Pitango Gelato & Coffee

CiCi

Google
Came to try their affogato-great presentation and strong flavor. The coffee cake slices are generous, but the menu items are on the pricey side. The guy who helped us was really nice, and there’s plenty of window seating. Overall, I enjoyed it.

Janice Kupiec

Google
I have been going to Pitango for coffee for a while. I think the quality is great, service is always fantastic and most of all, I truly appreciate that there are ceramic cups for those enjoying coffee in the store. It makes me feel like I’m in Europe. The gelato and sorbet is great too, with very interesting flavors. I am Also impressed with the staff. The manager and the staff are super friendly and responsible. I highly recommend checking out the coffee if you love coffee.

Ronda Vittori

Google
Great coffee drinks and fresh pastries made daily in-house. The almond croissant is amazing! Try a cortado, which is served “al vetro” (in glass, not ceramic) which is appreciated most by coffee purists. All of the staff seem to put some love into pulling your espresso, rather than rushing to the next customer. They know good service! They also have an open air bar for fresh air when the season allows (see my photo)—it makes the ambiance really nice.

Julia Caps

Google
The gelato is delicious, pastries are freshly made- coffee is great and the service is fantastic. Every time I have visited I have enjoyed what I’ve ordered in a clean and peaceful atmosphere. Esteban was the best! Very professional and offered my dog a pup cup! Dog friendly, and great vibes. I recommend this place to anyone in the area. Best coffee shop service in town.

Amber Hearty

Google
We were in town for an event and found this delicious gelato! We will definitely be back! They had soo many delicious options of gelato and coffee drinks in a cute little area near the water!

Kati Resur

Google
Stopped in here while waiting for a reservation at a nearby restaurant (I am always painfully early). Got the most delicious Mocha (some kind of yummy chocolate concoction sitting on the counter was added that was so decadent)!! Gentleman was very kind and allowed me to borrow his outlet to charge my phone. Establishment was clean, right on Union (so good people watching), had scrumptious coffee drinks, and gentleman at the counter was so very kind. Highly recommend

MBC

Google
Super clean shop, great staff, who serve amazing gelato! Right in old town! We had the Sicilian pistachio, FONDENTE (SINGLE-ORIGIN DARK CHOCOLATE GELATO) and the affogato with of course pistachio. Intense flavor and creaminess. Staff was super helpful and happy, shop was clean and spacious. Definitely stopping by again when in Alexandria and their other shops abroad

Rosa T

Google
This place seriously has the best gelato I’ve had in the area. It’s so smooth and creamy and they serve several unique flavors. I personally really loved the pistachio gelato. The staff was super friendly and it’s close to so many Old Town restaurants and the water.

Yelp
Old Town Pitango, parking on the street or garage (both paid). $8 for a regular size. They didn't have their pistachio flavor because of the world pistachio shortage; however, their other flavors would be good. I got their dark chocolate and Sicilian almond gelato. SO GOOD. Service - we went on a Thursday evening and the crew were kind and let us sample. Store was clean and modern.

Yelp
When visiting Old Town, you really can't leave without grabbing a drink or dessert -- and this spot immediately caught my eye. I was craving something authentic, not Ben & Jerry's, but real Italian gelato. Food: 4/5 I'm lactose intolerant, so I was happy to see they offered a good mix of dairy-based gelato and dairy-free sorbet options. I got the smallest cup (about $9) which let me pick two flavors. I went with turmeric ginger gelato and stracciatella, and both were absolutely magical. The turmeric ginger was spicy and refreshing while the stracciatella was creamy, dense, and so chocolatey -- proof that a smaller portion can still feel satisfying. My friend ordered the strawberry gelato on a cone, and she loved it. The texture was stretchy and rich in a way that felt true to traditional gelato. But I understand an over $20 price tag is a lot for dessert. Service: 4/5 Quick and friendly. Even when we ordered late in the evening (around 9-10 PM), everything was smooth, and they were patient with us as we sampled flavors. The vibe was good. It wasn't too crowded, which made the experience feel relaxed and unhurried. A sweet little stop while walking through Old Town. All in all, they had an authentic flavor, quality ingredients, and a nice atmosphere. Portions are on the smaller side for the price, but the richness of the gelato makes up for it. Definitely a must-try if you want a real Italian dessert in Old Town.

Yelp
My favorite gelato shop. Everyone that works here possesses exceptional temperament- the make you feel welcomed in a very low key relaxing way that feels very genuine. The gelato is DELICIOUS and not too sweet. Lots of flavors to choose from. They also offer pastries and I love the almond croissants. My daughter and I often stop by after a walk along the lake - a perfect reward for our exertions. I've been to a lot of gelato shops - I highly recommend this one and will be back again and again and again!

Yelp
We have been here several times they never disappoint. Try the Affogato it is delicious! The gelato is delicious and the decor and service are great. When in old town Alexandria stop by you wont be disappointed!!

Alston F.

Yelp
This is my favorite gelato shop in town and they just opened a location in old town Alexandria. The shop has lots of seating. It's super quiet. Sometimes the workers are out there and other times they're like in the back. You just have to like say something and they'll come right out. They have gelato and sorbet and pastries and coffee. I like this location because it's super convenient to walk down to from the waterfront.
google avatar

Aislinn B.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious! Came back a second time on my trip because it was so dang good! Huge sorbet selection in addition the standard and fun flavors. Efficient and helpful staff in a clean and spacious environment.

Yelp
This place stands as THE BEST gelato I have ever had. Wow. I was totally blown away by how thick and creamy it was. I didn't know Gelato could have a "cheesepull" but this gelato did. Each spoonful, the thick goopy goodness wanted to hold itself together and I just insisted on tearing it apart until the whole cup was gone... oopsie! I had two flavors in my cup, and both were just absolutely heavenly. The pistachio was recommended to me by my friends, and they weren't wrong, if you love pistachios... i don't have any idea how this could make you unhappy. The second was a chocolate hazelnut, and somehow, that was even better! This was the one with the stretchy pull to it. The textures, the blend of nutty flavor with smooth chocolate... fantastic. It was really expensive, is maybe the one bad thing I can say about it. But i suppose that's just the way things are in DC. Everything is more expensive there than where I come from, this felt even more so than usual, but would I do it again?? Absolutely.
google avatar

Farhat K.

Yelp
Very solid gelato and sorbet, you could taste the freshness of the ingredient. I got the pistachio and mango, and both tasted solid, but still can't compare to the actual gelatos I've had in Italy. The price is expensive since they import a lot of the stuff from Italy it seems like, and my large portion was not as big as I thought it should've been. The workers there are very nice and friendly, and there's a good amount of seating inside.

Yelp
In search of a place to get something sweet, we stumbled across Pitango. I love their set up with the windows as it really catches your eye to want to go in and see what they serve! Now I'm not a fan of gelato but Pitango has changed my mind. I love that based on their website their gelato is made-from-scratch products in house, which you can tell by the taste. We tried a few different options- strawberry & chocolate, raspberry & lemon and also they offer a Lemonade Float (we added banana gelato to it)...! Definitely check them out.
google avatar

Kyle N.

Yelp
I showed up 7 minutes before closing, and the employees took me in with a smile. I tried their spicy chocolate gelato, despite the look on the employee's face trying to send me a brainwaves message saying don't. I liked it!

Yelp
Pitango Gelato & Coffee is a great spot to treat yourself in Old Town. It's right near the waterfront, so it's perfect for grabbing a cup or cone and taking a scenic walk along the river after. I stopped by on a Saturday--it was crowded, and there isn't much seating inside, so I'd recommend planning to enjoy your gelato outdoors. They offer a wide variety of fun flavors, and the texture of the gelato is incredibly smooth. You can tell they care about quality--they keep the gelato covered to prevent crystallization, which makes a difference in taste and texture. I had the dark chocolate sorbet and the cardamom--both were excellent! Prices are a bit on the higher side, but the quality backs it up. It is $8 for a small. If you're looking for something a little more budget-friendly, there are other ice cream options nearby, but for a special treat, Pitango is worth it. Service was quick and friendly, and I appreciated being able to try a couple flavors before deciding.

Yelp
After dinner, we took a walk into Old Alexandria. It was a cold night, but it was Valentine's Day. I remembered a new gelato shop opened near the waterfront, so we decided to give it a try. The shop is beautifully lit with lots of windows and is super clean. We picked a medium size to share with 3/4 dark chocolate and 1/4 espresso gelato. We also shared an Americano. We sat at the table and enjoyed our gelato in the shop, which made for a wonderful end to our evening.

Yelp
I love the Reston location so I was very excited when they opened a location in Old Town and it's just as good! My favorites are pistachio, chocolate hazelnut, and hazelnut. I want to go back to try the banana and other flavors!
google avatar

Kaprice G.

Yelp
We came after getting pizza at Emmy's and while I don't have a picture to share of the ice cream, I do remember it was really good. Even though there was a line forming as we came in, I noticed everyone got greeted coming in through the door so that was nice to see. The ambiance of the location is cute as there's bar seating and it wasn't too overwhelming while waiting to order. I got the hazelnut chocolate and it was really good!! My boyfriend got the affogato but as he's not much of a coffee drinker, it was a bit too strong for him.

Yelp
PITANGO!!! FINALLY IN OLD TOWN ALEXANDRIA! Aka as the city of ice cream! But PITANGO isn't an ice cream place! It's a Gelato place! ;) lol Do I need to tell you about the brand?? Noooo! Do you need to try it?? Yessss! Lol Seriously, PITANGO has been long enough in business, and their locations are usually at the best fun spots in the area! Like Reston Town center VA and the harbor at Baltimore MD! First of all, I highly appreciate their late hours!! Yes! That's what we need in old Town! Gelato and coffee till 11 pm during the week and midnight during the weekends! By the time you finish dinner and walk at this phenomenal beautiful town, it's usually around that late time, and all the other places will disappoint you with their hours ! PITANGO isn't only a Gelato shop ! It's an amazing coffee that brings you the wonderful coffee beans of Vigilante ( Google them) to Old Town! I love their Espresso and they can make wonderful Espresso drinks and, of course, don't miss trying their affogato ( Espresso poured over a scoop of Gelato) The ambiance is nice and simple, but I really love their seats facing the window looking at S. Union St! What an amazing setup! The store and the bathrooms are always clean no matter what time of the day I go! Service is wonderful and always with a smile! They probably know me as the Late-night Espresso guy! ;) lol Try it, vote for the review , message me, or compliment me with any comment or question, and don't forget to ... Pray for me ;)

Yelp
Stopped by and got to try this place out for the first time and it was good! Got the toasted marshmallow gelato in a 'regular' cup and loved the flavor. They were relatively quick with the service too for the 4th of July. The only things that threw me off were no cash accepted (not super clearly stated anywhere inside), and $8.10+ tax for a gelato cup about a 3-4oz size? This is soo small even for a gelato spot.
google avatar

Emily L.

Yelp
I went to the soft opening and loved everything about this Pitango! I am already a fan of Pitango and their gelato, and this is a great addition to Alexandria riverfront. Alexandria riverfront has always lacked in the quality ice cream scene, despite its real estate and proximity to the water. It's about a block from the waterfront and the perfect way to round out a meal. Great place for a date. At the soft opening, I struck up a conversation with a girl about her dress, unknowing she was part of the Pitango family. Fun things I learned from talking to her and the new owners: 1. This is the most beautiful interior of the Pitango chain. 2. All of their gelatos are handmade and don't use preservatives or dyes. 3. Each gelato is in its own freezer for temperature and quality control (Hence the thick lids on each flavor) I tried most of the flavors and enjoyed each one. My favorites were Sicilian pistachio, stracciatella (vanilla with chocolate chips), and lemon sorbet. The lemon sorbet was so refreshing and addictive. I'm told that the lemonade float is the move. I don't love pistachio but found Pitango's to be delicious, perfectly nutty, and creamy. Other things I tried and loved: lemonade and ham/cheese croissant. It was arguably the best ham and cheese croissant. Keep it mind, they're just starting out so I anticipate a few kinks. Their grand opening is June 25th- I can hardly wait!!

Yelp
Authentic Italian gelato that is very delicious and flavorful. My personal favorite in old town. Very cute inside and had kind customer service. If you're looking for gelato in Alexandria this is your spot!
google avatar

Autumn S.

Yelp
Let me just start by talking about their mojito sorbet. It was amazing.. very helpful during dry January lol. I paired it with ginger tumeric sorbet and it was amazing together. I want us try all their flavors. Which they will let you. It is cleaner than a hospital in there and the staff was very helpful with suggestions. 5 stars!

F. P.

Yelp
Best ice cream in Alexandria according to my expert daughter. Very flavorful and not too sweet. Wish we lived closer!
google avatar

Dona P.

Yelp
Continue to feel jealous they left us in cap hill but luckily spend a lot of time in old town. ALSO summer hours are in full effect with 11pm and 12am closing times. Dairy free dark chocolate and dairy free grapefruit. Do it, don't think about it. Just do it !!!
google avatar

Kimya P.

Yelp
Amazing experience all around. First, very clear, allergen menu on the wall, identifying which sorbet and gelato have eggs, nuts, and gluten; it made ordering very easy for those in our party with allergies. Second, everything was delicious -- especially loved the passionfruit and lemon sorbets and affogato. Third, the space is clean and modern with a few tables and stool seating along the window. Clean bathrooms with a changing table in at least one of them. Finally, staff was warm and welcoming. We will definitely be back the next time we're in the area.
google avatar

Barbara S.

Yelp
Gelato was great. Service was quick and easy. You can try out flavors before you choose your flavors. Plenty of seating and nice and clean area. Will definitely be back next time I am looking for a sweet treat.
google avatar

Tory P.

Yelp
I got the affogato with vanilla gelato and it was SO GOOD. It reminded me of the Häägen Dazs coffee ice cream but even better. I've never had ice cream like this before and it was so fun pouring the espresso over the ice cream 5 from me!!! The workers were very nice too!! It was such a cute place and I will definitely be going back when I'm near one!!
google avatar

Karen R.

Yelp
I came into this spot on my way to my car for some coffee. I ordered the latte and it was one of the best I've had. I asked for less sweet and I received that
google avatar

A P.

Yelp
Really fresh gelato and delicious and very nice and helpful staff. Great location and perfect for walking afterwards to burn off the calories from these rich and delicious desserts.
google avatar

Savana G.

Yelp
Friendly service and high quality gelato! Went up and down the street comparing vegan/nondairy ice cream shop flavors. Went into 5 or 6 shops and this was the only one that had more than 2 vegan flavors... they had at least 10!!! I would still choose this place even if I wasn't vegan. This is the real deal.
google avatar

Yvonne Z.

Yelp
Stopped by during their soft launch. Pictured are the hibiscus and lemon sorbet Gelato. Walking in there are many people ready to serve you. I could definitely see pitango as a place where people would love to sit down and spend time with others. I hope that they do well in a town full of ice cream shops.
google avatar

Danielle C.

Yelp
Cute little place in Old Town Alexandria. We weren't expecting much but everything we tried was super tasty - hazelnut, coffee w chocolate, pistachio, and the blood orange sorbet was very refreshing. We've definitely had worse gelato in Italy! 10/10 will come again.

John S.

Yelp
A very nice couple of hours hanging here this afternoon. Nice coffee, huge windows open on a lovely Fall day, great house soundtrack, and a very amicable barista.

Kristen R.

Yelp
Pitango is well known for its excellent gelato, but I have to say that you are missing out if you have not tried their coffee and espresso. The syrups are made on site (hazelnut is my favorite) and croissants are baked fresh every morning. Try the almond croissant. It is amazing!!
google avatar

Brittany P.

Yelp
Came for the matcha latte and it didn't disappoint. It has the cutest ambiance and excellent customer service. Convenient parking was a plus as well.

Jason K.

Yelp
Store was clean, product was good. That's not the problem. Are your employees doing me a favor just by being there? I decided to try Pitango rather than my usual favorite place. I gave Pitango my business, my money. To eat in. While paying I put on a 15% tip and got paper receipt. No "thank you for your business." No "thank you," at all. She handed me my receipt: "here you go!" What? Not OK. Thank your customers, if you want repeat business. My espresso was ready and she could have walked 4 steps straight-line to bring it to where I was sitting. Nope. Set it on the counter, and called out "Espresso!" 15% tip, and no thank you, and I had to get up and fetch my espresso. Next time, there will be no tip and no business. I will be returning to my favorite ice cream shop around the corner. Sorry Pitango. Fail. Better think about training your employees to deserve the tips people give, they are not gifts for looking pretty. Teach employees to generate good-will with customers in business. Even if I had not rendered the tip, it's really good business to sincerely say thank you, to everyone, and to bring all your customers their coffee.

Mary W.

Yelp
The gelato this evening was very soft. I purposely visit Pitango because its product is always firm and flavors are extremely good. But I was very disappointed with my most recent trip to a cherished favorite. I guess paying a lower electric bill is more important.than guest experience.

David G.

Yelp
Great Gelato. Lemon is the best. Vanilla Bean is a close second. We go here every week for are fix!! Staff is courtesy and friendly. Thevlocation is in Old Towne Alex. Great little patio area outside to enjoy the good.

Sarah H.

Yelp
The gelato is just OK in my opinion. $8 for a very small portion is too much. I'll go elsewhere next time.
google avatar

Stephanie C.

Yelp
Excellent service and yummy. Appreciated the enthusiasm of the young lady who gave me the history behind the Sicilian pistachio!
google avatar

Steven T.

Yelp
A great place to go if you want to play lemonade stand. Their lemonade is good, just playing, they don't sell that (at least I think they don't). I had a cappuccino and finished it in.....well, it took awhile. It was so hot it almost burned me. I didn't order hot, I mean, come on. Their lemonade, I mean coffee, is degrading. I mean who wants to drink coffee that makes them feel bad. Maybe if it was being sold for 25 cents, ugh!
google avatar

Tanya C.

Yelp
after reading all the great reviews, i was so excited to try this place. however, it was a disappointment. i ordered the dark chocolate and chocolate chip flavors. the flavors weren't very rich, and the texture wasn't as creamy as id expect from gelato. i've had gelato a few times in my life, and this was probably the worst. it was also $10 for a small little cup. i know gelato is typically pricier than regular ice cream but this wasn't worth it. wish id gotten dessert someplace else.

MyLea B.

Yelp
Tasty options, nice workers, and overall a nice place to stop and get a treat! The milk tea gelato was one of my favorites

Aamna R.

Yelp
The pistachio gelato was incredible! It had a really natural flavor and wasn't too sweet. My runner up for best flavor was hazelnut. My friends and I were a little indecisive about which flavor to get but the young gentleman who assisted us, Finley, was very polite and helpful. I also like that there is a lot of seating. It's rather large for a gelato spot! I'd recommend this place and I'd def come back

Christopher S.

Yelp
OMGosh Anne And Bailey from the Old Town location treated me so nicely. Their Warm and Jovial personality made the experience worth while for a second visit. The pineapple and chocolate sorbet they offered were my favorite with a dash of pleasant costumer service. I highly recommend you visit the Old Town VA location and get your Gelato from them. #AnneandBailey show!!!
google avatar

Julian S.

Yelp
Simple, clean and inviting. I ordered a scoop of the Bacio Bianco and it was really good.

Ari O.

Yelp
The gelato was amazing to say the least. The service was fast and patient. The pistachio gelato was to die for.
google avatar

Robert B.

Yelp
I got pistachio and banana and it was SOOOO GOOD! Loved the cafe feel of the shop and the workers were super helped and nice. The bathrooms (two private rooms) were clean. I would definitely recommend going if you like authentic gelato
google avatar

Alison M.

Yelp
Yum! This place is so clean and new. Flavors are unique and amazing. Loved, loved, loved the black tea and cardamon flavors. Milk chocolate was so very chocolatey and thick. Like OMG chocolatey. It's expensive, but I think I have a new favorite gelato place in Old Town.
google avatar

Maryjan V.

Yelp
Service was quick and inside was cute! Decent gelato! I ordered the milk and chocolate chip flavor and the banana one as well, both were good and the green tea matcha flavor. Pricing is not bad too. The chai latte was pretty good too.
google avatar

Kenny N.

Yelp
The service was friendly and fantastic! However, I found the gelato decent. Compared to other competitive gelato places I tried, some flavors seem to be bland from this place, but some definitely were very nice as well, but it sure does feel light!

Beth N.

Yelp
So happy Pitango has come to Old Town. I have been to their Penn Quarter spot and had the best affogato and custom made espresso with chocolate. This weekend I went with my daughter to the new Old Town shop and she loved her sorbet and I got an iced mocha that was simply the best. She then got an iced matcha and said it was great. Also tried their croissants which embodied all that a croissant should - buttery, soft, light. I think they bake them in-house? Can't wait to try their gelato - free from colorings, flavoring and preservatives. I like their story and that it is locally sourced.
