The 20 Best Restaurants & Bars In San Juan, Puerto Rico 2024

"Pirilo’s in Old San Juan is easy to miss—its tiny entrance leads to a narrow flight of stairs that takes you to an exposed brick, industrial-looking place. Order a classic pie, like their margherita or the Pirilo, which has tomato sauce, mozzarella, ground beef, and ripe sweet plantains, as well as the croquetas de mamposteao or the garlic knots. Add a Genoveva sangria and you’ve got a classic, albeit a bit unexpected, San Juan experience. " - adriana silva

Don’t be put off by the dingy staircase entrance — it’s not the most inviting first impression, but once you reach the top, you’ll find a charming little pizza restaurant that’s definitely worth the climb. We had about a 30-minute wait for a table. The staff mentioned they’d call us when our table was ready, but we ended up checking back in after a short walk and were seated upstairs. The service was friendly and efficient, and the food came out in good time. We started with the arugula salad with balsamic dressing — fresh, well-balanced, and delicious. For mains, we ordered the chicken lasagna and a 16-inch pizza. The lasagna was delicious! Super cheesy! The great thing about their pizzas is that you can do half-and-half, so we went with pepperoni on one side and margherita on the other. My husband loved how cheesy the pizza was. I personally thought it could’ve used a touch more salt, but the flavors were still solid. Overall, it’s a great little spot for a casual date night — cozy atmosphere, good service, and tasty food. Don’t judge this one by the entrance!

Google
Definitely top notch pizza! We arrived to find a line of ten people deep outside the door of the restaurant. It took about 30 minutes to get seated once we got our name on the list. Staff were friendly and service was fast. Their prices were average for the area. We got two pizzas and each was packed full of flavor. Overall it was worth the wait as the all the food was delicious!

Google
Don’t be shocked by the entrance. At first we were not impressed by the service. We waited quite a bit to even place a drink order. When we finally did, and had been waiting our waiter came back and asked what we ordered for drinks? I was like this is bad, so that order never got placed. Another 20 minutes, finally order calamares and our pizza La Pampa 10”. The couple next to us, was leaving and asked what was taking our food so long and stated he would send over his favorite go to person there. That’s when the evening got so much better. Carlos was our savior and was so kind/polite. He took care of us and didn’t disappoint. Thank you Carlos for taking such good care of us. The carrot cake was excellent. We will definitely be back and ask for Carlos.

I heard really great things about this pizza place so I decided to try it out while in Old San Juan. Here’s my thoughts. The pizza itself (while took some time however it was a busy Sunday night so that’s expected) was amazing. One of the best I’ve had so far while living on the island. We got the mushroom pizza and while it’s not my favorite, I loved it. I would absolutely get it again. The service was a little lacking. Our server got us drinks and then stopped back after we were all done and wanted the check. I would have to say it’s a close 5 stars however the service would have checked all the boxes.

Google
Looked a little shady from the outside but once you go up the stairs the restaurant has the cutest decor throughout! The staff was very attentive and the food was top tier! I had the fried eggplant with plantains and it was fresh and flavorful! My sister had the lasagna, was a little oily due to the cheese but overall it had good taste. My other sister had a pizza, great flavor. My older sister got the breaded chicken breast, it had good flavors but it was a little chewy in some parts. Would come back, enjoyed the experience and food.

Google
The food was really good. I had pepperoni pizza. My friend had the dish with sausage and fried cheese. Our server was polite. She agreed to move us when we asked not to sit by the kitchen.

Google
This hidden gem provided excellent customer service above and beyond Our server recommend absolutely the perfect foodies and Supreme Beer ✨️🇵🇷

Google
I have eaten at Pirilo but at the Dorado location and this Pirilo was a bit disappointing since the pizza was very thin like a sheet of paper both my pizza and my daughters, if I were to visit again it would only be in the Dorado location. Sad I like to help the local businesses but you know what you are serving before it get to the table. This is the only positive I took. the restaurant has a very nice setup

Yelp
I stumbled upon this place while exploring the wonders and mysteries of Old San Juan. This ambience is alluring and awe inspiring. You truly feel like you have reached back in time to visit. But the wonder doesn't stop there. Their drinks are fantastical with the hand crafted creation that awakens your taste buds and the artistic part of your mind. Definitely a must see of Old San Juan. The staff is helpful, kind, and full of courtesy. The food reaches back to a place thought lost with the passing of time. I will have to visit again one day in the near future. Thank you.

Yelp
A nice find for lunch while our family spent the day visiting Old San Juan. At first glance, you wouldn't know that it also has quite a few Spanish dishes in case you're in the mood for more than just Italian. We also made reservations online beforehand after reading reviews that it's popular and oftentimes on a wait. Highly recommend the Empanadillitas Sampler (we ordered 2 of these) and their Pulpo as starters! These were great hits with our group. If you're in the mood for pizza, they have a good amount of recipes and you can order half-half with any of them when ordering the 16" grande size. Tried and true options we ordered were the Margarita and El Pecado but regrettably, the Di Genonveva could've been better. The latter had fully cooked smoked salmon which was odd to me and way too much onions. Overall, a great option for pizza in the area and very family friendly!

Yelp
Would recommend reservations as this place is popular. It is popular for a reason. It is wonderful. (The wait can be up to several hours if you don't have reservations-the bar across the street is a good place to wait . ) Located in old San Juan the restaurant is upstairs and in beautiful space. The dining room was a little chilly fyi. Has a full bar with seating as well. Great Italian food with a Puerto Rico twist. We tried multiple items on the menu and it was all amazing. Great wine and drink list to pair with the food. Prices fair and staff attentive and helpful. Would happily return here again.

Yelp
Excellent pizza in Old San Juan! Our server suggested there was no charge to do different halves for each pizza, which was a great option. Most of us got a personal pizza and everyone loved their order. The favorites of the group were: La Rucula and 7 Quesos. The vegetable was the least favorite. Can't go wrong with Pirilo.
google avatar

Iva J.

Yelp
This is a charming restaurant with a family-oriented atmosphere. The pizza is excellent, and the drinks are equally impressive. I will definitely return the next time I visit Puerto Rico.

Yelp
As usual, Pirilo hit the spot. I was between the 4 Cebollas and Mucho Mushrooms. I de used for the 4 cebollas. It was a good choice. The onions used were red, white, Visalia, and green onions. Next time I'll try the Mucho Mushroom. I forgot the name of our server, but she was very nice. We went on a Saturday evening and had to wait about 45 min to be seated. When we left there was a line outside the door. Best to make a reservation if you can.

Yelp
La mejor oizza de san juan y pr... variedad unica de cervezas y pizzas entre otras!! Lo recomiendo

Cory C.

Yelp
Forgot to take pictures, but this pizza was great! We ordered 2 large pizzas to share, each with different halves. The first pizza was half Hawaiian, half margarita. The second pizza was half carbonara, and half carnitas. All 4 were phenomenal, would highly recommend!
google avatar

Yelp
This is a Spanish/Italian fusion restaurant. I had the Spanish octopus ($13.50) and the seafood empanadas ($9). The Spanish octopus was tender and perfectly cooked. My friends each got their own 10" pizzas which I ended up helping them eat. The restaurant provided free tap water with the meal which was definitely appreciated.

Yelp
If you want to be treated poorly and like an outsider this is the place to be. If you don't speak fluent spanish it will be hard to interact here. Other restaurants with better food, service, and prices: Serafina and Via Appia's Firstly, with a party of 5, we put our names down for about a 45 minute wait. We returned after an hour where the very rude host (Ricardo) would only speak in Spanish to our friend who lives here in PR. He told us that we were up next and would be about another 15-30 minutes. We return around that time where he then realizes he called the wrong number (huh??), sat some random party, and had already crossed our names off the list. At this point we are starving so he says we will be seated next. No apology or anything. As we stand there, he actually seats a party of 11 who had only been there 30 minutes and we watch as he brings them upstairs. I guess he feels guilty about that so he also sends us upstairs (out of sight out of mind I guess) to wait by their bar. We literally are like blocking the entrance because it is an awkward spot to be. I am assuming that Ricardo did not tell his manager about us as we stand there for another 15 minutes in the doorway and not once did anyone ask if we needed help. I, a native English speaker, try to flag down the manager and twice he brushes me off without letting me explain myself. After another party of 6 gets seated right in front of us, I again try and speak to the manager who flags us down and tells me to wait without letting me explain how I think Ricardo did not tell anyone about our current 2 hour wait situation. He brushes me off and my friend who speaks spanish and lives in PR is the ONLY person to get him to stop moving and explains. Again, no apologies for the situation, but seats us at the next opportunity. Look, mistakes happen and I get it. But a lack of apology, attempts to fix the situation, or even the ability to look me in the eye was disappointing. There is poor communication all around. Add on to that some weak food, I would recommend going somewhere else to eat. Overpriced as well. I had the mushroom ravioli and found it entirely too salty as well as a piece of linguini on my plate meaning they don't clean or even rinse their pans in between cooks. Pizza was undercooked, but I did enjoy the prosciutto they had. Server was bare bones and minimally interactive with us. Manager did not come by once during the meal which was totally okay but I did wish he would at least have apologized once for the 2 hour+ wait time and mistake by Ricardo. I would not trust a restaurant who doesn't take responsibility when they make a mistake as I can't imagine how that would affect quality of their food.

Yelp
Pirilo is the only pizza place where I break my Gluten Free diet. The order this time the bows (los lazitos) and hummus for appetizers. The hummus we choose the chips as a side and they were good! the chips were perfectly crisp today the service wasn't great to be honest... our server didn't even bring us water, we had to ask twice for the drinks we ordered to other servers.. The pizza for me today was a bit too much salty, but everyone else loved the pizza‍ they are currently renovating part of the restaurant, i think it's just the bar, so it can feel really crowded. But still a good place yo eat!
google avatar

Caitie H.

Yelp
Love this place! We got the large mushroom pizza and the cilantro fries which was more than enough to share between two people. For vegetarian folks this place has lots of options and I think you should try the mushroom one! The service was good too and servers were kind and attentive. They are currently renovating so we sat upstairs which was peaceful and the AC was a nice break from the heat outside. Highly recommend this place!

Yelp
UNA BARBARIDAD!!!! PRECIOS DEMASIADOS ALTAS!!!

Yelp
Great atmosphere. Great service. Great food. Would definitely recommend Kinda weird. Armed security guard at door. I guess their recipes are to die for. .
google avatar

Charlotte C.

Yelp
The food is pretty good. We got a pepperoni pizza and a meat pizza (I don't remember what it's called). It's a little pricey but it's island prices I think. I would eat there again but also probably try somewhere else. They don't have ranch but they have a cilantro sauce that's super delicious. It is located in old San Juan in an alley type transito. There is a hostess to check you in and an armed security guard as well as a line down the street. Interesting and confusing vibe. Street parking only which is awful (not their fault).

Yelp
Delicious food and beautiful atmosphere. Only one server but we had fine service. Get the DULCINEA cocktail
google avatar

Alexis M.

Yelp
The drink and food are excellent! The tiny tables and lack of air conditioning provide for a unique experience. The service was excellent.
google avatar

Irving R.

Yelp
Wow great food here. I love the twist on dishes, like the chicken lasagna with a slight Latino flair. The pizza was prob the best I've had on the island and this empanadillas argentinas were delicious af. The entrance was a lil shady, I felt I was going into a hidden speakeasy but it was completely worth it. Great place great food.
google avatar

Yelp
Food is decent but our food took an hour. The waitress forgot but didn't bring us fresh food. Just served us cold pizza and manager dismissed. Manager said we could have heated it up if you told us. Heated it up? How bout serve your food fresh.

Zachary I.

Yelp
It's a must ! Old San Juan at its best ! Just go ! Service can be slow but when you see the line outside you'll understand. Good value and good beer specials
google avatar

Yelp
Cool little spot! Kind of hidden, just behind the Chinese restaurant. We had pizza and a some drinks and it was probably an 8/10. Pizza was pretty greasy. But the ambience was awesome and the staff was really cool.

Maddy B.

Yelp
Stopped here for a late lunch! No wait when we arrived and had a great atmosphere. Waiter was very nice and good at answering questions. I am gluten free, so i could not eat much, but my family enjoyed! I ordered the fries with the cilantro sauce which was super flavorful! I also got the arugula salad which i loved! A good serving and the dressing was delicious. Some things my family ordered were the garlic knots, pepperoni pizza, pepperoni calzone, gnocchi with meat sauce, empandillitas sampler, and rosada pizza. All looked fantastic! The calzones are massive though. Overall cute little place and really enjoyed! I didn't give four stars just because they didn't have much for gluten free people, which is a bummer.

Sean P.

Yelp
Very solid pizza place in San Juan. Cooked nearly perfect, but definitely preferred La Pampa. Had a ton of flavor and was quite unique. Did not enjoy the Basilica flavors as much as it was covered with a TON of onion. Great service, affordable wine bottles, and solid pizza. Can't go wrong!
google avatar

Sydney B.

Yelp
Wonderful ambience and food. Wait time was super fair for the large group we had and the service was great. We loved our experience here. The empanada tapas were the favorite!
google avatar

Yelp
Great place old san juan atmosphere! Tasty pizzas and abundant salads. Great cocktails Will return. Definitely has charm. High ceilings.
google avatar

Yelp
Great food and service. We highly recommend this restaurant if you're looking for pizza while in Old San Juan.
google avatar

Sarah P.

Yelp
We tried 4 different flavors and they were all delicious! They let you split the large pizzas into 2 flavors which we really enjoyed. We tried the Pirilo, Rosada, Hawaiian (with mango), and the Tripleta. The homemade fruit punch was amazing!

Yelp
We came here, without reservations, on a Sunday night for our last meal in PR because this place had amazing Yelp & TripAdvisor reviews and was also highly recommended by our tour guide. This was kind of a big let-down for a number of reasons: 1. We put our names down at 5PM for a group of 6 girls. We were told that it would be a 45 minute wait. We were like "ok, I guess we can wait that long for the BEST PIZZA IN PUERTO RICO." Except it wasn't 45 minutes, more like DOUBLE that. I don't fault a restaurant for being popular but I do blame them when they tell a group of hungry girls that they only have to wait 45 minutes and it turns out to be an hour and a half. If I had that info at the start, maybe we would have chosen to go somewhere else. Instead we were captive customers there, being told that "very soon, it will be our turn" but never given an actual ETA. I was a bit of a hangry **tch by the time we finally had a table. 2. Perhaps all would have been forgiven if the pizza lived up to the hype. it did not. It doesn't help that most of us came from NY and were spoiled by amazing NY pizza (even the wait at the most popular NYC pizzerias are not that long). But exact quotes from some of my friends on this pizza: - "Reminds me of Dominos" - "Actually I think I prefer Dominos" - "Kind of taste like sawdust." I actually thought it tasted fine but it was super underwhelming given the Yelp reviews and 100-minute wait. I will say that the flavors are interesting and I appreciate that we can do half pies even for the individual pizzas. However I caution the pizza connoisseurs to stay away because other than the interesting flavor combinations, it was lacking in a lot of pizza fundamentals (good crust, ideal cheese to flour ratio). And if you must go, make sure you make reservations so that you're not waiting around 45 (but really 100) minutes for sub-par pizza.
google avatar

Hannah M.

Yelp
I came here for lunch and was seated immediately at the bar. The bartender was super nice and friendly, really liked him and he was great with making small talk with everyone around. I ordered some variation of a mojito to drink which was tasty and well made. They have a good beer selection as well including a lot of craft choices. While far from being the best pizza I've had in my life, this was inarguably the best pizza I had in Puerto Rico, which I'm sure isn't saying much but if you're like me and need pizza at least once a week to survive, Pirilo definitely holds a candle to good "mainland" pizza. Prices are a bit higher than they should be but fair overall. I think I paid $13 for a personal pepperoni pizza and it's definitely personal sized. But it was tasty and filling and the perfect level of greasy. Wish they had outdoor seating. It was a bit stuffy/dark inside on a beautiful day. Would return.
google avatar

Emily K.

Yelp
We tried both Pirilo locations while in San Juan, and neither disappointed! Both times there was a wait, but soooo worth it. The food was SO good. Get the empanadillitas marinas, you won't be sorry. They were so good we wished we ordered more. We went in April, and I'm still missing them. And the pizza... is AMAZING. The La Pampa was my favorite. We also tried the 7 quesos & the mucho mushroom, but skip those and choose La Pampa!!! Very filling, the small pizza is more than enough for 2 people if you get drinks & an appetizer. On our second trip we also tried the provoleta, and it was amazing. Great appetizer to share! Overall everything was SO flavorful and well worth the wait & the money spent! Great experiences at both san juan locations. Highly recommend.

Janice W.

Yelp
What a fun spot for some really good Mexican food! The service was great. Drinks unique and spot on. We shared the tuna tacos and an order of carnitas. Delicious! Didn't have dessert...but from what I saw would recommend.
google avatar

Lynette S.

Yelp
Operations are a disaster. Unbelievably slow service with no acknowledgement from staff or management. Two of our dishes must have sat in the window for at least 30 mins to be room temperature before someone bothered bringing it out to us. I was expecting this place to be good because every time we walked by it was busy and clearly has a cool space. Alas, save yourself the headache and go any place else - they missed the mark across the board.
google avatar

Nicole F.

Yelp
I know what you're thinking, pizza in Puerto Rico? Hear me out, this place was one of my favorite stops on my honeymoon. When you first walk in, the bar and tables seem crowded and it's a tight space. Keep walking, towards the back there is a staircase to the second level and there you find the gem that is Pirilo! We had such a great time taking in the scenery and ambiance of this restaurant. The food was beyond delicious, pizza and pasta in Puerto Rico is a MUST. I plan to make this a required stop every time we fly into Viejo San Juan.
google avatar

Vanessa G.

Yelp
Strolling down San Juan, PR and in the mood for a Pizza before bar hopping, site seeing or family time!? Stop by Pirilo! It's a nice, cozy spot! Has a great setup inside from tables, chairs and even the lighting to set the mood! You will not be disappointed!
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
I was told by my taxi driver that Pirilo has the best pizza in Old San Juan and it just happened to be in the same block as my hotel so I had dinner there on Monday night. All of the restaurants and bars here require masks and proof of vaccination to enter the front door. Once inside you walk thru an unused bar area on the first floor and then climb stairs up to the second floor where the restaurant is located. There is a big bar with TV's along with separate tables and chairs and then another side room for dining too. I chose the personal size 10" Di Mare pizza for $19. I like a good seafood pizza when I can get it which is rarely. Mine took about 15 minutes to come out. It had shrimp and calamari along with red onions, bell peppers, mozzarella, tomato sauce and garlic on a medium crust pie. It was a good tasting pizza. I really enjoyed the shrimp but I must say the calamari was as calamari is and that is chewy. This made eating a chewy pizza even chewier. Maybe a little too much. Perhaps they should consider subbing the calamari for another type of seafood. Table service was good. I'd give this meal a 3.5 but will round up fir Yelp purposes because I believe their pizzas are very good.
google avatar

J M.

Yelp
For a New Yorker to find a decent pizza place outside of NY is a treat. Great ambiance with a cool rustic feel in Old San Juan! Service was on point and the selection of Beers to match to the pizza was awesome!
google avatar

Brittany R.

Yelp
So glad we just made the snap decision to eat here. The food was amazing, service was friendly and quick. Definitely recommend!
google avatar

Tim R.

Yelp
Ok I understand you're having some construction work done. No worries The bar area lacked air conditioning The bar had an annoying beeping noise that nobody who works there cared about it. The slick drink was served with a canned jalapeño not a fresh. That a first for me on the island. However the food is still good and tasty.

Kim K.

Yelp
Old San Juan, awesome pizza, great sangria and the most delicious desserts! Oh, add that to the nicest people in the service industry and what do you have, one of the best pizzerias in town. If you are a cheese lover, try the the 7 Cheese Pizza as an entree withe the any of their turnovers as appetizer. Depending on the time you arrive, you might have to wait for a table, and the wait could vary from a few minutes to an hour, but it's OSJ, there are plenty of things to do while you wait, if you have to wait, and it is worth the wait!

Joebian O.

Yelp
The pizza pies are endless! Must try the Pirilo Pie with the plantains!!! The DI mare pie my second best!! I would've tried them all!! Great service prompt and attentive. Beautiful Ambiance with a twist of Puerto Rican Italian !! Come with an appetite and walk away satisfied!! Make sure to stop here! Waiter was super nice!!! If your in San Juan stop here!!!! Don't forget those appetizers!!!
google avatar

Mara A.

Yelp
Amazing service and amazing pizza! It looks like a speakeasy, but you go up the stairs and is a cool nice restaurant. Yuca fries, mozzarella "sticks", and yuca fries are great!

B C.

Yelp
Amazing pizza. The location has so much character. Eat upstairs if you can, it's open air and they have a great bar. Love old San Juan!

Emily N.

Yelp
Food was great got a grande pizza and split between myself and my boyfriend with empanada appetizer. This was enough for both of us and it was delicious. Service was okay, accommodating for English speakers. Price I think is definitely fair. Took me off guard with security outside but they just manage if people can go upstairs or not for seating which I found interesting. Went up the stairs and it was super hot and humid which worried me but got into the restaurant and there was A/C where we sat but looked like it was out on the other side. Overall good experience. Also wait there was no wait for two people at 6pm on a Monday

Yelp
Craving for some pizza while in Old San Juan - Look no further - Pirilo is here to save (and spoil) you. Getting a table here is a task - they have a huge wait time so I highly recommend getting a reservation online. Once you get in this place is unbelievably huge. We wasted no time and directly ordered our drinks - Genoveva (Pirilo's Sangria) & Dulcinea (Peach Rum+Amaretto). We loved both the drinks but the sangria was the highlight. Who would have thought sesame seeds and almond would compliment a sangria so well? For pizzas we ordered the Mucho Mushroom (great choice for veggie lovers) and La Pampa (excellent choice for meat lovers). Not one bit disappointed with the pizzas, in fact it was delicious and I could keep eating these slices all night. For dessert we ordered the 4 leches and it was excellent, fresh, juicy, soft - melting in your mouth. Service was awesome. Quality of food amazing. Highly recommend if you are looking for great sangria and pizzas while in Old San Juan.

Yelp
Great pizza place right in Old San Juan! The decor is so cool and the food and drinks were great too. Had a bit of a wait when we arrived but we were actually seated before the estimated wait time. Definitely check it out if you're in the mood for pizza.

Hunter H.

Yelp
Terrible service, say the couple in front of us in ten minutes, checked her phone before telling us it'd be a 1.5-2 hour wait for a party of 2 on Sunday... then immediately watched them seat a walk up table of 8? Profit over customers is exactly what I wanted to avoid on a vacation, trash establishment with trash people

Yelp
Amazing vibes and great pizza. This location was a great find on a late night stroll in old San Juan! I had a personal pizza and some garlic knots. Would definitely recommend for a date or gathering with friends

Danielle M.

Yelp
Excellent food and beautiful space! They have really nice pasta dishes. I highly recommend the mushroom ravioli. The lasagna is also very good. The inside is incredible looking and worth the dining experience alone. We went on a Friday night and there was a waiting list to get in, as with all the restaurants in Old San Juan.

Yelp
I was told by my Puerto Rican friend that I had to try this place if I like pizza and I'm glad that I did. The personal size pizzas were the perfect size for me (it's about the size of 4 slightly-wider slices from a standard pizza chain). I also loved that you can choose 2 different toppings for the pizza because I personally have trouble committing to just one topping. The pizza was nice and thin, the toppings were pretty good (I got the Margarita and Pirilos toppings). I wouldn't say that this is the best pizza I've had, but it's definitely really good and worth a visit if you're feeling like eating some pizza in PR.
