U Medvídků - Review - Old Town - Prague - The Infatuation

"Until about 2005 or so, there were old-school pubs like U Medvídků (translation:“At the Little Bear”)liberally sprinkled throughout the historical center. These days, those pubs have been renovated into soulless tourist traps. But, like the Dude, the Little Bear abides. What lures people out of hibernation and into this almost-600-year-old pub with roving mustached waiters is the opportunity to down a couple of pints of Budweiser, the original Czech Bud that hails from the southern Bohemian town of Česky Budějovice, or Budweis in German. Except for meat-hungry German tourists, most people don’t come here for the food, despite the long compendium of meat-centric Central European staples. But when you need to fill the stomach to prolong a night of beer drinking, you can’t go wrong with many of the grizzly-sized dishes, like the goulash with dumplings or bacon-spiked chicken liver pate." - David Farley

Google
We came across this tavern style establishment whilst looking for somewhere to have a traditional Czech meal at reasonable price. The menu provided a range of traditional Czech food and drinks to choose from at a reasonable price. The food was very good and be aware that it comes in large portions. The beers, particularly the Dark was excellent and complimented the food. It does get busy and a bit loud (due to the old style buildings), so if you want to ensure a seat as there are no reservations we suggest arrive by 6:45pm.

Google
Possibly the rudest waitress in the main restaurant that I have ever come across and initial service that felt like something from a spoof tv show. Not even a hello god forbid a smile and instead got told to ‘use your eyes LADY’ when asking a very simple polite question. As a waitress myself, I would have got a disciplinary for this behaviour. Got seated in the separate bar area and the service was thankfully redeemed by a lovely man who was quick, friendly and didn’t scowl and shout at us like the previous interaction. The food was good and the drinks were nice. Overall it was a pleasant experience after all but the reviews about service are definitely not lying.

Google
We had a great time here! The place is lovely, and we really enjoyed the delicious local food and the excellent homemade beer. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We’ll definitely come back again and highly recommend trying the beer! 🍻

Google
Read bad reviews about the place, but honestly, our experience was awesome. We got our table, beers, and fries. Everything was great and fast. I would definitely recommend for a quick stop during a bar crawl. Probably would not stay for dinner.

Google
Good place for traditional Czech food and some good beer. Food comes in large portions and is of a reasonable price. The beers is fantastic and highly recommended. The place does get busy and a bit loud (due to the old style buildings) so if you want to ensure a seat and a bit more quietness I suggest you arrive a bit before peak times (i.e. arrive before 6pm).

Google
My partner and I stayed here for five days and loved it. The staff were friendly, the room was clean and very comfortable, and the hotel is in a great location for exploring the old town, new town, and the river. The beer is very good and having a tap in the hotel room was such a lovely touch and a great way to relax after a day of walking around Prague. We would happily recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Prague and hope to stay here again soon.

Google
Went to this brewery - it offers a really good variety of traditional Czech food and beer. The place itself has a history and it was interesting to read about it as well. Great addition is ability to buy perfume, soap and shampoos with beer from their brewery - definitely a great gift to bring home from Prague! ❤️ The food is good, the place can be a bit too loud and crowded though, especially in busy hours. Deep fried small fish - is 100% my favourite beer snack! 🍻👍🏻

Google
Typical old old brewery since 14th century. Many prevails open rooms are closed recently. 🫶🏼 I love their beer and prices quite fine for such location. Can be busy and loud but this is the specific of that place. Service is quite typical ☺️ so I like to come back🍻

Yelp
This was amazing food was awesome as well as service! This lived up to the hype. Would definitely go back for more

Yelp
I ordered one small beef broth soup, the broth was clear and tasty. No MSG flavoring that I can tell. The other meal was the duck confit. The meat is a bit dry but maybe that is how it is suppose to be. Flavor is good and the sauce are very delicious. I also ordered a glass of the house beer. It is a good beer. Service was quick and the restroom is clean. A bit quiet for a Saturday lunch but I like it. 660 krona total. About 31.50 USD. A bit much for the quality that is just so so.

Yelp
This traditional old Czech pub and brewery was a convenient spot for a late dinner after watching a show at the nearby Blacklight theater. The crowd seemed to lean slightly more tourist than locals, but I could be wrong. Service was friendly overall, and the ambience is crowded, loud, and well, its a pub! 125K/$5.25 Whipped Beer cheese with fried bread...I saw this on a Anthony Bourdain episode, and it did not disappoint! the creamy cheese was like spiced feta cheese, the toasted breads were a perfect vessel to transport the tasty cheese into my mouth. 260K/$11 Roast Beef in Rosehips sauce, with potato croquettes...this sounded amazing on paper! But it was just okay, as an American I like my beef medium and tender. This beef was more well done and dry, but the creamy rose sauce was wonderful and did a pretty good job of masking the beef averageness. The potato croquettes crispy and airy, unique! 260K/$11 4 Beer sampler. This seemed like a good idea at first, but for Czech prices this was actually bit pricy. The beers seemed to be about a 200ml pour each. Being from San Diego, California where we have the best beer in the world, I found each of the four beers just kind average. It's much cheaper just to buy individual beers. Good place, not a great place. Come by if its convenient at the moment, like it was for me.

Yelp
Food was amazing... will return when we are in Prague again. Atmosphere was quaint and made for a nice experience.

Yelp
The atmosphere is one of an authentic Czech tavern, the menu as well, the quality however is tourist grade. We ordered a roast beef with potato croquettes; the seasoning was good, but the meat was dry, and the croquettes definitely not potato. The second dish was potato dumplings stuffed with smoked meat and sauerkraut, same story; good seasoning, poor quality ingredients. The experience and the beer were nice, food was terrible.

Yelp
We went here with a group and the service was amazing! Even with all of us they were patient and tried to help the best way they could. The area was super cute and we were seated in a back room. The food was so amazing, I had a roast beef that was so savory with bread dumplings
google avatar

Mark F.

Yelp
Stopped in for a Budvar and dinner. I ordered the larded roast beef with cranberries and dumplings. While the taste of the meat was good, I expected it to be much more tender, it was much tougher than I expected and much chewier. The description made me believe I would have something very tender.

Yelp
This place was recommended to us by the front desk. If you want local Czech food, I'd highly recommend it. They were very friendly upon entering and helped us order food for our starving children. I had one of their crafted beers and it was excellent. The sausage platter was very good with mustard and beer. The ribeye was perfectly cooked and the mushroom sauce added another flavor of umami to it. The pumpkin salad, although very different for me, was excellent! Overall great place and food. For me, this was a heavy meal so be prepared. Enjoy!

Yelp
We chanced upon this place and was attracted by the small plates on the menu. While waiting for a table we read a 3 star review for this place and we were hesitant. But all our fears quickly disappeared. Service and food was excellent. I am glad we stayed and sampled #1and #16. It was outstanding!

Yelp
Traditional food, great beer, reasonable prices, highly recommended!! We stayed at the hotel and loved that this was down stairs. Do it!!!

Yelp
In touristy old town, this is a popular place that is worth a visit. We found our way here by recommendation of the chef who taught our Czech cooking class the day before. Skip the restaurant section and head upstairs to the brewery part, much smaller (only a row of tables), it has the same food menu as downstairs and their on brews on tap. Draft beers: They have light, dark, a seasonal white and the X-33 "strongest beer in the world". No really a beer drinker, I really enjoyed the light, a lovely smooth mellow flavor that goes down very easily. The X-33 I was told by our British table neighbors (who were super cool to give me a sip) was too sweet and not really how people liked their beers. I really like it myself though. Food: Portions are generous and prices are still very reasonable for Old town. A ginormous pork knees was 355 czk. We got that plus roasted pork tails (bit too dry). Also got sides of potato pancakes (felt more doughy then potato) red Cabbage and roasted vegetables. The sides were great, while way too much good. I pulled the meat off the pork knee and ended up with a whole place still to take home after becoming entirely stuffed. Do come give them a try when you're here. Service was good upstairs, while downstairs when we left it seemed packed and the staff getting short on patience with over 200 people in the place. Also they only serve their own draft beer upstairs, in the cool house glasses (we took one home for a souvenir for 120czk), so definitely head up back!

Yelp
3.5 ish. We only came for drinks... it was pretty good. We got seated right away and our server was attentive. Got the traditional beer... Pilsner Urquell. No different anywhere else. Decor was cool. It was pretty busy.

Yelp
Just because Anthony Bourdain has been here, doesn't mean you should go too. Ok, maybe you should. Not only do they have the largest beer hall in Prague, but they serve Budweiser too. Hold on. Hold on. Budweiser in America? tastes like piss. Budweiser in the Czech Republic? Doesn't taste like piss. If you're still not convinced to drink Bud in Prague (I agree, you shouldn't! there are waaay too many other beers worth your .. beer belly) they also carry the popular Oldgott and beer X33, mainly famous for its alcohol concentration level at 12.6%. Food is uninspiring, but decent. The Cigaro sausage appetizer with mustard and horseradish was delicious. The pork schitzel was average, as was my half roasted duck with meat and potato dumplings. Portions at other traditional Czech restos we've been to were bigger and better value for your money. Nevertheless, ANYWHERE you go in Prague, even if overpriced, is still cheaper than what you would spend say ... outside of Prague. Also, make sure you double check the bill, it's literally written on a piece of paper and the server does the math in his head. I took a picture of the menu beforehand so we knew the prices he wrote down were correct.

Yelp
Without question, this place is a must go in Prague. First of all, yes, they serve and brew Budweiser, but not the kind you would imagine. This a Czech Budweiser and is very very tasty. The ambiance is really cool. Tavern feel, fun times and always tons of people. It's popular among locals and tourists, so you may have to wait. It's fairly close to the main square, so should be am easy walk. Anyways, I won't get lengthy here, just step in for a beer and a dinner, you won't regret it.

Yelp
Typical Czech food, a step better and more interesting than the average place. We had deer and pheasant dishes, both prepared in delicious, distinctive sauces. The environment is certainly authentic. Knowing this was a historic and still-active brewery, I was a bit surprised that what they serve is overwhelmingly Budvar. I mean, it's delicious, and they serve it from the tank, but I was assuming they would have more focus on their own beer...

Yelp
I'd give this restaurant a 4 for food a 2 for service and a 2.5 for beer. I found this place during one of my many research crawls back when we were planning this trip. I sent the menu to my husband, who instantly started oooh-ing and ahhh-ing over the food items. When he saw that they also had a brewery onsite, it sealed the deal: this was one of the places we knew we *had* to go to. We showed up around lunch time on day during the middle of the week. It was pretty busy (Czechs do love their lunchtime meals and all those mugs of beer), but we were able to find a small table towards the back. A waiter came by not long after with menus and to ask for our drink orders. As we hadn't had a chance to view the things they had on tap, we didn't know what we wanted, so we asked for a minute. He didn't even acknowledge us - he just walked away. We finally made a decision on food: Roast boar on garlic with dumplings and spinach for me, and the Schnitzel for him. Decisions made, we closed our menus and sat back to wait for our waiter to come back. And we waited. And waited. And waited a ton more. There were several members of the wait staff walking back and forth in front of the table, but none stopped. They went to other tables to serve them, but continually ignored us. We were two minutes from getting up and walking out when one of them finally decided to stop to take our order. She wasn't friendly at all. We tried to ignore it, but it was just so obvious. And this wasn't just "Czechs just seem colder than most people", this was flat-out rudeness. We asked for a specific beer, and she told us they didn't have it. So we asked for the next beer, and she said no. She then fed us a line about there only being two beers, one on tap, the other in a bottle. My husband relented and asked for two of the beers on draft, and she left. When the food was delivered, I was surprised by the amount of food. I had thought that it'd be just heaps and heaps of food, but the serving size was actually quite...normal. My dish had some good flavor, though it was a more than a little salty. My husband loved his schnitzel, saying that it was better than he had hoped. The beer was kind of disappointing - pilsner that I'm pretty sure was Budweiser-like. The service never got better. It took way too long to get our bill, and by the time someone stopped by (completely different waiter at this point), all I wanted was to get out of there. Overall, I wasn't impressed, and I had no strong desire to return.

Yelp
U Medvidku is an inn, restaurant, and beer hall located between the old and new cities of Prague. We came here for dinner on the recommendation of one of my Czech colleagues, and this was undoubtedly the best meal I had in Prague. We started our meal with two glasses of beer (it's true--beer is literally cheaper than water in Prague) along with an order of Prague ham, served with mustard, horseradish, and pickled. The ham was delicious--it was slightly chilled, lean, and flavorful--definitely not too salty, which was a great surprise. And then came the main courses. We found a number of fairly unusual meats on the menu and knew we had to try them. So we started off with an order of deer leg, which was drowned in gravy and served with potato croquettes on the side. While the deer itself was tender and delicious (though the flavors perhaps a little bit muddled), I actually really enjoyed the potato croquettes, which were not fried, and I found the texture absolutely fascinating--soft and chewy and the same time! The other dish we ordered, which I absolutely loved, was the pheasant leg. The dish came with three pieces on the bone along with Carlsbad dumplings (a type of seasoned bread dumping) on the side. While I didn't find the dumplings that memorable, the pheasant was out of this world. They had a unique flavor that was distinctly "poultry," yet unlike any other poultry I had ever tasted. I also felt very medieval picking up the entirely pheasant leg and gnawing the tender, savory meat right off the bone! Overall, this was a fantastic restaurant right in the heart of Prague and with very friendly service as well!

Yelp
Skip this place if you're looking for food. I think Anthony bourdain came here for one of his shows and it became super popular. Honestly, their own craft brew beer was pretty good but the food is below expectations. I got the gulas and a friend got the svickova and both dishes came out lukewarm. The meats themselves needed some more salt and the meats were pretty tough to chew too.

Yelp
We were starving when we arrived and the first place we saw was this; albeit delicious meaty smells were wafting through the front door, drawing us to this place! Upon entering, we realized that there were sections for smoking and non-smoking (something quite common in Prague, we realized later); the section where we entered was the smoking one. A group of old man was sitting by the window, drinking beer, chatting in garish, chirpy voices and smoking - ah, no wonder this is a Pub! We have heard that meat is good and widely available in Prague and being the hungry people that we are, we ordered a large slab of Pork Neck meat. I don't fancy pork all that much but I was willing to give it a go; my other two travel companions are pork-lovers! For me, I ordered a hearty beef soup and a salad to share. Verdict: * Pork Neck - super large portion, best if shared among 3 people!. Delicious, smokey and very meaty. It comes as is, with a knife stuck in it, and it is quite a feat to cut the meat, strength is needed! * Beef soup - taste like Campbell's ABC soup, nothing fancy about it but if you're in need of something hot on a cold day, this hits the spot. * Ceasar Salad - the good old salad does its job, but it is quite a large portion though. p.s. The portions are huge so if you are small-eaters, it is better to share a portion so that you can try more food instead of hogging one main dish for yourself! :)

Yelp
This is a popular beer hall in Prague. Beer here is like 49 crowns which is about $1.50 US. For food I would recommend the pork knuckle. For about 500 crowns you get a piece that is about 1kg. I would also recommend the goulash. Overall food here is reasonably priced but the beers end up being only half full because the beer is foamy and you get half head. Looks like most locals only come for drinks, while the tourists order food. They do accept credit cards which is a plus.
google avatar

Jocelyn C.

Yelp
GREAT decor - has an old city vibe. Majority of wait staff is friendly enough. I ordered the pork schnitzel and potato salad which was good - friend had the goulash which she enjoyed. We started with toast and beer cheese - and ended with beer ice cream and chocolate cake - all pretty good. Giving a 4 star as it's good - but not mind-blowing :)

Yelp
We stayed here at the hotel, and despite trekking around the city for places to eat, we keep coming back here. Its so ridiculously good and at an amazing price. I tried something new every time and never was disappointed. Our bartender/waiter started to recognize us by the last couple of days we were here and gave excellent suggestions. The x33 is such a smooth, creamy, devil drink. Its so incredibly good i was considering the ridiculous cost of shipping some back home or emptying out my luggage to bring it with me. If they sold that in a mini keg i definitely wouldve done it lol Theres obviously going to be a wait around the busy meal times. I think our first night there we had to wait maybe 10 minutes to get a table, but the place is pretty big so they can churn out groups of people relatively quickly. Use your head. If its a "rush hour" call ahead, especially if you have a group of people.

Yelp
By far the best food I've had in all of Europe. We got both two famous and favorite dishes that the waiter and locals suggested and just WOW. I am so happy we came her and had a chance to understand Chec's culture. Truly amazing food.

Yelp
OMG. I can now die happy. (and I probably WILL die from all the pork I ate - but if I am going to die, this is the way to do it!) This is a classic traditional cuisine Czech place right in the heart of Prague. Contemporary Prague residents a) want to eat light for the same reasons we want to eat light and b) associate the old stuff with communism, conservative grandmothers, and a past that is holding them back. So they are globalizing like crazy and dropping the old massive fat packed meat packed traditional recipes as fast as they can. The only people who eat that stuff now are tourists - so tourists are literally maintaining classical Czech cuisine. This leads to 90% of the traditional houses being tourist rip-offs for foreign stooges who don't know better. However, the remaining 10% still maintain sky high integrity and preserve the classics in their highest form - even if this means serving primarily to foreigners. U Medvidku is in that high integrity 10% and is a place that should be treasured just as the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra should be treasured. The place is massive, with at least five large rooms that we could see - and all of them were near full when we arrived. They brew their own beer. I had a "white" beer which was an eminently delightful lager. The opening course was a bowl of beef broth with home made noodles. There was not a drop of fat or grease in the beef broth. The noodles were tiny filament noodles like you almost never see any more. The soup was spiced with fresh parsley leaves - which made for a light refreshing treat. Just as well that the first course was light and refreshing - because the next course was the heartiest most filling dish I have ever eaten in my life. And one that I will remember for the rest of my life. It was a roasted pig knee with horseradish, mustard and hot peppers on the side. Forget pork belly. If you want pure pork bliss, pig knee is the way to go. Pig knees are huge - about the size of a whole roast beef. They are completely covered with magnificent crispy pork skin on the outside. (oh my god!) They have a layer of yummy fat under that (oh my god!) And under that is a vast quantity of superb pork dark meat (oh my god!) Three completely over-the-top pork flavors, to have separately or combined. And you can have them naked, with fresh horseradish or with strong mustard. 3 meats plus 3 flavor options means nine different tastes that keep rotating as you go through the dish. So even though the platter is massive - you never tire of the dish because each bite is different. (And the skin tastes different all over the knee due to differential exposure to the broiler flame at the end.) 300,000 variations of pig, pig, beautiful pig! *** Most of the other traditional dishes are comparably over the top. The dish I almost got was a larded roast beef in a sour cream sauce with cranberries. Vegetarians coming to U Medviku however need not despair. My healthy-eating love of the life had a traditional Czech barley casserole with a side of grilled vegetables. The barley itself had pickles and onions cooked into the dish to flavor it. Enthusiastic applause from the vegetarian. *** I have a long list of restaurants in which I want to eat in Prague. But this was such a peak experience, I may have to somehow cram in a return visit. This is legendary food you will remember for the rest of your life. Just be sure not to eat for four days before you come here.

Yelp
Came here on a recommendation and being first night in Prague figured eh why not! The beer here was whatever but the food was really good and heavy. The decor insider was perfect bar inn like, the service good (loved how the host didn't care if you didn't feel like waiting or not. Which worked because many waiters left so my friend and I got to the front of the queue quickly), and the food was great. Only advice is to make a reservation in advance or be prepared to wait, the place is big but the locals do like to go there as well so maybe it will take a while.

Yelp
Friendly people here esp the guys behind the bar. They were a fun loving group. The ambience of this place esp upstairs adds to the experience. They call themselves rustic but rustic doesn't usually include gleaming copper brewing vats etc. they teased me bc I initially didn't order a beer at a brewery! (A girl has to rehydrate sometime you know!) as far as food goes I ordered the svickova which is a traditional Czech dish consisting of slices of meat and what looked like slices of white bread covered in a rich gravy. Wasn't to my liking but my daughters boyfriend loved it being a meat lover. My husband definitely enjoyed the duck breast he ordered. my daughter ordered the pate which was too oniony for me. We went upstairs after eating to check it out and sat down for a beer there. You can see a lot of the beer making equipment up there too. Breweries in this part of world do tend to brew only 1 or 2 types of beer. Usually a light and a dark beer. I tended to like the dark beers more.

Yelp
Cannot believe how many people were tricked into coming here because of the 4 star ratings! As Richard mentions this place is full of tourists, and don't be fooled- it isn't that great of a place to go in the first place. I ordered the chicken leg and 'creamy' potatoes. The chicken was mostly fat, and pretty gross. The potatoes were cut up in slivers and with some white cream on top. They were weird tasting to say the least. I was not super happy with my meal, neither was my friend. No one brings your food in a normal fashion here , my friend was done eating her meat and dumplings before I even received my crappy chicken and potatoes. I got the budvar to drink, it was normal, average, nothing special. Servers rush around even when it isn't busy and before the end of your meal you will have at least 4 servers come up to you one after another asking if you want to order. Quite the opposite of good service. Then when you want to pay none can be found. Overall this is a must skip in Prague. Too bad of an experience to go back here or recommend it.

Yelp
Our hosts had been here before and they wanted to introduce us to Praha the right way. We were to have the true Budweiser (Budvar), have Czech goulash and do it here! We started with a beer in the bar and each had a different version. I tried the X33 and decided that Czech beer is pretty good! Definitely go into the bar to check out the huge copper beer making kettle/still/tank. It is beautiful. Then we went to dinner and had wonderful goulash, a fun circular sausage dipped in yummy mustard and more beer... This was the perfect introduction to walking, eating and drinking ourselves through Europe. I would recommend it highly. PS. I was told before we got here (Czech, Spain, etc) that you need to know what you want when the waiter or bartender shows up, otherwise, you are put to the bottom of the list. It is a cultural thing. Just be ready or be sorry. I saw a couple reviews who commented on this and it is best just to know this. Not rude, just the rules. You can ask questions, but don't just don't tell them to go away...

Yelp
I was recommended this place from my Czech friend .Well, If a local recommends something, you gotta try it! This place doesn't look that big until you walk in. It has 5+ rooms! very authentic looking and a great staff. Right when we walked in the staff helped us with seating and asked if we'd like something to drink. We ordered a round of the dark Budvar, It was very malty and tasty. I got the creamy chicken with side of potatoes and my friend got the traditional Goulash. My chicken was very well cooked, and the creamy sauce went exceptionally great.. I also had a little taste of my friend's Goulash, probably the best Goulash I've had so far. It was very well prepared with a great taste of ingredients. 2 beers, 2 dishes and a great service all for just 422Cz ($22) I'm so glad I came across this place. The best Czech food I've ever had so far! A little tip- This place can get very busy. Always try to make a reservation.

Yelp
Okay, so I consider myself a legitimately widely travelled and well-eaten foodie, but I have to say this has been one of my most enjoyable culinary experiences anywhere in the world. My wife took one bite of the duck with orange sauce and immediately commented, "Okay, we're ordering another...!" After travelling through Germany and Austria, my son concluded that theirs was the best Apfelstrudel mit Schlag. One word summarizes our experience here: "Wow." The food is utterly fantastic and exceeded all expectations. You cannot go wrong with the culinary staples of wild boar, duck, potato pancakes, dumplings, and "U Medvidku sauté" (of beef sirloin, pork leg, mushrooms, greens, and ham). An eye-opening culinary experience that cost close to nothing!

Yelp
Ok, you've seen Prague's famous Astronomical Clock, toured the Old Town square, and maybe even fought your way across the tourist packed Charles Bridge, so now it is time for what you really crave: meat and beer. Oh, and no one does it better than the Czechs, and I can think of no place that does it better than U Medvidku. This place is iconic for a reason, and it's not just because Anthony Bourdain thought it was cool. No, it is because the recipes for the food and beer haven't changed in centuries. U Medvidku serves an authentic plate of traditional Czech fare, which mainly consist of hearty meat dishes I selected the Farmer's Pork Neck with white bread dumplings and was immediately reminded of my grandmother's cooking, which is not surprising since my family roots can be traced to the region. It is nice to know that grandma was doing it right, for U Medvidku is the gold standard in all things Czech yummy. Of course, my meal was accompanied by tankards of delicious Czech beer, which in itself is worth the stop. However, I will say that the service is old school European which means slow by American standards, so you may wish to order your next round before your drain your glass. Also, U Medvidku claims to brew the strongest beer in the world. A word of warning the X33 is no joke, so one glass should be more than enough for the must skilled beer aficionado. I have to confess that I wasn't really all that pleased with the taste as the alcohol level kind of overpowers the taste for me. After you're done dining at U Medvidku, I highly recommend that you take a tour of its brewery and gift shop. It is beautiful and informative. Again, this place is a must stop for anyone visiting Prague, for it serves as the perfect window into some of the Czechs' greatest contributions to society: meat and beer.

Yelp
A pub built in a former brewery, with an enclosed beer garden, beer hall, a brewery museum, shop and micro-brewery, this is more than just a place for a drink. You can do that too, of course: it's famous for serving Budvar beer (even during the Commumist period when most of it was exported), but more interesting - and recommended - is their own brew, served occasionally from the tap but more usually from the bottle, called 'Oldgott': at 13% this polotmavé ('light-dark', or amber lager) is both very strong and beautifully flavoured. The two 'Little Bears' of its name are carved into the stone above the main entrance, and it has been operating as an inn since 1466. You'll find a bar (16-03h) and a restaurant (11.30-23h) on the ground floor, both serving hearty Czech fare, and a smaller and more intimate brewery bar next to some of the brewing kettles upstairs. (Note: it's only been operating as a micro-brewery in the current form since 2005). It's worth a look around the building for some original Gothic king-post roofs and Renaissance-style painted ceilings. The museum is only mildly diverting, but is worth a look if you are here, and the shop sells beer-related items, which make for perfect souvenirs and gifts for folks back home. There's also a small hotel attached to the pub, with some historic rooms, but we didn't stay there - we didn't know about it before we went! The place is usually busy with both locals and tourists, and is centrally located. Be warned that in the evenings they sometimes have an Oompah band, so if that's not your thing, try and go at lunchtime or in the afternoon.

Yelp
I echo Ivan Z. Pic attached, it's Czech Thanksgiving! Ordered "Granny" under Czech Classics. At first I thought the meat portion was undersized but the accompanying dumpling slices fill you up quick. Obv mop up the delicious gravy and enjoy. Beer is legit too. Prefer the light, maybe just because it's summer. Dark is great and probably the preference in colder months. Also had no idea Anthony Bourdain came here on his Prague episode. I can see why! Great stop in Old Town.

Yelp
Very nice place to sit and eat. Good service and a lot to choose from the menu. We eat boar pork and beef stake. It was very good. For dessert we eat beer icecream. It was intersting. Bitter and sweet. 678 crons (113 ils) for that and small beer and soda. You should go back to try different foods. Very good place.

Yelp
Restaurace u Medvidku is an approximately 10-minute walk from Old Town Square and being off the main tourist drag, you will find more authentic pub atmosphere here, good food, and friendlier prices. The place can get busy at times and slightly chaotic. We had three different waiters trying to take our order but everything else apart from this little miscommunication was fine, and we really enjoyed our meal and drinks here.

Yelp
Very popular local pub that server typical Czech food and supposedly good beer. I have never had beer in here but when it comes to the meals, these are authentic, tasteful and the portions are decent. It is a good place to go have beer with friends but not a place to have coffee or relaxed chat. It is definitely preferred among the males :)

Yelp
This was recommended to me by our Uber driver who picked us up from the airport. This is very much like a German-style tavern serving traditional Czech food with a simple list of beers that are brewed in house. Highly recommend the light beer, the sausage, and the goulash soup. A typical bar with quick service, centrally located, and refreshing pivo (beer in Czech) make this an ideal pit stop.

Yelp
They do NOT have IPAs. I repeat. They DO NOT HAVE IPAs. Lagers only when I stopped in. Sadly sadly disappointed . Good luck.

Yelp
I found U Medvídků excellent, probably one of the best places I ate in Prague. The food was fantastic, as was the beer. Try the Budweiser. It is not anything like American budweiser, they just have the same name. That's a pretty interesting story if you feel like looking into it. Also try the X33. It's amazing. Some reviewers say it's touristy, but it's centrally located and attached to a hotel, so that is to be expected. Some people call it a ripoff. I don't get that. We got an appetizer, two entrees, and five half liters of beer for 635 Czech crowns. That's a little over 24 USD. I call that a deal. I was actually shocked when I saw how cheap it was. Several reviews mention the waitstaff being rude, or inattentive. I found them excellent. We ate here on two different days, and ended up at the same table with the same waiter. He remembered us and that we had chosen the same table last time. Waiters in Europe are not waiters in America. Don't come to Prague, or any other city, and hold the people to American standards. You are a guest in their country, so act like it. They aren't going to wait on you hand and foot, or come by every two minutes. That is not how they operate. They don't need to acclimate, you do. Be sure to tip in Prague. You can google what is customary.

Yelp
It's a bit of a tourist trap, but this is how anyone visiting Prague would envision an old beer hall. People were smoking their faces off, and the food was unremarkable. I had beef tongue with fluffy white "dumplings" like slices of cake swimming in brown gravy with a dollop of sour cream and berry sauce. By all means, visit for the beer. For Czech food, try also Kotleta, U Parlamentu and Havelská Koruna.

Yelp
I am a very open and accepting person , but this review, my FIRST EVER YELP REVIEW, has to be read ! Like most poor reviews, I would give a 0 star if allowed. But since that is not possible, I am giving 1 star. The food was good as most people have reviewed, but the service was HORRIBLE by a particular server by the name of Pe***. When She came to take our drink orders, we asked for two glasses of their local beers , but she RUDELY said, "you are a party of three but how come only order two drinks? " while the third person - my child- was still looking at the drink menu. She made it sound like that if we don't order the third drink, we would be in trouble. The menus, drinks, and three entrees were practically thrown at our table. Again the food was good, but the service was totally unacceptable!!! Two previous nights we have tried Czech Restaurants, Restaurace Bredovsky Dvur and Restaurace U Pravdu , which were both great in food and services!

Yelp
This is a typical Czech restaurant with great beer selection. We ordered goulash, beef in sour cream sauce and some other dishes- per recommendation of our tour guide. The meal was ok, quite heavy since locals eat everything with potatoes and varieties of bread. Good experience of local cuisine

Yelp
Great Bears, lovely food. there's a hidden courtyard behind this place where you can have your beers in the sun. Take it easy though, they'll kick in twice as fast. Instead of a big plate we had several starters, to be able to try several things. I would really REALLY recommend the drunken plums; dried plums soaked in plum liquor and wrapped in bacon, served hot in a little pan... Delish! You can also visit the brewery and there's a gift shop where you can buy some of the beers (and other souvenirs)

Yelp
I visited here twice in my short stay in Prague. I have to say, my first visit was better than my second. Perhaps this is because the first time, I was with a Czech friend, and we mainly drank beer. The beer is very good. I recall sampling all the varieties and enjoying them all. Definitely worth the visit just for that. However, I came back a couple days later and decided to get a bite to eat. I was alone and only speaking English, so maybe this would explain why the waitstaff was so rude. In any case, the food wasn't anything memorable, and it was a bit pricey. My advice would be to definitely visit, but don't bother with the restaurant. Focus on the great beer.

Yelp
U Medvidku was recommended to us both by our tour guide for the day and by friends who lived in Germany for several years. Each said it was a place the locals ate at, had great service, and the food was great! When we visited, we validated all the comments. We had goulash (which was the leanest we had in our visit to Prague) and I had one of the best beers here I have had while in the city. Called X33, it is brewed right there. It is strong but has a slight salty taste with a sweeter camel taste...making it delicious! The have a variety of places to sit and have a larger beer hall in the back. Read through some of the other reviews here on yelp. We had a great experience and would recommend it.

Yelp
I think it's probably the best restaurant in Prague! Really enjoyed the food. I'd recommend everyone who goes to Prague.

Yelp
Dishonest?? Went here on our last day in Prague for lunch and ordered budvar, pork neck, and dumplings. We came here because of the many reviews and it was close-ish to the train station to catch the AE. The meat and sauerkraut were very good and tasty the dumplings were quite filling as well! Although the food and service was good and when it came time for the bill the waiter added 40kc to our bill and when asked he said it was taxes and services. But when we asked again saying the taxes are generally included in the price (which they are) he said no it's taxes and service. I has to ask the manager to come over and explain the charge and when the waiter was asked again he said we ordered "extra" cabbage and could not provide the original receipt (hand written) since it was already in the trash. It was very sketchy and we were going to leave the same amount of tip either way but after this no tip was left and that's why the low rating.... The manager was quite nice and helpful and removed the extra 40kc. Sketch??

Yelp
Stopped by here to drink some beer, and I wasn't disappointed. They had Budweiser Budvar beers on tap, which were a lot better than the piss water Budweiser we have in the states, but some of they're really exceptional beers were some of the ones they had in the bottle. I definitely enjoyed the beer, but didn't get around to eating here. Next time I'm back in Prague I'll come back here and try the food, then I can give a more accurate review on this place.

Yelp
Some say this place is touristy, but they stash all of the tourist in the back in the no smoking section. In the front there are a lot of Czech regulars, guys who have been around since the Soviet occupation. I don't know if they had Budvar back then, but now this Pivovar only makes one type of beer. I had of course the grilled pork tails, pure beer food. You can't go wrong with any of the pork czech dishes on this menu. If you don't plan on eating czech food and drinking beer, then don't go here. Go to Mckáč na Václavské náměstí, Sorry, I digress. The pork tails were actually the meat from the back of the pig. The same with pork knuckle, it is actually the knee. The tails were very meaty, and they weren't grilled, but roasted. The tail was delicious but hard to eat, so I ended up having 4 full pours of beer at $1.25 each. Not just any beer, but Budvar and the beer they brew in the pivovar. I just want to reiterate to stick to the Czech classics and the beer, and If you can't break out of your shell and embrace a different culture, then there is a "Kah Ehf Saw" on Na Příkopě.
