air and ceiling fans, and that may have been the better bet.

Yelp
Unique food menu. Wine and atmosphere is perfect. Only disappointed with the small table they set the four of us at. We had wine flights and apps that had no space.

Yelp
As a tourist, I would say this stop is a five out of five. I'm an anxious person and I didn't want to guess if there would be seating available when I arrived (or call to check), so I appreciated the online reservations! After reading through some Reddit posts from locals, this was a recommended spot! There are a few other popular wineries in the area to check out as well. As far as ambience, it's in a beautiful location with the rolling hills and mountains around you. The grounds are well-maintained and the building is beautiful and full of sunlight. We were sat inside and were greeted by friendly server right away that explained the menu. I decided to do the red wine flight, and my partner decided to do the white wine flight. We also ordered a charcuterie board that included the chef's daily selections. As my first true winery experience, it was fun to be able to taste the differences between each wine and play around with how each wine paired with items on the board. Their menu also has suggestions on what to pair with certain wines. After the flights, I ended up ordering a glass of their wild common, because hey, I wasn't driving! I also got a bottle to take home! I love black pepper wines, and tobacco wines, and they had several! Plenty of parking on site and your reservation is limited to 90 minutes. My only note is: I wish the waitress had come to check on us sooner, so I could order a glass earlier without rushing to drink it before we left.

Yelp
Eh. Our friends highly recommended this place while we were in Charlottesville for my birthday/babymoon. We walked in and were essentially treated like trash bc we hadn't booked a tasting/food in advance. I'm very pregnant (like 37 weeks) so obviously I wasn't doing a tasting. My husband wanted a casual, walk-in tasting and was rebuffed by two members of the staff when he asked about it - although we had looked at the website in advance and saw this was an offering. It was crowded - but there were seats available on the lawn and inside. We were told the bar had tasting but he wasn't able to get any help. It's beautiful and picturesque and has a lovely view of the mountains, gorgeous landscaping, and a pretty outdoor covered seating area on the patio but we ended up leaving pretty quickly after walking around a bit due to the treatment, hubs didn't want to spend any money here so we left and went elsewhere. I'm sure had we booked a tasting in advance we'd have had a different experience but that wasn't what we came for.

Yelp
Nestled on a rolling hillside on Virginia's Monticello Wine trail sits this amazing restaurant! Pippin Hill Farm and Vineyard is well worth a visit! From the views to the food it was amazing! The hummus platter and crispy Brussels Sprouts were perfect accompaniments for the outstanding wine flight tastings we tried! And the crispy chicken sandwich was delightful! We had attentive and knowledgeable servers and a view that was simply stunning. All together it made for a super afternoon! We highly recommend this destination.

Yelp
We've been to Pippin Hill a few times after an annual board meeting and I gotta say it's just fine dining at its best. service is impeccable and the food is wonderful... our starter was homemade focaccia with caramelized onions, with a nice crabcake salad, finished off with an olive cake and fresh whipped cream--the latter of which was worth the trip out there. absolutely phenomenal finishing touch to the dessert. my one note is the chairs were pretty uncomfortable for a fine-dining establishment. but that's just a quibble. Pippin Hill has a woodfired pizza-making station that I could sit and watch all afternoon. just an incredible setting for any type of meal.

Yelp
Such a cute boutique winery. The design gave off cottage vibes. Beautiful views and very cozy. Again, you won't find sweet wines here but there sweetest would be their petit manseng that was pretty good. And the short rib grilled cheese was perfection. Reservations are not required. Staff was nice and accommodating. We walked in and were able to sit in the enclosed veranda area.

Yelp
It's the perfect place for a glass of wine or a tasting on a crisp fall day! I went two weekends ago and it was the perfect quick get away from Richmond! It was a Saturday so it was very crowded, but that didn't stop us from having a good time! The grounds are beautiful and there is plenty of space to bring a picnic blanket and spread out! The wine was great! I did the flight and my favorite in it was the cab franc! You should totally go and sip wine and take in the views!
google avatar

Jennifer S.

Yelp
Pippin Hill Farm & Vineyards is simply lovely on all counts. The space is gorgeous with a nice rustic feel and stunning views. We split the wine tasting, which was excellent. I enjoyed each wine; all bringing something special. Although, we agreed the cab franc was the winner of the tasting. We paired our delicious wine with their hummus and artichokes - which both exceeded our expectations. I'd love to come back in warmer weather to sit outside and enjoy all the goodies.

Yelp
Friday afternoon. The view alone is worth coming! A absolutely gorgeous fall day on the hill. Friendly staff, lots of people, and calm fun atmosphere. Dog friendly. Patio is first come first serve. We got a wine flight and enjoyed the sunshine and mountaintop foliage views. Able to keep the wine glass with the $20 flight. Also a great place to picnic they provide blankets

Yelp
visited poppin hill farm and vineyard for my bday and it was such a beautiful experience. the venue is amazing and would fit any occasion I enjoyed sliders and a glass of wine. my server even gave me suggestions because I want to do a tasting but told her i like sweeter wines and she recommended one. she even gave me a special gift for my bday. "absolutely love this place" was something I hear a guest say and I absolutely agree.
google avatar

Stephanie B.

Yelp
Had a great experience last Saturday visiting this beautiful vineyard. Unfortunately we did not have a reservation but luckily there was inside seating available with maybe a 5 min wait. The view from inside was great as they have two walls of windows. We ordered the red and white flights and a charcuterie board. Then when finished both ordered a glass to take outside and wander the grounds. It's a lovely property. So many wildflowers amongst the Mountain View. Will absolutely be back again!

Yelp
This place is absolutely stunning. The pictures truly don't do it justice!!! I did a little research and chose Pippin Hill as our one winery to visit while we were in Charlottesville for just two nights, and I grabbed a reservation online a month or two in advance for lunch on the covered veranda (very glad I did - it was full the whole time we were there). Our kind server, Ethan, a brought us to the most beautiful table facing out over the mountains - it was idyllic. We decided to share two tasting flights - the reserve flight and the white/rosé flight - and we liked the majority of the wines on both. Food-wise, we were very pleased with the large portion sizes (yes, it's expensive, but at least you aren't leaving still hungry!). We shared the PHF board (both cheeses were flavorful, and the two cured meats were particularly fresh - loved the nuts, jams, olives and toasts on there, too), and we planned to get an entree, but we were so full from the board that we ended up just doing two sides - the Parmesan & herb French fries (solid - loved the fresh herbs on those) and the roasted Brussels sprouts (best thing we ate - they were served on top of whipped feta and were topped a lovely vinaigrette). We grabbed another glass of the rosé and enjoyed strolling through the grounds for an hour or so (it was pretty windy up there, but still gorgeous). This was a very memorable experience for us - it truly felt like we were in another country. Amazing that we have something like this nestled on the east coast!!!

Yelp
Food, service, ambiance and wine were all wonderful. Service was above and beyond BTW! Dog and people friendly. Fantastic landscape.
google avatar

Matthew H.

Yelp
We love visiting the Charlottesville area to tour the wineries and vineyards. We love to try new places each time, but Pippin Hill has become a spot we return to. The view from the porch is gorgeous, and the staff are so warm, inviting and friendly. And they actually have good wine! Their white wines are definitely better than the reds, but they're all quite good. They also serve some meats, cheeses, and other small bites that pair well.
google avatar

Jim M.

Yelp
Beautiful grounds - well manicured landscape overlooking the vines, with hills all around. The restaurant features high ceiling dining room, banquet room and beautiful veranda. We appreciated the dog friendly staff. Lots of cold water for Crosby & Bono. The service was very good. Tess was attentive and knowledgeable, with helpful recommendations and answers to my questions on the grapes. Excellent food. We enjoyed the delicious Mediterranean chicken and the chorizo & shishito. Finally, the most important part - the wines. These wines were 100% Virginia grown and go head to head with my favorites from California. Loved the vignette, reserve Chardonnay, cab franc and red blend dubbed Bundoran Blue.
google avatar

Jahnay M.

Yelp
Who doesn't love a beautiful view overlooking the mountains with delicious food and wine! I stopped in for a visit this past July for my birthday and was not disappointed! The service was good and the people were friendly! I also love that they offer different areas to sit in. Did I mention that the scenery was breathtaking? I also love the pet friendly atmosphere! This would also be a beautiful location for a wedding!

Yelp
Absolutely LOVED Pippin Hill. We heard about this gem from a local couple we met at our hotel bar (always listen to the locals!). It was hot but we still opted to sit on the veranda and sip on frosés ...loved it. We ordered the cheese board and beet hummus. Everything was perfect! Special shout out to Ellie, the best server ever!! And Sam, the hostess who arranged our seating. We will be back!!!!

Traci D.

Yelp
My best friend and I were there yesterday, April 17th and were extremely excited about the visit. Heard wonderful things about Pippin. We are on a fun trip, visiting wineries and hiking. The venue, farm and views were beautiful and the wine was good. What was lacking terribly, was the customer service. Upon arrival, we did not feel welcomed...just another person who walked through the door....like a fast food restaurant. We don't need the red carpet treatment, but you come to a winery for the wonderful experience. We asked to be outside. We were quickly told about the open seating on the porch rules and that there is no food service with a server to the tables available. Who does that? We had to go back to the hostess stand and place an order. Then, they texted us when our food was ready and we picked up our "box of food" from a side location. Get your own paper plates and plastic utensils.... Really? That is absurd! We love fine wine and spend good money for the efforts of wineries and lovely wines- but this set up was disturbing. She acted like she was doing us a favor to bring us our bottle of wine to our table....huh??Talk about ruining the mood for a fun afternoon. How you treat a customer is number one. Everyone is an equal. Very disappointing.

Marci G.

Yelp
Great wines, gorgeous views! We were there in the winter and reserved a seating area on the veranda ahead of time. We all loved the atmosphere and the views, and the wines were amazing. Will be back!

L M.

Yelp
Had a wonderful time, food was tasty and so was the wines! Staff was very lovely! Will be back soon:)
google avatar

Yelp
Pippin Hill was the first stop on a wine tour for my friend. Upon arriving, my friend (the bride) was pulled aside and told that due to a contract clause with future Pippin Hill brides, she could not appear or present as a bride and so she had to take a simple "Bride" headband off. I'm sorry.... WHAT? What kind of bizarre rule is that? My friend celebrating a special milestone in her life detracts from someone else doing the same? One bride wouldn't be able to picture her magical day here because my friend is wearing a headband? This happened on International Women's Day, no less; though this rule is ridiculous no matter the day. Left a bitter taste that not even the just-fine Cab Franc could wash away.
google avatar

Theresa P.

Yelp
Gorgeous venue with excellent service. The food here was also amazing. We enjoyed the sliders and Brussels Sprouts. The wines were also good for an east coast winery! This place would be a beautiful venue for a wedding.
google avatar

Torie P.

Yelp
Pippen Hill is a lovely afternoon trip. We drove over from Lynchburg to enjoy an outdoor meal and samples of their wine. The atmosphere was beautiful, staff was great, and the food was very fresh! Loved everything about it!
google avatar

Shawn O.

Yelp
We celebrated my husband's birthday after Christmas here. We ordered some of everything and enjoyed every dish. Most of our party had a flight and enjoyed all of the offerings. My husband is not a white wine drinker but he loved theirs. So much so, that we took 2 bottles to go and our daughter, who had been to this winery before also took a bottle to go. We purchased the Petit Manseng and Chardonnay Reserve to go. When we left, we took in the amazing views of the vineyard. We had reserved a table inside bc it was a chilly rainy day but realized when we left that the best views are on the covered and heated veranda.
google avatar

Emily M.

Yelp
Absolutely beautiful and the food and wine are delicious! We opted to just try a few wines, enjoy the scenery and acclaimed food menu, but you can do a tasting. They have a beautiful porch that spans the length of the building (in two sections), so there isn't a bad view anywhere. There is plenty of seating inside and event space as well. The tapas style is really nice since you are likely to have trouble deciding on just one item with the variety of ingredients and tastes. The only notable that would have been a problem for us is that 90 minute table limit. Had we had all day, you'd easily want to sit there and enjoy for hours. If you're winery hopping, it's totally fine. Go enjoy yourselves!!!
google avatar

Amanda P.

Yelp
Service is warm, inviting, and just the right amount of attentiveness, considerate and thoughtful - really outstanding overall. Food is good - salad was fantastic. Wine is also really good - all we tasted were good but I liked the cab franc the best. View is breathtaking. Just felt like a family member being there and enjoyed it all around.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite vineyards in Charlottesville. Waiting a month for the perfect patio reservation is never a pain, in fact, it gives me something special to look forward to. This place is perfectly charming. I've always said I'm not the type of person who would want to spend too much money on a wedding. When I visit Pippin Hill I'm like FORGET THAT! Sure I'll sell my soul to get married here. All jokes aside, this place is pretty special. When you walk in you're surrounded by huge, gorgeous flowery bushes. The facade is idyllic and the mountains surrounding the vineyard are even more picturesque. Every memory I have here is a special one. You're bound to have a good time here. If you don't want to wait for a reservation, you are welcome to get a drink at the bar and picnic on the yard. There is also inside seating offered (you usually need a reservation for those spots on busier days). The first time I came here was for my anniversary. My partner and I got some yummy bites and enjoyed a wine flight. On my most recent trip here, I came with six girlfriends. Most of us got the white wine flight. We all agreed that the zero white was our favorite. Wandering around the grounds is a treat too. You can walk through their vegetable garden, meet chickens, and look at the wildflowers. I love this place so much. It's gorgeous, the service is great, the wine is just right, and the views are to die for.

Cori W.

Yelp
Great location. Fabulous food. Friend and I went here for a 1 pm lunch reservation. We sat inside, got a bottle of wine and lunch. We shared a Cuban sandwich and pickled veggies both of which were excellent. We ended with toffee carrot cake. Perfect. We shared a flight and then got a bottle of pinot. It was nice to drink there. Nothing I would take home especially at the price range. All in all, lovely place, great food and pretty good wine.
google avatar

Payton W.

Yelp
This is my personal favorite winery in the area of the maybe 10 or so that I've been to. The scenery is unrivaled, the food is delicious and the wine is solid, too. I'd recommend a reservation for the best experience!
google avatar

Rashanda J.

Yelp
Absolutely breathtaking!!! This is by far the best vineyard that I have been to in years. Stepping onto the property made me feel like I was out on vacation. From the moment we were greeted by the hostess, we knew we were in for a special treat. Our reservation for the covered veranda was honored on time, and our waiter came and gave us an amazing overview of the property, menu and wine flights. Darryl was an entire vibe. He made us feel so welcomed and treated us like royalty. Loved his energy and positivity. We started with a charcuterie board, followed by the following: braised pork belly, sliders, burrata and tomato and a heirloom and tomato BLT. The food was delicious and the wine was amazing. I can't wait to come back. Tip: make a reservation and go during the week. The scenic views, landscaping, and the kindness of the staff make this place 5 stars!! Loved it!!

Yelp
We came to Pippin Vineyards a few days ago and I am still thinking about it. Everything from the wine to the food was impeccable. When we arrived we felt right at home due to the welcoming staff. We were lucky to snag a spot on the patio- every table had an amazing view of the mountains. They also had blankets and heaters in case it's a little chilly! We got the PHF board to start thinking we just wanted a snack, but it was so delicious we ended up having to try more. The Duck Confit Tater Tots- it's a dish you won't forget. It has such a unique flavor and you'll be scrapping the dish wanting more. Then we of course had to get dessert and thank god we did! The pumpkin toffee cake with cream cheese ice-cream will blow your mind. We almost bought another one it was so good. It's a dish you'll try to recreate at home. Overall, I'll be back. The whole experience made me giddy while I was there. You won't be disappointed!

Yelp
This is a beautiful vineyard. The landscape is just amazing. My favorite wine was the frozen rose. It was just delicious. The service is quick and easy. Just order from your phone and pick it up. Great space to hang out with some friends.

Yelp
Pippin Hill was the first stop on our Charlottesville wine tour. We started the day enjoying a wonderful lunch paired with a variety of wines. We purchased an 8 bottle package for the table to share which allowed us to taste most of the wines Pippin Hill has to offer and saved us money (yay!). Another bonus is that we had enough wine to take a couple of bottles home to enjoy later! Pippin Hill is a beautiful vineyard and guests have their choice of indoor or patio seating. Our lunch included an array of items from the menu including the beef sliders and truffle fries, a charcuterie board, pizza, shrimp and pasta, and a grilled cheese sandwich with brisket. Everyone raved about their entrees and loved every single wine we tasted. Our only regret is that we didn't schedule enough time to take in the experience or explore the grounds. We had to eat and rush to our next tasting. I highly recommend this vineyard and look forward to coming back and get better pics - these photos don't do the experience justice!

Yelp
Pippin hill is one of my fave wineries in Charlottesville! The views are top notch and the food and wine is delicious! We like to go early for lunch and enjoy the views from the veranda. This time we tried the rosemary and Gruyère bread which was light and delicious as well as the pork belly and fries. Also had the sparkling wine and the white wine flight. I ended up leaving with a bottle of sauv blanc to add to my collection. A couple tips- book your reservation early as it's the best way to go for a hot day. Also they are dog friendly on the covered veranda! Can't wait to come back soon!

Norm B.

Yelp
plan to visit this winery in august of this year and look forward to it. we are in town Tuesday - Thursday and are shocked out how few wineries are open during the week- way to go Pippin!

Mark M.

Yelp
We came for lunch. But we wanted to taste the wines. We're used to a traditional tasting room. We drove all the way from North Carolina. We have been to wineries all over the world. Problem was the staff spent almost no time in the restaurant explaining their wines. I didn't expect a life story of each wine maker. But can't you at least tell me about the flights? All I got was brief detail of the glasses we ordered instead of flights because we were given such little info. Waitress would stop by and as soon as I opened my mouth she would be gone. Food was ok not great for the price. A chicken dish that was little bits of food. Brussel sprouts ok. Dessert ok not great. Coffee was watered down and was awful. I still left a tip.

The winery is so picturesque! The grounds are beautiful as well as the interior. We did a walk in on a Saturday, and were able to get a table as people were leaving. Since it was just two of us and our dog, we didn't make a reservations but I'd recommend for larger groups. We shared a wine tasting and I thought the wines were just ok. I really wanted to like them since I've heard good things. I would return for the ambience and to hang out

Yelp
Pippin is the most beautiful indoor/outdoor winery i've been to in four years in Charlottesville. The building is lovely and it's great for indoor tastings. The view outside is gorgeous, though i've seen slightly prettier, but I would definitely recommend this place for an upscale crowd who wants to sit down and have a nice dining experience. Their wine selection is great and the tasting is super fun when they supply note cards to enjoy the wines and understand the flavors with. The flowers are beautiful outside in the summer and spring and the hill it sits atop is lovely!

Yelp
July 2023 update: I visited Pippin Hill again recently and had a great time. We had a great server (I think his name as jimmy?) who was very helpful. Do note that you cannot wear sashes on the property if you come with a bach party! The frose option (like a wine slushie) was delicious but somewhat expensive at $15. Wines are decent, but the food is very fresh and tasty. We particularly enjoyed the english pea dip and PHF board to share.

Yelp
Beautiful location & venue. Lovely deck/porch seating area, open restaurant room with high ceilings, large rooms. We got to sit near the pizza oven & bar overlooking the mountains, so great views from all sides. The menu isn't huge but was good, the salad was delicious, light but flavorful. The veg & hummus was good too. Pizza would have been outstanding-and probably normally is-but the bottom was burned/charred black (you can't tell from the pic). Also, I was kind of disappointed that at such a nice place, they couldn't make the daily special pizza without the meat. It was all ingredients or cheese only. Interesting. Wine was excellent, they did not skimp on the flight amounts, and you can get extra tastes of others at no charge, to try more. Bathrooms were pretty good but needed a bit of cleaning. Overall a really nice place.

Yelp
We had lunch at the vineyard. Everything was delicious and the service was excellent. We enjoyed the beautiful view and a stroll around the gardens. I will definitely go back the next time we're in Charlottesville.
