The first week back to real life after the holidays was definitely a struggle, so when Friday finally rolled around, my boyfriend and I were more than ready for a fun night out. With the keyword being fun, it didn't take us long to decide to check out Pistola's Del Sur for dinner and drinks!
We walked in at about 8 pm to Pistola's new location in Passyunk. We were immediately seated at one of the bar tops near the bar and right outside the kitchen. We got a perfect view of the TV that was playing the Sixers game - we were all about that!
Prior to even looking through the drink menu, I knew how I wanted to start the night off - a spicy mango margarita! It's my favorite at the other Pistola's locations, but unfortunately, they didn't have it at this one. :( While they did offer a mango margarita, they didn't have spicy mango. After double checking with our waitress, she informed me that although they didn't have it, she could create a similar version so I decided to take her up on it. Although it wasn't exactly what I'm used to, it was good.
As for food, my boyfriend and I got the octopus and cactus salsa. Although we are usually all about that guac, this unique dish was calling our name. The octopus was delicious and we were both raving about the cactus. Although I'm glad we branched out a bit from our usual, I did miss the guac. I now know not to make that mistake again - ALWAYS GET THAT GUAC!!!
As for my entree, I got the spicy pork tacos which came with grilled pineapple, kimchi, and cilantro. So tasty! Very flavorful and I loved the sweet and spicy combination. The tacos were filled to the BRIM with pork making them pretty messy. The soft tortilla wasn't really holding everything together so I ended up using a fork during most of my meal. Still, the tacos were very good so no complaints on my end. There's no dainty way of eating tacos anyway!
After our appetizer and entrees, we were pretty full and passed on dessert. We did have room for one more drink though! This time, I tried the El Diablo marg while my boyfriend stuck to beer. My second drink was so-so. Although there isn't anything particularly bad to say about it, it just wouldn't be my first pick.
Our waitress, Lindsey, was awesome! Super energetic and funny, too! She was attentive throughout the entire night which was much appreciated. She also let us in on a little tip: did you know the freedom tacos are HALF PRICE on Sundays?! What a great way of guaranteeing a solid Sunday funday! I'm sure I'll be taking up on that sometime soon considering the freedom tacos are my boyfriends favorite ones!
I would highly recommend checking this place out, whether on a weeknight or weekend! Make sure you go in hungry and ready to devour some delicious Mexican fare and margs!
