On the Grid : Pitchoun Bakery & Café

"One can't help to notice that the comforts of an authentic French boulangerie and patisserie is within walking distance, especially if the script logomark has an exclamation mark at the end of it. It demands hungry eyes, n'est-ce pas? The menu at Pitchoun is nicely laid out and they've got a whole lot of traditional salads, as well as Parisian breads and pastries, both sweet and savory. The sandwiches really help to support our high-carb days." - TypeEd

Where to Find Exquisite, Buttery Croissants in Los Angeles

"This family-owned bakery offers baked goods made in the classic French style. Co-owner Frederic Soulies dips his daily batch in housemade syrup, fills them with almond paste, and tops it off with almond slivers for a dreamy, nutty croissant variant." - Eater Staff

Google
This French cafe is a true find in downtown LA, offering a delightful escape from typical chain coffee shops. I stumbled upon it while searching Google for unique cafes, and it exceeded all expectations. I highly recommend an early morning visit to savor the bold coffee and exquisite pastries. It's a rare chance to experience the tranquility of downtown LA before the hustle and bustle begins. The outdoor seating area is particularly peaceful, and the friendly, welcoming staff promptly brings your order to your clean table. The array of delicious French-inspired treats can be a bit overwhelming in the best way possible. They also offer hot food items, including breakfast sandwiches, all showcasing a clear French influence in both taste and presentation. While the prices are a bit on the higher side, they're consistent with downtown LA's environment and completely justified by the cafe's unique charm and quality.

Google
Really nice French-style bakery and cafe on Pershing Square. All the pastries look delicious, and their omelettes are loaded with delicious fillings. Nice touch to include some salad and bread with it. High-quality all around. I come here whenever I visit LA.

Google
Great collection of baked goods! Lunch menu is also nice. Smoked salmon was great! I always enjoy a good Tuna melt too. & Oh man, the bread had a perfect crust on the outside while super soft inside... Great atmosphere, outdoor seating... Overall an amazing experience.

Google
Courtney welcomed us as we walked in and was patient as we looked through the many delicious options out there. We ordered a vanilla oat latte and a doppio espresso, both really great quality coffee. We also got an egg and tomato focaccia as well as a marble cake, it was warmed up for us but still was a bit cold when served — however, still tasted great! Just visiting LA but would come here all the time if we could! They also had a cookie croissant — I’d never seen that before and that was neat!

Google
Service is great atmosphere too but food is something else. They have a sign asking people to live 5 star reviews in exchange for a free macaron so I wouldn’t trust the 5 star review. None of us could finish our dish. To get an accurate picture filter from lowest review. We should have done that before hand. Neither the pastries or the dishes are good

Google
Stopped by before noon, & it wasn't too crowded, so I enjoyed a nice bite in the outdoor seating area. Very cozy & chill atmosphere. I haven't tried the pastries, but everything looks great. The Tomato & Egg Focaccia and seasonal dragonfruit espresso was really good! Customer service was great, too, everyone is very nice.

Located in the heart of downtown Los Angeles, Pitchoun! offers a delightful escape into French-inspired charm. The interior is beautifully designed, capturing the essence of a Parisian cafe. The menu features a wonderful selection of fresh pastries and cakes, each crafted with care and just the right balance of sweetness. We especially enjoyed the avocado toast, artfully presented with a perfectly poached egg on top—it was both delicious. The cappuccino deserves a special mention, with its generous froth creating a luxurious, creamy texture that paired seamlessly with the cafe’s baked delights. Overall, Pitchoun! delivers on both atmosphere and taste, making it a must-visit spot for anyone looking to experience a taste of France in downtown Los Angeles. I’d definitely come again for another round of their irresistible treats and expertly brewed coffee.

Google
Got to try the seasonal strawberry salad - so delicious. The aperol spritz was served perfectly and it was fun to try their beignets! Very comfortable place with a little outdoor area.

Yelp
The desserts were high quality! Really recommend the chocolate tart as it was just the right amount of sweet and bitterness. The decor was cute too!

Yelp
Great location! Love the aesthetics! we traveling here for vacation and I looked up this place on YouTube, definitely didn't regret it from our visit!

Yelp
Very tasty bakery and atmosphere along with kind staff. They have many options ranging from croissants to cheesecakes and other cakes.

Yelp
Ordered turkey croissant and chai tea. A croissant with the yummiest ever. And the place is so cute. My sister got an omelette. It came with bread and we had it with butter and what I think was homemade jam. I wanted to try ALL the sweets they looked so good! The place is so cute too. Gives old French vibe.

Yelp
This is a great French cafe for lunch or breakfast located right in Downtown LA. They serve a variety of pastries and have a breakfast and lunch menu with lots of options to choose from. I went for the Parisian Brie sandwich and got a plain croissant since I always get one when I stop by a French bakery. I also got a Dragonfruit latte for my drink. I had my food brought out since I was dining in and it came out within 10 minutes. The staff were friendly when they dropped off the food and ordering at the counter was a breeze. The parisian brie was a delicious sandwich, simple yet filling and tasty. The brie was plentiful and paired well with the ham and the toasted baguette gave a great crunch. The sandwich was also bigger than I expected too. The dragonfruit latte was alright, I wanted a bit more dragonfruit flavor as it was quite subtle in the latte. The croissant was decent, not the best I've ever had but still airy and crispy on the outside. If I had one that was fresher, it would have been better. The overall ambience is inviting and there is plenty of seating available inside or outside in the patio. They also sell cakes if you want to celebrate something special and you grab your utensils and water at the counter towards the back if you are dining in.

Yelp
Service, food and atmosphere are all top notch at this friendly, flavorful French bakery and cafe in the heart of DTLA. Came in yesterday for a snack and returned early this morning for breakfast. Delightful all around. Definitely recommend to locals and visitors alike!

Yelp
This Bakery is situated in the heart of downtown LA This is my second time going there, and it doesn't disappoint at all It's a truly French bakery , and considering I'm French myself, I guarantee you, their pastries and croissants and bread are truly and officially straight from a France influence Try anything and you will not regret it I had the avocado toast with an egg sunny side up on top: I was so fresh and delicious I also tried their croissants and bought a baguette to go Too bad it's a little far from me. I would go every other day. I highly recommend you try Itchoun‼

Yelp
The worst Parisian-style cafe I've ever dined at. Service is friendly, cafe ambiance is fine, but food is just so mediocre. I got the 16 oz latte and it definitely did not give me the caffeinated boost I expected. It was watery and flavorless despite having a thick foam for latte art. Parisian omelette was a total miss. The omelette was so overcooked that it had no fluffy texture at all. Country bread slices were rock hard... so dry and so porous. It was completely stale. I am so suspicious of the reviews for this establishment as they were left by Yelpers with zero friends and barely any reviews. I will not come back.

Yelp
Cute French cafe with average prices (for a French place). I got a quiche which was dense and warm. You order and pay at the front. Make sure to grab your utensils before sitting down! I didn't know that beforehand so I had to leave my food unattended outside to grab my utensils. I would've appreciated a heads up beforehand or for the server to offer to bring utensils over for customers who didn't know. The restaurant wasn't busy and the outdoor area wasn't private/enclosed. This place is located in Downtown and there were some sketchy people by here and across the street at the park.

Yelp
How can I not have reviewed Pitchoun before?! This has been my go-to when I'm in DTLA for the past six years during the weekend of the LA Marathon. I usually call in here the day before for a yummy brekkie. As Jon M. pointed out, yes, the prices are high. But I suppose since it's a yearly thing for me, I just deal with it. (For example, my breakfast this morning for my husband and I was $60 and some change.) The bread though is divine. I think that's what keeps me coming back. I will say that I THINK they used to have a different type of butter -- and now it's just ordinary Challenge butter. You'll order at a counter, be given a number, and you'll then grab your utensils and condiments. You'll also bus your own table. If it's a nice day - and when is it not in LA - enjoy one of the tables in the courtyard. Also tables for 2 and 4 inside. Everything I've ever had here has been delicious, from the muffins to the desserts to the Parisian omelette to the pitch bowl... oh yes. Everything, really. 2025: 5/100

Yelp
Super cute French cafe with baked goods, sandwiches and some other menu items. The shop was well staffed and they were all super friendly! There was a line when we dropped by, but it moved relatively quickly and we got in our order within 5 minutes. Palmier - Would get again. It has a nice flakey crisp that doesn't feel dry. A balanced amount of syrup at the bottom add a little bit of sweetness and a nice crunch to the bite. Latte - Behold the latte that comes in a bowl. Yes feels more like drinking a soup than a coffee. Otherwise it was decent, a dark roast with steamed milk pairs well with the pastries. Tuna melt sandwich - was delicious. Bread was well toasted. The melt itself contained tuna, mayo and some herbs to give it an extra depth of flavour. Comes with salad! Would recommend!

Yelp
Really cool spot with so many options to choose from. They have breakfast, lunch and pastries to choose from. I ordered a blueberry muffin and an almond croissant and both were delicious. I also ordered a latte and a black coffee which went perfect with the pastries. I really liked the vibe of the shop it was very open, welcoming, and plenty of seating. The service was fast and friendly.

Yelp
As soon as we walked in we saw that there was a line of people to make an order. It didn't take that long for us to get to the counter and make our order. I was looking for some good croissants. I ordered a jalapeño cheese croissant, a chocolate croissant, and two plain ones. They were not flaky and buttery. They needed more butter flavor. The chocolate one had very little chocolate in it the cheese one was kind ok. The size of the croissants were big. They had more French pastries. They also were Offering the kings cake on month of January. It's A French tradition that they enjoy the cake and they served it to the whole family and they save one piece and save it for an homeless or a needed person. I thought that was a nice tradition. They also have a restaurant at the same French bakery. They served French lattes, coffees and breakfast. I didn't see if the menu had some dinner options. I also ordered a black coffee. The coffee was great. Just the way I like it. It was Very strong. The ambiance was very familiar. And the service was great. Prices were average.

Yelp
Lovely cafe- perfect brunch spot. Loved the croissants and the nice seating both outdoors and indoor. The pistachio croissant is one of the best I've had. Service was nice and not rushed. Solid place to come have brunch in DTLA. Also, very close to the public parking in Pershing square so it's super convenient.

Yelp
Finding parking for this place was a little stressful luckily we went really early like 9 am. When we walked in it was really cute and welcoming. You step into a lot of baked goods. I had a croissant/beignets and my husband had the raspberry croissant they both were really good! My son had the French toast and that was really good too! The place was really cute. Overall this place is good.

Yelp
I love coming here for breakfast. Their breakfast sandwich is really tasty and all of their pastries are delicious. I love treating my partner to sweet treats so this has become a reliable weekend spot for us.
google avatar

Yelp
I've been here a couple of times, so here's the rundown: First visit: I tried the breakfast sandwich on a croissant (absolute deliciousness, especially with the bacon), flan (hands down one of the best I've ever had), and a matcha latte (not for me, won't be ordering that again). Second visit: I stuck with the breakfast sandwich on a croissant (still amazing), tried a banana nut muffin (just okay--I'd go for something else next time), and had a chai latte (really good, definitely a reorder). It's worth mentioning that it's on the pricier side, but the staff is always super friendly and helpful, which adds to the experience. Plus, there's both indoor and outdoor seating, so you can pick your vibe!
google avatar

Connie D.

Yelp
They have the best Almond Croissant! Best service and Ambience as well. Just get there early because they get sold out fast and parking is limited and pricey $20 if you park inside parking structure next to Pitchoun .Parking meters are cheaper in front. This is a French bakery, pastries, cafe and brunch eatery place everyone can enjoy everyday. It's my must go to in LA. 5 star quality from bake goods, br
google avatar

Andrea C.

Yelp
Nicely vibed cafe for meetups. There's indoor and french-like outdoor seatings. Once you walk in, you'll be attracted to their variety of pastries. I've chose their croissants and I'll rate it above average. Coffee was average.
google avatar

Yelp
Pitchoun! is a wonderful choice for breakfast or lunch if you find yourself in downtown Los Angeles. It is on Hope Street across from Pershing Square just down from the Biltmore. You order at the counter, then find a table. Indoor and outdoor seating options. The friendly staff deliver your order to the table. There is a self serve water/condiment/utensil area at the back of the restaurant. The display case of pastry choices is truly mind blowing! If a French patisserie is your idea of perfection, you'll find Pitchoun! is heaven.
google avatar

Emily B.

Yelp
Some have called this, people I know, call this place the little Paris of DTLA. Pastries are delicious. Breakfast sandwich 10/10. Great service and friendly people. It's the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, a cute spot to sit down with my partner and enjoy a beignet
google avatar

Cathy H.

Yelp
Stayed at the Biltmore for a conference and stopped by Pitchoun! for breakfast. I placed an online order for a mocha, sakura latte (seasonal), and ham and cheese croissant. When walking in, I wished I had dined in--the cafe feels as though you're in Paris despite being in the heart of DTLA. The selection of pastries all looked delicious and I can confidently say the ham and cheese croissant was indeed delightful. Prices are steep (average $7-8/drink), but comparable to other cafes in the area. The croissant was almost $7, but massive. Service was quick. I'd return again if I were in the area!
google avatar

Jon M.

Yelp
Pitchoun has a lot of nice reviews but my experience is this is another overrated spot. First, the prices are very high and I refused to pay $8 for a small cup of OJ and just had water with my French toast and eggs, bread. That is a pretty basic breakfast costing me a whopping $30 plus. The FT seemed stale and the bread slices were small. The location is nice with a cute enclosed patio across from Pershing Square. Service was perfunctory where you order and pay at the cashier(expensive for not full table service). I may try a pastry there again but will pass on a sit down breakfast.
google avatar

Li H.

Yelp
Came here with a friend after some sushi and got some perfect desserts to finish off our meal i loved the strawberry fraisier!! The whole cafe was so cute decor-wise and had super aesthetic outdoor seating. The staff was nice too! Looking forward to come back next time!
google avatar

Vincent W.

Yelp
Finally visited during business hours as they close early daily. Does have a French aesthetic and properly baked European pastries. There's also drinks and lunch options. Ordered raspberry croissant, apple turnover, almond croissant, and ham cheese croissant sandwich. All the bread was perfectly baked and flaky with my Paris nostalgia. A little over priced but worth it. Great for snacks, gifts, and there's gluten free options available. There's also dine in seating/patio. If you're in the area during day, stop in for lunch or a snack!

Yelp
Pitchoun is 10/10! We first tried pitchoun last year during our visit to LA. We loved it so much we had to go back this year! Twice! Walking distance from the Omni Hotel in DTLA, Pitchoun is our trusted breakfast spot. If this were in Chicago, I'd probably go weekly. The baguettes oh my god!!!! Do not miss the opportunity to try their baguette. All pastries tasted as good as the looked. The coffee cake was out of this world and paired so nicely with my almond milk cappuccino. The Parisian Brie changed my life! Will def be trying to recreate at home, though I doubt I'll get as good as Pitchoun's! The staff is friendly. Our food was ready promptly. Other patrons were quietly chatting or working. The ambiance is incredible. On a nicer day, the patio would be elite! Definitely recommend!
google avatar

Lorna P.

Yelp
I am always looking for a decent butter croissant. This was up there for me. Lots of beautiful lamination inside and perfect crispness on the outside. I like the size of my large Chai latte but a little awkward holding it since it was like a soup bowl (I have little hands lol) a great spot to be when in DTLA.
google avatar

Elizabeth G.

Yelp
We came for their 10th anniversary party and it was such a vibe! delicious food and drinks, plus the friendliest group of service industry professionals in DTLA. Check this place out!
google avatar

Truc N.

Yelp
The chimichurri chicken sandwich was so delicious. Can taste the fresh ingredients and the ciabatta bread was freshly baked. The service is fantastic. The cafe has a nice rustic clean setting to enjoy my lunch. Would come back here again.
google avatar

Danielle Y.

Yelp
This place is incredibly welcoming as soon as you arrive. It's beautifully decorated, making you feel as if you're in France. The food and pastries are not only amazing but also picture-perfect. I have to say that they serve the best French toast I have ever eaten; it truly took me by surprise.
google avatar

Ernest K.

Yelp
Great spot for delicious food, fresh French Pastries, cozy French atmosphere and very warm and welcoming customer service. Thank you Brianna. One of my favorite places in LA.

Yelp
Yummy food and service! The ambience is so inviting. Love this place! Would recommend to anyone.

Yelp
This place is adorable and literally next door to the Biltmore hotel. Very authentic and my croissant breakfast sandwich was delicious and iced mocha was great. ChArming place.
google avatar

Michelle V.

Yelp
Loooove coming here for lunch! Pastries are very yummy, love coming in the mornings for the chocolate almond croissant and the pan con tomato is my go to lunch sandwich
google avatar

Kevin B.

Yelp
I used to live in France and I bake French pastries for fun sometimes so I am pretty picky. I tried the flan pâtissier. I was not a fan that they added chocolate as the bitterness did not add anything. The crust also seemed a bit burnt. That being said it's still flan so it's still good. I was impressed with the price which is lower than other French bakeries. They also have a real cute set-up if you are eating there.
google avatar

Miranda M.

Yelp
My friend told me I had to try the croissants here. The plan was to get an almond or regular croissant but after seeing all the variety of pastries on full display, I decided on the Nutella croissant roll. No regrets :) it was as good as it looked! Ridiculously flaky and buttery. You have to try it. Cute and warm ambience.
google avatar

Debra R.

Yelp
What a wonderful family owned addition right next to the LA Biltmore. Outdoor tables screened from the street by plants, and a small courtyard lead you along to where all the pastries are lined up, ready to tempt you. Be sure and order one of the many delicious pastries made from scratch every morning. The croissant took me back to France. Light, flaky and tender inside, it was perfection. My avocado toast was delicious with the egg perfectly poached. Friendly servers take your order, give you a number, and you find a table inside or out. Our order came quickly. We will definitely be back.
google avatar

Jenny L.

Yelp
I don't know if they still have French pastry chef or just substitute one. The taste os not as French as it is before. They do have canele which is my favor.
google avatar

Paulina T.

Yelp
I'm a sucker for French pastries (like I actually dream of kouign amanns) so I've been eyeing pitchoun for some time! Everything I tried was really good. Not the best I've ever had, but the quality is good and you get variety! The only thing I didn't love was the croissant cookie thing. The cookie itself was just okay. A bit dry. The turkey & cheese croissant was realllly flaky. I had it cold and it was still so good... I can only imagine freshly baked! The kouign amann was solid-- perfect amount of sweetness but not as flaky as others I've had. I'd definitely come here again! Prices are standard for quality French pastries!

Bethany S.

Yelp
Found this cute place right near our hotel, and we loved it! My friends and I got Eggs Benedict, Provencal, and a parfait, as well as the chai tea latte (to die for) and a lavender oat milk latte. The staff are friendly and I love the environmental-initiatives at the restaurant as well. We will definitely be back!
google avatar

James R.

Yelp
Has this place been bought by private equity or something? It has a great reputation but the 2-3 occasions I've been in the past year, everything's been mediocre. The pastries don't taste great, nor do they have any of the textural indicators that they were made with a special amount of care or skill. The espresso-based drinks are especially rough.
google avatar

Cyrene R.

Yelp
Visited LA and decided to grab a quick breakfast. Had their avacado toast. Thought was delicious and had their iced matcha. Thought their matcha was okay, not the best. The service was very nice. The ambiance was very relaxed and chill.

Daniel M.

Yelp
I love the food and pastries here it is truly amazing French cuisine! The workers are the most courteous and it's also luckily so convenient because it's a 2 minute walk away from where me and my partner live! If you're looking for great French cuisine. Also, Elodie, is the ABSOLUTE best and most accommodating! She has a big personality and is super sweet and attentive and it makes coming here such a wonderful experience!
google avatar

Andrea B.

Yelp
Extremely yummy iced coffee. The Nutella croissant was also really nice. Sweet and flakey. Good ambiance with free iced cold water. Perfect for this summer heat.
google avatar

Brian H.

Yelp
Delicious French pastries and hot beverages right in the heart of downtown Los Angeles. This is a wonderful French cafe and is popular among locals and has an excellent vibe about it. The service was friendly and the prices while a little high are well worth it for the experience. 5 stars and two thumbs up!
google avatar

Kevin L.

Yelp
Delightful but pricey. Stopped for a Matcha latte with almond milk and a peach danish. Both were delicious. Came out to $16.22 which, for me, is a splurge. Indoor and outdoor seating are both nice.
google avatar

Andrew A.

Yelp
Every time I stay in this area, I have to eat at Pitchoun at least once if not more! I always enjoy their croque madame and always feel filled with good food and drink on every visit. The service here is always top notch and I enjoy the energy and ambiance as well!
google avatar

Veronica J.

Yelp
This place is very cute, The service was good, we just came for coffee and it was great. A lot of the bakery items were out but they serve sandwiches and other food as well.
google avatar

Lupita M.

Yelp
It's a must in DTLA! Their breakfast sandwich is so good and you can never go wrong with desserts! One of my fav fruits tarts that I've ever had. Their lattes are also very good. The service is always nice, they're friendly and fast. They're pet friendly on their patio which I love, but in the inside is cozy as well.
