Top Spots to Eat Near Temple University | Eater Philly

"Owner and head chef, Omar Alsaadi, opened this fast-casual spot to bring his take on modern Middle Eastern street food to the city. With three stores, its location on North Broad Street is right in the heart of Temple University’s campus. Here you can enjoy everything from originals like falafel or chicken shawarma served over yellow rice, as well as build your own bowls or wraps." - George Banks-Weston

I had gotten some food from here not too long ago because I’ve always wanted to give them a try. The food was really good, and you get pretty decent portions too. The service was great too, the pay was very helpful with giving me recommendations since it was my first time there. We’ll definitely be back again.

Google
Update: Went again and got a chicken bowl that was amazing!!! Bumping my score up to a 5 overall. Keep it up Pita Chip Falafel bowl today…I’ve been eating at Pita Chip since they first opened up on Temples campus. Usually a top tier fast casual spot. Today was a bit off, food needed more seasoning and falafel was a little undercooked, but still a good meal. I will keep coming and hope that was just an off day.

The shawarma was delicious!! They were generous with the fries, too.

I had an excellent experience at this restaurant. The staff went above and beyond to help me. One of the employees even accompanied me to my car and helped load the order, and also crossed the street with me to ensure everything was set. I highly recommend this place!”

Google
They came to Aramark Walnut Cafe so it maybe more along the lines of catering. Fantastic! I'm sure my blood pressure is sky high with all the pickled goodness. This is 11/19/2024. I tried the rice bowl, baklava and the sesame chocolate chip cookie. So good 👍🏾 I would recommend to everyone that enjoys Mid Eastern foods. A welcomed surprise from the cafe.

Google
Please hesitate to eat from here! I had ordered the beef shwarma salad bowl and mid way of me eating I crunched on something hard and cold that did not taste like the sauce or salad. Turns out there was a construction nail in my food. This is insane that this was even bypassed in a restaurant like this!!! Do not eat from here. Usually a regular but I will not be anymore due to safety and health hazards!

Chad Grimley

Google
I’m pretty sure I would drive from Pottstown to Philly again just to eat here! I had the half rice half lettuce bowl with chicken, tomato, cucumber salad and I’m not even sure what sauce the guy put on because I just told him to put on whatever his favorite was, and it was absolutely phenomenal I couldn’t even finish it Definitely stop here if you’re in the area!

Google
Good place to have chicken shawarma or Falafel wrap/salad. Great join and they also have franchises opened now. good lunch option and also food looks fresh. Customer service was ok not great but worth visiting for food and food quantity and quality

Yelp
Got take-out here recently with my wife and daughter on a quick one-night stop in Philly. Great meal and exactly what fast-casual should be: reliable (we were a bit lost in a new city; many nearby restaurants were a bit dodgy), large portions (we ate leftovers for two days), and not too pricey. My wife and I each got a chicken shawarma bowl, which were yummy and huge; we easily could have just shared one. Tons of chicken and rice, plus they really loaded up the toppings for us, so we ended up having a good amount of vegetation. We got chicken fingers and fries for my toddler, which was also huge and very satisfying for her. Service at this location was very helpful (we hadn't been to a Pita Chip before).

Yelp
This is a build-your-own-"Halal-bowl" place. Skip the beef-lamb and get the falafel. The falafel was so good I had to stop myself from asking the boyfriend to get another order. The baba ghanosh and pickled turnip toppings are a must, along with at least one of their sauces. Also had some fries dipped in garlic sauce and bits of my bae's pita. It was my first time trying Vimto soda, too, which is a sweet sparkling drink with hints of hibiscus.

Yelp
Recently had an issue with my order and posted a review and one of the owners was very kind and helpful at fixing the issue. Been going here for years and I love the food is great

Yelp
Parking: street metered and hard to find a spot. Service: Good Foid: I get the wrap with chicken. Omg! It was so fresh and good. Whenever I'm in the area, I make sure to stop by.

Yelp
So we had a technician on site today from Texas. I asked him what he wanted for lunch. He said he was vegan. I looked around for delivery to our door but there wasn't much. Then I found this spot and showed him the menu. This food was very good. I got a falafel wrap with fries on it. The garlic sauce was awesome. I suggest getting extra. Def will eat here again. I bet it's better if you eat in instead of delivery.

Yelp
Ive been supporting this business since its inception years ago and i used to love the food. It in fact opened up my pallet to mediterranean food in general. Idk if its new management but the food quality and service has recently been terrible. Texturally unappealing. Meat left out too long. Temperature not preserved well. Plating not presented well either. Especially the broad street location. Hoping it gets better soon.
google avatar

Altinay A.

Yelp
This restaraunt made me get more into Mediterranean food. I love how you have the choice to customize your meals and the possibilities are endless. I usually opt for the bowl and get half rice half salad with chicken. They give you a generous amount of meat. It's actually so much of it. I feel like with rising prices 99% of restraunts are cheap on their protein but Pita Cheap never is. I have ordered from the Temple location over 20 times due to the proximity of my job. I have gone inside the restaraunt as well and I was greeted and received friendly service. I definitely need to try the fries next time

Yelp
Will definitely be chipping in some money for this pita! Got lunch from here and it was really good. Everything came quickly and labeled, which was great because we had a big order. I got the tortilla wrap with veggies and falafel. I really liked the flavors and the number of options, so there was something for everyone! I will definitely get this again as it was really filling (was able to save half for dinner). Great experience and you can't go wrong with anything on this menu.
google avatar

Yelp
We got delivery from here and the portions were so big that we each had leftovers the next day. Food was really good even though it was delivered. Would come again next time I'm in town.
google avatar

Yelp
Pretty good Mediterranean food. Seems to be a family business and they are always happy and welcoming when you walk in. Could improve on prices as I've heard they have raised prices (understandable due to recently difficult economic times). One of the better places in this terrible area of town.

Yelp
Let me start off by saying, get the falafel rice bowl. You will have no regrets because it is an absolute medley in your mouth. This option is perfect for meat eaters and non-meat eaters alike because the falafel is just that good: incredibly crispy and seasoned to perfection. If you're sometimes disappointed by portion sizes from other places, then do not fret because the rice bowls are the solution to your appetite. With the hearty, made-to-order falafel especially, you will be satisfied. Or, if you have a smaller appetite, this is the perfect source for ensuring leftovers. And, their wide array of toppings and sauces will help the pickiest eaters find their perfect combination. If you love spicy flavors, the garlic sauce is one of the perfect options; it has a zing similar to horseradish. They also offer a hot sauce and chutney sauce that are labeled as spicy. Pro tip: order a side of fries with garlic sauce. The fires by themselves are perfection, but combined with the sauce they are a deadly combination in all the best ways. Staff were efficient and courteous!

Yelp
Shout out to the manager of this place for being a kind, hard working and genuinely good person. I'd give 10 stars if I could for the service I received!

Yelp
Got takeout, tried to order on phone but was told I had to come order in person or do it online. OK, no problem. I ordered online, paid and tipped. I liked how many choices I was given when ordering online. But none of my sauces were in my order for either of the wraps. So choices don't matter when I'm eating a dry wrap and paid and tipped someone who didnt do a good job. It's a shame bc the food is very tasty so I assume the sauces would make it even better!

Yelp
I ordered build your own salad bowl with roasted veggie. The greens fresh, the veggies are perfectly cooked and very flavorful. Hummus is great and creamy Baklava: traditional and Nutella. Both are delicious. Very crunchy pastries and they stay intact. You should get these. The container is environmentally friendly

Yelp
Great food, Fresh ingredients, mouthwatering meats and veggie options. This place is great and has bankrupted me many times. French fries are crispy and made to order so it's fresh. The garlic sauce is amazing. Honestly a great place to grab food. It can be a bit pricy but definitely worth it as they pack your food. I gave it 5 stars because even the staff are great. They work hard and make you feel welcomed. Ambiance is okay but it's suitable and the environment is consistent and not shiny in the front but disgusting in the back.

Yelp
I can't explain it. The feelings that I experienced when I took my 1st bite blew my mind. It was like a celebration on my tongue! The chicken was so good! It was full of flavor, juicy and the pickles were a great addition to the meal. I always get it as a salad bowl to try and make it healthier although with the amount of garlic sauce I add it defeats the purpose. My son gets the Malik-something or another. Anyway, he loves it.

Yelp
I am such a fan of Pita Chip. Previously, I was a regular at the University City location because of its proximity to my gym. I'd go regularly for quick and inexpensive lunches or dinners to-go. The staff was friendly and I always left with a hearty but healthy meal. I'm subscribed to Pita Chip's email list and recently noticed they are offering family meals. My husband and I wanted to kick off our holiday weekend with a healthier takeout option, so we decided to give it a try. The smallest meal feeds four, but was only $40. There was a discount for a first-time family meal order so, once the discount came off, we still spent less than fifty bucks, including tip. Some things come standard as part of the meal (rice, lettuce, baklava, plenty of utensils) and then there are some choices. We opted for chicken and roasted veggies, regular hummus, the tomato salsa, tabbouleh, and cucumber and tomato salad, plus the vegan tahini and garlic sauce. I also requested pickles and pickled jalapeños. My husband went out to pick up the order at the Temple location, which we had never been to before. He returned with two enormous boxes, filled with catering trays of food and beautifully packaged salads and sides. They even threw in some falafel, complimentary. Everything was delicious, and we enjoyed several meals all weekend long. So happy to support one of my favorite fast-casual restaurants, and wishing them well during these crazy times. We look forward to getting the family meal again sometime!

Yelp
Ordered delivery from this place (ain't nobody got time to schlep up to temple) from work a few times. It's been very popular among my colleagues so needless to say I had to find a way to insert myself into the fan club. First time I went with falafel (obv) with some veggies and rice, roasted red pepper hummus (was the most popular) cabbage salad, all the other kinds of salad, spicy tahini I think if that exists or maybe just one of the spicy sauces plus tahini. My girlfranz ordered chicken with various other combos. This place is a triple threat bc 1. It's pretty cheap for what you get, $10 for a bunch of shit, 2. It comes super quick, especially good for people with no patience such as myself, and 3. It's fucking delicious. I might have overdone it with the spicy shit in there bc my mouth was 5 alarm fire which did detract from the experience. My second time I learned my lesson and didn't go so hard with the spicy shit. I also omitted the rice for more veggies and I felt genuinely good about the health/nutrition value of what I was eating. It was also spectacular the second time around. Only bad thing I have to say is that the hummus, while good/decent, isn't as good as I would expect from a Mediterranean place but I may have exceptionally high standards.
google avatar

Yelp
I ordered delivery so I've never been inside the actual restaurant/store front. But If you're all about your flavorful food then This place has definitely set the bar high for me. I got the chicken pita wrap with lettuce, tomatoes, roast red pepper hummus, rice, cucumber pickles, onions, pita chips signature hot sauce ( BOMB) and garlic sauce because I'm obsessed and fries. Every bit has packed with delicious flavor. This was by far some of the best halal food I've tasted in a while.
google avatar

Grace J.

Yelp
The garlic sauce best place to grab a quick bite in the area and doesn't leave you feeling gross afterwards
google avatar

Daryl G.

Yelp
I absolutely love Pita Chip i mean where else can you get fresh veggies daily and oven roasted ones...I've been eating at this location for the past 2yrs the stuff is always helpful and friendly especially the college students they hired from the area community support is awesome. However I'm not pleased with the price increase on the rice bowls when i started patronizing this place the bowls were $8.49 Now 2yrs later the Rice bowl is $12.49 that used to be the price when i ordered extra falafel actually it used to cost me $11.49 can blame the pandemic and inflation on this increase..Sadly I'll only eat here once in a while now instead of once a week i feel like someone's getting over on me with the prices

Yelp
First time at Pita Chip and was not disappointed. I gobbled this dish as fast as I can. I ordered the 1/2 rice 1/2 salad bowl with chicken shawarma. It's literally a middle eastern version of chipotle. However they offer a wider variety of toppings that chipotle that is healthy. The portions are generous. I was able to eat this for lunch and have leftovers for dinner. The chicken was flavorful, tender and sliced thin. Very vegan friendly option. Definitely would return when I am back in Philly.
google avatar

Yelp
Pretty solid schwarma. I like the build your own option and tons of different items you can add to it. Service is quick and sandwich came out very tasty. Good portion too. Would come back again!
google avatar

Jason S.

Yelp
Love this spot...been coming here quite often since my first visit. They have great food. Fresh, quality ingredients. Unique flavors that blend so well together. Choose your own destiny, whether it's a rice bowl, pita wrap, or regular wrap...you can even get a salad. I tend to go with the beef usually as I think it lends itself well to the spices; but the chicken and falafel are both really good. If you haven't been in, I encourage you to stop in and give it a try. Staff is very friendly and helpful...the place is really CLEAN also...which is a big deal. They really dona solid job here.

Yelp
Really great spot for lunch! It was a little slow and there wasn't even a big crowd, so not sure what happened. Very satisfied with my meal and my friend loved his also. The tabouleh and falafel were amazing. If you check in you get a free bag of pita chips and hummus!
google avatar

Reshma K.

Yelp
First time ordering and it was amazing. Very large portions, really really tasty food, and was warm even though it was delivery. The 1/2 rice and 1/2 salad bowl had chicken that was very flavorful and tender, and covered with great sauces. Well balanced flavors for all of the foods.
google avatar

Di'Ante P.

Yelp
I've become weary of spots bordered by fast food or schools, however, my friend has a craving for this place and I didn't feel like adding insult to injury by needing to go somewhere else. A pretty decently flavored half and half bowl, brought symbolic reflections of an ethnic chipotle. Easy, quick, decent meal, however if you aren't a huge falafel fan and would find yourself here ordering beef, etc. I'd probably recommend just hitting another quick and easy meal.
google avatar

Lisa B.

Yelp
OMG SO GOOD!!! I cant believe I am only visiting this restaurant now and it has been open since May!! My loss! Everything is fresh and flavorful and delicious!! Everything tastes light and healthy. wow!! Yardley is so lucky!!

Yelp
After a dozen visits, it's time to finally review one of Temple's staples. I am blessed to have so many options to food throughout the city, especially with the onslaught of Caviar and Postmates, but a favorite routine I have with my boyfriend is to stop at Pita Chip to grab bowls. There is a good amount of seating but it can get crowded depending on when you come. To those who have never been, ordering is akin to being at a Chipotle. You pick your style: pita or bowl (rice, salad, or half and half). Then you go forth and get wild with whatever toppings you'd like. The website lists your options if you like to plan your orders in advance. I don't dislike any of the toppings but if you might, I'd suggest asking for an item on the side to see if you like it or not. I love love LOVE the buffalo tahini sauce (I haven't gotten anything else) but my boyfriend says the original one is good too! I also saw a vegan sauce option so my vegan pals, keep that in mind! The prices are pretty decent in my opinion as your bowl option is HUGE (I can never finish it) and it's around $8 or so. I tend to get a rice and salad bowl with spicy hummus and falafel (AMAZING), along with their onions, tabouleh, salsa, and cilantro. Yes, it's as good as it sounds. Yes, if you are reading this and considering coming/ordering here, just do it already.

Yelp
i really was impressed with the food and the service, we came in here spur of the moment and were pleasantly surprised! We were immediately greeted and everyone making the food was very pleasant, the girl at the register was so nice! I had falafel with rice and a few other things in the bowl, fries, and seasoned pita chips! It was really delicious, everyone else i was with said the same! The wraps were a really good size, it was very clean also, the price was a but high but for good quality and great service it was fine!
google avatar

Mike B.

Yelp
Tried the falafel rice bowl for lunch today, it was so good I brought home 2 more for dinner! My wife agrees. Delicious mix of flavors, and enough for 2 meals. Best falafel I've had. Try the grilled veggies as a side, you'll be glad you did. Love this family-run business!

Yelp
My friend and I decided to pop in here for something to eat before heading to the movies. It seemed like a great healthy option for something quick and filling. We decided to split a chicken shawarma wrap. Everything looked really delicious and the staff were nice enough- though the gentleman who prepared our wrap seemed pretty annoyed when I asked what the different hummus flavors were. The food was not tasty at all, unfortunately. There was some spice or flavor that overpowered all of the other flavors in the food and the only other thing coming through was the parsley and mint from the fresh salad. Neither of us finished our halves and I wouldn't return.

Hemma M.

Yelp
good catering, especially for university events. the food was great and everything was delivered on time!

Tina M.

Yelp
It's Mediterranean food but "chipotle" style! This place is so delish! I have ordered catering multiple times and every time there has been rave reviews! It's great amount of food and amazing quality for the price and amount you get. The sauces are amazing! Garlic and Spicy are the best! A must try! It's is fairly healthy and filling!

Yelp
~Thank God the Pita Chip graced us with their presence at the bottom of my office's tabernacle, because I would have never been blessed with what I believe.. could quite possibly be.. the 8th holy sacrament.. First Impressions: Although I did not get to partake in eating at the brick & mortar of Pita Chip, the chipper employees at the stand had the knowledge of priests... & their Bible was the Pita Menu. Something compelled me to listen to them, & go with their recommendation of the Pita Bread Wrap.. As the gentleman was assembling it, I was reminded of the story of David & Goliath; I David, & the Pita Wrap Goliath.. First was roasted red pepper hummus, which provided the base for the battle.. Next the 3 giant heaping's of chicken shawarma, marinated layers of slowly roasted chicken.. Finally a barrage of rice, lettuce, & parsley infused salsa marched into the wrap with white garlic sauce smothered on top. This behemoth could barely fit into the foot long Pita Chip Bag....(pictured) It was a glorious sunny day as I sat in the middle of the City Hall Courtyard. I began to feast & thought to myself...this may of been how Jesus felt at the Last Supper.. the divinity of this Pita had created a holy matrimony between the wrap & its ingredients...it made all other wraps/burritos look like adulterous heathens. Every bite felt like I was being baptized, & anointing my taste buds proclaiming to sing hallelujah! It was truly a Heaven on Earth experience. Proverbs 18:20 "Words satisfy the soul as food satisfies the stomach; the right words on one's lips bring satisfaction." The Don approves of this establishment & will be back~

Yelp
We've ordered the family meal multiple times and it's great, when it actually arrives. Last time they didn't send a complete meal, charged full price, argued with us about it for ten minutes, kept trying to blame the app, and refused to fix it. They even said we should order the missing item separately and pay again!
google avatar

Monica G.

Yelp
Falafel is great. The fries with the garlic sauce are amazing. Definitely recommend. Easy mobile ordering through Yelp.
google avatar

Kevin F.

Yelp
I have never eaten Mediterranean food in my entire life. The only exception has been an occasional Gyro on the boardwalk. I stopped in a pita chip today on my lunch break. I only did so because the other restaurant I was going to was entirely too crowded. I have to say that I was thrilled with my pita wrap. The women that were working there were extremely helpful and recommended some toppings and sauce for my wrap. It was the perfect mix of salty and savory. I would highly recommend trying it if you are in the temple area. It was a large size wrap and cost approximately 8.
google avatar

Eric G.

Yelp
Stopped there on a Sunday... orded falafel. It was cooked to order. Reminded me of home cooked food.. food was very fresh... tasted great
google avatar

Yelp
Never visited the restaurant but they came to serve at the cafeteria at where I work. Truly amazing. Dynamic flavor. The hummus was phenomenal. I literally ate here 3 days in a row.
google avatar

Lacey G.

Yelp
Pita Chip was brought into my office building. I loved my salad!! It was fresh and I loved the variety. I ordered beef shawarma with a ton of toppings. Also, that buffalo sauce was awesome. I loved the heat. I am looking forward to the next time Pita Chip comes back to my office.
google avatar

Amanda B.

Yelp
Good food but I would not order delivery again. My office really likes this place so two weeks in a row we ordered delivery for about 5 people. The food arrived on time but both times, we were missing two orders of fries when we had ordered three. I asked if they could send the fries over and they said they could not (I think this is because delivery is fulfilled by a separate company), and issued a refund instead. A refund is great but with a GrubHub delivery fee of $6+, there was no way we were going to just place a new order. At the end of the day I'm not really trying to make a fuss over some fries but since they forgot twice in a row, I don't have high hopes that they will get it right the third time. However the food was very good and we all enjoyed it. Customer service was friendly as well. I'm sure this is a great place to walk in for a quick bite and hopefully I'll get to do that sometime.
google avatar

Tina L.

Yelp
I had ordered take out! I had rice bowl with beef shawarma! I added pickled cucumbers, seasoned onions, red cabbage slaw, cucumbers and grilled vegetables. I had it with garlic sauce and tahini sauce. I love the garlic sauce so much! The fries with it was amazing. I will def order from them agai
google avatar

Jean J.

Yelp
If you haven't been to pita chip, think Chipotle but with mediterranean food. You can make your own wrap and bowl. I always go for the bowl because i'm greedy AF and i want tons of food. I usually go with the salad and rice bowl. You go down the line and there are so many things to choose from (e.g., rice, chicken, toubbeleh, hummus, pickled onions, etc). Of course, i top it off with spicy sauce and garlic sauce, because...why not both? By the time I'm done making my choice, my bowl is weighing as much as an infant child. All for $6.99, yall! It's such a bargain for so much food. The food also tastes great!
google avatar

Chris S.

Yelp
Shout out to the girl yesterday who helped me get my food after I accidentally ordered pickup instead of delivery. Was also the best pita chip I've had before.
google avatar

Angel W.

Yelp
If you're craving Mediterranean and have no other options, this place will suffice, but outside of that I wouldn't go back. Had heard a lot of good things, so was excited to try it. The pickled veggies were too acidic, the hummus was flavorless, and the fountain drink tasted like cleaning liquid. I got the pita wrap, which is huge, and ended up pulling it apart just to get the chicken. Unfortunately, the pickled veggies, which I normally love at any other place, had ruined it. They use cheap, thin slices of dill instead of spears. Hubby and the beef shawarma rice bowl and felt the same way. First bite was good to satisfy the craving and then each additional bite for progressively worse. With all of the Mediterranean and halal options in the city, I won't be returning
google avatar

Jonny R.

Yelp
The pitas here are the ones I grew up eating. Somaya's as far as I know. So there was a feeling like I was eating at home as I scarfed down the falafel sandwich once, and the beef shawarma another time. Compared to the other spots on North Broad street there, I think Pita Chip is one of the better ones. It's not the best pita sandwich I had in my life, but I suspect one of the better ones on campus. It's all relative.
google avatar

Debra C.

Yelp
I can't believe my son has been at Temple for over 4 years and I never ate here. I love chicken shawarma and this was delicious m. I had the half rice half salad bowl. The add ons were yummy. I had the sumac onions, pickles turnips, hummus, tabouleh and their garlic sauce which I love. The fam all enjoyed their beef shwarma and falafel bowls as well. I guess we'll have to visit son more often.
google avatar

Jenn M.

Yelp
This place is awesome. Quick service, hefty servings, good customer service. One of my favorite places to eat around the Temple area. Ingredients are fresh and tasty. Give it a try if you're around/visiting this area!
