I was pleasantly surprised by my first visit to this restaurant. The food was exceptionally flavorful, and I must say, they serve the best crawfish in the Baton Rouge area. The brisket was also incredibly tender. The chef truly has a gift for cooking. I highly recommend this establishment.

Google
We had the very best BBQ Smoked Ribs ever! They were delicious! We also had the pulled pork, green beans, french fries, and coleslaw which were also all very delicious. And even though we ordered our meals right at closing time, the food was fresh, delicious, and just what we ordered! We highly recommend eating at Pit-n-Peel BBQ and Seafood. We wish we had your restaurant back Atlanta, Georgia!!! Thank you for such delicious food!!

Google
To say the food is top tier would be an understatement. When we walked in we immediately noticed the serene atmosphere. The owner of the restaurant Mr. Von took our order with a smile, carefully explaining any questions we had about the menu. While waiting for our food to be prepared we enjoyed a game of ping pong on the table near the front dinning area. When our food game out I was in shock! The food looked and smelled amazing! My plate was generously filled which is a big plus in my book. Have you ever had food that's so good that it makes you want to dance? While eating my food I couldn't keep still, my food was so good! The brisket was so tender that I could have eaten it even if I didn't have teeth. I'm a picky eater so I was surprised at just how perfectly the pasta was cooked. I could say alot more but I think I have said enough. Take a look at the picture I have posted and head over to the absolute BEST restaurant in Baton Rouge!

Google
I have nothing but good things to say about this place. The owner is nice, cooks the food himself, and is not shy about getting to know his guests. I know I was the only person in the place he didn't know. The ribs were the best I've had in a very long time. No BBQ sauce needed. The ribs seem to have been seasoned with a rub and the flavor was great. The catfish was no less satisfying. The mustard greens alone are worth coming back for!!! If you drive through Baton Rouge, you have to pull up, take a seat, loosen your belt, and dig in because this place is good. Don't be in a hurry, good food should never be rushed.

Google
AMAZING! I DEFINITELY recommend! I’m going to start with dessert. The banana pudding is the best I’ve EVER had. Shrimp ettoufee is just out of this world! Fried catfish, sautéed cabbage and crab cakes??? I can’t even. It was ALL GOOD! But nothing compares to the owner, Von. He cooked it all from scratch…by his self. This is a one man band that is making MAGIC in the kitchen. He’s kind, friendly, skilled…and clearly great at what he does. I can’t recommend this enough!

Google
If you're looking for a Louisiana cultural cuisine then stop at this place for some delicious gumbo! The mac and cheese here is equally good. The owner of this establishment also works the counter and is also the cook! He runs the place single handed and if you get a chance to strike up a conversation with him you'll see that he's a deep thinker, there's nothing shallow about this man.

Google
Absolutely FABULOUS! They were actually closed to do a catering event for the Super Bowl but served us anyway!! It was absolutely WONDERFUL! I had the Mud Bugs (Crawfish) and my husband had the ribs. They were fantastic also. Sorry, I forgot to take a pic of the ribs because I couldn't wait to dig in to my Mud Bugs. Lol...

Yelp
UPDATE: I went back with the extended family for another delicious brisket sammy and got some good pics of the different plates our party ordered. We even got some food 'to-go' for a sick teenager. ***!!Pit-N-Peel's comfort food practically healed him!!*** I also found a pic from our office crawfish party at Pit-N-Peel last Spring. (The whole office went and we ate pounds and pounds of those delightful spicy and flavorful crawdads.) ENJOY THE PICS!

Yelp
Pit-N-Peel is an amazing local gem! They combine two things that most everyone likes, seafood and BBQ. Both of these are great here, and what's more they have a catering business as well. They are conveniently located on Government Street near the Garden District. There's parking out front and in the side. Their seafood options include boiled crawfish is season, and these are very good indeed. I find their fried catfish excellent as is their shrimp. In a recent visit, my friend had them make her a blackened shrimp and blackened alligator plate as her combo and I was jealous! I recently tried their BBQ as I usually get seafood and was very pleasantly surprised. The ribs were really outstanding. While the main courses are always the star of the show, their sides need to be discussed as well. My favorite is probably the cabbage which is sautéd till crisp tender. The beans and rice could be a main course, but are excellent as sides. Cornbread tops off the meal.

Yelp
My family and I have been coming here for a couple of years now but today we decided not to go anymore. The owner was very unfriendly today for some reason but very nice to other customers...not sure why. Just not a very welcoming ambiance and the food wasn't as good as it has been in the past. We were also charged $1 per to go container.

Imani L.

Yelp
I loved the staff here and loved the crawfish even more: the space looks like a sit down restaurant from the outside but when you walk inside, it's clearly a carry out type of spot. I loved the cashier, she was friendly and helpful. The crawfish were a nice size and flavorful. Will definitely be back!

David P.

Yelp
Passing through Baton Rouge and in need of some lunch quickly found a better than average Yelp review in the area. The restaurant had just opened and it was empty. The waitress/cook/everything else lady was happy to get a drink order and deliver a couple menus. The inside of the restaurant is interesting, a couple different rooms with chairs and tables and what looks like a space set up for playing music. We ordered a brisket plate and an alligator po boy. Alligator was batter dipped and had a nice flavor. Brisket had a smoke ring and was nice and tender. Great spot and reasonably priced if you're in the area or passing through.

Yelp
Wow. Just overall a great experience. Our friends and I are driving the Blues Highway and had a stop in Baton Rouge for the night. I had found this restaurant and the menu looked incredible. Von, the owner, and Miss Kat were so welcoming and gracious that we ended up staying well after we had finished eating to talk. Our group ordered po boys (fried alligator, blackened alligator, catfish and fried shrimp) and swapped out the fries for green beans, dirty rice and a to go order of Mac and cheese. The bread on the po boys was so soft and a perfect vehicle for the ingredients. The favorite was the catfish. Then the dirty rice. Oh my goodness I have never had dirty rice like this. Small pieces of beef brisket (with just the right amount of fat on it) sautéed with bell peppers, rice and seasoning. I've never had dirty rice like this before and I will most definitely be attempting this at home. The green beans were also sautéed with bell peppers and had a really nice flavor. Our friend had the Mac and cheese later in the night and said it was very good too. Dessert was a peach cobbler that my husband and I ate in about a minute. Mmmm is all I can say to sum up the food.

Yelp
Wecame across Pit N Peel while visiting Baton Rouge. The owner was friendly, courteous and helpful. The food was outstanding and we will make a return visit. I recommend this spot, you will be pleased.

Kacey U.

Yelp
By far, one of my favorite places. The food hits every time and they're pretty quick. You do have some fine eating!!!

Crista B.

Yelp
Not only was the food phenomenal, but this was one of the most memorable experiences we have ever had!! Vaughn, the owner of the restaurant opened up the kitchen just for us! We were late coming in, and we were looking for crawfish, but unfortunately they were out of season. However, we ordered up some gator, and the platter was amazing! The red beans and rice, mac & cheese and the Hawaiian Punch was the best I've ever had in my life!! We will absolutely stop here any time we come through Baton Rouge and we highly recommend to anybody!

Yelp
I was in town on a business trip to visit some clients. Even though it was getting late, I ventured out beyond the airport for some local food. I stumbled upon Pit-N-Peel and met a few lads sitting outside. One person, whom I now know as the owner Elvondae, told me, "I'm all out. They ate everything!" I was a little bummed but could hardly be upset. After all, it was Easter weekend and the crawfish boils are quite the thing. After I asked if he had any recommendations for other local places, he said, "Tell you what, come on in, and I'll make you something". That night, I got to enjoy a wonderful meal of catfish, dirty rice, green beans and cornbread, though Elvondae didn't want to offer me more out of concern for my carb load :). I could have eaten 5 pieces no problem; carb load be damned. The food was delicious, but just as enjoyable was the opportunity to spend some time with him to talk about life, basketball, and the community as a whole. If I weren't worked after a long flight in, I could have stayed a long time. Hell, I would have helped with the dishes, he was so welcoming. Thanks again Elvondae. If you are in town, take a trip over to Pit-N-Peel. Great folks making great home cooking.

Keisha F.

Yelp
Once again, the customer service and the food was phenomenal. The owner Elvondae makes you feel like you're home. The crab cakes and honey glazed shrimp are a great appetizer choice. The catfish, greens and potato salad are phenomenal. Don't forget to add the refreshing lemonade! The ribs made dry rub were fall off the bone. At Pit-n-Peel there's something for everyone and you'll feel just like you're at home with the excellent service you will receive!

Greta A.

Yelp
My family and I stumbled upon this hidden gem on a Sunday afternoon! It's no frills and generous, delicious portions. The owner came and visited with us for a bit- he was very kind! Highlights were the honey fried shrimp and the ribs. Come hungry and enjoy!

Justin H.

Yelp
The food is always great, no matter what we order. This is a must stop for us when we're in Baton Rouge. From crawfish to BBQ, you can't go wrong!

Rae R.

Yelp
This place is clearly a labor of love for the owner who came out and talked to us while we ate. Tried the crawfish étouffée, the frog leg, and boiled crawfish. Never had crawfish before so the owner gave a lesson on how to eat! Definitely a place to visit if you want to try regional specialties! *Visited as part of a food tour.

Randie L.

Yelp
Not a fan. Ordered by phone and had to force the person to keep taking my order. Hindsight, I shoulda hung up and called elsewhere. Got there and order wasn't ready because it starts when we arrive. And, nobody told us this over the phone. So, someone there forced a game of ping pong to overlook the waiting. Crawfish, gumbo, and kids meals were disappointing. The kids took a couple of bites and would not eat more. We ate as much as we could but it was all too salty. The crawfish etoufee was the only dish we enjoyed.

Kurt W.

Yelp
I was craving some brisket tonight after work. I had been eyeing this place down the street for awhile now. Happy I did. Brisket certainly hit the spot where I needed it. For the sides, I got the mac and cheese and dirty rice. Mac and cheese was really good too. Dirty rice was good too, but think I'll try a different side next time. Definitely a healthy serving. Could easily share one with a friend, or life myself, taking the second half for lunch tomorrow.

Minh N.

Yelp
I got the 3 lbs crawfish plate, 1 sausage, and a shrimp etouffee. The crawfish is fresh and seasoned to perfection. It came with 2 will cooked potatoes and 1 corn on the cob. The sausage was soft, juicy, and flavorful. The shrimp etouffee is amazing. The shrimp is fresh, sweet, soft, and crunchy. The sauce has a lot of flavors that blended in nicely with the rice. It also comes with 1 cornbread. The service is great. It's a must try and bring your own beer/alcohol.

Cyrille R.

Yelp
Food was good. Fried catfish was some of the best I've ever had; seasoned well. Service is excellent. The owner, Vaughn, is VERY personable. Limited parking; good for takeout, but dining in is possible.

Cynthia H.

Yelp
Hidden gem. Hole in the wall, service was outstanding. Ordered the Gumbo, Mac and cheese and Chicken. All were outstanding. Chicken was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Mac and cheese was so gooey good. Gumbo was spot on yummy. A must if your in Baton Rouge.

Christian C.

Yelp
This place is amazing! First off they were open on Christmas Eve and had boiled crawfish!! Not only did they have crawfish, but they were INCREDIBLE! They were full of flavor and surprisingly not too small for December. I highly recommend stopping by!

Amy T.

Yelp
Came here on recommendation of Yelp reviews. We had fried pickles, chicken tenders, brisket plate, pulled pork po'boy and the crawfish platter. It is kinda a one man show, but he does a great job. Would recommend checking it out if you are in town.

Anna S.

Yelp
Wow. We're on a road trip through Louisiana and have been trying a lot of places on the way but nothing can compare to this spot. We accidentally found it in a comment section on Reddit and so god that we made a little detour to try it out. First of all, the baby back ribs were LITERALLY THE BEST ribs I've ever had. The meat was perfectly smoked, cooked, and was so soft that it slid right off the bone when we picked it up. We ordered two sides - beans and dirty rice, and both were great additions to the meal. We also ordered the crawfish and shrimp boils...and my level of expectation for how seafood needs to be cooked has officially been raised. Shrimp were boiled then briefly sautéed in garlicky, fragrant butter and the crawfish were also seasoned and cooked to perfection with a spicy twist. But besides the delicious food, the customer service was exactly what we imagined southern hospitality looks like. The owner is also the chef, and he walked us through the whole menu and helped us choose the best options based on our preferences. Overall, this was such a lovely experience and we can't wait to come back!

Victoria D.

Yelp
I came here on a Friday afternoon for lunch. Our server was very friendly and greeted us right away. The menu had a wide variety of foods--poboys, soups, salads, bbq and seafood. I got the grilled catfish with sides of mustard greens and macaroni and cheese. The grilled catfish tasted fishy, which I know sounds silly, but it clearly tasted like it was old and needed to be tossed. My coworker also said his fried catfish special tasted odd as well. I was not a fan of that so I only ate about half of my fillet. The mustard greens were good although a bit too oily for my taste. The mac & cheese is made with spaghetti noodles and I really enjoyed it! There was also a piece of cornbread that came with it that I really liked since it was moist and not too sweet. In addition, I ordered the white chocolate bread pudding. I would say that was the best part of the meal minus the fact that half of it came out cold so I had to get them to reheat it. Overall I wouldn't come back here. There's just too many good seafood options.

Lisa C.

Yelp
THE BEST FRIED SHRIMP I'VE EVER HAD! Pit-n-Peel is the only restaurant that has ever come close to homemade fried shrimp. It was sublime. The sides are made fresh to order along with your entree. The green beans were fresh steamed and crisp, delicious. The macaroni-and-cheese makes ya wanna slap ya mama. I cannot say enough good things about this place!

Tim C.

Yelp
Honestly I just had the best app-Boy EVER!! The food here is delicious and the hospitality is second to none. It makes me want to stay in Louisiana. If you are near Baton Rouge you have to check this place out ...... yummy !!

Tamara H.

Yelp
Hubby wanted to try a new place. After looking through the news mobile app and finding the advertised price of $2.29/lb he chose this place. Being that it's Mother's day they were only serving crawfish, BOO ! I guess I'm spoiled by Tony's serving everything all the time. I wanted catfish, shrimp and some boudin balls. He got home with the crawfish, corn and potatoes. Crawfish was too spicy salty and mushy like they had been overcooked. Potatoes were a little undercooked with too much seasoning and corn was dry and salty. I didn't eat but 2 tails . I took a bite of potatoes and hubby tried the corn. He also ate most of the crawfish. He liked the spice level but said they were too salty as well. I may go back to try the other offerings when the restaurant is open.

Kiara M.

Yelp
The crawfish are a nice size which is a plus. They are $2.49 a lb for boiled which is the cheapest I've found. If you like spicy they aren't spicy, but if you don't like spicy you might think they're spicy. They aren't the best, but for the price you can't beat it. I went twice because the first time I felt like they rushed the crawfish because every two crawfish had seasoning. The second time was definitely better, but a few weren't. The potatoes aren't seasoned. The customer service is ok. They get you in and out, but they are always on edge. Nothing friendly about it just straight to the point. Idk if it's the virus situation or just them. Parking is extremely limited. They offer other food items besides crawfish.

Philip S.

Yelp
Great little place with incredible BBQ! Owners were super welcoming and we enjoyed all of the items we tried. Potatoes and gravy, baked beans, dirty rice for our sides. The stars of the show were the ribs, brisket, pork and sausage. So delicious. When we return to Baton Rouge we will be back! Thank you!!

Logan B.

Yelp
Some of the worst crawfish I've ever had and made me sick the next day. They had an awful flavor that we think was similar to chicken noodle soup. No spice and completely dry, and the corn tasted like it was boiled in plain water. Guess we should've known better since we were the only people in there! The place was completely silent and didn't even have music playing. Weirdly felt like the owner was lingering and watching us the whole time we ate. The crawfish were also a weird color and every few we would get one that had a rotten taste. Maybe it was a bad batch but definitely will not be back.

Diana M.

Yelp
Stopped here on our way back to Houston TX and it didn't disappoint. Everything was fresh and delicious definitely recommend and if I ever go back this place is a must visit.

Mary Catherine F.

Yelp
Great prices & even better food!! Walking into Pit-N-Peel felt like we went & sat at Vaughn's kitchen table. He was so nice & made sure we were completely satisfied. You can tell he's passionate about his work and will go above and beyond to succeed! We had two crawfish trays which were only $21.99 (wow!!!) for 3lbs with potatoes and a corn. Another party in our group got one of the specials for the day which was 4 catfish strips & 4 butterfly shrimp, plus a side of fries and a piece of cornbread for ONLY $9.89! He also runs lots of specials during the week which include a 15% student discount on Thursday w/ id, a 10% discount on Wednesday if you bring in someone new, & all you can eat crawfish price pending on MP. Needless to say we will be back & were highly satisfied with our visit!

Ron F. K.

Yelp
Mr. Von Raybon goes far above and beyond at his Mid-City jewel, Pit-n-Peel. The hospitality and customer service is top notch, and as far as the food goes, Von represents the absolute best of our culinary culture in Louisiana. Von's extensive menu rivals anyone in the Greater Baton Rouge area touting authentic mouth-watering local dishes. Please do yourself a favor, skip the reservations and/or 45 minute wait times at the other places, and go to Pit-n-Peel for an outstanding meal and great customer service!

Kerry J.

Yelp
If I could subtract stars from this place I would definitely take all the stars from this business! My son's decided to visit this establishment on the 29th of March to try out a local black owned restaurant they never had before because they try to support local black owned an operated business in there community, which we always encourage. It's a very short distance from our home so it seemed appropriate. It didn't start bad but turned into an experience that no young black man should experience ever from a older man especially a black owned business he's trying to support or any other person that decided to spend their hard earned money at this establishment. There was a ping pong table there an they asked could they play a round, the hostess said yes and gave them the ball and paddles, as they begin play the owner came out and shouted across the the store y'all better know what y'all doing or get off my table, who plays ping pong on a regular? So they proceeded to give back the ball an paddle while the owner proceeded to verbally attack them accusing them of carrying drugs an saying he only serves BRPD and Narcotics, an I don't doubt that because my sons said he walked by an acknowledged a BRPD officer as he entered an he didn't have a problem or anything to say to my sons! ‍ They had already ordered the all you and eat whatever it was, but he basically made them feel so disrespected and uncomfortable and unwelcome that they wanted to leave anyway as proceeded to escort them to the door while telling them Basically telling they can't eat here, your not welcomed! I guess you can't be young and black to enter this establishment! This place is a disgrace to all the local businesses in our beautiful city that we support an love so much an Mid City should not be subject to to this poor hospitality an discrimination or any part of Baton Rouge. Customer service is always a major part of any business an the owner seems to totally over look that part of business! Some one should definitely look into this! It's definitely his business an he can run it how he pleases but If your open to the public you should definitely focus on your customer service! If you care about the way you are treated when your out an about in our beautiful city don't visit Pit&Peel. It makes you overthink the local experience which we should never do! We should be able to support an enjoy our local community and businesses.

Julie M.

Yelp
Food is delicious. Service was friendly. I will absolutely become a regular. A must to try

Cj S.

Yelp
The owner was very nice talked to us while we ate. He was very polite the whole time. He let me and my brother play ping pong. I got the crawfish and I have never had crawfish before and he showed me how to open the crawfish.

Missy B.

Yelp
It's not fancy at all so I wasn't expecting it to be great. But I think it could be the best fried shrimp and fish I've ever had! The fish was light and moist and the crust was deliciously flavorful and crunchy. And the shrimp was deliciously flavorful and lightly crunchy too. My husband got a huge plate of boiled crawfish and he loved them. I think it would be really good for takeout. The prices are very reasonable!

Jazi J.

Yelp
The owner of the building cares nothing about customer service! As he let me know when he rudely yelled from the front counter to me and a friend that we should've stayed at the previous table and how we were "dirtying two tables" even after asking the waitress if it was ok to move to a larger table as we were eating crawfish and our two four year olds had fried fish plates. The owner stated he "wanted to keep people like me out of his business " . Which was extremely offensive and rude especially since i was never rude or nasty to him even i expressed how offended I was he began to tell me "you don't have to like it or eat here" long story short I WILL NEVER EAT THERE AGAIN and i hope you don't either. Oh yea i forgot he called the police to have them force me to pay ! Here's my daughter and I untouched food

AM B.

Yelp
- AMAZING! AMAZING Crawfish! - The crawfish was very good, definitely worth the drive and $90.00. - The service was quick and friendly. - We'll definitely be back!

Rebecca F.

Yelp
Best crawfish in Baton Rouge. You could never go wrong stopping here for some classics. We loved it. Would recommend visiting!

Jay R.

Yelp
Great crawfish, well seasoned. Great service. They made me feel like family. I definitely will be back.

Olivia N.

Yelp
Pit-N-Peel has the best homemade Mac n cheese I've ever had. On top of that, their crawfish is perfectly seasoned and their service is quick! During COVID, they took immediate safety precautions by having us wait (briefly) outside until other customers ordered, and handling to go orders quickly!

Malaika B.

Yelp
Tuesday is all you can eat crawfish! they also had a live band that was great as well! Crawfish are seasoned great, hot ...and good! also had a shrimp and oyster poboy! large portions hot and good. well definitely visit again.

Daisha B.

Yelp
The BBQ and seafood here was amazing! Friendly owner and staff and great atmosphere! I had the grilled catfish and blackened alligator platter with macaroni and cheese and green beans and my friend had the brisket and ribs. Everything was absolutely delicious!

Chris R.

Yelp
Best BBQ in Baton Rouge, hands-down. The owner is super-kind, friendly, and funny--and boy can he cook. I had excellent ribs, and the dirty rice I got as a side could have been a meal by itself. It was the best dirty rice I've ever had. For a great price I got an enormous helping, but it was so good that I just kept eating and eating...and never felt full. He clearly put a lot of effort into making it a really nice space. It is homey and sweet inside. Good for solo diners, couples, groups, or families. He takes a lot of pride in his establishment, and it shows. Everybody should be going here! I can't believe it wasn't packed with customers--more than most places in BR, it deserves to be!

Seth M.

Yelp
This place is amazing. We stopped through just based on yelp reviews and my family and I could not be happier with the outcome. The owner/ cook is an incredibly nice guy who started the business from the ground up and gave us THE BEST FOOD EXPERIENCE we had during our Louisiana vacation. I speak for us all when I say that we wish the Pit n Peel was back with us in NY. Crawfish- spicy and tasted great! Po' Boy- Outstanding, perfectly fried shrimp, and fresh cole slaw made specifically for my order. Amazing food, owner is a great cook and person, and would definitely recommend!!

Bryan F.

Yelp
My wife and I really enjoyed our meal and the music. Everyone is extremely nice. Ambience is a little loud, the food is worth getting here. Portions are large and very tasty. Best brisket I ever had and my wife said her onion rings were so awesome. Everyone is nice and easy to get along with. Parking is a little difficult, bust so worth it.

Joe T.

Yelp
Crawfish have a good flavor - super spicy, but there were a lot of mushy (dead) ones. The corn and potatoes were also super spicy, but didn't exactly taste like they were boiled in the crawfish water. Brisket was tough and bland - slight smoke flavor, but not much. Ribs were very tender (bones pulled out nice and clean), and the rub was good, but the meat was not very smoky (it almost looked and tasted like it had been boiled before going on the bbq pit). The sauce (on the side, thank you) was sweet, but again, not real smoky. If you like mustard potato salad, this one is great. Coleslaw is rough cut with a good dressing (not too sweet). My wife raved about the white chocolate bread pudding - she said it was awesome. Service is a little hit-and-miss. Staff is eager to please, but a little disorganized. Ask about off menu items - the owner is happy to describe in detail, and may even create something for you. Two stars: I wouldn't come back for the bbq, I've had better crawfish. If you want to go, maybe I'll go with you and try the the fried seafood or a poboy.

Kristin R.

Yelp
Although the parking can be an issue because it's located on Government St., I had such a great experience here. The crawfish was delicious. I ordered a boiled seafood platter, which was about 3 pounds. They were seasoned very well. It wasn't too spicy where you can't enjoy them. The customer service was very good. I will most definitely return again!

B B.

Yelp
Pit-N-Peel never disappoints! We ordered ribs, baked beans & potato salad. The portions were plenty!!!!! Our daughter was most upset when her Daddy ate the leftovers for breakfast because she wanted to eat them. "Snooze you lose"! Thank you Von
